    Ram-Leela

STORY: Boy and girl from warring factions love one another. Do they live happily ever after? REVIEW: What new can a filmmaker do with William Shakespeare’s classic love story Romeo and Juliet? The answer is, if you are Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is technically sound and artistically astute as far as art and craft go, you just become impudent, set the story in Gujarat, sign Bollywood’s currently best actress Deepika Padukone (Leela), team her up with `I’ve-got-fire-in-myloins’ actor Ranveer Singh (Ram) and then let them loose on one another.

So there’s the Sanada clan girl Leela who falls in love, or for the most part lust, with her enemy Ram, a Rajadi. Their clans have been at war for 500 years and the exaggeratedly trigger-happy lot that these turbanwearing folk have been portrayed as clearly underlines that no matter what one Ram or Leela feel, the rest of the clan only believe in mutiny. So bullets fly, blood flows and bahus become victims of evil design. In between this warfare, Deepika and Ranveer touch, feel, kiss and cuddle and ensure you can feel their stirring. Quite unabashedly, the filmmaker uses his lead pair’s real and reel chemistry, fuses it with sexual tension and makes it compelling for you to partake in their love-hate relationship.

For the most part, Ram-Leela, SLB’s most commercial work till date, has nice doses of raunch and ras (juice). Since the plot is Shakespearan, the maker has the arduous task of telling you this story on an opulent scale. Vintage palaces and daunting deserts are fitted in with precision, giving you truly awe moments. The music and picturisation of ‘Tattad tattad’, ‘Lahu munh lag gaya’ and ‘Nagada sang dhol’ enrich your cinematic experience. Deepika is breathtaking and in top form. Ranveer displays his six packs and histrionics with fair ease. This could be the start of his journey into superstardom. You have to also applaud Richa Chadda and Supriya Pathak Kapur for being the talent they are.

IS ALIA BHATT THE NEXT KAREENA KAPOOR?

Those who are close to Kareena Kapoor Khan know that the actress is blunt and very choosey when it comes to praising others. She also considers herself as the best in her field and feels that no one can be compared to her. However, if sources are to be believed the actress has taken a liking towards Alia Bhatt. A Mid-Day report says that Kareena is very fond of Alia and has been openly praising her. She feels that not only is Alia very talented but she has the same spunk and attitude that Kareena had when she joined the industry. The report quotes a source close to the senior actress and says that she feels Alia is her younger version and she will be the next Kareena. Apparently Alia is also very fond of Kareena and considers her a role model.

KATRINA SAYS PICS WITH RANBIR WAS OF A PRIVATE MOMENT

Actress Katrina Kaif, who was angry after her holiday pictures with “rumored” beau Ranbir Kapoor went viral in media, calls them “a private moment”. She had written a letter to the media afterwards and said she was upset, distressed and felt media invaded her privacy. “I saw the photos and reacted from heart at that moment. I was upset, hurt, angry. I feel it was a private moment (with Ranbir)…so privacy was expected,” Katrina said.

“The pictures were taken while I was on holiday by someone who, in an act of cowardice, has shot without permission and then used the pictures for commercial gain,” Katrina had written in the letter. In the pictures, she is seen in a bikini along with Ranbir at a beach in Spain. “Next time when you all plan to take pictures give me a notice. Red doesn’t look good with white (regarding the colour of her bikini)… I will wear matching next,” she added, on a lighter note. “Nothing like this happened in nine years. I felt it was done with a mean moment. What they (media) did was right and the way I reacted was also right as that time I was hurt,” Katrina said.

  • Pakistani court imposes restriction on screening of Indian movies

Pakistani court imposes restriction on screening of Indian movies

LAHORE (TIP): A Pakistani court on Tuesday imposed restrictions on the screening of Indian films across the country and laid down certain conditions for their release. Justice Khalid Mahmood of the Lahore high court issued the interim order in response to a petition filed by controversial TV talk show host Mubshir Lucman, a former film producer known for his anti-India stance.

Lucman claimed that under Pakistani rules, Indian movies that are shot completely in India and are sponsored by an Indian cannot be screened in the country. He alleged “fake papers” were being used to change the identity of sponsors to screen Indian films in Pakistan. He also produced a court order to back up his arguments. The court directed authorities not to allow the screening of films that are imported using “fake” documents and are not sponsored by a Pakistani or foreign national. The judge also directed the Film Censor Board and Board of Revenue to respond to the petition at the next hearing on November 25.

