  • Now ‘Manikarnika’ faces allegations of distorting history

Now ‘Manikarnika’ faces allegations of distorting history

Controversy over films based on historical characters fails to die down in Rajasthan as yet another right-wing fringe group Sarva Brahmin Mahasabha has demanded the state government to immediately stop the shooting of the Kangana Ranaut starrer ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’.

The film appears to be heading the “Padamaavat” way, as the group alleged the team of the period drama filming a love song in which Rani Laxmibai romances a British agent of the erstwhile East India Company, a claim which producer Kamal Jain denied.

“We have come to know that the filmmakers are shooting for a love song in which Rani Laxmibai is seen with a British agent of East India Company.

“We suspect that the producers are making the film based on the controversial book, Rani, written by Jaishree Misra, state president of the group Suresh Mishra said.

He said the protest would escalate if the administration failed to ensure that no historical facts are distorted in the epic biographical film.

Shooting would be allowed only after the film owners give an undertaking that no controversial scene would be shown in the movie, he said.

“We will meet the governor and home minister and if the government does not react to our demands, protests will be escalated within three days,” he added.

Mishra said that he had written to Jain on January 9 asking him to share the profile of the writers and the historians the producers had consulted.

“In order to check that the issue doesn’t blow up like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’, the government must ensure that nothing controversial is shown in the movie,” he said.

When asked about the accusations, producer Jain told PTI that there were “no romantic scene as claimed” by the group and the team had not received any letter as yet.

“There is nothing objectionable in the film.

There is no romantic scene as claimed. We are making a story on a great leader like Rani Laxmibai, the story revolves around her and her journey.

“It hurts when people say things like this against a woman who fought for the country.

We have nothing to hide, anyone can come and talk to us. We haven’t got any letter yet. We do not fear anything as we know what we are showing in the film,” he said.

  • YOU CAN NOT REPLICATE SOMEONE LIKE MADHURI DIXIT: JACQUELINE

YOU CAN NOT REPLICATE SOMEONE LIKE MADHURI DIXIT: JACQUELINE

Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez, who will be seen recreating Madhuri Dixit’s superhit song Ek Do Teen in Baaghi 2, has said the song is her tribute to the Bollywood’s dancing diva.

Asked if there was any pressure when she first heard that she was going to recreate Madhuri’s iconic song, Jacqueline said, “I think that was my first stress that how can we recreate something so iconic like ‘is it even possible’. It made a lot easier for me when I understood that it’s not possible, we are not trying to match up to what Madhuri Dixit and Saroj (Khan) ji did.”

“We are honestly here as big fans of their work and more than anything, this is honestly a tribute to the amazing, iconic number that they gave to us. For me as an actress, this is such an honour and a lot of my actress friends were like, ‘we are so jealous that you doing ‘Ek do teen’. So for any girl this would be a dream song to do,” she added.

The actor, who interacted with media after wrapping up the song on Saturday at Yash Raj Films studios, also said that she feels blessed to get an opportunity to dance on the foot tapping number from the 1988 film Tezaab for Baaghi 2.

“I feel really blessed that I have been given this opportunity by director Ahmed Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala and master ji Ganesh Acharya. I always knew that I never ever would be able to match up Madhuri Dixit and that’s not even something.I am going to even attempt because you can not replicate someone like Madhuri Dixit. There is only one Madhuri Dixit and I know that this is just my tribute to her,” she said. Baaghi 2, starring Tiger Shroff, is the sequel to the 2016 film Baaghi. The film, which also stars Disha Patani, is produced by Nadiadwala under the banner name Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and presented by Fox Star Studios. It will release on March 30.

Did she contact Madhuri to take some tips? “I have connected with Madhuri ji. We will be chatting little more about how the song went once it done because right now, I am under lot of stress. My only focus over the past week has been this one song and of course, they (Madhuri and Saroj Khan) will be the first persons to whom we will show the song. We have already taken their blessings,” Jacqueline said.

