Kiran Rao’s piquant Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official submission to Oscars 2025. The announcement was made by the jury of the Film Federation of India (FFI), the apex body that annually selects the Indian official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, on Monday, September 23.
Released in theatres in March, Laapataa Ladies is Rao’s sophomore directorial after the acclaimed Dhobi Ghat (2011). The satirical comedy-drama tells the story of a young man whose bride gets accidentally swapped with someone else’s. The film stars Sparsh Shrivastava along with Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. It is based on Biplab Goswami’s prize-winning screenplay, Two Brides.
In its citation, the FFI jury said, “Indian women are a strange mixture of submission and dominance. Well-defined, powerful characters in one world, Laapataa Ladies (Hindi) captures this diversity perfectly, though in a semi-idyllic world and in a tongue-and-cheek way. It shows you that women can happily desire to be home makers as well as rebel and be entrepreneurially inclined. A story that can simultaneously be seen as one that needs change, and one that can bring about change. Laapataa Ladies (Hindi) is a film that can engage, entertain and make sense not just to women in India but universally as well.” The 13-member committee was chaired by Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua.
Produced by Jio Studios, Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Pictures, Laapataa Ladies had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. It released in Indian theatres in March this year and is currently streaming on Netflix.
“I am deeply honored and delighted that our film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards,” Rao said in a statement. “This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India.”
This year, a total of 29 films, including Payal Kapadia’s Cannes-winning All We Imagine as Light and the acclaimed Malayalam drama Aattam, were in the running for Oscars selection
India was last nominated for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards for Lagaan (2001). The 97th Academy Awards are scheduled for 2025 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, US.

Joe Jonas, Sophie Turner divorced after year-long custody battle for daughters
A Florida judge has declared Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner divorced and single, signing off on a confidential agreement reached between the two. The Miami-Dade County judge approved the agreement on Friday, one year after the 35-year-old Jonas Brothers singer filed to divorce the 28-year-old Game of Thrones and X Men actor and five years after the two were married.
The split brought a quiet and relatively quick end to a divorce that briefly became acrimonious and looked headed for a long and ugly custody fight. The documents said that moderated negotiations led to an agreement on splitting assets, spousal support and custody of their two daughters, 4-year-old Willa and 2-year-old Delphine.
Judge Gina Beovides declared that the marriage was “irretrievably broken,” and that the couple’s agreement, especially their parenting plan, was in the best interest of the family. After-hours emails seeking comment from representatives of both Turner and Jonas were not immediately returned.
The couple met through Instagram messages and began dating in 2016. They married in a secretive ceremony at a Las Vegas wedding chapel in May of 2019 after the Billboard Music Awards. Country duo Dan + Shay performed at the wedding.
Jonas filed for divorce in September of 2023. In the filing he sought joint custody and said the two had a pre-nuptial agreement. The following day the two posted an identical amicable statement to each of their Instagram accounts. But the split turned into a serious dispute within weeks when Turner sued to force Jonas to turn over the girls’ passports so they could join her in her native England.
The daughters, who were born in the US but have dual citizenship, were with Joe Jonas in New York, where he was on tour, according to court documents, in which Turner said they had been planning on raising the girls together in England when their marriage fell apart. Turner said she learned of Jonas’ divorce filing through the media, while Jonas said the two had had multiple conversations about it.
The custody fight was dropped in January, a sign that the two were on a path to a settlement. Turner, who is from Northampton, England, played Sansa Stark for eight seasons on HBO’s Game of Thrones and played Jean Grey in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and 2019’s Dark Phoenix. -

Jennifer Garner’s relationship with John Miller in jeopardy due to her attention towards Ben Affleck
Jennifer Garner’s immediate attention towards Ben Affleck amid divorce from Jennifer Lopez has put Garner’s relationship with her boyfriend John Miller in jeopardy. RadarOnline revealed that Miller and Garner’s relationship is on the rocks as the former felt neglected while the latter was busy consoling Affleck. Garner and Miller have been together since 2018 and rumors of engagement were also doing rounds until Affleck and Lopez’s divorce came to light. An insider revealed to the media outlet, “John is at the end of his rope with what he considers Jen’s ‘unfathomable’ support for her ex-hubby while ignoring him in the process.” Garner and Affleck spent almost a week together while they helped their daughter Violet settle into her dorm as she moved to Yale for college.
An insider cited this close relationship as the reason for Lopez’s sudden move to file for divorce on the second anniversary of their nuptials in Georgia. The insider said, “J.Lo was making a point that she was humiliated by Jen and Ben’s ridiculous closeness. Don’t think John didn’t feel the same way. John is still incredulous the woman he was close to marrying pushed him aside to focus on repairing her ex’s love life. How is he supposed to feel?”
Sources added that Miller understands that Affleck and Garner share a past but he also believes that it’s time she starts living in the present. The reports from the media outlet also state that the Batman actor continues to blow up Garner’s phone as he navigates through the divorce and Miller believes Garner should instruct him to delete her number now.
Meanwhile, Garner is also at a point where she wants to focus on her boyfriend and their relationship and let Affleck deal with his problems on his own.
A source revealed, “Garner realizes she may have overplayed her hand by putting John in second place in this dynamic. Now she’s trying to woo him back and salvage the relationship.”
After the divorce from J.Lo, Garner has been there for Affleck like no one else has. RadarOnline previously reported that the two are said to be “secretly back together” after Affleck’s divorce. The insider said to the media outlet, “It started months ago. Just look at how happy they look. They’ve gotten a second chance at love.” -

