  • Thor: The Dark World

    Thor: The Dark World

STORY: Earth, Asgard and the universe are threatened with destruction by Malekith and the Dark Elves. When the Nine Realms converge and the Elves get their hands on the Aether, they’ll achieve their objective. Will our heroes stop them? REVIEW: Thor and his Viking gang get another big screen outing in a movie that ticks all the right superhero checkboxes. A quick prologue tells the story of how Malekith (Eccleston), Algrim (Adewale) and the Elves were defeated ages ago by Odin’s (Hopkins) father, Bor. Back then, Malekith was after the Aether, a protoplasm-like substance that has the power to return the universe to a primordial state. In the present day, when the Aether is released again on Earth, some of it enters Jane Foster’s (Portman) blood as it requires a host. This also gives Thor (Hemsworth) a great reason to go visit the Aether-host, Foster. The Aether’s reactivation awakens Malekith and the Elves from suspended animation and they once again set about on their malevolent mission of intergalactic annihilation, starting with Asgard. Odin tells Thor that an alignment of the Nine Realms, coupled with the Aether landing in the hands of the Elves, can spell disaster.

Thor soon realizes he needs Loki’s (Hiddleston) help. Loki, at his snarling, menacing best, is a far more potent threat this time around. In fact, if you want something beyond stud-god Thor’s alpha-male heroism, you will find Loki to be the only character with different shades. The effects are amazing but the best moments are when Thor and Loki share screen space. Loki has the power to make you empathize with him, but is that just another one of his deceptive tricks? Thor, Loki and whole Norse mythos is as complex as any school of mythology that was formed eons ago in days of old, when magic filled the air. This movie is also about sibling rivalry as well as a longdistance love story with an intergalactic twist. Don’t miss this one.

SUNNY LEONE SIZZLES IN A SAREE

Adult star-turned- Bollywood actress Sunny Leone who is awaiting the release of her next flick ‘Jackpot’ which also has southern actor Bharath making his Bollywood debut was seen sizzling in a sexy saree recently. The saree was designed by Hitendra Kapopara and the sexy actress upped her oomph factor with the attire. ‘ Jackpot’, which is directed by Kaizad Gustad, will be released on December 13. Another interesting thing about this movie is the fact that Sunny Leone will be mouthing dialogues on her own, without any aid from a dubbing artist. This is the first time that she will be mastering Hindi and speaking her own dialogues.

  • Satya 2

    Satya 2

STORY: A new don is born and he vows to reinvent the bloody ‘Bang-Bang’ business of the underworld. REVIEW: If you like your ‘truth’ bloodied, here it goes. This time RGV’s newly packaged don is of a different breed, but barely matches the ballsy bhaigiri of the original. Cut back fifteen years – when Ramu on creative Viagra, ripped open Mumbai’s ominous crime diaries for cinematic consumption. Tossing us into a dark, sinister world of lawless bhais, bhaus, gangstas and guns. Ever since, he’s flaunted his obsession for the inglorious D’s and their doomed destinies. Meet Satya No.2 (Puneet), donning crisp corporate casuals, rimless glasses and an attitude to match that (too blah for a budding bhai!). Hustling on, Satya takes on the challenge to undo failed formulas of past infamous dons, to create a new blueprint for the bhais in business. How? He forms a company called ‘Company’ (really!) and launches an invincible, intangible product called Darr.

He even finds executioners to market this hot-seller, and soon ‘Company’ turns into the deadliest crime outfit – topping the cops’ radar. Meanwhile, he weds lady-love, Chitra (Anaika) who spends more time sitting pretty and pouting, than performing. Debutant Puneet, as an intense, brooding don, puts in effort, but it appears like a gunshot and disappears quickly. His hushed huskiness is ineffective, and he’s unable to evoke any feeling of fear or fatality. He has promise, but has yet to realize it. ‘Satya 2’ (unlinked sequel), thrives on randomness and implausible ideas. This don is unconvincing, seeking no wrath or sympathy of the viewers. The supporting cast is too weak, and the unforgettable bhaichara, the potbellied Kallu maamas and boisterous Bhikus (of Satya fame) are sorely missed. RGV relies on his trademark camera angles, close-ups and deafening ‘Satya’ chants (background score) to heighten drama, but guns down the plot at the onset. Even a good hangover of the remarkable prequel might have salvaged this one. The film reiterates, “Company ek ‘soch’ hai.” We wish RGV had put in some soch into this. Truth be told, iss film ko goli maaro, and for the sake of nostalgia, watch the original, for posterity.

