Sanjay Dutt surrenders, goes back to jail
MUMBAI (TIP): Sanjay Dutt on May 16 went back to jail to serve 42 months sentence in the 1993 Bombay blasts case, several hours after he surrendered before a TADA court, abiding by the deadline set by the Supreme Court. The court allowed the actor access to medicines, homefood, fan and take his mattress and pillow during his stay in the jail. The 53-year-old actor was also allowed to take with him copies of Bhagwad Gita, Ramayan and Hanuman Chalisa besides his toiletries including toothpaste, shampoo, slippers, kurta, pyjama and mosquito repellants. However, TADA Judge G A Sanap rejected Dutt’s request for an electronic cigarette (Dutt is a chain smoker). Instead, the judge advised him to quit smoking.
Capping another phase in the Bollywood actor’s chequered life, Dutt drove to the court in South Mumbai in the afternoon accompanied by his wife Manyata, sister and Congress MP Priya and brother-in-law Owen Roncon. He was sent to the Arthur Road Central Prison by court after completion of formalities, which took several hours. He may be shifted soon to the Yerwada jail in Pune. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt also came along with the Dutt family in their car but did not come up to the court. Besides Dutt, four other convicts – Essa Memon, Kersi Adjania, Yusuf Nulwala and Altaf Shaikh – also surrendered to serve their remaining jail term.
Police kept a tight vigil outside Dutt’s residence at Pali Hill in upscale suburban Bandra, where fans in large numbers had gathered since morning, and also in the court premises in the wake of threats to his life. While Dutt had told the court earlier that he faced threats to his life from fundamental forces, Arthur Road jail in Central Mumbai had received an anonymous letter stating the popular actor would be harmed if he was lodged there. A large group of people, that also comprised media persons and photographers, surrounded the car in which the actor arrived, not allowing him to get down. Bhatt emerged from the vehicle and appealed to the media with folded hands to move away so that Dutt could go to the court.
Finally, the way was cleared. A visibly shaken Dutt, sporting a red ‘tikka’ on his forehead, entered the court at 2.50 pm with his family members. He was wearing a white crisp ‘kurta’ and blue jeans. The actor bowed down before the judge who asked him to mention his name, to which he replied “Sanjay Sunil Dutt”. He was then asked about the sentence undergone by him (after his arrest in 1993) and he replied promptly “551 days in jail, Sir”. The judge then asked him to go to the dock in the back row of the Court and take his seat. Manyata, Priya and Roncon followed Dutt and sat with him on the same bench. Manyata held Dutt’s hand and both seemed to console each other. Dutt’s lawyer also urged the court to allow the visits of the family members on a regular basis. He also requested that the actor may not be given harsh jobs in the prison.
Advocate Merchant later said the actor was planning to file a curative petition in the Supreme Court. Earlier, Dutt’s Bollywood friends visited him at his residence. These included actors Salman Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Ajay Devgun; directors David Dhavan, Sanjay Gupta and Apporva Lakhia, Rajkumar Hirani and Milan Luthria and film makers Vashu Bhagnani, Bhushan Kumar and Rahul Agarwal. Dutt had earlier urged the special judge to allow him to surrender at Yerwada jail in Pune instead of the court here.
However, he withdrew his plea abruptly yesterday. The Supreme Court, on March 21 this year, upheld Dutt’s conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. However, the apex court had reduced to five years the six-year jail term awarded by TADA court, and ruled out release on probation, saying the “nature” of his offence was “serious”. Dutt has already spent 18 months in jail, so he has another three and half years to serve.
The actor was convicted by the TADA court for illegally possessing a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle, a part of the consignment of weapons and explosives brought to India for coordinated serial blasts that killed 257 people and injured over 700 in March 1993. The apex court had on May 14 refused to grant him more time to surrender. On May 10, the Supreme Court had also dismissed Dutt’s plea seeking review of its judgement. Tonight, at about 9.45 pm, Dutt stepped into Arthur Road Jail in Central Mumbai where he is likely to spend at least two days, before being possibly shifted to the Pune jail.

