9 MEALS A DAY CUTS CHOLESTEROL, FLAB

Suggesting that eating little and often is healthier for us, experts have said that we should eat as many as nine meals every day.

They say this may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and even encourage weight loss, the Daily Mail reported.
“Splitting food intake so we eat many times a day will have metabolic benefits over and above the same food consumed in a small number of meals,” the paper quoted Dr Susan Jebb, head of the Medical Research Council’s Human Nutrition Research Unit, as saying.

In one of the latest studies, scientists from Imperial College, London, compared the diets of more than 2,000 people from the UK, Japan, China and the U.S.

While they all had the same calorie intake and food, half the participants ate fewer than six times a day, while the remainder ate more than six times.

Results show the first group had a significantly higher systolic blood pressure – the pressure that blood exerts on vessels while the heart is beating – compared with the more frequent eaters. They were also significantly heavier.
Another research from the University of Athens, based on more than 2,000 children aged nine to 13, found those who ate five times a day were 32.6 per cent less likely to have high levels of bad cholesterol than those who ate fewer meals.

Meanwhile, eating at least four small meals a day – a ‘nibbling’ diet, as researchers called it – sped up metabolism and lowered the risk of obesity, according to a Maastricht University study.

It’s not clear why eating more often has these benefits, but one theory is that frequent meals prevent a high influx of fatty acids – compounds that are released from foods and can lead to a build-up of fats in the arteries, and also contribute to high cholesterol levels.

The build-up can also narrow the blood vessels, leading to high blood pressure.

Eating more frequently during the day means there are no sudden spikes of fatty acids, enabling the body to deal with the intake more effectively.

Eating more frequently may boost energy levels, suggests a study from the University Of Montana. When forest firefighters were given standard lunches or ration ‘grazing’ packs designed to be eaten over a long period of time, those who had grazing packs did 25 per cent more work than the lunchbox workers.

The program was launched in the presence of Consulate General Prabhu Dayal and it went on to exhibit the rich cultural heritage India is renowned for. Queens College President Mr. James Muyskens presided over the event by providing a description of what the events throughout the year will comprise of.

The student body representatives of Queens College present at the event said that it is an honor to have India recognized as the country of the Year of India. Student Body representative Sumit Singh explains, “The focus is going to not just be on Indian culture, so people will be more aware of other factors of India such as economy, politics, films, etc. which will help them in understanding our culture better. ”

Recognizing a country each year is a tradition and an important part of the academic calendar at Queens College. The college recognized China in 2010 and Turkey in 2012. Mr. Muyskens told The Indian Panorama that the campus unanimously chose India as the country to focus in 2012. “We asked the campus several years back which countries do we have expertise in at the campus, which country will the students and others would like to focus on and study.

Selecting a country meant, we would focus that year on its religion, politics, history and the current world we live in. And so they all selected India. The next year we have Brazil the South Africa but I am especially excited about India. I think there is no place more exciting than India,” said Mr. Muyskens.

Mr. Muyskens also stressed on the importance of holding such events especially today’s scenario. “It is incredibly important to have such events. The borough of Queens is a very diverse borough. We have people from all over the world. And that is the future. We must have a genuine understanding of all countries and not just be shallow. To really understand each country in depth we need events like this.”

Mr. Dayal also affirmed this thought by saying, “I think it is very important to hold such events because they reach out to young people. And our youth is the torchbearer for the future. And we feel that it is extremely important that a college that is as highly ranked as Queens College has taken this unique step to recognize this year as the ‘Year of India’.”

  • Hair smoothening better than straightening

    Hair smoothening better than straightening

Experts suggest smoothening over straightening to re-texture your unruly locks. Find out why.

Straightening hair is often our last resort or probably the first remedy to rectify frizzy and fuzzy hair. While a few do this to tame their hair, a majority get their hair straightened to sport a trendy look. But does straightening give your hair a fake texture? Is smoothening hair a better option than straightening?

“Smoothening is always a better option than straightening. Smoothening makes hair look natural soft, unlike the results from straightening that can give the hair pin-straight tips, which contributes a fake look,” says Theertha Sasidharan, a beauty expert.

Hair stylists can sweep your wavy or curly hair into straight, soft and shiny strands, all with the iron rod and chemicals. “Most of my customers prefer to have a naturally straight hair, which is why we advise smoothening, though the process and duration of the result are the same,” says beauty expert Beena.

However, Beena warns that the effects of smoothening are better when it is done on thin hair, than thick locks. Though most of them walk in to get their hair straightened, when informed about the end-results of smoothening, they would not hesitate to experiment and invest in smoothening.

For extremely curly hair, she suggests straightening therapy. “This of course is similar to straightening, but the product used is different,” she adds.

Hina-Bilawal love rumour sets Pak abuzz

ISLAMABAD (TIP): It’s a story that’s got all the makings of a huge political scandal. A rumoured romance between Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the attractive and much-toasted foreign minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, has got all of Pakistan talking. And it’s reportedly prompted her husband to seek her phone details.

Officials denied the affair, but some privately confirmed that Khar’s millionaire husband Firoze Gulzar on Tuesday submitted an application to the Federal Investigation Agency for subscriber details and call data record of two “suspected” numbers.

Discussed in hushed tones in Islamabad for the past couple of weeks, the romance came out in public following a story in a Bangladeshi weekly tabloid, Blitz. According to the article, the 24-year-old chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party and the minister, 11 years older, are in love and plan to settle in Switzerland.

President Asif Ali Zardari, it says, is vehemently opposed to his son’s eagerness to marry the mother-of-two. He fears such a move would jeopardize Bilawal’s political career and spell doom for the party.

The report claims Zardari caught the two in a compromising position at his residence and in an effort to break them up, unsuccessfully used government machinery against Gulzar’s business interests.