  • MORE ASTEROID STRIKES ARE LIKELY: SCIENTISTS

MORE ASTEROID STRIKES ARE LIKELY: SCIENTISTS

When an asteroid exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in February, shattering windows for miles and injuring well over 1,000 people, experts said it was a rare event — of a magnitude that might occur only once every 100 to 200 years, on average. But now a team of scientists is suggesting that the Earth is vulnerable to many more Chelyabinsk-size space rocks than was previously thought. In research being published on Wednesday by the journal Nature, they estimate that such strikes could occur as often as every decade or two. The prospect “really makes a lot of people uncomfortable,” said Peter G Brown, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Western Ontario and an author of the two studies in Nature. A third paper by other scientists describing the Chelyabinsk explosion was published online this week by the journal Science. The findings are helping to elevate the topic of planetary defense — identifying dangerous asteroids and deflecting them if necessary — from Hollywood fantasy to real-world concern.

A United Nations committee has been studying the issue for some time, and next month the General Assembly is expected to adopt two of its recommendations: establishing an International Asteroid Warning Network for countries to share information; and calling on the world’s space agencies to set up an advisory group to explore technologies for deflecting an asteroid. Sky surveys have spotted about 95 per cent of the big near-Earth asteroids, those that are at least one kilometer wide, or 0.6 miles, and none are in danger of hitting Earth anytime soon. But those are not the only ones to worry about. “One kilometer is more than just dangerous,” said Edward T. Lu, a former NASA space shuttle astronaut who heads the B612 Foundation, a private effort to launch a space telescope that could find smaller asteroids. “One kilometer is end-ofhuman- civilization kind of dangerous.” The Chelyabinsk asteroid was just 60 feet wide. Speeding around 40,000 miles per hour, it released energy equal to 500,000 tons of TNT. A larger asteroid, perhaps two or three times the diameter of the Chelyabinsk one, exploded over Siberia in 1908 and is estimated to have released energy equivalent to 5 million to 15 million tons of TNT, flattening millions of trees.

The proposed B612 telescope, to be called Sentinel, is intended to find asteroids about 450 feet wide, although it will also find many that are smaller. Dr Lu said the mission would cost $450 million — $250 million to build the spacecraft and $200 million to operate it for a decade. A 450-foot-wide asteroid, Dr Lu said, would be equivalent to 150 million tons of TNT. “You’re not going to wipe out humanity,” he said, “but if you get unlucky, you could kill 50 million people or you could collapse the world economy for a century, two centuries.” Dr Lu said astronomers had found only 10 to 20 per cent of the near-Earth asteroids of that size. Sentinel would also spot many smaller ones that could still be devastating. “What we’ve been talking about are the ones that would only destroy a major metropolitan area — all of New York City and the surrounding area,” Dr Lu said. He said only about 0.5 per cent of these smaller asteroids, roughly the size of the 1908 one, have been found. Because telescope surveys have counted so few of the small asteroids, Dr Brown and his colleagues instead investigated what has actually hit the Earth. In one of the articles in Nature, they examined United States Air Force data from the 1960s and 1970s and later data from sensors verifying a ban on aboveground nuclear weapons testing.

The recordings captured the lowfrequency atmospheric rumblings generated by about 60 asteroid explosions. Most came from small asteroids, but their data suggested that the somewhat larger ones hit more frequently than would be expected based on the estimates from sky surveys. That could mean the Earth has been unlucky recently, or that the estimates on the number of Chelyabinsk-size asteroids are too low. “Any one of them individually I think you could dismiss,” Dr Brown said, “but when you take it all together, I think the preponderance of the evidence is there is a much higher number of these tens-of-meters-size objects.” Dr Lu said that was one more reason to launch an asteroid-finding telescope. “There are hints the rate is higher than we think, but we don’t really know yet, and I think we should find out,” he said. “When you find out how many there are, you also find out where the individual ones are. Everything you discover you can either rule out as going to hit us or you say, ‘Hey, we ought to look at this one more carefully.’” Many of the Chelyabinsk-size asteroids would elude detection by Sentinel. Still, the residents of Chelyabinsk would have benefited from a warning on the morning of Feb. 15 to stay away from the window. With a $5 million grant from NASA, University of Hawaii astronomers are setting up telescopes to scan the sky for quickmoving spots of light that could be oncoming asteroids. There would be no opportunity to deflect the asteroid that would hit in days or weeks, but it would give time to warn, and to evacuate. That system is scheduled to go into operation in 2015.

  • NEW MICROBE FOUND INSIDE NASA’S SPACECRAFT PREP ROOM

NEW MICROBE FOUND INSIDE NASA’S SPACECRAFT PREP ROOM

NEW DELHI (TIP): Nasa scientists have discovered a strange new microbe living in one of the cleanest rooms in the world: the room where spacecraft are prepared for final launch. The new berry-shaped bug can survive on very little to eat, Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Lab said. It has been found in two places on Earth: spacecraft clean rooms in a Nasa facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and a European Space Agency facility in Kourou, French Guiana in South America. Spacecraft clean rooms need to be kept absolutely clean to prevent any bugs hitching a ride on the spacecraft. Fewer microbes live there than in almost any other environment on Earth. But those which do survive in such a place are really hardy. Not only do they survive drying, chemical cleaning, ultraviolet treatments and lack of nutrients, they often also show elevated resistance to spacecraft sterilization methodologies such as heating and peroxide treatment. So, scientists working in these clean rooms take regular counts of microbes inside and keep a tally. If extraterrestrial life is ever found, it would be readily checked against the census of a few hundred types of microbes detected in spacecraft clean rooms.

