Actors gossip more than actresses: Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha Kapoor has repeatedly been pitched against the likes of Alia Bhatt and Parineeti Chopra but looks like the actresses share a great bond.

So, who between the two is the toughest competitor for Shraddha? “Actually we are a trio; our names are taken in the same breath. There is definitely healthy competition between us. Both, Alia and Parineeti are amazing actors and both are very different actors. The best part is that we are constantly working and have movies in hand, we are busy, so nothing to complain about,” says Shraddha.

She, in fact, thinks that actresses hardly indulge in catfights and in lighter vein, even added how the scanner should be put on their male counterparts when told that the men in Bollywood are not heard complimenting each other the same way as the actresses. Shraddha immediately reacts, “Why do they say that girls gossip? Boys gossip more than girls. Just because there is a term coined catfights, the blame is put on the girls. In fact, boys are more chugli khors and they do it secretly. Actors gossip more than actresses, they are more curious than girls. The only difference is that the boys do it secretly,” she said.

Deliver Us From Evil | Movie Review

Cast: Eric Bana, Édgar Ramírez, Olivia Munn, Sean Harris, Joel McHale
    Direction: Scott Derrickson
    Genre: Horror
    Duration: 1 hour 58 minutes

Story: Two police officers from the Bronx, Sarchie (Bana) along with his partner Butler (McHale), investigate the latest in a series of gruesome incidents. Despite being witness to the worst that humanity has to offer in terms of crime, they realize that this particular case has some seriously sinister undertones.

Review: It would take a lot to truly shock officer Sarchie, who has nerves of steel and would not think twice about putting his own life on the line when it comes to doing his duty as a cop. Sarchie and his equally adept partner Butler receive a call one night to investigate an incident at the Bronx Zoo.

The case seems like something not too far removed from the kind of issues they usually handle on an almost day-to-day basis, but soon, more gruesome details come to light. A woman visiting the zoo suddenly and inexplicably kills her baby. When they question her, she mouths strange curses in Latin and sounds far beyond deranged.

A rather unconventional whisky-swilling priest named Mendoza (Ramirez), who also looks like he has been to hell and back, meets Sarchie and tries to tell him the woman is demonically possessed. However, she is actually the victim of an individual who is literally a conduit to hell.

Derrickson (who has also directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister) throws in pretty much everything you’d expect from this genre – an elaborate exorcism, mutilated corpses, sinister signs and so on. Sarchie’s wife Jen (Munn) might not have much screen time, but she portrays her role effectively.

While it isn’t in the league of, say, Insidious or The Ring, Deliver Us From Evil packs in a mixed bag of thrills that is, at times, deeply disturbing by virtue of using the kind of horror tropes that are more psychological than gory.
Rather than being a gore fest throughout, the film is more about an examination of the protagonist’s faith in God as well as how he deals with the guilt of past sins that he has not confessed.

  • SHRADDHA KAPOOR SHOWERED WITH PRAISES FOR SINGING ‘DO JAHAAN’

SHRADDHA KAPOOR SHOWERED WITH PRAISES FOR SINGING ‘DO JAHAAN’

Shraddha Kapoor is an actress with back to back hits to her credit but she is extremely new in the music world.

Besides her acting abilities, people are also talking about her singing abilities thanks to her second musical outing.

Sharddha made her singing debut with the unplugged version of the song ‘Galliyan’ in Ek Villain. And now she has taken her singing career further by crooning ‘Do Jahaan’ for her upcoming film Haider.

The actress has sung both songs with renowned singers. While she shared audio space with Ankit Tiwari in the unplugged version of ‘Galliyan’, she sang ‘Do Jahan’ with veteran singer Suresh Wadkar.

While ‘Galliyan’ is a love ballad, ‘Do Jahaan’ is a Kashmiri folk song. Shraddha has sung two completely different kinds of songs equally well.

The response Shraddha’s voice has received is phenomenal. She is overwhelmed by the positive feedback she has been receiving from all uarters for ‘Do Jahaan’.

Most importantly, the positive feedback and praise coming in from her co-singers Ankit Tiwari and Suresh Wadkar, who are themselves so phenomenal, gives the actress a different high.

