  • Elysium

    Elysium

STORY: Set in 2154, the film gives us a grim view of the future, where the poor live on an over-populated, ruined earth, the rich on a luxurious space station. Can one man bring about a change? REVIEW: Mutants, superheroes, aliens, gadgets…while Hollywood fancies fiction that’s more escapist, Neill Blomkamp, in his inimitable style, gives us a dark science fiction thriller that’s relevant to present-day society and existing social and economic inequality. Blomkamp’s splendid vision merges facts and fiction to give us a grim view of the future (the year is 2154), when earth is over-populated and ruined. The gap between rich and poor couldn’t be more evident. With crime and the disease rate on a high, the planet is no longer fit for human habitation. The rich relocate to a man-made space station ‘Elysium’, which exclusively offers them luxury and high-tech medical facilities.

In order to preserve their lifestyle, immortality and longevity, they ensure that the poor gain no access to Elysium. Max ( Matt Damon), an ordinary factory worker, gets exposed to a severe dose of radiation that can only be cured on Elysium. He has five days to live. Can he get there? No matter how gripping, Elysium is no match for Blomkamp’s hard-hitting ‘District 9’. Scenes of the protagonist Max running around, trying to get help from the thugs featured here, become repetitive. The villains (Jodie Foster as Elysium’s cold and conniving protector and Sharlto Copley as a sleeper agent) are onedimensional. However, what works in the film’s favour is the director’s satirical intent. There’s a scene where a factory owner asks his employee to cover his mouth while talking. Fearing he might catch an infection, he orders, “Don’t breathe on me.” It’s this acute portrayal of the mindset of the ‘heartless rich’ that grips you. The premise is thought-provoking with the whole ‘degradation of human life’ theme deeply affecting your psyche. Aerial shots of over-populated earth might even remind you of Mumbai. Elysium is like a warning of a disturbing future that we can all see coming.

VEENA MALIK TO GET BOLDER FOR A PSYCHO THRILLER

Veena Malik is all set to do a psychological spine chiller, ‘Cottage No. 9’. Director Navin Batra says, “The plot revolves around a married couple whose relationship gets affected due to one of them suffering from a split personality. Whether it is the husband or the wife with the disorder will be revealed only in the film.” This is the director’s second outing with Veena. He says, “Unlike other actresses — who wear hot pants and minis in real life, but turn ‘Savitris’ before the camera — Veena has no hang ups. The film has quite a few bold scenes and since I have worked with her earlier, I know the comfort level she shares with the camera.” The director is yet to zero in on the male lead. He says, “Actors like Gurmeet Choudhary and Kay Kay Menon are being considered. We will take a call soon.”

  • Besharam

    Besharam

STORY: Babli steals cars, fears nothing and romances like a rowdy Romeo. But gets away with benevolence and besharmi. REVIEW: Remote control Ranbir is here. He can change your mood with a flick of an emotion. Laughter, tears, joy and palang tod romeo-giri. Bedazzling the eyes with baubles, goggles and padded crotches. Yes, he packs in this ‘bulge’ with besharmi and fearlessness. At the outset, let me tell you that Kashyap’s (‘Dabangg’ fame) ‘Besharam’ lacks a kadak story. It has thoda herogiri, clap-trap dialogues, freestyle rowdy dancing and stylish stunts (borrowed from recent action films). Bas! But RK drives this one (taking fuel and pee breaks) through fast freeways and rocky roads. Babli (Ranbir), a baap-less boy, is a car mechanic-cumthief, with braveheart. Along with his partner-in-crime, Titu (Amitosh Nagpal), they steal cars to support the orphanage that housed them. The smooth operators have a touch of class too, they dress like MIB (‘Men In Black’) call themselves T1 & T2 (‘Terminator’).

