Pamela Anderson Set To Sizzle On Ice Dancing Show

Come January – ‘Dancing On Ice’ will be bringing all sorts of glittery fun to the screen, as Pamela Anderson will officially star on the show, it has been announced. Olympic skating superstars Torville and Dean will once again drag 12 celebrity contestants up onto the ice in an attempt to teach them to shuffle their feet to a tune, with those shuffles turning into steps, and those steps turning into leaps.

Following in the footsteps of previous winners Matthew Wolfenden, Sam Attwater, Hayley Tamaddon, Ray Quinn, Suzanne Shaw, Kyran Bracken and Gaynor Faye, this year’s celebrity line up is actually pretty impressive, with the former ‘Baywatch’ star, Lauren Goodger and Shayne Ward among those on the official line up, the Mirror reported. With Jason Gardiner back on the judging panel, the 2013 bunch will have to be extra careful as they kick off in the first live show – because the former bald man has promised to be meaner than ever.

India Visit A Memorable Experience For Naomi Watts

Actress Naomi Watts, who has got her first Golden Globe nomination for “The Impossible”, not only enjoyed sightseeing and shopping during her India visit, but was also impressed by the “strength and determination” of HIV mothers whom she met in the capital. She visited the country with her husband Liev Schreiber last year. “In Rajasthan, I visited Jal Mahal. It was so beautiful. I was awestruck. The beauty of the terrace garden, Chameli Bagh, was enthralling. I also shopped for Jaipuri quilts from Chaura Rasta in Jaipur.

My mother and both my children, Kai and Sasha, had a great time,” Watts said in a statement. Schreiber was shooting in the capital for Mira Nair’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” and the 44-year-old actress also visited a hospital here, where she met a few HIV mothers. “The hospital staff welcomed me warmly,” she said.

Talking about her interaction with the mothers there, Watts said: “My heart went out to them. I could see their struggles and challenges that they faced. But what moved me was their strength and determination to raise a healthy child. I have great respect for them.” In “The Impossible”, the actress will be seen as a mother who is separated from her family during tsunami. It is based on real life tsunami survivor Maria Belon.

  • World Kabaddi Cup a Step in the Right Direction

World Kabaddi Cup a Step in the Right Direction

The ancient game of Kabaddi is enshrined permanently in the mind of every son of the soil Punjabi. In olden times, it used to be played on the dusty grounds of village common land. There used to be no hard and fast rules of the game. Sometimes the raiders indulged in tactical cheating during chanting of words “Kabaddi Kabaddi” or “Kaudi Kaudi”. In Punjabi style one raider was the attacker and one defender used to stop him. A deliberate touch by a raider targeting two attackers resulted in the point going to the defenders. In a reverse situation, if two stoppers tried to stop the raider one after the other or simultaneously, the point went to the raider.

Throwing the opponent, raider or defender, out of the ground resulted in a point. This has always been the game of strength, stamina, lung power and agility on the part of the raiders and the defenders. Prior to the independence of India, this game was quite popular in all the five administrative divisions of the Province of Punjab. It was more popular in Lahore and Jalandhar divisions and least popular in Ambala division.

But now it is popular all over the Indian Punjab and is played equally passionately across the Radcliffe Line in Pakistan’s Punjab. Needing just a pair of shorts and not even requiring formal shoes, this used to be and still is a very inexpensive game. But in order to stay physically fit, the player has to be given strength and stamina building diet and exercise. In olden times a lot of stress was laid on eating butter.

This culture still prevails, but now some of the athletes are eating a lot more diverse diet. During the nineteen fifties, a lot of Sikh youths settled in the United Kingdom. At about the same time and a decade and two later, Sikh Diaspora spread to Canada also. These expatriate Sikhs passionately love Kabaddi. When they visit their ancestral homes in India, they want to see Kabaddi being played in their respective villages. In order to see that they spend quite a considerable amount of money to arrange Kabaddi tournaments in their mostly non-descript villages. These impromptu tournaments have become very popular in the rural areas of the Punjab.