  • The story of MAA VAISHNO DEVI

The story of MAA VAISHNO DEVI

The abode of the Goddess Vaishno Devi is in the Moutains of Trikuta Hills, in the Jammu and Kashmir State of Northern India. Ma resides in a beautiful cave in the form of 3 ‘Pindis’ namely, Maha-Kali, Maha-Laxmi and Maha-Sarawati. Ma Vaishno Devi took birth in the South of India in the home of Ratnakar Sagar, Her worldly parents had remained childless for a long time. Ratnakar had promised, the night before the birth of the Divine child, that he would not come in the way of whatever his child desired. Ma Vaishno Devi was called Trikuta as a child.

Later She was called Vaishnavi because of Her taking birth from Lord Vishnu’s lineage. When Trikuta was 9 years old, She sought her father’s permission for doing penance on the sea-shore.

Trikuta prayed to Lord Vishnu in the form of Rama. During Shree Ram’s search for Sita, He reached the sea-shore along with His army.

His eyes fell on this Divine Girl in deep meditation. Trikuta told Shree Ram that She had accepted Him as Her husband. Shree Ram told Her that during this Incarnation He had vowed to be faithful to only Sita.

However the Lord assured Her that in ‘Kaliyuga’ He would manifest as ‘Kalki’ and would marry Her. In the meantime Shree Ram asked Trikuta to meditate in the cave found in the Trikuta Range of Manik Mountains, situated in Northern India. Ma decided to observe the ‘Navratra’ for the Victory of Shree Ram against Ravan. Hence one reads the Ramayana during the 9 days of Navratra, in remembrance of the above connection.

Shree Ram promised that the whole world would sing Ma Vaishno Devi’s praise. Trikuta was to become famous as Vaishno Devi and would become immortal forever.

With the passage of time many more stories about the Mother Goddess emerged. One such story is about Shree-Dhar. The above story is about 700 years old. Shri-Dhar was an ardent devotee of Ma Vaishno Devi. He resided in a village called Hansali, 2 Km away from the present Katra town. Once Ma appeared to him in the form of a young bewitching girl. The young girl asked the humble Pandit to hold a ‘Bhandara’. (A feast to feed the mendicants and devotees) The Pandit set out to invite people from the village and near-by places.

He also invited ‘Bhairav Nath’. Bhairav Nath asked Shri-Dhar how he was planning to fulfill the requirements. He reminded him of the bad consequences in case of failure. As Panditji was lost in worry, the Divine girl appeared and told Him not to be despondent as everything had been arranged. She asked that over 360 devotees be seated in the small hut.

True to Her word the Bhandara went smoothly with food and place to spare. Bhairav Nath admitted that the girl had supernatural powers and decided to test Her further. Bhairav Nath followed the Divine girl to Trikuta Hills.

For 9 months Bhairav Nath was searching for the mystic girl in the mountains. He saw the ‘girl’ hitting the stone with an arrow and water gushing out of the stone. He ‘saw’ the ‘girl’ sitting on the mountain top. When Bhairav went to that place, he saw footprints on the stone. Bhairav wondered how the ‘girl’ had eluded him for 9 months! Wondering whether she was hiding in the cave (Adi Kunwaari), he decide to enter it.

On seeing Bhairav entering the cave, Ma tore open a path behind the cave, by Her trident and came out. Ma reached the beautiful cave in the Trikuta mountain. She urged Bhairav not to follow Her.

But he disobeyed. The Goddess took the shape of Fierce Chandi and killed Bhairav. The head of Bhairav fell on the mountain peak. Bhairav had Spiritual powers. So though his head was severed, he still retained consciousness. Bhairav repented for his conduct. Ma forgave him and granted him the boon that whosoever worshipped Her would later visit his shrine. Meanwhile, Pandit Shree- Dhar became impatient. He started to march towards Trikuta Mountain on the same path that he had witnessed in a dream.

He ultimately reached the cave mouth. He made a daily routine of worshipping the ‘Pindis’ in several ways.
His worship pleased the Goddess. She appeared in front of him and blessed him. Since that day, Shree-Dhar and his descendants have been worshipping the Goddess Mother Vaishno Devi.

Care should be taken when handling the auto drivers since tourists tend to get ripped off as the autos don’t work on meters.

    Places to Visit

Primarily being a hill station, summer is the best time to explore this town. The view of the town is supposed to best from the top of Mahatma Gandhi Park also called Ratnagiri hill. Another place to visit would be Kemmanagundi which is about 57 km from Chikmagalur. The road bumpy and takes about 3 hrs to reach there.

A jeep can be hired there to visit Hebbe falls, which takes another 3 hrs for the round trip. It would be sensible to cover Mullayanagiri, Kemmanagundi and the falls on the same day, which would take an additional 5 hrs.

    Baba Budan Giri

Baba Budan Giri is one of the most visited tourist places in Chikmagalur.

This peak is located just 28 kms north from the town of Chikmagalur. Named after the Muslim Saint Baba Budan, the peak is also said to have some association with the Hindu God Guru Dattatreya, so it’s considered both sacred for Hindu and Muslim.

Baba Budan Giri, also known as Dattagiri has a height of 1895 meters above the sea level. Close to this peak are the three caves said to have been sanctified by three siddhas containing their icons & tombs. Designed in unique manner, the image depicts the Goddess with four hands holding the Shanka, Chakra, Sri Chakra and Gayathrimantra. Situated in middle of thick forests and valleys, visitors are sure to enjoy the scenic view of nature while visiting Horanadu.

Adventurous people can always hike through the mountains or set up camps on one of the numerous peaks. Visiting these places should take you about half a day. Food is not a problem as the budget traveler can look out for the Kamat chain of Hotels to get his money’s worth. Coffee being very potent in these parts is the first thing one would want to buy and is available in the town market. • A HELMET THAT CAN SEND SOS ON CRASH

A HELMET THAT CAN SEND SOS ON CRASH

LONDON (TIP): The brainchild of an India-born chef for top cyclists, a new ‘life saver’ bike helmet that connects with your phone and alerts emergency services in case of an accident is set to hit the markets soon. The potentially life-saving smart phone app, which can detect a crash and then alert the emergency services, has been designed for bike riders.