During one carnama, they encounter the comical copcouple, Chulbul (Rishi) and Bulbul (Neetu) Chautala. Enter Tara (Pallavi), the ‘beauttee’ he falls for. He breaks her heart and spends the rest of the film fixing dils and dents. This seems like Kashyap’s test-drive with Ranbir, with average direction, un-moving music, and a screenplay that is unoriginal and so low on horsepower that it deflates before he revs the reel. He relies on the sheer 3K (read: Kapoors) power to entertain. Ranbir’s role may not be path-breaking, yet he’s in full control. He plays a riotous rowdy with utter confidence; using gags padded (stuffing his crotch with socks – even men need ‘enhancement’, no?), with humour that’s corny and horny. Ranbir is shamelessly, stylishly superb! If comic cracks weren’t enough, watch out ladies – there’s a real one, a flashed ‘butt-crack’ by RK! Second in command is his baap, really – Rishi Kapoor. He steals one of the best moments of the film when he gyrates to ‘Badtameez Dil’. He brilliantly plays the notso- dabangg Chulbul, with a biwi (in adorable act) who fires (verbal) bullets and chides his mardangi. Newcomer Pallavi is confident but needs coaching. Amitosh Nagpal (Titu) adds fuel to the comic-fire. While this is far from the best films of the year, if you shamelessly love Ranbir, go for it.

  • Phata Poster Nikhla Hero

    Phata Poster Nikhla Hero

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Ileana D’Cruz, Padmini Kolhapure Direction: Rajkumar Santoshi Genre: Comedy Duration: 2 hours 25 minutes Story: In his tryst to be a hero, Vishwas Rao ends up becoming a fake filmi cop. But fate offers him funnier choices.

REVIEW: Star-struck (rather Salman-struck) smalltowner, Vishwas (Shahid) lands in Mumbai with two sapnas. First, his own starry dreams (ruled by Rajnikanths and Khans) of being a Bollywood superstar. Second, his high-on-melodrama maa’s (Padmini) long cherished dream – “mera beta police afsar banega”. But fate takes a hilarious twist when he’s mistaken for a good cop (Thank Heavens, he has Chulbul Pandey for inspiration. With tighties, googles, dabanggisms, and his own sizzling ‘Munni’). He falls in love with the overzealous Kajal (Ileana), a social worker with many chaotic-causes. Soon he’s caught in chor-police crossfire between the dreadfully funny gangster Gundappa Das (Saurabh Shukla) and the asli good cop (Darshan Jariwala) – both put up rip-roaring acts.

In a comedy of errors and events, through heartbreak and hilarity, emotion and eccentricity, Vishwas flips between fake herogiri and asli heroism. Shahid is ‘phaadu’, really! Whether he’s doing the dhating naach (outstanding); playing rowdy Romeo, a goofy goon, or maa ka laadla; he’s back in form and packs in all with terrific chutzpah and comic flair. He makes the most of every ’emoticon’ there is and leaves you ‘ROTFL’. This one belongs to Kapoor and he revels in it. Ileana is good at emotions, but not so tuned into comedy yet. Padmini, the melancholic maa with tons of mascara plays the part with ease, though we wish she induced more laughs over tear-jerking ‘maa-kasam’ dialogues. Sanjay Mishra, as Vishwas’ Bollywood advisor is uproariously funny. Santoshi shows flashes of his previous ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’, odes to his own classics (‘Andaz Apna Apna’, ‘Ghayal’) and of course the ultimate fan-boy moment when Vishwas meets his screen idol Salman (the asli hero!).

The first half offers loads of cackles, chuckles, witticisms and spoofy scenes. Post-interval the comedy collapses for a bit with forced OTT drama, khaali-peeli action, and too many songs breaks, but makes a comeback with delightfully funny moments. This one’s worth it for the ‘howlarity’ of it all. And Shahid in his element. ‘Vishwas’ nahin hota? …Go watch! (LOL! Maa Kasam, it’s just the comedy hangover!)

PRIYANKA CHOPRA IS INDIA’S MOST DANGEROUS CELEB ONLINE

  • Rush

    Rush

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara Direction: Ron Howard Genre: Biopic Duration: 2 hours 5 minutes

STORY: Rush chronicles the famous rivalry between Formula One’s two fiercely competitive drivers, James Hunt and Niki Lauda, during the 1976 season. Lauda’s near-fatal crash and relationship with Hunt forms the story. REVIEW: It’s easy to glamourise a film based on Formula One racing, given the nature of the sport – extreme speed, adrenaline rush, roaring engines, champagne, hot Pit girls, playboy racers and sexy F1 cars. On the other hand, it’s also convenient to deglamourise a ‘sports biopic’ by giving it a documentary treatment. Ron Howard doesn’t succumb to either. His splendid execution strikes the right balance to give us a film that is visually stunning, moving, nail-bitingly intense and heroically entertaining, just like a Formula One Grand Prix.

