Govt offers to bring Musharraf’s ailing mother to Pakistan

    ISLAMABAD (TIP):
The Pakistan government on Friday offered to bring former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s ailing mother from Dubai in a special aircraft as a humanitarian gesture so that the two could be reunited. The government would “provide all available medical facilities for the treatment” of Musharraf’s 95-year-old mother, said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. The government is ready to send a special plane or air ambulance to bring Musharraf’s mother to “Pakistan on humanitarian grounds so that she can get treatment in Pakistan and live with her son”, the statement said. Musharraf, who has a plethora of cases against him, is currently barred from travelling out of the country as he has been included in the interior ministry’s Exit Control List (ECL).

His petition to remove his name from the ECL, so that he could travel to Dubai to visit his mother, has already been rejected by the Sindh High Court. Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said the independent judiciary will decide Musharraf’s fate. The former army chief is set to appear in a special court on January 1 to face charges of high treason for imposing emergency in 2007. Reacting to the government’s offer, Musharraf’s spokesperson Aasia Ishaque said it was a good gesture but was done because the government realised that he is not going to run away. “My first reaction is the government has finally understood that Musharraf is not going to run away and that is why this good gesture.

But (the mother’s) coming to Pakistan would depend on her health,” she said. “Even Musharraf wanted her to come to Pakistan but her health didn’t permit it.” Though Musharraf has been given bail in all the major cases against him, his name has not been removed from the ECL. He is the first general to face trial for treason. If convicted, he could get life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Taliban suicide attack on Nato convoy in Kabul: Officials

    KABUL:
A Taliban suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed vehicle next to a Nato military convoy in Kabul on Friday, officials said, though no details about casualties were immediately available. The attack occurred on a main road that passes by a series of government compounds and military facilities in the Afghan capital on the way to the eastern city of Jalalabad. “Around 1:00pm, a suicide bomber blew up a car targeting a convoy of foreign forces on the Kabul-Jalalabad road,” Hashmatullah Stanikzai, spokesman for the Kabul police, said. “Our security forces have rushed to the scene to investigate, and we don’t have any information on casualties yet.

” An AFP reporter said that civilian ambulances and armoured vehicles from the US-led Nato mission in Afghanistan were at the blast site, which was quickly cordoned off by police. “Our mujahideen have detonated a car bomb attack on a convoy of foreign forces today afternoon,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said. “As a result of the attack, several foreign forces were killed and a number of their vehicles were damaged.” The Taliban routinely exaggerate death tolls after attacks. A spokesman for Nato’s mission in Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said the explosion was being investigated but gave no further details.

Bangladesh security forces lay siege around Khaleda Zia’s residence

DHAKA (TIP): Bangladesh security forces on Wednesday laid a siege around the residence of opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia, ahead of a massive anti-government rally planned in the capital demanding postponement of the January 5 elections. Witnesses said police in riot gears took positions around Zia’s house barring party activists and visitors’ entry into its premises at up market Gulshan area. However, it was not clear if the 68-year-old former prime minister was kept under house arrest. “We have been working for whatever we think required to maintain law and order and security of all,” police commissioner Benajir Ahmed told reporters without elaboration.

But Zia’s international affairs adviser Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury was quoted as saying in media reports that “since Wednesday she has been under virtual house arrest” and alleged that it was part of a government move to foil the December 29 “march for democracy”. Police officials, however, rejected the claim that Zia was detained and said they were ordered just to intensify the security of her residence and other party leaders. No Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader was available for reactions immediately. Meanwhile, TV news channels reported that police detained BNP lawmaker Shammi Akhtar from in front of Zia’s house late last night along with three other junior party leaders.

On December 24, Zia urged people to march towards Dhaka on December 29 from all over the country to “protect democracy” after the 18-party opposition alliance wrapped up their nearly month-long blockade, sparking widespread violence that claimed over 130 lives. “This march will be historic, we have named it as ‘march for democracy’ … I urge all able bodied countrymen cutting across their affiliation, religion and class to join the rally on December 29,” she had said. BNP and its allies, including fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami, were boycotting the January 5 polls, while over half of the candidates in 300-seat parliament were set to elected unopposed in the absence of rival candidates.

