  • From Cancer Lab to Dancing to Eradicate Curable Blindness

From Cancer Lab to Dancing to Eradicate Curable Blindness

NEW YORK (TIP): When cancer biologist Dr.Arti Datta turned inward and decided to pursue her passion for dance a decade ago, little did she know she was on a path to taking her interest to a whole new level, with the founding of the non profit The Mudra Foundation: Art for a Cause.

The debut production of the non-profit titled WATER: The Flow of the Divine held on the 27th of April, thrilled, inspired and educated the packed audience at the Madison Theater in Rockville Center, NY. Planned as the 10th Anniversary celebration of Mudra Dance Studio, Muttontown, NY, it was held as a benefit concert for Sankara Eye Foundation, the renowned organization that’s committed to eradicating curable blindness in rural India. “All through civilization water has connected people, cultures and continents.

The inspiration behind Water: the Flow of the Divine, is not just to connect the medium of dance to an altruistic cause but also to connect various talented artistes within Long Island and New York City to come together symbiotically”, said Dr.Arti Datta. The program opened auspiciously with a shloka on Apah – water in Sanskrit, by Dr. Sanjay Doddamani.

This was followed by a sequence of dances rendered in the Bharathanatyam, Kathak, Odissi and Mohiniattam traditions, each interpreting water in their own unique style. The dances educated audiences on a variety of water-related concepts like, the descent of the Ganges, the significance of the Kalasha and the birth of Brahma in a lotus, among others.

Semi classical dances set to the composition of esteemed artistes like Gulzar, Bikram Ghosh and Shanker Mahadevan brought out other dimensions of water. A splash of lighthearted folk dances added variety and flair to the lineup. There were exquisitely rendered guest performances by Vaishali Chaudhuri, Mala Desai, Preya Patel and Aarati Ramanand and their students as well as the schools of Savitri Ramanand, Syed Tirmizi and Swati Vaishnav.

One of the highlights of the evening was a moving performance by Dr.Arti Datta along with her daughters Tanya and Saumya. “The Mudra Foundation: Art for a Cause is a long nurtured dream. What better time to bring it to fruition than on the 10th Anniversary of my dance school. Like they say – you can’t stop an idea whose time has come!” said Dr. Arti Datta, Founder President of the non-profit.

An interesting deviation from the water theme was a performance by senior students of The Mudra Dance Studio that was especially choreographed as a dedication to the Sankara Eye Foundation. The NY chapter coordinator of SEF, Ms. Kanika Marwaha addressed the audience eloquently and gave an overview of their goals and vision for the next decade. The host of the evening was thoracic surgeon, Dr. Shahriyour Andaz.

Dr.Arti Datta was recently nominated by the India Association of Long Island (IALI) as one of “The Most Influential People in the Indian -American Community”. • Senate Judiciary Committee approves immigration bill with bipartisan vote

Senate Judiciary Committee approves immigration bill with bipartisan vote

WASHINGTON (TIP): In what could be described as a further development in the right direction, the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved far-reaching immigration legislation that gives a chance at citizenship to more than 11 million undocumented workers already living in the country. The 13-5 vote clears the bill for a Senate debate expected to begin in early June.

Committee approval came after the panel’s chairman sidestepped a showdown on the rights of gay spouses, heeding appeals from the White House and others who feared such a vote could lead to the bill’s demise in the Senate. On a final day of drafting, the panel also agreed to a lastminute compromise covering an increase in the visa program for high-tech workers. The landmark legislation creates new provisions to bring workers here legally and enforce against illegal immigration, as well as creating a path to citizenship for 11 million here illegally.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approval was greeted with cheers by the supporters of the immigration overhaul. Earlier, on May 16, a bipartisan group in the House working on an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws reached a deal in principle. The group plans to introduce its bill in the House in June.

It is believed the House legislation will include a path to legalization for more than 11 million undocumented workers already living in the country as well as increased border security measures. With the Senate Judiciary Committee clearing the legislation and the bipartisan House group planning to introduce immigration overhaul bill, the immigration overhaul seems to be heading in the right direction.