While the sport is much safer today than it was in the ’70’s, what has stayed constant is the rivalry between drivers. So was the case with the notorious British playboy racer James Hunt ( Chris Hemsworth) and his brilliant, methodical Austrian opponent Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). The film revolves around their contrasting ideologies and their battle for the 1976 world championship. Their passion for victory pushes them to breaking point. You get to witness the tumultuous lives of these drivers, on and off the track. Also, the film doesn’t merely state facts in an episodic manner. The storytelling lends depth to the characters, leaving you emotionally invested in them. You feel their fear, regrets, insecurities and vulnerability. What adds to the film’s brilliance is its astounding cinematography, be it the wheel-to-wheel, rain-soaked racing or crash scenes.

Performances are supremely authentic as well. Both Hemsworth and Bruhl play their parts with utmost perfection. Background score creates the psychological tension required. If you are a F1 fan, you must know that Rush starts from the pole position, maintains its momentum and makes it to the chequered flag for a grand podium finish. Long after it’s over, you don’t think about death, danger, victory or rivalry. You remember two champions who didn’t race for a living but lived because they loved racing.

Besharam team lands at the Indian Consulate in New York

NEW YORK (TIP): “Cinema that does not entertain is boring. I find parallel cinema boring,” said veteran actor Rishi Kapoor at the promotional campaign of his upcoming film Besharam. He said it in response to a question on the contributions of parallel cinema to 100 years of Indian cinema. He added, “I have been fighting this for over 40 years, ever since I joined the industry. Why pay entertainment tax on something you are not entertained with? It takes a great deal of energy to do fight or romantic scenes. So I request people to not discount our efforts and instead stop giving credit to parallel cinema.” Kapoor senior was joined by his wife and costar Neetu Singh, Ranbir Singh and Indian Australian debutant actor Pallavi Shardha at the grand ballroom, at Indian consulate on Monday. The actors were in New York to promote their latest film ‘Besharam’ scheduled to release October 2.

The Kapoor Khandan (family) along with the new Indian Australian actress gave a special appearance at the Maharashtra Tourism Diwali at Times Square event where both Pallavi and Ranbir performed at the Light Up Times Square gig. For Ranbir, alumni of the School of Visual Arts in New York and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, celebrating Diwali on Times Square with his family and fans on Times Square was surreal. “All my life I’ve come to New York and walked the streets of Times Square completely anonymously,” he said, “and now 30,000 people are screaming my name! It was a surreal moment.” His 10 minute appearance made the crowd that had waited for him since morning, go ballistic. His female fans continued to follow him even at the press conference held at the Consulate for the film’s promotions. Besharam is a slapstick, in-your-face funny dialogues and proper, shameless fun. It is everything you’d expect from the director who gave us Dabang: slapstick, in-your-face funny dialogues and proper, shameless fun. The film is about Babli (Ranbir Kapoor) a street smart car mechanic is living in a Delhi orphanage.

He is charming and lives life to the fullest. He also steals cars to support his orphanage. He has no sense of right or wrong till he unwittingly hurts the love of his life, Tara (Pallavi Sharda) and is chased by cop couple Chulbul Chautala (Rishi Kapoor) and Bulbul Chautala (Neetu Kapoor). Babli realizes that there is no right way of doing the wrong thing. Babli sets out to fix all the wrongs in his life and he continues to be shameless about it. Sanjeev Lamba, CEO of Besharam’s distributor Reliance Entertainment, providing insight into the current state of Bollywood in relation to Hollywood and the international movie marketplace noted that among the major marketing strengths of Besharam was the fact that three members of the Kapoor family were the main stars, and appearing together onscreen for the first time. This according to Lamba was the reason for Besharam to have one of the largest global releases ever for a Hindi film which included an unprecedented 200 theaters across North America. “It’s only fitting because Ranbir is a rising superstar, his parents have made an immeasurable contribution to the industry, and it’s the first time they’ve acted with him,” said Lamba. “Besharam is an attitude. It’s where you listen to your heart and follow it. The tagline of this film means Babli isn’t afraid of getting insulted and he’s not looking for respect,” said Ranbir confessing that he is not a Besharam. “In real life I am actually pretty shy, but I guess in front of the camera I focus.

