Zardari rakes up Kashmir in UN, calls it a symbol of UN system’s failure

UNITED NATIONS (tip): Pakistan once again resorted to its old tactics of raking up Kashmir in the United Nations when its President Asif Ali Zardari sought a solution to the issue under UN resolution. He said Kashmir remains a symbol of failure of the UN system and Pakistan’s principled position on territorial disputes remains a bedrock of its foreign policy.

“Kashmir remains a symbol of failures, rather than strengths of the UN system,” Zardari said in his 20-minute speech at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly here.

“We feel that resolution of these issues can only be arrived in an environment of cooperation,” he said.

“We will continue to support the right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to peacefully choose their destiny in accordance with the UN Security Council’s long-standing resolutions on this matter,” the Pakistani president said.

Later, as Zardari exited the General Assembly hall, he was asked by to comment on his remarks that Kashmir is a “symbol of failure” of the UN system. Zardari, however, did not clarify or elaborate further.

Pakistan’s foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar also did not elaborate on the president’s remarks on Kashmir. “It is in the speech, please read that. He said what he said. It is elaborated enough,” she said.

Pakistan has raked up the issue of Kashmir at the UN forum time and again but India has insisted that it is its internal matter.

  • Obama in new warning to Iran over nuclear ambitions

Obama in new warning to Iran over nuclear ambitions

NEW YORK (TIP): US President Barack Obama has told the United Nations General Assembly that America will do what it must to prevent Iran becoming a nuclear power.

Obama stopped short of agreeing to an Israeli demand that Washington set a specific “red line” that Iran must not cross if it wants to avoid military action.

“The Iranian government continues to prop up a dictator in Damascus and supports terrorist groups abroad. Time and again, it has failed to take the opportunity to demonstrate that its nuclear programme is peaceful and to meet its obligations to the United Nations,” said the US leader.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon warned states against threatening to attack one another.

Obama’s speech follows two weeks of anti-American violence throughout the Muslim world following the the release of excerpts from a film which is said to mock the Prophet Mohammad.

The president made clear his distaste for insults against any religion but denounced the killing of the US ambassador Christopher Stevens and three of his colleagues in Libya.

“As president of our country and commander in chief of our military I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day. And I will always defend their right to do so. There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon or destroy a school in Tunis or cause death and destruction in Pakistan.”
Obama called on world leaders to rally against extremism calling the violence an assault on the very ideals the UN was founded upon.

While Syria is not formally on the General Assembly’s agenda, the US leader once again said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime “must come to an end”.

  • Katrina’s sartorial crisis

    Katrina’s sartorial crisis

Famously, it was poet-thinker Harindanath Chattopadhyay who said, “It’s very difficult to be simple”. By his reckoning , Katrina’s most difficult role is in Ek Tha Tiger. Director Kabir Khan who had earlier insisted on a no-makeup look for Katrina in New York has this time gone even further and insisted that she wear clothes from her own wardrobe which Katrina has happily done. As a friend of the actress says, “Casual wear is Katrina’s biggest joy in life. She hates to dress up and put on makeup. She is happiest when unadorned. No wonder we see her face plastered with a smile during the Ek Tha Tiger schedules.”

Interestingly it’s just the opposite for Katrina in the Yashraj film where she is throughout dressed up to look urbane cool. When it comes to the bitter vibes between Shah Rukh and Salman Khan even their co-star gets caught in the vehement crossfire in a most unexpected way. Hence it’s two different Katrina Kaifs shooting simultaneously with the Khan superstars for the same banner. Sartorially she is as far removed in Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger and Yash Chopra’s untitled film as humanly possible.

Salman’s girl in Tiger is minimalist in every sense. She talks less and wears practical comfortable clothes. Says a source close to Katrina, “Katrina is dressed completely like an average city girl of today on Ek Tha Tiger. That basically means she’s for the first time dressing up for a role exactly the way she dresses up in real life. Katrina even dug into her own wardrobe for this part. For the Yashji’s film Katrina was given a far more chic appearance. Even when she is doing a casual song in the park the ‘casual’ look has been considerably worked upon.”

