He frees us from bondage, O Saints, and saves us from possessiveness. || 3 || Becoming Merciful, my Lord and Master has ended my comings and goings in reincarnation. Meeting with the Guru, Nanak has recognized the Supreme Lord God.

    || 4 || 27 || 97 || SIREE RAAG, FIFTH MEHL, FIRST HOUSE: Meeting with the humble beings, O Siblings of Destiny, the Messenger of Death is conquered. Meeting with the Perfect True Guru, all my worldly entanglements have ended. || 1 || O my True Guru, I am a sacrifice to You. I am a sacrifice to the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. By the Pleasure of Your Will, You have blessed me with the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord.

    || 1 || Pause || Those who have served You with love are truly wise. Those who have the Treasure of the Naam within emancipate others as well as themselves. There is no other Giver as great as the Guru, who has given the gift of the soul.

    || 2 || Blessed and acclaimed is the coming of those who have met the Guru with loving faith. Attuned to the True One, you shall obtain a place of honor in the Court of the Lord. Greatness is in the Hands of the Creator; it is obtained by pre-ordained destiny.

    || 3 || True is the Creator, True is the Doer. True is our Lord and Master, and True is His Support. So speak the Truest of the True. Through the True One, an intuitive and discerning mind is obtained. Nanak lives by chanting and meditating on the One, who is pervading within and contained amongst all.

    || 4 || 28 || 98 || SIREE RAAG, FIFTH MEHL: Worship the Guru, the Transcendent Lord, with your mind and body attuned to love. The True Guru is the Giver of the soul; He gives Support to all. Act according to the Instructions of the True Guru; this is the true philosophy. Without being attuned to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all attachment to Maya is just dust.

    || 1 || O my friend, reflect upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. In the Saadh Sangat, He dwells within the mind, and one’s works are brought to perfect fruition.

    || 1 || Pause || The Guru is All-powerful, the Guru is Infinite. By great good fortune, the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained. The Guru is Imperceptible, Immaculate and Pure. There is no other as great as the Guru. The Guru is the Creator, the Guru is the Doer. The Gurmukh obtains true glory. Nothing is beyond the Guru; whatever He wishes comes to pass.

    || 2 || The Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Wish-fulfilling Elysian Tree. The Guru is the Fulfiller of the desires of the mind. The Guru is the Giver of the Name of the Lord, by which all the world is saved. The Guru is All-powerful, the Guru is Formless; the Guru is Lofty, Inaccessible and Infinite. The Praise of the Guru is so sublime – what can any speaker say?

    || 3 || All the rewards which the mind desires are with the True Guru. One whose destiny is so pre-ordained, obtains the Wealth of the True Name. Entering the Sanctuary of the True Guru, you shall never die again. Nanak: may I never forget You, Lord. This soul, body and breath are Yours.

    || 4 || 29 || 99 || SIREE RAAG, FIFTH MEHL: O Saints, O Siblings of Destiny, listen: release comes only through the True Name. Worship the Feet of the Guru. Let the Name of the Lord be your sacred shrine of pilgrimage. Hereafter, you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord; there, even the homeless find a home.

    || 1 || O Siblings of Destiny, service to the True Guru alone is True. When the True Guru is pleased, we obtain the Perfect, Unseen, Unknowable Lord.

    || 1 || Pause || I am a sacrifice to the True Guru, who has bestowed the True Name. Night and day, I praise the True One; I sing the Glorious Praises of the True One. True is the food, and true are the clothes, of those who chant the True Name of the True One.

    || 2 || With each breath and morsel of food, do not forget the Guru, the Embodiment of Fulfillment. None is seen to be as great as the Guru. Meditate on Him twenty-four hours a day. As He casts His Glance of Grace, we obtain the True Name, the Treasure of Excellence.

    || 3 || The Guru and the Transcendent Lord are one and the same, pervading and permeating amongst all. Those who have such preordained destiny, meditate on the Naam. Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Guru, who does not die, or come and go in reincarnation.

