SCARJO FILES LAWSUIT OVER USING NAME IN FRENCH NOVEL

Scarlett Johansson is suing another author of a bestselling French novel for featuring a fictional character that resembles her. In a legal action, the American actress is challenging writer, Gregoire Delacourt, and his publisher JC Lattes, after he described a character in his novel as being her “doppelganger”, or exact double, the Independent reported. The case, if it comes to court, is expected to make legal and literary history.

The author is insisting that the comparison is meant as a compliment and tribute to Johansson’s beauty. The 28-year-old actress is demanding compensation and damages from the publisher for the “breach and fraudulent use of personal rights” and is also seeking to ban all foreign translations and film adaptations of the book.

The book in question, La premiere chose qu’on regarde (The First Thing We Look At), was published in March. Meanwhile, Delacourt told the newspaper Le Figaro that he is “stupefied” that Johansson has taken legal action, but he is convinced that she has not even read the book, which has so far appeared only in French.

I Trust Srk Personally And Professionally: Deepika

Actress Deepika Padukone, who has teamed up with superstar Shah Rukh Khan yet again after a gap of six years for action-comedy ‘Chennai Express’, says she trusts him very much personally as well as professionally. The model-turned-actress made her debut opposite Khan in ‘Om Shanti Om’ in 2007 and was directed by Farah Khan.

The film saw her in a double role. “It was glad to be working with him again. He has become my very good friend today. He is someone I trust personally and professionally. I am sure he will always be there for me whenever I need him,” Deepika told . ‘Chennai Express’ directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Gauri Khan under her production banner Red Chillies Entertainment will release on August 8. “It was lot of fun working on the film. It was a great experience.

Rohit is known for making comedy films and this film as well has turned out to be very entertaining. It is very different from what he has done. I am quite excited about its release,” Deepika said. The film is the story about a man’s journey from Mumbai to Rameswaram and what happens during the journey. The 27-year-old would be seen next in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much talked about film ‘Ram Leela’, which is said to be an adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic love story Romeo and Juliet, set in violent times.

Deepika has been paired opposite Ranveer Singh for the first time in this film and gossip mills are already abuzz with their close equation. About his co-star Ranveer, she said, “He is a fabulous actor, he is very talented. It was a great experience working with him. I don’t feel the need to go and clarify things to people.

My Mother Is My Hero: Sonali Bendre

Who is Sonali Bendre’s real life hero? The actress calls her mother her hero for raising three daughters with very limited resources and giving them wings despite being not so educated. She admits this kind of heroism is not so uncommon in the country. “My mother has done a great job with her kids,” the 38-year-old actress said in a group interview.

“The daily struggle of raising three daughters with a very limited income, yet seeing to it that they get a good upbringing, giving her daughters the wings even after not being so educated – that person is my hero,” Bendre added. Having said that, she feels that “this kind of heroism is in most of the women in India because they all are doing that.” Hailing from a middle-class family, Bendre entered filmdom through ads and later rose on the firmament with her work in Sarfarosh, Zakhm, and Duplicate.

After playing a successful innings, she tied the knot with filmmaker Goldie Behl and settled down. Mother of a seven-and-a-half-year-old son, she has an immense respect for women who balance family and work. “I had the luxury of making a choice (whether to work or not). All the women don’t have this luxury and I really don’t know how they do it. If I had to do everything on my own, I would have fallen apart,” she confessed. “I have an immense amount of respect for women who leave their kids and go to work, because they have to. They don’t have a choice. I couldn’t have done that,” she added

  • Movie Review – Cinderella 3D

    Movie Review – Cinderella 3D

Cast: Yolande Moreau, Alexandra Lamy, Isabelle Nanty, Antoine de Caunes, Michel Boujenah
    Direction: Pascal Hérold
    Genre: Animation
    Duration: 1 hour 21 minutes

STORY: The classic Cinderella story is given a cowboythemed, Wild West style makeover. This time, it is Cinderella who does the rescuing, along with a group of friends. MOVIE REVIEW: This is probably the most extreme deviation from the classic Cinderella tale that you will have seen so far. Made by the French (its original French title is Cendrillon au Far West), with English overdubbing in curious accents, this avatar of Cinderella is no cowering wallflower.

