    STORY: A lone gunman shoots five random people in what seems like an act of mass murder. Based on evidence and his flawed past, an ex-army sniper is held as the suspect. He wants ‘Jack Reacher’ (Tom Cruise) to interrogate the case. REVIEW: The film is a cinematic adaptation of Lee Child’s 2005 novel One Shot. Jack Reacher is Child’s successful fictional character from his mystery/thriller novels.

    The film opens with a shooting scene which is disturbing since it reminds you of the current gun violence issue plaguing USA. From the suspect claiming innocence to Reacher getting tangled in the conspiracy crime himself, the ‘whodunnit’ drama keeps you engaged. For those who are unfamiliar with the books, the film does give you a brief backgrounder on Jack Reacher.

    He’s a drifter, an ex-army guy who ‘prefers to be left alone’ when he’s not investigating tough cases. Highly skilled, possessing extreme intelligence, photographic memory and raw strength, he is a man who lives by his own code of honour. Does Tom Cruise fit the bill? In the books, Reacher is described as ‘big and tall’ with ice-blue eyes and dirty blonde hair. Tom Cruise bears no physical resemblance to the character. He does not look intimidating or menacing enough for the goons.

    Thus, much has been said about Cruise being a misfit for the title role. In Cruise’s defence, he sheds his movie-star image remarkably, to play the stoic fictional hero who may not be as ‘exciting’ as his contemporaries. Reacher knows who he is unlike Jason Bourne, does not have fancy cars, clothes and gadgets like Bond, nor is he a wisecracking, fast-talking guy like Sherlock. Cruise, who is otherwise super-expressive as an actor, underplays impressively to portray Reacher. He does justice to the role but on the flipside, you constantly miss Tom Cruise’s charisma.

    Without it, the film borders on being bland in certain portions. The villain (played by director Werner Herzog) with his German accent and coloured eyes is creepy. Certain oneliners are impressive while some unintentionally funny. Action scenes look authentic. There is no loud background score. The highlight is one of the suspenseful car chase sequences, where Reacher is chasing the bad guys while being chased by the cops. It’s been shot brilliantly. The film is more of a cerebral drama than a fast-paced, modern action flick. The suspense is satisfying and so is Cruise’s ‘true to character’ performance. A lot depends on whether you like Jack Reacher, the pragmatic investigator.

    It is the wish of several seekers who have come to participate in the Sadhana Week this year that during this holy occasion a concise presentation be made of the principles expounded in the great Vedic scripture, known as the Katha Upanishad. The purpose of so many sadhakas coming from long distances to this sacred abode at the foot of the Himalayas is obvious, viz. to gain a knowledge of the secret of life and gain also an access into the mysteries in which our life seems to be involved. The aim and mission of your visit to this sacred abode is naturally, as it ought to be, the revelation or the unfoldment of the entanglement of your personality, the involvements of your life, and to return with a newer type of enlightenment about that which you are, and that which involves you or in which you are involved.

    Our life itself is the subject of study in the Katha Upanishad. Our life is a beautiful pattern of various threadwork woven dexterously by an expert Maker of all things, such that one cannot easily or intelligibly comprehend how it is made or why it is made. We often, as human beings, take life for granted, as if it is an open book before us.We regard our life as a clear presentation like daylight and go headlong along the business of our daily activities under the impression that things are perfectly perspicuous and we have simply to act on the thought that occurs to our mind. This is an unfortunate assumption on the part of the human being. The cloth of life is spread before us, but it is not a flat surface as we imagine it to be.

    In ancient times, it is said, most people imagined the world or the earth to be a flat surface; the sun rose and the sun set, illumining a perfectly flat surface of the earth, not knowing that it was round like a ball or something like that. It was also thought that the sun revolved round the earth; the sun was smaller than the size of the earth, not knowing that the revolution of the planetary system is a highly complicated involvement of powers and forces not easily reducible either merely to the sun or the planets as the earth. Today astronomy, the science of the existence and the operation of the planets and the stellar system, is known to be a highly complicated structure of forces rather than of things. Likewise we, with a crass perception of visible objects, mistaking objects seen with our senses for what they appear to be, rush like fools where even angels fear to tread.