    MOVIE REVIEW

Cast: Rannvijay Singh, Anindita Nayar, Salil Acharya, Kavin Dave
    Direction: Vishal S Mahadkar
    Genre: Horror
    Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes

Story: After the mysterious death of his girlfriend at the haunted Rudra Mills, a reality TV host and his friends venture into the forbidden land to determine whether ghosts exist. To gather proof, they plan to capture the supposed paranormal activities on camera. Do they survive?

Review: Going by the title, the film also enlightens those who’ve unheard of 3 A.M being the ‘devil’s hour’, where ghosts are thought to be at their most powerful. Can Sunny (Rannvijay Singh) and his friends (Salil Acharya, Kavin Dave) manage to decode the mystery surrounding the mills during this ungodly hour?

3 A.M borrows from Paranormal Activity and Mirrors to a certain extent. That’s not an issue since most horror films lack originality. However, this film fails to match up to the scares and chills provided by its Hollywood predecessors, that make you go numb with fear. And lack of deadly silence is a major reason behind the failure of the premise, which otherwise had potential.

A good horror film is atmospheric and this one falls flat here. You want the actors to ‘stop talking’ for a while but that doesn’t happen till the end. They constantly engage in silly banter, chatting or debating trivial issues, giving you headaches instead of fear.

No time or effort is invested to create the desired mood. Also, dialogues to the effect of, ‘Hum rudra ki aatma ko provoke karte hai’ do not work. Besides, a bizarre flashback at the most inappropriate moment ruins it.

About the cast, Rannvijay Singh looks good and his presence is the best part about the film. However, we wish he does something non-Roadies the next time on the big screen. Salil Acharya and Kavin Dave are decent in supporting roles.

3 A.M is a conversation-heavy horror film. If that doesn’t put you off, you can give it a shot. Else, watch Insidious or The Conjuring once again on DVD.

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, who is riding high on the success of ‘Khoobsurat’, says she will work with her Pakistani co-star Fawad Khan again.

Sonam, whose chemistry with Fawad in the remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1980 Khoobsurat has been appreciated, says she cannot wait to work with the actor again.

“People have loved our performances and also our chemistry in the movie. They are going crazy over the romance. Fawad and I are working together again for sure,” the actress told media.

The Raanjhanaa star said she is shocked at the audience’s response to Khoobsurat and now feels the film should have been released on a bigger scale. “We released it on 900 screens because we did not expect this kind of reaction. People thought this will be another ‘Aisha’ but they were surprised with the film. People have given a lot of love to our movie. They are praising me so much and I feel weird because I don’t think I have done something really great. It feels surreal,” Sonam said.

MOVIE REVIEW | Two Night Stand

Cast: Analeigh Tipton, Miles Teller, Jessica Szohr, Scott Mescudi, Levin Rambin
    Direction: Max Nichols
    Genre: Romantic Comedy
    Duration: 1 hour 23 minutes

Story: An online encounter between two singletons in New York leads to a one night stand. The morning after isn’t as sweet though and they have a mighty row. But thanks to a huge snowstorm, Megan (Tipton) is forced to stay put in Alec’s (Teller) apartment for a while and the two have no choice but to get better acquainted.

Review: Megan has been unlucky in love, and is newly single. Her roommate Faiza (Szohr) gets busy with her boyfriend one weekend with an extended lovemaking session and Megan has no option but to allow them their privacy. She decides that she’d fancy a bit of some no-strings-attached fun.

Somewhat emboldened after a few glasses of red wine, the plucky Megan settles down on her couch and logs on to a dating site with one purpose in mind – to look for a prospective date who will not creep her out, for a one night stand. Her search is surprisingly quick and she comes across the profile of someone who catches her fancy. Casual banter leads to a video chat and she makes a snap decision to head on over to his apartment.

The awkwardness of the next day quickly degenerates into an argument as Megan feels slighted by something that Alec said upon waking up. He passes a remark which she thinks is a comment on her morals. And just as she leaves in a huff, hoping never to see him again, nature intervenes. Because of the massive snowstorm, nobody can venture outdoors and they’re stuck with one another.

Two Night Stand has the vibe of a reality show and the feel of a play, where most of the action takes place in Alec’s cozy apartment, in two or three rooms. Teller and Tipton both put in some charming performances. Their delightful repartee is quite clearly the movie’s strongest aspect. It keeps you engaged and is often amusing. While the plot is simple enough, this is, in essence, a pretty candid and contemporary take on young love, with its many colourful details.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY NOT SCARED OF AGEING

Actress Keira Knightley says she isn’t scared of getting older as her “early twenties were not much fun”.

