  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal invites NRIs to Invest in his State

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal invites NRIs to Invest in his State

NEW YORK (TIP): The Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal, has appealed to the non-resident Indians (NRIs) in New York to come forward and help in the development of their paternal villages and support the efforts being made by the state government. The NRIs could do so by participating in the Adarsh Gram Yojana, a Government of India scheme which has been adopted by the Haryana Government, he said.

Addressing the NRIs at a program held in New York, August 17, the Chief Minister said that the 15 MPs and 90 MLAs of Haryana were engaged in ensuring development of villages under the Adarsh Gram Yojana but the number of villages in Haryana exceeds 6,500. The NRIs of Haryana origin could adopt the remaining villages and help in their development.

Those present on the occasion assured the Chief Minister of all possible support.

Speaking at another event organized by Non Resident Indians to honor him in New York  the Chief Minister said that in its 10-month tenure, the Haryana Government had formulated a new industrial policy. While people from India and the rest of the world connected to Haryana would invest under the policy, those from across the globe also consider Haryana an ideal state, whether they want to invest in a welfare project or achieve their targets by investing in an earning project, he said.

The Chief Minister said that Haryana has witnessed a remarkable growth in terms of infrastructure. While the State had only four National Highways till now, nine National Highways are being built to connect the districts. The State has an abundance of raw material for industries, which could be transported easily as a result of these new road projects.

The Chief Minister said that Haryana being an agrarian state, the setting up and promotion of agro-based industries, food processing, pharma, information technology, auto, defense production, aerospace and aircraft industries would remain a priority for the Haryana Government. “Agro-industries are being set up in Haryana. Besides, Haryana will work further with major companies like IBM, Harley Davidson and Hollister, which have more than 1,000 projects, so that our industries can advance in an appropriate manner,” he added.

Welcoming those investing in Haryana, the Chief Minister invited others to take advantage of facilities offered by the State and invest in Haryana.

Later, the Chief Minister , addressed investors at a meeting of the US India Business Council in Washington on August 19.

Emphasizing investment opportunities in Haryana, Chief Minister Manohar Lal said, “We strive to attract both international and domestic business in to the state of Haryana. To achieve this end, I am proud of the reform efforts that have gone in to making public services more efficient- land registration is now enabled through information technology (IT), long-pending land acquisition cases have been resolved and infrastructure construction is faster as evidenced by the completion of the Delhi-Faridabad Metro project and restarting of work on Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway. We are pushing for policy reforms in a manner that will place Haryana as a business-friendly state and create jobs. I welcome American enterprise to be a part of our state’s growth.”

Lauding the vision of Chief Minister Manohar Lal, Mukesh Aghi, President of USIBC, said, “Since 2000, the state of Haryana has emerged as a major investment hub in Northern India. The city of Gurgaon is a key center for the information technology and automotive industries. The state’s Enterprise Promotion Policy 2015 aims at enhancing ease of doing business, promotes micro, small-scale and medium enterprises and encourages long-term investment in the state to flourish. All these measures are critical for not just enhancing the perception of doing business in India, but also indicate the reality of ease of doing business.”

Sonny Khurana, President and CEO of iTECH, a leading distribution company in the telecom sector, said, “Haryana, with its diversified economy and vibrant cities is well positioned to leverage initiatives such as Make in India and Smart Cities. Emerging markets are important for iTECH’s business model. A pro-growth government, under the visionary leadership of Mr. Manohar Lal, places Haryana as a strong hub for future investment opportunities.”

The round table discussion focused on key areas for investment promotion in the state that include energy related initiatives, aerospace, food processing, auto/auto components and mass rapid transport.

The event was attended by companies and senior leaders from every major sector of business-Blumberg Grain, IREO, Coca Cola, Wipro, Capital Novus, Cargill, Medtronic, Uber and Boston Scientific.

Rajiv Khanna, President of India-America Chamber of Commerce was optimistic about Haryana Chief Minister’s visit

Commenting on the visit of Haryana Chief Minister, Rajiv Khanna, President of India-America Chamber of Commerce, a binational chamber of commerce which is the focal point of cross border investments between the U.S. and India, said: ” We continue to be optimistic that states like Haryana would lead the country towards growth, prosperity and a greater economic co-operation with the United States. This does not mean that we under estimate the challenge in achieving these goals, particularly those posed by the failure of the Indian Parliament to pass the much needed legislations during the recent monsoon session that would have expedited the realization of these goals. It only means that we expect the state chief minister and his team to rise to the challenge and make it happen even with this setback, because failure is not an option for India.”

On arrival in New York on August 16, Manohar Lal first went to the Memorial Tower in Downtown Manhattan and paid his homage to the victims of 9/11.

    Brothers – Movie Review

STORY: Prize-fighters David and Monty are bitterly estranged  brothers – who wins when they face each other in the ring?

