MANGANO AND O’CONNELL HONOR CLAIRE MILLMAN AS NASSAU COUNTY’S WOMAN OF THE YEAR

MINEOLA, NY (TIP): Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell announced , May 28, that Claire Millman is Nassau County’s 2014 Senior Woman of the Year. Mrs. Claire Millman was presented an award at the 40th Annual May Luncheon/Conference in Observance of Older Americans Month on May 20th.

Mrs. Millman represented Nassau County in Albany at the 2014 Senior Citizens Day Celebration and Awards Ceremony on May 6th. Mrs. Millman is a Phi-Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College. She has been a Plainview resident for over 54 years, where she currently resides with her husband, Stan, of 59 years. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Millman has been a Smoke Free Environment Activist for 40 years who has fought tirelessly to achieve smoke free air in all public places and workplaces by educating officials and the public about the hazards of active and passive smoking, and establishing laws for the health protection of all. Her efforts have been successful, and she has earned many awards including Woman of Distinction 2003, Town of Oyster Bay; and Honoree, N.Y. State Council of the Aging 2001.

She recently received Lifetime Achievement Awards from Brooklyn College and the Association of Generational Experts for Seniors. She was featured in Newsday’s Act 2 cover story, Pioneer Smoke Free Environment Activist, on March 29th.

Mrs. Millman is also an officer and performer of New York Senior America. In 1995, she was a Pageant Finalist and has been on the Board of Directors since 1998. She was the President for six years and is the Communications Director and coproducer of the website.

She performs at nursing homes, veteran’s hospitals, senior groups, and patriotic events. Her greatest rewards are bringing joy to the disabled and being called an inspiration by young and senior audiences. She motivates seniors to be active and to try something new at any age. Mrs. Millman clearly celebrates life everyday by her positive philosophy of life.

She values every day and has a passion and joy for everything she does. She is truly an inspiration.