She’s a cowgirl who swaps the ball gown for a pair of jeans. Life is fairly humdrum for everybody until she hops on an actionpacked quest to save the mother of a prince who has been kidnapped by a group of gorilla pirates. Another big change – the glass slipper here is a missing tooth. And there’s no fairy godmother; here, Cinderella has a simpering shaman to help her with the bits involving magic. The rendering and colours, though saturated, are several pegs below the kind of top-notch work that lovers of the animation genre expect to see in films these days.

The animals are all anthropomorphic and yet, it’s not easy to figure out who is what. For example, Cinderella looks like a talking dog with pigtails that rides what seems to be an ostrich. The pirates, dressed in seafaring garb, operate in what looks like an arid desert and for some reason mariachi music seems to permeate most of the film. It’s a puzzling combination that does not sit right. While creative adaptations to fairytales are all very well, this one is just too much of an aggregation of parts that does not make up a wholesome whole.

The preproduction of the film has already started. A source told us, “Katrina wants to be a part of this heroine-centric film. It will give her a lot of scope to perform. Katrina according to reports has been showing her eagerness to take up the project. Other than Bang Bang and Dhoom 3, she has not signed up any new film yet. In the off chance that Kat does not do the film, at least it would not be for the lack of dates or initiative on her part.

AMANDA BYNES TO SUE NEW YORK POLICE

Actress Amanda Bynes says she will sue the New York Police Department (NYPD) after she was arrested last week and charged with many unfair things. The 26-year-old was last week charged in court with attempted evidence tampering, reckless endangerment and marijuana possession, after being arrested at her New York City apartment. However, Bynes insists she did nothing wrong and was unfairly targeted by police, reports contactmusic.com.

In a lengthy rant on Twitter, she wrote: “For once and for all, this is the last thing I’ll say about the mistaken arrest. I’m suing NYPD for illegally entering my apartment, lying about drugs on me and lying about me tampering with non existent drug paraphernalia, then I’m suing for being put into a mental hospital against my will, then locked up overnight for coming home after a facial and working out with my trainer like the good girl that I am. I’m allergic to alcohol and drugs and don’t partake in any of the above.”

“I’m so offended by all of this but so proud to not be a drug or alcohol user. I don’t need to talk about this anymore.” “My lawyer and I are taking this offense so seriously! Everything they did was against the law and the judge saw that there was no drugs on me or proof of any type of bong or mental illness (I was so offended to even be taken to a mental hospital and they would not let me call my lawyer until the next day after being in jail all night, then I went to court and was immediately released because the judge saw that I was wrongly arrested,” Bynes said.

    MOVIE REVIEW – FAST & FURIOUS 6

Cast: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Michelle
Rodriguez, Luke Evans, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana
    Brewster, Gina Carano
    Direction: Justin Lin
    Genre: Action
    Duration: 2 hours 11 minutes

STORY: Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker) are in Rio, living it up after bringing down a drug kingpin in the franchise’s previous instalment. They’ve left crime behind, only to be drawn back by the promise of finding alive a loved one (Rodriguez as Letti) they’d thought was dead. But to get to her, they have to hit the streets again. This time, in London. MOVIE REVIEW: We catch up with Dom and his crew as they cool their heels after pulling off their ‘Rio Heist’ and bringing down Braga. Dom has moved on but still pines for Letti.

Brian’s become a family man and father to a baby boy. Agent Hobbs (Johnson) offers a deal: find and bring Owen Shaw, a mercenary trained in vehicular warfare, to justice in return for information on Dom’s thought-dead love and grudgingly, full pardons for his crew, so they can return home to the US. As they embark on a mission for their own purposes, the “family” of speed demons soon finds themselves up against Shaw, an enemy that’s “in the game” and relies solely on “precision and planning” to carry out their assignments.

Letti has lost her memory and we see her become a pawn in Shaw’s game for most of the film. Is the family reunited again? Clocking in at over two hours, the film is filled with all the high-octane speed chases and close combat scenes we’ve come to expect from the franchise. And while it doesn’t disappoint in the outrageously and shamelessly fun bang-em-cars, road rage and the cheesy humour departments, it does drag by taking “detours” and selfdiscovery trip subplots that could easily have been done without.

Lin’s at the helm for the fourth time and the confidence (and over-indulgence, thereof) shows. The girl-on-girl fight scenes are actually more kick-ass than the ones with the guys. Of the supporting cast, Ludacris has the best lines. The new characters impress. That being said, this one’s purely for fans of the franchise and action junkies alike.