Bipasha Wants To Attain Fit Body For ‘Creature’star
Actress Bipasha Basu, who will next feature in an athletic avatar in Vikram Bhatt’s “Creature”, has taken to the TRX Rip trainer, a portable training tool, to develop a toned physique for the film. TRX Rip trainer is a huge fad in Singapore and the 34-year-old feels that the tool will help her in attaining a “leaner and toned” body.
“I saw TRX Rip training in Singapore and I bought it. I will start shooting for my thriller ‘Creature’ from June and I need a particular kind of body for the film. I have to be much leaner and toned. I had put on a little weight for my last film ‘Aatma’ and need to lose that,” Bipasha said in a statement. “Rip Training utilizes a lever bar and resistance cord that challenges the body in all three planes of motion – reps, sets and workout.
It utilizes the same asymmetrical loading we encounter every day, like carrying groceries, picking up your child, throwing a ball, or performing athletic movements such as swimming, running, and biking,” she added. The actress also feels that “‘Creature’ requires a lot of physical work hence she needs to be fit”. “I need another couple of weeks to get to the shape I want to achieve,”

But I will do item songs once I am really convinced. It should not be less than ‘Balma’, in which I danced with Akshay,” she said here during a photo shoot. “If I will get excited about a project…then I really won’t mind doing an item song,” she added.
Making her entry into Indian showbiz with third season of reality show “Bigg Boss”, Claudia was recently seen doing stand-up comedy in Sony TV’s show “Comedy Circus”.

MOVIE REVIEW – Aashiqui 2
Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor
Direction: Mohit Suri
Genre: Romance
Duration: 2 hours 13 minutes
STORY: A fading singing sensation finds new purpose in life when he falls in love with a talented singing aspirant. But the blitzkrieg of stardom makes, breaks and shakes their love story.MOVIE REVIEW: He sings. She sings. He, for his stardom. She, for her supper. And the twain meet. In a restrobar, where she croons and he swoons. And Aashiqui is born. Again! Retelling the celebrity story that stardom ain’t an easy ride. It sometimes vrooms and then goes sputter, the fuel of celebdom often running out. Like Rahul Jaykar (Aditya) discovers; once basking in a ‘rockstar’ like status, but soon losing it to alcohol, addiction and self-deprecation.
But when he meets budding singer Aarohi (Shraddha), his heart finds a new beat and his crumbling life finds a cause. He trains her to become the Nightingale of India; she shines while he stays her shadow; sometimes sober, mostly stoned. The real lyric of this story is their romance, pulsating with passion and intensity – on high notes and ‘higher spirits’.
Suri’s musical love story doesn’t bear much semblance to the original ‘Aashiqui’; instead it finds its own rhythm. He pitches the story with old-world romance, high-drama and well-crafted heart-breaking moments. Aarohi’s character is endearing and Rahul stays ‘bottled’ (like ‘Devdas’ with a cause), with sudden outbursts.
The story slows down in parts and the climax might seem unreal to many, but maybe a ‘fix’ for die-hard aashiqs. Aditya is likeable in mushy moments, he shows intensity in flashes but sometimes loses grip. A mature role like this demands a lot, nonetheless, it’s a good effort. Shraddha looks innocently beautiful. Letting her emotions play out brilliantly in high-strung scenes with supreme confidence.
This is a talent to look out for. The jodi’s palpable chemistry heightens the drama. The music is the strongest supporting cast, with captivating tunes like Tum Hi Ho (Arijit Singh), Sunn Raha Hai (Ankit Tiwari) and Bhula Dena (Mustafa Zahid) pouring more passion in to the story. This could be good soup for the lovers’ soul – with a dash of old-world flavour.