It is very important for an actor to be Besharam in front of the camera. Unless you express yourself fully you can’t connect with the audience,” said Ranbir who attended the School of Visual Arts in New York for three years, and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute here for another year. Asked for an anecdote about working with his father, Ranbir revealed that “in real life,” he never looked into his father’s eyes, but that during the filming of Besharam, he “discovered” Rishi’s eye color. Asked about the tag ‘Super star’ and its use in the present day context, Kapoor scion said, “The tag super star is over used today, It is used for anybody who delivers a Friday hit. To choose good scripts and work with good directors is the first step. But more importantly, I need a larger body of work to get there… For me and a new generation of actors, being a good actor is the new superstar.” He said the concept of super star is dying because “unlike yesteryears actors, today’s stars are everywhere, the mystery as an actor- that kept fans asking for more-is missing partly due to social media.” The consulate event began with a welcome address by Consul General of India Dnyaneshwar Mulay who introduced the film team and highlighted the contributions the Kapoors made during 100 years of Indian cinema.

He even praised the first family of Bollywood for contributing 84 years to the largest film industry in terms of production of films every year. Bollywood’s Kapoor family goes back four generations. Prithviraj Kapoor was an actor (roles including the emperor Akbar in the 1960s historical epic Mughal E Azam) and theater company founder. His sons Raj, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor likewise became famous actors and directors. Karishma, Kareena and Ranbir are now carrying the legacy. Asked at the press conference whether he felt jealous of his son who had made his remarkable mark in a much shorter span of time than he had, Rishi Kapoor said he couldn’t be more proud of the “male heir to the legacy” of the Kapoor family. He said he felt fortunate that he had worked on three films with his late father, Raj Kapoor, including the 1973 blockbuster Bobby, Rishi’s first film as male lead. Neetu Singh too made a couple of remarks, including the one that she was proud of Ranbir. Another was that she and Rishi ensured giving the best values of life to their children. In fact, it was for the consideration of raising the children in a befitting manner that she had decided to keep herself away from working in the films. And Ranbir flattered her with the observation that he found his mother to be the best artist to work with. It was a pleasure to see a doting family.

History making Indian Diwali at Times Square mesmerizes visitors

NEW YORK (TIP): Diwali maybe a month away but for Indian Americans at Times Square, festivities started as early as September 22 when the entire cast of Besharam made a special appearance at the ‘Maharashtra Tourism Diwali at Times Square’. But Diwali at Times Square was much more than just the special performances from the Besharam team. Roughly about 30,000 people attended the Diwali event on Sunday at the busiest area for pedestrians in the world where 3,00,000 people visit every day. In a bid to tap major international source markets and increase tourist arrivals, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) participated in the early Diwali celebrations. Speaking on the occasion Minister for Tourism, Government of Maharashtra, Chhagan Bhujbal said, “Due to this event, the image of Maharashtra is going to be boosted in all international markets, not just in the USA. We want foreign tourists to come to Maharashtra, explore its rich cultural heritage and UNESCO world heritage sites like Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta caves.

    img010

They should also visit Tadoba Tiger Sanctuary, near Nagpur, where any tourist would spot tigers. It is my pleasure to invite all international tourists to indulge in the luxurious Deccan Odyssey train which covers the beautiful Maharashtra.” Mr. Satish Soni, Director – Tourism, Government of Maharashtra said, ‘It’s an extravagant event for Maharashtra tourism in a foreign land. We are glad at its grand success as thousands of people visited and enjoyed the event at the magnificent Times Square. We appeal to the people of the world to come to Maharashtra for an unforgettable experience. “There were many enquiries for the Deccan Odyssey train followed by the wildlife reserves, mostly from foreigners and local Americans,” said one of the organizers at the tourism booth. The festivities showcased Indian music, cuisine and fashion. Times Square between 45th to 47th streets was bustling with tourists and visitors dressed in traditional attire as they lined up to get the saffron Kolhapuri turbans, pointed mustache masks, Gandhi caps and chudis (bangles). The cultural festival included dance, diya, rangoli painting, Indian arts and crafts, fashion show, photo booths with ethnic outfits, celebrity autograph/photo booth and much more. The event saw some famous dancers performing Lavani, and other well-known Marathi dances styles, Bhangra, fusion etc.