Zia asked the government to shelve the elections fearing “it could be last nail to the coffin of democracy” and accusing her archrival Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of “killing democracy to consolidate power forever.” She also warned that her party would be forced to take “tougher actions” if elections were not postponed.

    KATHMANDU (TIP):
Nepal’s Maoists have agreed to join the country’s constituent assembly, ending a weeks-long impasse after they initially rejected the result of last month’s elections, a senior party leader said on December 22. “We have agreed to join the assembly and help draft a constitution” after other parties agreed to investigate alleged poll-rigging, senior Maoist official Narayan Kaji Shrestha told AFP. The Maoists, who were routed at the polls, threw the country into turmoil when they denounced alleged cheating in the November 19 elections, which were seen as key to completing a peace process after a 10-year civil war. Millions of Nepalis voted at the elections, hoping to instal a constituent assembly that would write a constitution and end years of political instability in the impoverished Himalayan nation. The Maoists, who dominated post-war elections in 2008, won just 80 out of 575 seats and came a distant third behind the Nepali Congress and Unified Marxist-Leninist parties.

    Newton documents yield chilling portrait

    NEW HAVEN, CT (TIP):
Connecticut police released thousands of pages Friday, December 27, from their investigation into the Newtown massacre, providing the most detailed and disturbing picture yet of the rampage and Adam Lanza’s fascination with murder, while also depicting school employees’ brave and clear-headed attempts to protect the children. Included in the file were photographs of the home the 20-year-old Lanza shared with his mother. They show numerous rounds of ammunition, gun magazines, shot-up paper targets, gun cases, shooting earplugs and a gun safe with a rifle in it.

The documents’ release marks the end of the investigation into the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 first-graders and six educators dead. Lanza went to the school after killing his mother, Nancy, inside their home. He committed suicide with a handgun as police arrived at the school. The documents also fill in more details about how the shooting unfolded and how staff members looked out for the youngsters. The documents indicate investigators were gentle in their questioning of children, interviewing youngsters only if they or their parents requested it. Some of the parents thought talking openly about the shooting and getting accurate information out would help their children heal.

  • Christmas Celebrated around the World

    Christmas Celebrated around the World

    NEW YORK (TIP):
Christmas Eve was marked by festivities and preparations around the world today. The faithful prepared for midnight services in places both traditional and unusual. At the Vatican, worshipers filled Saint Peter’s Basilica for Pope Francis’s first Christmas midnight mass as pontiff. Thousands more gathered outside in St. Peter’s Square. He was assisted by more than 300 cardinals, bishops and priests. In his homily, Pope Francis urged people to lead humble lives. “If our heart is closed, if we are dominated by pride, deceit, and the constant pursuit of self interest, then darkness falls within and around us,” he said.

In a break with tradition, Pope Francis himself performed a task usually given to an aide. He carried a figurine of the baby Jesus to the altar at the start of the mass. The statue of Jesus was then placed in the manger of a life-size nativity scene behind the altar. Pope Francis offered a Christmas wish for a better world, praying for protection for Christians under attack, battered women and trafficked children, peace in the Middle East and Africa, and dignity for refugees fleeing misery and conflict around the globe. Francis delivered the traditional ”Urbi et Orbi” (Latin for ”to the city and to the world”) speech from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to 70,000 cheering tourists, pilgrims and Romans in the square below.

He said he was joining all those hoping ”for a better world.” In his first Christmas message since being elected pontiff in March, he asked for all to share in the song of Christmas angels, ”for every man or woman … who hopes for a better world, who cares for others,” humbly. Among places ravaged by conflict, Francis singled out Syria, which saw its third Christmas during civil war; South Sudan; the Central African Republic; Nigeria; and Iraq. In Iraq on Wednesday, militants targeted Christians in two attacks, including a bomb that exploded near a church during Christmas Mass in Baghdad.

The separate bombings killed dozens of people. The Vatican has been trying to raise concern in the world for persecution and attacks on Christians in parts of the Middle East and Africa. ”Lord of life, protect all who are persecuted in your name,” Francis said. pope also prayed that God ”bless the land where you chose to come into the world and grant a favorable outcome to the peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.” Francis then explained his concept of peace. ”True peace is not a balancing of opposing forces. It’s not a lovely facade which conceals conflicts and divisions,” the pope said. ”Peace calls for daily commitment,” Francis said, reading the pages of his speech.

