    Movie Review: Alone

STORY: Sanjana is madly in love with Kabir. All she wants is his uninterrupted time. Trouble is, her conjoined twin Anjana also desires exactly the same.

REVIEW: So what happens when conjoined twins Anjana and Sanjana (Bipasha Basu) make the same man, Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) the object of their desire? No prizes for guessing. The sisters end up despising one another and can hardly wait to go their separate ways (pun intended).

Unaware of the undercurrent of this emotion, Kabir, an advertising executive, (who ironically isn’t shown doing a single day’s work in the film), is working his butt off in Mumbai to give his dear wife Sanjana a luxurious lifestyle. However, wifey-dear is perpetually miffed with him for not spending any time with her. Tut, tut.

The couple feels that their shift from Kerala to Mumbai is pointless if they cannot even spend quality time together. And even though her mother (Neena Gupta) resides there, Sanjana’s not keen on returning to Kerala because of some skeletons left behind.

When circumstances take this young couple to a sprawling mansion in God’ own country, the spook fest begins.

Inspired by a 2007 Thai film by the same name, this Bollywood adaptation depends too heavily on creaking doors and a shrieking Sanjana to send a chill down your spine. She, who sees ghosts in every nook and corner of her childhood home, psyches herself and her wide-eyed husband. From taking his wife to a spiritual healer to making out with her in the idyllic locales, Kabir does everything in his power to drive away her fears.

When Sanjana saunters into the outhouse where Anjana and she played in their childhood, she is possessed by Anjana’s spirit. Post interval, it’s the ghost’s turn to romance the hero with the chiselled physique. In fact, the ghost lucks out – unlike Sanjana in the first half, the ghost even shares raunchy scenes with Kabir. Till this point, Alone indulges you.

The lovemaking scenes between Bipasha and Karan are racy. The supernatural turn in the conflict between the sisters does give you goosebumps. But the limited expertise of director Bhushan Patel (1920, Evil Returns, Ragini MMS) and actress Bipasha Basu (Raaz, Creature 3D) – in spite of their many ventures in this genre -allows Alone to deliver only superficial chills. The prolonged climax though it is full of twists, leaves you cold because it is too contrived. When you scratch the surface, you don’t end up scared shitless. And isn’t that what Alone is meant to do?

BIPASHA: NO FILMS WITH KHANS YET, BUT SO WHAT

Actress Bipasha Basu has spent close to 15 years in the Hindi film industry, without working with any of the top Khans – be it Shah Rukh, Aamir or Salman. But she has no regrets whatsoever.

Bipasha, whose latest movie “Alone” released last week, said: “There are so many actresses who have done films with Khans and then disappeared. So what’s the point of such big films? The year I debuted (with ‘Ajnabee’ in 2001), ‘Lagaan’ released with Gracy Singh in lead. It was one of the iconic films…but I am still here,” she said.

The Bengali beauty has featured in Bollywood movies like “Raaz”, “Jism”, “No Entry”, “Dhoom 2”, “Apharan”, “Corporate”, “Race”, “Bachna Ae Haseeno”, “Raaz 3” and “Creature”. Having starred in multiple horror films, now she is looking at a comedy.

“I want to do a good comedy, not a slapstick comedy. People have not seen my funny side yet. I would like to do that,” she said.

Censor Board chief quits to protest film MSG ‘clearance’

NEW DELHI (TIP): Amidst reports that controversial film “Messenger of God” featuring Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in lead role has been cleared by Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), Censor Board chief Leela Samson on January 15 night said she has decided to resign.

Asked if she was aware of media reports that the nod has been given by FCAT to the film’s screening, Samson said “I hear so. Nothing in writing yet. It is a mockery of Central Board of Film Certification. My resignation is final. Have informed the (I&B) Secretary”.

There was, however, no official word on the decision, if any, of FCAT.

The Censor Board had referred the issue of clearance to “Messenger of God” to FCAT. The film was slated to hit the screens on Friday.

Asked why she has decided to quit, she did not specifically refer to the reported clearance to the film but said the reasons cited are alleged “interference, coercion and corruption of panel members and officers of the organization who are appointed by the ministry.”

According to Samson, “…having to manage an organization whose Board has not met for over nine months as the ministry had no funds to permit the meeting of members.”

She said the term of all the members and the Chairperson of the Censor Board “are over. But since the new government failed to appoint a new Board and Chairperson, a few were given extension and asked to carry on till the procedure was completed.”

“However, recent cases of interference in the working of the CBFC by the ministry, through an ‘additional charge’ CEO, and corrupt panel members has caused a degradation of those values that the members of this Board of CBFC and Chairperson stood for,” Samson alleged.