Dhol – Tasha and Tutari enthralled the crowds eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of their favorite Bollywood stars. Groups like Sangharsh and Sankalp promoted Govinda festival by forming human pyramids. Late in the evening at the Light Up Times Square concert had the music maestro Shankar Mahadevan also created a sensation through his voice and musical troupe. “Where in my dreams did I think that I will sing Ganpati bhajan at Times Square,” said Mahadevan. The concert also saw Canada based group Culture Shock perform live on a mix of songs. Although Indian Americans dominated the crowd many tourists as well as local Americans enjoyed the festivities. “This is my first ever encounter with India. I have heard a lot about the country that it is colorful and vibrant but experienced it for the first time. I loved the energy and the sense of community and also the samosas. My next holiday destination is India for sure,” said Suzan Lew. The festival encountered mixed reactions from the Indian Americans. “Diwali is a festival of lights and what better place to celebrate than Times Square. It is like a mela out here, I have never seen such a crowd in the US. Only Indians can party like this, I am proud to be an Indian,” said Pragya Mahajan who wore a saffron turban. “Celebrating Diwali at Times Square is celebrating the cultural capital of the world (India) at the cultural capital of the United States,” said Sunny Doshi, a new Jersey resident.

While there were positive responses to the event, many Indian Americans were disappointed with the ‘westernized’ Diwali celebrations and poor management. “Speakers at the very end did not work. We tried to go forward but feared stampede and because there were no screens to look at we headed back,” said Reetu Kumar who had come with her 68 year old grandmother. The night culminated into the star studded performances from Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor, and debutant Pallavi Shardha who made a special appearance along with Rishi and Neetu Kapoor to promote their upcoming film Besharam. The crowd gathered at Times Square went ballistic on catching a glimpse of one of Bollywood’s most eligible bachelors. Dressed in a black ‘sherwani’, the young Kapoor danced and interacted with his fans as his father recalled visiting the city years ago and expressing gratitude for the adulation shown to him and his family. Congratulating Maharashtra Tourism for its achievement, Rishi Kapoor said, “I am proud to be a part of Maharashtra.” Complimenting ASB Communications and Event Guru, Shankar Mahadevan said, “Congratulations for pulling this off. To do this at Times Square was close to impossible. God bless”. “I came to the USA over 36 years ago and I still remember being awed by Times Square when I first saw it. I told myself even at that time that I will showcase the diversity and richness of India at this location. I am so thankful to all those who came here today. I am equally thankful to Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, Air India, MoneyGram, DishWorld, Wells Fargo, Bank of Baroda and all other sponsors without whose support this event would not have been possible”, said Neeta Bhasin, President, ASB Communications, the conceptualizer of the event.

  • KOHLI BEATS DHONI AND SACHIN IN ENDORSEMENTS

KOHLI BEATS DHONI AND SACHIN IN ENDORSEMENTS

MUMBAI (TIP): India’s hottest young cricketer Virat Kohli is setting the world of brand endorsements alight. The Indian captain-in-the-making, whose exploits on the field, combined with his youth, good looks and never-say-die attitude, makes him a winner off the field too, has inked a Rs 10- crore per annum deal with German sports goods giant Adidas. The three-year contract, perhaps the most lucrative to be signed by an Indian sports star, will see the swashbuckling right-hand batsman endorsing the brand’s apparel and shoes. The Delhi lad has also struck a Rs 6.5 crore a year deal with a tyre brand that had master batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Steve Waugh as its ambassadors, a person familiar with the development revealed.

The two deals will see Kohli topping the likes of Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Tendulkar in terms of annual earnings per brand endorsement. Kohli, who turns 25 later this year, pocketed around Rs 40 crore from endorsements last year, but that sum may swell up substantially with these two deals in his kit bag. Currently, he lends his face to as many as 13 brands, including Pepsi, Toyota and Cinthol deodorants. An Adidas spokesperson declined to comment on the development.

Tendulkar, who is Adidas’ current brand ambassador, is perhaps at the fag end of his illustrious career. And Kohli fits the bill perfectly as he is being groomed to take over the top job from Dhoni after the 2015 ICC World Cup, an executive from a sports management firm, who did not want to be named, said. Bunty Sajdeh-led Cornerstone Sport and Entertainment manages the Indian vicecaptain’s endorsement contracts. Sajdeh was unavailable for comment. Kohli’s annual endorsement fee has seen a meteoric rise over the past year, rivalling the likes of Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor, the hottest brand ambassador in the film industry.