Francis also spoke about the lives of everyday people, especially those struggling for a better life. In Bethlehem, parades filled the streets, as Christian pilgrims and tourists from around the world poured into Manger Square, considered the birthplace of Jesus. Decorations and holiday lights adorned the West Bank for the evening’s celebrations. And in Afghanistan, U.S. troops in Kabul marked the 13th Christmas Eve for American forces in Afghanistan with candles and hymns. In India which has a sizeable Christian population, Christmas was celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm.

The faithful attended midnight mass in churches while a general atmosphere of celebration was witnessed in all major cities. Santa Claus has been a major attraction, as always. In the Philippines, survivors of last month’s catastrophic typhoon erected giant Christmas lanterns across the devastation in Tacloban. People in other towns sang and danced to holiday songs as they remembered lost loved ones.

    Devyani Khobragade had…
December 12 for allegedly presenting fraudulent documents to the United States State Department in support of a visa application for an Indian national employed as a babysitter at housekeeper at Khobragade’s home in Manhattan? As it now turns out, diplomat Devyani Khobragade was accredited as an advisor to the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, allowing her full immunity from personal arrest or detention, when she was picked up from her children’s school by US authorities. India Government sources said Khobragade was accredited advisor to the Indian mission to the UN on August 26, 2013 to help the mission with work related to the General Assembly, and her accreditation was valid until December 31.

The sources claimed the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations Article 4 Section 11A specifies “immunities from personal arrest or detention and from the seizure of their personal baggage” of all representatives of members to the United Nations. Section 16 of the same Article specifies that the expression “Representative” shall be deemed to include all delegates, deputy delegates, advisors, technical experts and secretaries of delegations. She was accredited as advisor on August 26 and was transferred to the permanent mission after the arrest and is currently holding the position of counselor. Because she was attached to the permanent mission only temporarily (until December 31), the State Department was not required to issue its own identity card and it is possible that they may not have known about Khobragade’s status.

Sources said this was all the more reason for the State Department to have informed India about the move to arrest Khobragade. As the diplomat was working as acting consul general, the US ought to have notified India about her arrest under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. The MEA joint secretary who handles the US desk, Vikram Doraiswamy, was in that country on the day Khobragade was arrested, but he wasn’t informed about it. The alacrity with which the US “evacuated” Khobragade’s domestic help Sangeeta Richard’s family, two days before the diplomat’s arrest, rattled New Delhi. Bharara later justified this in a statement saying the Justice Department was “compelled” to make sure that victim, witnesses and their families “are safe and secure while cases are pending”.

As the case now unravels fast, several US officials, especially those who handled Khobragade’s arrest, may have opened themselves to claims for damages and liability. The government has also discovered that the amount of $4,500 quoted by Bharara as salary promised to Sangeeta by Khobragade was actually just a mention of the employer’s salary on the help’s visa application form. The State Department’s own guidelines on diplomatic and consular immunity emphasize that law enforcement officials need to be sensitive because short-term official visitors from other States to the United Nations or to international conferences convened by the UN may enjoy full diplomatic immunity equivalent to that afforded to diplomatic agents.

“Owing to the temporary nature of their visit, such officials will normally not have the usual official identity documents recognizable in the United States. Law enforcement officials (particularly in New York) should be sensitive to the existence of this situation and always coordinate with the US authorities indicated in the list of Useful Phone Numbers if confronted with an apparent offender appearing to fall into this category’,” it states. A diplomat’s daughter, Krittika Biswas, had last year filed a lawsuit in a NYC court seeking $1.5 million as damages for her wrongful arrest.

He then spent three years from 1985 to 1988 as First Secretary handling political affairs at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, followed by two years as First Secretary and Political Advisor to the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka. In 1990, Dr. Jaishankar became Commercial Counsellor in Budapest. NY Mayor elect’s daughter speaks of her struggle with substance abuse

    I.S. Saluja:
NEW YORK (TIP): Coming on Christmas eve, Chiara de Blasio’s statement about her battle with substance abuse must inspire those, particularly the young, suffering from the scourge. The 19-year-old daughter of New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio is reported to have spoken about her personal struggles, saying she spent years battling substance abuse and depression, in a four minute video released Tuesday, December 24, on the eve of Christmas by the incoming mayor’s transition team. She said she drank alcohol and smoked marijuana to deal with clinical depression and anxiety.