She has made a smooth transition from Bollywood to Hollywood, but it’s not just her work that’s keeping Priyanka Chopra in news these days. The Baywatch actor, who is all set to return to Hindi films, recently opened up on her relationship status.

For the longest time, Priyanka has remained tight-lipped about her relationship status. Back in 2016, when she was asked about her marriage plans, she said in an interview, “When there is a ring on my finger, which is actually given to me, then Ill tell the world. Till then no one can claim me.”

Cut to 2018, Priyanka in an interview to Filmfare admitted that she was in a very committed relationship until last year.

“I’m a serial monogamist. I was in a very committed relationship. But since almost a year, I’ve been single. I’ve met a bunch of people. I’ve gone out with people. I let someone woo me but no. My mind hasn’t exploded, not yet!,” Priyanka told the magazine.

The 35-year-old actor says that she is single after a long time and is getting a lot of attention. But she’s not in the right frame of find to get into a relation. “I’ve been single after a really really long time. I get a lot of attention. But I don’t know what to do with it. Of course, I like it. I’m a girl and I’m vain,” she added.

On the work front, Priyanka has two Hollywood films in pipeline – A Kid Like Jake and Isn’t It Romantic?

Anushka has previously produced “NH 10″ and “Phillauri”. Both the films featured her in the lead role. “Pari” also has KriArj Entertainment as one of the producers.

In the first look released on June 13 last year, the actor, who played a friendly ghost in “Phillauri”, gave some serious haunting vibes.

Pari is Anushka’s third film as producer (Clean Slate Films) after 2015’s critically acclaimed NH10 and this year’s Phillauri, which wasn’t as successful as NH10. Of the sort of films she wants to produce, Anushka told news agency IANS: “At Clean Slate, our endeavour is to tell stories that are not only meaningful and different, but also push the boundaries.”

DEEPIKA PADUKONE IN NEW BADASS COP LOOK

Deepika Padukone was spotted shooting for an advertisement in Mumbai, in which she was dressed as a cop – a welcome departure from her ethnic outfits and heavy jewellery during outings and promotions.

We loved that too but a change is always good. And look at how superb Deepika looks in fitted khaki trousers and crisp white shirt with her hair tied in an elegant back bun.

Also just saying, her rumoured boyfriend Ranveer Singh’s cop look in upcoming film Simmba has got nothing on Deepika’s swag.

What say? Fan clubs posted pictures of Deepika Padukone dressed as cop relaxing on the bonnet of a jeep.

Deepika Padukone is currently awaiting the release of Padmaavat, which is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film’s original release date was December 1 last year, but due to the Central Board Of Film Certification’s delay, the film will now release on January 25.

Padmaavat, which was originally titled Padmavati, was cleared for release with a U/A certificate and five alterations including the title.

Padmaavat faced massive opposition (and continues to face) from Rajput Karni Sena and other fringe outfits which opposed the film’s release over alleged factual inaccuracies.

Several states have also banned the film’s release.

Vidya Balan: ‘Tumhari Sulu’ proved married actresses can score a hit

Vidya Balan said with back-to-back box office disappointments post her wedding, she gave into the thinking that married female actors cannot deliver a hit, but the success of ‘Tumhari Sulu’ has proved the theory wrong. Vidya said for someone like her, who considers acting as important as personal life, the praise the movie is receiving is a major confidence booster.

“Success and failures are a part of life. Every day is not a Sunday. The only thing as an artiste I can do is keep moving forward, keep working hard and keep growing. • “Padmavati” Sets India on Fire: Deepika Threatened, Provided Security Cover

“Padmavati” Sets India on Fire: Deepika Threatened, Provided Security Cover

Protests Force government assurance that Censor Board will weigh in Public Sentiment

NEW DELHI (TIP): The controversy over Bollywood film “Padmavati” has set India on fire. The situation took an ugly turn on November 16 when a leader of the Rajput Karni Sena cited Ramayana’s Surpanakha nose-chopping incident and warned Deepika Padukone against “inciting” sentiments.