“We want to have a better understanding of these bugs, because the capabilities that adapt them for surviving in clean rooms might also let them survive on a spacecraft,” said microbiologist Parag Vaishampayan of Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, lead author of the 2013 paper about the microbe. “This particular bug survives with almost no nutrients.” The newly discovered bacteria is so different from any other known bacteria, it has been classified as not only a new species, but also a new genus, the next level of classifying the diversity of life. Its discoverers named it Tersicoccus phoenicis. Tersi is from Latin for clean, like the room. Coccus, from Greek for berry, describes the bacterium’s shape. The phoenicis part is for Nasa’s Phoenix Mars Lander, the spacecraft being prepared for launch in 2007 when the bacterium was first collected by test-swabbing the floor in the Florida clean room. A bacterial DNA database shared by microbiologists worldwide led Vaishampayan to find the match. The South American detection had been listed on the database by a former JPL colleague, Christine Moissl- Eichinger, now with the University of Regensburg in Germany. She is first co-author of the paper published this year in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology identifying the new genus.

The same global database showed no other location where this strain of bacteria has been detected. That did not surprise Vaishampayan. He said, “We find a lot of bugs in clean rooms because we are looking so hard to find them there. The same bug might be in the soil outside the clean room but we wouldn’t necessarily identify it there because it would be hidden by the overwhelming numbers of other bugs.” A teaspoon of typical soil would have thousands more types of microbes and billions more total microbes than an entire cleanroom. More than 99% of bacterial strains, as identified from DNA sequences, have never been cultivated in laboratories, a necessary step for the various types of characterization required to identify a strain as a new species. Microbes that are tolerant of harsh conditions become more evident in clean room environments that remove the rest of the crowd. “Tersicoccus phoenicis might be found in some natural environment with extremely low nutrient levels, such as a cave or desert,” Vaishampayan speculated. This is the case for another species of bacterium (Paenibacillus phoenicis) identified by JPL researchers and currently found in only two places on Earth: a spacecraft clean room in Florida and a bore hole more than 1.3 miles (2.1 kilometers) deep at a Colorado molybdenum mine.

  • SAHARA TO SELL ICONIC LONDON AND NEW YORK HOTELS

SAHARA TO SELL ICONIC LONDON AND NEW YORK HOTELS

MUMBAI (TIP): The embattled Sahara Group has put up for sale the iconic luxury hotels it acquired over the last three years — The Plaza and Dream Downtown in New York and London’s Grosvenor House — with an Arab business family said to have made a £1-billion offer for all of them, according to three people close to the development. The family based in the Middle-East has extensive interests in hospitality and has offered a little over Rs 10,000 crore for the three trophy properties in the “Sahara portfolio” of Aamby Valley Mauritius, said the people cited above. If the deal goes through, Sahara stands to get about Rs 4,000 crore, or almost three times what it invested in the hotels, after repaying its debt to Bank of China of close to $1 billion against the properties. Dealmakers in Europe told ET Sahara would be the only business group globally to have earned that kind of return on investment in hospitality since the 2008 financial crisis.

Subrata Roy, founder and head of Sahara Group, has been in talks with royal and business families in the Middle-East and Europe to sell the hotels for more than two months now, said the people cited above. The UK’s Halkin Investments, which has former Pakistan prime minister Shaukat Aziz on its board, is one of the key advisers to Sahara Group’s Aamby Valley Mauritius. Sahara Group did not respond to emails. Halkin Investment said it “acts for Aamby Valley Mauritius in an occasional and advisory-only capacity”. It did not answer other queries in the email. Sahara needs to repay holders of debentures that the capital market regulator said were sold in violation of rules. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) was backed by the Supreme Court, which asked Sahara to refund the money. Sahara has said it has repaid much of the amount, but the regulator disagrees. The 494-room Grosvenor House, once home to the Duke of Westminster, was purchased by Sahara in 2010 from Royal Bank of Scotland for £470 million, or $726 million.

  • GOVT TO SET UP JOINT TASK FORCE TO DEVELOP SERVICES SECTOR

GOVT TO SET UP JOINT TASK FORCE TO DEVELOP SERVICES SECTOR

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Government will set up a joint task force for the services sector together with the industry to prepare an action plan for the development of the sector and increase services exports, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma. Agreeing to the industry’s suggestion of setting up a National Services Competitive Council on the lines of National Manufacturing Competitive Council, Sharma said “We have to have a forum to address the varied needs of the sector and to identify training and other needs of each vertical.” He was speaking at the ‘Services Conclave’ jointly organised by CII and the Centre for WTO Studies. The two-day conclave focuses on ways to boost the domestic services industry and increase India’s share in the $4-trillion global services trade from the present 3 per cent.