The clever application pairs through Bluetooth with a motion detector which is attached to the rider’s helmet and senses the crash. The invention has been created by Oklahoma-based software company ICEdot in the US.

The detector, named the ICEdot Crash Sensor, can even evaluate the severity of the crash depending on the force of the rider’s fall, the Daily Mail reported. Chris Zenthoefer, ICEdot’s CEO, said: “The idea came from Biju Thomas, a prominent chef for a lot of top cyclists.

He was on a solo ride and crashed and thought if the crash had been any worse, nobody would have know where he was located.” “We were then introduced and it became clear that the pairing of his idea with ICEdot existing technology were a perfect match,” Zenthoefer said.

Following an accident the app will prompt the phone to sound an alarm and a countdown, which can be set to between 15 and 60 seconds, is initiated. If the alarm is not deactivated the app will contact an SOS service and relay vital information. Using GPS coordinates the device can reveal the user’s location and the severity of their condition.

What’s more, it can even pass on crucial medical details, for example if the user has diabetes or any allergies.
If the fall is not critical, the crash victim can simply cease the countdown on their phone and cancel the process. The cost of the motion sensor device, the smart phone app and a one year membership to the ICEdot service is estimated to be about 120 pounds. The device should be on the market in April next year.

A 4-D clock that will tick even after end of universe

WASHINGTON (TIP): Scientists have proposed to build the first ever 4-D space-time crystal clock that they claim will keep accurate time forever, even after the heat-death of the universe.

This is the “wow” factor behind a device known as a “space-time crystal,” a four-dimensional crystal that has periodic structure in time as well as space, scientists said.

Researcher Xiang Zhang from Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division, who led this research, and his group, have come up with an experimental design to build a crystal that is discrete both in space and time – a space-time crystal.

However, there are also practical and important reasons for constructing a space-time crystal.

Einstein’s brain now an interactive app; shell out $10 and have a look

CHICAGO (TIP): The brain that revolutionized physics now can be downloaded as an app for $9.99. But it won’t help you win at Angry Birds. While Albert Einstein’s genius isn’t included, an exclusive iPad application launched on Tuesday promises to make detailed images of his brain more accessible to scientists than ever before. Teachers, students and anyone who’s curious also can get a look.

A medical museum under development in Chicago obtained funding to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein’s brain after his death in 1955.

The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner’s brain as if they were looking through a microscope. “I can’t wait to find out what they’ll discover,” said Steve Landers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago who designed the app. “I’d like to think Einstein would have been excited.” After Einstein died, a pathologist named Thomas Harvey performed an autopsy, removing the great man’s brain in hopes that future researchers could discover the secrets behind his genius.

  • Sri Lanka prevail in Super Over

Sri Lanka prevail in Super Over

Pallekele (TIP): Tillakaratne Dilshan, who had scored 76 off 53 in regulation time, set himself under the ball at long-off, turning side ways to make sure he knew where the boundary cushions were – they were six inches from his toenails – and took the catch after the ball had passed his body and had almost entered the air space beyond the boundary.

Had Dilshan missed that, this Martin Guptill hit off Lasith Malinga would have left New Zealand needing two off the last ball of the Super Over.

The catch sealed Sri Lanka’s win. Such were the margins of a freak match that was tied with a freak run-out off the last ball. About 40 minutes ago, Sri Lanka were 143 for 3 after 16.3 overs, the same score that New Zealand had after 16.3.

New Zealand would have been disappointed with the 31 they got after that, considering the start given to them by Rob Nicol, in association with Guptill and Brendon McCullum.

With the ball, though, Southee and James Franklin pulled things back against the faltering hosts, who lost two batsmen to run-outs.

Only 30 runs had come in 5.3 overs leading to that even point, which had put Sri Lanka under some pressure. Southee added to it with an over of yorkers to leave them needing 21 off the last two.

Ross Taylor risked bowling Franklin, who had helped them win a similar chase recently against India. Dilshan slog-swept the first ball for a six. On the next ball, though, he took an ill-advised second and even a desperate dive couldn’t save him.

Thisara Perera scooped Franklin for a four later in the over. At eight required from seven balls, Perera was one delivery from making Southee’s last over irrelevant, but Franklin’s slower ball arrived after he had finished his swing, and it had enough legs to tickle the bail out of its groove.

Southee went back to bowling full and straight from round the stumps. Angelo Mathews took a single first ball, and it was time for Lahiru Thirimanne to test weak hearts. The first ball he faced, Thirimanne moved well across to the off side in an attempt to beat short fine leg. Southee stayed in the block hole, and Thirimanne managed just the single.

Another yorker, another single for Mathews: five off three. Southee remained full, Thirmanne drove and was beaten. Advantage New Zealand. Thirimanne now dug Sri Lanka out of a hole he had partly dug.

Again he took the incredible risk of aiming over short fine leg, Southee missed his yorker by six inches, and Thirimanne got under it. Fists were pumped both in the middle and in the dugout as soon as the ball cleared the fielder. The best New Zealand could get now was a tie. Earlier in the afternoon, Nicol had hit debutant mystery bowler Akila Dananjaya smack on the face with a straight drive, but he and McCullum did not run off the ricochet. Would things have been different had they not been such sports? That would have been the last thing on their minds when New Zealand pulled the field in to try to save that single.

Southee surprised Thirimanne with a short ball, he bat-padded it to point, where Franklin kept a cool head and returned a gentle throw on a comfortable bounce to Taylor at the non-striker’s end. Taylor fumbled the take. He missed a dolly. Sri Lanka began to celebrate, and a disappointed Taylor shook hands with the umpires, who – just to be sure – asked for the third umpire’s help. The stumps had somehow been broken.

The replays showed the ball had hit Taylor’s hand and bounced on to the stumps. In real time it seemed as though Taylor had broken the wicket without the ball in his hands. Technology surprised everyone, and the game went into the Super Over. Southee continued his good work in the tiebreaker, but two of his yorkers were wides.