    The consequence is that we are caught in the grip of unknown powers and forces. As monkeys are caught with the help of rope-nets spread to divert them into a mistaken idea of food being spread for them for their maintenance, likewise, the Maker of things seems to have spread out before us a pattern we call the world which we mistake for a heaven of enjoyment for our senses; but when we rush into it we are caught, and then it would be too late for us to repent. Everyone has been caught in this network of things called the world, right from creation up to the present day, and we have no reason to believe that the future generation will not be so caught. The pattern of life is not merely a location of objects for our enjoyment, for our likes and dislikes. The pattern of existence is a tremendously well thought-out involvement, externally as well as internally.

    The more we probe into the mystery and the structure of this involvement of the world, the more we begin to admire the wisdom of the Maker of things. It is not a simple structure. It is not a small ball of earth we call the planet on which we merely live like ants crawling on the surface of a ball. The world, our life, is more subtle and more involved in various ways than our intelligence can permit us to understand. This mystery is the subject of the Katha Upanishad,which is generally defined as the mystery of death and the mystery of life. Well! Both mean one and the same thing if we understand them carefully. Life and death are identical. They are two aspects of one and the same event that takes place. This mystery of life, or the mystery of death as you would like to call it, is the secret of the Katha Upanishad; and side by side it is also a revelation of the mystery of the whole of existence, the mystery of you, the mystery of me and the mystery of everyone else, the mystery of your deeds, the mystery of the reactions of your actions, the mystery of the consequences of what you do and suffer and enjoy, the mystery of God Himself.

    We shall, during these few days before us, try to have a quintessential comprehension of this very interesting Upanishad—‘Upanishad’ which means the secret knowledge or the wisdom of life—and try to be blessed in our souls that our speaking as well as listening becomes a contemplation of a particular form, a meditation, veritably, by which I pray and I wish that our souls may be lifted up into a higher knowledge and experience. The Katha Upanishad is one of the esoteric appendices to a section of the Vedas known as the Brahmanas.A particular Veda has a particular Brahmana and it has also a concluding esoteric exposition known as the Upanishad. The Katha Upanishad is such an esoteric,mystical, spiritual exposition appended to a Brahmana of the Krishna- Yajur-Veda. This Upanishad has within it implanted the wisdom of the entire life of man woven into a story of a great seeker of Reality we know as Nachiketas.

    This is the story of a great aspirant called Nachiketas; how this young lad aspired for the highest Reality of life and got an access into it through the working of mysterious forces. The story that is the background of this exposition of the Upanishad is something like this—to give you in outline. There was a sage called Vajasravasa, known also as Gautama. He performed a yajna or a sacrifice called Vishvajit, a yajna or a sacrifice by which he aspired to enter the heaven of the gods. This sacrifice was of a very peculiar nature which demanded of the performer that he gave in charity everything that he possessed, dear and near. This Vishvajit sacrifice known as the sarvavedasa yajna was performed by Gautama or Vajasravasa, the sage.

    In this yajna, through which performance he aspired to enjoy the pleasures of the heaven of the gods, he gave in charity as philanthropy everything that he possessed. All his belongings were given in charity—everything, whatever be the value of that possession— because that was the requisition of the yajna. Everything was given, and given, and given, nothing was left. Every day he began to give in charity all his possessions. This great sage known as Vajasravasa had also a son, perhaps the only son, known as Nachiketas. This unlettered boy, perhaps, untutored, simple, unsophisticated, observed this wonderful ritualistic performance of the Vishvajit sacrifice by his father,went on seeing everything being given—‘all things are going’. All the wealth of the sage was being given. Those days cattle were regarded as a great wealth. The cattle wealth was held to be real wealth. All the multitude of the cattle belonging to the sage were given in charity, but unfortunate it was to the sensitive mind of the poor lad Nachiketas, he began to observe that these cattle were famished. They were only skeletons.