U.N. chief duped by prank call from fake Canadian PM

UNITED NATIONS (TIP) – A pair of Canadian radio comedians said on September 28 it took them less then an hour to get U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the phone during international diplomacy’s busiest week – by pretending to be Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Ban was between meetings at the U.N. General Assembly of world leaders on Wednesday when he took a phone call from Quebec comedy duo “The Masked Avengers,” famous for tricking celebrities and politicians.

The pair said in a statement that the impersonator of the prime minister, who is known for his helmet-like coiffure, apologized to Ban for not being able to attend the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York because he was too busy combing his hair with super glue.

During the five-minute discussion, the pair also said they asked him to speak with National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman to press for a Quebec City hockey team. It was at this point in the conversation – which switched between English and French – they said Ban realized he was being pranked.

Ban has more than 120 meetings with world leaders during the U.N. General Assembly this week and his spokesman described the prank call as not “the best use of his time.”

“The Secretary-General quickly understood that it was a prank, and he took it in the way that it was intended, as a joke,” Ban’s spokesman said. “It’s a busy time of year, and the Secretary-General has a considerable amount to do, so it wasn’t the best use of his time, but these things happen.”

The same radio duo, Sébastien Trudel and Marc-Antoine Audette of Montreal radio station CKOI-FM, also duped U.S. Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin just days before the 2008 election by pretending to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy and convincing her to accept an invitation to hunt baby seals.

Chitrangada open to do item numbers

Before turning to the silver screen, Chitrangada Singh never walked the ramp despite being a model as she was not tall enough. “I am happy that as a package of being an actor I also get to do different things.

I never walked the ramp earlier because I was not tall enough,” Chitrangada said after setting the ramp on fire in a sizzling gold and black evening wear by designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi at the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour. After working in advertisements and music videos, the 36-year-old wife of Indian golfer Jyoti Randhawa had impressed everybody with her debut role in Sudhir Mishra’s 2005 film ‘Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi’. While at the backstage of the fashion show, Chitrangada said she felt out of place. “Now I have done enough of catwalks but yet I am nervous everytime I set my foot on the ramp,” she said. Based on the issue of gender politics, Chitrangada would soon be shooting for another Sudhir Mishra film ‘Inkaar’ where she is cast opposite Arjun Rampal. “It is a film about sexual harassment.

It shows that proving rape is easier than proving sexual harassment,” she said. The dusky actress would also be seen in a romantic film ‘I, Me, aur Main’ with John Abraham. For now she is disappointed that the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Joker’, where she had an item number ‘Kaafirana’, bombed at the box office.

Ahmedinejad ignores calls to temper discourse

NEW YORK (TIP): It is his last official visit to the UN General Assembly before his second and final mandate as President runs out in 2013. And Mahmoud Ahmedinejad is giving all the signs of ignoring diplomats’ warnings to avoid incendiary rhetoric during his address to the General Assembly.

At a meeting, the Iranian President said he did not take Israel’s threat to launch a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities seriously.

He spoke of double standards, claiming that some Security Council members turned a blind eye to certain nuclear programs, a clear reference to Israel, while the energy programs of countries like Iran are unjustly impeded.
The US quickly dismissed the comments as “disgusting, offensive and outrageous”, while Israel’s representative described it as an “insult”.

  • MOVIE REVIEW HEROINE

    MOVIE REVIEW HEROINE

    STORY:

Mahi Arora has all the trappings of a Bollywood superstar- name, fame and fortune. Unfortunately she’s also a manic
depressive and constantly courts a death wish. Will Mahi succumb to her weakness or will she manage to stay afloat?