The court’s order came days after Pakistan’s electronic media regulator slapped fines worth Rs 10 million on 10 entertainment channels for airing excessive Indian and foreign content, including films and serials. Indian movies have largely fuelled a boom in the Pakistani box office after former military ruler Pervez Musharraf eased restrictions on their import in 2006. The screening of Indian movies was banned by Pakistan after the 1965 war but pirated copies of the films were widely available across the country. Bollywood movies, which are released almost simultaneously in Pakistan, have brought people back to cinemas and led to the construction of new cineplexes in cities like Islamabad and Lahore.

  • DFW Diwali Mela a Smashing Hit- 50,000 plus Celebrate

DFW Diwali Mela a Smashing Hit- 50,000 plus Celebrate

DALLAS (TIP): A mammoth gathering of enthusiastic Indian Americans to celebrate the festival of India- Diwali- must have hugely pleased the organizers- the DFW Indian Cultural Society who have been working hard to put in place an event which has made history. 50,000 plus. In the last eight years, since Satish Gupta, the present President of DFW Indian Cultural Society moved the Diwali Mela out of his house where for years he has been celebrating the event with community, the mela has been growing in proportions. With every passing mela, the organizers learnt from their experience and over the years have perfected the art of organizing well such a massive event. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a letter, addressed to all sponsors and booth holders from one of the organizers, Mr. R.K. Panditi, expressing the gratitude of the organizers and being almost apologetic for any deficiencies that they may have come across. I feel tempted to quote it ad verbatim, because I would let my reader know how humble even in success the organizers are. A lesson that may do good to many. It reads:

    img2

    EXPERIENCE LEADS TO PERFECTION

To achieve the level of success is only possible with the help of a dedicated team of people and more importantly the support of all the participants, booth vendors (Food and Non-Food), Sponsors and well wishers who contribute with one aim i.e. the success of this Gigantic Mela without any expectations or personal boundaries. For each one of them their participation and presence was more important. Whenever the food and non-food booths are assigned, it is always a major challenge and certain people are set in their mind that the assignment given was not a good spot or sometimes the crowd would not attract their booth for whatever reason. We want to assure each one of you that DFWICS makes every effort to give their best with one thing in mind that is your success, because your success is the success of our entire community at large.

Help and support received from all the booth owner’s is greatly admired despite the fact that some of them could not get the returns or results as they expected but each one of you made sure and gave hundred percent of your presence and support. Your dedication and support is recognized and appreciated by the entire community and DFWICS. We have learned a lot more to make it better next time. This year we were able to give all the vendors their entry passes in advance except the out of town folks. Next year we want to assure you all out of town booth owners will receive the best and would get the hospitality that would be second to none.

That’s a promise. Everyone appreciated the barricades set in front of food booths for proper lining without any chaos. Finally, we are climbing the ladder of becoming better than best with each one of your sincere support and participation. You all make a difference. Thanks a million. On behalf of DFWICS RK Panditi & team Nitu Singhal who was a master of ceremonies at the Mela has this to say about the Mela. 5F’s- Food, fun, festivities, fireworks and fans is how we can best describe the Diwali Mela 2013 of Dallas Fort Worth Indian Cultural Society (DFWICS), that was celebrated at the Cotton Bowl Stadium on November 2. “We like how DFW celebrates Diwali promoting our Indian culture. We are so far away from our motherland but with such active participations we do not feel an inch of separation from our families.

    img3

Thanks DFWICS for doing this”, says Mr. Arun Agarwal who visits every year with his ten and six year old kids. Speaking with The Indian Panorama, Mr. R.K. Panditi said that a record 50,000 to 52,000 persons visited the Mela where there were 146 booths. Educational institutions, like University of Dallas, media, entertainers and sellers of wares of different type, including food of a diverse variety were a part of the grand mela. The organizers clubbed Dussehra and Diwali festivities. Thus a Ram Lila was enacted before the fireworks heralded the spirit of Diwali. The scenes of Rama vanquishing Raana and returning to Ayodhya, with his wife Sita and brother Lakshaman were the culmination of Ramayana.