Indian American Media miffed at Home Minister shying away from media interaction

NEW YORK (TIP): India’s Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde was in town for two days on May 22 and 23. It is learnt he met with selected people at the Consulate on May 22. But he did not have an interaction with the media. This has prompted an angry protest from the Indian American media.

An angry senior journalist wondered if there was a gag order for the Minister because every time he opened his mouth he embarrassed himself, his party and his government with his gaffe. |Or, he chose not to speak for fear of another embarrassing gaffe, that too, on a foreign soil? Well, the Minister’s choosing to play the invisible Ariel of Shakespeare’s The Tempest or a more desi Bapu ka bandar in keeping his mouth shut, has not amused the media fraternity here.

The Indian Panorama editor shot off a letter of protest to the Consul General Mr. Mulay and another to the Home Minister Mr. Shinde. Both the letters are being reproduced ad verbatim for the benefit of our readers.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: The Reluctant Fundamentalist

    MOVIE REVIEW: The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Cast: Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer
    Sutherland, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi
    Direction: Mira Nair
    Genre: Thriller
    Duration: 2 hours 12 minutes

STORY: The film is a gripping adaptation of Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid’s acclaimed novel on conflicting ideologies and a search for identity, beyond religion.

REVIEW: Can you be who you really are when the world around you forces you to believe otherwise? 9/11 changed the West’s perception of Islam forever. While various films have had the unsettling issue as a backdrop, Mira Nair’s riveting adaptation goes way deeper. Its sensitive yet unsubtle narrative succeeds at retaining the book’s ambiguity, as well as raising pertinent questions on Islamic fundamentalism, emigration and USA’s interference in Pakistan. Nair captures the finer nuances of the thought-provoking tale with great conviction. Hard-working immigrant Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed) is happy living his American dream. Confident and talented, he’s considered as a promising financial analyst at the renowned Wall Street business valuation firm, Underwood Samson. While he’s busy climbing the corporate ladder and finding love in Erica (Hudson), an artist, the twin towers are attacked. As a Muslim in the US, the act of extreme violence not only shatters hopes of Changez’s bright future, but also makes him question his ideologies, objectivity and identity. The beauty of the film lies in the depiction of its protagonist’s unspoken words, suppressed emotions and unwavering beliefs. The incredibly talented Riz Ahmed enables the film to deconstruct the meaning of ‘fundamentalism’, which forms the core of the story. What leaves you in awe of the adapted screenplay is its brilliantly drawn parallels between Changez’s personal, political and social situation. You feel his pain, vulnerability, denial, inner turmoil and psychological conflict. The film keeps you thoroughly engaged, even in parts where the pace drops a bit. While the film is more of a thriller, it doesn’t cease to be a human drama, thanks to sublime supporting performances from Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Meesha Shafi. The music is soulful. Songs like Kangna, Bijli Aaye ya na aaye help build the mood. Cinematography is impressive and in sync with Nair’s trademark style of storytelling. Poignant and relevant, the film will Pakistan differently.

    ANGELINA’S DOC BLOGS MASTECTOMY DETAILS

Angelina Jolie’s doctor has written the details of the actress’ double mastectomy with the aim of helping women understand the preventive treatment. Dr Kristi Funk wrote that just four days after the 37-year-old star underwent her mastectomies, she was pleased to find Jolie in good spirits with bountiful energy, and saw her working with freshly assembled storyboards on her walls for the next movie that she is about to direct, the Guardian reported. Funk asserted in her blog that all the while that Jolie spoke, six drains were dangling from her chest, three on either side, fastened to an elastic belt around her waist.

The Oscar-winner got both her breasts removed on February 16 at the Pink Lotus Breast Centre in Beverly Hills, California, to reduce her breast cancer risk from 87 percent to 5 percent. Despite her fame and constant hounding by media, her treatment remained a secret until Tuesday, when she herself chose to reveal about it in a New York Times article. She approved Funk’s account of her treatment to help women at high cancer risk and to help them understand what is involved if they choose to undergo surgery rather than regular scans and preventive drugs as a way of managing their risk.

