  • Anupam Kher Enlivens Janmashtami Celebrations in Houston

Anupam Kher Enlivens Janmashtami Celebrations in Houston

    Manu Shah

HOUSTON(TIP): Bollywood actor Anupam Kher treated Houstonians to the entire array of his onscreen avatars – serious, comic, patriotic, profound, candid, strong  and yet vulnerable in his address at the  28thJanmashtami celebrations held at George Brown Convention Center on 25 April  Considered one of the finest actors in Bollywood with a soon-to-be-seen debut in Hollywood, the actor who was the Chief Guest of the evening, lived up to every bit of his reputation and spoke for a full hour only broken by applause and appreciative laughter.

The well attended event which brings all the communities of Houston under one roof to celebrate Lord Krishna’s birth, honors outstanding achievements by members of the community and has a lively session of dandiya to round up the evening is organized by the Hindus of Greater Houston.

Kher, who arrived on the dot, took seconds to connect with the gathering. With self- deprecating humor, he explained why he came to the event in a formal suit and tie. The kurta he had ordered was three sizes too big! After taking off his jacket and tie and looking visibly more comfortable, he launched into a one hour “conversation” with the gathering using his brilliant storytelling skills, snippets of poetry, anecdotes and rich wit to deliver his serious message – that “failure is an event, not a person.”

This invaluable lesson was driven home when his parents and grandfather celebrated his academic failures instead of putting him down. Raised in a family that was poor in monetary terms but rich in affection and encouragement, he stated that life’s experiences are the best teachers and his many “encounters with failure” took away the fear of failure.

He advised the parents in the gathering to teach their children to be strong, to have the “hunger” to succeed, and challenge them without overprotecting them from the realities of life. He added that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the same “hunger” to take the country forward which is why he has always espoused the Prime Minister’s cause.

    Participants in costume competition

While dispensing some inspirational advice for the youth he said “Mera gyan meri zindagi keanubhavo se juda hai.(My wisdom comes from life’s experiences). Judging from the audience’s reaction to his speech, the message of learning from our failures and “living life” clearly touched a chord.

When the applause died down, prominent industrialist Jugal Malani draped a shawl around Anupam Kher while Sushma Pallod tied a rakhi to him to mark Raksha Bandhan. In a gesture that was touching, Anupam Kher reciprocated by giving her the traditional offering of money a brother gives his sister.

Sanjay Jajoo served as a lively Emcee while HGH President Partha Krishnaswamy appealed for funds for Kerala flood relief. Sewa International has collected $250,000 from generous Houstonians for relief work.

Two Houstonians were recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award – CEO of Star Pipes Ramesh Bhutada and Beth Kulkarni.  Well-known philanthropist, Ramesh Bhutada who has served the community unstintingly with his time, effort and resources stated that he was humbled to receive the award and reiterated Anupam Kher’s words on encouraging and “recognizing our children for trying.” In her acceptance speech, Beth, who has served many area organizations in leadership and advisory roles, hoped that the award would inspire other Hindus to serve the community in any way they can. The Akhil Chopra Unsung Heroes Award was presented to Richa Dixit, Manish Khatri and Nisha Bhatia.

Other highlights of the celebrations included the children’s costume contest where little children dressed as little Krishnas and Radhas, a cultural dance segment, food, apparel and organization booths. A 25 feet in diameter vibrant Rangoli by Sangita Bhutada with the theme of “makhan chor” welcomed visitors to the center.

First time attendee and IMAGH Secretary Saeed Pathan said that the Janmashtami celebrations and the atmosphere brought back wonderful childhood memories of the festival in India.

Members of the Young Hindus of Greater Houston (YHGH) also contributed substantially to the smooth execution of the event. YHGH President Raj Salhotra stated “The 2018 Janmashtami celebration showcased Houston’s wonderful tradition of diversity. It was wonderful to witness the outpouring of support from Houston’s youth. We are excited to work with youth from across the city to build an organization that represents Hindus from all backgrounds.”

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents an evening of romantic, high-energy music with Shaan – the “Golden Voice of India” and one of Bollywood’s most popular, versatile vocalists on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 8:00 PM.

Shantanu Mukherjee, popularly known as Shaan, is one of the most popular playback singers of the Indian music industry.