    MOVIE REVIEW:

Multiple National- Award winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar takes vicarious pleasure in giving his audience a ringside view of various walks of life.
His Chandni Bar (2001) dealt with Mumbai dance-bars; Page-3 (2005) showed the shallow side of the media and celebrity circus; Fashion(2008) dealt with the seamier side of the fashion industry. And one must say here that in each of his previous works Madhur was far more in control of proceedings than he is in Heroine; a film that superficially traces Bollywood’s underbelly. The protagonist is Mahi Arora ( Kareena Kapoor), a superstar, who has the world at her feet for a bit in the beginning of this film.
Unfortunately she is also fashionably diagnosed with the bipolar syndrome and is happy to destroy herself in her various relationships. If you are wondering why Sunshine Girl Mahi is on a constant emotional roller-coaster; the narrative tells you that she has had a messed up childhood and hence she has developed this masochistic streak.
So on the one hand, Mahi is cutting ribbons, and shooting for a dozen endorsements. But quickly enough she is also threatened by the arrival of the younger actresses and awards that go missing. To add to her woes, she’s drawn like a moth to a flame to her married co-star Aryan Khanna( Arjun Rampal); a cad. Very clearly the written material at hand draws from unflattering accounts of various real and reel Hindi film heroines of the 80s (unfair to name them because a couple of them are not even around to defend themselves); who were in messy situations with their married co-stars.

In a bid to pack in every piece of studio gossip ever heard; Heroine makes Mahi swing from a relationship with a married actor to another with a successful cricketer ( Randeep Hooda).

Cloning stereotypes of what the middleclass call a liberated; Mahi is also shown smoking, drinking and popping pills so frequently; she seems more like a social hazard than a free-thinking girl. The film is made enjoyable by some pithy dialogue credited to Niranjan Iyengar. Sample this: aap media waalon ko toh script likhna chahiye.

Heroine ne gaadi le li-toh businessman ne gift kardi; diamond khareeda, toh engagement ho gayi; hospital gayi check up ke liye, toh abortion ho gaya, LA gayi toh plastic surgery karva liya, aur Dubai gayi toh, uska rate card ban jata hai. And Heroine would have been crisper had it not digressed to cover every Bollywood insider account.

When the maker attempts to show mainstream cinema’s condescending attitude towards art-house films, precious screen time is lost. Mahi’s attempt to play a prostitute and say scandalous lines are clearly attempted to woo the frontbenchers but the gig lacks conviction.

Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Randeep Hooda, Ranveer Shorey, Divya Dutta

  • Netanyahu draws ‘red line’ on Iran’s nuclear program

Netanyahu draws ‘red line’ on Iran’s nuclear program

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a “red line” for Iran’s nuclear program on Thursday despite a U.S. refusal to set an ultimatum, saying Tehran will be on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon in less than a year.

By citing a time frame in an address to the U.N. General Assembly, Netanyahu – who has clashed with President Barack Obama over the urgency of military action against Iran – appeared to suggest no Israeli attack was imminent before the November 6 U.S. presidential election.

Holding up a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb with a fuse, Netanyahu literally drew a red line just below a label reading “final stage” to a bomb, in which Iran was 90 percent along the path to having sufficient weapons-grade material.

Experts put that at the point that Iran has amassed enough uranium, purified to a level of 20 percent, that could quickly be enriched further and be used to produce an atomic bomb.

Netanyahu told the United Nations he believes that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down in a crisis that has sent jitters across the region and through financial markets.

“And this will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to convince Iran to dismantle its nuclear weapons program altogether,” said the Israeli leader, who later met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for 75 minutes.
Netanyahu’s remarks were the closest he or any top Israeli official has come to publicly laying out precisely which Iranian actions could trigger an Israeli military strike on Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure.

But by referring to a spring or summer 2013 time frame for Iran to complete the next stage of uranium enrichment, the Israeli leader also seemed to dispel, at least for now, fears that Israel might strike Iran before the U.S. presidential election, 40 days away.

Iran’s U.N. mission, responding to Netanyahu’s speech, accused him of making “baseless and absurd allegations” and said the Islamic Republic “reserves its full right to retaliate with full force against any attack.”
Iran called Netanyahu’s visual tool “an unfounded and imaginary graph … used to justify a threat against a founding Member of the United Nations.”