Even so, he had conceded just 10 off the first five balls, but Perera scooped the last delivery over short fine leg to register three crucial runs. Malinga, who had an average tournament until then, decided this was a moment as good as any to make an impact.

He hardly missed his length with the first four balls: two, one, two byes, one. Malinga then missed his yorker by about a foot, Guptill got under it, but this was Dilshan’s night.

  • Tax residency certificate now mandatory for foreign investors

Tax residency certificate now mandatory for foreign investors

NEW DELHI (TIP): India has made it mandatory for all foreigners to furnish a tax residency certificate of their home country to claim benefits under the double taxation avoidance agreement.

This will make the process of claiming tax credit easier for foreigners by removing the arbitrariness in the earlier regime. The Central Board of Direct Taxes, the apex direct taxes body, has notified changes to the income tax act prescribing a tax residency certificate. All non residents are entitled to claim benefits under the domestic tax law or the relevant tax treaty to the extent it is more beneficial to them.

Treaty benefits in India is available to a person who is a resident of the treaty country. While there was no requirement prescribed under the law to furnish a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) from the country of residence to claim treaty benefits, the revenue authorities were asking for such a certificate wherever treaty benefit was claimed.

Tax experts say this will also makes life easier for Indian companies having overseas operations as well and foreign investors in India. A prescribed format will allow foreign residents to know in advance the essentials required to claim tax credits, said said Sudhir Kapadia, national tax leader, Ernst & Young. “This would be very useful for Indian multinationals as they will be able to get a TRC in a speedy manner as there is a benchmark template prescribed unlike at present depending on the discretion of tax officers,” he said. The TRC for availing tax benefits was proposed in the 2012-13 budget. “It is noticed that in many instances the taxpayers who are not tax resident of a contracting country do claim benefit under the DTAA entered into by the Government with that country. Thereby, even third party residents claim unintended treaty benefits,” said the memorandum to the 2012-13 Budget.

The TRC would have the tax identification number of the assessee, its residential status for the purposes of tax, period for which the TRC is applicable and address of the assessee during that period. However, experts are skeptical about TRCs effectiveness. “While the notification specifies the details that a TRC of another country should have, it would be worthwhile to wait and watch whether the country issuing such a TRC would be willing to specify all such details in the TRC.

Further, in case the assessee is not able to obtain all details as specified in the TRC, would the Indian Revenue authorities deny the exemption which otherwise would be available to them?,” said Homi Mistry. Partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells.

COIMBATORE/MUMBAI (TIP): L&T Construction has got new orders worth Rs 1,241 crore during the month. The company’s buildings and factories division has got orders totalling Rs 697 crore for building residential towers and factories. The railways business division has received orders worth Rs 544 crore from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd.

These include railway electrification work between Guntakal-Raichur-Wadi stations of the South Central Railway and another order for construction, track work, signaling and telecommunication in the Lucknow and Izatnagar divisions of the North Eastern Railway.

Norwest Venture Partners invests Rs 120 cr in Thyrocare

MUMBAI (TIP): Thyrocare Technologies, a Mumbai-based medical diagnostics services provider, has raised about Rs 120 crore from private equity (PE) firm Norwest Venture Partners (NVP). Through the deal, Thyrocare has diluted about 10 per cent stake in the company, it is learnt. As part of the agreement, Sohil Chand, managing director of NVP India, would join Thyrocare’s board of directors. The diagnostics market in India is estimated at Rs 10,000 crore.

Thyrocare’s network of 20,000 service centres across 1,000 cities and towns in India accounts for about 1,00,000 doctors, through 600 franchisees. For Thyrocare, this is the second PE investment.

In 2010, CX Partners had invested Rs 188 crore for a 30 per cent stake in the company. A Velumani, managing director and chief executive of Thyrocare Technologies, said, “When CX Partners invested, we were motivated and ventured into Nueclear, (the in-vivo segment).

Now, with NVP’s investment, we would explore global markets.” NVP manages about $3.7 billion in capital and has funded 500 companies. India’s diagnostics sector has been in the radar of PE majors for some time. Early this year, Singapore based GIC had invested $100 million in Vasan Healthcare, while last year, Goldman Sachs invested about Rs 300 crore for a six per cent stake in Max India. In 2010, US-based TA Associates had invested $35 million in Dr Lal Pathlabs. Last year, PE fund Avigo Capital Partners had acquired 9.27 per cent stake in Super Religare Laboratories for Rs 100 crore.

  • Eunuchs show why women live longer than men

Eunuchs show why women live longer than men

LONDON (TIP): Male sex hormones may be responsible for shortening the lives of men as compared to women, a new study has claimed. Researchers in Korea found that eunuchs – castrated men living centuries ago – outlived others by a significant margin due to absence of such hormones. The evidence comes after careful study of genealogy records of noble members of the Imperial court of the Korean Chosun dynasty (AD 1392- 1910), the ‘Daily Mail’ reported. “This discovery adds an important clue for understanding why there is a difference in the expected life span between men and women,” Kyung-Jin Min, of Inha University, said. By poring over records, Min and his colleague Cheol-Koo Lee, of Korea University, found that eunuchs lived 14 to 19 years longer than other men did.

Amongst the 81 eunuchs they studied, three lived to the ripe old age of 100 or more, a feat of longevity that remains relatively rare even in developed countries today. They noted the incidence of centenarians among Korean eunuchs is at least 130 times greater than it is in developed countries, and that can’t be explained simply by the benefits of life in the palace, either.

Soon, bugs fed on whiskey ‘leftovers’ to power cars

LONDON (TIP): Bacteria fed on whiskey “leftovers” can now be used to fuel vehicles. A Scottish company has signed a ‘first of its kind deal’ in the world to turn by-products from its distillery into fuel for cars. The Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire has linked up with a spin-out company from Napier University in Edinburgh, as they plan to use bacteria to feed on the “leftovers” from the whiskey making process. This will produce butanol which can be used to fuel vehicles, the ‘BBC News’ reported. More than 90% of the stuff that comes out of a whiskey distillery is not just whiskey, but leftovers like draff and pot ales – both are produced in the early stages of the process.