In an interview with Glamour magazine, the 29-year-old shared her views about ageing and said she was looking forward to her next big birthday,” reports dailymail.co.uk.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star will turn 30 March 26.

“I’m not actually worried about turning 30 Because, honestly, my early twenties were not much fun. Then after 25, things just got better and better,” she said.

“Maybe you stop caring as much about where you should be going and what other people think – which is all the s**t that makes you very unhappy early on,” she added.

The actress, who got married to Klaxons rocker James Righton May 2013, also admitted that being married doesn’t make her feel grown-up.

“Actually, I feel less grown-up as I go along. I reached my peak of grown-up behaviour at 20 and 21, and it’s been downhill since then,” she said.

“I was terribly sensible as a teenager but I’ve got far less so as I’ve grown up, which has been a huge relief for everyone -including my parents,” she added.

  • India Joins the Space Elite with Successful Mars Mission

India Joins the Space Elite with Successful Mars Mission

BENGALURU (TIP): “We have gone beyond the boundaries of human enterprise and innovation,” an exultant Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, standing alongside Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientists at the command center in the southern tech hub of Bangalore. “We have navigated our craft through a route known to very few.” India is the first country to reach Mars’ orbit on a maiden venture and the first Asian country to launch a successful Mars mission, all with a much cheaper price tag than any Mars mission before it.

India now joins an elite club of nations who have successfully carried out interplanetary space missions, and has scored a significant point in its rivalry with China. The Mangalyaan satellite was confirmed to be in orbit shortly after 0800, Indian time., September 24 . It is, without doubt, a considerable achievement. This is a mission that has been budgeted at 4.5bn rupees ($74m), which, by Western standards, is staggeringly cheap. The American Maven orbiter that arrived at the Red Planet on Monday is costing almost 10 times as much. Back in June, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi even quipped that India’s real-life Martian adventure was costing less than the make-believe Hollywood film Gravity. Even Bollywood sci-fi movies like Ra.One cost a good chunk of what it has taken to get Mangalyaan to Mars. So how has India done it? For sure, people costs are less in this populous nation, and the scientists and engineers working on any space mission are always the largest part of the ticket price. Home-grown components and technologies have also been prioritized over expensive foreign imports. But, in addition, India has been careful to do things simply.

“They’ve kept it small. The payload weighs only about 15kg. Compare that with the complexity in the payload in Maven and that will explain a lot about the cost,” says Britain’s Prof Andrew Coates, who will be a principal investigator on Europe’s Mars rover in 2018. “Of course, that reduced complexity suggests it won’t be as scientifically capable, but India has been smart in targeting some really important areas that will complement what others are doing.” Mangalyaan has gone equipped with an instrument that will try to measure methane in the atmosphere. This is one of the hottest topics in Mars research right now, following previous, tantalizing observations of the gas. Earth’s atmosphere contains billions of tons of methane, the vast majority of it coming from microbes, such as the organisms found in the digestive tracts of animals. The speculation has been that some methane-producing bugs, or methanogens, could perhaps exist on Mars if they lived underground, away from the planet’s harsh surface conditions. It is a fascinating prospect. So, even though Mangalyaan has a small payload, it will actually address some of the biggest questions at the Red Planet. Western scientists are excited also to have the Indian probe on station. Its measurements of other atmospheric components will dovetail very nicely with Maven and the observations being made by Europe’s Mars Express. “It means we’ll be getting three-point measurements, which is tremendous,” says Prof Coates. This will enable researchers to better understand how the planet lost the bulk of its atmosphere billions of years ago, and determine what sort of climate it could once have had, and whether or not it was conducive to life.

I have read a lot about the criticism of Mangalyaan and India’s space program. There’s an assumption among many, I guess, that space activity is somehow a plaything best left to wealthy industrial countries; that it can have no value to developing nations. The money would be better spent on healthcare and improved sanitation, so the argument goes. But what this position often overlooks is that investment in science and technology builds capability and capacity, and develops the sort of people who benefit the economy and society more widely. Space activity is also a wealth generator. Some of the stuff we do up there pays for stuff down here. The industrialized nations know it; that’s one of the reasons they invest so heavily in space activity. Consider just the UK. It has dramatically increased its spending on space in recent years.