The Minister said the services sector exports, by and large, were from verticals such as IT, ITES and BPO sectors. There was a lot of scope to diversify in segments such as animation, media and entertainment, legal servicing, architecture, healthcare, tourism and medical tourism. Sharma asked industry representatives to come forward and help the Government, to take up at various international forums the need for more liberal movement of skilled persons under Mode 4 of World Trade Organisation rules. Often movement of skilled persons is confused with immigration, though such movements are temporary in nature, he said The Minister also asked the industry to explore new markets such as Africa to boost India’s export of services. “Even for services sector we need to look at other major markets. We have a strong presence in North America. Regions such as Africa have huge opportunities and there you can be more cost competitive,” he said.

Knorr-Bremse sets up truck braking systems plant in Pune

Pune (TIP): German manufacturer Knorr-Bremse has set up a new plant in Pune to make complete braking systems for trucks. It has also established a technology centre for engineering design in the city. Set up with an investment of 14 million, the facility will address the needs of the domestic market as well as serve as the leading plant worldwide for automatic slack adjusters, said Klaus Deller, a board member at Knorr Bremse. Deller is responsible for the commercial vehicle business globally. The greenfield plant can build braking systems for 80,000 trucks per year, and production is scalable, Deller said. Referring to the current slowdown in the Indian CV segment, he added: “We don’t care exactly when the demand will pick up, but we know it will pick up. And when it does, we will be there.” India, at present, accounts for 2 per cent of the company’s global revenue. The target is to double this in the next three years, Deller said. Knorr-Bremse’s Technical Centre India will have over 200 engineers working on global development projects for both truck and rail systems. The building also houses a software centre for the company’s rail division. The German company’s entry into the Indian CV component market was via a joint venture with Tata Auto Components (TACO). The alliance was broken around five years ago with the former buying out TACO’s stake. Following this, it has set up its own expanded manufacturing facility. Later this week, Knorr-Bremse is set to open its greenfield plant for railway systems in Faridabad.

  • THE UNIQUE SIKH DINING TRADITION OF LANGAR

THE UNIQUE SIKH DINING TRADITION OF LANGAR

When the first Sikh guru, Nanak Dev, attained manhood, his father gave him 20 rupees and sent him on a trading expedition, impressing upon him that a good bargain makes for a good profit. On his way to buy merchandise, he met a group of sadhus living in a jungle. Nanak noticed the emaciated condition of the naked holy men and decided that the most profitable transaction he could make with his father’s money would be to feed and clothe them. When he returned home empty handed, his father punished him. Insisting that true profit is to be had in selfless service, Guru Nanak established the principal of langar.

    img28

    Tradition of Langar:
Where ever the gurus traveled or held court, people gathered for divine discourse. Mata Khivi, wife ofAngad Dev, the second guru, made sure to provide langar, and participated in the service of distribution. Communal contributions and combined efforts of the people helped to organize the guru’s free kitchen based on the principals of:

  • WHAT HUMANITY OWES GURU NANAK

    WHAT HUMANITY OWES GURU NANAK

When Guru Nanak came to this world in the 15th century, many paths to enlightenment were devoid of divinity. They were mostly distorted towards unholy goals of exploiters of people. Religious practices were concocted routinely and thrust on people by mutually supportive interests that had designed to conceal tricks to fool innocent people. The religious institutions used beauty shows in religious practices that were intended to attract innocent minds. They invented deities, stories, idols, recitations, and rituals that supported each other. They asked people to erect stunning buildings to house God and promised accessibility to Gods at precise time and places through expense of wealth, time, and intellect. Altruism was perverted so that it only benefited clerics, clergy, and their masters Many other tricks were implemented to speed institutional agenda. Miracles were invented to convert human behaviors. The religious myths were invented to answer real questions and then safe-guarded their myths by un-testable threats and promises. Religious institutions of the time built cults of external marks and wrappings to encourage murders and wars against those who did not tow the line or who were members of competing religions.

They asked to invest massive amount of money, time, and energy in ritualistic illusions. They were sold on beliefs such as, converting others or serving clergy would guarantee heavens no one has ever seen. Above all, horrific fear were employed to ensure compliance. Guru Nanak came out of the famous Veeni River meditation with fervent zeal to spread what he said was inspiration from Almighty. He then taught that human life was a result of the millions of years’ history and experience from numerous life cycles of birth and death. This history manifested in human mind and body as the primitive and corrupted instincts all inherited from plant and animal life. Upon birth into the human form they were reinforced by illusions created by selfserving materialistic cultures on one hand and the clergy promoting ethnic religiosity on the other. Thus, mislead human life endured pains and sufferings, but at the same time experienced longing for salvation. Guru Nanak taught that suffering comes from enslavement of five inner evils.