They are high in sugar and are currently used for things like fertilizer and cattle feed. Napier University’s Biofuel Research Centre (BfRC) has already shown that the bacteria can feed on whiskey byproducts to produce butanol – a direct replacement for vehicle fuel. Now the spin-out company, Celtic Renewables, and independent malt whiskey producer Tullibardine have signed a memorandum of understanding. They intend to apply the process to thousands of tonnes of the distillery’s leftovers.

Amarnath dropped from selection committee, Patil new head

MUMBAI (TIP): Mohinder Amarnath, widely predicted to be the next chairman of selectors, has been dropped from the selection committee following its reconstitution on September 28.

Sandeep Patil, Amarnath’s World Cup winning team-mate, is the new chairman of selectors, and Vikram Rathour is his replacement from North Zone. Roger Binny from South Zone, Saba Karim from East Zone, and Rajinder Hans from Central Zone make up the rest of the committee. The decision was taken at the BCCI’s 83rd AGM in Mumbai. Ever since Amarnath joined the committee last year, it was widely assumed that he would take over from outgoing chairman Kris Srikkanth, but there had been murmurs of a falling-out between Amarnath and the board.

One of the reasons believed to be behind Amarnath’s ouster is his being a resident of Mumbai; state associations from North Zone were reported to be unhappy because it prevented him from spending enough time watching young cricketers in the North Zone.

The board chief, N Srinivasan, though, refused to divulge reasons for Amarnath’s exclusion. He said that the contract of selectors is reviewed annually, and by no means was Amarnath assured a four-year term. “The term of the selector is maximum of four years, to be elected annually,” Srinivasan said. “This is BCCI’s decision, and that is not a subject of public discussion.

The fact is, the BCCI possibly wanted a new-look selection committee, which is what they have [now].” Patil’s name was a bit of a surprise because former India quick Abey Kuruvilla was considered a certainty from the West Zone. Srinivasan said the board felt a need for a big name as the chairman. “We wanted a person of sufficient stature, a tall man. I think he fits that need.” Patil played 29 Tests and 45 ODIs for India in the 1980s, and was a middle order stalwart for Mumbai. He has also coached India, Kenya and Oman, and was most recently chairman of India’s National Cricket Academy.

Srinivasan said Patil’s name was not picked out of a hat overnight. “There is a process of consultation,” he said. “We went through that consultation. It is not as if the process went on this morning only.

The process has been on for some time. There has been extensive consultation among board members for some time.” For Patil this is a transfer from Bangalore, where he was the chairman of the National Cricket Academy. Also from Bangalore comes Binny, a medium- pace bowling all rounder, who was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning side.

FIA: An Insult to Democracy and Secularism

    By
    Dave Makkar

FIA is an organization in the public domain. As we had promised our readers to lay bare the facts about the organization in our editorial last week, here is the first in the series of revelations we will be making over the next few weeks.

We will be very happy to receive your comments which will be treated with all respect and published in the columns of The Indian Panorama. Please email your comment to editor@theindianpanorama.news. You may also mail your comment to P.O.Box 190067, S. Richmond Hill, NY 11419. The comment can also be posted on line.

We have placed on our website (www.theindianpanorama.news) a petition to concerned authorities and call upon you to sign it if you are convinced that the FIA needs to be reformed and agree with the contents of the petition.

The Indian Panorama will be grateful for your support in reforming an organization which should legitimately belong to the Indian Americans as a whole.

    EDITOR

Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) came into existence in 1977 after changing the name of umbrella organization “Joint Committee of Indian Organizations” founded in 1975 under the leadership of Rajan Ghosh. The main goal of this organization was to celebrate India’s Independence and Republic days in Tri-state area by bringing under one roof Indian student organizations; India Club of New York University, India Club of Columbia University and Association of Indians in America, The Bharathi Society of America and the Tagore Society of America.

Mr. Thomas Abraham, a Christian from Kerala was elected First President of FIA and in March 1981 Sureshwar Prasad Singh took over and initiated the first India Day Parade in 1982 in New York. He was succeeded by H. C. Chandershekar for the term of 1982-83.

During the Presidency of Sudha Acharaya in 1983-84 tradition of Bollywood movie star as Grand Marshal with Sunil Dutt was started. She was also instrumental in bringing 17 more organizations under FIA.

With the Presidency of Ram Gadhvi in 1985, Hindu Gujarati Leader’s hold on FIA started increasing and the final nail in the coffin was put with the entry of Ramesh Patel to have absolute control. This organization lost its focus on Student Organizations, other regional organizations and other communities’ involvement in the India Day Parade. FIA stooped so low that its Chairman Ramesh Patel appointed Nirav Mehta, a wanted man by CBI in India as its President in 2010 and subsequently as its Trustee in 2011.

The 13 members all FIA Trust under the Chairmanship of Ramesh Patel has only 2 non Gujarati members; Yash Pal Soi a Hindu from Punjab and Prabir Roy a Hindu from West Bengal. The 6 member Executive Committee, barring Treasurer Ahmed Shakir, are Hindus from Gujarat. The same is true for various committees formed for the purpose of organizing the Parade. Majority are Hindus from one state- Gujarat only.

Current President Kanu Chauhan is a Trustee also and was also President in 1997.

This raises serious a question. There are almost 1 million Indians in Tri-State area how come FIA could not find talented individuals from other religions and belonging to other regions of India?

The truth is FIA has been majority controlled/owned by Hindus from one state of Gujarat only for over 25 years. In fact FIA is in perpetual control of Ramesh Patel along with his hand picked kitchen cabinet including fugitives running from law in India.