  • Maryland honors Bollywood director at Shortcut Romeo promo event

Maryland honors Bollywood director at Shortcut Romeo promo event

NEW YORK (TIP): State of Maryland has honored Bollywood film director Susi Ganeshan with a citation for his contribution to Indian cinema. Recalling his 15 years of service and hard work to promote Indian movies, especially Tamil and now Hindi, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley said in his citation that the State of Maryland is proud to bestow the honor for his contribution to the entertainment industry.

Dr. Rajan Natarajan, Deputy Secretary of State of Maryland and one of the highranking Indian-American political appointees, presented the citation signed by Governor Martin O’Malley and the replica of great seal of the State of Maryland to Ganeshan at an event in New York attended also by Bollywood actress Puja Gupta, the heroine of his soon-to-be released movie Shortcut Romeo. Dr. Natarajan said Maryland is keen to support Bollywood and would provide all facilities to filmmakers keen to shoot movies in his picturesque state.

The Governor led a delegation to India recently and is keen on doing business with India. Recently, during his trip to Chennai Dr. Natarajan met with Superstar Rajnikanth and bestowed on him special honor by Maryland Governor. Ganeshan and his team were in New York to promote their latest Bollywood movie Shortcut Romeo after screening the movie and doing red carpet at Cannes Film Festival along with Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta. Addressing a press conference in Tulsi restaurant last week organized by Varli Media, Molecule Communications and Pria Haider, actress Puja Gupta said as an actress she doesn’t have any limitations.

“I don’t have any limitations as an actor. As an actor you shouldn’t limit yourself. An actor should have the liberty to do whatever they want to and the director is the one who will decide.” The model-turned-actress has featured in two films F.A.L.T.U. and Go Goa Gone so far and said: “I love that I have become an actress. I never thought I will be an actress. I will try to do the best with the roles given to me…I will do bold roles if I am comfortable with it.

“The 24-year-old describes Ameesha Patel, with whom she will share the screen space in Shortcut Romeo, as a “wonderful costar”. “She is so gorgeous. She is senior to me and has spent a decade in the industry. There is lot to learn from her.” This is Susi Ganeshan’s first Hindi movie and the remake of Tamil Nadu Government award winning Tamil movie Thiruttu Payale.

Ganeshan addressed several differences between the two versions, starting with, Why a remake in the first place? Noting a current trend for remakes in Indian cinema, Ganeshan pointed to the vast Bollywood marketplace-and audience for Bolly films–compared with that of Tamil language films. He then related the challenges faced by a director who decides to remake one of his own films.

To distinguish Shortcut Romeo from Thiruttu Payale, Ganeshan chose a different location, setting it in Kenya instead of India and Australia. He said Kenya provided a location unexposed to Indian film goers, who have now journeyed just about everywhere else in the world on screen. “I filmed in Melbourne for the previous film and don’t want to go to a place I previously used,” he explained.

“As a creator, I get bored if I copy my own stuff.” When shooting the Hindi version he faced a dilemma in differentiating the camera shots from the Tamil original. “There must be a small change at least,” he said. On an even more fundamental plane, he noted that it was “tough learning Hindi,” as his “mother tongue” is Tamil. Hence, it was also tough “finding an exact match” in Hindi for the original Tamil title, with Shortcut Romeo serving to evoke the search among the generation represented by the film’s characters for shortcuts to money, fame and success.

“The only barrier” he said, “is achieving the right performance, and feel. “Feel” was especially important when it came to the music for Shortcut Romeo, which was composed by hit Bollywood composer Himesh Reshammiya. “He’s a more popular music director than anyone in [Tamilspeaking] South India, and I needed the right music director for the different musical structure of Bollywood,” said Ganeshan. “I explained to him, ‘This is what I want,’ and he gave me a number of options to choose from.

We came up with the correct mix of melody songs-which I always loveand fast-paced, peppy dance numbers.” He singled out the soundtrack’s “Khali Salam Dua,” a melodic romantic ballad sung by Mohit Chauhan, as did Bollywood newcomer Pooja Gupta, the 2007 Miss India Universe, who has a key role in Shortcut Romeo. “It’s very meaningful music, subtle and mellow, with the beat of the soul,” said Gupta.

“It touches your heart.” Shortcut Romeo is an Indian romantic crime thriller film directed and produced by Susi Ganeshan under the banner of Susi Ganesh Productions. It is the Hindi remake of the director’s own Tamil film Thiuttu Payale (2006), starring Neil Nithin Mukesh in the title role with Puja Gupta as his love interest and Ameesha Patel in a negative character. The film was screened at Marche du Film at Cannes Film Festival.