It was followed by Ravana dahan (burning the effigy of Ravana) followed by exquisite fireworks. A Bollywood entertainment segment is the sine qua non of any successful event in the US. The organizers made sure that the craze was well satisfied. The star entertainers were Monali Thakur and Aayushman Khurana who captured the moment with their spellbinding performances. Monali, an Indian idol, comes of a Bengali family. She made her mark in Bollywood with playback singing. Born in a family of singers, music runs in her blood. This cutest singing diva is making her career now as an actress in upcoming movies Lakshmi and Mango. TheChandigarh boy, Aaayushman Khurana made his Bollywood debut in the movie Vicky Donor two years ago and received many accolades for his performance. He is a rare combination of a singer and an actor.,

Kishore Kumar He has won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and Best Male Actor. Having worked in many radio and TV shows, this uprising star was worth watching and hearing. Earlier, Mike Rawlings, Mayor of City of Dallas, some other dignitaries that included Thomas W. Keefe, President of University of Dallas, and DFW Indian Cultural Society office bearers led by the president Satish Gupta lighted the lamp to do the formal inauguration of the Diwali Mela. The Mayor also launched on the occasion the first ever Indian American English weekly newspaper The Indian Panorama. He congratulated the publishereditor Prof. Indrajit S Saluja for the “commendable service ” he was doing to the community. So much for the Diwali Mela.

    img4

But our correspondent was curious to know how the mela got started and who was responsible for starting it. So, she went to the DFW Indian Cultural Society President Satish Gupta who has been organizing the now legendary Diwali mela for the last many years. This is what she writes about Satish Gupta. Now we talk about this man who grew up near Delhi but traveled throughout India before he landed up in USA and that too at a very young age. DFW ICS President Mr. Satish Gupta in an exclusive interview to the correspondent told her that growing up in Delhi was definitely fun filled especially the Diwali celebrations around October-November. They started preparing for the festivities 2-3 weeks in advance before the actual day of Diwali.

Preparing sweets, visiting relatives, rangoli designs, lighting the diyas (earthern pots used specially at this time of the year for this festival), buying new clothes, Ramlila, fireworks and last but not the least, a very happy atmosphere that lightens up the whole mood are the peak highlights of Diwali festival in India. “Our kids in particular missed all the festive mood here while being in USA. Temples have given their best and tried hard to establish a room whereby our kids get a medium to perform and get to know our culture. However, we needed a much bigger platform where our kids could come with their parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties, friends and relatives from all over and enjoy all these festivities under one roof.

So definitely we needed much bigger space and lot more accommodation to cope up with everybody’s needs”, says Mr. Satish Gupta. During the entire interview, Mr. Gupta kept emphasizing that putting together everything is primarily for kids that are born in USA because they really need exposure about our culture. Thus it all started from the backyard of his house where a few friends used to get together and celebrate the festival with full fervor including Ram-lila(short enactment about the life of Lord Rama-an Indian God). Slowly and steadily, the friend circle started growing and it became hard to have everybody under a roof.

It is then that Mr. Gupta and his team decided to hold Diwali Mela eight years ago on bigger grounds so lots of families could come together and celebrate. The team was expecting around a few thousands and, to their surprise, the turnout came to be nearly 20,000. Today, after successfully holding the event for 8 years, the crowd keeps on increasing and it has come to nearly 50,000 which is not only impressive but highly commendable and appreciative. “We will bring and do whatever connects each one of us to our roots”, says Mr. Gupta. The presence of highly recognized local dignitaries on this event makes it even more memorable. Many local non-profit organizations and educational institutes have shown their co-operation and support to the entire team of Diwali Mela.

This establishes a strong bond between different cultures not only within Indian origin but even those outside it. People are coming close and getting to know how vast and deep these roots are by spreading the word. Mr. Gupta says that they have received very positive response from all of them. They are indeed very thrilled and surprised at the fact that how close these festivities bring the families together.

The unity and integrity is there in each one of us but become far more visible when such grand events take place. With all the participation, kids talk about it in schools so their friends and teachers also get to know the importance of Diwali, like Christmas or Hanukkah has for others. According to Mr. Gupta, there are so many Indians everywhere in this world but there is a vacuum and it needs to be filled in a wider sense. He says, “Our vision as a parent, as a guide, as a teacher, as a Hindu should be to keep our culture alive within our kids because this was the vision of our parents when we were small. Our kids need to enjoy our festivities with fun rather than feeling bored.”