Conquering over those evils with the sword of knowledge and seeking of enlightenment with contemplation of Divine brings freedom from suffering, and will lead to achievement of the timeless bliss. Guru Nanak claimed that there was no religion that God would patronize. Each disciple of spirituality may seek guidance from the Guru and work out his/her own practice to calm down the mind and insure suitable paths of salvation. Guru Nanak preached the institution of spirituality in earthly practices, all leading to a life of sharing the possessions with others, being thankful, and seeking the Divinity in life practices. He felicitated experience of Divinity at every moment and in every act. His teachings inculcated cleansing acts to purify the heart. In Guru Nanak’s religion, the company of enlightened minds in the service of humanity will facilitate the journey to salvation. No deities, mythical stories, hidden powers, or other beauty tricks of organized religions would be desired for spiritual attainments.

  • GURU NANAK’S TEACHINGS AND THEIR RELEVANCE TO MODERN WORLD

GURU NANAK’S TEACHINGS AND THEIR RELEVANCE TO MODERN WORLD

The Sikhs across the world would be joined by Hindus, Muslims and others in celebrating the 545th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak, the fountainhead of Sikhism, Sunday, November 17. The tradition of celebrating the anniversary of the Gurus or the spiritual teachers is called Gurpurb (celebration of the teacher). There are ten Gurus in Sikh faith and their holy book is called the Guru Granth Sahib. Granth Sahib is a compilation of entire teachings of the Gurus and a few saints and remains a perpetual guidance for the Sikhs. As a pluralist who has done over 25 hours of Radio Talk shows and two workshops on Sikhism as a part of “Understanding the wisdom of Religion, all the beautiful religions” my goal was to share the essence of each faith and their relevance to the common man on the street who is not related to that particular religion. Let me begin with the recognition of how Guru Nanak’s teaching has produced an exemplary model of dealing with conflicts today. On August 5, 2012, a gunman Wade Michael Page walked into the SikhTemple in Oak CreekWisconsin, and opened the fire killing 6 people causing tremendous panic and apprehension. This is an accumulation of many smaller incidents beginning with the murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a gas station owner in Phoenix, Arizona, and many incidents later, the humiliation of Dr. Prabhjot Singh, a Sikh Professor in New York and harassment of Mr. Jagjeet Singh, a truck driver by a Judge in Mississippi. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mikeghouse/ harassment-of-sikhs-inne_ b_3997899.html How did the Sikhs respond to the harassment and the violence?

They followed the teachings of Guru Nanak by responding to the Wisconsin massacre with forgiveness, patience, forbearance, and kindness, it was the right thing to do when tragedy befalls a community. They set a new benchmark in America. Instead of expressing anger, threatening to sue the authorities, or demonstrating their apprehensions, the Sikhs across America chose the most powerful tools of all: Prayer and forgiveness. Indeed it resonates with the teachings of Jesus, Prophet Muhammad and other great masters, and recently Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March and Martin Luther King’s march in Selma. It disarms the oppressor and the message of goodness gets conveyed. Every Gurdwara in America held candle light vigils and speeches focused on forgiveness and goodwill – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNxrf8fFU0 I The selfless service to mankind known as Seva is central to the teaching of Sikhism. There is no thought of reward or gains, it pure service to fellow beings. The Sikh community must be appreciated by one and all, and were indeed appreciated at the Unity Day USA for setting the standards of dealing with conflicts. Indeed, it is our duty to “honor and cherish individuals “who have dedicated their lives to building bridges among Americans. Their pioneering spirit in facilitating communities to know each other and to respect each other is appreciated by the people of Dallas/ Fort Worth. On this day, we appreciate and celebrate their contributions towards building a cohesive America, where no one has to live in apprehension, discomfort or fear of the other. Guru Nanakji’s birthday has a special significance to me, indeed, the religion we called Sikhism today, started out as an interfaith movement, where Guru Nanak primarily brought people from different religions together and taught common sense goodness, and serving humanity and caring for the neighbors.

Today, I wrote my weekly piece at Dallas Morning News on Pluralism, I was asked what verse from Quran I would recommend to those who serve in public office. The verse I recommend reminded me of the Sikh Brother, Bhai Kanhaiya’s story from the battle of Anandpur Sahib in 1704. Quran, 5:8 (Asad translation): “O YOU who have attained to faith! Be ever steadfast in your devotion to God, bearing witness to the truth in all equity; and never let hatred of any-one lead you into the sin of deviating from justice. Be just: this is closest to being God-conscious. And remain conscious of God: verily, God is aware of all that you do.” Indeed, the word hatred has multiple meanings in this case – bias to color, race, appearance, deport and other temperamental proclivities that are destructive to everyone. Indeed Bhai Kanhaiya took it further to include enemy soldiers. Martin Luther King Jr., said, “Injustice to one is injustice to all” – thank you Bhai Kanhaiya for setting the new standard of inclusion and caring. Here is a dialogue between Bhai Kanhaiya and Guru Gobind Singh; the 10th Guru of Sikhism who put the final touches to the religion, this story is narrated by many sources including Wikipedia. Guru Gobind Singh summoned Bhai Kanhaiya and explained that he had received a complaint about his actions on the battlefield.