Meanwhile, a spokesman of Sirsa (Haryana)-based Dera Sacha Sauda said “as per our information, FCAT has cleared the movie for release. But a written order is awaited.”

    Govt denies interference
There was no coercion or interference from the government to give a “clearance” to controversial film “Messenger of God” featuring Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, junior minister in information and broadcasting ministry, said on January 16.

“This is her personal choice, the government has no comment on it,” Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore commented on resignation of Censor Board chief Leela Samson.

Rathore also said that if “Leela Samson is saying that there was coercion or interference from the government side, then she should give proof of it”.

“Censor Board and all its members were brought in by the last government, we haven’t brought in new members,” Rathore added.
Hinting that Leela Samson was not taking here role seriously, Rathore said that “my officers tell me that in last few months, she only attended office once”.

BIPASHA’S DUAL AVATAR OF GHOST & VICTIM

Alone, featuring Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover, is a horror love story that revolves around conjoined sisters. When one sister dies, she returns to seek revenge on the other.

One can say that Bipasha has an unusual role at hand, as she plays both— the ghost and the victim — in the film produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak, Abhishek Pathak, Pradeep Agarwal and Prashant Sharma. An official remake of the Thai blockbuster by the same name, the film has been made with a few changes to the original script. It has been adapted by Shantanu Ray and Sheershak Anand, with dialogues by Shagufta Rafique.

After 1920 – Evil Returns and Ragini MMS 2, this film marks director Bhushan Patel’s third horror venture. He says, “Alone is the scariest film I have made till date. I think Bipasha and Karan have done full justice to their roles.” Of course, the chemistry between the lead pair hasn’t gone unnoticed by the audience, thus adding to the curiosity around the movie. What makes it all the more intriguing is the fact that the film has been shot in the scenic locales of Kerala — an unusual setting for a horror story.

  • MOVIE REVIEW PK

    MOVIE REVIEW PK

Cast: Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh, Rajput, Saurabh Shukla, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani
    Direction: Rajkumar Hirani
    Genre: Drama
    Duration: 2 hours 33 minutes

Story: An alien lands on earth but loses his remote to go home. Does ‘PK’ return – and as he navigates the human world, what does he gain and lose?

Review: Arriving on earth, an alien (Aamir) is immediately robbed of the only thing he’s wearing, the remote via which he can go home. Knowing nothing of human ways, language, clothing or lies, the alien searches desperately for his remote, his antics bizarre enough for people to ask if he’s ‘pee kay’ or drunk. One day, ‘PK’ meets Jaggu (Anushka), a TV reporter who helps him. Can they find PK’s remote, now with god-man Tapasvi ji (Shukla)? And do PK and Jaggu also find love? PK is as much a philosophy as a film. It takes the ‘stranded alien’ theme, familiar from classics like ET, but tells the tale equally from the lonely alien’s eyes – at times, evoking the beautiful story The Little Prince – as from his human narrator’s. Starting with the alien’s desperation, PK captures the fears and falsehoods humans weave around faith. When PK decides to pray for his remote, he’s bewildered about whom to and how to pray. PK features brave scenes – money extracted at temples, coconuts offered in confusion at a church, godmen doling out tortuous advice – and strong lines, including a Muslim girl bravely asserting, “Itna chota nahin ho sakta hamara khuda, ki use hamare school jaane pe aitraaz ho.” Capturing faith whipped into hate, PK’s sterling message, directed sensitively, stands out. As does Aamir Khan as the wide-eyed alien bemused by human life, a paan-chomping Chaplin from outer space, liked by rustic Bhairon Singh (Sanjay Dutt in a warming cameo). PK’s simplicity contrasts with Jaggu’s complicated life, heartbroken after she thinks her Pakistani boyfriend Sarfaraz (Sushant) ditched her in chocolate-box Belgium. Tapasvi warned Jaggu’s father (Parikshet Sahani) that her Muslim lover would betray her – does PK prove him wrong? Anushka presents a sprightly show while Boman Irani stands out as a TV channel head. Some supporting acts and special effects could’ve been sharper though while at points, editor Raju Hirani should’ve been sterner with director Raju Hirani in trimming tighter scenes. Between gods, frauds, love and bombs, there are multiple threads here. Some distract, others impact, like PK hilariously dazed by humans hiding when they make out – except when they announce it with band-baaja on their wedding day.

  • Action Jackson

    Action Jackson

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam, Manasvi Mamgai
    Direction: Prabhudheva
    Genre: Action Comedy
    Duration: 2 hours 24 minutes

Story: A Don’s sister falls for his most trusted lieutenant. When he refuses to reciprocate, she vows to destroy him. Her lust and his scorn form the crux of this puerile potboiler.