REVIEW: So, Brothers is essentially Akshay Kumar’s triumph, with some knock-out moments – and a few punches that fall flat. Gary Fernandes (Jackie) is a prize-fighter married to Maria (Shefali). They have one son, David (Akshay) – and then, Monty (Siddharth), born from Gary’s extra-marital affair, appears. An old school potboiler where self-sacrificing mother is the cause of fire, Brothers simmers with emotion and action in a new shiny pan. When one becomes the pivot for the other, results are often whistle-inducing. Here director Karan Malhotra egged on by trainer Karan Johar provides enough kicks to keep the galleries in the game.

An adaptation of Warriors, Karan draws heavily from Gavin O’Connors’ film but ultimately he manages to place his own beast in the ring. It is full of clichés that we associate with this kind of blood fest but both the emotional and physical fights are skilfully staged so that you can’t punch the film into the mocking corner. It reminds of Apne. In fact, one smirks when one of the big names in the ring is called Luca. Remember it took the whole Deol family to outwit him. Here the emotions are more internalised and the fights are more stylised and realistic.

Monty’s mother passing on, the boy has nowhere to go. After turmoil, Maria accepts him into their home. David becomes Monty’s protective big brother – but relationships shatter when Gary’s drinking causes a tragic accident. The brothers bitterly split – only to face each other in a prize-fight years later.

Who wins this battle over body, soul – and memories?

Brothers features Akshay Kumar in one of his best roles. Sans his trademark twinkle, Akshay is grimly severe here, using tense muscles and intense silences rather than Gabbar Is Back-style bombast. With greying hair and soft, sad eyes, Akshay carries Brothers on his shoulders, meriting applause for a vulnerable, memorable performance.

    The other performances are weaker.

Siddharth Malhotra remains an enigma wrapped in a mystery, with few dialogues and limited expressions. The lack of fire in Siddharth’s Monty just doesn’t build up a sense of furious clash – instead, it makes the brothers’ face-off curiously flat.

In contrast, Jackie Shroff’s Gary melodramatically blusters around, first soaked in boozy arrogance, then weeping wretchedness, but neither grips. As David’s wife Jenny, Jacqueline’s pretty but inconsistent, resembling the script which mentions David and Jenny have three jobs each, but shows us one out of six.

The cameos work better. In a brittle little role, Shefali conveys trembling, conflicted emotions while Ashutosh Rana as a cheeky manager and Kiran Kumar, as a martial arts promoter covered in mystery and cigar smoke, pad this drama well.

On the plus side, Brothers adapts Hollywood hit Warrior with a Bollywood beat. The script builds a powerful contrast between a bleak first half and a lively second. Following brothers-mothers movies like Deewar, Brothers revisits Bollywood’s ‘Ma’ obsession, offering action, adrenalin and abs too.

However, its angst could have hit a much harder punch – for when blood sours, it explodes.

But Brothers, despite mouthing, ‘Har sport mein thora drama toh hota hai’, only skims that dramatic surface. It could’ve dived in deeper.

Indian Consul General Mulay Rings Nasdaq Closing Bell on Independence Day

NEW YORK:  India’s Consul General Dnyaneshwar Mulay invited American individuals and companies to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship projects ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ as he, accompanied by Bollywood star Arjun Rampal, rang the closing bell at Nasdaq to celebrate India’s 69th Independence Day.

Mr Mulay and Mr Rampal visited the Nasdaq market site in Times Square in New York yesterday to ring the traditional Closing Bell.

This was the sixth year that India’s Consul General rang the closing bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange to commemorate the country’s independence day.

Mr Mulay underlined the “growing thriving relationship” between India and the US.

He said India’s economy is rapidly transforming and requires huge investments across various sectors.

“Prime Minister Modi has initiated a number of reforms and flagship projects like Digital India, Make in India, Clean India and the Smart cities program,” he said.

“I want American people to join in this great economic reforms movement. I also want more and more Indian companies coming to America (and to) Nasdaq,” he said.

Welcoming Mr Mulay and Mr Rampal, Nasdaq Senior Vice President Bob McCooey said there is no better place to celebrate India’s independence day than at Times Square, which is the “crossroads of the world.”

Mr McCooey noted Nasdaq’s growing presence in India, “which is on its way to becoming a global powerhouse.”

Referring to the “great entrepreneurship” and “fantastic companies” in India, he expressed hope that many more Indian companies will list at Nasdaq in the future.

Currently five Indian companies are listed at Nasdaq and have a combined market capitalisation of USD 43 billion. These include MakeMyTrip.com, Rediff, Videocon d2h and Cognizant.

“For us in Nasdaq, this has now become an annual event. This is the sixth time we have been honored with your presence here to celebrate the independence day,” Mr McCooey said amid huge cheers and applause from the large number of Indian-Americans who had gathered for the closing bell ceremony.