In the last two decades there were hundreds of such tournaments held in villages all across Punjab during the six month window from October to April. As the game is flourishing, rules are also getting defined and enforced meticulously. Now the raider has to return to the dividing line in half a minute. Crossing to one’s own side after touching a defender at any spot, other than the designated return line, results in a point being awarded to the defender.

Slapping the opponent, raider or the defender, results in point being awarded to the opponent. Sensing the enormous popularity of Kabaddi, the Punjab Government in India decided to embrace it. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal started the first edition of World Kabaddi Cup in 2010 in a grand style. The matches were held over several venues all over the Punjab. Kabaddi is now played regularly in Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. India won the inaugural cup and a handsome amount of money.

The tournament was telecast by PTC TV channel all over India and in several countries, where PTC’s footprint exists. Last year (2011) saw more teams participating. Nice arrangements were made for board and lodging of the teams. Italy was a surprise entry into the semifinal. Several players from the United States and the Canadian teams were disqualified after being found positive in dope tests. In addition to men, several women’s teams were also invited to participate. This created gender equality in this hitherto rural sport. India had a decisive edge in women’s group. In the year 2012, the “Third World Cup Kabaddi Tournament” was held from the first to the 15th of December. The matches were spread in several locations all over the state.

A glittering several hours long opening ceremony was held in Bathinda on December 1st. The other venues included the holy and premier tourist city of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Chohla Sahib (Tarntaran), Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Mansa, Sangrur, Ropar, Bathinda and Ludhiana. In the men’s category in addition to the host nation India, Argentina, the USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Norwey, Italy, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand and Srilanka accepted the invitation to participate.

In the women’s section, USA, Canada, England, Denmark, Malaysia, Turkmenistan and India participated. Nepal eventually failed to show up for the matches. The winning team in men’s section in 2012 was offered two crore of rupees and the runners-up team was offered a prize of one crore of rupees. The team finishing at number three was offered half a crore of rupees. These are indeed huge prizes unseen in the history of the game. There have been some problems in the organizational structure of the tournament.

The buildings of the stadiums are quite good, but the playing fields left much to be desired. Barring a couple of stadiums in Amritsar and Ludhiana, rest of the playing fields were devoid of a decent grass cover and the soil was very hard. Kabaddi players in the European and American countries are used to play on lush green grass turfs. When they are made to play on hard dry soil, their performance level suffers. That is one reason as to why the Canadian and the American teams could not perform to their capacity.

The teams that entered the semifinal included three teams from Asia. These are Iran, Pakistan and India. The fourth qualifier was the Canadian team. The team from the USA was narrowly beaten by Iran. Both India and Pakistan toyed with their semifinalist rivals. Indian crushed Iran and Pakistan mauled team Canada. In the women’s group also the competition in 2012 was of a much higher level. The Canadian and the Malaysian teams consisted of mostly players of Indian descent. The out of practice Canadian girls played poorly, but the hard working Malaysians covered themselves with glory and entered the final. Two European teams, the English and the Denmark teams also were impressive. Turkmenistan team was very good too. But the Indian players were outstanding.

This successfully conducted tournament is likely to boost the economy of Punjab. A lot of tourists have been visiting the state to watch this tournament. Some of the participating teams are staying behind in Punjab to play in several village level tournaments to be held in the months of December and January. The two African teams Kenya and Sierra Leone are also staying behind to get more match practice and to master the finer points of the game.

Both finals and the grand closing ceremony were held in the multipurpose Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana on the night of Saturday December 15th. In the men’s final India crushed arch rivals Pakistan by 59 points to 22. Canada crushed Iran on December 13th in Jalandhar to win the third place and a prize of one hundred thousand dollars. In the final of women’s category on December 15th, in a one sided encounter India toyed with Malaysia.

