New Yorkers for the Equality Model Call for Passage of Sex Trade Survivors Justice & Equality Act at NYS Capitol
ALBANY, NY (TIP): Celebrity activist and survivor Ashley Judd stood with lawmakers and dozens of advocates and survivors of sex trafficking from New Yorkers for the Equality Model (NYFEM), a survivor-led alliance seeking to shrink the exploitative sex trade industry, at the New York State Capitol today calling for the passage of the Sex Trade Survivors Justice and Equality Act (STSJEA) S2005/A1465. Aimed at dismantling the mechanisms of the sex trade, the STSJEA bolsters protections and essential support services for survivors while holding the people who exploit them accountable.
“This legislation will advance the humane, ethical, and just imperative of better protecting women, girls and LGBTQ individuals in the sex trade by increasing services and holding the sex buyers and pimps who are exploiting their economic, social, and other vulnerabilities accountable,” said Ashley Judd, actor and global humanitarian. “The harms will continue to impact the most marginalized in our society until we finally hold sex buyers accountable. The demand for our bodies will continue to be met by coercion, violence, force, and exploitation until the Equality Model becomes both law and norm. As a survivor of commercial and private sexual assault, I know well that recovery is a long road, and I’m grateful that this bill accounts for these traumas and the survivors’ lived realities.”
Sponsored by New York State Senator Liz Krueger (SD-28) and Assemblymember Pamela Hunter (AD-128), the internationally recognized “Equality Model” has seen successful adoption in countries such as Sweden, Norway, France, Canada, Ireland, and Israel. The STSJEA would end the arrests and incarceration of individuals in prostitution, while maintaining strict penalties for buyers and third parties like traffickers and brothel owners.
“I believe the role of government is to champion those with less power against the systems of exploitation that seek to take advantage of their marginalization, and that is why I am proud to sponsor the Sex Trade Survivors Justice & Equality Act,” said Senator Krueger. “This is smart, data-driven, progressive legislation crafted with the invaluable input of advocates and sex trade survivors. This bill will empower and support people currently or formerly in the sex trade, while holding pimps, brothel owners, and sex buyers accountable for the harms that they cause.”
“While some might believe that sex trafficking is predominantly a New York City issue or a national border issue, the intersection of interstate highways 90 and 81 in my district are also thruways for trafficking victims,” said Assemblymember Hunter. “This issue is pervasive throughout the state and for far too long, efforts have been focused on punishing the people who are bought and sold in this multi-billion-dollar industry when they should be on targeting the traffickers, pimps, and sex buyers that perpetuate and uphold this destructive market. My bill, the Sex Trade Survivors Justice & Equality Act, protects the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals who are frequent targets in the sex trade such as members of Black & Brown communities, the LGBTQ+ population, run away and foster youth, individuals experiencing homelessness, and undocumented immigrants.”
The bill seeks to significantly reduce the demand for prostitution which fuels the commercial sex industry, thereby interrupting the cycle of gender-based violence. Furthermore, the STSJEA is designed to enhance New York State’s legal measures around sex trafficking, including eliminating loopholes that have previously allowed traffickers, such as Jeffrey Epstein, who trafficked people for themselves, to evade prosecution.
Co-sponsors for the STSJEA include Cordell Cleare (SD-30), Nathalia Fernandez (SD-34), John Liu (SD-16) and Zellnor Myrie (SD-20) in the Senate with Amy Paulin (AD-88), Andrew Hevesi (AD-28), Rodneyse Bichotte-Hermelyn (AD-42), Chris Burdick (AD-93), Maritza Davila (AD-53), Alicia Hyndman (AD-29) and Crystal Peoples-Stokes (AD-141) in the Assembly.
“Upon my first election to the Senate, I pledged to end the scourge of Human Trafficking. I have passed several bills in the interim that are now law,” said Senator Cleare. “The Sex Trade Survivors Justice and Equality Act is a necessary step to protect survivors and hold traffickers accountable. I stand with survivors and advocates in demanding justice now!”
