    Movie Review:Taken 2

Cast: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, Rade Serbedzija

    Direction: Olivier Megaton

Genre: Action Duration: 1 hour 35 minutes

    Story:

Retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his ex-wife get kidnapped while holidaying in Istanbul. His daughter manages to escape. Will she be able to ‘save’ the couple? Movie Review: This sequel of 2008 hit Taken follows up a while after where the first film left off. Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) is finding it tough coming to terms with the fact that his daughter Kim is seeing a boy and may be serious about him.

The fact that she had been the recent victim of a kidnapping attempt foiled by her father is not lost on her. Father and daughter are still close and he wants nothing more than to ensure his family is safe.
So, when his ex-wife Lenore complains about a cancelled trip, he consoles her and asks them to join him after ‘work’ (an assignment where he provides security to rich, high-risk clients) in Istanbul.

Meanwhile, in faraway Albania, a village mourns at a mass burial. All the men dead at the hands of Bryan, punished for daring to kidnap his daughter and trying to sell her into prostitution. It is there that the main kidnapper’s father Murad Krasniqi ( Rade Serbedzija) vows to avenge his son and his men by capturing Mills and taking him back to his village for vengeance. As luck would have it, Lenore lands up in Instanbul with Kim and the family spends some quality time together. Their happiness is short-lived as Bryan and his ex-wife are chased and then ‘taken’ soon after.

He manages to send out a call to his daughter at their hotel and warn her of the impending danger.
He asks her to get to the safety of the US embassy but she insists on rescuing them. So he guides her to where they’re being held. After that, it’s a will-she won’t-she affair? Screenwriter Luc Besson and director Olivier Megaton play to their strengths.

Both have made films that have involved either abductions or high-octane action sequences and car chases. Liam Neeson mouths the cheesy lines and still sounds believable.

If you’re a fan of the actor or films with a similar storyline, you will enjoy this one. The car chases and the hand-to-hand fight scenes are not to be missed. Despite his bad-man act, Rade as Murad plays a convincing father driven mad by grief and your heart does reach out to him, never mind the evil he so clearly embodies. Also, this is one of those revenge flicks where you know how it could end but you’ll strap on your seatbelt and go along for the ride anyway.

The actor says, “Not wearing makeup doesn’t make one any less an actor. At the same time, you can be a very good actor with complete makeup on, for example my role in Fashion, which won me the National Award.” Releasing close on the heels of Barfi! was Heroine, and we can’t help but wonder what Priyanka means, when she tells us, “I don’t just want to be a heroine, I want to be a female actor.” She adds, “The difference in the latter comes through when one is known as an actor who is able to carry off any role.

I don’t know what the norm is; I don’t know what kind of films I should be doing or what I am supposed to be doing. I don’t know what is right or whether I should be saying ‘Oh yes, I am working with all five Khans’.” Up next, PC, who will be seen in Zanjeer alongside Ram Charan Tej, informs us that she will be doing a special number in the film. “Zanjeer is my film, so I don’t know whether it is an item number technically, but it will be an item,” she says. Gwyneth Paltrow to produce Musical Band

Gwyneth Paltrow is in talks to produce a musical based on the all-girl supergroup The Go-Go’s, according to reports. Working with several prospective co-producers, including Donovan Leitch and Rick Ferrari, Paltrow would base the musical on the life and music of the seminal 1980s all-girl group that includes Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey, Kathy Valentine, Gina Schock and Paula Jean Brown. The LA-based band, which has been touring all summer, was behind such early-’80s hits as ‘Vacation,’ ‘We Got the Beat’ and ‘Our Lips Are Sealed.’ They were the first all-female band that played their own instruments to top the Billboard charts. Given that Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia! (with music by Abba) and, most recently, American Idiot (music of Green Day) have all been hits, it makes sense to bring the all-girl supergroup back to life. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Carlisle and bandmates are considering being involved and possibly penning new songs. According to Sources, some major Broadway writers are being considered for the book, but no deals have been signed.