    || 4 || 30 || 100 || ONE UNIVERSAL CREATOR GOD. BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU: SIREE RAAG, FIRST MEHL, FIRST HOUSE, ASHTAPADEES: I speak and chant His Praises, vibrating the instrument of my mind. The more I know Him, the more I vibrate it. The One, unto whom we vibrate and sing – how great is He, and where is His Place? Those who speak of Him and praise Him – they all continue speaking of Him with love.

    || 1 || O Baba, the Lord Allah is Inaccessible and Infinite. Sacred is His Name, and Sacred is His Place. He is the True Cherisher.

    || 1 || Pause || The extent of Your Command cannot be seen; no one knows how to write it. Even if a hundred poets met together, they could not describe even a tiny bit of it. No one has found Your Value; they all merely write what they have heard again and again.

    || 2 || The Pirs, the Prophets, the spiritual teachers, the faithful, the innocents and the martyrs, the Shaikhs, the mystics, the Qazis, the Mullahs and the Dervishes at His Door – they are blessed all the more as they continue reading their prayers in praise to Him.

    || 3 || He seeks no advice when He builds; He seeks no advice when He destroys. He seeks no advice while giving or taking. He alone knows His Creative Power; He Himself does all deeds. He beholds all in His Vision. He gives to those with whom He is pleased.

    || 4 || His Place and His Name are not known, no one knows how great is His Name. How great is that place where my Sovereign Lord dwells? No one can reach it; whom shall I go and ask?

    || 5 || One class of people does not like the other, when one has been made great. Greatness is only in His Great Hands; He gives to those with whom He is pleased. By the Hukam of His Command, He Himself regenerates, without a moment’s delay.

    || 6 || Everyone cries out, “More! More!”, with the idea of receiving. How great should we call the Giver? His Gifts are beyond estimation. O Nanak, there is no deficiency; Your Storehouses are filled to overflowing, age after age.

    || 7 || 1 || FIRST MEHL: All are brides of the Husband Lord; all decorate themselves for Him. But when the time comes to settle their accounts, their red robes are corrupt. His Love is not obtained through hypocrisy. Her false coverings bring only ruin.

    || 1 || In this way, the Dear Husband Lord ravishes and enjoys His bride. The happy soul-bride is pleasing to You, Lord; by Your Grace, You adorn her.

    || 1 || Pause || She is decorated with the Word of the Guru’s Shabad; her mind and body belong to her Husband Lord. With her palms pressed together, she stands, waiting on Him, and offers her True prayers to Him. Dyed in the deep crimson of the Love of her Darling Lord, she dwells in the Fear of the True One. Imbued with His Love, she is dyed in the color of His Love.

    || 2 || She is said to be the hand-maiden of her Beloved Lord; His sweetheart surrenders to His Name. True Love is never broken; she is united in Union with the True One. Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, her mind is pierced through. I am forever a sacrifice to Him.

    || 3 || That bride, who is absorbed into the True Guru, shall never become a widow. Her Husband Lord is Beautiful; His Body is forever fresh and new. The True One does not die, and shall not go. He continually enjoys His happy soul-bride; He casts His Gracious Glance of Truth upon her, and she abides in His Will.

    || 4 || The bride braids her hair with Truth; her clothes are decorated with His Love. Like the essence of sandalwood, He permeates her consciousness, and the Temple of the Tenth Gate is opened. The lamp of the Shabad is lit, and the Name of the Lord is her necklace.

    || 5 || She is the most beautiful among women; upon her forehead she wears the Jewel of the Lord’s Love. Her glory and her wisdom are magnificent; her love for the Infinite Lord is True. Other than her Beloved Lord, she knows no man. She enshrines love for the True Guru.

    || 6 || Asleep in the darkness of the night, how shall she pass her life-night without her Husband? Her limbs shall burn, her body shall burn, and her mind and wealth shall burn as well. When the Husband does not enjoy His bride, then her youth passes away in vain.