“The commercial sex trade is a form of modern-day slavery, and we must break this abusive cycle that continually blames the victims,” said Senator Liu. “The Sex Trade Survivors Justice and Equality Act is the right way forward that shifts the focus from punishing survivors to holding traffickers, pimps, and buyers accountable. It’s a crucial step toward delivering justice to those who have been trapped in a cycle of manipulation and exploitation.”
“As a longtime advocate for survivors, I know that true justice means shifting the burden away from those who are exploited and toward those who exploit,” said Assemblymember Paulin. The STSJEA will provide essential protections and services to those who need them most.”
“The time to act is now, said Assemblymember Burdick. “By passing the STSJEA, we can send a clear message that New York values the dignity of survivors and will not tolerate the continued exploitation of vulnerable individuals.”
The STSJEA also commits to providing comprehensive support services for those wishing to leave the life of prostitution, including undocumented immigrants. These trauma-informed services include housing, legal and immigration assistance, health and mental health services, employment placement, education and training.
“I was coerced into prostitution as a preteen, a time when I should have been protected, not exploited,” said Melanie Thompson, Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator for the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women. “Studies have shown that up to 90% of people in prostitution are pimp controlled. The Sex Trade Survivor Justice and Equality Act recognizes the plight of survivors like me and gives us a voice and a path to justice and recovery.”
“Survivors like me live with the trauma of exploitation every day, while pimps and sex buyers, the true perpetrators, often escape accountability,” said Cristian Eduardo, Co-founder of United Immigrants of New York. “Prostitution is not merely an occupation; it is a form of violence, a pseudo-solution to poverty, and certainly not a path to liberation for the LGBTQIA+ community. The Sex Trade Survivors Justice and Equality Act recognizes this reality by criminalizing those who exploit our vulnerabilities.”
“This pivotal legislation cuts the demand that fuels human trafficking, providing comprehensive social services that go beyond immediate legal needs,” said Sonia Ossorio, President at National Organization for Women New York City. “It offers medical and legal aid, and immigration assistance, crucial for the recovery and integration of survivors. Crafted from the voices and experiences of survivors, the STSJEA is not just legislation, but a commitment to healing, and a declaration that exploitation has no place in a just society.”
“In criminalizing the buyers and pimps who profit from the suffering caused by the sex trafficking industry, this legislation directly targets those responsible for perpetuating its cycle of exploitation,” said Alexi Meyers, Director of Anti-Trafficking Policy at Sanctuary for Families. “This is more than just changing laws. It’s about restoring dignity and prosperity for those who have been unjustly stripped of it by this abusive and manipulative industry.”

“Dr. Shivangi has left an indelible mark on the Indian American community”: Dr. Satheesh Kathula
CHICAGO (TIP): “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the sudden passing away of Dr. Sampat Shivangi, a physician, an influential Indian American community leader, and a veteran leader of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI),” said Dr. Satheesh Kathula, President of AAPI.
Describing Dr. Shivangi as “A trailblazer of the Indian Diaspora,” Dr. Kathula, who has known Dr. Shivangi for decades and has worked closely in several AAPI-led initiatives, said, “Dr. Shivangi has left an indelible mark on the Indian American community. Over the decades, he dedicated his time and efforts to serving AAPI and numerous other Indian American organizations. His leadership, vision, and tireless commitment to advocating for the community set him apart as a pillar of strength and guidance.”
“AAPI is proud of Dr. Shivangi’s numerous accomplishments, leadership, and contributions to the greater cause of the Indian Diaspora, Indo-US relationship, and particularly for his dedication to enhancing the mission of AAPI,” said Dr. Sunil Kaza, Chair of AAPI Borad of Trustees.