    Such cows were being given in charity—the cows which had drunk their water for the last time, which had eaten their grass for the last time, which were not going to calve again, which were without any strength in the body and were tottering with their poor legs. “Oh! Such charity is being given by my father!” The boy had no guts to speak but something urged him to speak forth his feelings.

    The sensitive lad spoke out his inner heart and called out to his father, “Father, you give everything that belongs to you. I am your son. Perhaps I too belong to you. To whom do you propose to give me in charity? Because in this sacrifice you have to offer everything that belongs to you, and inasmuch as a son also seems to be a property of the father to some extent, evidently you think of giving me also. To whom do you want to give me?” The father had no idea of giving the son in charity to anyone. It was the last thing that he could imagine. The father paid a deaf ear to the words of the son. He said nothing. The second time the son asked the same question, “To whom do you want to give me, father?” He did not say anything. He was wroth. “Oh, this boy is butting in and impertinently putting me a question!” When a third time the boy asked the same question, the father responded, “To hell you go.” This is what we generally say when we are irate. And he said, “To death I give you.” He was angry. “Oh, I see! You give me to death.” The boy went on thinking, “What has death to do with me, death presided over by Yama? I am being sent to him. What has Yama, the Lord of Death, to do with me? I do not understand.”

    STORY: Super-cop Chulbul Pandey moves to Kanpur – where he crosses guns with vicious Bachcha Bhaiyya. Can Chulbul swing it a second time?

    MOVIE REVIEW: Yes, Chulbul (Salman) swings it a second time – and hits home harder. Dabanng 2 is actually a better film than the first, tighter, brighter and sharper. Featuring explosive action and fine detailing – the Pandeys move to Kanpur where cows block the streets, Chulbul asking his hawaldar, “Hum kisi khet mein ghus aaye hain?”, and being told, “Nahin sir, main chauraha hai,” – Dabanng 2 never takes its eye off its heart – Salman Khan. This is an unapologetic star vehicle driven by Khan who rolls an SUV over with one hand, takes lakhs for his ‘police welfare fund’ with another, romances wife Rajjo (Sonakshi) with tangible tenderness, dances wild jigs with controlled abandon. Dabanng 2 is Salman’s show all the way, every second line – “Ye Kung Fu Pandey hain!” – homage to his Chulbul.

    But Dabangg 2 features other delights too, like its detailing of local flavour down to the 1980s Bhojpuri hit ‘Phulauri bina chutney’ playing at a function, its kitschy-cutesy touches (Chulbul’s belt dances the Dabangg step on its own), its moffusil-like low-voltage lighting, its heroine Sonakshi glowing with pretty appeal. It features a nice show by Vinod Khanna as Chulbul’s reconciled stepfather and tolerable acting by Prakash Raj as Kanpur’s creepy Bachcha Bhaiyya, Deepak Dobriyal his slimy sibling Genda. There are crackling good lines (when Genda’s abducting a girl, a hawaldar muses, “Personality ke hisab se, kuch zyada nahin bol raha?”) and rainbowlike music, ranging from the soft ‘Dagabaaz naina’ to the electric ‘Aadat badi naaspiti, Pandey-ji bajaye duty pe seeti’ channeling the classic ‘Pinjare wali muniya’, mixing it up with a glittering guest visit by Munni (Malaika Khan). Arbaaz Khan’s direction is commendable – he maximises his main star, maintains balance and keeps the movie tight.

    There are some loose strands – an SP eating ‘pisa’ becomes annoyingly heavy, Sonakshi’s acting stays lean, some jokes are saccharine-like – but at the end, Salman’s shirt comes off, so it’s all cool. Taking this franchise forward, Dabangg 2 presents a sewaiyyan Western where hot-cop Chulbul is cowboy and stud. If you’re up for fun that’s purely tongue-incheek, this will give you bangs for your buck.

    Deepika Padukone may have chartered a successful Bollywood career for herself in a short span but the actress says she is rarely happy with her work. The 25-year-old says her selfcriticism helps her do better with each film. “I am very harsh on myself. I am very rarely satisfied with my own work but I am glad that it is like this. I would rather be harsh on myself than be happy with the smallest thing that I do. I compete with myself and challenge myself to do better everyday. It gives me the drive to push myself otherwise I would be stuck in the rut,” Deepika said. She proved that she is more than a pretty face with her powerful performance as Veronica in Cocktail, her lone release this year.