Mr Rampal, dressed in a dark blue shirt and gray coat, tweeted after the bell ceremony, “Feeling super proud to be an Indian. Independence Day celebrations begin.”

Mr Rampal will be the Grand Marshal at the 35th India Day Parade tomorrow that will run through several streets in the heart of Manhattan.

Commemorating the country’s independence day, flag hoisting ceremonies will be held at the Consulate as well as at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN’s premises.

  • JACQUELINE FERNANDEZ KEEN ON DOING ACTION FILM

JACQUELINE FERNANDEZ KEEN ON DOING ACTION FILM

Actress Jacqueline Fernandez, who will be next seen in action-drama film
“Brothers”, says she is keen on doing a full fledged action role.

Her co-stars in the Karan Malhotra movie, Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra, have done hard core action sequences in the film. “I felt so left out. I was sitting at home and all these guys were doing action. I am a sports buff and I have athletic personality. I have been dying to do action (film) for a long time. Hopefully, I will be able to do one soon,” Jacqueline told .

The “Kick” actress said she yearns to do an action film as she thinks it is empowering to see women essaying such roles on-screen.

“Action is my favorite thing to do in cinema and I think it is so empowering when you see a women doing it. As very rarely you get to see it. We have such great and strong women in the industry who can pull off as action heroines,” the 30-year-old actress said.

“With good script and character, I would like to tap into that (action film),” she added.

One can recollect that Jacqueline was offered the role of ‘Kaya’ in Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 3. Later, it was done by actress Kangana Ranaut. “That was my one opportunity to do action but I missed it,” she said. In Brothers, which is a story of two estranged brothers, Jacqueline has an interesting role, which is a crucial part of the storyline. “The film is about two brothers but unless you know their back story you won’t be able to feel for their motive behind what they are doing. For me, Jenny (her character) and Jackie Shroff’s character (who plays the role of a father) get an insight into their lives,” Jacqueline said.

“It is a very challenging character. In the film, I am in a huge dilemma in life as my daughter is dying and we as a family can’t afford to pay for her treatment. We are afraid of losing her and I am afraid of losing my husband,” she said. Jacqueline thinks the audiences will be able to relate to her character as it deals with real life situations.

AUDIENCE APPRECIATION IS MY NATIONAL AWARD, SAYS SALMAN KHAN

Superstar Salman Khan says the love he has got from the audience for his latest release Bajrangi Bhaijaan is his national award.

His co-star Kareena Kapoor recently said in an interview that she feels Salman might get the coveted recognition for his work in the superhit movie. “It is sweet of people to say that (National Award). I think there are a lot of other people who deserve national award than me. I appreciate that. People have loved the film …watched it three four times.. that is the national award for me,” Salman said.

On his acting skills being lauded, Salman says, “I haven’t considered myself as a star or actor. This is my badappan (modesty).” The 49-year-old actor is elated with the response to the film. “There was a feeling that it would do well. We did expect that people would appreciate the film… and we got to know that we were on the same wave length. Whenever we make films on India-Pakistan, we deal with army and terrorists. We have never shown the normal side of people in both the countries. We were dealing with humanity and people have liked that,” he said.

  • Bangistan – MOVIE REVIEW

    Bangistan – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Two individuals are brainwashed by their gurus into becoming suicide bombers, with their mission being that of blowing up a gathering of religious leaders from all over the globe. Their journey has several twists and turns.

REVIEW: The basic premise of Bangistan is interesting in itself. This quirky comedy tells you the simple story of two naive men, willing to go to any length for their respective faiths.

Action kick-starts in North and South Bangistan, a fictitious but beauteous land where opposing faiths, the Muslims and the Hindus, have their headquarters. A voice over informs you in a tongue-in-cheek fashion that bombs go off here at the least provocation, hence the place is aptly named Bangistan.

Hafeez (Riteish) works in a BPO and speaks chaste English with an American accent (hilarious). On the South side of this mountain town is Praveen(Pulkit), who is the Hanuman of the local Ram-Lila. Both Hafeez and Praveen are impressionable so their sects choose them for a special mission. They are told that to show reverence to Allah and Bhagwan, they must destroy people from the opposite faiths. When the opportunity to accomplish their objective, albeit without raising any suspicion, presents itself at a religious conference scheduled in Poland, the men set off of on their journey. They prepare for D-day at Wilfred’s rooming house in Krakow. Lodged one floor above the other, the simpletons discover that they more inclined to be friends than foes. And that’s where their moral dilemma actually starts. The charming bartender (Jaqueline) at the lodge is also someone the two of them take a shine to. Songs are sung and merriment is had, giving this satire the required light-hearted touch. The director, who wishes to depict the futility of war fought in the name of God and religion, stays on track. Despite the dry choice of subject, Bangistan makes valiant attempts to keep the humour alive during its two-hour running time.