  • Thor: The Dark World

    Thor: The Dark World

STORY: Earth, Asgard and the universe are threatened with destruction by Malekith and the Dark Elves. When the Nine Realms converge and the Elves get their hands on the Aether, they’ll achieve their objective. Will our heroes stop them? REVIEW: Thor and his Viking gang get another big screen outing in a movie that ticks all the right superhero checkboxes. A quick prologue tells the story of how Malekith (Eccleston), Algrim (Adewale) and the Elves were defeated ages ago by Odin’s (Hopkins) father, Bor. Back then, Malekith was after the Aether, a protoplasm-like substance that has the power to return the universe to a primordial state. In the present day, when the Aether is released again on Earth, some of it enters Jane Foster’s (Portman) blood as it requires a host. This also gives Thor (Hemsworth) a great reason to go visit the Aether-host, Foster. The Aether’s reactivation awakens Malekith and the Elves from suspended animation and they once again set about on their malevolent mission of intergalactic annihilation, starting with Asgard. Odin tells Thor that an alignment of the Nine Realms, coupled with the Aether landing in the hands of the Elves, can spell disaster.

Thor soon realizes he needs Loki’s (Hiddleston) help. Loki, at his snarling, menacing best, is a far more potent threat this time around. In fact, if you want something beyond stud-god Thor’s alpha-male heroism, you will find Loki to be the only character with different shades. The effects are amazing but the best moments are when Thor and Loki share screen space. Loki has the power to make you empathize with him, but is that just another one of his deceptive tricks? Thor, Loki and whole Norse mythos is as complex as any school of mythology that was formed eons ago in days of old, when magic filled the air. This movie is also about sibling rivalry as well as a longdistance love story with an intergalactic twist. Don’t miss this one.

  • Satya 2

    Satya 2

STORY: A new don is born and he vows to reinvent the bloody ‘Bang-Bang’ business of the underworld. REVIEW: If you like your ‘truth’ bloodied, here it goes. This time RGV’s newly packaged don is of a different breed, but barely matches the ballsy bhaigiri of the original. Cut back fifteen years – when Ramu on creative Viagra, ripped open Mumbai’s ominous crime diaries for cinematic consumption. Tossing us into a dark, sinister world of lawless bhais, bhaus, gangstas and guns. Ever since, he’s flaunted his obsession for the inglorious D’s and their doomed destinies. Meet Satya No.2 (Puneet), donning crisp corporate casuals, rimless glasses and an attitude to match that (too blah for a budding bhai!). Hustling on, Satya takes on the challenge to undo failed formulas of past infamous dons, to create a new blueprint for the bhais in business. How? He forms a company called ‘Company’ (really!) and launches an invincible, intangible product called Darr.

He even finds executioners to market this hot-seller, and soon ‘Company’ turns into the deadliest crime outfit – topping the cops’ radar. Meanwhile, he weds lady-love, Chitra (Anaika) who spends more time sitting pretty and pouting, than performing. Debutant Puneet, as an intense, brooding don, puts in effort, but it appears like a gunshot and disappears quickly. His hushed huskiness is ineffective, and he’s unable to evoke any feeling of fear or fatality. He has promise, but has yet to realize it. ‘Satya 2’ (unlinked sequel), thrives on randomness and implausible ideas. This don is unconvincing, seeking no wrath or sympathy of the viewers. The supporting cast is too weak, and the unforgettable bhaichara, the potbellied Kallu maamas and boisterous Bhikus (of Satya fame) are sorely missed. RGV relies on his trademark camera angles, close-ups and deafening ‘Satya’ chants (background score) to heighten drama, but guns down the plot at the onset. Even a good hangover of the remarkable prequel might have salvaged this one. The film reiterates, “Company ek ‘soch’ hai.” We wish RGV had put in some soch into this. Truth be told, iss film ko goli maaro, and for the sake of nostalgia, watch the original, for posterity.