  • Movie Review: The Possession

    Movie Review: The Possession

Cast: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Natasha Calis, Kyra Sedgwick, Matisyahu
    Direction: Ole Bornedal
    Genre: Horror
    Duration: 1 hour 32 minutes

    Story:

A girl gets possessed by an evil spirit. Will her father be able to get rid of the curse that plagues his child? Movie Review: A young girl (Natasha Calis) buys an antique wooden box at a yard sale. Intrigued by the box with a Hebrew inscription on it, she opens it. An evil spirit is unleashed, putting her and her family’s life in danger. Will the family survive the demonic attack? The film is apparently based on a true story.

The film title pretty much says it all. Years after The Exorcist (1973) was made, filmmakers still seek inspiration from the horror classic. What distinguishes ‘The Possession’ from ‘The Exorcist’ is merely the mention of demons in Judaism. Barring the Jewish angle, The Possession, too is about a young girl who’s been possessed by a mysterious evil spirit. The girl starts displaying bouts of violent and bizarre behaviour. Her divorced parents fail to decode her dilemma and evidences of demonic possession.

The father ( Jeffrey Dean Morgan), however, senses trouble eventually and wages war against the demon, seeking help of a Jewish exorcist (played by reggae- pop star Matisyahu). Will the demon let go of the girl? The Possession is high on suspense. It even manages to keep you engaged throughout with its haunting background score and quaint big houses. The actors do a fine job.

The very young Natasha Calis is extremely convincing. The film, however, is low on originality and pace. Bornedal’s storytelling drags and gets repetitive, thus diluting moments which could have been scarier. The suspense unfolds a bit too late for it to be too creepy.

Tracks like the parents being divorced and the girl vomiting bugs seem clichéd.

Maoist diktat says no Hindi Films in Nepal

Kathmandu (TIP): The Maoists have succeeded in preventing the supply of Bollywood films to Nepal after blocking all traffic via Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh. As a result, there is no cinema hall in Nepal showing a Hindi film at present. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), a radical faction of the ruling Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), led by Mohan Kiran Vaidya had threatened last week that supporters would attack cinema halls if they continued screening Hindi films. Simultaneously, several Maoist groups owing allegiance to Vaidya established their camps in Nepal’s border area of Bhairahwan near Nautanwa in Maharajganj on the UP side and stopped all vehicles from plying between the two countries.

Vaidya had alleged that Hindi movies created hatred against Nepal. “They show Nepalis as servants only and portray us in bad light,” he said. Raj Kumar Rai, president of Nepal Film Producers Association, was quoted as saying that cinema halls across Nepal will incur a loss of several crores. “Since most of the people go to cinema halls to see Hindi movies, they are now deprived of entertainment here.

    Movie review- Resident Evil: Retribution

Cast: Milla Jovovich, Bingbing Li, Sienna Guillory, Boris Kodjoe
    Direction: Paul W.S.Anderson
    Genre: Action
    Duration: 1 hour 36 minutes

    Story:

The human race once again faces fear of extinction. And the only hope for survival, as always, is Alice ( Milla Jovovich).

    But how?

    Movie Review:

Her name is Alice and that is her wonderland — a land you’d love to be a part of, specially if 3D is the way of life. Here cities do not exist for real; they are all but a part of the imagination and holographic representations called Sequences. There’s the New York sequence of bio chemicals, Tokyo sequence of artificial climate, Moscow sequence of snow-covered areas. In short, the setting (hi-tech stuff, we mean) is perfect.

Now for the action and all that scary stuff the Resident Evil series is usually made up of. Well, the fifth installment has its share of action — bullets, bombs and the zombies in thousands — that does make you sit up as the blood and gore hits your face. However, it’s only when the emphasis is too much on all that long drawn conversation leading to longer gaps in the action cuts, do you end up feeling a bit distracted. But then when the zombies and the Red Queen with her death threat – ‘You are all going to die down there’ — are back on screen, you know why the series has a strong fan base.

Finally, over to the main ‘hero’ of this wonderland – Alice, aka Milla. As always, like the quintessential female warrior, she plays the role almost to perfection, battling ogres and monsters of all shapes and sizes, and jumping off here, there, everywhere. What’s more, she also has Ada Wong ( Bingbing Li) to help her spill guts, specially when Milla is seen falling and running from her enemies (a couple of time).