The third place in women’s group was won by Denmark by defeating England on December 13th. This was a very closely contested match. The young school and college going girls from Denmark impressed everyone. The dazzling closing ceremony was dominated by the film industry of Bollywood. Katrina Kaif was the star of the night. Film and pop singers Diljit Singh and Sukhvinder Singh kept the jam-packed stadium entertained. Punjab’s most popular TV anchor Satinder Satti was the master of ceremony. In the end there was an impressive show of fireworks. At the end the flame was extinguished, with a promise to hold another edition in 2013. Katrina Kaif and troupe entertain at one of the venues

kareena to prep up for Prakash Jha’s film

Every director who has worked with the camera-friendly Kareena Kapoor knows she is a slip-in-slip-out actress who doesn’t believe in preparing for her characters. That is about to change.

For the first time in her career Kareena Kapoor would be follwing an elaborate preparation plan for Prakash Jha’s Satyagrah. Most of our actresses are not well-informed on current political trends.

That’s about to change. Kareena Kapoor will have to get into her journalist-activist’s character’s mind for Satyagrah.

Playing a character modelled on CNN’s super-scribe Christiane Amanpour is not going to be a cakewalk for Kareena Kapoor. Prakash Jha, we hear, has worked out out a gruelling regime for Kareena which includes “getting into the mind” of the activistjournalist. Says a source close to the project, “Kareena would have to become thoroughly familiar with presentday political affairs .And that doesn’t mean just newspaper headlines. Prakash wants her to become sensitized to India’s contemporary politics. Her character is a fiercely militant investigative journalist.

For her too look credible Parkash feels the words about present day politics and politicians should not come from the script.

They should flow naturally from the actress’ sensitivities as an Indian .” Apparently Kareena’s preparation for the part would include going through the rigorous research material that Prakash Jha has accumulated for Kareena’s character.

‘Race 2’ has been most challenging: Jacqueline Fernandez

Actress Jacqueline Fernandez considers ” Race 2″ as her most challenging film and says a lot of hard work has gone into it. “It is the most negative character I have played. It is very challenging to do something like that. I had to tackle each scene with an underlying thought that the character is concealing a deep dark secret. Every character is dark and that is the beauty of the film,” she said in an interview.

“It is a nice change. It’s something new to try. It was very challenging. To be this evil person and be negative, you have to work on yourself,” she added. Comparing “Race 2” to her previous hit “Housefull 2”, Jaqueline said: “‘Housefull 2’ was like a walk in the park. It was fun, everyone was having a good time. Everything was spontaneous. ‘Race 2’ is more calculative, you have to rehearse. You need to understand that certain messages need to be sent to the audience. So ‘Race 2’ was most challenging.”

  • Movie Review: Khiladi 786

    Movie Review: Khiladi 786

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Asin, Himesh Reshammiya, Mithun Chakraborty, Raj Babbar
    Direction: Ashish R Mohan
    Genre: Action
    Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes

STORY: Akela hai Mr. Khiladi, Ms. Khiladi chahiye. It’s that simple, really.

MOVIE REVIEW: Barah baras baad, Khiladi ka number aa gaya. Bollywood’s original Khiladi is back from selfimposed exile; still with a heart of gold, the pride of a true-blooded Singh and mighty-muscles of steel.

And of course, a truck-load of even more Singhs – welcome the players. But before we lose count, let’s ‘count’ the global Singhs – each of them with a Number for a name.

To start with, Bahattar (read: 72) Singh, aka Khiladi bhaiyya ( Akshay Kumar), his father Sattar Singh ( Raj Babbar) with his Canadian wife and African mother. Add on Ikhattar Singh ( Mukesh Rishi) and his Chinese wife.

Just in case you realize number 73 is missing, keep guessing. The Singhs are a family of proud con-cops (partly for a cause), and while 72 Singh can single-handedly thrash thugs at supersonic speed, he believes in driving women around in what he calls a mardon ki sawaari – a vibrantly colourful truck – on date nights.

No wonder, matrimonial rejects are aplenty (everyone wants a sawaari in a Ferrari, you see) and Khiladi bhaiyya is left ‘lonely-lonely’, with little or no action in his love life.