Among many other initiates that Dr. Shivangi led at AAPI during his decades long association, the most outstanding has been his leadership in organizing the annual Legislative day under several Presidents of AAPI. He was instrumental in personally contacting and inviting several lawmakers, including prominent US Senators and Congressman to the Legislative day.
Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, President-Elect of AAPI said, “The Indian American community has lost a great leader, philanthropist, and friend whose contributions will continue to resonate for generations. Through his philanthropic efforts, Dr. Shivangi touched countless lives, always striving to make a positive impact both in the healthcare sector and within the broader community.
Dr. Shivangi has been actively involved in several philanthropic activities, serving with Blind Foundation of MS, Diabetic, Cancer and Heart Associations of America. Dr. Shivangi has a number of philanthropic works in India including Primary & middle schools, Cultural Center, and IMA Centers that he opened and helped to obtain the first ever US Congressional grant to AAPI to study Diabetes Mellitus amongst Indian Americans.
It was only about a month ago that the President of India, Droupadi Muramu inaugurated the newly built Dr. Sampat Kumar S. Shivangi Cancer Hospital in Belagavi, Karnataka. Spanning 1,75,000 square feet with a capacity of 300 beds, the hospital was built with cutting-edge technology with funds donated and raised by Dr. Sampat Shivangi, a distinguished Indian American community leader with a profound impact on healthcare, education, and cultural preservation across India and the United States.
“A dream comes true! It fills my heart with immense pride and gratitude for the new state-of-the-art Dr. Sampat Kumar S Shivangi Cancer Hospital in my beloved home state, Belagavi, has finally become a reality,” Dr. Sampat Shivangi, who donated his family fortunes to build this much needed, cancer hospital in a rural region in the state of Karnataka, said here. “Having lived in India for three decades, in not so privileged and progressive parts of the world, it always touched my heart and Atma why so and why not we all have equal playing field on earth,’ Dr. Shivangi said, when asked about what led him to his decision to donate his money, time, efforts and skills.
“During my years in hospitals as a student, resident and staff, I was devastated. I had a great desire to do something that helps people, including for the need to establish a cancer hospital in my native town, where people have to travel hundreds of miles away for such a treatment and possibly could not afford the travel, stay, or medical expenses.”
Dr. Shivangi contributed immensely “to the greater cause of the Indian Diaspora, Indo-US relationship, and particularly for his dedication to enhancing the mission of AAPI”, said Dr. Sunil Kaza, Chair of AAPI Borad of Trustees. He was recognized for his contribution at the highest levels. In this picture he is seen receiving the coveted Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from the then President of India, Pranab Mukherji
Describing the goals of the Cancer Hospital and the Charitable Foundation, Dr. Shivangi, a soft-spoken physician says, “The Charitable Foundation was set up several years ago to establish, promote, and provide the needy and the downtrodden fellow human beings with opportunities to access quality education, promote mental health awareness, ensure healthcare equity, support tribal communities in their holistic development, empower women to break barriers, and leverage sports as a catalyst for positive change.”
In addition to establishing the Dr. Sampat Kumar S. Shivangi Cancer Hospital in Karnataka, through the Dr. Sampat Shivangi Foundation, Dr. Shivangi has established multiple charitable institutions in India, including primary and middle schools, community halls, and healthcare facilities, greatly enhancing educational and healthcare access for underserved communities.
In the U.S., Dr. Shivangi has contributed to establishing a Hindu Temple in Jackson, Mississippi, providing a cultural and spiritual hub for the Hindu community and beyond. Recognized for his exemplary service, a street in Mississippi bears his name, a testament to his contributions to healthcare and community welfare.
Over the years, in the pursuit of its vision, the Dr. Sampat Shivangi Foundation has come to be known for its belief and tireless efforts that every individual deserves an opportunity to thrive, and is a beacon of hope, fostering resilience and building a more inclusive and harmonious world for all.