Rakul Preet Singh on nepotism: ‘Films have been taken away from me’
Rakul Preet Singh has shared her take on nepotism, while admitting that she has lost films because of it. In the latest episode of Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, the actor admitted she too would help out her kids in the future, if needed. Rakul Preet said nepotism was a fact of life, and the sooner people accepted it, the better it is for them.
When asked if she lost out on projects because of nepotism, Rakul said in Hindi, “Of course, and then as a result, you can become bitter. But this is not just part of the film industry, opportunities can be snatched away from you in any other industry, like the medical field… and I think that’s life, the sooner you understand this, the better it is for your progress.”
The actor, without taking any names, added, “Tomorrow, if my kids want help, of course, I will help them out and not force the same struggle as I had to undergo on them. Similarly, if star kids get easy access, it is because their parents have worked hard. So nepotism is not something I think too much about. Yes this is a reality, films have been taken away from me, but I am not a person who will get bitter. Maybe these projects were not meant for me. I move on. I feel bad for a day and then snatch out of it.”
Earlier in July, Rakul Preet was seen in Indian 2, which was headlined by veteran actor Kamal Haasan. Indian 2 is the sequel to the 1996 film Indian, which also starred Kamal as Veerasekaran Senapathy. The sequel marked the reunion of Kamal and director S Shankar.
On working with Shankar, Rakul Preet had told ANI at the time of the film’s release, “It’s a privilege to be working with such a remarkable filmmaker, who is a legend in himself. He’s such an amazing director. The way he looks at characters, his vision, and the nuances he adds with his guidance on the set. I’ve learned so much from him while filming Indian 2. Truly an experience!” Rakul Preet is now working on De De Pyaar De 2. -

Emergency to Aandhi, films that dealt with Indira Gandhi’s life and landed in trouble
Politics and cinema are two such areas in which high-voltage drama is expected. The trend of making films on political agenda is quite old in the industry. The new name added to this is Kangana Ranaut’s movie Emergency. However, due to heavy controversy, this film has been postponed once again. But Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is not the first film which has been postponed due to the noise of politics. Even before this, there were many such films in Hindi cinema, which fell prey to politics and were disliked by politicians or organisations, especially the one made on the former Prime Minister’s life. Let’s have a look at films that revolve around the life history of the former Prime Minister, that didn’t go well with either the audiences or the organisations.
The film Kissa Kursi Ka starring Shabana Azmi, Raj Babbar and Surekha Sikri turned out to be a controversial political drama. The movie was completed in 1974 under the direction of director Amrit Nahata. However, due to the imposition of emergency in 1975, its release was postponed. During the emergency, the then government saw this movie and asked for changes in it. Also, its prints were confiscated. Somehow, Kissa Kursi Ka was released in 1978. But there was a lot of discussion about this film as a political satire.
Aandhi
During the emergency period, Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen’s film Aandhi was also ready for release. But director Gulzar’s movie was accused of misrepresenting the relationship between the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her husband. However, when Indira’s government fell in 1977, the way for the release of Aandhi was cleared.
Indu Sarkar
Before Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, director Madhur Bhandarkar’s film Indu Sarkar has shown the story of the Emergency period of 1975 on the big screen. A lot of political mileage was drawn from this movie. The Congress party strongly opposed the film. However, the release date of Indu Sarkar was not postponed and it was released in theatres in 2017.
Emergency
Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency was to be released on the big screen on September 6. But this movie did not get the green signal from the censor board and a petition was filed in the court regarding the Emergency by some members of the Sikh community. It is alleged that the image of the Sikh community has been presented in the wrong way in the film. Currently, the release date of Emergency has been postponed indefinitely.
There are several other Bollywood films like Bellbottom, Sam Bahadur and Raid among others, where several celebrities have played Indira Gandhi on-screen. However, being just in supporting and positive roles, the films didn’t get engrossed in any controversy, especially because of their storyline. Source: IndiaTV News -

Jo bhi inko talented dikhta hain na uske piche pad ke ya toh usko khatam kar dete hain unka career barbaad kar dete hain unko boycott kar dete hain. Itna ganda PR kar kar ke unko badnaam karte hain (Nothing will happen with them. They are jealous of talent. If they see someone talented they go after them to destroy their career. Horrible PR is written on them and they are boycotted from the industry).”
Kangana made her acting debut with Gangster, and went on star in several films like Woh Lamhe, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Double Dhamaal. She had a career breakthrough with Queen, and achieved more box office success with Tanu Weds Manu Returns, and went on to win National Awards for both these films.