“It made it easier, the more I drank and did drugs, to share some common ground with people,” she said, speaking under soft lights with piano music tinkling in the background. “It didn’t start out as, like, a huge thing for me, but then it became a really huge thing for me.” She said she thought she could escape the problem by leaving for college in California, but her sense of “physical insecurity” only grew worse. “My mom was trying really hard to help me and my dad was doing the same, but obviously he was really busy,” she said.

“They were both very emotionally committed to trying to find out some way to get me better.” De Blasio said she eventually found success in group therapy at a treatment center in New York. “Removing substances from my life opened so many doors for me. I was actually able to participate in my dad’s campaign,” she said in the video. “Getting sober is always a positive thing, and by no means is it easy – it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done – but it’s so worth it.”In a statement accompanying the video, Bill de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, said they were “so proud of Chiara and love her deeply.”

“As parents, our instinct has been to protect our daughter and privately help her through a deeply personal struggle,” they said in the statement. “But not only has Chiara committed to her own health, she is also committed to helping young people everywhere who face similar challenges.” The campaign did not say what prompted it to release the video on Christmas Eve, a day when many news consumers are more concerned with travel or shopping than current events. The announcement was framed as a way to help others struggling with depression and substance abuse during the holiday season. Rumors swirled during the mayoral primary campaign that Chiara had battled drug issues.

But the de Blasio campaign fiercely beat back reporters who pursued the topic, saying that his two children were off limits from the press. No media outlet published a story. Yet even as the campaign pleaded for privacy, de Blasio’s family played a key role in his campaign. De Blasio was frequently joined at campaign events by his wife, and McCray is considered his top adviser who will wield considerable influence at City Hall. Both Chiara and her brother stumped for their father and appeared in television ads. Dante appeared first, and the teen’s soaring Afro and heartfelt descriptions of his father was the most effective ad of the campaign, helping de Blasio surge in the polls.

Chiara de Blasio’s ad appeared closer to Election Day and she gave a sunny description of her dad’s vision “that leaves no one behind.” She also introduced her father at his raucous primary night party. She gave one hint about some of her struggles after being spotted in tears at a parade in September. She told reporters that she sometimes suffered from anxiety. In the hours after the video was released, de Blasio briefly appeared outside his Brooklyn home and, flanked by the other three members of his family, repeated how proud he was of his daughter. The mayor-elect did not take questions.

During the campaign, de Blasio spoke about his father’s substance abuse, particularly with alcohol. His father later committed suicide.White House Drug Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske released a statement late Tuesday praising Chiara de Blasio’s decision “to give voice to the millions who suffer from substance abuse disorders.”

Arvind Kejriwal sworn as Delhi’s Chief Minister

    AP Singh:
DELHI (TIP): Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal was sworn in as the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi at a simple ceremony at Ram Lila Maidan here on December 28. At 45, he is the youngest ever Chief Minister of Delhi. The oath of office was administered by Najeeb Jang, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. Six ministers in Kejriwal’s cabinet also took oath of office. They are Manish Sisodia, Rakhi Birla, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Satyendra Jain, Girish Soni, and Somnath Bharti. The oath taking ceremony in the iconic sprawling Ram Lila Maidan, in keeping with the wishes of Arvind Kejriwal, was kept a simple affair.

In a revolutionary departure from the past practice, there were no VVIP enclosures. However, it turned out to be the most largely attended oath taking ceremony where hundreds of thousands of stake holders in the governance of Delhi milled around to witness the historic event. Each present felt he was a part of the people’s government. Such has been the magic of Arvind Kejriwal’s style of working and treating people. Kejriwal has repeatedly said it is the people who are the masters. Government is there only to serve them. Earlier, Kejriwal and his colleagues nominated to cabinet boarded Metro from the Kaushambi metro station at 10.30 AM and proceed for the swearing in ceremony at the Ramlila Maidan.