Shaan has been one of the most in-demand playback singers in the Bollywood industry, active in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Urdu, Telugu and Kannada films. Among the most popular films that have featured his vocals are 3 Idiots (2009), Om Shanti Om (2007), Saawariya (2007), Fanaa (2006), Dus (2005), Jhankaar Beats (2003) and Kya Dil Ne Kahan (2002).

Singer-songwriter Shaan has lent his voice to many a hit song in Bollywood, Suno Na (from Jhankaar Beats; 2003), Dus (2005), Chand Sifarish (Fanaa; 2006), and Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh (3 Idiots; 2009), to name a few.

He is considered as one of the most popular voices for romantic as well as melodious songs and is one of India’s most versatile singers. He has sung a wide variety of songs in many languages: Konkani, Kannada, Bengali, Punjabi, Nepali, English, Hindi, Oriya, Malayalam, Telugu, Marathi and Assamese.  He has also sung many Pakistani songs.

In addition to his work on television and the big screen, Shaan has released a series of successful solo albums of his own compositions, among them Loveology, Tanha Dil, Aksar and Tishnagi. His song Shuruaat was made into a music video to promote the hit film, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. In recent years, he has also branched out into other musical genres, lending his expert vocals to pop, sad songs, patriotic, jazz, ghazals, hip-hop, rock and many more.

He started his career at a very young age of 17 years in the year 1989. He has been showered with titles such as “Golden Voice of India”, “Voice of Paradise”, “Magician of Melody”, and “Voice of Youth”.

Shaan became popular with the song Musu, and he kept his presence felt with many hit songs in Hindi films. Shaan is not only an outstanding singer but also a talented music composer and lyricist.

Shaan, 45, is embracing reality with a smile. He sang for Bollywood for 20 years. The singer feels that an artist needs to evolve with time to survive in the industry, and he’s proud to have done that. There are no rules in the industry and he feels lucky to have been able to survive so long!

Now, although he does not sing for the Bollywood movie industry, he is not out of work, he says. If there’s no film music, he has other avenues: he does live shows, he travels and he focuses his energies elsewhere. He released his independent single Surilee in 2017.

He is also widely known as a television host, on popular programs like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs, and The Voice: India Star Voice of India and STAR Voice of India 2.

He appeared as a judge in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs 2014–2015 and The Voice India Kids 2016. In 2015 and 2016, Shaan was the winning coach in each of the first two seasons of The Voice. In 2016, in The Voice India Kids, he was the coach of the runner-up contestant.

As a child, Shaan began his career singing jingles for advertisements. After giving it up for a brief period he returned and, along with jingles, began to sing remixes and cover versions. In the 1989 movie Parinda, at age 17, Shaan sang a single line in the song, Kitni Hai Pyari Pyari Dosti Hamari.

Since Shaan belongs to a musical background: his grandfather lyricist Jahar Mukherjee, his late father composer Manas Mukherjee and his sister singer-actor Sagarika, all contributed to his in-depth knowledge of music. With his melodious singing, he has achieved a great place in the Indian music industry. With Shaan songs, many Bollywood films got an edge to their music.

He is married to Radhika Jolly. They have two children. Shaan affirms he survived for 20 years in the industry because he sang songs differently, even if they were of the same genre. Until and unless, you try to sing songs differently, you will not survive in the industry, he says. When you sing differently, you make your own sound, and you get to make your own footing.  Further, he believes, if he did not constantly innovate himself, he would be outdated.

Talking about how he got back into the non-film space, the singer had said that his wife, Radhika is his pillar of strength and helped him get over his fear of rejection. She encouraged him to make music for himself, and to enjoy what he is doing.  They have two sons.

For more information on Shaan, visit http://www.njpac.org/events/detail/shaan

For tickets to see Shaan, visit www.NJPAC.org or the NJPAC Box Office or call 888.GO. NJPAC (888.466.5722).

Salman Khan among 5 Bollywood stars sued for ‘million-dollar breach’ in US

The Chicago-based Vibrant Media Group in its lawsuit against the Bollywood artists, their agents alleged ‘breach of contract’.

NEW YORK(TIP): Superstar Salman Khan and a host of other Bollywood artists including Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha, Ranveer Singh and Prabhu Deva have been sued by an Indian-American promoter, which alleged that they refused to perform at a concert in the US despite having taken money from it.