Netanyahu’s remarks also seemed to deliver a two-part message to the Obama White House – along with Iran’s leaders, his most important audience – signalling that the hawkish prime minister wanted an end to the all-too-public war of words with Washington over Iran’s suspected nuclear ambitions.

But they also showed he was not backing down from his insistence that harsher warnings must be delivered to Tehran.
A senior State Department official, making no mention of Netanyahu’s ultimatum, said the Israeli leader and Clinton reaffirmed “that the United States and Israel share the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.”
White House spokesman Jay Carney said he expected Obama to have a follow-up phone call with Netanyahu, probably on Friday.

    ‘NEXT SPRING OR SUMMER’

In his speech, Netanyahu never explicitly said that if Iran crossed his red line, Israel would launch attacks against Iranian nuclear facilities, but he did seem to imply such a threat.

“At this late hour, there is only one way to peacefully prevent Iran from getting atomic bombs. That’s by placing a clear red line on Iran’s nuclear program,” Netanyahu said.

Iran, Netanyahu said, was well into what he defined as the second stage of enrichment – 20 percent purification – and predicted it would complete that stage by “next spring, at most by next summer, at current enrichment rates.”
According to an August report by the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran has stockpiled 91.4 kg (201.5 pounds) of the 20 percent material.

Some experts say Iran would need 200 to 250 kg (440 to 550 pounds) of such material for a weapon. Other experts suggest less might do it. Iran could potentially reach that threshold soon by producing roughly 15 kg (33 pounds) a month, a rate that could be speeded up if it activates new enrichment centrifuges.

According to the U.N. nuclear watchdog, around 25 kg (55.1 pounds) of uranium enriched to a 90 percent purity level would be needed for a single nuclear weapon.

In his own speech to the General Assembly on Tuesday, Obama said the United States will “do what we must” to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and that time is not unlimited for diplomacy to resolve the issue.

Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Russia and China have negotiated with Iran without success in one form or another for nearly 10 years to persuade it to halt its nuclear program in exchange for political and economic incentives.

Addressing the General Assembly on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said disagreement over Iran’s nuclear program had reached “a new, crucial stage,” and urged a diplomatic solution.

The six nations, whose foreign ministers met at the United Nations on Thursday, have held three rounds of talks with Iran this year without visible progress. A U.S. official voiced hope for a fourth round “in the not-too-distant future.”

As if to highlight Netanyahu’s concerns that tougher U.N. sanctions against Iran are unlikely due to Russian and Chinese resistance, the group failed to agree on any plan for further steps against Tehran, envoys said.
Obama set no ultimatum or clear “red line” of his own, despite public urging from Netanyahu over the past several weeks that has aggravated strains between the two leaders.

    ‘CHART A PATH FORWARD’

Seeking re-election, Obama has faced criticism from Republican challenger Mitt Romney that the president is being too tough with Israel and not tough enough with Iran.

“I very much appreciate the president’s position, as does everyone in my country. We share the goal of stopping Iran’s nuclear weapons program,” Netanyahu said. “Israel is in discussions with the United States over this issue, and I am confident we can chart a path forward together,” he said.

He spoke a day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the General Assembly. Ahmadinejad said on Monday he did not take seriously the threat that Israel could launch a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
He also said Israel has no roots in the Middle East and would be “eliminated.”

Obama has drawn criticism from Republicans for opting not to meet Netanyahu or other foreign leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly and focus instead on his re-election campaign. Netanyahu has faced opposition within his cabinet and from former Israeli security chiefs to any go-it-alone attack on Iran. Opinion polls show Israelis are wary of any such strike by their military, whose capability of destroying underground Iranian facilities is limited.

Israel, believed to have the Middle East’s only atomic arsenal, sees a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to its existence and has expressed frustration over the failure of diplomacy and sanctions to rein in Tehran’s nuclear activity.

Iran says it is enriching uranium only for peaceful energy and medical purposes, not for nuclear bombs.

Kashmir a symbol of UN’s failure, says Zardari

NEW YORK (TIP): Pakistan on Wednesday once again resorted to its old tactics of raking up Kashmir in the United Nations when its President Asif Ali Zardari sought a solution to the issue under UN resolution.

