NEW YORK (TIP): Indian American media executive Vivek Shah has been elected as the new chair of the foundation board at CUNY to help further its mission to provide accessible, high-quality journalism education.
As Chief Executive Officer of Ziff Davis, a vertically focused digital media and internet company, Shah brings extensive experience in digital transformation and media leadership, according to a news release. His background includes senior management positions at Time, Inc., where he served as Digital Group President and President of the Fortune/Money Group.
Shah takes over from Arthur Sulzberger Jr., a board member since 2018 and former chairman of The New York Times Company, who continues as chair emeritus.
Four professionals have also joined the board: vice chair Robin Sparkman, president of ProPublica; Sarah Alvarez, James B. Steele Chair in Journalism Innovation at Temple University; Marjorie D. Parker, President and CEO of JobsFirstNYC, and Richard Stengel, former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in the Obama administration.
“The new leadership comes at a historic moment for the school,” said the release noting, “In 2024, thanks to a generous gift from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the school announced a campaign to become the first tuition-free journalism school in the nation by 2027.”
“This board represents the caliber of leadership needed to achieve our ambitious tuition-free goals,” said Dean Graciela Mochkofsky. “Their combined expertise in media, technology, public service, and innovative journalism perfectly aligns with our mission to ensure that all students, regardless of background or income, can access exceptional journalism education.”
The Newmark J-School Foundation funds scholarships, internship stipends, research, training, and programmatic activities supporting the school’s educational mission, the release stated. This board expansion is core to the tuition-free campaign and reinforces CUNY’s decades-long commitment as a beacon of access and opportunity for New Yorkers. Shah also serves on the board of directors of StreetSquash, LiveOnNY, the Tufts University Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisors for its Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Shah graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