  • Go Goa Gone

    Go Goa Gone

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari,
    Pooja Gupta
    Direction: Krishna D.K., Raj Nidimoru
    Genre: Comedy
    Duration: 1 hour 37 minutes

STORY: In a first of its kind zomcom(zombie-comedy) three friends gatecrash a rave party on an island and find themselves attacked by zombies the morning after. Will they make it the shore safely?

MOVIE REVIEW: So who’s a zombie? For some it’s a sleep-derived person who walks around as if in a trance. For others, it’s a soulless creature who can be revived by witchcraft. But in Krishna D K and Raj Nidimoru’s Go Goa Gone, the zombies are some interesting creatures who’ve overdosed on a drug that is said to be more dangerous than MDMA, or Ecstasy as most of us know it. And now these living people have turned into a braindead lot who know nothing but hunger. So where do you find these zombies. Wait. Let’s start at the beginning. Three fun-seeking friends—Kunal Khemu(Hardik), Vir Das(Luv) and Anand Tiwari(Bunny) join Puja Gupta(Luna) at a rave party in Goa.

Their host is a Russian Don—Saif Ali Khan(Boris). The night is young; the company vivacious. Drinks are aplenty and the drugs lethal. As the party reaches a crescendo, the friends find themselves enthralled. Alas, there’s a price to be paid. Each of the three friends wakes up the next morning `wasted’ and in fairly interesting company. They have a zombie or two in their vicinity. Scared out of their wits, the three friends and their girlfriend, Luna, run for their lives. But it isn’t that easy. The island is now home to a large group of fastmutliplying zombies, who are eager to make these human-beings `meat’ for their insatiable appetite. Boris, their knight-in-shining-armour attempts to rescue them but the zombies are not easy to shake off. As the part hilarious, part scary adventure continues, you find yourself laughing aloud with the three boys and their wisecracks.

And you also find yourself scared shitless of the zombies who keep cropping up unannounced in their creepy avatar. Go Goa Gone is positively different from anything you seen before. And for the young and restless(tattooed, ring-pierced, rave-party enthusiasts) or even those who like whacked-out fun, it’s a great ride. With easy performances from Kunal, Saif, Vir and Anand and the crackerjack dialogue, the film will keep you in splits for the most part. What is a little tiring though,is the pace of the zombies, who are a bit too monotonous. Sachin- Jigar’s Babaji ki booti adds to the mood, almost tempting you to light up and lie back. The shores of Goa and Mauritius seem enticing enough. However some of the situations in GGG are repititive. Hence, the laughs that were coming spontaneously till a point become a bit forced at some juncture.

  • FOODS THAT PREVENT BREAST CANCER

    FOODS THAT PREVENT BREAST CANCER

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has predicted that by 2020 the number of breast cancer cases will jump to an alarming figure and one in every eight women would run the risk of developing the disease in her lifetime. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) too, concluded that over the last two decades there has been a steep rise in the statistics pertaining to women being diagnosed with breast cancer. So grave is the scenario that in India, breast cancer has been declared the most common form of cancer, almost surpassing cervical cancer as the deadliest of all cancers. Early detection and regular medical-checkups are compulsory, but at the same time it is important that our diet and the food we eat prepare us to fight malignant cancer cells at the onset.

Tina Sapra, senior clinical nutritionist & coordinator with Fortis Memorial Research Institute and Dr Vandana Mathur, consulting nutritionist, Metropolis Healthcare, Mumbai, give us an insight into the top foods that can prevent breast cancer risk in women. The doctors discuss age groups most vulnerable to the disease and also inform us about the foods that should be avoided in daily diet to keep cancer cell growth in check. Foods that prevent Breast Cancer Flaxseed You can get flax either as whole seed, ground or flaxseed oil. The omega-3s, lignans and fibre found in flaxseed are found to form a protective shield against cancer cells responsible for causing breast cancer. Include flax to yogurt or a smoothie to create a richer and nutty flavour. You can add flaxseed oil to salad dressings too or integrate them into baked goods, such as cookies or muffins.