They arrived at Ram Lila Maidan a little before 12, accompanied by a large number of party workers who shouted slogans, like Kejriwal Zindabad. The enthusiasm of the aam aadmi was seen to be believed. They were celebrating the historic event of the passage of power in to their own hands. Many in the crowds were visibly moved and had tears in their eyes. Kejriwal heads a minority government, with a total of 28 legislators in a house of 70.

    HURLEY, WARNE SPLIT AGAIN

Actress Elizabeth Hurley and former cricketer Shane Warne have reportedly called off their engagement for the second time after an initial split in September. The 48-year-old brunette beauty and the 44-year-old retired cricketer got back together last month, but if a source is to be believed the couple has now called it quits for good. “It is very sad and they tried to make it work but there were just too many issues in the way. Elizabeth is taking it one day at a time.

She will always be extremely fond of Shane,” HELLO! magazine quoted a source as saying. Rumours of their split were fuelled after Warne tweeted: “The past should be the past and stay there. It destroys the future. Live life for what tomorrow has to offer, not for what happened yesterday.” The duo parted ways in September after Hurley reportedly found intimate text messages from someone else on Warne’s mobile phone while packing for a trip to his native Australia.

STORY: After being held captive in a room for 20 years, Joe Doucett (Brolin) sets out on an obsessive journey of violent revenge against his anonymous captor. What also keeps him going is the need to make amends with his estranged daughter. REVIEW: Joe embodies just about every offensive trait that an absentee dad who is an alcoholic and a lecherous womanizer, can have. He begins his work day with a fifth of vodka, injects blatant innuendos in every conversation with female co-workers and ends his day as drunk as a skunk, pissing on the streets and rolling in his own vomit.

In short, he is a cringe-inducing wreck. After one episode, he wakes up in a room to find himself held captive. He is fed a diet of dumplings and vodka everyday and only has rodents for company. Via television, he finds out his ex-wife has been murdered and he is the chief suspect. After almost losing his mind, he sees his daughter on a TV news report and realizes his only chance for moral redemption is to find and take care of her. Joe goes cold turkey, does push-ups and cleans up before managing to escape. In the real world, he meets the sexy social worker Marie (Olsen) who adds some muchneeded warmth to his life.

Predictably enough, she falls for him. His buddy Chucky (Imperioli) is also a big help. Lee is known for his bold films, but his remake of Chan-wook Park’s genuinely freaky Oldeuboi lacks the former’s visceral punch. Two scenes – an extended tracking shot of a fight scene involving a hammer and Joe crawling out of a Louis Vuitton trunk in a field while a woman holding a yellow umbrella stands in the background – are surreal. What’s oddest is that at the end of 20 years, Joe looks like he hasn’t even aged 20 days and some of the dialogues are shockingly limp. The film has graphic violence and perversion, but there is no take-away. It leaves you trying to nail down what the point to this remake really was.

  • BIT OF BOOZE A DAY DOES KEEP DOCTOR AT BAY

BIT OF BOOZE A DAY DOES KEEP DOCTOR AT BAY

Researchers have suggested that moderate drinking of alcohol may actually bolster one’s immune system and help it fight off infection. To conduct the study, the researchers trained a group of 12 rhesus macaques to consume alcohol — a 4 percent ethanol mixture — of their own accord. Researchers vaccinated the monkeys against small pox as part of the study. They then separated the animals into two groups — those with access to the 4 percent ethanol and those with access to sugar water.

All of the animals had regular access to pure water, and to food. The researchers then monitored the animals’ daily ethanol consumption for 14 months. And the animals were vaccinated again, seven months after the experiment began. The monkeys’ voluntary ethanol consumption segregated them into two groups. One group was made up of heavy drinkers, those that had an average blood ethanol concentration greater than 0.08 percent — the legal limit for humans to be able to drive a vehicle.

The other group was made up of moderate drinkers, with an average blood ethanol concentration of 0.02 to 0.04 percent. Prior to consuming the alcohol, all of the animals showed comparable responses to the vaccination. But after exposure to the alcohol, the two groups of monkeys responded in very different ways to the vaccination. The heavy drinkers showed greatly diminished vaccine responses compared with the control group of monkeys who drank the sugar water. But the more surprising finding: the moderate-drinking monkeys displayed enhanced responses to the vaccine compared to the control group. Moderate drinking bolstered their bodies’ immune systems.