Review: Welcome Vishy (Ajay), a self-styled Robin Hood, who picks up street fights with the local goons to earn himself some mega-bucks. He finds support from his chaat-eating sidekick Moosa (Kunaal Roy Kapur) who is more farcical than funny, part farce. Robin Hood’s life takes an amorous twist when he bumps into Khushi (Sonakshi), a ‘luckless’ media professional. If it is not corny enough to have the girl and the man’s names rhyming (Vishy and Khushi), things get completely illogical when the girl starts chasing the boy because she has spied on him semi-nude in her toilet break.

This film writer’s imagination is warped because Khushi is actually convinced that the hero’s half-naked presence is responsible for her changing fortunes. Want to tear your hair out in frustration? Wait, there’s more to add to this convoluted screenplay. Joining the confusion is one-glass-eyed don Xavier Fonseca (Anand Raj), who resides in Bangkok and deals in arms. His sexy sister Marina (Manasvi) falls in lust with her brother’s trusted associate AJ(can’t reveal his name, without giving away the suspense). Though Marina has the best car, clothes and cigarettes, she cannot canoodle with AJ because his heart lies with another pretty damsel Anusha (Yami).

Since hell hath no fury than a Marina scorned, the plot reigns mayhem as it moves from Pune to New Zealand, Bangkok to Austria and finally, to Mumbai with the hero being chased. Corrupt cops and identical twins tumble out of cupboards adding to the confusion. The action sequences have Tarantino’s Kill Bill influence. However, here the animation wipes jump out of nowhere almost startling you. Ajay romancing the sword in his bare-bodied avatar is exciting.

He pulls off the comic and the Bazooka killing-machine acts with ease. Sonakshi shimmies well to Himesh Reshammiya’s hit ditties — Keeda and Chichora Piya with Ajay, who tries to do better than stomp. Manasvi shows her shapely body in a bootylicious gangster song, while Yami charms with her girl next-door act. If you’re not looking for a mentally stimulating fare, enjoy this ride that is basically meant for the filmi keedas.

This time around, the actress has taken up another cause of protecting elephants in the wild. Jacqueline has joined the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society that works towards protecting elephants in the wild.

Talking about the endeavour of the society, Jacqueline says, “I believe strongly in spreading awareness and educating not only the inhabitants of the village but also the general public of the need to conserve the elephant in the wild. We don’t realize how difficult it is for people in remote villages to balance a sustainable livelihood, but what we also don’t realize is that through decades of development, humans have encroached on elephant habitats and made their livelihoods in these habitats. This has made it difficult for elephants to find new habitats because the fact is there is no new land to move into.”

  • Ungli

    Ungli

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Sanjay Dutt, Kangana Ranuat, Angad Bedi, Neil Bhoopalam, Neha Dhupia
    Direction: Rensil D’ Silva
    Genre: Drama
    Duration: 1 hour 54 minutes

Story: Four friends turn into vigilantes to clean up corruption and crime in the country.

Review: This story has its heart in the right place, mind all over the place, and finger on the wrong pulse. ‘Ungli’ is socially relevant, earnest in delivering a strong message, albeit, the weak execution doesn’t support the larger intent. Abhay (Randeep) a crime journalist, Maya (Kangana) a medical intern, Goti (Neil) a computer hardware expert, and Kalim (Angad) a garage owner – are four buddies so enraged with our corrupt system that they show law-makers the middle finger and then take law into their own hands. Here’s the back story. Their buddy was beaten up by a powerful man’s son; the victim went into coma and justice was denied.

From there team ‘Ungli’ is born. The fearless foursome dressed in black face masks, hoods and headlights set out to punish and shame (they’re valiant, not violent) unscrupulous cops, rickshaw drivers, RTO officers and government babus. Television channels are sent recordings of their operations, and soon they become darlins’ of the aam junta and sansani khabar for the media. Their plans are simple and too smooth – therein lies the problem. Enter ACP Kale (Dutt) who’s given the task of tracking down the cool criminals. Enter bindaas cop with a bad boy image, Nikhil (Emraan), who is hired by ACP to crack the case.

At this point, an item number (by Shraddha Kapoor) also makes a forced entry. Soon, a fistful of predictable twists and turns also enter – which do nothing to turn around the story into anything out of the ordinary. Rensil D’Silva’s plot is fast-paced, in spite of the many potholes it slips into. He strings the story like episodes, never allowing the drama to intensify. The outlaws have a motive, but their plans are way too improbable and flaky. There’s a fleeting romance thrown in too and attacks of laughable dialogue.

The performances are average – Kangana looks too bored for revenge, Emraan is unenthused and under-utilized, salt ‘n’ pepper Dutt tries some heavy dialogue but leaves no impact. Randeep looks believable and delivers a fine act and Neha (playing his colleague and love interest) does her part well.