It is releasing on June 21 all over the world. Himesh Reshmmiya has scored the music and N K Ekambaram is the Director of Photography. Dilip Deo and Hardik Singh Reen have taken care or editing. Susi Ganeshan has directed some award winning movies in Tamil such as Virumbukiren, Five Star, Thiruttu Payale and Kanthaswamy.

  • Movie Review – The Great Gatsby

Movie Review – The Great Gatsby

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan,Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Amitabh Bachchan
    Direction: Baz Luhrmann
    Genre: Drama
    Duration: 2 hours 24 minutes.

Story: Jay Gatsby conquers poverty and becomes ‘great’ – but is he good enough for elegant Daisy, married to aristocratic Tom?

Movie Review: Right up, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (TGG) is Hollywood’s Devdas. Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and Daisy (Mulligan) fall in star-crossed love. Poor and ambitious, Gatsby reinvents himself, but Daisy’s won by aristocratic, womanizing Tom (Edgerton). Jay arrives in 1920s New York, abuzz, as Daisy’s cousin Nick Carraway (Maguire) notes, with a ‘golden roar’. Stocks and skyscrapers are shooting up, prohibitions and morals crashing down. Suddenly-rich Gatsby becomes NY’s newest celeb, throwing his fantastic (Disney-inspired?) mansion open for amazing parties, befriending Nick hoping he’ll bring Daisy back to Gatsby’s life. Which Nick does – but does the party end in whimpers or bangs? Luhrmann’s take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is a beautiful bash – that lasts too long. On the upside, the music’s super and the 3D – decorating dinners to orgies, advertisements gliding silkily along a taxi – stunning. Add DiCaprio, perfect as the golden, mysterious, toffee-hearted Gatsby, to Maguire – that most wry of observers, the loner at the party – and you’re swept away by the mood. Other performances fit like icecubes – Mulligan conveying Daisy’s soft, deadly uncertainties, Debicki dashing as ironic golf-star Jordan, Amitabh Bachchan shining as gangster Meyer Wolfsheim in a sharp little role, witty as he echoes Gatsby’s deceptions about his folks – “all sadly dead now” – frightening when he shows off the tooth hanging around his neck.

Edgerton begins with OTT-bluster but ends puncturing Gatsby with wounding bluntness. DiCaprio and Edgerton’s duel unpeels the glitter’s ugly core – pre- Depression America was brutally snobbish, ‘old money’ trumping ambitions, everyone romping with corruption, yet few paying.

Luhrmann captures all this from inside a shimmering cocktail glass. His Gatsby is greedily gorgeous and occasionally sags, luxuriating in a 3Dtheatric too many. Still, it showcases Fitzgerald’s drama with flair – a society dancing on a knife’s edge, where everyone drank and romanced too much, but you also heard an odd, wistful sigh – maar daala.

SPOT-FIXING PROBE REACHES DOORSTEP OF BCCI CHIEF’S FAMILY

CHENNAI/MUMBAI (TIP): The IPL fixing scandal has reached the doorstep of Indian cricket’s powerful boss and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) owner N Srinivasan’s family — quite literally. A day after a report about the police investigating Srinivasan’s son-in-law and CSK CEO Gurunath Meiyappan’s phone conversations with Dara Singh’s son Vindu for possible links with a betting syndicate, a fivemember crime branch team from Mumbai arrived in Chennai on May 23 morning to serve summons on Meiyappan.

They first went to the headquarters of Srinivasan-controlled India Cements, and on finding no one there, stuck a copy of the summons on the door before going to Meiyappan’s home around 2pm to instruct him to present himself before the CB between 11am and 5pm within 24 hours. But with no member of the family available to meet the team, they were initially not let in by the guard; after several phone calls, they were allowed into the compound.

Rama Subbu, the chief security officer of India Cements, arrived soon thereafter and was seen signing a paper which the officers handed him. Strangely though, on his way out, he denied having received any summons on behalf of Meiyappan. Later in the evening, the crime branch is reported to have received a one-page fax from Meiyappan saying he was out of town and seeking time till Monday, with the assurance that he would appear in person. A top police officer said night that no decision had been taken on whether to allow him the extra time.

If the police were to reject such a request, which seems unlikely, Meiyappan could be arrested. The whereabouts of the 35-year-old continued to be shrouded in mystery with speculation placing him variously in Kodaikanal (where he has a holiday home), Kolkata (where CSK plays the IPL finals on Sunday against the winners of the Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals match) and Delhi (to prepare his legal defence with top-flight lawyers).