Till last year, the cricket star used to command Rs 3 crore per brand annually, which went up to Rs 6 crore. The Rs 10-crore a year deal with Adidas propels him to a different league altogether. “For the past few years, Dhoni has been ruling the endorsement space, but Kohli is catching up very fast. While Dhoni connected well with the masses, Kohli has a more urban appeal which a lot of brands want to cash in on,” said Indranil Das Blah, COO of celebrity management firm CAA Kwan. The price escalation in Kohli’s endorsement contracts has meant that a lot of brands which had signed him early on must shell out much more to renew their deals or simply end their association with him. “We are willing to pay a premium, depending on what that number is.

He has been a great fit for our brand which targets youngsters, and he has grown with us,” said J Suresh, MD and CEO, Arvind Lifestyle and Brands which has had the cricketer on board for three years as Flying Machine’s brand ambassador. The jeans-wear brand signed Kohli before the World Cup at a moderate price and its contract is up for renewal. With Rs 10 crore becoming the new benchmark, many brands will find it hard to match up to Brand Kohli’s price tag. Until recently, Kohli and Nike were in a five-year contract inked in 2008. However, things turned sour between the two sides when the US sports goods major went to court claiming Kohli had breached the contract by disagreeing to continue as its brand ambassador till 2014. But the Karnataka high court ruled in favour of the cricketer,

Higgins (Spade) has a visit from a son he didn’t know he had while Eric (James), well, he’s just busy trying to perfect the art of burping, sneezing and passing wind at the same time – a technique he calls ‘burpsharting’.

From here, the movie seems largely improvised, like the scene where the wives bump and grind with gratuitous cleavage shots for a very unconventional aerobics class. Or, the time they haul Eric to a lake for a swimming session, stumble on to a college party and are ragged. In this scene, Taylor Lautner steals the show. Apart from family values and sticking by your friends, scriptwriters Sandler, Herlihy and Wolf speak about a healthy appreciation for the curvaceous female form. You’re not going to watch this film looking for finesse. There are Sandler movies with far better laughs. In fact, it’s a little hard to describe this film as anything more than a bunch of grown men acting like dorks and in the process, attempting to wrangle a few gags out of situations that seem like a home video stretched to feature film length. The only thought that this film might provoke is to make you wonder what Sandler and gang were thinking when they made this.

  • MALLIKA DOES IT AGAIN

    MALLIKA DOES IT AGAIN

There she goes again. Anything for publicity — and brazen be damned! That’s Mallika Sherawat for you, ladies and gentlemen (remember her last accent-bhara ‘India is sooo conservative’ Cannes interview?), the lady who jumps, or let’s say in this case, sings right into any publicity gimmick that she can. Guess what the esteemed Cannes ‘invitee’ has been doing between zipping around Rajasthan shooting for the KC Bokadia’s ‘Dirty Politics’ (well…), shooting for a reality show, and going ‘baaack home’? Singing Happy Birthday, recording it, and posting it online. And mind you, it’s a special dedication to none other than Narendra Modi. So, she starts by announcing she’s going to sing for her ‘perfect bachelor’, and starts a very out of tune ‘Happy Biiiirthday Narenderji…’ (she ends with ‘er’ — her native tongue style) and that’s when she realizes nothing in her angrezi vocabulary rhymes with ‘Narenderji’, so in the next line, she continues with the ‘jiiii’ till her voice peters out.Well, she’s proved one thing: Priyanka and Exotic she definitely is not.

Twitter sort of erupted with funny one liners after Mallika’s birthday act on Tuesday.”Sherawat manages to sing even Happy Birthday out of tune. That is how talented she is,” read one tweet, “And our own Mallika Sherawat sings birthday song for @narendramodi. After this performance she can be renamed Mallike SheraWTF,” said another. “What!! Mallika Sherawat is crooning for NaMo’s birthday. Hope Poonam Pandey is not in the mood for competition,” went yet another. Whatever it is, that plain simple Mallika Syndrome (read: a nose that smells for free publicity) of hers has now made her a sniggering point even in political circles, for some time to come. Maybe Mallika will be inundated with birthday party invites of many politicians in the coming days, but aaj ke din, there’s definitely Mr Modi wishing he were born another day!

