Abhijeet Sawant reunites with Amit Sana for Indian Idol Legends Return

Two decades after defining the blueprint of Indian reality television music, Indian Idol Season 1 winner Abhijeet Sawant is returning to the stage that launched his career. Sawant, whose 2005 triumph turned Indian Idol into a national phenomenon, leads the line-up for Sony Entertainment Television’s upcoming franchise extension, Indian Idol Legends Return.
The singer’s comeback generated an immediate reunion on set, drawing praise from his Season 1 co-finalist and runner-up, Amit Sana. Reflecting on Sawant’s central role in building the brand — and the enduring cultural impact of his debut single Mohabbatein Lutaunga — Sana highlighted that the franchise “can never be Indian Idol” without Sawant, underscoring the rapport between the show’s original breakout finalists.
Joining the panel, judge Himesh Reshammiya marked the occasion with a musical entry, declaring that the show will “become a blockbuster” with Sawant’s return. Following Sawant’s performance of Har Kisi Ko Nahi Milta Pyaar Zindagi Mein, Reshammiya lauded the singer’s long-standing impact, remarking that he had “repaid his debt to Indian Idol” while creating a lasting sensation across the industry.
Reflecting on his return, Sawant described stepping back onto the platform as an “unbelievable rush of emotions,” recalling the nervousness and hope he carried two decades ago. While winning the title granted him his identity, Sawant emphasised that honouring his twenty-year bond with the audience remains his focus, calling the stage his “true home.”
After emerging as the winner of Indian Idol Season 1, Sawant released his debut solo album Aap Kaa Abhijeet, anchored by the breakout lead single Mohabbatein Lutaunga. The track became a defining pop anthem of the mid-2000s, cementing his transition from a reality contest winner to a mainstream recording artiste and establishing the commercial template for non-film music projects in the country.
Beyond his debut album, Sawant expanded his discography with hits like Junoon and playback renditions in mainstream Hindi cinema, including Mar Jaaniyan (Aashiq Banaya Aapne) and Yeh Pal, reinforcing his position as one of Indian pop music’s most recognisable crossover voices.
Produced by Fremantle, Indian Idol Legends Return is scheduled to premiere on October 17, airing weekends at 8 pm.