Enter Mansukh Desai (Himesh) a weddingfixer, who takes on the challenge of finding a girl to match his machismo. And he finds one in the feisty Indu Tendulkar (Asin) – Mumbai’s wanted don, TT’s (Mithun) sister. Well, she turns out to be nothing short of a psycho baiko, in love with a parttime- prisoner called Azad. Akshay is in his top-form, his punches are as powerpacked as his one-liners.

With kurtas as colourful as his character, nonchalant charm and playful references to recent hits (Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2, Singham), he proves to be sabse bada khiladi, yet again. Asin has, without a doubt, looked her best in this film.

As Ms. Khiladi, she’s pulled out a few guns, stepped on the gas (crashing and speeding up cars) and romanced her balma. Mithun, dons the role of goonda, but with his funny liners, he leaves us with a lot of laughs. Himesh is decent as a caricature-ish Gujju boy.

Lea Michele boasts about her tendency to don cleavage-baring ensembles on the red carpet, admitting that it took some time during her transition from Broadway star to up-and-coming Hollywood actress before she felt comfortable enough to show off her assets. Now that the ‘Glee’ star has found her footing in Hollywood, the actress is much more comfortable with getting things off her chest. “These babies are great.

They are my prizewinners,” the New York Daily News quoted her as telling Marie Claire magazine. “For a while they were out and about, showing off on Broadway every night, then they came to LA and were like, ‘No one else looks like me here!’ “They were nervous to make their appearance but feel they’ve earned their place. So they asked if they could come out, and I was like, ‘All right, you guys.’ They definitely rose to the occasion, so I’m going to continue to give them more opportunities,” she said.

    Movie Review Playing for Keeps

Cast: Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Dennis Quaid, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Noah Lomax, Judy Greer
    Direction: Gabriele Muccino
    Genre: Romantic Comedy
    Duration: 1 hour 48 minutes

STORY: A former soccer star intends to win over his exwife and son but ends up charming the single mothers of the kids he coaches!

MOVIE REVIEW: With his dashing good looks and expertise in soccer, George (Gerard Butler)has a way with women. While almost every second woman throws herself at the former Scottish soccer star, his heart is reserved for ex-wife Stacie (Jessica Biel) only. However, George’s bad timing and bad luck when it comes to finances and certain crucial decisions leads to their separation. Stacie finds herself a new boyfriend and son Lewis learns to live with the fact that his dad may never be around for him.

Hoping for a reconciliation, George decides to get his act right. He tries to redeem himself by meeting the expectations of his estranged family. He starts with coaching and mentoring his son’s football team. Although, as luck or bad luck would have it, he ends up charming the hotshot single mothers of the kids instead! Will Stacie forgive her smokin’ hot husband and take him back? Playing for Keeps is a decent one-time watch only for the very gorgeous Gerard Butler.

The film not only revolves around but also depends solely on his ‘sex appeal’ and it scores there. On the flipside, the rom-com/chick-flick is way too formulaic, cliched and predictable for your liking. Various women get cozy with George but there is no surprise element as to who gets him. There is no drama or twists andturns to the story. You don’t sympathize with poor chick-magnet George.

A lack of depth to the characters makes you feel indifferent towards them. The bonding between the father and son is not explored much either. Jessica Biel as Stacie is your typical judgemental wife who plays hard to get. She has few dialogues and scenes. Uma Thurman, Dennis Quaid, Judy Greer and Catherine Zeta-Jones have insignificant roles too. Gerard Butler fits the bill as a studly but vulnerable soccer star. He however falls short of evoking emotions in scenes which require that.

    Race 2 wins over Deepika

She has taken a break from Ye Jawaani… and Ram Leela to promote the Abbas-Mustan thriller Deepika Padukone, who had famously walked out of Abbas-Mustan’s Race 2 citing date issues, is now using the film as a reason to take a break from both Ayaan Mukerji’s Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela.