Guruji, “These brave Sikhs are saying that you go and feed water to the enemy and they recover to fight them again – Is this true?” Bhai Kanhaiya, “Yes,my Guru, what they say is true. But Maharaj, I saw no Mughal or Sikh on the battlefield. I only saw human beings. And, Guru Ji, they all have the same God’s Spirit? – Guru Ji, have you not taught us to treat all God’s people as the same?” Guru Ji said, “Bhai Kanhaiya Ji, You are right. You have understood the true message of Gurbani (compositions of Sikh Gurus) “. He then continued and told the Sikhs that Bhai Kanhaiya had understood the deeper message of the Gurus’ teachings correctly and that they all have to strive to learn lessons from the priceless words of Gurbani. Guru also gave Bhai Kanhaiya Ji medical Balm and said “From now on, you should also put this balm on the wounds of all who need it”‘ Then turning to the sangat Guru Ji said, Saadh sangat Ji, Bhai Kanhaiya is a Godfearing saintly soul. His impartial and nonbiased behavior towards others has led him to achieve Sehaj-avastha. Let him carry on with his mission. Many more will follow in his footsteps in the years to come and keep the tradition of Nishkam Sewa alive.”

Guruji was committed to peace and harmony
I hope on this auspicious occasion of Gurpurb, the Sikhs can make a genuine effort to pay tribute to the spirit of Guru Nanak Devji and remove the misunderstandings that erupted from a wrong translation of Quran that happened 350 years ago during the reign of Aurangzeb, and has rightfully etched in the psyche of Sikhs. In an article in Huffington Post about Kentucky Senator David William’s bigotry I wrote, “No one has a right to belittle other’s faiths. If Senator Williams has a problem let it be his problem and no one should malign Christianity for his bigotry.” Likewise, King Aurangzeb’s bigotry should not be slapped on to Muslims. I have nothing to do with it, nor does any Muslim today has anything to do with him. One single mistranslation of a verse from Quran has created a great misunderstanding between Muslims and Sikhs since the times of Aurangzeb, and has lasted till this day. Sadly there was a lot of bloodshed during the partition of India that has deepened the ill-will among a few Muslims and a few Sikhs. It is time to forgive for our own sake, as it will release the tension and apprehension within us and deal with each other as free individuals. I was a speaker on “reading the scriptures” at the Parliament of world’s religions in Melbourne, Australia and discovered this longest running ill-will between Sikhs and Muslims with Dr. Avatar Dhaliwal of Tennessee.

I hope, to honor Guru Nanak, we can put this behind through a serious dialogue. I am willing to invest my time for the sake of common good and peace between people of different faiths. We cannot have walls between us by the men who are no more. Sikhism was one of the first formal religions that began as a reconciliatory goodwill nurturing faith and let’s give the full value to it and work together. May the Noor (divine light) of Guru Nanankji brighten the world today and for eternity. Amen! The DFW Sikh Community invites you, our friends, neighbors and all members of the community, to join us in the celebration of the 544th coming of the founder of the Sikh Faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. His ideals of peace, harmony, egalitarianism, social justice, living in the presence of the One Creator and with dignity and honesty are the fundamentals we strive for everyday. This celebration will include the 1st parade in the City of Richardson. When: Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 10:00 AM – 2 PM. Where: Gurdwara Singh Sabha of North Texas in Richardson. Langar will be served. This is the Sikh institution of the community kitchen and as with any and all Sikh events it will include a complimentary vegetarian meal, sweets, refreshments and drinks.

WASHINGTON (TIP): US President Barack Obama has thanked London-based Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal for investing in America and creating jobs in the country. “I want to thank your CEO, Lakshmi Mittal, for investing in America and the Cleveland area,” Obama said during his visit to the ArcelorMittal Cleveland Steel Factory in Cleveland, Ohio on November 14. This year alone, the company has invested $70 million resulting in creation of 150 new jobs, Mittal said. “It’s a great honor for all of us at ArcelorMittal Cleveland to welcome President Obama here today. We’ve been making steel in Cleveland for one hundred years,” Mittal said in his welcome address. “The link between Cleveland’s success and our investment in advanced high strength steel has been very important to our success,” he said.

WASHINGTON (TIP): The Food and Drug Administration, November 7, took a step toward potentially eliminating trans fats from the food supply with a preliminary determination they are no longer “generally recognized as safe.” Trans fats are found in a variety of frozen, canned and baked processed foods. Partially hydrogenated oils are the major dietary source of trans fats in processed food. Trans fats have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. If the preliminary determination is finalized, according to the FDA, then partially hydrogenated oils will become food additives subject to premarket FDA approval. Foods with unapproved additives cannot legally be sold.