The government has even identified satellites as being one of the “eight great technologies” that can help rebalance the UK economy and drive it forward. India wants a part of this action, too, and in Mangalyaan and its other satellite and rocket programs, the nation is putting itself into a strong position in international markets for space products and services. Commenting on the spectacular success of the Mars Mission, New York based attorney Ravi Batra said in a statement to The Indian Panorama: “India’s MOM’s success as the 1st nation to do so, and that too on a $74 million budget, speaks to India’s riches being in its people. PM Modi’s arrival in the United States for the GA and Pres. Obama now has a new credential – India’s people are smart and driven to touch the stars. Want to play together and build a better economy with Indian smarts?”

    MOVIE REVIEW | Daawat-e-Ishq

Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Parineeti Chopra, Anupam Kher,
    Karan Wahi
    Direction: Habib Faisal
    Duration: 2 hours

Story: Wafting flavours of love simmer via the bestknown route possible – stomach. The daawat looks good, but will it leave romantics with an unforgettable taste of love? Review: Statutory Warning: Do not watch this film on an empty stomach, lest the growling belly overpowers the sweet of this gastronomic love affair. Food is magical – it inspires love, lust, art, poetry, sex and of course, cinema. The master chef of this one, director Habib Faisal, whips up a story in the city of nawabs – over kitchen fires, kebabs, dough and the (socially relevant) dowry system. It’s a feast for the eyes, though there’s not as much for the heart to savour. Meet Hyderabad ki Gulrez (Parineeti), she’s feisty (a well-roasted temper), gutsy and likes propah angrezispeaking men. Sadly, her Booji (Kher) finds only dowryseeking spineless men who boast of shallow degrees from ‘IIM’ (International Institute of Mehboobnagar!). She works as a salesgirl in a shoe-store but dreams of being a shoe-designer. Along with Booji, she masterminds a con-plan to frame dowry-demanding dulhas and make big bucks to pursue her dream. But her plans get skewered when she meets Lucknow ka aashiq Tariq (Aditya), a chef and owner of the legendary restaurant ‘Haidari Kababs’. Gulrez gets drawn to the warm, inviting aromas of love while he woos her with botis, rotis and shahi tukdas of his heart. Habib Faisal’s offering is definitely fresher than a packaged, frozen meal; but when he’s not paying attention the story boils over and the flavour escapes quickly. The second half crumbles (guess some recipes got nixed here) and the climax is far from slurp-worthy. There are some ‘specials of the day’ like Booji’s goofiness during the con-act, and the line-up of dowryhungry men walking into the trap, but the characters are not as indulgent as the dishes. Parineeti displays ‘high-cal’ emotions once again, with her sweet Hyderabadi accent and superb confidence. Aditya charmingly shows flair with his Lucknowi style and ada. Their chemistry doesn’t simmer; it’s low-fat kulfi at best. Kher peppers it with a stand-out sorbet act. This one won’t fill your hungry hearts, but one serving (not too bland, not too spicy) isn’t too bad for your appetite.

    MOVIE REVIEW The Maze Runner

Cast: Dylan O’Brien, Aml Ameen, Thomas
Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, Blake
    Cooper, Ki Hong Lee
    Direction: Wes Ball
    Genre: Mystery
    Duration: 1 hour 54 minutes

Story: After erasing his memory, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) is mysteriously deposited to the Glade – a grassy field, surrounded by high walls of a gigantic maze, where a few other boys have been trapped too. Can the group escape the deadly maze? Review: Horrified by the situation and plagued by flashes of an unsettling dream, Thomas seeks answers from fellow prisoners, who are equally clueless. All they know is how every morning, the door to the maze opens, giving the best runners of the group an opportunity to map the ever-shifting labyrinth to find a way out. However, they must return before the gate closes, as spending the night inside would mean battling dangerous creatures called the Grievers. In spite of multiple attempts, no one has ever escaped the maze so far. Could Thomas be the key? Based on James Dashner’s popular young adult novels, this dystopian, post-apocalyptic thriller has the ability to make you feel claustrophobic, every time the runners squeeze themselves through the narrow pathways of the maze. A few of these fast-paced sequences are bound to leave you breathless with anxiety. Tense, dark and atmospheric, constant fear of the unknown grips you, keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout. While its ‘battle for survival in a controlled environment’ theme reminds you of ‘The Hunger Games’, this has its own twists and turns. The teen actors perform with utmost conviction and are impressively understated. Also, what sets this film apart is how the story focuses on human emotions as much as it does on special effects. You feel for the characters and their trauma. Ultimately, the plot provokes you to think if ‘being safe to suffer’ is better than ‘risking your life to look beyond the obvious’. It also convinces you to move out of your comfort zone and face your fear. The climax might seem underwhelming for some but the build-up is a sure-shot winner. • The Prince