The most disgusting part in FIA is a lack of understanding the meaning of Indian Unity. The utter disregard for other states and other than Hindu religions of India does not contribute to the broad concept of Indian unity. FIA has shown no interest in promoting Indian Culture and Indian Art. Recognition of American born Indians who have brought glory to the community has never been on the agenda of FIA that has been obsessed soley with organizing India Day Parade or a Bollywood style Dance Pe Chance .All they know is how to parade themselves, their families, friends and parade contractors with a Bollywood star. They do not hesitate to Parade girls in Indian Tri color Bikinis dancing to the song “Mera rang de Basanti Chola” to insult India- the very country they profess they love.

FIA is not at all transparent and willing to put their accounts on the internet for public to see despite the fact money spent has been received from organizations owned by Indian public like State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Air India etc. and Indian Multinational Corporations like Kingfisher, Jet Airways, Zee TV etc. as well as Indian Americans. No one knows how the money is collected and spent. All the contracts are awarded to majority from Gujarat on no bid basis without calling for open tenders.

Insiders are claiming that donations from big donors are collected by a third party and after taking out 15-20% as commission the third party passes on the rest of money to FIA with the full knowledge of its Chairman Ramesh Patel.

Then FIA is violating US Laws also for Charitable organizations by openly taking sides in Elections besides violating financial disclosure and Foreign Trade Practices laws. FIA should be investigated for its illegal activities by Government of India for misusing Public Organization Funds, appointing fugitives running from law in India as President and Trustee. FIA needs to be investigated by US Authorities as well for violating numerous laws of the country.

Ramesh Patel and his supporters must understand FIA is run with public money and contributions from sponsors. They have no ownership rights of the organization. Moreover a great majority of Indians do not agree with their narrow thinking that “Hindu Gujarat is India and India is Hindu Gujarat”. They must honor and respect that India has 28 states and 7 Union Territories practicing all the major religions of the world. The Hindus of other states are not inferior to Gujarati Hindus. Neither are the Sikhs, Muslims, Jains, Christians & Budhists inferior to Gujarati Hindus.

Multi-religious and multi-state secular nature of India and democratic process demands term limits for all FIA office bearers and trustees as well as representation to every state and ethnicity to the maximum possible limits. Let there be a public debate on this issue on the basis of the formula given below:

    1. Equal Representation to all Major Religions of India by keeping 2 members for each religion nominated by their religious bodies. If there are multiple religious bodies in a particular religion; those bodies have to put their head together to nominate 2 people for a tenure of 2 years only for the post of Trustee. A Trustee will have 1 term limit with no exceptions. After a gap of 4 years a person can come back on the request of his/her religious body. This will give equal representation to Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Budhists & Christians. All financial matters will be the responsibility of the Trustees.

    2. One member from each of the registered State organizations for 2 year term nominated by their organization like Gujarat, Bihar, Bengal, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Kashmir, U.P. etc. for the working committee. There will be 2 Term Limit. If the organization wants to replace its nominee after 2 year term, they will be free to do so.

    3. One Member each from registered Indian Student bodies nominated by their Student council for a term of 2 years for the working committee with 1 Term limit.

    4. One Member each from Lesbian/Gay Transgender/ Bisexual (LGTB ) community for a 2 year Term nominated by their organization with a 1 Term Limit.

    5. One Member from the Indian Consulate nominated by the CG to monitor that the theme of the Parade is in conformity with the international image of India.

Non representation of people from other religions and other states as well as Union Territories of India in FIA doing India Day Parade has been going on for over 2 decades. It is insulting to the very secular and democratic nature of India. It is gross injustice and should not be allowed to continue any more. In the name of Equality and Justice, it is the solemn duty of every individual of Indian origin living in America to demand equal representation for all communities and all Indian states in FIA. If FIA does not agree to this they should not be funded or sponsored or allowed to organize India Day Parade.

The major sponsors especially government of India, and government of India owned corporations, Indian Multinationals and Indian Americans must get involved in this public debate.

    Secular India Day Parade

Actress sues California man behind anti-Muslim film

LOS ANGELES (TIP): An actress in an anti-Islam film that triggered violent protests across the Muslim world sued a California man linked to its production on Wednesday for fraud and slander, saying she had received death threats after the video was posted on YouTube.

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia, who also named Google Inc and its YouTube unit as defendants, asked that the film be removed from YouTube and said her right to privacy had been violated and her life endangered, among other allegations.

It was the first known civil lawsuit connected to the making of the video, which depicts the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer and a fool, and helped generate a torrent of violence across the Muslim world last week.

The violence included an attack on US diplomatic facilities in Benghazi in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed. U.S. and other foreign embassies were also stormed in cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East by furious Muslims.

Garcia accused a producer of the movie, whom she identified as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula and said he used the alias Sam Bacile, of duping her into appearing in a “hateful” film that she had been led to believe was a simple desert adventure movie.”There was no mention of ‘Mohammed’ during filming or on set.

There were no references made to religion nor was there any sexual content of which Ms. Garcia was aware,” said the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

For many Muslims, any depiction of the prophet is blasphemous.
Caricatures deemed insulting in the past have provoked protests and drawn condemnation from officials, preachers, ordinary Muslims and many Christians.
“This lawsuit is not an attack on the First Amendment nor on the right for Americans to say what they think, but does request that the offending content be removed from the Internet,” the lawsuit said.

A representative for Nakoula’s criminal attorney declined to comment on the law suit.

A Google spokesman said the company was reviewing the complaint and “will be in court tomorrow.”APPARENT DUBBING Garcia, who had a relatively small part in a trailer available online, has said that her character was forced to give away her child toa character named “Master George” in one scene.

An expired casting call available online describes a character named George as a “strong leader” and a “tyrant.”But in the English-language trailer at YouTube, Garcia’s character appears to be dubbed over in that scene, with a voice-over for her character referring to Mohammad instead of George.

Garcia’s lawsuit said her voice was also” dubbed into Arabic” in another version of the trailer.

She said the film, which has circulated online as a 13-minute trailer, had prompted her family to refuse to allow her to see orbabysit her grandchildren, fearing for their safety.