At the heart of societal transformation, the Dr. Sampat Shivangi Foundation stands as a testament to unwavering commitment and compassion. The foundation is built upon the pillars of education, healthcare, mental well-being, tribal support, women’s empowerment, and sports development. With a profound understanding of the multifaceted needs of underprivileged communities, we have designed a range of initiatives that address these vital aspects of human well-being.
As the first Indian American to serve on the Board of the Mississippi State Department of Mental Health, Dr. Shivangi has made significant strides in mental health advocacy. His leadership extends to national positions, serving on the National Board of Directors for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), appointed by Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
Dr. Shivangi was a veteran leader of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI). From L to R: AAPI President Dr. Satheesh Kathula, Dr. Sampat Shivangi.
A dedicated advocate for Indo-U.S. relations, Dr. Shivangi has contributed to key initiatives, including the Indo-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement, collaborating with President George W. Bush to strengthen ties between the two nations. His commitment to India is further reflected in his coordination efforts with the White House to lift sanctions against India during President Bill Clinton’s administration.
A recipient of numerous awards, including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, The US Congressional Recognition Award, the Ellis Medal of Honor Award, Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indo-American Press Club, Dr. Shivangi’s legacy reflects a lifelong dedication to improving lives through healthcare, philanthropy, and international diplomacy.
Dr. Shivangi said, he always thought about why, the Indian Americans especially, the Physician fraternity, consisting of more than 100,000 physicians in the United States are not willing to undertake philanthropy in their homeland or in USA. “My hope and prayers is that, many more will follow me just as my dream has come true today. I urge my fellow Indo-American physicians to join this movement and help change the world for the better. My humble request is that let us be the change, and bring this movement to make our world different tomorrow. I hope my prayers will be answered one day and all humanity lives in a better world.”
Dr. Shivangi is married to Dr. Udaya S. Shivangi, MD, and the couple are blessed with two daughters: Priya S. Shivangi, MS (NYU); and Pooja S. Shivangi, who is an Attorney at Law. “His legacy will remain an inspiration for all who knew him, and his absence will be deeply felt. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time,” Dr. Kathula said.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): Congressman Suozzi, on February 11, led a Ways and Means letter to Michelle King, Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The letter was co-signed by every Democratic Member of the Ways and Means Committee, including Ranking Member Neal (D-MA).
The letter expressed alarm about the recent access Elon Musk and the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) was able to gain to the Department of the Treasury’s payment systems, and conveyed further concern about reports that DOGE plans to turn its attention to the SSA.
“Social Security has been the bedrock promise of economic security in our nation for the last century,” the Members wrote. “After a lifetime of work or in life’s most precarious moments, it provides benefits to approximately 70 million people across the United States, including seniors, survivors, and people with disabilities.”
The SSA has access to Americans’ most personal information, including banking information, home addresses, disability status, medical conditions, if a parent or spouse has died, and Social Security numbers themselves.
The letter also requests Commissioner King respond to several questions regarding the security of Americans’ Social Security information within 72 hours. These inquiries include an assessment of potential risks to information, whether or not DOGE has requested access to SSA’s systems, and what kind of security checks are currently in place.
“We will not stand by and allow the sensitive personal information of our nation’s Social Security beneficiaries to be politicized or bought and sold to the highest bidder, or to allow any harm to their Social Security benefits,” the Members continued. “The stakes are too high and the consequences too grave.”
“My office alone has received more than 1,000 calls from constituents who are afraid Elon Musk and his DOGE team of college-aged kids have unfettered access to their private information,” said Suozzi. “No one, including DOGE, should be ransacking the confidential information of private citizens, whether that information relates to their taxes, their healthcare, their social security status, or anything else.”

GLEN COVE, NY (TIP): Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) recognized and honored high school students from New York’s Third Congressional District for their achievements in life science, computer science, and mathematics in the Regeneron Science Talent Search and the Congressional App Challenge.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory hosted the ceremony, during which Suozzi was introduced by Dr. Bruce Stillman, President and CEO.