It is learnt the two projects she is shooting for simultaneously, will have to be put on hold because she is taking time off in January to promote Abbas-Mustan’s film.

Next month, she will travel to different parts of the world to promote the multi-starrer. A source close to Deepika confirmed the news and said, “She will be occupied for the most part of January promoting Race 2. That is why she requested Ayaan and Bhansali to let her go for some time. Ayaan and Bhansali were not too amused but they relented.” Seems that the makers of Race 2 have happily left the past behind

Priyanka is keen to do a film with Salman

Priyanka Chopra seems to be making no effort to hide her growing fondness for Salman Khan. Reportedly, the two continued to bond big time in Dubai, where they performed for a show the other night.

Interestingly, Priyanka is very keen to do a film with Salman. And according to industry sources, the actress is not only giving an open date diary to do a movie with her current favorite star, but it’s also believed that she’s even willing to negotiate her market fee for the movie. Of late, all Salman films have had at least a couple of hit songs
    .
So, that’s an added advantage for Priyanka as she can use them to perform at award shows the following year. And that will surely bring her more moolah than what she foregoes to work in a film with Salman.

  • Movie Review:Talaash

    Movie Review:Talaash

Cast: Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor,
    Nawazuddin Siddiqui
    Direction: Reema Kagti
    Genre: Thriller
    Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes

STORY: Surjan Singh Shekhawat who has been entrusted the task of solving a high-profile murder case of a film star is up against a dead-end. Will he, won’t he be able to take the case to a natural conclusion?

MOVIE REVIEW: Talaash belongs to the genre of cinema noir of which there are few examples in recent times. This film is a good attempt at revisiting suspense flicks that were a huge craze in the 50-60s. To bring Gen- Now up to speed, back then movies like CID, Mera Saya, Woh Kaun Thi weaved magic on celluloid for patrons back then. But, make no mistake here. Though, Talaash has the mystique of the cinema Raj Khosla; it is modern in its approach and the setting is contemporary. The plot revolves around a bizarre high profile death of a movie star Armaan Kapoor (Vivaan Bhatena). Aamir Khan (Surjan Singh Shekhawat) is the cop in charge of the case.

The clues lead him to Mumbai’s red-light area where he jostles between pimps and prostitutes looking for answers. It’s also revealed that Surjan is married to Roshni (Rani Mukerji).

But he is like a man possessed on the job because of a sensitive incident in his life. In a bid to bury his head in the sand and escape his personal demons, he directs all his energies into his khaki uniform. Coming to the Armaan Kapoor case, vital clues keep taking him to a working girl called Rosie (Kareena Kapoor).

Between piecing the mystery together, the cop and the call-girl, develop a relationship that goes slightly beyond the regular. In the performance department, Aamir Khan should pat himself on his back for a superlative act; he’s a powerhouse, flawless from frame one to 10. This superstar-actor should also be lauded for raising the bar in his choice of films and roles, unlike many of his contemporaries who neither have the inclination nor the capacity to move away from the ‘mould’ they have been typecast in.

Rani Mukerji is one of the finest actresses of this generation. In Talaash she is effortless in her part of a wife in a strife ridden marriage and a mother who has faced a tragedy. Kareena Kapoor looks lovely and sits pretty in her hooker act, going from coy to brazen like a pro. Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Taimur) has an interesting role as a street-savvy chai-serving sidekick in the flesh bazaar.

Again, this is one actor, whose potential Bollywood is discovering slowly but surely. Ram Sampath’s music haunts-especially Muskaanein jhooti hai and Jiya lage na . Farhan Akhtar’s dialogue has fire.

But the story written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti oscillates between real and implausible; making it hard for the screenplay to bridge the gap, especially in some key portions in the second half. At time the pace also numbs you making you shift in your seat. But if you average it out, Talaash is well-worth the price of a ticket.