The suit accuses Nakoula, Google and YouTube of invasion of privacy, unfair business practices, the use of Garcia’s likeness without permission and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

US officials have said authorities were not investigating the film project itself and that even if it was inflammatory or led to violence, simply producing it cannot be considered a crime in the United States, which has strong free speech laws.

But Nakoula, a Coptic Christian California man who pleaded guilty to bank fraud in 2010,was interviewed by federal probation officers on Saturday probing whether he violated the terms of his release while making the film.

Nakoula, who was released from prison in2011, is prohibited from accessing the Web or assuming aliases without the approval of his probation officer, court records show.

NATO: Halt in joint Afghan operations won’t hurt strategy

played down the significance of the alliance’s decision to scale back joint operations with the Afghan army and police after a string of insider attacks, saying NATO’s strategy of handing over responsibility for the war to its Afghan allies remains unchanged. Following the deaths this year of 51international troops killed by Afghan forces or militants wearing Afghan uniforms, NATO has said that troops will no longer routinely carry out operations such as patrolling or manning outposts with their Afghan counterparts.
On Tuesday, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said plans for a gradual transition to having Afghans responsible for security in the country by the end of 2014 would continue despite the suspension, which he described as “prudent and temporary.”The so-called “green-on-blue” attacks by Afghan forces or militants in their uniforms has tested the trust between NATO troops and their Afghan allies.
The suspension of joint operations came amid a spate of bad news for NATO, after insurgents mounted a brazen attack on the sprawling and heavily guarded Camp Bastion base in Helmand province and destroyed orbadly damage eight US Marine attack jets.
Meanwhile, a mistaken NATO airstrike killed eight village women and girls searching for firewood in eastern Laghman province, andeight South African civilian contractors diedin a suicide bombing near Kabul airport.Fogh Rasmussen sought to put a positive spin on the decision to suspend joint operations, saying it proved that Afghan forces “ware already capable of operating on their own.””The measures taken to reduce the risks facing our troops . … won’t change our overall strategy,” he told reporters in Brussels.”Let me be clear, we remain committed to our strategy and we remain committed to our goal of seeing the Afghans fully in charge of their own security by the end of 2014,” he said.

“The goal is unchanged, the strategy remains the same and the timeline remains the same.”Still, critics pointed out that insider attacks — which have continued despite efforts to vet all 352,000 members of Afghanistan’s army and police forces – were undermining the entire international mission in Afghanistan.

In London, lawmakers criticized the suspension as potentially undermining the strategy of training local forces to provide security once US and NATO forces leave Afghanistan at the end of 2014.”It does appear to be a really significant change in the relationship between(coalition) and Afghan forces,” said opposition Labour Party lawmaker Jim Murphy. John Baron, a member of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party, said the change “threatens to blow a hole in our stated exit strategy, which is heavily reliant on these joint operations continuing.”

“This announcement adds to the uncertainty as to whether Afghan forces will have the ability to keep an undefeated Taliban at bay once NATO forces have left, “Baron, a former army officer, told the House of Commons.UK defense secretary Philip Hammond told lawmakers that the decision was a temporary response to elevated threat levels following the outrage in Muslim countries over an anti-Islam video produced in the United States.

Troops would “return to normal operations” as soon as the tension eased, Hammond insisted after being called to the House of Commons to explain the changes.

Labour legislator Paul Flynn, a staunch opponent of the Afghanistan war, was banned from the Commons for a day after he accused Hammond of misrepresenting the truth.”Our brave soldier lions are being led by ministerial donkeys,” Flynn said.

  • FIA in the Eye of a Storm

FIA in the Eye of a Storm

One of the oldest and supposedly a “representative body of Indian Americans in Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut”, Federation of Indian Associations of NY,NJ,CT, popularly known as FIA, seems to be in the eye of a storm that it may not have weathered during the more than three decades of its existence.

The organization is known principally for its annual India Day Parade in Manhattan. For years now FIA has been organizing the India Day Parade, creating an opportunity for Indian Americans to come together to celebrate India’s Independence. The organizers over the years came to gain attention and recognition in community and at Government of India outposts in the Tri-State area.

The Indian Consulate recognized them and extended them due courtesy, even importance and the government of India establishments extended them all courtesies and cooperated with them in making the Parade a success, year after year.
The recognition seems to have gone in to the heads of the top brass of FIA. Over the last couple of years they have become rude to the point that they forgot, not once, but a couple of times that the Consul General represents government of India; that Permanent Representative to the United Nations is the government of India. They have got so heady that this year they misbehaved with at least two journalists who were covering the India Day Parade and related events. The gentlemen known for their professional competence have not retaliated, not because they cannot but because they thought with Jesus Christ “They know not what they do”.

A number of allegations are now flying against some of the FIA officials, particularly its Chairman (for ever?) Ramesh Patel. A few of its top brass is said to have been under investigation by government agencies in India and here for various kinds of irregularities and offences. At least, one Past President of FIA and currently a Trustee on the 13 member Trust had the CBI in India probing a case against him, with warrants issued against him when he was appointed President of FIA.

The Indian Panorama has received a number of communications, supported with documents, from a few wide awake Indian Americans leveling allegations of impropriety on various counts which are being looked in to at our level. We invite comments from our readers on the issue. We will soon present before our readers the true story.

  • As i see it: Dollar Billionaires in Poor Countries India’s Philanthrocapitalism

As i see it: Dollar Billionaires in Poor Countries India’s Philanthrocapitalism

In this time of global financial crisis, when so many are suffering financial hardship, most countries have witnessed increases in their number of dollar millionaires. These ‘High Net-Worth Individuals’ (HNWI), according to a report by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, have in recent years more than doubled in India. In 2008-09, India had 84,000 HNWIs. By 2010, it had risen by 50 per cent (126,700), the biggest increase of all countries.

In the worldwide list of dollar billionaires for 2010, India ranked third with 69, behind China (128) and the US (403). Forbes states, however, that the wealthiest 100 Indians are collectively worth $276 billion, while their top 100 Chinese counterparts are worth $170 billion. The three richest Indians together had more wealth than the top 24 Chinese billionaires combined.

