Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke with new London Mayor Mr. Khan

Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke, May 10, with newly elected Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to congratulate him on his historic victory.

The mayors recounted their meeting in Manchester two years ago, where Mayor de Blasio recalled noting Sadiq Khan as a rising star among Britain’s liberals.

Mayor Khan said Mayor de Blasio had served as an example to him on the election trail — leading a campaign focused on authenticity and a strong progressive vision — as well as in office. Mayor Khan emphasized that Mayor de Blasio’s substantive agenda was now reflected in several of Mayor Khan’s priorities for the city of London.

Mayor de Blasio said Mayor Khan’s election was an inspiration, invited him to New York City, and offered to provide the newly elected Mayor with any helpful guidance as he begins his term in office. The two also discussed shared progressive values such as affordable housing, sustainability and equality, as well as the negative impacts of intolerance and xenophobia around the world.