The characters of Riteish and Pulkit, who do not have a single mean bone in their bodies, are convincing as the Dumb and Dumber combo; blundering bumpkins who are a misfit on a terror journey.

  • Salman, Akshay & Amitabh Bachchan – Among the Worlds top 10 Highest Paid Actors: Forbes

Salman, Akshay & Amitabh Bachchan – Among the Worlds top 10 Highest Paid Actors: Forbes

Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar – are among the top 10 highest paid actors in the World, outranking many Hollywood A-listers.

The rankings, compiled by Forbes, were released last week and included actors working outside Hollywood, allowing an international comparison of star earnings for the first time. A clear sign of the globalization; even in the film business where outsourcing is catching up with the rest of the Industries.

Bollywood superstars Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9 in the top 10 this year. Robert Downey Jr (a.k.a Iron Man) is the world’s highest-paid actor for the third year in a row.

Bollywood superstars rank ahead of Mark Wahlberg at No. 10 ($32 million), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at No. 11 ($31.5 million) and Johnny Depp at No. 12 ($30 million), for instance.

“I am surprised it has taken so long” to get global rankings, said Bollywood publicist Raju Kariya, who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years. India’s male actors, easily recognizable by their aviator sunglasses and tight designer clothes, are so popular that “everyone from 5-year-olds to elderly aunties are completely gaga over them.”

“From Hollywood to Hong Kong and Bollywood, the ranking examines international stars’ earnings for the first truly global dollar tally of film’s flushest stars,” Forbes writer Natalie Robehmed says in the article.

“Though we have long looked at foreign actors starring in the U.S. films — Irishman Liam Neeson, Brit Daniel Craig and Australian Hugh Jackman have all made the Highest-Paid Actors list previously — we have never examined those working solely in international movie industries.”

Altogether, the five Bollywood stars — Shah Rukh Khan, in 18th place, and Ranbir Kapoor, at No. 30 — made Indians the second-highest paid as a group, with combined earnings of $140.5 million.

  • REAL ‘BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN’ STORY TAKES CURIOUS TURN

REAL ‘BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN’ STORY TAKES CURIOUS TURN

CHANDIGARH (TIP): As if straight out of the script of the recent tinsel town flick “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, the real life story of a speech and hearing disabled Indian girl Geeta, who got separated from her parents after straying into Pakistan 14-years ago, has taken a curious turn.

Amid efforts to locate the parents of the girl in India following the assurance by Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, a couple in Amritsar have come forward to claim that Geeta is their lost daughter. The couple, living in a slum-dwelling unit near Rigo bridge in the city, too are speech and hearing impaired and earn a living picking rag and seeking alms. What has made the developments even more curious is that Geeta has denied that the couple are her parents after she saw them on television. The migrant couple, Rajesh Kumar and Ram Dulari, who communicate through their son Raju, 14, say her real name is not Geeta but Pooja. The couple say they migrated from Bihar to Punjab in search of work about two decades ago. Ever since she strayed into Pakistan at a tender age of about four, Geeta has lived under the support and patronage of Edhi Foundation in Karachi. She communicates in sign language, but can read and write Hindi. Geeta has high resemblance with “her mother” Ram Durali.

The couple said they lost their daughter when she was small and did not have the wherewithal to locate her. A private TV channel contacted Edhi Foundation in Pakistan to see if the claim by the Indian couple is true. Geeta, through her interpreter in Karachi, has said that she did not recognise them as her parents. She said her parents were not from Bihar, instead from Jharkhand, and her mother wore sarees not Punjabi suits as she was shown on the television. The family in Amritsar claims Pooja alias Geeta use to beg at the railway station and must have accidentally boarded the peace train that goes to Pakistan from the Attari border in Punjab.

Indian envoy in Pakistan, Dr TCA Raghavan has already visited Edhi Foundation and met Geeta there. An assurance has been given by the Indian authorities to locate the parents of the girl expeditiously.

Isha is returning to Hindi films four years after “Shabri” with a revenge drama “Assi Nabbe Pure Sau”.

At an event to showcase the first look of the film, Isha was asked who she wanted to make a biopic on. To that, she said: “I haven’t exactly thought about it. Masaan | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Masaan, a desolate place, follows two heart-breaking tales; that of Devi whose life is condemned after she is caught in the act. And that of a lower-caste boy Deepak, who falls in love with an upper-caste girl. Will Devi and Deepak respectively find the rainbow at the end of the tunnel?

CAST: Richa Chadda, Sanjay Mishra, Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi
    DIRECTION: Neeraj Ghaywan
    DURATION: 1 hour 49 minutes

REVIEW: It is in Banaras where Sanskrit Pandit(Sanjay Mishra) and his student-daughter, Devi(Richa) lead an innocuous existence. Richa’s curiosity to know more about the bees and the birds has her checking into a seedy lodge for a rendezvous with college friend Piyush Agarwal (Saurabh Chaudhary). However, their sexapade ends abruptly because a badass cop (Bhagwan Tiwari) raids the place and blackmails them.