    “I am glad that this film happened for people to realise that. I have always believed in my work and myself but sometimes you have to wait for the right script and opportunity to come your way. Cocktail did that for me.” She has already won an award for her performance in the film. Deepika, however, says she is more happy to see that the audiences’ perception about her has changed for good. “I think awards are always welcome. Big Star awards recently acknowledged my contribution. But I am more happy about the energy shift that I feel from the audiences post Veronica. There is nothing in the world that compensates for that feeling.”

    With her latest film Race 2 ready to hit the screens on January 25, Deepika says she is looking forward to 2013. “I could not have asked for more this year. I invested a lot emotionally into the character of Veronica and I am very happy with the result. It has been a great year for me not only in terms of Cocktail’s success but also with the kind of films that I signed post that. I have an interesting lineup for 2013.” Deepika is looking forward to a busy year in 2013 with Race 2, Kochadaiyaan and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani releases. She has also reunited with Shah Rukh Khan for Chennai Express after Om Shanti Om besides working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Ram Leela.

Researchers from Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia, found that within hours of drinking beetroot juice, a group of healthy men saw their blood pressure drop by an average of four to five points. While that number may seem small, WebMD writes that “on a public health level a reduction like that would equate to a 10 percent reduction in deaths due to heart disease.”

    “It’s promising that we can see an effect from a single dose,” the New York Daily News quoted Dr. Leah Coles as saying. “That effect might be even greater over the long term if they are drinking it day upon day,” Coles said. The study involved 15 men and 15 women who drank 17.6 ounces of a drink containing about three-fourths beetroot juice and one-fourth apple juice or a placebo drink. Among both men and women, blood pressure levels dropped six hours after drinking the beet juice.

    But it was the men who saw the most significant difference, an average of about 4.7 points among the beetroot juice drinkers. While beetroots contain hearthealthy compounds like vitamins C and K, fiber and polyphenols, scientists claim it’s the high nitrate content that’s likely responsible for the ability to reduce blood pressure.     SINGAPORE (TIP): Scientists have warned of moregreat earthquakes – of the magnitude 8 to 8.5 – in theHimalayas, especially in areas with their surface yet tobe broken by a temblor.A research team led by Nanyang TechnologicalUniversity (NTU) has discovered that massiveearthquakes in the range of 8 to 8.5 magnitudes on theRichter scale have left clear ground scars in the centralHimalayas.

    This ground-breaking discovery has huge implicationsfor the area along the front of the Himalayan Mountains,researchers said in a statement.Paul Tapponnier, a leading neotectonics scientist, saidthat the existence of such devastating quakes in the pastmeans that quakes of the same magnitude could happenagain in the region in future, especially in areas whichhave yet to have their surface broken by a temblor.The study showed that in 1255 and 1934, two greatearthquakes ruptured the surface of the earth in theHimalayas.

    This runs contrary to what scientists havepreviously thought.Massive earthquakes are not unknown in theHimalayas, as quakes in 1897, 1905, 1934 and 1950 all hadmagnitudes between 7.8 and 8.9, each causingtremendous damage. But they were previously thoughtnot to have broken the earth’s surface – classified as blindquakes – which are much more difficult to track.However, Tapponnier said that by combining new highresolution imagery and state of the art datingtechniques, they could show that the 1934 earthquake didindeed rupture the surface, breaking the ground over alength of more than 150 kilometres, essentially south ofthe part of the range that harbours Mount Everest.

    This break formed along the main fault in Nepal thatcurrently marks the boundary between the Indian andAsian tectonic plates – also known as the Main FrontalThrust (MFT) fault.Using radiocarbon dating of offset river sedimentsand collapsed hill-slope deposits, the researchersmanaged to separate several episodes of tectonicmovement on this major fault and pin the dates of thetwo quakes, about 7 centuries apart.Tapponnier warns that the long interval between thetwo recently discovered earthquake ruptures does notmean people should be complacent, thinking that thereis still time before the next major earthquake happens inthe region.

