ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (TIP) : Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) presented a $7,000 grant to the Rockville Centre-based Anti-Racism Project, which administers Sharon’s Pantry, on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The presentation was made during September as part of Hunger Action Month in America.

Sharon’s Pantry is named after Sharon Sheppard, the current assistant director of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Rockville Centre. The pantry helps address hunger in the community and was founded in the spring of 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in partnership with Rena Riback and her team at the Anti-Racism Project.

“Everyone at Sharon’s Pantry wants to express sincere gratitude for the grant for our local food pantry. This funding is especially vital as food costs continue to rise and many families struggle and we are seeing an increase in families needing food,” said Sharon Sheppard and Karen Mobley, who run the pantry together. “Thanks to your efforts, the pantry can continue to provide food to our community. Your commitment to addressing food insecurity is making a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors, and we are very grateful for your dedication.”

The full Nassau County Legislature voted unanimously on Dec. 16, 2024 to authorize the grant, which was drawn from federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds that, at the Democratic Minority’s urging, were set aside for eligible not-for-profit organizations and special districts that deliver ARPA-approved services.“Sharon’s Pantry was formed to meet a tremendous need that emerged during one of the most challenging times in our recent history,” Legislator Davis said. “Through my work with the Rockville Centre MLK Center, I know firsthand how great the need still is, and how Sharon, Karen and their entire team work selflessly to ensure no family goes hungry. I am proud to have secured these funds and know they will be put to excellent use across our community.”