NSA chief says Snowden leaked up to 2,00,000 secret documents

WASHINGTON (TIP): Former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden leaked as many as 200,000 classified US documents to the media, according to little-noticed public remarks by the eavesdropping agency’s chief late last month. In a question-and-answer session following a speech to a foreign affairs group in Baltimore on October 31, NSA director general Keith Alexander was asked by a member of the audience what steps US authorities were taking to stop Snowden from leaking additional information to journalists. “I wish there was a way to prevent it. Snowden has shared somewhere between 50 (thousand) and 200,000 documents with reporters. These will continue to come out,” Alexander said. Alexander added that the documents were “being put out in a way that does the maximum damage to NSA and our nation,” according to a transcript of his talk made available by NSA. US officials briefed on investigations into Snowden’s activities have said privately for months that internal government assessments indicate that the number of classified documents to which Snowden got access as a systems operator at NSA installations ran into the hundreds of thousands.

Officials said that while investigators now believe they know the range of documents that Snowden accessed, they remain unsure which documents he downloaded for leaking to the media. By comparison, the number of Pentagon and State Department documents leaked to WikiLeaks by a disgruntled US Army private was much larger. The antisecrecy group obtained around 400,000 Pentagon reports on the Iraq war, as well as 250,000 State Department cables and tens of thousands of documents on US operations in Afghanistan. None of the WikiLeaks material was classified higher than “Secret” but many NSA documents leaked by Snowden were marked “Top Secret” or with an even more restrictive “Special Intelligence” stamp. The material includes highly technical details on US and allied eavesdropping activities. Snowden’s revelations, which first surfaced in June, are still causing a headache for the government of President Barack Obama, particularly in its dealing with allies. For example, Germany was outraged by reports that the NSA monitored Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cellphone. Matthew Olsen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, said Snowden’s leaks were “extremely damaging.” “There is no doubt that those disclosures have made our job harder. We’ve seen that terrorists or adversaries are seeking to learn about the ways that we collect intelligence and seeking to adapt and change the ways that they communicate,” he told a congressional hearing on November 14. In the past few days, US officials say, a panel of former officials and experts set up by Obama to review NSA operations in the wake of Snowden’s disclosures has privately reported interim conclusions to the White House. The group’s final report is due on December 15.

  • Obama’s popularity at all-time low: Survey

Obama’s popularity at all-time low: Survey

WASHINGTON (TIP): US President Barack Obama’s popularity has slumped to an all-time low, with a majority of Americans for the first time believing him to be dishonest and untrustworthy, a new survey showed. The respected Quinnipiac University Poll found that Obama’s approval rating had nosedived to the level of unpopularity faced by Republican predecessor George W. Bush at the same stage of his presidency. Overall, the poll said 54 percent disapproved of the job Obama was doing against 39 percent who approved. The findings mark a significant downturn from an October 1 survey which put Obama’s disapproval rating at 49 percent to 45 percent approval. It caps a turbulent few weeks for Obama, whose administration has come under heavy fire for the chaotic roll-out of his signature health care legislation, the Affordable Care Act. American voters had also reacted strongly against Obama’s misstated pledge to allow voters to keep the health care plans they already had, the survey revealed. “Like all new presidents, President Barack Obama had a honeymoon with American voters, with approval ratings in the high 50s,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“As the marriage wore on, he kept his job approval scores in the respectable, though not overwhelming 40s. Today for the first time it appears that 40 percent floor is cracking.” Malloy said the plunging approval amongst women voters was also a concern for Obama. Only 41 percent of women approved of the job he was doing against 51 percent who disapproved. The survey indicated that most Americans remain deeply pessimistic about the effect the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare” as it has become known, will have on their health care choices. Only 19 percent of voters expect the quality of care to improve in the next year as a result of the legislation, 43 percent expect it to get worse and 33 percent say it will make no difference. Obama’s image had also taken a battering after he said people could keep their existing health insurance plans if they wished. “President Obama’s misstatement, ‘If you like your health plan you can keep it,’ left a bad taste with a lot of people,” Malloy said. “Nearly half of the voters, 46 percent, think he knowingly deceived them.” The poll was conducted amongst 2,545 registered voters nationwide between November 6-11, with a margin of error of plus-minus 1.9 percentage points.

Hawaii set to legalize same-sex marriages

HONOLULU (TIP): The Hawaii Senate gave final legislative approval on November 12 to a bill extending marriage rights to same-sex couples in a state popular as a wedding and honeymoon destination and regarded as a pioneer in advancing the cause of gay matrimony. The measure cleared the Democraticcontrolled state Senate on a 19-4 vote to cheers and applause from hundreds of supporters in flowered garland leis who filled the visitor galleries and the Capitol rotunda. Hundreds more danced for joy on the sidewalks in front of the Capitol building. Governor Neil Abercrombie, a Democrat who called a special session to consider the bill, is expected to sign it into law on Wednesday, an aide to the governor said. That would make Hawaii the 15th US state to legalize gay marriage. The measure, set to take effect on December 2, rolls back a 1994 statute defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. President Barack Obama, who was born in Hawaii, hailed passage of the bill. He is the first US president to support gay marriage.