  • Alternative treatments for diabetes

    Alternative treatments for diabetes

It’s no news that Chennai is considered the diabetes capital of India. With the number of diabetics increasing every year, this condition has started affecting children as well. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in the endocrine system. This dreadful disease is found in all parts of the world and is becoming a serious threat to mankind. There are lots of chemical agents available to control and to treat diabetic patients, but total recovery from diabetes has not been reported till now. In addition to adverse effects, drug treatments are not always satisfactory in maintaining euglycemia and avoiding late stage diabetic complications. That is why, this World Diabetes Day, Chennai Times brings you a few alternative treatments for this disease…

    Natural remedies
“Several medicinal plants have been investigated for their beneficial effect in different type of diabetes,” says Dr Rajat K, who is currently studying different ways of treating the condition. Bitter gourd juice, fenugreek seeds, etc. have been knows to us for a long time. He adds, “As per ancient literature, more than 800 plants are reported to have antidiabetic properties.” The indigenous diet may not be useful in lowering the blood sugar to the same extent as insulin and other hypoglycemic agent do, but it has some other influences, which may be useful for the management of the disease and its complications.

    Dietary supplements
Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients that our body requires in small quantities for specific function. According to Dr Rajat, “They most commonly function as essential coenzyme and co-factor for metabolic reaction and thus help support basic cellular reactions. Micronutrients have been investigated as potential preventive and treatment agents for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and for common complication of diabetes.” Minerals like chromium, vanadium, magnesium, nicotinamide and vitamin E are essential for optimum health and low levels of these minerals and vitamins are associated with higher incidence of diabetes. Consulting a specialist about which minerals and vitamins to take, and its quantities, can help a diabetic patient.

    Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is the treatment of illness and injury through the use of water, both hot and cold. Hydrotherapy helps the body to get rid of toxins and relax muscle. It also relaxes body, both mentally and physically. Since hot-tub therapy can increase blood flow to skeletal muscle, it has been recommended for patients with type 2 diabetes who are unable to exercise. According to Dr Kanika Selva, a hydrotherapist, “It has been proven through various studies and experiments that in hot water, a patient’s weight, mean plasma glucose level and his mean Glycosylated hemoglobin decreases.” She stresses, “Hot-tub therapy should be further evaluated as a therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The benefit could result from increased blood flow to skeletal muscle.

    Yoga
Yoga is an old, traditional, Indian psychological, physical and spiritual exercise regimen that has been studied for several decades for its role in the management of several chronic disease, including hypertension, asthma, obesity, and psychiatric illness.Additionally, yoga has been studied for controlling both the symptom and complication associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Shanthi M, a yoga instructor says, “The results from these studies suggest a statistically significant role of yoga in diabetes. Yoga practice showed a significant improvement for those diabetic patients with pre-existing complication.”

  • BEER FOR A LONG LIFE, COFFEE FOR A SHORT ONE

BEER FOR A LONG LIFE, COFFEE FOR A SHORT ONE

Researchers have claimed that caffeine shortens and alcohol lengthens telomeres — the end points of chromosomal DNA, implicated in ageing and cancer. Now Prof. Martin Kupiec said that for the first time they’ve identified a few environmental factors that alter telomere length, and they’ve shown how they do it. Telomeres, made of DNA and proteins, mark the ends of the strands of DNA in our chromosomes.

They are essential to ensuring that the DNA strands are repaired and copied correctly. Every time a cell duplicates, the chromosomes are copied into the new cell with slightly shorter telomeres. Eventually, the telomeres become too short, and the cell dies. Only fetal and cancer cells have mechanisms to avoid this fate; they go on reproducing forever. An earlier study had revealed that the longer your telomeres are, the longer you will live – dependent, of course, on not dying accidentally, from disease or from lifestyle factors. The researchers set out to expand on a 2004 study by Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist Prof.

Elizabeth Blackburn, which suggested that emotional stress causes the shortening of the telomeres characteristic of aging, presumably by generating free radicals in the cells. The researchers grew yeast cells in conditions that generate free radicals to test the effect on telomere length. They were surprised to find that the length did not change. They went on to expose the yeast cells to 12 other environmental stressors. Most of the stressors — from temperature and pH changes to various drugs and chemicals — had no effect on telomere length. But a low concentration of caffeine, similar to the amount found in a shot of espresso, shortened telomeres, and exposure to a 5-to-7 per cent ethanol solution lengthened telomeres.