You don’t have to look very far for evidence of their wealth, with more than 30 luxury skyscrapers springing up in Mumbai. For the rich occupants, the taller, the better, to escape from the reality of India below – the railway tracks, low-rise tenements, choking traffic and the 55 per cent of the city’s population who live in slums. People are paying nearly two million dollars for a designer apartment, built in complexes with private cinemas, swimming pools, floodlit tennis courts and high-level security. Developers believe each year Mumbai can absorb between 30,000 and 40,000 more homes in the one million dollar-plus category. (Another housing bubble in the making?)

Such extreme wealth doesn’t go unnoticed. In the UK, people are questioning the decision to keep giving India some $460 million of aid annually, which makes India the largest single recipient of British aid. Many ordinary Brits are asking if it can be right that the downtrodden British taxpayer gives such sums to a nation that boasts such wealth (albeit highly concentrated).

    Siphoning off the country’s wealth

Some of the most damning comments about India come from French author Dominique Lapierre, whose book royalties from ‘City of Joy’ fund projects for the underprivileged in India. He is frustrated by the greed and corruption that he encounters.

Lapierre’s nonprofit organization, City of Joy Aid, runs a network of clinics, schools, rehabilitation centers and hospital boats. It operates 14 projects in India, most in the Sunderbans area. However, 90 per cent of free medicines get stolen in the journey from Delhi to Kolkata, and the project is thus forced to buy them at high prices from the market.

A few years ago, Lapierre set up in Delhi a trust which offers a tax-deductible certificate for all donations. With more than a hint of disappointment, he notes the foundation still does not have any funds from affluent Indians who seem reluctant to help their fellow country-folk.

Quite the opposite, it seems. Much of India’s wealth has been creamed off into Swiss banks, robbing ordinary folk of a quality of life they can now only but dream of. According to some estimates, it could be over Rs 7,280,000 crore (around $1.6 trillion). Data from the Swiss Banking Association in 2006 indicated that India had more black money than the rest of the world combined, or 13 times India’s total national debt. Global Finance Integrity notes this siphoning of wealth has served to widen the gap between rich and poor and asserts the main guilty parties have been private organizations and High Net Worth Individuals.

By contrast, Global management and consulting firm Bain notes philanthropic donations amount to just 0.6 per cent of India’s GDP. This is not too good when compared to giving in the US and UK, for example, but is better than rates in other developing countries like Brazil and China. In the US, individuals and corporations are responsible for 75 per cent of charitable gifts, whereas in India individual and corporate donations make up only 10 per cent of charitable giving. Some 65 per cent comes from India’s central and state government, and the remaining gifts are provided by foreign organizations.

In India, giving does not rise with income and education. As a percentage of household income, donations by the wealthy actually decrease. From an analysis of 30 HNWIs in India, Bain noted that they contribute, on average, just around one-fourth of one per cent of their net worth to social and charitable causes.

All of this is not meant to imply that philanthropy is absent in India. Far from it. Vineet Nayyar’s Rs 30 crore gift (just under $7 million) to the Essel Social Welfare Foundation is a high-profile example of philanthropic giving. Over the years, Rohini Nilekani has donated $40 million to numerous causes that try to tackle the root causes of social problems and not merely the symptoms. Her biggest contribution has been to Arghyam, a Bangalore foundation that promotes clean water and hygiene, which now has projects in 800 villages. Philanthropy can and does positively impact people’s daily lives.

Philanthrocapitalism: a plaster on a gaping wound

What is really required, though, is a proper redistributive system of taxation, effective welfare provision and genuine economic democracy through forms of common ownership to help address inequality and poverty. In the absence of such things, wealthy philanthrocapitalists will have a major say in deciding which problems are addressed and how, and some will be highly selective.

For instance, critics of Bill Gates say his foundation often ends up favoring his commercial investments. Instead of paying taxes to the state coffers, he donates his profits where it is favorable to him economically, such as supporting GM crops in Africa or high tech patented medicines. ‘Giving’ often acts as a smokescreen for channeling funds into pet projects and ‘business as usual’, with rich corporations receiving money to shape the world in their own image and ultimately for their own benefit. Apparent benevolence can have sinister motives, just like certain governments which provide money in the form of ‘development aid’ that is intentionally used to fund actions that serve geo-political self interest and ultimately undermine the recipient state.

Philanthropy isn’t necessarily opposed to capitalism; it’s very much part of it. Capitalism is designed to ensure that the flow of wealth goes upwards and remains there via, among other things, the privatization of public assets, deregulation of the financial sector, the use of subsidies and tax policies that favor the rich, the legal obligation to maximize shareholder profits and the consistent downward pressures on labor costs.

Professor Ha Joon Chang of Cambridge University says that economics isn’t a social science anymore, but adopts the role the Catholic Church played in medieval Europe. Essentially, economic neo liberalism is secular theology used to justify the prevailing system, with the hope that some drops of wealth will trickle down an extremely thin funnel to placate the mass of the population. Widening the funnel slightly by making benevolent donations will not address the underlying issues of a failed system.

For example, consider that one in four people in India, is hungry and every second child is underweight and stunted. Environmentalist Vandana Shiva argues that hunger is a structural part of the design of the industrialized, globalize food system and of the design of capital-intensive, chemical-intensive monocultures of industrial agriculture. The long-term solution for hunger lies in moving away from and challenging the centralized, globalised food supply controlled by a handful of profiteering corporations.

This type of built-in structural inequality, whether it concerns hunger, poverty, housing, income or health, is part and parcel of a development process that is skewed by elite interests in India and at the World Bank and by the corporations that pull the strings at the World Trade Organization, who have all succeeded in getting their ‘globalization’ agenda accepted. No amount of philanthropy, regardless of how well meaning it may be, will remedy the overall destructive effects of the type of capitalism (and massive corruption) being embraced by India’s economic and political leaders.