Reacting to the development, the Mumbai police have stepped up the actor’s security.

Meanwhile, protests were held in several parts of the country, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, against the movie, which is slated to be released on December 1.

Amid raging row over Bollywood movie ‘Padmavati’ and Rajput Karni Sena’s open threat to actress Deepika Padukone, Union minister Uma Bharti said, November 16 she had been assured that the Censor Board would take care of the issues being raised by the Rajput community.

Her Cabinet colleague Nitin Gadkari also reacted on the issue. “Filmmakers must also keep cultural sensitivities in mind,” he said.

“I have been assured that the Censor Board will take care of all issues. I am confident that they are already informed about the concerns being raised by the people… The director and his associate are responsible for the film story. They should have taken care of the sentiments and historical facts,” she added

Just like disrespect to Padmavati was “immoral”, so was that to the film’s artistes (read Padukone), she said. “If we are talking about respect of Padmavati, it is our moral obligation that we respect every woman… Disrespect of any actress or actor of ‘Padmavati’ is uncalled for and immoral,” Bharti said, an obvious reference to the threat of physical harm to Deepika.

President of the Rajasthan unit of Karni Sena Mahipal Singh Makrana has been quoted as saying that they would not hesitate to chop off Deepika’s nose like Shurpanakha. “Rajputs never raise hand on women, but if the need be, we will do to Deepika what Lakshman did to Shurpanakha,” he said. Padukone had recently termed as “appalling” the violent protests over the film.

Meanwhile, Ajmer dargah deewan Sayed Zainul on Thursday, November 16, compared filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Salman Rushdie, Tasleema Nasreen and Tareq Fateh

He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban the movie that hurt “religious sentiments” of every citizen, including Rajput community at large

“Bhansali’s character is like that of Rushdie, Tasleema and Tareq who always twists or distorts historical facts and hurts religious feelings of people, hence every Muslim should support the cause of Rajput community,” Deewan said in a statement in Jaipur.

‘Defending the film maker and the film artist Padukone, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took a dig at those criticizing Padukone by questioning their silence during British era’.

“Every single one of these so-called valorous maharajas, who today are after a Mumbai filmmaker, were less concerned about their honor when the British were trampling all over it. They scurried to accommodate themselves. So, let’s face it, there is no question, that we were complicit”, said Shashi Tharoor.

The uproar against Padmavati has once again revived the question of freedom of expression. We may see the debate getting louder over the next few days.

  • DEEPIKA SEEKS TO BRUSH AWAY ‘PADMAVATI’ REMUNERATION ROW

DEEPIKA SEEKS TO BRUSH AWAY ‘PADMAVATI’ REMUNERATION ROW

Actress Deepika Padukone on Tuesday sought to brush away the matter of her remuneration for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’, which is reportedly more than co-stars Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, saying she was “comfortable” with what she got.

“Talking about my remuneration is not exciting for me. I am confident and comfortable with what I am paid,” she said at the 3D version trailer launch of the upcoming film.

“But let me tell you something and this is something I am really proud of is the fact that people like them (co-producer Viacom and director Bhansali) have invested this kind of money on a film like this and poster like this…that for me is hugely encouraging… this is the biggest film that Indian cinema has seen not in just terms of scale but in terms of budget and resources, and what is the poster behind it? For me that is the turning point for Indian cinema,” she added.

About the uni-brow looks her character Rani Padmini sports in the film, Deepika said she feels women are conditioned to think of beauty in certain way.

“Women have been conditioned to think of beauty in a certain way and I am glad with what we did with ‘Padmavati’ and my look. It takes immense amount of belief, not just for me but for my director as well, to take that risk. “Padmini’s beauty is beyond physical beauty. It is her soul, spirit and what she meant to her people. She is worshipped.”

Deepika also said that the role was extremely challenging and different than Mastani in ‘Bajirao Mastani’.

