MARRIAGE ON CARDS, BUT DON’T KNOW WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN: ANUSHKA

“I friend zone guys very quickly. I always draw a line. In industry Ranbir Kapoor is my very good friend. We have recently worked a lot together and share a good bonding.”

  • Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh – MOVIE REVIEW

Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) has only one obsession in life. She wants to see her teenage daughter Mini, who is paralysed waist-downwards, walk again. But, is this scenario as obvious as it seems? Or is Vidya an impersonator of Durga Rani Singh from Kalimpong, who is wanted for kidnapping and murder?

REVIEW: This sequel directed by Sujoy Ghosh after a gap of four years is a whodunit that definitely serves up intrigue, but fails to keep a tight grip on proceedings throughout its duration. So unlike the first part, that hit the ground running and set a benchmark in the genre, this one lacks the shark-bite. But you do invest in Vidya Sinha, a harrowed, working mum from Chandan Nagar in West Bengal and her handicapped teenage daughter, who like most middle-class people overcome hurdles to go through the daily grind. So much so, that when Mini goes missing and Vidya meets an accident, there is a sense of void. Enter, Indrajit(Arjun Rampal), the cop-on-the-case, who is the first one to discover that the woman in a coma resembles Durga(Vidya Balan again!), a school clerk from Kalimpong, who is a fugitive-on-the-run.

Here it is important to say that the film works because Vidya the mother or Durga the murderer are both believable and solid characters. As is the cop piecing the mystery together. And, to give out anything more about the plot is unfair.

Shot majorly at night and on real locations, the film has the authentic texture. If you fell in love with Kolkata in the 2012 outing, you will love Kalimpong here. The background score gives stomach-knots (as it must) and the camera work is good.

Vidya, shorn of make-up and glamour breezes through her dual role in autopilot mode. Arjun impresses as the cop hankering for a promotion and is believable as the husband. If you have an appetite for thrillers (albeit, with some flaws) give this one a try.

MADE MY WAY ON MY OWN WITH NO HELP: PRIYANKA CHOPRA

She began her journey in showbiz with no starry links and has won global recognition due to her talent. Actress Priyanka Chopra says she is grateful to fans for putting her ‘in a position’ where she is ‘used to being the face on a poster’. But she wants to do more. The actress also said that “whatever she has achieved is due to her own hard work, without the help and support of anybody else”.

“I started with nothing, no support. A complete newcomer to even Mumbai city, not even the movie industry. I didn’t even know anyone. So I kind of did all that, I did on my own without the help and support of anybody,” Priyanka said.

“The love and affection I have got from audiences around the world kind of gave me the strength to do that. They have put me in a position where I am used to being the face on a poster. I don’t want to settle for that.”

Priyanka talked about her career in an interview with a channel when she flew down to Toronto to unveil the trailer of production venture

‘Sarvann’. Priyanka was crowned Miss India and went on to win the Miss World title at age 17. Her Bollywood debut came in 2003 with ‘The Hero: Love Story of a Spy’.

After that there was no looking back.

The actress made waves with international singles like ‘In my city’ and ‘Exotic’ before heading to the international TV space as Alex Parrish in ‘Quantico’, which launched in 2015.

The actress is currently seen in ‘Quantico’ Season 2, which is aired in India on Star World and Star World. ‘Quantico’ before, specially coming here for a Punjabi film which has such a strong Punjabi community, just seems like the ideal place to launch it.”

  • Dear Zindagi – MOVIE REVIEW

    Dear Zindagi – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Kaira (Alia) is an astute cinematographer who is bohemian in her approach to life. Enter Dr Jehangir Khan (Shah Rukh), a top-notch therapist, who helps her lay her innermost demons to rest.

dear-zindagiREVIEW: In a scene from the film, Alia who is heartbroken, bites into a green chilli. As her eyes cloud over, she looks at her best buddy Fatima (Ira Dubey) and says — “the chilli is pungent.’’ Tears, silly fears and frailties all part of the life process. So brave it we must. This kind of sums up the life lesson writer-director Gauri Shinde’s second directorial film imparts.

But unlike her first film English Vinglish that hit the bullseye subtly, here the message is hammered. Of course some of the writing has merit. There are funny and clever one-liners. There are numerous analogies drawn to explain the innumerable relationships one encounters in today’s fast-fleeting urban life. Some of this makes you chuckle, some of it makes you cry. So far so good. However, the first half of the film meanders, making you restless. Frankly, things actually begin to look up just before intermission when SRK, without his trademark outstretched arms, makes an appearance.

As said earlier, the protagonist played by Alia flits like a butterfly from Raghuvendra (Kunal) to Sid

(Angad) and later to Rumi (Ali). And there is a backstory to show why she is so messed up. Honestly, her angst bites to some degree but not entirely.

To analyse why she is the way she is, Alia makes an appointment with SRK a DD (dimaag ka doctor) in Goa. It is on his couch that she is able to voice her fears. As he meticulously picks up the pieces of her past and

‘pieces’ her together, the film allows the viewer too to confront some of their own anxieties. So it isn’t all in vain.

Feisty Alia, one of the better actors of the current generation, turns in a nicely nuanced performance. And SRK in his sober-avatar possessing infinite gyaan tempts you to seek out a therapist. If you’re in the mood to do some soul-searching this weekend, this film could do it for you.

  • ROCK ON 2 – Movie Review

ROCK ON 2 – Movie Review

Story: Having retreated into a shell and turned his back on music, Aditya (Akhtar) is now a do-gooder who seeks to spread joy in a quiet corner of Northeast India. But there is little joy in his own life. While one track of Rock On 2 follows the band seeking to reunite in the face of Aditya Shroff’s cussed foot-dragging, the other focuses on Jiah’s (Shraddha) battle to break free and follow her heart.