    || 7 || The Husband is on the Bed, but the bride is asleep, and so she does not come to know Him. While I am asleep, my Husband Lord is awake. Where can I go for advice? The True Guru has led me to meet Him, and now I dwell in the Fear of God. O Nanak, His Love is always with me. TO BE CONTINUED

  • THE RAMAYANA

    THE RAMAYANA

    continued from previous issue

And they met in consultation, joyously with one accord,
    Freely and in measured accents,
gave their answer to their lord: “Years of toil and watchful labour weigh upon thee, king of men, Young in years is righteous Rama, Heir and Regent let him reign,
We would see the princely Rama, Heir and Regent duly made,
Riding -on the royal tusker in the white umbrella’s shade!” Searching still their secret purpose, seeking still their thought to know,
Spake again the ancient monarch in his measured words and slow: “I would know your inner feelings,
    loyal thoughts and whispers kind,
For a doubt within me lingers and a shadow clouds my mind,
True to Law and true to Duty while I rule this kingdom fair,
Wherefore would you see my Rama seated as the Regent Heir?” “We would see him Heir and Regent,
Dasaratha, ancient lord, For his heart is blessed with valour,
virtue marks his deed and word,
Lives not man in all the wide earth who excels the stainless youth,
    In his loyalty to Duty,
in his love of righteous Truth, Truth impels his thought and action,
Truth inspires his soul with grace,
And his virtue fills the wide earth and exalts his ancient race! Bright Immortals know his valour; with his brother Lakshman hold He hath never failed to conquer hostile town or castled hold,
And returning from his battles, from the duties of the war,
Riding on his royal tusker or his allresistless car,
As a father to his children to his loving men he came,
Blessed our homes and maids and matrons till our infants lisped his name,
For our humble woes and troubles Rama hath the ready tear,
To our humble tales of suffering Rama lends his willing ear! Happy is the royal father who hath such a righteous son, For in town and mart and hamlet every heart hath Rama won,
Burghers and the toiling tillers tales of Rama’s kindness say,
Man and infant, maid and matron, morn and eve for Rama pray,
To the Gods and bright Immortals we our inmost wishes send,
May the good and godlike Rama on his father’s throne ascend,
Great in gifts and great in glory,
    Rama doth our homage own,
We would see the princely Rama seated on his father’s throne!”