Brazil nuts Uniquely rich in selenium, fibre, and phytochemicals, Brazil nuts can help fight inflammation, improve the immune system and prevent tumour growth. And you do not need many of them—a palmful can do the trick. Enjoy them as any other nut either with fruits or asparagus (contains the anti-cancer component, chlorophyll). Garlic Rich source of cancer-fighting compound called allium, garlic and its relatives (onion, leeks, scallions, and chives) are shown to slow tumour growth and prevent breast cancer risk among other forms of cancer such as colorectal and prostate cancers. Garlic and onions are found in a variety of foods including Italian, Spanish, Indian, Thai and Chinese dishes. Crush or swallow a piece of garlic every morning and that’s all it takes to live a cancer-free life! Pomegranate This is highly recommended for preventing breast cancer.

It contains polyphenol- an ellagic acid with antioxidant properties that prevent cancer growth. Include this delicious fruit in your diet and discover effective health benefits. Dark-green leafy vegetables From kale, collards to spinach and Swiss chard, darkgreen leafy vegetables probably are considered a “one stop shop” for all the best nutrients your body needs to fend off cancerous cells, i.e. fibre, vitamin B, phytochemicals, chlorophyll and more. It’s time to add some greens to your diet. Salmon A great source of omega-3s and vitamins B12 and D, salmon can provide your body with the nutrients it needs to regulate cell growth and prevent cancer. In fact, certain types of Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) are proven effective in cancer treatment.

Steam it, bake it, grill it or saute it. This fish is a great option and pairs well with many foods like garlic, dark-green leafy vegetables, turmeric, peppers and broccoli. Broccoli and broccoli sprouts As a cruciferous (belonging to the plant family Cruciferae) vegetable along with cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale; broccoli is rich in sulforophane and indoles, which are shown to regulate cell growth in multiple ways and help fight a range of cancers, including breast, bladder, lymphoma, prostate and lung cancer. Green tea Consumption on a regular basis has been linked to lower incidence of breast cancer.

The phyto-chemicals in green tea can well take the credit for its health benefits. One to two cups of green tea daily can help you keep cancer at bay. Peppers Pick a pepper, any pepper! Most have some phytochemical or nutrient that will help fight cancer. Chilli and jalapeno peppers have capsaicin (an active component of chilli peppers) that fight the growth rate of cancer cells. Green peppers are rich in chlorophyll which can bind cancer-causing carcinogens found in the gut. Red peppers have both capsaicin and antioxidant carotenoids. Put them in a vegetable stir-fry or eat them with hummus. Turmeric A spice commonly found in our country cancerfighting compound called curcumin can inhibit many types of cancer cells, including breast, gastrointestinal, lung, and skin cancer. A pinch of turmeric fights toughest of cancer-causing cells.

  • Lower Your Blood Pressure In 6 Easy Steps

Lower Your Blood Pressure In 6 Easy Steps

High blood pressure affects 1 in 3 individuals and can cause serious and irreversible damage. Yet, those affected can be completely unaware of their condition. Fortunately, the control button is your hands. Because high blood pressure increases the risk of heart diseases, kidney diseases and diabetes, the WHO will be focusing on hypertension throughout the year. High blood pressure has come to be known as a ‘silent killer’ and affects every third person above the age of 18. The proportion increases with age, from 1 in 10 people in their 20s and 30s to 5 in 10 people in their 50s, as per the World Health Organisation (WHO). Early detection is important and all adults need to know their blood pressure or keep tabs on the same. Early diagnosis check ups cost less than the long-term costs and complications of untreated high blood pressure. Although high BP does not have a cure, it can be managed or prevented by low-cost lifestyle changes and medication as prescribed by your doctor.

You can reduce your blood pressure by making some small changes in your life.

    1. Cut the salt: Limiting sodium helps control high blood pressure in those who have it and helps prevent it in those who don’t. The WHO recommends no more than 2,000 mg of sodium or five grams of salt — the equivalent of one tea spoon — per day. Beware especially of processed and packaged foods, fast foods, and canned foods – all common sources of excessive salt.