Nor is there any word as to where the BCCI chief might be although New Delhi was abuzz with rumours that he would leverage his considerable clout to counter what his supporters consider a “politicallymotivated conspiracy to discredit him”. On May 16, the day Sreesanth and his two Rajasthan Royals were arrested, Srinivasan had said, “One or two bad eggs cannot sully the game,” before stating, on further questioning, “I hope nobody else is involved, but if information comes to BCCI, we will act immediately.”

I was close to Bhajji, Virat: Vindu Dara Singh MUMBAI (TIP): Vindu Dara Singh has told Mumbai police that he knew several players but was close to Virat Kohli, Harbhajan Singh, and Manpreet Gony. Gony, who now plays for Kings XI Punjab, played one-dayers for India while he was with Chennai Super Kings in 2008. Police said they are yet to come across anything that links the three players to Vindu’s betting racket. Vindu also revealed the names of Bollywood celebrities who bet on IPL matches.

He acted as a middleman, placing bets on their behalf with bookies. He said he came in contact with the betting syndicate several years ago through a friend, Anand Saxena, who introduced him to Ramesh Vyas and Shobhan Mehta, both big bookies. He got to know Sreesanth through Ajit Chandila and some Delhi-based bookies.

    MOVIE REVIEW: The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Cast: Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer
    Sutherland, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi
    Direction: Mira Nair
    Genre: Thriller
    Duration: 2 hours 12 minutes

STORY: The film is a gripping adaptation of Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid’s acclaimed novel on conflicting ideologies and a search for identity, beyond religion.

REVIEW: Can you be who you really are when the world around you forces you to believe otherwise? 9/11 changed the West’s perception of Islam forever. While various films have had the unsettling issue as a backdrop, Mira Nair’s riveting adaptation goes way deeper. Its sensitive yet unsubtle narrative succeeds at retaining the book’s ambiguity, as well as raising pertinent questions on Islamic fundamentalism, emigration and USA’s interference in Pakistan. Nair captures the finer nuances of the thought-provoking tale with great conviction. Hard-working immigrant Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed) is happy living his American dream. Confident and talented, he’s considered as a promising financial analyst at the renowned Wall Street business valuation firm, Underwood Samson. While he’s busy climbing the corporate ladder and finding love in Erica (Hudson), an artist, the twin towers are attacked. As a Muslim in the US, the act of extreme violence not only shatters hopes of Changez’s bright future, but also makes him question his ideologies, objectivity and identity. The beauty of the film lies in the depiction of its protagonist’s unspoken words, suppressed emotions and unwavering beliefs. The incredibly talented Riz Ahmed enables the film to deconstruct the meaning of ‘fundamentalism’, which forms the core of the story. What leaves you in awe of the adapted screenplay is its brilliantly drawn parallels between Changez’s personal, political and social situation. You feel his pain, vulnerability, denial, inner turmoil and psychological conflict. The film keeps you thoroughly engaged, even in parts where the pace drops a bit. While the film is more of a thriller, it doesn’t cease to be a human drama, thanks to sublime supporting performances from Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Meesha Shafi. The music is soulful. Songs like Kangna, Bijli Aaye ya na aaye help build the mood. Cinematography is impressive and in sync with Nair’s trademark style of storytelling. Poignant and relevant, the film will Pakistan differently.

    ANGELINA’S DOC BLOGS MASTECTOMY DETAILS

Angelina Jolie’s doctor has written the details of the actress’ double mastectomy with the aim of helping women understand the preventive treatment. Dr Kristi Funk wrote that just four days after the 37-year-old star underwent her mastectomies, she was pleased to find Jolie in good spirits with bountiful energy, and saw her working with freshly assembled storyboards on her walls for the next movie that she is about to direct, the Guardian reported. Funk asserted in her blog that all the while that Jolie spoke, six drains were dangling from her chest, three on either side, fastened to an elastic belt around her waist.

The Oscar-winner got both her breasts removed on February 16 at the Pink Lotus Breast Centre in Beverly Hills, California, to reduce her breast cancer risk from 87 percent to 5 percent. Despite her fame and constant hounding by media, her treatment remained a secret until Tuesday, when she herself chose to reveal about it in a New York Times article. She approved Funk’s account of her treatment to help women at high cancer risk and to help them understand what is involved if they choose to undergo surgery rather than regular scans and preventive drugs as a way of managing their risk.