HC STAYS ARREST OF BHANSALI, RANVEER, DEEPIKA

CHANDIGARH (TIP): The Punjab and Haryana high court, on November 14, stayed the arrest of Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in connection with an FIR lodged against them in Jalandhar in connection with their movie Ram-Leela. Justice Jitender Chauhan of the high court has issued the order after hearing a petition filed by Bhansali, Ranveer and Deepika. When the case came up for hearing on Thursday, the counsel for the Bollywood stars pleaded that it was strange that the Jalandhar police registered the FIR without even ascertaining the facts. It was further argued that the grievance of the complainant in this case was that the movie’s title, the trailer and photographs were highly objectionable and offended the religious sentiments of general public believing in Hindu mythology. He argued that the story of the movie was contrary to the title, as it had nothing to do with Lord Ram’s life and the Delhi high court has already decided that no organization or individual can claim to be the sole interpreter to Hindu religion and sole proprietor of names of Hindu Gods. Bhansali, Ranveer and Deepika had moved the HC on Tuesday against the registration of case against them in Jalandhar. The police had booked Bhansali, Ranveer and Deepika in September on the basis of a complaint filed by one Lalit Kumar. The FIR was registered under Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the IPC.

  • Krrish 3

    Krrish 3

STORY: Each time evil awakens in the world, a superhero rekindles his superpowers. This time Krrish is back, with thrice the power to destroy the demonic Kaal and his bastion of beastly mutants. REVIEW: Evil doesn’t raise its ugly head anymore. It raises a finger. But then ‘Good’ flies too. In ‘Superhero’ form – Caped, masked, winged – with muscles of steel and hearts of gold. Our comic-book phirang fantasy boys have flown high as ‘Supermen’ in Hollywood epics for eons.

In India, only one man with an audacious flight of imagination – Rakesh Roshan – has thrice-over, superbly crafted a fantastical world ‘alien’ to Bollywood, with our very own amazingly evocative superhero – Krrish (Hrithik). Leaping from where the prequel ended, Krishna (Hrithik) lives with his wife (Priyanka), and genius Dad, Rohit Mehra (Hrithik). In twirling black cape and mask, he hurtles across the city on heroic rescue operations, playing good hubby and doing odd jobs (as the alter ego). But his life is uproariously interrupted with the emergence of a dark and destructive world of an evil called ‘Kaal’ (Vivek). A maniacal villain, with special powers and a venomous will to erase inferior beings – the human race. Kaal fuses DNA, to create an assortment of evil mutants called maanvars (manav+jaanwar) – a horned Rhinoman, red-eyed Antman, a Frogman (who gives lot of tongue) and a super-shapely chameleon Kaya (Kangna).

He wants to spread a deadly virus to exterminate humanity, but Krrish uses his superpowers to save ‘mankind’ from the malignant ‘mutakind’. Hrithik is truly the stuff superheroes are made of. Brandishing his Greek-God looks and almighty powers. Displaying larger-than-life flair and flying shoulder-toshoulder with any Hollywood superman. As the prosthetically pot-bellied and ageing Rohit, he is incredible. Vivek, as a physically disabled anti-hero is menacing as a ‘hellboy’. His lunatic laugh and whitewashed make-up make him fearfully fantastic. Priyanka is good in her limited role.

Kangna in her gothic and deviously dark avatar looks stunning and pulls off an outstanding act. With a visually riveting and emotionally engaging story, intriguing characters, sweeping VFX (unseen thus far on Indian celluloid) Rakesh Roshan’s ambitious dream lives up. Yes, it’s hugely inspired (by the Bats, Spideys and Wolverines of the West), but our superhero has his own ‘X-factor’. Even with all the high-octane car crashes, explosions and ‘animatronics’, the philosophy is the force behind it all, yet, never overpowering the story.

The songs are slightly disappointing and background score (Salim-Sulaiman) is good, but unable to amp up the magnitude of the film. For sheer vision, bravado and superlative execution, this one soars to new orbits. Latch on to this cape for an exhilarating ride.

  • Michelle Obama Hosts Diwali Celebrations at White House

Michelle Obama Hosts Diwali Celebrations at White House

WASHINGTON (TIP): A PTI report filed by Lalit K Jha on November 6 recounts how US First Lady won the hearts of Indians when she was in India and of Indian Americans here in the US. The report says, three years after she mesmerized Indians with her rhythmic dance in Mumbai, Bollywood dance made its official White House debut when US First Lady Michelle Obama danced to the tune of peppy Hindi tracks in the East Room along with Indian-American children. Michelle, who led the Diwali celebrations at the White House for the first time, lit the ‘diya’ amidst chanting of Vedic mantras. In 2009, President Barack Obama attended the Diwali celebrations for the first time at the White House. “This holiday is celebrated by members of some of the world’s oldest religions not just here in America but across the globe. Diwali is a time for celebration… As Barack and I learned during our visit to India, it’s a time to come together with friends and family, often with dancing and good food,” she said. “Diwali is also a time for contemplation and reflection. It’s a time for us to think about our obligations to our fellow human beings, particularly those who are less fortunate than we are. And as we light the diya – the lamp – we recommit ourselves to the triumph of light over darkness, of good over evil,” she said before lighting the ‘diya’.