Fear of notoriety forces Piyush to seek an easy way out. However, Devi and her father are hapless victims. The parallel track shows Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), a youngster from the untouchable Dom caste. Though he’s a super-bright student, he can’t help feeling marginalised because like his father and elder brother, he too is forced to work on the Ghats of the Ganges, burning funeral pyres. Deepak’s world lights up when he falls for Shaalu (Shweta Tripathi). This couple steal passionate kisses below the Peepal tree and though they fear that the caste-system could divide them; they nurse starry-eyed dreams.

Masaan, an Indo-French collaboration that won accolades at Cannes earlier on in May, has adept story-telling by Neeraj Ghaywan, a Anurag Kashyap alumni. The film unspools in an unhurried manner, occasionally tugging hard at your heartstrings. The urgency with which youngsters from India’s heartland feel the need to discover Facebook, forbidden fruit and freedom has been captured well.

The performances of the entire cast including that of the child actor Nikhil Sahni are praiseworthy. Masaan has pure desi magic woven in.

“Khushiyan” Maker Tirlok Malik’s “On Golden Years” Receives Viewers’ Acclaim

    [vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”nivo” interval=”3″ images=”44533,44534,44535,44536,44537,44538,44540,44541,44542″ onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” title=”On Golden Years” img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

FALLS CHURCH, VA (TIP): Human beings in all ages and climes grapple with situations and often face queer dilemmas. Aruba faced a dilemma whether or not he should fight against his kith and kin. Hamlet faced a dilemma: “To be or not to be’. And, in our own times, Indians living abroad also face a set of dilemmas. New York Emmy Award nominated filmmaker Tirlok Malik has focused on the set of dilemmas faced by Indian Americans in his film ‘On Golden Years’ which was premiered here at DC Cinemas, July 19.

Malik, widely regarded as the pioneer of independent cinema and of movies which portray the Indian-American immigrant experience, was elated with the response for the event. Over 300 eminent members of the Indian and larger South Asian community flocked to the Loehmann’s Plaza on a sweltering Sunday, typical for July.

Fortunately, the film was like a breath of fresh air focusing on an issue that one seldom, if at all, sees on celluloid: the lives of Indian-Americans post-retirement, their emotional highs and lows!

Categorized as a romantic comedy, the 85-minute film, in English, was shot at the Shantiniketan Ashram, a sprawling and scenic retirement residence in Tavares, Florida, which currently houses 174 condominiums. The visuals of the complex are stunning and the camera masterfully dwells on the awe-inspiring landscape and the aesthetically pleasing architecture.

‘On Golden Years’ is written and directed by Malik and produced by Iggy Ignatius. The talented cast members, based primarily in New York, include Ranjit Chowdhry, Jyoti Singh, Noor Naghmi, Reeves Lehmann, Shetal Shah, Professor Indrajit Singh Saluja, Lovllien Kaurr, Indu Gajwani, Shruti Tewari, Farokh Daruwala, Kamlesh Gupta and Sandeep Suri. The film also stars Malik who dons many caps as an actor, writer, director, producer, speaker and entrepreneur – he is the CEO of Apple Productions, Inc., and has recently launched a web-sitewww.nritvfilmclub.com for streaming Indian-American movies and promoting new talent.

Speaking to journalists, prior to the screening, about the purpose of the film, Malik explained, “When we come to America, we tend to think that when the time comes to retire, we will go back to India. But, the reality is we can’t and don’t go back. The film imparts the message: live your golden years without any regret”.

He noted, “We have a lot of issues: India versus America, contentedness versus regrets. This film deals with those issues while encouraging everyone to live life to the fullest”.

Malik told us, “All my films have revolved around NRI (Non-Resident Indian) conflicts. We all have conflicts when we migrate. My first film was ‘Lonely in America’ (1992) which spoke about how we can accept the American dream, but have a difficult time accepting the culture”. His second film, in the same trilogy, was Khushiyaan (2011) about “how we leave our aging parents behind in India and come to America, and one day learn of their death. ‘On Golden Years’ is about the retirement of the American dream”, he said. “So, all my films deal with that emotional conflict of being Indian-American”.

He concurred when we pointed out that the wheel has come full circle from ‘Lonely in America’ to ‘On Golden Years’.

To his immense credit, Malik has nurtured promising artistes. “I have always given a chance to new talent”, he told us. “My whole focus has been on creating the NRI world, basically”, he said.

Noor Naghmi, who plays a prominent part in the film, has extensive experience in theater, radio, television, and on celluloid. “I have done anything which pays”, he quips.