“Amidst what seems like only negative news, the good news shines brightly. Despite representing just 0.2% of the U.S. population, New York’s Third Congressional District boasts 8.3% of the Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars,” said Suozzi. “The Third Congressional District has consistently produced the brightest young talent the nation has to offer. This achievement is a testament to these students’ hard work and dedication and the exceptional high schools they attend. These students represent the future of our community and our country, and I am proud to honor their remarkable accomplishments.”

Shortly after the dawn of this New Year, the residents of Bellmore were swiftly greeted by one of the persistent, age-old crises – the consequences stemming from the steady deterioration of Nassau County’s aging infrastructure.
On January 6, Bellmore Avenue was closed in both directions between Sunrise Highway and Clarendon Avenue due to a water main break, creating a hazardous situation for motorists and a massive traffic headache on some of our County’s most heavily traveled roads. In Nassau County’s south shore communities, we have been here before, and with alarming frequency. Just last year, the community of Baldwin was impacted by two major water main breaks – one on Sept. 30 which occurred underneath Winona Road and interrupted water service for 115 Baldwin homes and caused severe flooding in properties throughout the impacted area. In June of 2024, another water main break forced residents to navigate days without clean water, cost businesses thousands of dollars in revenues, and resulted in a boil-water order from the Nassau County Department of Health for thousands in Baldwin, Island Park, Oceanside, Roosevelt, and South Hempstead residents and businesses. (Both of these incidents involved pipes owned by the for-profit Liberty Water, which further underscores the importance of completing the transition to municipal water under the newly formed South Nassau Water Authority).
Then there was the spring and summer of 2023, during which Nassau County’s south shore was thrown into disarray by three sinkhole incidents during a two-month span.
It started on May 31 when Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach was badly damaged and rendered impassable by a sinkhole. It followed with the June 27 failure of a 42-inch sewer main under Baldwin’s Grand Avenue, which made the road impassable until mid-July and spilled untreated sewage into nearby Brookside Creek and the backyards of neighboring residents, causing environmental damage to local ecosystems. Finally, on July 30, Foxhurst Road in Oceanside forced the road’s closure; the cause – the eruption of an underground water main pipe, which caused the road above to buckle.
All of this leads to one unavoidable conclusion – that Nassau County has a serious infrastructure problem – and it will only get worse if we do not take decisive action now to address it once and for all. Unfortunately, Nassau County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman and his administration have demonstrated little drive for fulfilling the duties of his office, and that extends to his handling of Nassau’s capital infrastructure plan.
Each year, we are directed by the Nassau County Charter to adopt a capital infrastructure plan for the following year no later than December 15. Since taking office in 2022, Blakeman and his administration have had three opportunities to enact a plan – but he has only fulfilled this baseline governmental responsibility once in the last three years, despite repeated calls from myself, colleagues in government and concerned citizens to make infrastructure a top priority.
The capital plan for fiscal year 2025 is currently caught in a state of inertia because of the Blakeman administration’s refusal to negotiate and finalize a comprehensive and equitable plan. After meeting with the administration, the Legislative Minority submitted revisions to County Executive Blakeman as part of this process. However, despite our repeated requests to meet and finalize the plan and a corresponding bond ordinance to fund projects, he has been unresponsive, further delaying implementation.
Not only could these delays further impede our ability to maintain, repair and update infrastructure so that we do not experience additional catastrophic failures, the County Executive’s inaction is slamming the brakes on economic development opportunities in Nassau. Infrastructure projects are a key driver of good jobs across the spectrum of various construction trades, and every day that this drags on further is another day that these hard-working men and women are deprived of a chance to put their skills to use in building our collective future.
As a member of the Nassau County Legislature’s Democratic Minority, capital infrastructure plans – and specifically the borrowing that funds the projects within it – is one area where we continue to hold bargaining power. Passing a bond ordinance requires a 13-vote supermajority, and we as a caucus will not provide that 13th vote for additional borrowing until the Blakeman administration presents a fair and equitable capital plan proposal that meets the needs of the communities we serve and provides a clear plan for funding those projects.
