NEW YORK, NY (TIP): In celebration of National Centenarian Day (observed on September 22), NYC Health + Hospitals honored twelve residents who have reached an incredible life milestone of 100 years or older. There are six centenarians at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur: Pin Giu Liu (100), Mei Dor Chew (101), Sun L. Lum (102), Ru Liao (102), Yung Lin Chou (104), and Kam Po Ma (104). NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View honored four centenarians – Grace Klee (100), Marion Henry (100), Luba Fattinger (102), and Josephine Linton (109) – and NYC Health + Hospitals/Coler recognized two centenarians: Maria Gonzalez (101) and Carmen Augustin (112), the oldest long-term care resident across the health system’s five skilled nursing facilities, and among the city’s oldest living New Yorkers.
“At Gouverneur we are proud to be selected as home for our centenarians. Each of our have contributed so much in their many years and continue to be supported by their loving families and the staff at Gouverneur,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur CEO Susan Sales, MPA, FACHE, LNHA.
“Carmen and Maria hold a very special place in the hearts of our staff and residents. Their lives, their resilience, and the years they have given this world are a legacy in themselves. I feel incredibly fortunate that we have the opportunity to care for them and celebrate their lives,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coler CEO Nataliya Yakovleva, LNHA, LMSW.

Josephine Linton, Luba Fattinger, Grace Klee, and Marion Henry have all reached an incredible milestone, and we are so proud to have them as part of our Sea View family,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View CEO Marisol Arroyo, LNHA, MPH, CPHQ. “Together, they represent more than four centuries of life filled with family, memories, accomplishments, and wisdom. Today, we celebrate not only the number of years they have lived, but the remarkable lives they have built and the joy they continue to bring to our community. Congratulations to our four amazing centenarians!”
NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View centenarian Josephine Linton celebrated her 109th birthday and
received a citation from NYS Senator Andrew Lanza to commemorate her extraordinary milestone.
These individuals are a testament to a lifetime of strength, resilience, and experiences spanning over the last 100 years. Here is some background on this year’s National Centenarian Day honorees:
Carmen Augustin, 112, was born in Haiti, has lived through significant historical events from the rise of aviation, the Spanish flu pandemic, the start of both World Wars, 19 U.S. Presidents, among many others. Augustin enjoys singing in French and Creole with the residents and staff in the Memory Care Unit at Coler.
Josephine Linton, 109, Sea View’s eldest centenarian, was born on January 11, 1917. One of seven siblings, Linton is the proud mother of two children, Dennis Linton and Diane Scotto. During her working years, she was a seamstress specializing in children’s clothing. Her hobbies have included knitting, dancing, reading, and enjoying the company of those around her.
Kam Po Ma, 104, resides in Gouverneur. Born in China, he worked as a rice miller. He is a very optimistic person and enjoys playing Mah Jong, Chinese chess and playing cards.
Yung Lin Chou, 104, resides in Gouverneur. Born in Shanghai, China, he worked as a chef. He raised four children and lived in both Taiwan and the United States. His life is a testament to perseverance and adaptability.
Luba Fattinger, 102, resides in Sea View. Originally from Yugoslavia, Fattinger came to the United States at a young age. She has a passion for cooking and baking and especially enjoys spending time with friends, including sharing coffee together almost every day.
Sun L. Lum, 102, resides in Gouverneur. Born in China, she spent her life as a seamstress, finding solace in her family and her garden. Lum’s quiet strength and passion for cooking reflect a life rooted in tradition but driven by love, ensuring that those around her were nourished both in body and spirit.
Ru Liao, 102, resides in Gouverneur. Born in China, she grew up in Chinatown and has four children, three daughters and one son. She enjoys exercising and remains active to this day.
Maria Gonzalez, 101, resides in Coler. Born in Puerto Rico, Gonzalez brings vibrant energy and warmth wherever she goes. A true social butterfly, she loves listening to lively salsa and merengue music, relaxing with a good movie, and enjoying her favorite treat: a warm cup of coffee paired with fresh muffins.
Mei Dor Chew, 101, resides in Gouverneur. Born in the United States and raised in China, she worked as a seamstress for six days a week to raise her family. Through hard work and determination, she raised three children, all graduating from college. She also loves to play Mah Jong.
Grace Klee, 100, resides in Sea View. A life-long Staten Islander, Klee has always had a special love for dogs and enjoys the companionship and joy they bring.
Marion Henry, 100, resides in Sea View. A Staten Island native, she has a fun-loving spirit and enjoys settling in with a good action movie. She especially loves the excitement, adventure, and suspense that keep her entertained from beginning to end.
Pin Giu Liu, 100, resides in Gouverneur. Born in China, she enjoys staying active through exercise and socializing with peers. Liu can often be seen enjoying a game of Mah Jong, exercising her artistic expressions through painting, or watching classic movies and nature videos.
“Congratulations to all twelve New Yorkers celebrating this extraordinary milestone, including the six centenarians at Gouverneur here in our community,” said NYC Council Member Christopher Marte. “Their stories of raising families, working hard, and finding joy in everyday life are a wonderful reminder of how much our oldest neighbors have to share. I’m grateful to the staff and caregivers who support them every day, and wish each honoree continued happiness, good health, and time with the people they love.”

Both are residents of Coler in my Assembly district, and their lives and experiences are a gift to our community. When asked about the secret to their longevity, most attributed daily exercise or movement, healthy eating, laughter, and fun.