  • Low Obamacare enrolment figures turns up heat on White House

Low Obamacare enrolment figures turns up heat on White House

WASHINGTON (TIP): About 106,000 people signed up for insurance coverage nationally under President Barack Obama’s healthcare law during October, the government said on Wednesday, a tiny fraction of the millions of people that had been expected to enroll for next year. The Obama administration had signaled enrollment would be very low in October because of technical failures that have hobbled the HealthCare.gov website used for signing people up in 36 states. But the reported figures show how far the White House has to go to build a new individual market of millions of consumers in 2014 to keep the healthcare program financially viable. The enrollment in private plans amounts to 1.5 percent of a forecast 7 million people who were expected to sign up by the time enrollment wraps up in the end of March. Nearly 1 million people have successfully checked whether they are eligible for government subsidies toward the new insurance, but have not selected a plan, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. The release of the low enrollment numbers for the first month coincided with Obama’s fellow Democrats in the US House of Representatives demanding that the White House swiftly help people whose existing insurance policies are being canceled and to fix the broken website by the end of the month. The sign-up figures reflect people who have picked a new insurance plan but may not have paid their premiums yet.

Some 26,794 people signed up for private health insurance plans through the technologically-challenged federal marketplace and 79,391 who signed up through state-based exchanges. The figures showed 396,261 people were deemed eligible for the government’s Medicaid program or the Children’s Health Insurance Program for the poor. House Democrats, seething over the problems, met with administration officials for more than an hour on Wednesday, angry that the botched rollout could become a major political liability for the party during the 2014 mid-term elections. A senior House Democratic aide said lawmakers called for Obama to announce a remedy to the canceled policies before a vote on Friday on a Republican bill allowing people to keep their current health insurance plans if they like them. House Democratic leaders have urged their members to vote against it, saying it is merely another attempt to repeal the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Obama’s biggest domestic policy achievement, commonly known as Obamacare. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters he had a long conversation with Obama on Tuesday night.

Can’t give more powers to CBI, Centre tells SC

NEW DELHI (TIP): November 13 The Centre today informed the Supreme Court that there was no question of giving additional powers to the CBI Director. It said and allowing him to report directly to the minister instead of through the Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training as this would possibly result in abuse rather than improving the functioning of the premier investigation agency. “Exercise of powers without adequate checks and balances would not be consonant with settled constitutional principles and would always carry the risk of potential misuse and may not be conducive to fearless and independent functioning of the organisation (CBI) at all levels,” the government said in an affidavit filed in the SC. “If the CBI Director reports directly to the Ministerin- charge of the administrative Department, the superintendence of the Minister de hors (sans) the institutional and organisational support would stand compromised and an independent layer of scrutiny would no longer be available,” the government said.

Contending that the “Secretary represents an independent, dispassionate and impartial layer of scrutiny aiding the minister-in-charge in effective discharge of his duty and superintendence,” the government said “in fact, functional efficacy may prove to be counter-productive if not exercised with due care.” The government has filed the affidavit in response to CBI’s demand for vesting its Director with ex-officio powers of a Union Secretary as part of efforts to make the agency function efficiently and more independently without political interference. The issue of CBI’s powers had cropped up during the hearing of the coal scam case by the Supreme Court. The CBI also sought powers to appoint prosecutors to pursue its cases in courts. Opposing this, the Centre said the SC had, in several judgments, underlined the need for keeping the prosecutors out of the control of the prosecuting agencies in the interest of justice as stipulated in the code of criminal procedure (CrPC).

HC STAYS ARREST OF BHANSALI, RANVEER, DEEPIKA

CHANDIGARH (TIP): The Punjab and Haryana high court, on November 14, stayed the arrest of Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in connection with an FIR lodged against them in Jalandhar in connection with their movie Ram-Leela. Justice Jitender Chauhan of the high court has issued the order after hearing a petition filed by Bhansali, Ranveer and Deepika. When the case came up for hearing on Thursday, the counsel for the Bollywood stars pleaded that it was strange that the Jalandhar police registered the FIR without even ascertaining the facts. It was further argued that the grievance of the complainant in this case was that the movie’s title, the trailer and photographs were highly objectionable and offended the religious sentiments of general public believing in Hindu mythology. He argued that the story of the movie was contrary to the title, as it had nothing to do with Lord Ram’s life and the Delhi high court has already decided that no organization or individual can claim to be the sole interpreter to Hindu religion and sole proprietor of names of Hindu Gods. Bhansali, Ranveer and Deepika had moved the HC on Tuesday against the registration of case against them in Jalandhar. The police had booked Bhansali, Ranveer and Deepika in September on the basis of a complaint filed by one Lalit Kumar. The FIR was registered under Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the IPC.