Our infrastructure is in serious need of major investments, and the piecemeal approach currently in use will only delay the inevitable. It is time to sit down and implement a plan that serves all of Nassau County’s 1.4 million residents and puts us on a road to a safer and more secure future.
(Debra Mulé, of Freeport, is the Nassau County Legislature’s Alternate Deputy Minority Leader. She was first elected to the Legislature in 2017 and currently represents the Sixth District)
Year of the Snake marks the first time students have Lunar New Year off from school

Suozzi also Presented Honorary 7th Degree Taekwondo Black Belt For Long Time Support of the Korean American Community
WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-NY), on January 23, introduced a resolution celebrating the alliance between the United States and South Korea. Suozzi was also presented with an honorary seventh-degree Taekwondo black belt by Grandmaster Dr. Lee Dong-sup, President of Kukkiwon, the governing body of Taekwondo, due to his long-standing support for the Korean American community. This year marks the 80th anniversary of South Korea’s liberation from colonial rule.
“Over the past 122 years, Korean Americans have made invaluable contributions to our communities and the culture we share,” said Suozzi. “I cherish the friendships I’ve developed within this vibrant community and encourage everyone to recognize and celebrate the rich heritage and achievements of Korean Americans.”
“I am very pleased and honored to participate in the resolution introduced by Representative Tom Suozzi in US Congress today, the 23rd of January 2025, to proclaim Korean Culture Day in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Korea, to reaffirm the strength of the ROK-U.S. alliance, and to express gratitude for the dedication of Korean Americans who have contributed to the development of the United States with their diligence, perseverance, and tenacity over the past 122 years,” said Minsun Kim, President of the Museum of Korean American Heritage.
This resolution affirms the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea based on principles of democracy and human rights.
“Although I have not trained in Taekwondo, I am interested in learning, and I am deeply humbled to receive this honorary black belt,” said Suozzi. “My strong ties to the Korean communities on Long Island and in Queens reflect the deep friendship we share, making this recognition truly meaningful.”
MILPITAS, CA (TIP): The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), under the leadership of Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal, has expressed strong concerns over recent actions by U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who have reportedly conducted visits to Gurdwaras in New York and New Jersey to search for undocumented immigrants.
“These actions are deeply troubling and have hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community,” said Satnam Singh Chahal. “Gurdwaras are sacred places of worship dedicated to God and community service, not places to hide illegal immigrants. Raids in these spaces undermine their sanctity and create an atmosphere of fear and distrust.”
The Sikh community has strongly condemned this approach, viewing it as a threat to the sanctity of their faith. Gurdwaras are not only places of prayer but also centers for community support, offering free meals (langar) and assistance to all individuals, regardless of their background.
NAPA is calling on the Trump administration and the Department of Homeland Security to refrain from conducting such enforcement actions at Gurdwaras in the future. “The Sikh community is an integral part of American society, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic, cultural, and social development,” Chahal emphasized. “Actions like these risk alienating a community that has always been dedicated to upholding the values of inclusivity, hard work, and unity.”
NAPA urges DHS to adopt an alternative approach that respects religious freedom and fosters trust within communities. Instead of targeting places of worship, the organization recommends engaging in dialogue with Sikh community leaders to ensure mutual understanding and collaboration.
“As Americans, we must uphold the principles of religious freedom and respect for all faiths. We hope the administration will reconsider its approach to immigration enforcement and avoid actions that harm the sentiments of any religious group,” Chahal concluded.

About Air India group
The Air India group – comprising of full-service global airline Air India and low-cost regional carrier Air India Express – is spearheading a new era of Indian aviation. The Air India story began in 1932 when JRD Tata piloted the airline’s inaugural flight and opened the skies for aviation in India. Today, Air India group employs more than 30,000 people, operates over 300 aircraft and carries customers to 55 domestic and 48 international destinations across five continents.