MOVIE REVIEW – MUD
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Tye
Sheridan, Jacob Lofland
Direction: Jeff Nichols
Genre: Drama
Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes
STORY: Two friends meet a man hiding out in the woods who’s on the run. They help him try and escape to freedom and to reunite with his lady love.MOVIE REVIEW: Ellis ( Tye Sheridan) and his best friend Neckbone ( Jacob Lofland) are a 21st century Huckleberry Finn-style duo. They ride scooters, fish, sail, know every inch of their Arkansas hometown and even find a secret hideaway on an island – a boat stuck atop a tree! But their island idyll and the boat have an inhabitant. His name is Mud. Tattooed, superstitious, dishevelled and packing a .45 calibre, Mud (McConaughey) tells the boys that he’s a fugitive, dodging bounty-hunting assassins. He’s also trying to trace his girl Juniper (Witherspoon, oozing sex appeal) who’s a hoochie gal with a soft heart for bad boys.
Mud makes a deal with the two – he offers Neck his .45 in return for food. Intrigued and charmed in equal measure, the boys agree. But is Mud a man worth helping? Is he a good guy caught between a rock and a hard place or a scoundrel with no scruples, who plays the sympathy card well? A grizzled Sam Shephard – a deadshot with a sniper rifle – knows Mud since childhood and warns the kids about him. But Ellis, who’d like to see Mud and Juniper reunite, and Neck, the deadpan-delivery voice of reason, pay no heed.
A coming-of-age story with more than a few moments of menace, the film’s languid pace matches the humid atmosphere of the Mississippi delta setting. The visuals are amazing, with a tinge of surrealism. The cinematography is lush and the dialogues deftly delivered. The Southern folks embody values like trust, a good work ethic, honesty and loyalty. Ellis is, however, the true hero of this film.

VIDYA BALAN: CANNES I PULL IT OFF IN A SAREE?
Anxious Vidya calls up Sabya to work out a slam-proof look for her Red Carpet stint. On April 24 morning, Vidya Balan was chosen to be a part of the nine-member jury, headed by Steven Spielberg, at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The actress, who was busy shooting for a special song at Filmalaya studio for Ghanchakkar, did not have enough time to field media queries about the honour. But she did have time to make that one very critical call: to the man who has turned her into the biggest brand ambassador of the saree, Sabyasachi.
Given that Vidya has never had an easy relationship with the fashion police, and how the Cannes red carpet comes under the severest scrutiny, sources close to the actress say she has been quite anxious about her high-profile appearance. When she called Sabya with a mix of excitement and apprehension, the feeling was mutual. A friend of the actress said: “Sabyasachi is very excited to be a part of Vidya’s big moment.
They have become thick friends over the years and Vidya trusts the designer blindly when it comes to designing her sarees. However, Sabya is a bit nervous this time, as he doesn’t want anything to go wrong on the red carpet.” The designer called up Nisha Kundnani, an independent stylist who has worked with Aamir and Kiran Rao in the past. A source added: “Sabya requested Nisha to carry alternative options for Vidya, in case there were last-minute changes.”

I Don’t Want To Do Glamorous Roles: Mallika Sherawat
Mallika Sherawat may be known for her bold roles and glamorous item numbers but the actress now wants to do performance-oriented films. “Now I want to do performanceoriented roles. I don’t want to do glamorous roles and item songs. It is a conscious decision that I have taken. I do get lots of offers for item songs and glam roles but it is a deliberate choice not to do it,” she said.
In an image overhaul, Mallika will be seen in a complete desi avatar in her upcoming film ‘Dirty Politics’, where she essays the role of Anokhi Devi, based on Jodhpur’s Bhanwari Devi, who was killed under mysterious circumstances after her alleged relationship with politicians. The film directed by KC Bokadia, stars Om Puri, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Ashutosh Rana in key roles. In her last release ‘Kismat Love Paisa Dilli’, she played the role of a girl-next-door. The film bombed at the box office.
Despite having starred in Bollywood films like ‘Murder’, ‘Bachke Rehna Re Baba’, ‘Pyar Ke Side Effects’, ‘Welcome’, ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ among others, it’s Mallika’s item numbers that have kept her on the film map. Also, there were reports that Mallika had moved to Los Angeles to focus on a Hollywood career but she denies it. “I have not moved to LA. It is not true that I have shifted my base there. I was doing a movie ‘Politics of Love’ hence I went there but that was only for shooting. Apart from that I do go for parties and socialdos,” she said.

