Malaika Arora defends Bollywood dance numbers

Malaika Arora, known for her iconic dance performances in Bollywood, has spoken about the evolution of dance numbers in Indian cinema. In an interview, she shared her perspective on how these performances have transformed over the years, addressing both industry trends and public debate about their role and impact. Her insights highlight shifts in how such sequences are conceived and perceived by both filmmakers and audiences.
Discussing her career trajectory, Malaika reflected on the journey of dance numbers, noting that they have significantly changed since she began. She acknowledged that these routines have sparked debate for years, particularly regarding their narrative relevance and alleged promotion of vulgarity. Despite the controversies, Malaika believes that item songs have come a “long way”.
She explained to Hollywood Reporter, the earlier approach to dance numbers, stating, “Earlier, they were mostly about glamour and spectacle, often detached from a woman’s individuality. Today, filmmakers are more conscious they integrate these numbers into stories with stronger character context. It’s less about being provocative and more about performance and presence. I see it as an evolution where women can own their space.”
Malaika also addressed the ongoing association of item songs with the male gaze, acknowledging its prevalence but highlighting her own outlook. She said, “Yes, item songs have often been linked to the male gaze, but I’ve always looked at them differently. For me, dance is about confidence and expression. When I perform, I focus on enjoying the moment and bringing my own energy to it. As long as I feel comfortable and in control, that’s what matters most. It’s about celebrating the art and having fun with it rather than overthinking the labels.”
Her recent appearance in the dance number ‘Poison Baby’ in the film ‘Thamma’, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, marks her continued presence in the industry. She noted that her performance in the song was about “showing that you can stay relevant and passionate at any stage”.
Reflecting on age and longevity in her career, Malaika stated, “age doesn’t define your capacity to perform or inspire.” She emphasised that experience and ongoing enthusiasm are equally important for an artiste.
Malaika’s views come as conversations about representation and meaning in Bollywood dance numbers persist. She underscored the importance of artistic expression and self-assurance for performers, irrespective of prevailing stereotypes.
Alongside her dance career, Malaika is also a judge on the reality series ‘India’s Got Talent’, sharing the panel with Shaan and Navjot Singh Sidhu. Her continued involvement in entertainment highlights her enduring relevance in the industry.