    THE CITY DECORATED

With his consort pious Rama, pure in deed and pure in thought,
After evening’s due ablutions NARAYANA’S chamber sought,
Prayed unto the Lord of Creatures, NARAYANA Ancient Sire,
Placed his offering on his forehead,
poured it on the lighted fire,
    Piously partook the remnant,
sought for NARAYANA’S aid, As he kept his fast and vigils on the grass of kusa spread.
With her lord the saintly Sita silent passed the sacred night,
    Contemplating World’s Preserver,
    Lord of Heaven’s ethereal height,
And within the sacred chamber on the grass of kusa lay,
Till the crimson streaks of morning, ushered in the festive day,
Till the royal bards and minstrels chanted forth the morning call,
    Healing through the holy chamber,
echoing through the roval hall. Past the night of sacred vigils,
in his silken robes arrayed, Message of the proud anointment Rama to the Brahmans said, And the Brahmans spake to burghers that the festive day was come,
Till the mart and crowded pathway rang with note of pipe and drum,
And the townsmen heard rejoicing of the vigils of the night,
Kept by Rama and by Sita, for the day’s auspicious rite.
Rama shall be Heir and Regent, Rama shall be crowned to-day,
Rapid flew the gladdening message with the morning’s gladsome ray,
And the people of the city, maid and matron, man and boy,
Decorated fair Ayodhya in their wild tumultuous joy! On the temple’s lofty steeple high as cloud above the air,
On the crossing of the pathways,
in the garden green and fair,
    On the merchant’s ample warehouse,
on the shop with stores displayed,
On the mansion of the noble by the cunning artist made,
On the gay and bright pavilion, on the high and shady trees.
    Banners rose and glittering streamers,
flags that fluttered in the breeze! Actors gay and nimble dancers,
    singers skilled in lightsome song,
With their antics and their music pleased the gay and gathered throng,
And the people met in conclaves, spake of Rama, Regent Heir,
And the children by the roadside lisped of Rama brave and fair! Women wove the scented garland,
    merry maids the censer lit,
Men with broom and sprinkled water swept the spacious mart and street,
Rows of trees and posts they planted hung with lamps for coming night,
That the midnight dark might rival splendour of the noonday light Troops of men and merry children laboured with a loving care,
Woman’s skill and woman’s fancy made the city passing fair, So that good and kindly Rama might his people’s toil approve, So that sweet and soft-eyed Sita might accept her people’s love! Groups of joyous townsmen gathered in the square or lofty hall,
Praised the monarch Dasa-ratha, regent Rama young and tall: “Great and good is Dasa-ratha born of Raghu’s royal race, In the fulness of his lifetime on his son he grants his grace,
And we hail the rite auspicious for our prince of peerless might, He will guard us by his valotir,
he will save our cherished right, Dear unto his loving brothers in his father’s palace hall,
As is Rama to his brothers dear is Rama to us all, Long live ancient Dasa-ratha king of Raghu’s royal race, We shall see his son anointed by his father’s righteous grace! Thus of Rama’s consecration spake the burghers one and all, And the men from distant hamlets poured within the city wall,
From the confines of the empire,
north and south and west and east,
Came to see the consecration and to share the royal feast! And the rolling tide of nations raised their voices loud and high,
Like the tide of sounding ocean when the full moon lights the sky,
And Ayodhya thronged by people from the hamlet ,
mart and lea, Was tumultuous like the ocean thronged by creatures of the sea!

    INTRIGUE

In the inner palace chamber stood the proud and peerless queen,
With a mother’s joy Kaikeyi gaily watched the festive scene,
But with deep and deadly hatred Manthara,
her nurse and maid, Marked the city bright with banners,
and in scornful accents said: “Take thy presents back, Kaikeyi,
for they ill befit the clay,
And when clouds of sorrow darken,
ill beseems thee to be gay,
And thy folly moves my laughter though an anguish wakes my sigh,

FIND THE PLEASURE SPOTS IN YOUR MAN

Not the obvious hotspots, but there are some spots which if you identify can make your man go bonkers with experiencing maximum erotic pleasure. The body gets its maximum pleasure from the senses and touch makes all the difference when it comes to experiencing erotica.

While a lot is said about the male G spot, it varies from man to man on which part of the male body gets titillated the maximum. Here’re some places where you can make your man feel absolutely titillated and sexually moved.

    Back

The G spot need not be centrally located. There are various pleasure hotspots which one can find out. Caress the back gently with your lips, better still with your tongue. Moist tongue or lips will move your partner and the gestures and emotional currents themselves will tell you whether that touch was a major turn on or not.

    Mouth

A kiss indeed sums it up beautifully. And it is this kiss – the lips, the tongue and the pleasure while the lips gently give each a peck that one can know how the touch of the lips turns your man on. Make it a gentle affair with your lips first and then let your tongue explore those lips and the mouth to make him feel the hotspot.

  • HOW TO BEAT FATIGUE AT WORK

HOW TO BEAT FATIGUE AT WORK

Do you often doze off on your desk at work? Fatigue is a major workplace hazard. It reduces your performance and productivity. Many studies have revealed that jaded people are often incompetent at work, and are thus paid less! To put it simply, fatigue is a feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy that does not go away even when you rest. People may feel fatigued in body or mind (physical or psychological fatigue). But what is the cause of fatigue? Most of the time, it can be traced to one or more of your daily habits or routines. It is usually a result of physical exertion, poor eating habits, emotional stress, boredom, lack of sleep or weight. With a few simple lifestyle changes, you can regain vitality and boost your energy levels.