The CoolSculpting treatment, which can be done during a lunch hour, is proving particularly popular with men who do not want surgery or liposuction, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. The procedure is done with a machine that uses vacuum pressure and deep cooling to target fat. It freezes unwanted fat cells in the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms and back.

    Patients can even read a book or watch a film while undergoing the treatment. It is used for small areas of fat that refuse to budge with exercise, and is done without anaesthetic or medication. Dr Grant Stevens, a plastic surgeon at Marina Plastic Surgery, which has so far done 4000 procedures in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, claimed he had his love handles done himself. After the treatment the fat dies, the skin tightens, and it’s incredibly easy only takes about an hour, he explained. He added the fat once frozen doesn’t come back. Moreover there are no incisions, scars or suction hoses, he said.

    Only 13 per cent of his usual clientele are men, but for fat freezing it rises to 45 per cent. The men have their love handles treated. The other place is the tummy, and they also have their man boobs done. Women go for love handles, muffin tops, the thighs and arms, Dr Stevens stated. Dr Mathew Avram, of the Massachusetts General Hospital, who helped to create the technique, said it targeted and cooled fat cells to temperatures that ””trigger their natural death””. But doctors have warned that the system, which was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2010, is not a weight-loss treatment.

    LONDON (TIP): NASA engineers were amazed after clicking a latest picture of the Sun which appeared to be “winking at them”. The image, which actually reveals sunspots caused by intense magnetic activity, was taken on December 22, just a few minutes after the Mayan doomsday prophecy proved to be wrong. Eruptions of magnetic activity on the solar surface appear to make the Sun ‘wink’ at the time many believed the world would end passed, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.

    The picture, which was taken by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), has echoes of the famous image from the 1902 French film ‘A Trip To The Moon’, which is regarded as the first science fiction movie. “Despite reports of an ancient Maya prophecy, a mysterious planet on a collision course with Earth, or a reverse in Earth’s rotation, we’re still here,” NASA spokesperson said.

    “The Mayan connection was a misconception from the very beginning,” said Dr John Carlson, director of the Center for Archaeoastronomy. “The Maya calendar did not end on December 21, 2012, and there were no Maya prophecies foretelling the end of the world on that date,” he said. The mesmerising pictures show the energy thrown off by the Sun in wavelengths invisible to the human eye such as X-rays and ultraviolet light. The pictures have allowed scientists with new understanding of how the Sun works.

    LONDON (TIP): Scientists are designing a new ambitious robotic humanoid helper with artificial muscles to help people with everyday tasks. Engineers at the University of Zurich’s Artificial Intelligence Lab hope that 1.2 metre tall Roboy, designed to look like a child, will help the sick and elderly by acting as a mechanical helper.

    The research team is developing radical artificial ‘tendons’ to help the robot move, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported. They have already signed up 15 project partners and over 40 engineers, and hope to fund the project using a combination of commercial partners and crowd-funding. Researchers hope Roboy will become a blueprint for ‘service robots’ that work alongside humans. “Service robots are machines that are, to a certain extent, able to execute services independently for the convenience of human beings. Since they share their ‘living space’ with people, userfriendliness and safety are of great importance,” researchers said. The project will use artificial tendons to develop Roboy within nine months. Roboy will be unveiled in March 2013 at the Robots on Tour event in Zurich.

Although the Magic Closet is a lab project, it’s almost ready for store shelves, Si Liu and Shuicheng Yan, computer scientists at the National University of Singapore , wrote to the website. “The Magic Closet can be used as a mobile personalized clothes management app. It can also be used as a plug-in system in online shops (eg, amazon.com, ebay.com) to help customers to choose suitable clothes,” they said.