In pictures: Air India’s cabin crew recreated iconic New York City moments and visited popular movie locations to celebrate new Air India’s arrival in New York.
Returning to the Tata Sons in 2022 following 70 years under Government ownership, Air India group is in the midst of a five-year transformation program, Vihaan.AI. As part of the transformation, Air India placed the then largest-ever order for 470 new aircraft in 2023. In 2024, sister airlines Air Asia India and Vistara were successfully merged into Air India Express and Air India respectively, and the Airline opened South Asia’s largest aviation training academy. A new flying school is scheduled to open in 2025, and construction of a greenfield maintenance base, to be operational in 2026, is underway. In addition to receiving new aircraft, all existing aircraft are progressively undergoing a full interior refit.
With transformation underway across all facets of the business and India’s rich legacy of hospitality, Air India is committed to being a world class global airline with an Indian heart.
In celebration of the launch, Air India’s cabin crew went on a cinematic journey in New York City to recreate iconic moments and in search of some of the city’s landmarks featured in Hollywood movies. Donning their new Manish Malhotra-designed uniforms, here is how they strolled through the city, expressing their excitement and pride for the ‘new Air India experience’ arriving in New York.
Reliving a piece of history, Air India cabin crew members recreated one of the most influential photographs of all time, the iconic ‘Lunch Atop a Skyscraper’ photograph from 1932. The photograph showed ironworkers taking a casual lunch break on a towering skyscraper beam during the construction of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Air India’s crew took a moment to capture the spirit of innovation and adventure embodied in the striking photograph, atop Rockefeller Plaza.
The serene beauty and lush greenery around the picturesque Gapstow Bridge in Central Park has made the bridge a popular choice among filmmakers across generations. This is where Kevin McCallister first encounters the pigeon lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and it is also where the ‘Runway Jungle’ photo shoot takes place in The Devil Wears Prada.
The grand staircase of The Met that leads up to the museum’s entrance is a striking architectural feature, and where numerous TV shows and films have been shot. The Met steps were a regular backdrop for popular drama series, Gossip Girl, as well as for much of the popular heist movie, Ocean’s 8. And in When Harry Met Sally, the funny “pecan pie” sequence, in which Harry and Sally are in a museum and they talk about ‘too much pepper on paprikash’, was filmed here.
The Air India crew strolled the busy sidewalks under bright neon lights of Times Square, as the highly popular tourist attraction has featured in numerous Bollywood and Hollywood movies. Whether it is the subliminal imagery in Tom Cruise’s Vanilla Sky that shows him running alone through Times Square, the flashmob scene in Friends with Benefits, or Preity Zinta’s happy dance in the Bollywood movie Kal Ho Naa Ho, Times Square dazzles anywhere one sees it, on the silver screen and in real life.
The iconic yellow taxis in New York have become a staple in countless movies set in the city. They often serve as more than just transportation, symbolizing the hustle and bustle of urban life and even playing active roles in plots. Whether it’s a quick cameo or a central element, the New York taxis are a cinematic icon.
The iconic scene from Scent of a Woman, in which Frank (Al Pacino) and Donna (Gabrielle Anwar) tangoed was filmed at The Pierre, providing the perfect backdrop for the passionate dance and making it one of the most memorable moments in the film. Air India crew stopped by in the stunning Rotunda Room at The Pierre hotel in Manhattan to remember the iconic film.
The 1979 Woody Allen classic, Manhattan, known for being a glorious celebration of New York, was another inspiration for the cabin crew members. The Air India crew found the exact spot and recreated the profound scene in which Isaac Davis (Woody Allen) and Mary Wilkie (Diane Keaton) sit underneath Queensboro Bridge, admiring it and talking until dawn. An image of the scene also became the film’s iconic poster.