Onscreen, he played the role of Shyam who is very lonely after his beloved wife’s death. “He is a very romantic character and that’s the reason I loved the role”, Naghmi told us.

Perhaps the most poignant scene in the film is between Shyam and his deceased wife, Anita (Shruti Tewari), in which she gently encourages him to move on with his life.

We asked Naghmi, What was it like working with Tirlok Malik? He replied, “As a director, he is very stern which is good. At the same time, he does allow improvisation. That is good for me because I am a method actor. I like to create and improvise”.

He gushed, “The whole experience I had working with him and the entire team was amazing! For 30 days, we were like family living together. We were working and having fun”, sans any stress or pressure.

Actress Jyoti Singh was initially skeptical about playing a character considerably older than her, and concerned that she maybe typecast in such roles. Once she set her reservations aside and accepted the part, it was all about delivering her best and bonding with the team!

“I am thankful to Mr. Malik for giving me the opportunity to act in the film which has drama, comedy, love, life”, she told us. “I especially like the way he directs and we all work in a professional environment”. About the cast and crew, she said, “We lived at Shantiniketan and shared some wonderful moments during the making of the film”.

Jyoti admitted she was “extremely nervous” at first about being paired with the immensely talented actor Ranjit Chowdhry, who also played the lead in ‘Lonely in America’ and prominent parts in Indian comedy classics such as Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Baton Baton Mein’ (1979) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Khubsoorat’ (1980). Fortunately, he put her at ease with his great sense of humor.

Professor Indrajit Singh Saluja plays the role of a jovial Sikh senior who loves his wife (Lovllien Kaurr). He “is fiercely proud of his Indian roots and takes pride in the country of his birth”, he told us.

“The point that has been made through my character is: “You may take an Indian out of India, but you cannot take India out of an Indian”, he said.

About Malik, Reeves Lehmann declared, “he is my favorite director”!

Speaking to us at the film’s premiere, Lehmann said, “I am very excited about the event here. I had a fabulous time working with the rest of the cast. It was a wonderful experience”.

In the film, he plays the role of Jacob, “a retired civil rights attorney married to this beautiful Indian woman (Shetal Shah) and we have the best relationship”, he said. “We just enjoy being with each other throughout the film”.

Interestingly, Lehmann is Chairman of the Film Division at the renowned School of Visual Arts (SVA), in New York, and among his students was Indian actor Ranbir Kapoor.

We discovered that Iggy Ignatius is one-of-a-kind: film producer; entrepreneur — he owns Shantiniketan; actor – he has a cameo in ‘On Golden Years’; discerning author – the film is inspired by his book, ‘Seeking Roots’, which he wrote in 2008 prior to the establishment of the retirement residence. “At that time, it was a total fiction about how life would be in Shantiniketan”, he says, about the book. It was a vision which bore fruition!

We asked him what motivated him to get involved with the film. “Basically, this concept of togetherness after retirement” which the film conveys, he replied. “Based on current life expectancy rates, people live 20-30 years after retirement. They lead a good life, they have money. You have to discover each other, not brood over children all the time”, he reasoned.

Ignatius appeared fascinated by an episode of Oprah Winfrey’s television show which featured Pastor Rob Bell and his wife Kristen who co-wrote a compelling book, ‘Zimzum of Love’, about the deeper mysteries of marriage. Zimzum is a Hebrew word that represents the space God created outside of Himself in order to make room for the Universe. The authors believe both partners should make a conscious decision to create space outside of themselves in order to make room for the other and to prioritize their life together. “In retrospect, ‘On Golden Years’ is about reliving the Zimzum”, Ignatius said.

Noor Naghmi was the gracious host of the film’s premiere here. On hand, at the event were: Mr. Shiv Ratan, Counsul, Community Affairs at the Indian Embassy; Nadeem Hotiani, Press Attache at the Pakistan Embassy, renowned ghazal and Sufi singer Mrs. Vatsala Mehra; renowned Pakistan film star Reema Khan, famous Pakistan TV Star Bindiya, independent filmmaker Manan Singh Katohora; Pushpa Agnihotri, All India Radio, Delhi, Yasmin and Abul Hasan Naghmi, founders of Society of Urdu Literature, USA, Dr. Tariq Shahab, Manoj and Geeta Singh, organizers of the DC South Asian Film Festival coming up September 25-27. West Virginia based eminent eye Surgeon Dr. V. K. Raju hastened from India where he had gone to deliver Nani Palkhiwala Memorial lecture at Chennai, to be at the premier.

Indian and Pakistani media were present in strength. Lalit Jha from Press Trust of India (PTI), Arun Kumar from Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) and Walker Syed from EYE 95 America were among those present.

The sponsors who generously supported the event included EYE 95 Television Network (Grand sponsor), Dr. Farida Khattak, DDS Dynamic Family Dentistry Noor Naghmi New York Life, SAI Mortgage , KEY Title, Nirala Sweets, Jyoti Gujral, NRI TV Film Club, Society of Urdu Literature (SOUL) , Golden Key Realty, The Indian Panorama, and Shalimar House, a retirement community.