“Her (Rani Padmini’s) battles were very different. Her power and energy is very different. She doesn’t go out to battle field. She doesn’t have a sword or armour, here the spirit is similar.

“Her purity, intensity and values, are very relatable and identifiable, yet not in a literal sense. And for an actor, I found that even more difficult,” she said. “With Mastani, if I have to show a warrior princess, it is easier for me to have a sword, get a battle field, do horse-riding, and show exactly going to war is actually like.

“But how do you fight so much more than just a war? You’re standing up for your tradition, culture, heritage, passion and love, there is so much that is going on, how do you stand up for all that, just by emoting without any tools. That is what I found extremely challenging for me, with Padmavati,” she added.

On the tussle with Karni Sena and the recent Rangoli incident, Deepika said: “Whatever I had to say, I said it. Whatever was supposed to happen has happened! Like I always say, now nothing and no one can stop this film.”

Bollywood’s ‘monkey couple’ Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover were recently seen together in a condom ad.

Soon after the ad surfaced online, internet trollers targetted the celebrity couple for endorsing it.

Bipasha who is known for her boldness said,”The idea is to create awareness on the subject; it’s the need of the hour. I am doing no wrong by endorsing condoms.” She expressed her disappointment on how ‘sex’ is still considered taboo in India through a tweet.

Although some appreciated the actor for her initiative to spread awareness, others shamed her. Some troller advised, “Bipasha Basu, not sure you should be doing this. Wait and explore good cinema. You do have a brand value.” Another troller took a potshot at her career, saying, “No movies been offered to these two, so they have to resort to cheesy commercials.”

  • MOVIE REVIEW : JUDWAA 2

    MOVIE REVIEW : JUDWAA 2

CAST: Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Taapsee Pannu
    DIRECTION: David Dhawan
    GENRE: Comedy
    DURATION: 2 hours 30 minutes

    STORY

Raja (Varun) and Prem (Varun, again) are conjoined twins, who have similar reflexes. They are separated at birth by a smuggler, Charles (Zakir Hussain), who kidnaps Raja.

The geek Prem grows up in the lap of luxury in London with his parents, the Malhotras; loud Raja finds shelter in a Mumbai’s fisherman’s colony. Of course when the twins’ paths cross, there’s too much fun.

    REVIEW

When you enter the movie hall for this outing, remember to let your hair down and guffaw because from the opening scene itself you’re familiar with the tropes. David Dhawan who has made three dozen vacuous comedies, with an enviable success ratio. He was even crowned the undisputed king of comedy once. Here, he gives you a rebooted version of his 1997 comic-caper of the same name. The earlier one had Salman Khan, this one has Varun. It helps that the leading man has a mammoth following with today’s kids. And, he is viewed by those clued into Hindi mainstream cinema as a combination of Govinda and Salman, both of who carried off their kitsch routine with a certain flair. Varun doesn’t let you down either. Whether he is playing a geek or a goon, he is absolutely endearing and delivers, exactly what his daddy orders him to.

The script (if you can call it that) is a combination of familiar gags borrowed from Manmohan Desai films. The sidekick stammers, the hero repeats dialogue from various masala movies, the villain develops amnesia when hit by a coconut, a football butt allows his memory to return, etc.

There’s nothing intelligible here so please stop searching. It’s basically innocent fun meant to pander to the child in you. The only ‘wicked’ thing here are the heroines’ skimpy costumes (just kidding). The girls, Samara (Taapsee) and Alishka (Jacqueline) are brought out for chartbusters – Chalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12 and Oonchi Hai Building. They sportingly kiss, cuddle and are happy horsing around doing precious little.

Lame lyrics, loud gags and leggy lasses never really hurt anyone. Believe me, at one point, you’re tempted to join Varun when he is doing those perfect pelvic thrusts. Judwaa 2 could be a substitute for your Dussehra party. Consult Salman, even he sportingly shows up in a cameo in the end.