    2. Eat potassium: This mineral helps lower blood pressure. The recommended daily intake for adults is 3,510 mg. Potassium-rich foods include: beans and peas (approximately 1,300 mg of potassium per 100 g), nuts (approximately 600 mg/100 g), vegetables such as spinach, cabbage and parsley (approximately 550 mg/100 g) and fruits such as bananas, papayas and dates (approximately 300 mg/100 g).

    3. Modify your diet: Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables for fibre and reduce processed foods in your diet. Avoid salty food like sauces, pickles, chips etc. Fruits and vegetables are low in sodium and high in potassium which helps in lowering blood pressure. Reduce fatty and fried food, especially saturated fats/transfats and replace them with polyunsaturated fats.

    4. Check your weight: Blood pressure tends to increase as weight does. Every five kg of excess weight lost can reduce systolic blood pressure by two to 10 points. Fortunately, it’s also true that BP tends to drop as weight does. For optimum health, an adult should maintain a Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure of body fat based on height and weight, between 18.5 to 24.9 Kg/m2.

    5. Exercise: Stressful situations can cause temporary BP spikes therefore being physically active is one of the most important things you can do to prevent or control high blood pressure. Getting enough sleep, deep breathing, meditation, yoga, and exercising for at least 30 minutes daily can help reduce stress. Examples of moderate activities are brisk walking, cycling, gardening and housework. 6. Limit alcohol: Not only does too much alcohol raise blood pressure, repeated excess drinking can lead to long-term BP increases. It is important to limit your alcohol intake.

Yes, you should spend some time together, but your man will really appreciate it if you let him spend an evening with his buddies. Ensure that you don’t call him during the time when he is with his friends.

    Appreciate things he does

Even if it’s something simple, try and tell him how much you appreciate his help around the house. More then the praise and attention that you shower on him, it’s this appreciation that will make him fall in love with you all over again.

  • Symbolism Of Hindu Deities

    Symbolism Of Hindu Deities

The Vedic deities symbolize the forces in nature as well as inside human beings. While discussing the symbolic significance of Vedic deities in his The Secret of the Vedas, Rishi Aurobindo says that the gods, goddesses and demons mentioned in the Vedas represent various cosmic powers, on one hand and man’s virtues and vices on the other.

    Why Worship Idol?

Idol worship and rituals are at the heart of Hinduism have great religious and philosophical significance. All Hindu deities are themselves symbols of the abstract Absolute, and point to a particular aspect of the Brahman. The Hindu Trinity is represented by three Godheads: Brahma – the creator, Vishnu – the protector and Shiva – the destroyer.

    Why Worship Different Deities?

Unlike the followers of any other religion, Hindus enjoy the freedom of worshipping their personally chosen icon to offer their prayers to the indefinable Brahman. Each deity in Hinduism controls a particular energy. These energies, present in man as wild forces must be controlled and canalized fruitfully to infuse a divine consciousness in him. For this, man has to gain the goodwill of different gods who stir up his consciousness accordingly to help him master the different forces of nature. In a person’s path of spiritual progress, he or she needs to develop the various attributes of these godheads in him or her to attain all-round spiritual

    Symbolism of Gods & Goddesses

Each Hindu God and Goddess has many characteristics, like dress, ‘vehicle’, weapons, etc., that are themselves symbols of the deity’s power. Brahma holds the Vedas in his hands, which signifies that he has the supreme command over creative and religious knowledge. Vishnu holds a conch which stands for the five elements and eternity; a discus, which is the symbol of the mind; a bow that symbolizes power and a lotus which is the symbol of the cosmos. Shiva’s trident represents the three gunas. Similarly Krishna’s flute symbolizes divine music. Many deities can be recognized by the symbols associated with them. Shiva is often symbolized by the ‘linga’ or ‘tripundra’ – the three horizontal lines on his forehead. In the same way Krishna can be identified by the peacock feather he wears in his head and also by the prong-like mark on his forehead.