It was as many as eight years ago that the motley Rock On!! band of boys, led by an enthusiastic first-time actor-singer Farhan Akhtar and orchestrated ably by director Abhishek Kapoor, arrived in our midst and struck an instant chord. What that film achieved may not have been earth-shattering. But it still remains surprisingly fresh in our minds. The world, of course, has moved on since. And so, as we learn from the sequel, have the members of the once-thriving rock band Magik.

Why, then, does Rock On 2 look and sound so last decade? The answer is pretty obvious: because it is last decade both in conception and execution.

Much of it centres on investment banker-turned-band front-man-turned-philanthropist Aditya Shroff (Farhan Akhtar), who, after a good run, is on a massive guilt trip triggered by a tragic mishap that he holds himself responsible for.

Notwithstanding the apparent hard work that director Shujaat Saudagar has put into repackaging the original tropes, Rock On 2 appears too bent upon sticking to the old ways to be consistently engaging, let alone exciting.

To put it simply, Rock On 2 is a middling attempt to revive the magic of the 2008 original. Not only is the music on offer here (by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) unable to hold a candle to the earlier score, the film, as a whole, rarely hits the right emotional notes.

Rock On!! was marked by spunk and spontaneity. Rock On 2 is unabashedly manipulative, constantly seeking to push the audience in contrived directions.

Although much broader in scope and ambition, the sequel is disappointingly bland. Neither the old band members nor the two new entrants, including the film’s young and determined female protagonist, lend much weight to the laboured drama.

Band newbie Shraddha Kapoor plays Jiah Sharma, a girl who faces severe opposition from her conservative classical musician father (an as-efficient-as-ever Kumud Mishra), as she fights to make it big as a rock singer.

The heaviest burden of the mouthful lyrics is borne by Shraddha Kapoor, who as a closet singer does an otherwise decent job of a girl tentatively exploring her talent and giving her vocal chords a try. In the so carefully careless look borne by the rest of the stars, particularly Akhtar, and at times Rampal, hers is a very interesting take of a girl experimenting with clothes and make-up, and struggling to decide on one. Kapoor or Jiya’s story is a father, a classical musician, who treats every music that doesn’t confirm to his purist tastes as blasphemy.

THERE IS NOTHING CALLED MAINSTREAM OR ART FILMS: KAJOL

Kajol, who has signed up a film with the ‘Ship of Theseus’ director Anand Gandhi, says she doesn’t differentiate between films as mainstream cinema or art cinema. The actress, who was last seen in Rohit Shetty directorial ‘Dilwale’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan, said, “I don’t agree with this thinking completely. There is nothing which can be called as mainstream or art film. There are only good films and bad films.”

“We make films so that audience can enjoy it, leave their troubles behind, and lose themselves into that story and those characters. And I believe I am going to make good films,” she said.

Gandhi has written and directed critically acclaimed plays like ‘Sugandhi’, ‘Pratyancha’, ‘Kshanotsav, Na and Janashtaru’ and a Gujarati play ‘Chal Reverse Ma Jaiye’.

The movie will be an adaptation of one of his plays and Kajol’s husband and actor Ajay Devgn will produce it. Kajol, 41, also spoke about the concept of beauty.

“I feel that in today’s age, people have much more knowledge than what we had. They know about sunblock, I didn’t. They know about skincare regime, dermatologists and I think it is a necessity today.”

Asked about her opinion on actors opening up about themselves in public, Parineeti said, “It’s great! To each his or her own. Some people are private, some people are comfortable talking. Obviously, as actors, whatever is happening in our life the whole world gets to know because it is reported by the media. You can choose what information to put out there and what not to.”

Parineeti made her Bollywood debut in 2011 with Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and since then has been on a roll. She says while her launch pad in filmdom came easily, “the struggle was after that”. “Clinching Ishaqzaade or other films, performing and those films doing well or not… That was the struggle,” said the actor, who was earlier working with Yash Raj Films as a public relations consultant. “Right now I’m in a good place and happy with where I am, happy with the things that are happening. So, yeah, it’s been really good,” she added while reflecting on her journey.

  • I grew up poor; where I’m today is my biggest achievement: Nargis Fakhri

I grew up poor; where I’m today is my biggest achievement: Nargis Fakhri

Actor Nargis Fakhri enjoys her work, but says she won’t let it “consume” her life. That explains the recent speculation about her quitting Bollywood for good to be with her family in New York, US. As she turned a year older on October 20, the 37-year-old clarifies she’d come by when she has a good film offer in hand, and that life is about experiencing different things.

“For me, life isn’t about what it is for everyone else… like ‘oh career… I have to do this, I have to be married by a certain age’. It is about doing anything new that adds to my knowledge. Work is only a piece in my life. It doesn’t consume my whole life. I want to take vacations, meet friends, and spend time with family and my mother,” says Nargis.

This realisation dawned on her when recently; someone told her that she wasn’t ambitious enough. Talking about her priorities in life being different, Nargis says, “I am ambitious about life, about doing different things, meeting new people and being a positive person. My ambition is geared in a different direction so many people don’t understand it. It is not just limited to a professional sphere. Also because I grew up very poor. For me, where I am today, compared to where I came from, is my biggest achievement. I’m so proud of myself.” The actor adds that she prefers real connections over materialistic possessions. “When we die, we can’t take our money or any materialistic things. When you are so focused in this business, you have less time for friends and family and real, solid connections. To me connecting with a human holds more value than a bag, shoes or a fancy car,” says Nargis.

So what would be an alternate career option if not acting? “Travelling”, she says instantly . “I feel more passionately about healthy living than anything else. I like spreading positivity. So something in the health and wellness space. I’ll try to explore that area to see where I fit in,” says Nargis. Source: HT