India protests questioning of UP minister at Boston airport
NEW DELHI (TIP): India has formally protested to the US the brief detention of Uttar Pradesh urban development minister Mohammad Azam Khan at Boston airport as he arrived to take part in an event at Harvard University. Khan, who is accompanying UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav for the presentation of a Harvard study on the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage, was detained for about 10 minutes for “further questioning” at Boston Logan International Airport Wednesday, according to Indian officials.
Once the visitors were cleared for entry by immigration, a woman officer of the US Customs and Border Protection wing of the Homeland Security took Khan to an adjacent room “for further questioning,” sources said. Incensed, Khan is reported to have kicked up a ruckus in the immigration area saying he was detained because he was a Muslim and sought an apology from the officer who merely said she was doing her duty.
As arguments became heated, officials from the Indian consulate in New York intervened and Khan was escorted out of the airport. In Washington, Indian embassy spokesman M Sridharan said the mission has “taken up the issue with the State Department officially and we have conveyed our serious concern.” “We have asked them to intervene and take appropriate measures to avoid recurrence in the future.” At the State Department, when asked to comment on the incident, spokesman Patrick Ventrell said he was “not aware of the specifics of this case” as the Department of Homeland Security has jurisdiction over airport movements inside the US.
But “I do want to underscore that we have a very important bilateral relationship with India and a very robust and thorough diplomatic exchange with our partners, he said. “We very much value our partnership with the Government of India.” The Azam Khan case is the latest instance of Indian VIPs being detained at US airports. Last year, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was detained for over two hours by immigration officials at a New York airport. Former President A P J Abdul Kalam was twice subjected to frisking at New York’s JFK Airport by US security officials. India’s then ambassador to the US Meera Shanker was patted down by a security agent in Mississippi in December 2010.

Aamir Khan’s Possible Rendezvous With Us President Obama
NEW YORK (TIP): The perfectionist actor of Bollywood, Aamir Khan is scheduled to visit the USA and there is a strong possibility that he will meet with President Barak Obama here. Earlier in the year, the President had visited India. In a dinner given by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, graced by some of the leading dignitaries of our country, was Aamir Khan who met with President and Mrs. Obama at the affair.
It was reported that the power couple was all praise for the actor. President Obama had even extended an invitation to Aamir to come to America to promote his films while it was no secret that Michelle Obama was seen recently dancing to one of the tunes from Aamir’s film ‘Rang de Basanti’. Aamir was full of praise for the president as well and his dynamic leadership. He also expressed his honor at being part of such an exclusive affair.
In an interview to a national daily, Aamir said “It was a real honor to be part of such a distinguished gathering. It was a very dignified and tasteful affair. I was seated on the same table as Vishwanathan Anand, who I am a big fan of. Mr. Obama sent his regards to Kiran and said, `Tell her we missed her`. And Michelle Obama told me that she really enjoyed dancing to my song from Rang De Basanti.” Millions of fans of Aamir eagerly await the new movie which he brings out every year. The actor is currently shooting for Dhoom 3. However, it was late last year when Aamir made his debut on television with the show ‘Satyamev Jayate’. He has become one of the best known faces of social campaign from the world of art and entertainment.
Acknowledging his huge role in social movement, Aamir was recently featured on the Times cover in a list for 100 most influential people in the world. This was one of the seven special covers launched by the Times magazine. In addition to Aamir, other noted Indians who made the list include Mr. P. Chidambaram, the finance minister, Delhi based lawyer Vrinda Grover Kamala Harris, the Indian American attorney General of California. Aamir will take a 3 day break from his shooting to fly to attend a celebratory dinner in New York. President Obama is also supposed to attend the event. So, chances are, Aamir will meet with the US President again in near future.