    The Prince

Cast: Bruce Willis, John Cusack, Jason Patric, 50 Cent,
    Gia Mantegna, Jessica Lowndes
    Direction: Brian A Miller
    Genre: Action
    Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Story: Paul (Jason Patric) is a devoted dad who has left behind his life of crime. But he reprises his past combat experience as he, with some help from an old chum (Cusack), shoots his way through a trail of bad guys in the quest to locate and rescue his missing daughter Beth (Gia Mantegna). Along the way, Paul faces up his old gangster nemesis Omar (Bruce Willis).

Review: The Prince follows a fairly by-the-numbers plot of the angry dad (remember Liam Neeson in *Taken*?) who will break as many bones as necessary and let loose a hail of gunfire in order to bring his daughter to safety. Paul’s daughter seems a nice enough college-type girl, but as is always the case in movies like this, there’s more than meets the eye as regards her disappearance.

New Orleans forms the backdrop for this theatre of testosterone, where Paul and mob boss Omar are on a collision course. Paul used to be a mobster who is now on the mend. But he has to selectively bring to life some of his old skills in order to get the job done. The casting of this film would raise a few eyebrows. For starters, Willis just does not come across as convincing enough to be playing a bad guy; most of his memorable performances have him playing a good guy who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.

In fact, he looks bored in most scenes. We are made to believe that Paul is a ruthless, badass man-on-a-mission. And yet, his performance seems a bit forced, as if he is doing his best to convince you of his grit and determination. Whether this is part of his character sketch or not is uncertain, but Cusack just looks plain irritable for the most part. 50 Cent plays a drug lord aptly named The Pharmacist, presumably as a reference to the pills and powders his line of business involves. The greatest effort seems to have gone into getting the look of the fight scenes correctly in an otherwise bland film.

  • Mary Kom

    Mary Kom

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Sunil Thapa, Darshan Kumar
    Direction: Omung Kumar
    Genre: Biopic
    Duration: 2 hours 3 minutes

Story: A Manipur rice farmer’s daughter charts her own success story as a five-time world amateur boxing champion. She also does India proud when she bags the bronze in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Review: When adapted for the big screen, a biopic has to tread its own path. Debutant director Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom is based on the incidents in the life of MC Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra), India’s most high-profile female pugilist between the years 1991-2007.

The film has been shot for the better part in Imphal, Manipur, where the sportswoman was bred. Born in a humble home in Kangathei, Mary was only a teenager when she decided to pursue boxing, despite inviting her father’s ire. Literally starting with street brawls, Magnificent Mary, as she is nicknamed, blazes her path from ignominy to fame under the tutelage of her coach M. Narjit Singh (Sunil Thapa).

But wait, she also chooses to make way for matters of the heart, marriage and kids before coming back to winning global recognition again in 2008, 2010 and 2012. The filmmaker has captured her indefatigable spirit beautifully. He has also thrown light on the administration’s apathy towards sports and every time a film mirrors the red-tapism involved in the arena, you want to pick up the baton! Mary Kom is Bollywood’s answer to the Oscar-winner Million Dollar Baby (2004), where Hilary Swank plays an amateur boxing champ trained by Clint Eastwood. But the similarities are only because the protagonists in both films are female boxers.

The intention is definitely not to ape. One star in the rating is definitely reserved for Priyanka. She may not have transcended the physical attributes of the diminutive Mary in the actual sense (except adding a few obvious freckles to her face and slightly drooping eyelids), but she has brought the boxer to life convincingly enough, leaving you rooting for her, long after the end credits roll. Omung has a tight check on the proceedings postintermission. The emotional tracks between the boxer and her father (Robin Das), and Mary and her husband Onler (Darshan Kumar), leave you misty-eyed. But the main reason why Mary Kom appeals is because it doesn’t just give you a ringside view of boxing; it leaves you rooting for our sportsmen who have put India on the world map.