    ALWAYS BE ACTIVE

Walk over to your colleagues instead of using the chat messenger or email to communicate with your workmates. Take the stairs instead of the lift if your workstation isn’t too high up in a building. Park your car a little further off and walk to your office. You may think that these small moves don’t really matter, but your body is silently burning calories. You need to burn only 3,500 calories to lose 12 kg of weight.Even if you don’t remember the math, your body keeps count of every single move you make, or don’t make.

    GO FOR SMALL MEALS

If you are used to eating three big meals a day, break it up into six to eight meals, and eat every two hours. Remember this, digestion is a calorieburning activity in itself. Your body burns calories to digest the calories you eat. Eating at longer intervals fails to give your digestion sys tem a good workout. Apart from breakfast, lunch and dinner, go for mini meals (a fruit or biscuits) during your midmorning and mid-afternoon snack breaks.

    HAVE A HEARTY BREAKFAST

Not eating breakfast isn’t smart – you may think you are eating less food during the day by directly going for your mid-morning tea or lunch, but not eating breakfast makes you gain weight! Because your body has been starved of food while you were sleep ing, it needs food within an hour of waking up, to get its various systems running smoothly (including me tabolism). So, when you skip breakfast, your body panics because it thinks it’s starving and stores the next meal you eat in its fat reserves.

    SLEEP ON TIME

Sleep deprivation causes weigh gain and makes people tired very easily. There are two main factors that regulate appetite. Leptin is the satiety hormone (which gives you the signal that you are full) while ghrelin is your hunger hormone (which gives you the signal that you are hungry). There are studies that suggest sleep deprivation causes both leptin and ghrelin to malfunction, leaving you with the feeling of not being full enough or making you feel hungry even when you may not need food.

    EXERCISE ON WEEKENDS

If you’re too busy with work to incorporate exercise in your daily routine, make it something you look forward to every weekend. Clubbing fun with fitness is the key to staying motivated. There’s a host of things you can do – play squash, tennis, football, or jog, run, spin, dance and do yoga.

    A BETTER BALANCE

Finding some `me’ time is the ideal way to beat stress. Ask yourself: Are you taking on too much? Can you delegate some of your work? If you are constantly feeling overwhelmed and pressurised at work, maybe that’s the reason you are gaining weight, even if you aren’t leading a sedantary lifestyle. No matter what anyone says, a work-life balance is crucial to get the best of both your body and your mind.

  • YOGA CAN CURE SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDERS

YOGA CAN CURE SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDERS

Anew study claims that yoga and other exercises, which have relaxing effect on our bodies, can help people with social anxiety disorders look at the world positively. Adam Heenan, a Ph.D. from Queen’s University found that relaxation activities literally change the way people perceive the world, altering their perception so that they view the environment in a less threatening, less negative way.

For people with mood and anxiety disorders, this is an important breakthrough. For the research, Heenan used point-light displays, a depiction of a human that is comprised of a series of dots representing the major joints. Human point-light displays are depth-ambiguous and because of this, an observer looking at the display could see it as either facing towards them or facing away. Researchers have found people who are socially anxious perceive these figures as facing towards them more often.

Heenan said that they found that people who either walked or jogged on a treadmill for 10 minutes perceived these ambiguous figures as facing towards them (the observer) less often than those who simply stood on the treadmill. The same was true when people performed progressive muscle relaxation. This was important because anxious people display a bias to focus on more threatening things in their environment. The research is published in PLOS one.

  • HOW CHICKPEAS HELP IN WEIGHT LOSS

HOW CHICKPEAS HELP IN WEIGHT LOSS

Ahealthy meal plan that helps weight loss is incomplete without chickpeas and their healthy weight loss benefits. Add them to salads, curries, vegetables, just about anything can use these wonderful energy powerhouses.

Read on to understand just why chickpeas are good for weight loss. The nutlike taste and buttery texture of chickpeas is not the only reason to eye this humble pea; its amazing weight loss capabilities makes it a dieters favourite. In 2010, a study was conducted to test the ability of chickpea to lower food consumption in 42 participants over a 12 week study.