Dr. Zulfiquar Kazmi did a wonderful job as the master of ceremonies.

It is learnt that requests are pouring in from various parts of USA to screen the film and there are plans to screen the film in a couple of cities across U.S. in the next few months. So, watch out for the screening in your city.

According to a report on Mid-day.com, the film’s production team had initially decided to shoot the bow-and -arrow scenes with a professional archer and merge them with Deepika’s close-up shots. • I love NY | MOVIE REVIEW

I love NY | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Chicago guy Randhir Singh (Sunny Deol) is commitment phobic. New York girl Tiku Verma (Kangana Ranaut) doesn’t believe that she can be happy. Fate brings the two together, challenging the perception they hold about themselves.

REVIEW: Since Tiku’s parents are no more, loneliness gets to her and makes her settle with Ishaan, her wannabe Anglicised douchebag boyfriend. He is high-handed, unreasonable and disrespects her but she makes a compromise, hoping to feel loved and wanted.

Incidentally, on New Year’s Eve as she returns to her apartment, she finds a drunk stranger (Randhir) in her bed! Apparently, Randhir who is all set to marry girlfriend Riya (Tannishtha Chatterjee) after being single for the longest time, gets drunk and accidentally boards the flight to NY.

This hard to believe story gets weirder when his building, flat number in Chicago and even house keys match the ones of Kangana. Terribly Hungover, he enters her house thinking it’s his own and that jeopardises Tiku’s relationship with Ishaan. Randhir tries to mend things but things only escalate further.

The plot tries to touch upon the thought that how one can find solace in the company of complete strangers, who at times end up understanding you more than your loved ones. Randhir and Tiku’s chance encounter, strange bond and mutual admiration which finally culminates into friendship and love is bizarre yet believable.

Kangana is delightful to watch. She did this film before Queen happened, proving she always had it in her. What a performer she is turning out to be. Your heart goes out to her when she tells Randhir “Ishaan pe mat jao, Baaki log meri kaafi izzat karte hai’. Sensible, real, funny…she is your quintessential girl-next-door.

Sunny Deol looks odd for the role he’s cast in but delivers an earnest performance, which helps him sail through.

It’s a pity that certain multiplexes cancelled shows of this film, owing to low occupancy for its actually a decent romcom that you won’t mind watching once. And it doesn’t look stale either.

On a lighter Side: Canadian man sings ‘Tum Hi Ho’ for his Sikh bride

Weddings are very special and this Christian wedding has gone viral on social media for a very different reason. Frank Gregoire, The Groom, a Canadian, struck a special note –by singing the popular Hindi song ‘Tum Hi Ho’ for his Indian-origin bride to tell her how he loved her in a very unique way as part of the vows.

The video of Gregoire humming the Bollywood song from the love story ‘Aashiqui 2’ to impress his Sikh bride has gone viral on social media.  Arijit Singh’s original song is a cult romantic song which featured in the Bollywood blockbuster movie ‘Aashiqui 2’.

Simran Malhotra, the bride, was initially taken aback as she realised her soon-to-be husband was singing a Hindi song. She eventually started crying, seemingly with tears of happiness.

Frank Gregoire reportedly took six weeks to learn the famous song which he performed on their wedding day.

Not unlike the song and its singer, the wedding looks like it was a concoction of western-Indian traditions. Simran was seen wearing traditional bangles with a white gown and has even applied henna on her hands, commonly applied by brides in India.

The award-winning song was sung by Arijit Singh, a Bengali playback singer, and is a cult romantic song which featured in the Bollywood blockbuster movie ‘Aashiqui 2’.

  • ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ to release in Pakistan this Eid

‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ to release in Pakistan this Eid

Salman Khan’s “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” has become the first film revolving around the Indo-Pak theme to get a clearance for a screening in Pakistan this Eid.

The Pakistan Central Censor Board has given a go ahead to the Kabir Khan-directed movie, about an Indian man’s attempt to help a young, speech-impaired girl from Pakistan return to her homeland with some cuts.

Bollywood films revolving around Indo-Pak themes face trouble when it comes to their release in the country and recently Salman’s “Ek Tha Tiger”, Saif Ali Khan’s “Agent Vinod”, “Haider”, “Baby” and “Tere Bin Laden” failed to get a release in Pakistan.

The Chairman of the Central Board of Film Censors Mobashir Hasan said that “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” has been approved for Eid release by the CBFC but with several cuts.

“We recommended these cuts after thorough discussion by our panel which comprises members of natural security agencies, film critics and members of the civil society.”

Hasan revealed that since the CBFC is a regulatory body, determining the time of release of a film doesn’t fall within its jurisdiction, but that it has “approved” the movie for Eid.