Michelle was garlanded by Mythili Bachu, the Chair for the Council of Hindu Temples of North America, amidst applause from a select Indian-American audience. “We got to practice a little Bollywood this afternoon,” she told the audience at the East Room. Giving some of the poses from the Bollywood dances she did earlier in the day, Michelle said she danced along with the kids who were seated in the front rows of the East Room. “We had a wonderful time. It was the first time that we did Bollywood in the State Room here at the White House,” she said amidst applause from the audience, which comprised of the who’s who of the Indian- American Community members and those in the Obama Administration. Obama has the distinction of appointing the largest number of Indian-Americans in any presidential administrations yet. Wearing a glamorous skirt especially made for the occasion by India-born eminent designer Naeem Khan, Michelle gave a few poses from the dance number. “Of course, as you all know, I think I can dance,” she said in an apparent reference to her dance in Mumbai three years ago when she celebrated Diwali. “But not as good as they can dance,” she said, referring to the expert dance by members of the Gold Spot Band, the New York-based popular Indian-American band. Michelle also used the occasion to remember the victims of Oak Creek Gurdwara.

“As we gather here this Diwali, we remember that there is still evil in the world. And I’m thinking today about what happened in Oak Creek, Wisconsin just last year when an act of unthinkable violence shook a community to its core. But I am also thinking of how in the face of such evil, we also witnessed the power of goodness and forgiveness,” she said. “The families and community leaders I met when I visited Oak Creek just weeks after the tragedy, they showed us such courage and grace. Instead of giving in to bitterness or despair, they honored those they lost through service,” she said. “They honored those they lost through educating others about their faith and standing up to prejudice in whatever form it takes. I’m also thinking of all the people across America and around the world who held prayer vigils during that time and sent messages of love and support, and held the people of Oak Creek in their hearts,” she said.

Colonel Graff and Major Gwen Anderson (Davis) see tremendous potential in one cadet in particular – Ender Wiggin (Butterfield) – right from the start. He was absorbed into the military due to his mental acuity, his method of dealing with those stronger than him, his cunning and because he is a gaming expert. The other pre-teens are picked from terrestrial schools and indoctrinated to believe that compassion has no place on the battlefield.

They are militarized at such a young age because it is explained that young soldiers can absorb technology quicker than adults and can process a lot of sensory input without being spent or burnt out by mental exhaustion. All of that aside, however, it is still a bit unusual to see kids spoken to in the manner that adult soldiers are. Ender has his issues – the guilt he feels that he was chosen to lead an army instead of his siblings, as well as the trauma of being bullied. Apart from him, the acting is passable. Fellow cadet Petra (Steinfield) doesn’t have much of an impact and the bullying Bonzo (Arias) is quite unconvincing. It is nice however, to see Colonel Graff at his gruff best. Hood (Tsotsi, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) keeps the film’s main message – that of militarizing kids – clear throughout.

Digging a bit deeper, another question is posed – that if you were given the choice to kill someone who you know would return to kill you and your friends one day, would you go ahead and get them before they got you?

Yasmin Gupta, who shares with her husband a similar vision said, “Our dream is for the College of Business to become global meeting ground for diversity and understanding among all cultures. We hope it empowers students to become leaders who go forth into the world and build stronger communities”. In conversation with The Indian Panorama, Yasmin Gupta recalled that some three years ago when Satish was invited as a keynote speaker for a Commencement they found that the BusinessSchool had not changed much in 30 years. It was then that Satish and she decided to do their bit for the School of Business from where they had graduated. University of Dallas President Thomas W. Keefe, in appreciation of the generous donors said, “The Guptas set a tremendous example for our business students both in the drive and ingenuity they personify as entrepreneurs, and in their commitment to philanthropy and social responsibility.” President Keefe said University of Dallas believed in giving quality and personalized education. We have personalized relationship with our students. We treat them as individuals. The gift from Satish and Yasmin will help the University in further achieving the aim of providing quality and personalized education.