The same people were later asked to follow their regular diet for weeks. Results showed that people claimed that the level of satiation after eating chickpea was higher. Due to their high fiber content, chickpeas make a great weight loss food by making one feel fuller for longer. The fibre content also takes care of digestive disorders. Studies have revealed that chickpeas being lower in fat levels can lower bad cholesterol and overall cholesterol levels.

Chickpeas for diabetics: Chickpeas provide carbohydrates for people sensitive to insulin and those suffering from diabetes. Interesting fact: Chickpeas equal milk or yogurt in calcium level. Chickpeas contain high quality protein and are a good source of folic acid, manganese, iron, copper, magnesium and molybdenum.

  • Foods for a longer and stronger erection

Foods for a longer and stronger erection

Did you know there are foods for a longer erection? Dr Vijay Singhal, Sexologist with Delhi based Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute lists out different foods that you can eat for a longer erection. Watermelons, papayas and bananas (rich in potassium) increase blood flow by dilating arterioles (small blood vessels) and thus help in improving an erection. Nuts, milk and cheese contain zinc, which is good for the male sex hormone testosterone, which in turn is required for an erection.

Also, garlic and onion contain allicin, which helps increase blood flow. Similarly, dark chocolates contain flavanoids which increase blood flow. Cherries have been found effective in promoting health by scavenging action against free radicals. Walnuts which are rich in omega 6 fatty acids and arginine help in the production of nitric oxide, thus causing relaxation of arterioles and increasing the blood flow. One must note that in some cases, diabetes leads to erectile dysfunction. Therefore, for diabetics, it is important to have control over sugar levels and maintain a healthy diet. Also, patients who suffer from hypertension face erection problems and should try a low salt diet.

Govt wants banks to spot suspicious foreign deals

MUMBAI (TIP): The government has put payments made by Indian companies to foreign vendors and routed through Indian banks under the scanner after the Supreme Courtappointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money and the Central Bureau of Investigation expressed fears over possible misuse. Bankers said that a few days ago, department of financial services in the finance ministry has dashed off a letter, asking banks to look into all such payments made to foreign entities and report those which they viewed as suspicious.

A top-level bank executive added that payments made to Chinese companies and those involving power equipment had been flagged. A senior government official too confirmed that letter had been sent but did not share details. “We are trying to identify suspicious transactions as there are fears of over-invoicing,” the officer said, while refusing to disclose the future course of action on the grounds that it may be premature.

The SIT had pointed to overinvoicing of power equipment imports being an easy way of covering up black money in India and had identified instances with the extent of manipulation in one case estimated at around Rs 6,000 crore. Separately, the Adani Group is being investigated by CBI for alleged over-invoicing. Bankers, however, sought to play down the worries, saying that most of the transactions are clean and there may be one-off cases, which will come to light in the weeks ahead. But, coming amid the Narendra Modi government’s key poll plank of a clean-up act and a crackdown on black money, the finance ministry is not taking any chances.

Following the apprehensions expressed by the two entities, the government fears that some of the companies that deal in high-value transactions with overseas players, may have used the overestimated value of the contracts to avail of loans from Indian as well as foreign lenders. In addition, a higher project cost will also translate into higher tariffs for consumers as regulators factor in all costs, while deciding the cost of power.

  • RBI SIMPLIFIES KYC NORMS AHEAD OF JAN DHAN YOJANA LAUNCH

RBI SIMPLIFIES KYC NORMS AHEAD OF JAN DHAN YOJANA LAUNCH

MUMBAI (TIP): The Reserve Bank of India announced simplified ‘know your customer’ (KYC) norms for low-risk customers ahead of the launch of the Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana on Thursday. Under the new norms low-risk customers can provide KYC documents within six months of opening the account.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana will be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on completion of 100 days of the new government. The scheme envisages financial inclusion by initially providing every household with a bank account. Subsequently through this account the underprivileged will get subsidies, insurance cover, and overdraft facilities.