Later, as Zardari exited the General Assembly hall, he was asked to comment on his remarks that Kashmir is a “symbol of failure” of the UN system.

US President Barack Obama has also ruled out any “outside” solution to the Kashmir issue, saying in an interview in July that disputes between India and Pakistan can only be resolved among themselves.

Highlighting his country’s foreign policy towards its neighbors in the sub-continent in his address, Zardari said Pakistan approaches its relations with India on mutual trust.

“Our principled position on territorial disputes remains a bedrock of our foreign policy,” he added.
Noting that contacts between the leadership of India and Pakistan are “expanding”, Zardari said he was “encouraged” by his discussions with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month in Tehran.

The meeting with Singh in Iran on the sidelines of the NAM Summit was the fifth one in four years for him, Zardari informed the General Assembly.

He said by normalizing trade relations, Pakistan wants to create a regional South Asian narrative, which would provide an environment that would mutually benefit the countries of the region.

Zardari acknowledged that the road ahead will have pitfalls, including the tendency to respond to failure through blame.

“Pakistan does not blame others for the challenges it faces. We believe we should look for win-win solutions,” he said.

He stressed that “regional cooperation and connectivity will bring us closer and bind us together. It will make us stakeholders in each other’s futures.”

Pakistan has learnt a lesson from the past 30 years that while history cannot be changed, the future can be “brighter, more prosperous and more secure, not only for Pakistanis, but for all people of the region, and indeed the world.”

    Mathai rebuts Zardari’s Kashmir

New York (TIP): India Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai on September 27 said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have peacefully chosen their destiny in accordance with democratic practices and they continue to do so.

The comment was in response to the Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari’s reference to the disputed Himalayan state in his United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) address.

Addressing the interactive session of UNGA Mathai said, “Well, we have seen the reference to Jammu and Kashmir in the statement of the President of Pakistan. You know, our principled position on the issue has been consistent and is well known.”

Earlier, Pakistan raked up the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at the UNGC with President Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday expressing his country’s support for the self-determination of the region.

“We will continue to support the right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to peacefully choose their destiny in accordance with the UN Security Council’s long-standing resolutions on this matter. Kashmir remains a symbol of the failures, rather than strengths, of the UN system. We feel that resolution of these issues can only be arrived in an environment of cooperation,” said Zardari.

He, however called Pakistan’s approach to India as one of mutual trust.

Mathai on the issue of Russian support for India’s UNSC candidature for G4 said, “You see, on the G4 process, we have in fact issued a communiqué…a press statement after our meeting yesterday. I think it should be available.”
“That, I think, clarifies where we are going as part of the G4 process. What I was referring to was a reference, which the Russian Foreign Minister made during a BRICS FMs meeting which I attended on behalf of India.”

He further added, “In his statement, the Russian Foreign Minister made a categorical statement that he supports India’s candidature for permanent membership of the Security Council. So this is the context in which that statement was made.”

Concluding his speech Mathai asserted, “There, while debating this issue on the general title of UN Security Council reform which was part of a larger discussion on reform of institutions of global governance; we also discussed the IMF and other issues.”

ANISTON bans mom from attending her wedding

Actress Jennifer Aniston has reportedly banned her ailing mother Nancy, 76, from attending her wedding as she has been talking about her daughter’s private life very openly.

Engaged to actor Justin Theroux, Aniston had a rocky relationship with her mother ever since she blabbed too much about her personal matters in a 1996 television interview. “Being at Jennifer’s wedding to Justin was one of Nancy’s greatest late-in-life dreams, but now that dream is shattered,” showbizspy.com quoted a source as saying. ”

But when Nancy started asking a bunch of questions about the upcoming event, it set off an alarm in Jennifer’s head. She realized her mom was gossiping way too much about her wedding plans. “Now she has banned Nancy from the nuptials, just like she banned her from her wedding to Brad Pitt back in 2000,” the source added.