Bollywood Biggies Wax Eloquent in Washington

WASHINGTON (TIP): India’s growing soft power has got a brief toehold in the world’s hardball capital. Madame Tussauds, the famed wax gallery, unveiled on Tuesday the moulded likeness of Bollywood’s best in an intensely political city that is more into power than entertainment. For the next few weeks, a cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Hritik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor will rub shoulders with 43 US Presidents and dozens of American celebrity journalists and sportsmen at the popular gallery, among the newest of 14 Madame Tussaud’s museums around the world. They will then go to New York, Las Vegas, and Hollywood.

It’s the first time that Bollywood stars have made a waxy entry into the US, although they come here often enough in flesh and blood. America is now the second largest Bollywood market outside India, and gallery officials explained that Indian visitors to their attraction had voted through visitor logs and guest feedback a desire to see their favourite desi movie stars. An in-house panel chose the five most popular stars through such feedback. The Indian movie industry, commonly arrogated to Bollywood, is at the centre of India’s much-ballyhooed soft power, a term coined by US political scientist Joseph Nye to describe persuasive diplomacy through the arts, culture, entertainment and other “soft” elements rather than hard military power projection. Although Bollywood’s revenues of around $2 billion annual is a fraction of the nearly $70 billion Hollywood rakes in, its footprint is as large as its American counterpart because it sells more tickets worldwide even if revenue per capita is lower.

At the surreal Madame Tussauds, a few blocks from the White House, workers wheeled in the Indian stars shipped here after similar appearances in Sydney and Vienna. Two performers from a local dance studio called Rhythmaya swayed to popular Bollywood songs. Attesting to the impact of Bollywood’s outreach, the hack pack from the Afghan press was as large as the Indian media contingent. Such is the devotion Bollywood inspires that Madame Tussauds’ spokespersons delightedly relate how fans have a meltdown even with the wax models. Apparently, a young lass in Bradford, UK, travelled down to the gallery in London shortly after Shahrukh Khan’s cast was unveiled in April 2007 to propose marriage and present a diamond engagement ring. She is still said to be waiting for a reply. Indeed, the gallery is one of the spookier ones in a city of museums that is Washington DC, as your correspondent found out.

An in-house panel chose the five most popular stars through such feedback. The Indian movie industry, commonly arrogated to Bollywood, is at the center of India’s muchballyhooed soft power, a term coined by US political scientist Joseph Nye to describe persuasive diplomacy through the arts, culture, entertainment and other “soft” elements rather than hard military power projection.

Although Bollywood’s revenues of around $2 billion annual is a fraction of the nearly $ 70 billion Hollywood rakes in, its footprint is as large as its American counterpart because it sells more tickets worldwide even if revenue per capita is lower.

Apparently, a young lass in Bradford, UK, traveled down to the gallery in London shortly after Shahrukh Khan’s cast was unveiled in April 2007 to propose marriage and present a diamond engagement ring. She is still said to be waiting for a reply. Indeed, the gallery is one of the spookier ones in a city of museums that is Washington DC, as your correspondent found out much to everyone’s mirth. He waited patiently for several seconds to allow a young lady to finish taking a picture of a celebrity so as to not cross her line of vision, before realizing that the photographer was also a wax model.

When the museum opened at noon (entry fee is a steep $21 for adults and $17 for children), visitors milled around posing for photos with their arms around celebrities. “That’s what makes Madam Tussauds unique,” General Manager Dan Rogoski said. “There are no barriers and velvet ropes. Visitors can be all over their idols.” A maintenance team works round the clock to keep the waxy celebrities spiffy, with every hair in place. It’s an expensive and tedious proposition which probably explains the high entry fee. At the aesthetic level, each wax clone — costing around $ 300,000 apiece — involves six months of painstaking work by 12-15 artists. This includes a two-hour sitdown session with the celebrity during which hundreds of photographs and detailed measurements are taken to make an exact replica primarily using fiber glass and bees wax. Just doing the hair and dentures takes weeks, considering they get the exact color and tone down to the last shade. The final product has to meet the approval of the celebrity being cast.