Those persons who do not have any of the ‘officially valid documents’ can open ‘small accounts’ with banks. A ‘small account’ can be opened on the basis of a selfattested photograph and either a signature or thumb print in the presence of an official of the bank. Such accounts have limitations regarding the aggregate credits (not more than Rupees one lakh in a year), aggregate withdrawals (not more than Rupees ten thousand in a month) and balance in the accounts (not more than Rupees fifty thousand at any point in time). “These small accounts would be valid normally for a period of twelve months.

Thereafter, such accounts would be allowed to continue for a further period of twelve more months, if the account holder provides a document showing that she/he has applied for any of the officially valid document, within twelve months of opening the small account,” RBI said. Earlier RBI had clarified that there is no requirement of submitting two separate documents for proof of identity and proof of address.

If the officially valid document submitted for opening a bank account has both, identity and address of the person, there is no need for submitting any other documentary proof. Officially valid documents (OVDs) for KYC purpose include: passport, driving licence, voters’ ID card, PAN card, Aadhaar letter issued by UIDAI and Job Card issued by NREGA signed by a State Government official. “Since migrant workers and transferred employees often face difficulties while submitting a proof of current address for opening a bank account, such customers can submit only one proof of address (either current or permanent) while opening a bank account or while undergoing periodic updation.

If the current address is different from the address mentioned on the proof of address submitted by the customer, a simple declaration about current address would be sufficient,” RBI said.

Government notifies FDI liberalization in Railways

NEW DELHI (TIP): The government on August 27 notified the liberalized FDI norms for the Railways, permitting 100 per cent foreign direct investment through automatic route in several areas, including high speed trains. Other segments of the Railways in which FDI will be allowed include suburban corridor projects through public private partnership (PPP), dedicated freight lines, rolling stock including train sets, locomotives/coaches manufacturing and maintenance facilities, railway electrification, signalling systems, freight terminals, passenger terminals and infrastructure in industrial parks like railway line/sidings. However, proposals involving FDI beyond 49 per cent in sensitive areas, from security point of view, will be placed before the cabinet committee on security (CCS) for approval by the Railway Ministry on a case-to-case basis, said a press note of the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP).

US LOSING TAX REVENUES AS FOOD, BEVERAGE FIRMS FLEE ABROAD

WASHINGTON (TIP): It’s a deal that’s left everyone unhappy, except perhaps the few corporate honchos who executed it. Americans are upset that Burger King, their beloved fast food franchise, is decamping to Canada. Canadians are appalled that the American chain is swallowing up its cherished coffee chain Tim Horton’s.

The US government too is mad as hell that Burger King is fleeing north, suspecting it is doing so because of lower taxes there. And Canadian politicians, who are constantly trying to get their country out of the American shadow (Al Capone once joked he doesn’t even know which street Canada is on), want to know what’s in it for Canadians, besides additional tax dollars. Things haven’t been this bad between the neighbors since the War of 1812, when the two countries last had a scrap.

They may be the world’s largest trading partners and they may be sharing the world’s longest border, but when it comes to certain things, the ‘twain shall never meet – like coffee and doughnuts, as Canadians spell it (Americans have shortened it to Donuts). Canadians have their Tim Horton’s, Americans have their Starbucks, and that’s the way they like it.

But Burger King has broken the unwritten compact by agreeing to merge (a euphemism for takeover) with Tim Horton’s in a deal valued at $11 billion, in effect making it a sort of American McDonald’s plus Canadian Starbucks. The merger is expected to create the world’s third largest fast food company after McDonalds and Subway, enabling the rather more insular Canadian chain to be introduced to the nearly 100 countries where Burger King operates, while giving the American giant relief from high US corporate tax.

Apparently, BK took to heart a quip by the late Robin Williams that “Canada is like a loft apartment over a really great party,” a gag that justifies the Canadian complaint that while they may be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, Americans have a bad case of megalomania.