    Have you seen the sea disappear in front of your eyes? A unique phenomenon rarely seen anywhere else, the sea recedes by as much as five kilometres every day on the Chandipur beach in eastern India, not just enthralling the onlooker but also offering an opportunity to literally walk into the sea. One of nature’s many wonders, the sea recedes massively from the beach during ebb and returns to fill the emptiness during high tide. This hide-and-seek of the sea comes to play twice a day and seeing the sea disappear and then return is an unforgettable experience. Chandipur lies around 200 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

    From here, one can either take the train to Balasore, the closest town at a distance of 10 km, and then travel by road, or take the entire journey by road on National Highway 5. One can be assured of a good journey thanks to the green scenery that follows you throughout and good roads. Adding to the peaceful ambience are the swaying casuarina trees and the solitary sand dunes, with the constant hum of the waves as they rise and fall gently. Considering its uniqueness, the beach supports a varied range of biodiversity.

    It’s not rare to thus find a horseshoe crab or red crab crawling beside you. While it’s still not very well known among tourists who flock to its cousin beaches of Puri, or the temple destination of Konark, local tourists often visit Chandipur. “My wife and I saw the sea disappear in front of our eyes, and we walked in the sea bed, almost for four kilometres, and then returned with the gentle water when the high tide came,” Anirban Mukherjee, a tourist from the nearby state of West Bengal, said. “It was like returning with the sea. The massive void left behind by the waters, the path we took, was soon filled up and it was as if we had walked into the sea. This beach is nothing like the other beaches,” said his wife Arpita.

    For some, it’s not just walking but also riding a bike into the sea. When asked if it was dangerous for people to ride a bike into the sea bed with the impending high tide, Dasarath Dash, a coconut seller by the beachside, said no. “The tide has its timings. Depending on the moon, the timings keep changing. It’s mostly the locals, familiar with the tide’s time, who take their bikes into the sea bed. The others are thrilled just to even walk that distance,” Dash said. “In any case, the sea is not rough here. The waves are gentle,” he said. Food is another plus point here. For those who love sea food, here’s a place which can offer you plenty, especially fresh prawns. The Chandipur beach is also well known for its proximity to the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Integrated Test Range.

    A number of missiles have been launched from here, including Akash, Agni, Shaurya and Prithvi ballistic missiles. There is a handful of small hotels – with a tariff range of Rs.500 to Rs.2,500 per day – and a government guesthouse in Chandipur. There are no 5-Star hotels in the area. One can also opt to stay in Balasore. “The best time to visit Chandipur is winter, between November and March, and most tourists come during this time,” Dash said. The tourism department has also been trying to promote Chandipur and other spots nearby as potential tourist destinations. An elaborate beach festival, showcasing the dance forms, art and culture of the state, has become an annual affair here and takes place every February. “I really hope proper infrastructure can be put in place so that the Chandipur beach attracts more tourists and the locals around can benefit. Right now we mostly have local tourists and those from the neighbouring states. The number of foreign tourists is still very low compared to Puri,” said Ubachan Mohanty, a local.

Findings from the study of sexual and sexual-health behaviours conducted by Indiana University has provided an updated and much needed snapshot of contemporary Americans’ sexual behaviours, including a description of more than 40 combinations of sexual acts that people perform during sexual events, patterns of condom use by adolescents and adults, and the percentage of Americans participating in same-sex encounters.

    The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behaviour (NSSHB) is one of the most comprehensive studies on these topics in almost two decades and documents the sexual experiences and condom-use behaviours of 5,865 adolescents and adults ages 14 to 94. According to the study’s findings, one of four acts of vaginal intercourse are condom protected in the U.S. (one in three among singles).

    “These data about sexual behaviours and condom use in contemporary America are critically needed by medical and public health professionals who are on the front lines addressing issues such as HIV, sexually transmissible infections and unintended pregnancy,” said Michael Reece of the Centre for Sexual Health Promotion.Debby Herbenick, of the CSHP said Herbenick said: “Findings show that condoms are used twice as often with casual sexual partners as with relationship partners, a trend that is consistent for both men and women across age groups that span 50 years.” The report has also suggested that adults using a condom for intercourse were just as likely to rate the sexual extent positively in terms of arousal, pleasure and orgasm than when having intercourse without one. Many older adults continue to have active pleasurable sex lives, reporting a range of different behaviours and partner types, however adults over the age of 40 have the lowest rates of condom use.