Just one wish: Hope the sixth movies in the series – as made pretty evident in the last scene – has our Alice girl kicking some more butt. After all, that’s what she’s good at…. And that’s precisely what we want to see her do….

Despite a noticing debut in Mission Istanbul, actress Shweta Bhardwaj couldn’t cash in on the success of the movie and after doing few puny flicks, she returned to her roots i.e modelling. Shweta is now back in tinsel town with Ram Bhajan Zindabad, where she is playing ‘Dilli Rani’.

“My character is of a prostitute and a dancer, who dreams to be a politician one day. The movie is actually a political satire. The film is about a poor lay man and will leave you shaken and amused simultaneously,” elaborates Shweta.
The damsel is known for her care-a-damn attitude and is open to play any bold role. Ask her about this and she starts laughing. “Really, I don’t think ten times before saying. I guess that’s why I love making statements. Just kidding. Bold roles are not something I plan in life when work comes to me. Sometimes I think about it and then I leave it to my manager.”

Speaking about today’s trends of actresses doing bold scenes or posting nude pics on social networking sites, she defends, “No one is forcing people to watch them. Don’t create an opinion about others without knowing them. Nude pictures can look beautiful but depends how well they are taken or how fine you are looking in the photos. Sex is actually in your mind so don’t make nudity a big deal. It is overrated. Even today’s kids don’t make sex a big deal anymore.”

  • What Dia Mirza likes in a man?

What Dia Mirza likes in a man?

Actress Dia Mirza believes that the quality that makes a man stand out is his character.

  • Katrina’s sartorial crisis

    Katrina’s sartorial crisis

Famously, it was poet-thinker Harindanath Chattopadhyay who said, “It’s very difficult to be simple”. By his reckoning , Katrina’s most difficult role is in Ek Tha Tiger. Director Kabir Khan who had earlier insisted on a no-makeup look for Katrina in New York has this time gone even further and insisted that she wear clothes from her own wardrobe which Katrina has happily done. As a friend of the actress says, “Casual wear is Katrina’s biggest joy in life. She hates to dress up and put on makeup. She is happiest when unadorned. No wonder we see her face plastered with a smile during the Ek Tha Tiger schedules.”

Interestingly it’s just the opposite for Katrina in the Yashraj film where she is throughout dressed up to look urbane cool. When it comes to the bitter vibes between Shah Rukh and Salman Khan even their co-star gets caught in the vehement crossfire in a most unexpected way. Hence it’s two different Katrina Kaifs shooting simultaneously with the Khan superstars for the same banner. Sartorially she is as far removed in Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger and Yash Chopra’s untitled film as humanly possible.

Salman’s girl in Tiger is minimalist in every sense. She talks less and wears practical comfortable clothes. Says a source close to Katrina, “Katrina is dressed completely like an average city girl of today on Ek Tha Tiger. That basically means she’s for the first time dressing up for a role exactly the way she dresses up in real life. Katrina even dug into her own wardrobe for this part. For the Yashji’s film Katrina was given a far more chic appearance. Even when she is doing a casual song in the park the ‘casual’ look has been considerably worked upon.”

Chitrangada open to do item numbers

Before turning to the silver screen, Chitrangada Singh never walked the ramp despite being a model as she was not tall enough. “I am happy that as a package of being an actor I also get to do different things.

I never walked the ramp earlier because I was not tall enough,” Chitrangada said after setting the ramp on fire in a sizzling gold and black evening wear by designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi at the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour. After working in advertisements and music videos, the 36-year-old wife of Indian golfer Jyoti Randhawa had impressed everybody with her debut role in Sudhir Mishra’s 2005 film ‘Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi’. While at the backstage of the fashion show, Chitrangada said she felt out of place. “Now I have done enough of catwalks but yet I am nervous everytime I set my foot on the ramp,” she said. Based on the issue of gender politics, Chitrangada would soon be shooting for another Sudhir Mishra film ‘Inkaar’ where she is cast opposite Arjun Rampal. “It is a film about sexual harassment.

It shows that proving rape is easier than proving sexual harassment,” she said. The dusky actress would also be seen in a romantic film ‘I, Me, aur Main’ with John Abraham. For now she is disappointed that the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Joker’, where she had an item number ‘Kaafirana’, bombed at the box office.