  • Viagra helps women curb menstrual cramping

Viagra helps women curb menstrual cramping

Ateam of researchers have claimed that women suffering from moderate to severe menstrual cramps may find relief in a class of erectile dysfunction drugs. Primary dysmenorrhea, also called PD, is the most common cause of pelvic pain in women. Sildenafil citrate, sold under the brand name Viagra, may help with pelvic pain because it can lead to dilation of the blood vessels. The researchers looked at administering sildenafil citrate vaginally, which had not yet been tried, to treat PD.

They compared pain relief from use of sildenafil vaginally with that of a placebo. Penn State College of Medicine researchers worked with researchers at Nova Gradiska General Hospital in Croatia. They recruited women 18 to 35 years old who suffered from moderate to severe PD. Of the 29 women screened for the study, 25 were randomized to receive either sildenafil or a placebo drug. Patients rated their pain over four consecutive hours.

Sildenafil citrate administered vaginally alleviates acute menstrual pain with no reported side effects. Researchers hypothesized that the drug would alleviate pain, which it does, but also that is does so by increasing blood flow. However, because uterine blood flow increased from both sildenafil and the placebo, the reason it alleviates pain is not yet known.

  • NATURAL WAYS FOR GREAT HAIR

    NATURAL WAYS FOR GREAT HAIR

Spending too much on expensive shampoos, but not getting the desired results that you see in TV ads? It is mostly possible and very common, because we see overly exaggerated results on TV, since these ads are designed to attract customers. But, reality speaks a different story. Instead of spending on those branded shampoos and conditioners, Dr. Sandeep Suttar – Hair Restoration and Skin Rejuvenation surgeon at Hairrevive, Mumbai, shares some natural ways to get great hair. Follow these easy and simple steps to give that luster and shine to your hair, and flaunt your hair like the models do…

    Egg treatment
Use the entire egg to condition your hair. If you have dry or brittle hair, use egg whites to moisturize your hair. Use ½ cup of any egg mixture (egg white, entire egg) and apply to clean, damp hair. Leave it for 20 minutes and rinse with cool water.

    Cleanliness is important
The most important reason for hair fall is dandruff and itchy scalp. Therefore, maintain good cleanliness for beautiful and healthy hair.

    Avoid hot water
Skip hot water showers, because hot water will make your hair dry and brittle as it strips protective oils from your hair – says Dr. Suttar. Thus, prefer a temperature which is just a bit warmer than your body temperature.

    Bottle gourd treatment
Extract some bottle gourd juice and apply it into your hair. Keep this solution for half an hour and wash it off thoroughly.

    For that shiny soft hair
Prepare a mixture of 1 cup of your daily conditioner and 2-3 tablespoons of honey. Apply this mixture evenly on your wet hair. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off thoroughly. This mixture will close down your hair’s cuticle and give your hair that amazing shine.

    Baking soda therapy
Make a mixture of 3 tbsp. of baking soda and some water. Rinse your hair with this solution after shampooing. Let it set in for at least 5 minutes before the final rinse. This therapy will help to remove the excess shampoo and styling product from your hair.

    For bouncy hair
Apply a one to one mixture of warm water and apple cider vinegar to your hair. Rinse it thoroughly after 5 minutes to get rid of the apple cider smell.

    Don’t wash your hair frequently
Wash your hair every 2-3 days, for proper regulation of natural hair oils. Washing your hair less often will also help regain your hair’s natural body and luster.

    Make your conditioner
For a protein packed conditioner, mix eggs and yogurt and rub it into your scalp. Leave on for five or 10 minutes, and then wash it off completely.

    For strong hair
Use almond oil to treat dry and damaged hair. It is a very simple procedure, pour some almond oil in a bowl and heat it for 40 seconds. Then evenly distribute on your hair. Leave it for 30 minutes and then rinse normally with shampoo and conditioner using cold water.

Say bye-bye to dull hair with lemon juice
After the final rinse, apply 1 tsbp lemon juice to your hair. Simply towel dry your hair and style as normal to get rid of dry hair.