The Vibrant Media Group in its lawsuit against the Bollywood artists and their agents Matrix India Entertainment Consultants Private Limited and Yashraj Films Private Limited alleged “breach of contract”.

According to the complaint, in 2013 the Vibrant Media Group had hired the artists to appear live and perform at the concert ‘Celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema’, which was to be held on September 1, 2013.

The show had to be cancelled as Salman Khan was unable to leave India due to legal troubles in Rajasthan. The Vibrant Media Group had agreed to postpone the event, the lawsuit said.

The Vibrant Media Group, according to the lawsuit, recently learned that Salman Khan and the other artists, instead of keeping their promise or even offer to return the deposits they had received for the performance, had agreed to perform with another promoter.

“All calls to Mr Khan, his agents, and other artists, for the return of the funds have gone unanswered,” the group said as it sought damages of at least USD 1 million.

According to the complaint, Vibrant Media paid more than USD 200,000 to Salman Khan in advance of the concert to be held at the Sears Centre in Chicago on September 1.

Katrina Kaif was paid USD 40,000 and Sonakshi Sinha USD 36,000. None of these funds have been returned, it alleged.

The lawsuit, filed by Chicago-based Vibrant Media Group before a Northern District Court of Illinois, Eastern Division on June 10, has been assigned to District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman.

Others sued by the promoter include superstar Akshay Kumar besides singers Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Usha Mangeshkar.

  • Being Salman: Superstardom does not guarantee legal immunity

Being Salman: Superstardom does not guarantee legal immunity

Finally, the law has caught up with superstar Salman Khan. All those who felt his earlier acquittal by the Rajasthan High Court in the 1998 Jodhpur blackbuck and chinkara poaching cases was a travesty of justice can now breathe easy. A Jodhpur Trial Court has pronounced him guilty, thus sending out an unambiguous signal that not even a hugely famous star is above the law. For too long, an impression has been gaining ground that star power can sway court judgments. Salman did get away in a more serious charge of allegedly running over five persons, killing one. That verdict had lent further credence to the widespread belief that onscreen stars are invincible in real life too. The Jodhpur Court judgment puts things in the right perspective.

As it is, the poaching case has been dragging for nearly two decades, reinstating once more how wheels of justice move tardily. And when it is perceived to be working for the privileged, it does little to elevate the judiciary’s image. The judgment establishes that Chief Judicial Magistrate Khatri meant business and could clearly delineate between Salman the person and the star. This difference is often blurred not just by frenzied fans, but those in power too. Not too long ago, perhaps taken in by Salman’s successful run at the box office and massive fan following, he became India’s Goodwill Ambassador for Rio Olympics. CJM Khatri, however, seemed suitably unimpressed by the entertainer’s mega stardom or his Samaritan acts off the silver screen.

Salman is in the dock regarding the infamous hit-and-run case, whose verdict has already been challenged and an appeal by the Maharashtra Government admitted in the Supreme Court. Let it be said that the rule of law must prevail, and guilt must be proved beyond reasonable doubt. Let no one feel that Salman walked away scot-free or was hounded courtesy his mega-star status. Justice should not only be done but seen to be done. Star or no star, law cannot be leveraged to the advantage of a few, least of all the well-heeled.

  • Salman Khan sentenced to five-year imprisonment in blackbuck killing case

Salman Khan sentenced to five-year imprisonment in blackbuck killing case

Actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, and Jodhpur resident Dushyant Singh have been given the benefit of doubt and acquitted as co-accused

JODHPUR, INDIA(TIP): Actor Salman Khan was on Thursday, April 5, sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted in a 19-year-old blackbuck poaching case by a court in Jodhpur.

Chief Judicial Magistrate (Jodhpur Rural) also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on Khan. The actor was taken to the Central Jail in Jodhpur from the court. He has the option of filing an appeal in the Sessions Court, reports our correspondent Mohammad Iqbal from Jodhpur. Unless the sentence is suspended, he will spend the night in jail.

Khan is involved in four cases related to blackbuck/chinkara poaching. He has been accused of killing two chinkaras at Bhavad village in Rajasthan in September 1998, a chinkara at the Ghoda farms in the State the next month and two blackbuck near Kankani village in the State in the same month. In addition, he is also accused of using two firearms with alleged expired licenses.

    ‘Judgement came as a surprise’

In an official statement, Mr. Khan’s lawyer Anand Desai said that the judgement came as a “surprise.”