Robert F. Scherer, Dean & Professor of Management, in his comment to The Indian Panorama said the donation from Guptas will help the College of Business in many ways. The building that will come up with the donation will not only provide a marked visibility, as it will be located on the highest point in Dallas County, it will allow for practice based and problem based approach to be followed. It will allow the students and faculty to interact in a better environment. The building will facilitate holding of meetings, seminars and contribute to better interaction among students, faculty, businesses and community. He described Guptas as role models who will be inspiring a whole lot of people. The gathering at the announcement was very appreciative of the Guptas for making a generous contribution. The Indian Panorama spoke with some of them after the brief ceremonial announcement of the gift by President Keefe and Satish and Yasmin Gupta and found they had great admiration for the two for repaying the institution where they had studied some 30 years ago. Some said it will inspire others to come forward and pay back to the community. The gathering lustily cheered Guptas when President Keefe announced the donation. Remarks by Satish and Yasmin also received the gathering’s applause. The new building, SB Hall, will be a 50,000-square foot, three storey structure atop the highest point in the UD campus from where Downtown will be clearly visible. According to information provided by Chat Ganesh, Vice President Business Development, SB International, Inc. and a close associate of Satish Gupta, the building is expected to be completed by the end of July 2015 and should be ready for the Fall 2015 Semester opening. Satish and Yasmin Gupta are philanthropists and civic leaders besides being business executives.

The two serve Dallas/Fort Worth through various organizations related to cultural organization and outreach, including the Gupta Agarwal Charitable Foundation of which Satish Gupta is the Founder. They also support the Primary Care Clinic of North Texas and Greater Dallas Arya Samaj Cancer Clinic, a system of non-profit healthcare facilities providing medical care to local uninsured adults. Perhaps the most popular Indian American cultural event in Dallas is the Diwali Mela organized by Dallas Fort Worth Indian Cultural Society founded by Satish Gupta. Every year, in October/November, this popular event to celebrate “spirit of India” as Satish prefers to call the event, attracts 40,000 to 50,000 people who get glimpses of the rich Indian culture at play. Satish says he has combined Dussehra and Diwali and therefore, there is a Ram Lila and Ravan Dahan, signifying victory of good over evil, followed by fireworks to celebrate the victory. The mela provides a variety of entertainment for all age groups. There is a special kids corner. There are elephant and camel rides. There are the more modern laser shows. Community performances and Bollywood entertainment are integral parts of the mela And, of course, a variety of food in a specially carved out Food Court. The Diwali Mela 2013, the 8th in a row, is being held on November 2 at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas where Bollywood artists Monali Thakur and Arijit Singh will enthrall the audiences.

  • Amour

    Amour

STORY: This movie is the story of Georges and Anne, a retired octogenarian couple who once taught classical music. One morning at the breakfast table, Anne has a silent stroke, as a result of which her right side is paralyzed. What follows is an exquisitely crafted portrayal of one of the many meanings of love. REVIEW: A group of firemen break open the door to the apartment that Georges ( Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne ( Emmanuelle Riva) shared. One of them finds Anne’s corpse on a bed. Strewn around her are dried flowers that were once fresh. She is alone, the room is neat and well-lit. It is a scene that manages to be unsettling, yet conveys a quiet dignity and serenity. And in that sense, the conclusion of this film is deliberately conveyed from the initial scene, just like a visual metaphor for the circle of life. It then rewinds back to a time when the couple enjoyed the occasional outing, like attending a classical concert. The last show they watch has one of their past students playing a beautiful piano concerto.

Then, Anne’s stroke one fateful morning, which is probably the eeriest part of this movie, is a watershed moment in their lives. The portrayal of their re-aligned equation is dealt with remarkably. It is almost heartbreaking to watch how Georges stoically copes, no matter the odds. His patience is sometimes tested – he is only human, after all – but his devotion to Anne never flags. She feels guilty that she has become a burden, but he gently reassures her. Their daughter visits often and is deeply anguished on seeing the progressive deterioration of her mother’s physical and mental condition, especially when Anne suffers a second stroke. This movie has some heartbreaking moments and is moving, but on the lighter side, it is also somehow reassuring that we are never alone. Amour treats the subject of love in a manner that has seldom before been visited on screen.