    Vehicles of the Gods

Each deity has a particular vehicle on which he or she travels. These vehicle, which are either animals or birds, represent the various forces that he or she rides. Goddess Saraswati’s vehicle, the graceful and beautiful peacock denotes that she is the controller of the pursuit of performing arts. Vishnu sits on the primal serpent, which represents the desire of consciousness in humankind. Shiva rides the Nandi bull, which stands for the brute and blind power, as well as the unbridled sexual energy in man – the qualities only he can help us control. His consort Parvati, Durga or Kali rides on a lion, which symbolizes mercilessness, anger and pride – vices she can help her devotees check. Ganesha’s carrier, the mouse represents the timidity and nervousness that overwhelm us at the onset of any new venture – feelings that can be overcome by the blessings of Ganesha.

  • Ganesha: Lord Of Success

    Ganesha: Lord Of Success

Ganesha — the elephant-deity riding a mouse — has become one of the commonest mnemonics for anything associated with Hinduism. This not only suggests the importance of Ganesha, but also shows how popular and pervasive this deity is in the minds of the masses.

    The Lord of Succss

The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge potbellied body of a human being. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga being the other four) whose idolatry is glorified as the panchayatana puja.

    Significance of the Ganesha Form

Ganesha’s head symbolizes the Atman or the soul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human existence, and his human body signifies Maya or the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head denotes wisdom and its trunk represents Om, the sound symbol of cosmic reality. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad, which helps him propel mankind forward on the eternal path and remove obstacles from the way. The noose in Ganesha’s left hand is a gentle implement to capture all difficulties. The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. The laddoo (sweet) he holds in his trunk indicates that one must discover the sweetness of the Atman. His fan-like ears convey that he is all ears to our petition. The snake that runs round his waist represents energy in all forms. And he is humble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, a mouse.

    How Ganesha Got His Head

The story of the birth of this zoomorphic deity, as depicted in the Shiva Purana, goes like this: Once goddess Parvati, while bathing, created a boy out of the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boy’s head in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made him the leader (pati) of his troops. Hence his name ‘Ganapati’. Shiva also bestowed a boon that people would worship him and invoke his name before undertaking any venture. However, there’s another less popular story of his origin, found in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana: Shiva asked Parvati to observe the punyaka vrata for a year to appease Vishnu in order to have a son. When a son was born to her, all the gods and goddesses assembled to rejoice on its birth. Lord Shani, the son of Surya (Sun- God), was also present but he refused to look at the infant. Perturbed at this behaviour, Parvati asked him the reason, and Shani replied that his looking at baby would harm the newborn. However, on Parvati’s insistence when Shani eyed the baby, the child’s head was severed instantly. All the gods started to bemoan, whereupon Vishnu hurried to the bank of river Pushpabhadra and brought back the head of a young elephant, and joined it to the baby’s body, thus reviving it.

    Ganesha, the Destroyer of Pride

Ganesha is also the destroyer of vanity, selfishness and pride. He is the personification of material universe in all its various magnificent manifestations. “All Hindus worship Ganesha regardless of their sectarian belief,” says D N Singh in A Study of Hinduism. “He is both the beginning of the religion and the meeting ground for all Hindus.”

Mars Battered By Over 200 Space Rocks Every Year

MUMBAI (TIP): The red planet has been bombarded by more than 200 small asteroids or bits of comets annually forming craters which are atleast 3.9 metres across, according to Nasa. This has been revealed from images from Nasa’s $720- million Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) which was launched on August 12, 2005. The mission’s original life span was for two years, but it has stretched to six. According to Nasa, researchers have identified 248 new impact sites on parts of the Martian surface in the past decade, using images from MRO to determine when the craters appeared. The 200-per-year planetwide estimate is a calculation based on the number found in a systematic survey of a portion of the planet. MRO’s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera took pictures of the fresh craters at sites where before-and-after images by other cameras bracketed when the impacts occurred. This combination provided a new way to make direct measurements of the impact rate on Mars. This will lead to better age estimates of recent features on Mars, some of which may have been the result of climate change, according to Nasa.