Use protection before you jump into the pool
Pools can do great damage to your hair as it contains harsh chemicals – says Dr Suttar. He says; prevent your hair from the pool damage by simply applying a little conditioner to your hair before you swim. This will protect your hair before it comes in contact with the pool water.

    Treat sun damaged hair
Make a mixture of ½ cup honey, 1-2 tbsp olive oil and 1-2 tbsp of egg yolk. Apply this mixture on your hair for 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water. This treatment will help to replenish keratin protein bonds – says Dr. Suttar.

    Tight is NO-NO
To prevent breakage due to brittle hair avoid using bands and do not tie your hair too tightly.

    The proper brushing technique
Avoid using a comb with plastic bristles to prevent hair breakage from static electricity. The best way to brush your hair is by first brushing the ends to remove tangles and then take the long stokes from the roots of the hair to the ends. This technique will help proper spreading of natural hair oil and thus prevent breakage.

    Moisturize your hair
Pour a little beer in your wet hair. Distribute evenly and massage your scalp with your fingers for 20 minutes. Then rinse it thoroughly to get rid of the beer smell. Do this procedure once a week for salon smooth hair. Dr. Suttar says- it is recommended that people with sinus and cold should avoid using this treatment.

    Trim your hair regularly
Get your hair trimmed at least every six weeks to eliminate dry, split ends.

    Do not brush wet hair
Wet hair is three times weaker and thus more likely to break – says Dr. Suttar. He recommends, towel dry your hair first and then gently detangle your hair using a wide tooth comb

    Let your hair air-dry
Allow your hair to dry by itself instead of using a blow-dryer or hot rollers. Using this artificial mode of drying technique will make your hair more brittle and dry. If you have no time to let your hair air dry, then use blow-dryer sparingly and make sure you use a warm setting instead of a hot setting.

  • PATENT WAR SPILLS OVER TO NON-CANCER DRUGS

PATENT WAR SPILLS OVER TO NON-CANCER DRUGS

MUMBAI (TIP) : The turf war between Big Pharma and generic companies, which was largely restricted to exorbitantly priced drugs for cancer and HIV. is now spilling over to chronic and lifestyle problems. In yet another instance of a drug MNC losing monopoly, the Chennai Patent Office, an opposition filed by Ranbaxy, has revoked Pfizer’s patent on a drug used in urinary incontinence, which is expected to bring down its price substantially.

Significantly, the revocation of the patent may challenge Pfizer’s claims of monopoly on the Detro! formulation, experts say. The patent office recently revoked Pfizer claims on patent exclusivity for a formulation of its best-selling drug Detro!, used to manage overactive bladder symptoms. The patent office said the invention claimed in the revoked patent was found to be “prior claimed” by another patent of Pfizer on the same drug. The invention claimed in the revoked patent was also found to be obvious, and not involving any technical advancement compared to existing knowledge, legal sources say. Simply put, the invention claimed in the patent is same to the formulation on which Pfizer has monopoly rights, weakening the basic premise of the first patent.

Pfizer had two patents on Detro!, the first patent (211539) was filed in August 1999, and the second (229260) three months later in November. Though Pfizer’s first patent on Detro! is still valid, experts say that it is now under threat, as the second one has been revoked. “In case the second patent (229260) on the extended release formulation of Detro! was not revoked, Pfizer would have had almost an additional three months of monopoly up to November 2019 instead of August 2019, when the first patent (211539) on the said formulation is supposed to expire.

Generic companies are likely to use this additional three months time. Moreover, since the second patent has been revoked for being ‘prior claimed’, that is by the invention already claimed in the first one, it implies that the first patent is prone to attack on grounds of obviousness and lack of inventive step, and hence may be an inspiration for other players to attack the first patent,” said Sanchita Ganguli, patent attorney at S Majumdar, the firm which represented Ranbaxy. Ranbaxy declined to comment on its future strategy regarding opposing the first patent, now that the second has been revoked. Pfizer’s first patent on the drug is on weak ground and now prone to attack, experts say. Earlier, Ranbaxy had opposed the first patent on Detro!, and lost the case. A spokesperson from Pfizer said the company is “reviewing the decision and considering its options”.