Theroux, 41, proposed to Aniston, 43, on his birthday last month and told her he wants to have children with her. “After her star-studded $1 million wedding to Pitt, Aniston now wants a much less formal and less publicized ceremony. And she believes Nancy’s loose lips are a threat to her privacy,” said the source. The couple are reportedly planning to walk down the aisle in December.

NEW YORK (TIP): After Brazil and China, a recently launched pilot program to waive off interview for an American visa is gaining popularity in India as the US government intends to target the country to increase tourist flow in the years to come.

In the brief span of a few months, since its launch in April, the US mission in India processed some 4,000 visa applications under its interview waiver pilot program (IWPP), the State Department said in a report.

China and Brazil were the first two countries where IWPP was launched January 20, by the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security as part of its effort to streamline processing for low-risk visa applicants.
The pilot program is for two years.

“The IWPP is very popular in China and Brazil, where over 80 percent of IWPP cases are processed.
State’s Mission (the Embassy and constituent consulates) in Brazil processed almost 33,000 IWPP cases between March 2012 and June 2012, while Mission China processed over 20,000 IWPP cases between February 2012 and June 2012,” the report said.

“The IWPP is gaining popularity in other key markets, including India.

Mission India processed almost 4,000 IWPP applications since it launched its program in April 2012,” the State Department said, adding that the program has been expanded to other countries including Mexico and Germany in July.
According to latest figures available from the Department of Commerce, visitors from India spent a record-breaking USD 4.4 billion in the United States in 2011, an increase of more than 10 per cent from 2010.

Visitation from Indian nationals is expected to increase by more than 30 per cent over the next five years, the Commerce Department report said, adding that the annual US travel and tourism exports to India have risen by double-digits in seven of the last eight years.

The State Department is in front of this demand – visa applicants in India typically wait less than a week for an interview appointment and spend less than an hour in the consular section, and 97 per cent of visas are processed within 24 hours, the State Department report said.

The State Department said it is taking steps to anticipate surges in visa demand from countries exhibiting strong economic growth.

  • MOVIE REVIEW DREDD 3D

    MOVIE REVIEW DREDD 3D

Cast: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rachel Wood
    Direction: Pete Travis
    Genre: Sci-Fi
    Duration: 1 hour 35 minutes

    STORY:

The future of this futuristic city looks unsure. Why? Blame it on the gangsters, the war lords and the drug peddlers.

    MOVIE REVIEW:

Even before you step into the theatre make sure you know what lies in store for you. Action and loads of noise. But then if you are an ardent fan of the 2000 AD comic strip titled Judge Dredd — yes, yet another comic book hero comes alive on screen — nothing is a wee bit confusing for you. You know the judges, the jury members, the executioners, the brokers of law etc are all but one people in this future city of America — Cops. And if Judge Dredd ( Karl Urban) is who we are talking about, the word is super cop.

As the uniformed judge — who looks all smart, hi-tech and confident — Karl makes sure justice prevails in every nook and corner of the Peach Tree. Watch out for the shielding of the Peach Tree scene.

In fact, the onus of giving us all that extra dose of action lies with him… and his trainee partner, Anderson ( Olivia Thirlby). Olivia, on the other hand, plays the perfect, obedient helper with an extra ability to predict the past… and sometimes the unsaid. But then the one leading to all that mess is the bad girl, Ma-Ma and her gangsters.
Lena Headey with her bloody eyes and scared face is mean, aggressive and dangerous. The three leads indeed make up for an otherwise great (edge-of-the-sea kinda) plot. So as long as the bullets keep whizzing — there are a couple of slow, dead and non-action moments– Dredd 3D has things going its way.

And if not anything else, it’s over to the scenes that show junkies falling off skyscrapers in super slow motion… stopping time and creating some great, stunning (and brutal too) visuals in 3D.