He said that so far, the Board has not gotten any instructions from the Information Ministry for the film’s release to be delayed or restricted.

Satish Anand, the chief executive of Eveready Pictures, played down reports that the Lahore censor board still had not given clearance for the exhibition of the film in Punjab.

Nadeem Mandviwalla, a well known distributor and exhibitor, told PTI that the CBFC doesn’t hold the power to censor the film across Pakistan after the passing of the 18th Amendment and subsequent decentralization of censor boards. He said presently, all the cinemas in the Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakthunkhawa province and cantonments around the country come within the CBFC’s ambit.

Mandviwalla played down media reports that the Pakistani film industry personalities were pressuring the government to delay the release of “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” as some major Pakistani films were slated for release at Eid as well.
The two big Pakistani releases include “Wrong No” and “Bin Roye,” and they are bound to face stiff competition with the Salman-starrer during the Eid holidays.

HUM films, which have produced “Bin Roye,” are said to be keen to have no international competition at Eid. “Bin Roye” is the second film appearance for the popular Mahira Khan, who is making her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in “Raees.”
After a premiere in Dubai, it will release in Indian theaters on Eid. Mahira and Fawad Khan have become popular faces in India thanks to the success of their serial “Humsafar.”

Salman Khan hit-and-run case hearing adjourned again!!! till July 20

The Bombay High Court adjourned the hearing on Salman Khan’s appeal till 20th july. The court deferred the July 1 hearing till July 13 but again adjourned it further.

An appeal has been filed by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan against the five-year sentence awarded to him in the hit-and-run case. Although the ‘paper book’ (compilation of evidence and documents) is ready and copies have been served to both the sides by the court), Salman’s counsel Amit Desai urged for three weeks’ adjournment to check whether the documents were in order. Justice A R Joshi, however, granted adjournment till July 13 to carry out the drill of checking documents.

Currently, the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor’s lawyers are busy preparing the case papers for the hit-an-run case.

Earlier the Bombay High Court while admitting Salman’s appeal against his conviction posted the matter for June 15, then to July 1 and then to July 13 before adjourning it again to July 20.

On May 6, a Sessions Court had announced a 5-year sentence in the long impending 2002-hit-and-run case in which Khan was involved. Two days after this, the actor, however, was granted bail on May 8 by the Bombay High court and his sentence was five-year long sentence was suspended.

Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Dilwale’ Vs. Salman Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’

Fans have spoken and the verdict is out – SRK-Kajol’s Dilwale is the most awaited film of this year. The film has received 53 percent of the total votes leaving behind Salman – Kareena‘s Bajrangi Bhaijaan with 24 percent votes.

Shahid-Alia’s Shaandaar raked in 7 percent votes while Ranbir-Deepika’s Tamasha came a close fourth with 5 percent votes.

The other films in this race got fewer votes probably because the makers have really guarded the look of their films so fans don’t really have an idea about what the film is all about!

Upcoming Releases : Salman Khan – Kareena Kapoor’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Akshay Kumar – Sidharth Malhotra’s Brothers, Alia Bhatt – Shahid Kapoor’s Shaandaar, Deepika Padukone – Ranveer Singh – Priyanka Chopra’s Bajirao Mastani and Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol’s Dilwale.

  • Second Hand Husband – MOVIE REVIEW

Second Hand Husband – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Duty manger at a five star hotel, Rajbir (Gippy Grewal) is in love with Gurpreet (Tina Ahuja), a lawyer. The two want to get married but that’s not possible until Rajbir’s divorce with his first wife Neha (Geeta Basra) comes through.

REVIEW: Neha asks for hefty alimony. Rajbir finds her demands unreasonable so starts looking for a guy, who could marry her and fulfil her wishes. His groom-hunting forms the story.

Meanwhile, Rajbir’s boss Ajit Singh (Dharmendra) is struggling to save his own marriage as wife Byant (Rati Agnihotri) is sick and tired of his drunk, womanising ways. Despite the lack of depth in terms of story or character building, Second Hand Marriage is fairly funny in portions, thanks to the antics of Dharmendra and a talented supporting cast comprising Vijay Raaz, Mukesh Tiwari, Ravi Kishan and Sanjay Mishra. Tiwari’s wisecracks and Raaz as a lovelorn inspector in particular, are hilarious.

Punjabi superstar Gippy, who debuts in Bollywood with this film seems overwhelmed by the seniors around. He seems comfortable playing second fiddle to Dharmendra. Govinda’s daughter Tina Ahuja too makes her debut here. She is confident, looks good but needs a meatier role to make her mark. Geeta Basra is pleasant in her new desi avatar. Harbhajan’s cameo towards the end works in the film’s favour as well.

If you do not expect comedy to be too clever, you won’t mind this old-school chaotic caper.