Meteoroid Impact Triggers Bright Flash On The Moon

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (TIP): An automated telescope monitoring the moon has captured images of an 88- pound (40 kg) rock slamming into the lunar surface, creating a bright flash of light, NASA scientists said. The explosion on March 17 was the biggest seen since NASA began watching the moon for meteoroid impacts about eight years ago. So far, more than 300 strikes have been recorded. “It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we’ve ever seen before,” Bill Cooke, with NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, said in a statement.

A NASA satellite orbiting the moon is now on a hunt for the newly formed crater, which scientists estimate could be as wide as 66 feet (20 meters). The flash was so bright that anyone looking at the moon at the moment of impact could have seen it without a telescope, NASA said. After reviewing digital recordings made by one of the program’s telescopes, scientists determined the space rock was about 1 foot (0.3 meters) in diameter, and traveling about 56,000 mph (90,123 kph) when it slammed into the moon and exploded with the force of five tons of TNT. That same night, cameras detected an unusually high number of meteors blasting through Earth’s atmosphere as well.

Most meteors burn up well before reaching the ground. But not always. In February, an asteroid estimated to be about 66 feet (20 meters) in diameter exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, damaging buildings and shattering glass, leaving more than 1,500 injured. It was the largest object to strike Earth since 1908. “The Russian fireball was many orders of magnitude larger and possessed 100,000 times more energy,” than the lunar impact, Cooke wrote in an email to Reuters. He believes the lunar impact and the March 17 meteor shower on Earth are related, the result of both bodies traveling together through a region of space sprinkled with small rocks and dust. “We’ll be keeping an eye out for signs of a repeat performance next year when the Earth-moon system passes through the same region of space,” Cooke said.

Found: 2.7 Bn-Yr-Old Pockets Of Water

LONDON (TIP): Scientists have discovered ancient pockets of water — dating back to at least 2.7 billion years — which contain abundant chemicals that are known to support life, lurking deep underground in Canada. This water could be some of the oldest on the planet and may even contain life. Also, the similarity between the rocks that trapped it and those on Mars raises the hope that comparable lifesustaining water could lie buried beneath the red planet’s surface, scientists believe. Researchers from the universities of Manchester, Lancaster, Toronto and McMaster analysed water pouring out of boreholes from a mine 2.4 km beneath Ontario. They found that the water was rich in dissolved gases, such as, hydrogen, methane and different forms — called isotopes — of noble gases such as helium, neon, argon and xenon. The hydrogen and methane come from the interaction between the rock and water, as well as natural radioactive elements in the rock reacting with the water. These gases could provide energy for microbes that may not have been exposed to the sun for billions of years. The crystalline rocks surrounding the water are thought to be around 2.7 billion years old. Using ground-breaking techniques developed at the University of Manchester, the researchers show that the fluid is at least 1.5 billion years old, but could be significantly older. “We’ve found an interconnected fluid system in the deep Canadian crystalline basement that is billions of years old, and capable of supporting life,” said professor Chris Ballentine of the University of Manchester, co-author of the study, and project director. “Our finding is of huge interest to researchers who want to understand how microbes evolve in isolation, and is central to the whole question of the origin of life, the sustainability of life, and life on other planets,” Ballentine said.

  • Now, Robot Bartender To Serve Cocktails

Now, Robot Bartender To Serve Cocktails

LONDON (TIP): Scientists have developed a robot that can act as the perfect bartender – from shaking a martini to slicing a lemon. Makr Shakr consists of three robotic arms which mimic the actions of a bartender. The robots are linked to an app which allows users to create their own cocktails from scratch, BBC News reported. “Makr Shakr is a great example of how digital technologies are changing the interaction between people and products,” said Carlo Ratti, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Senseable City Lab, which directed the project. “The system explores the new dynamics of social creation and consumption – ‘design, make and enjoy’ – allowing users to design their own cocktail creations, while digitally controlled machines transform these designs into reality,” Ratti said. The team behind the project hope to create a “bottom-up bar culture”, allowing users to learn from each other by sharing drink recipes and photos.

The robots’ movements have been modelled on the gestures of Roberto Bolle, a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. Makr Shakr will be serving cocktails to delegates at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco this week.