NATO worried by Libya armed groups, offers security help

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): The head of NATO expressed concern on September 28 about armed groups operating outside government control in Libya and said he was encouraging Tripoli to accept an offer of help to reform its security sector.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen made the offer to Libyan leader Mohammed Magarief after this month’s attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, which killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

“Obviously, it is a matter of concern that individual and independent armed groups operate without superior control in Libya,” Rasmussen told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He said he had offered NATO help to improve security in Libya in a meeting with Magarief at the United Nations. “We have a lot of expertise when it comes to reforms of the defense and security sector and also when it comes to the reintegration of former freedom fighters to a unified security structure in the new Libya,” he said.
“If the new Libya authorities so wish, NATO stands ready to help them in reforming their defense and security sector. We take that very seriously.”

Rasmussen said he was encouraged that the new Libyan government had taken “a number of steps to put these individual groups under control with the aim of creating a strong unified security structure.”

NATO mounted a seven-month campaign of air strikes on Libya last year that helped bring about the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi by rebel groups. It first made the offer to support security reform last year, but Libya has not yet accepted. In New York on Monday, Magarief personally apologized to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the consulate incident, which Washington says was a terrorist attack. Magarief has said that some of those arrested for involvement in the attack were not Libyans and were linked to al Qaeda, the radical Islamist organization responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.
Libya’s government has sought to impose order on armed groups and the military has said it has removed the heads of two of the most powerful militias operating in Benghazi.

  • Why eat three bananas a day

Why eat three bananas a day

British and Italian researchers have found that eating three bananas cuts the risk of a stroke.

They said that having one banana for breakfast, one for lunch and one in the evening would provide enough potassium to reduce the chances of suffering a blood clot on the brain by around 21 per cent.

The findings suggest that thousands of strokes could be prevented by the consumption of other potassium-rich foods such as spinach, nuts, milk, fish and lentils, reports the Daily Mail.

Although some previous studies have suggested bananas could be important for controlling blood pressure and preventing strokes, results have not always been consistent.

In the latest research, scientists analyzed data from eleven different studies – dating back to the mid-Sixties – and pooled the results to get an overall outcome.

They found a daily potassium intake of around 1,600 mg, less than half the UK recommended daily amount for an adult of 3,500mg, were enough to lower stroke risk by more than a fifth.

The average banana contains around 500 milligrams of potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure and controls the balance of fluids in the body.

Too little potassium can lead to an irregular heartbeat, irritability, nausea and diarrhea.

Researchers from the University of Warwick and the University of Naples said, “Potassium intake in most countries is well below the recommended daily amount.”

But if consumers ate more potassium-rich foods and also reduced their salt intake, the annual global death toll from strokes could be cut by more than a million a year.

    U.S. WITHDRAWS TRIPOLI EMBASSY STAFF

Underscoring continued security worries, the United States said on Thursday it was temporarily withdrawing more staff from its embassy in Libya’s capital Tripoli, but hoped they could return early next week.

Rasmussen reiterated that NATO had no intention to intervene in Syria as it had in Libya, but stood ready to defend NATO member and Syria’s neighbor Turkey, should this be necessary.

“We do believe that the way forward in Syria is a political solution,” he said. “Syria is a very complex society, religiously, ethnically, politically. Any foreign intervention may have unpredictable repercussions.”

Rasmussen said an October 9-10 meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels would discuss a decision to halt joint operations by NATO-led foreign troops and Afghan forces in Afghanistan after a spate of killings of NATO soldiers by Afghans they were training.

He stressed that the measure was “temporary,” but could not say when it might be lifted. “That decision will be taken on the ground based on a complete evaluation of the security situation.” The U.S. Department of Defense said on Thursday that NATO-led forces were resuming operations alongside their Afghan counterparts in growing numbers, a week after commanders curtailed some joint missions due to a surge in insider attacks and tensions over an anti-Islamic video. The Pentagon did not provide precise figures on the extent of the increase in partnering since the new policy was enacted. But U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in Washington that most units in Afghanistan were conducting “normal partnered operations at all levels.

Rasmussen said joint operations remained an important element in training Afghan forces to ensure they can take complete responsibility for security and allow foreign troops to end their combat role by the end of 2014 as planned.