  • Grand Masti

    Grand Masti

STORY: Three married men plan to get up to some bachelor pranks during their college reunion. Do they go all the way or do they chicken out?
REVIEW: Grand Masti stakes its claim to being Bollywood’s first adult comedy. And, just like the innumerable puerile potboilers that India’s dream factory churns out with a warning that says — leave your brains behind, this one should have a disclaimer that reads, ‘Leave your pretensions behind’. Once you do this, you can sit back and laugh aloud at the crass jokes this film throws up at regular intervals. College mates Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani have uncontrollable libidos, but get very little sex in their married lives. Their mundane existence stems from the fact that their wives —- Karisma Tanna, Sonalee and Manjari Fadnis — give more attention to work, the baby and family, in that order. But there appears to be someone listening to their prayers.

A college reunion gets them together. And they fervently hope this would be their chance to chase skirts and their fantasies. On campus, the men reunite with an over-sexed teacher, Rose ( Maryam Zakaria), a vacuous brunette, Mary ( Bruna Abdullah) and Marlow (Kainaat Arora), whose names, when pronounced together, beat most expletives. A lot of double-meaning jokes, oohs and aahs reveal that the women in their lives are related to their college principal, who lands up at the doorstep just when the action is getting heated. Some more sexual mayhem follows and before you know it, the irrepressible threesome is lying on hospital beds with multiple fractures. They sheepishly vow never to stray. Riteish, Vivek and Aftab are comfortable in their roles and even manage to say some of the most terrible things with a poker face. The girls are not really required to act. While the wives are shown to be particularly dumb, the temptresses with vacuous expressions and ample cleavage make the impact they are required to.

  • VIDYA BALAN SHEDDING EXTRA KILOS FOR HER NEXT WITH EMRAAN

VIDYA BALAN SHEDDING EXTRA KILOS FOR HER NEXT WITH EMRAAN

Bollywood’s favourite yoyo dieter Vidya Balan is at it again. This time the actress is on a dieting spree to shed the pounds for her next venture with Emraan Hashmi. Vidya had cut a rather full figure in her last film with the actor, ‘Ghanchakkar’, where she played a loud mouth Punjabi housewife. But in the upcoming Mohit Suri project produced by Vishesh Films, Vidya will portray a florist working in a posh hotel chain and the actress is in a bid to quickly lose the pounds in a bid to fit the prim mould of the character. The filmmakers did not ask Vidya to lose weight, but she knew that the role demanded that she be trim. She is an intelligent artiste who puts in a lot of effort to portray characters convincingly, so she is on a strict diet and exercise regime.

  • Riddick

    Riddick

STORY: Hunt for the intergalactic convict ‘Riddick’, who can see in the dark, continues in this third installment of the sci-fi series. REVIEW: The film captures exploits of Riddick ( Vin Diesel), after he is deceived and left for dead on an obscure planet full of alien predators. All he knows about his existence is the fact that he’s not on Furya. To add to his woes, he is also being chased by bounty hunters, who want him dead. The tough guy’s fight for survival forms the story. Do the antics of a lone Riddick marooned on a hostile planet manage to hold your interest? It does to a certain extent, especially in the opening scenes, where you see Riddick playing a deadly hide-and-seek with the murderous creatures. However, eventually, the storyline ends up free-floating as if lost in space, just like its lead character. After a while, the killings and order of events start looking monotonous, making the film seem more of a low-budget slasher movie than a sci-fi thriller.

Those who like horror might like the gore – chopping of heads and bodies but the profanities hurled at women, homosexuals are a bit unsettling, even given the context and genre of the film. Riddick solely relies on the bald & beefy Diesel’s macho appearance and deep-raspy voice. No effort has gone into penning a substantial screenplay or making the visual effects look better. Dark visuals of barren, lifeless planet fail to create the desired impact. Nothing really instills fear. We wonder if even fans of the franchise, had high expectations from this sequel, given the mediocrity of the previous film (The Chronicles of Riddick). Everything about the film looks as artificial as the glowing-eyes of its central character, barring the cool bikes.