    The statement reads:

“We respect the decision of the Hon’ble Court. While we are studying the judgement it just came as a surprise, as the entire investigation, and facts of this case were the same as those for which Salman has been acquitted by the Hon’ble High Court of Rajasthan in two cases, and even by the Hon’ble CJM in the Arms Act matter for the alleged offence on the very same night as is the subject matter of the present case. Also, in the present case the Hon’ble Court has acquitted all the 5 co-accused which would imply that Salman was out hunting alone in the middle of the night in a remote area outside Jodhpur. We have preferred an appeal to the Hon’ble Sessions Court and applied for an urgent hearing today. The Hon’ble Sessions Court will hear the appeal for suspension of the sentence / bail at 1030 tomorrow.”

Khan to spend the night in jail

Salman Khan’s counsel has moved bail application in the court of Additional Sessions Judge. It will come up for hearing on Friday morning. The actor will spend the night in Central Jail of Jodhpur.

    Four actors, Jodhpur resident acquitted

The co-accused, actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, and Jodhpur resident Dushyant Singh have been given the benefit of doubt and acquitted as the evidence against them was not strong enough.

Public prosecutor Bhawani Singh said he would speak to the government on the acquittal of other actors and decide on filing appeals in the Sessions Court.

    Quantum of punishment

Khan has been convicted under Section 9 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act. The maximum sentence under the law is six years.

If the sentence is for three years or less, the magistrate’s court is likely to suspend the punishment, reports Mohammad Iqbal. If more, Khan will have to move the Sessions Court for bail.

The charge against the other actors was under Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC. Their acquittal means the court has accepted that there is no sufficient evidence to prove this.

A brief timeline of the cases:

September-October 1998: Khan, along with his co-stars of Hum Saath Saath Hain, are accused of killing blackbuck/chinkaras during the shooting of the film.

February 2006: Khan is convicted under the Wildlife Act and given a one-year jail term for killing two chinkaras at Bhavad in September 1998. This is overturned after an appeal.

April 2006: A Jodhpur sessions court gives him a five-year-prison term in the second case, where he was accused of hunting a blackbuck in Ghoda farms. He spends three days in jail and gets bail.

June 2006: A Jodhpur court frames charges against the actors in the third case. The charges were framed against Khan under Section 51 (hunting) of the Wildlife Protection Act and against Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Dushyant Singh under Section 52 (abetment) of the Act.

November 2013: The Rajasthan High Court suspends the five-year sentence.

January 2015: The Supreme Court sets aside the High Court’s stay on the sentence.

July 2016: The High Court acquits Khan in the two chinakara poaching cases.

January 2017: A Jodhpur court acquits Khan in the Arms Case, where he was accused of possessing and weapons with an expired license during the hunt for chinkaras and blackbuck.

    Khan pleads ‘not guilty’

Khan had pleaded “not guilty” in the case and claimed that only a forensic report saying that the endangered animal died of “natural cause” was true.

“The rest of the evidence [against me] is false,” Khan said in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Jodhpur while recording his statement in the 18-year-old case accusing him of hunting the animals.

Khan killed the deer, says driver

The man who was driving the jeep used by Khan reiterated in 2016 his claim that the actor shot the animal. The statement by Harish Dulani, who was reported to be “missing,” came two days after the 50-year-old actor was acquitted by the High Court in two poaching cases.

  • PRIYANKA CHOPRA TERMINATES CONTRACT WITH NIRAV MODI, NOT SUING HIM YET

PRIYANKA CHOPRA TERMINATES CONTRACT WITH NIRAV MODI, NOT SUING HIM YET

Priyanka Chopra has decided to cut ties with billionaire diamond trader Nirav Modi’s brand following the news about the alleged banking fraud carried out by him. “In the light of recent allegations, Priyanka Chopra has chosen to terminate her contract with the Nirav Modi brand,” a spokesperson of Priyanka, who was the global brand ambassador for Nirav Modi, said in a statement issued on Friday.

As the news about the multi-crore scam involving Nirav Modi came to light earlier this month, a statement from the actor read that she was seeking legal opinion on her contract. There were also speculations that she is suing the brand for non-payment of dues. But her spokesperson denied this.

The termination news comes in the wake of after Kangana Ranaut and Bipasha Basu accusing Mehul Choksi-owned Gitanjali Group of breaching the contracts with them and not paying their dues.

Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, along with the directors of the Nirav Modi and Gitanjali groups, are under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for an alleged Rs 11,300 crore fraud on Punjab National Bank through illegal use of Letters of Undertaking and Foreign Letters of Credit to raise and roll over money.

Both Nirav Modi and Choksi are said to have left the country, along with their family members, in early January.

  • MANDIRA BEDI OPENS UP ABOUT WHY SHE HAD TO ‘COVER UP’ HER TATTOO

MANDIRA BEDI OPENS UP ABOUT WHY SHE HAD TO ‘COVER UP’ HER TATTOO

Along with making quirky style statements — noodle strap blouses, bob hairdo and religious tattoos on navel and nape — actor Mandira Bedi is known for apologetically following her heart.

However, it has not been a smooth ride.

In 2010, the actor got into trouble when her Ek Onkar tattoo — that she got made on the back of her neck in 2004 — left some fringe groups fuming.

Mandira recalls, “It all started during the 2007 Cricket World Cup tournament. And people in Punjab [after noticing the tattoo on TV were burning my effigies. I had to put an apology in newspapers, and things became calm for a while. But, a couple of years later, when I had worn a sari for an event in Ludhiana, some photographer clicked a photo and tried to incite things. Then around election time [in 2010], a criminal case was filed against me.” She adds that she felt bad for her parents who had to go through so much “as the apology was put in all vernacular papers in Punjab.”

It was then that she decided to cover it up in 2014. She says, “Although I found out later that there’s no case as such but I decided I’m not going to fight it now. If there are people who are narrow minded and having a problem with something like this, I wanted to get done with them.”

About its new version, she shares, “The central element is an African symbol that means ‘God is great’ and the wings symbolize: ‘now I am free’. Otherwise, whenever I used to go to Punjab, I had to hide my previous tattoo with a bandage or conceal it with makeup.” She also reveals that she went with tears in her eyes to the tattoo artist and asked him to cover it up.

Mandira maintains that it was unfortunate that her beliefs were questioned and taken out of context. “The idea was never to hurt anyone’s sentiment. It’s my body and I am not disrespecting it in any way.

The reason I got it in first place was because it meant [and still means] so much to me. Ek Onkar [God is One] is a beautiful philosophy, and I thought there’s nothing more permanent in my life than this. My grandmother used to have it on her hand and it’s something I’ve grown up with since I was a child,”she says.

  • Women I play on screen are an extension of me: Vidya

Women I play on screen are an extension of me: Vidya

Vidya Balan picked powerful women characters even before “female centric cinema” became mainstream in Bollywood and the actor, who has pioneered a change in the concept of the Hindi film heroine in the last decade, says her choices are often guided by her personal experiences.

Vidya has successfully established herself as an actor par excellence with films such as “Parineeta”, “Ishqiya”, “No One Killed Jessica”, “The Dirty Picture”, “Kahaani” and “Begum Jaan” among others.

But she says the films that are among her personal favorites and have become turning points in her career, are “Kahaani”, “The Dirty Picture” and her last release “Tumhari Sulu”.

“Every film or role that I have done has had some personal connection. All these women (characters) follow their heart and do exactly what they want to do and in a way they were all an extension of me,” Vidya told PTI in an exclusive interview.

“I am a shy person. There are two sides to me when the actor side comes out, I am different. I can do anything for the character but as a person, I am quite shy,” the actor adds.

Vidya, 39, counts her portrayal of Vidya Bagchi in the Sujoy Ghosh-directed movie as one of her finest performances. She says the only brief that Ghosh gave her was that the film would be about a pregnant woman who comes to Kolkata to look for her missing husband.

“I found the story interesting and said, ‘Let’s do it’. It (climax) developed organically and when he narrated it to me, it blew my mind. People who were approached for the film were not told about the (twist) ending.

Only, Sujoy, me, cinematographer, and the ADs knew about it. We kept it a secret,” she recalls. Vidya reveals she even lied to her pregnant sister about the ending of “Kahaani”, which is now counted among one of the best Hindi cinema thrillers.

The film, which went on to become a hit at the box office, however, faced many financial hurdles and was eventually shot on a shoestring budget.

“They could not get their head around the fact that it was about a pregnant woman and they were like, ‘Why would audiences want to see a pregnant woman in theatres’?