Chinese FM Yang tells UN Japan stole disputed islands from China

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): The islands at the center of a territorial dispute between Japan and China were seized from the Chinese in 1895 and the Japanese government’s recent purchase of them is “illegal and invalid,” Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said on Thursday.

“The moves taken by Japan are totally illegal and invalid. They can in no way change the historical fact that Japan stole the Diaoyudao and affiliated islands and that China has sovereignty over them,” Yang told the United Nations General Assembly, using the Chinese name for what Japan calls the Senkakus.

Yang urged Tokyo to resolve the issue through negotiations.

UNGA High-level Debate Recognizes Climate Change Effects on Vulnerable States

New York (TIP): During the second day of the High-level Debate of the 67th session UN General Assembly (UNGA), several speakers expressed commitments to address climate change. Others expressed concerns about the effects of climate change on vulnerable States and highlighted the potential for climate change to contribute to conflicts.
Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, President of Mexico, expressed Mexico’s commitment to tackle climate change, and emphasized that countries can simultaneously mitigate climate change impacts and tackle poverty. Viktor Yanukovych, President of Ukraine, recognized climate change as a priority task, noting Ukraine’s voluntary commitments to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions 20% by 2020.

Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, stated that while progress had been made at the UNFCCC meetings, more commitments were needed to reduce carbon emissions and mobilize financial and technological resources for adaptation among the most vulnerable countries, particularly the least developed countries (LDCs), the Landlocked Developing Countries and the small island developing States (SIDS). Mario Monti, Prime Minister of Italy, also expressed concern for the future of the most vulnerable countries, particularly small island States. He said all countries have a joint responsibility to address climate change, including the sustainable development of oceans and the preservation of their biodiversity, ecosystems and resilience. Cheick Modibo Diarra, President of Mali, noted the effects of climate change on both ecosystems and livelihoods, particularly in vulnerable countries. Anote Tong, President of Kiribati, described climate change as “the greatest moral challenge of our time.” He stressed the need for urgent, intensified action to address climate change and sea level rise, noting the threats it poses to the long-term survival of Kiribati and the world. He also called for development assistance on adaptation.

King Mswati III of Swaziland called for the adoption of environmentally-friendly technologies to address climate change concerns and welcomed commitments made under the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Initiative.
Some speakers noted connections between climate change and conflict. Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya, underlined that strengthening global institutions on biodiversity, climate change and environment were critical in avoiding conflicts and disputes. Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia, noted that climate change threatens food security, affecting development. Titus Corlatean, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, said climate change has affected water availability, and urged action to avoid the potential for future conflicts over lack of water resources.

  • Improve posture FOR A FLAT TUMMY

Improve posture FOR A FLAT TUMMY

All of us wish for a washboard tummy but the very thought of all those sit-ups and stomach crunches put us off, right?

Well, there are other means of reducing your paunch, or rather, of stopping it from getting bigger, without even stepping into the gym. Check them out:

    Improve your posture

If you spend long hours sitting at a desk, in front of a screen, chances are that you slouch, thus leaving the stomach loose and bulging. The first step towards a taut tummy is to never slouch, whether sitting, standing or walking. Says Merin, physiotherapist, Biorhythm fitness centre,”Weak back muscles affect the abs as well.

Something you can do while at your desk is to maintain a straight back, yet comfortable position. A chin up, shoulders back, stomach in posture while walking not only makes you look fitter but makes your tummy look flatter.”

    Do stretch exercises at work

While at your workseat, stretch your back and pull in the stomach. Hold your breath and release. Sway from side to side a few times. Rest your arms on the armrest of the chair and lift your feet, one at a time. Hold for a few seconds and release. Repeat every half hour or as often as you can. There are also forced breathing techniques for the stomach which you can learn from a professional.

    Walk to work

“A common misconception is that stomach crunches are the only way to a flat stomach. Stomach fat is just one part of general body fat; only it shows more,” points out Merin. She recommends walking or cycling instead of driving if your workplace is near, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator wherever possible.

A bulging tummy is the result of poor distribution of fat in the body, not necessarily a sign of obesity. Try out these tricks and see if you take off a few inches from your waist!