Kangana Stopped By Dacoits In Chambal
Kangana Ranaut, who was shooting in the Chambal Valley for her next film, Revolver Rani, almost had an encounter with the dacoits that the area is (in) famous for. The actress was returning to Gwalior with the film’s director, Sai Kabir, and the crew in a convoy of about four-five cars and a police van, when they were stopped by about 12-15 men armed with guns and knives, says our source.
We’re told that the dacoits wanted Kangana to pose for pictures with them and refused to let her car pass. However, Kabir managed to reason with them and succeeded.
Kabir says, “I have lived in that area for over 15 years. So, while I was expecting trouble, we managed to get out of it smoothly. The place is famous for guns and dacoits fire them without any reason. There was a little argument with the dacoits, but Kangana didn’t meet or shoot pictures with them.
We had a police van for our security and in this area, even a constable has a machine gun.” To avoid any further altercation with the dacoits, Kabir says he called his MLA friend Rakesh Chaudhary. “We waited for about half-an-hour at his place, before he and his security personnel escorted us to Gwalior,” recalls the director, adding, “We had strict instructions not to shoot after 5.30 pm and we would return to Gwalior daily. Even male actors would have reservations about shooting in Chambal, but Kangana didn’t have any apprehensions.”

Paltrow Most-Hated Celeb In Hollywood
Gwyneth Paltrow probably has plenty of fans, but it seems the blonde beauty has even more haters as she has topped the list of the 20 Most Hated Celebrities in Hollywood.

Movie Review-Oblivion
Cast: Tom Cruise, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman
Direction: Joseph Kosinski
Genre: Sci-Fi
Duration: 2 hours 5 minutes
STORY: Earth is destroyed while repelling an alien invasion. 60 years later, Jack (Tom Cruise) a drone repairman, is assigned to a nuclear-ravaged earth to save humanity. He patrols the wrecked planet and kills alien scavengers. However, a few recurring dreams make him question his mission and identity.MOVIE Review: Assisting Jack is Vika ( Andrea Riseborough) who monitors his activities and sends help. The two hope to emigrate the humans left on earth to Titan (Saturn’s moon) for mankind to survive. However, random memory flashes of a woman ( Olga Kurylenko) in pre-war New York leave Jack pondering his past.
Oblivion is not your video game-esque, fast-paced scifi action film which offers cheap thrills. It’s a profound, cerebral drama which focuses on Jack’s inner journey and his relentless search for identity.
In spite of Joseph Kosinski’s unhurried approach towards the film’s buildup, he manages to keep you thoroughly engaged, thanks to brilliant production design and clever imagination. Spectacular images of planetary ruin, ravaged surfaces, barren landscapes, floating houses on the clouds, futuristic aircrafts, powerful drones and the strength of a complex restless mind, Oblivion manages to capture the beauty of it all with astounding reality. In terms of story-telling, the film stays unpredictable, thus convincing us to patiently wait as the mystery unfolds, even when it feels a tad directionless at times.
Like a novel, the film stays unputdownable till the end. After Jack Reacher, ‘I-want-to-be-versatile’ Tom Cruise once again slips into a role which does not require his trademark charm or good looks and succeeds better this time as the role doesn’t require him to be stoic either. Cruise displays the inner turmoil of his character brilliantly, in spite of not having any memorable dialogues at his disposal. Unfortunately, Morgan Freeman is wasted.
Oblivion is primarily a great visual experience. The mystifying sombreness of a post-apocalyptic earth has been captured brilliantly.