  • IMF CHIEF LAGARDE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN FRANCE

IMF CHIEF LAGARDE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN FRANCE

PARIS (TIP): Christine Lagarde, the chief of the International Monetary Fund, was put under official investigation for negligence in a French corruption probe that dates back to her days as France’s finance minister. After a fourth round of questioning before magistrates on Wednesday, Lagarde said she was returning to her work in Washington, and called the investigation “without basis.” She is the third IMF managing director in a decade to face legal troubles.

Lagarde and her former chief of staff have faced questions about their role in an arbitration ruling that handed 400 million euros ($531 million) to a French businessman with a checkered past. “After three years of proceedings, dozens of hours of questioning, the court found from the evidence that I committed no offense, and the only allegation is that I was not sufficiently vigilant,” she said in a statement.

Under French law, the official investigation is equivalent to preliminary charges, meaning there is reason to suspect an infraction. Investigating judges can later drop a case or issue formal charges and send it to trial. Defense lawyer Yves Repiquet said the negligence claim was “paltry,” ”extremely minor,” and “unfounded,” and said investigators could not make a valid case for tougher penalties. He said he will file a motion to have the preliminary charge dismissed. “There was no reason for her to resign,” Repiquet said by phone. Lagarde will not be required to answer questions for the case for months at the least, he said, insisting it will have no impact on her ability to do her job.

The charge could bring up to a year in prison and a fine of 15,000 euros. “We’re nowhere near that just yet,” said lawyer Christopher Mesnooh of Field Fisher Waterhouse. “This will probably not go to any kind of a trial or a next stage until next year at the earliest.” “It’s a very complicated matter, with enormous political and legal ramifications.” The 400-million-euro payment was awarded to Bernard Tapie, a flamboyant and high-profile businessman, in a dispute over the sale of his majority stake in sportswear company Adidas nearly a generation ago.

Tapie sought to sell his stake in the mid-1990s, asking bank Credit Lyonnais to handle the deal. He felt the sale was mishandled and sued the bank, which at the time was owned by the French state. At the heart of Lagarde’s questioning was her role in the unusual decision to handle the case by private arbitration, rather than through the French legal system.

  • IN A FIRST, SCIENTISTS GROW FULLY FUNCTIONAL ORGAN FROM SCRATCH INSIDE A LIVING ANIMAL

IN A FIRST, SCIENTISTS GROW FULLY FUNCTIONAL ORGAN FROM SCRATCH INSIDE A LIVING ANIMAL

LONDON (TIP): Scientists have for the first time grown a fully functional organ from scratch inside a living animal by transplanting cells that were originally created in a laboratory. The advance could in future aid the development of ‘lab-grown’ replacement organs. Scientists created a working thymus, a vital immune system – “nerve centre” located near the heart, with connective tissue cells from a mouse embryo which were converted into a completely different cell strain by flipping a genetic “switch” in their DNA.

The resulting cells grew spontaneously into the whole organ when injected into the mouse with other similar cells. Researchers from the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, took cells called fibroblasts from a mouse embryo and converted them directly into a completely unrelated type of cell – specialised thymus cells – using a technique called ‘reprogramming’.

When mixed with other thymus cell types and transplanted into mice, these cells formed a replacement organ that had the same structure, complexity and function as a healthy native adult thymus. The reprogrammed cells were also capable of producing T cells – a type of white blood cell important for fighting infection – in the lab. The researchers hope that with further refinement their lab-made cells could form the basis of a readily available thymus transplant treatment for people with a weakened immune system. They may also enable the production of patient-matched T cells.

The thymus, located near the heart, is a vital organ of the immune system. It produces T cells, which guard against disease by scanning the body for malfunctioning cells and infections. When they detect a problem, they mount a coordinated immune response that tries to eliminate harmful cells, such as cancer, or pathogens like bacteria and viruses. People without a fully functioning thymus can’t make enough T cells and as a result are very vulnerable to infections. This can be a particular problem for some patients who need a bone marrow transplant (for example to treat leukaemia), as a functioning thymus is needed to rebuild the immune system once the transplant has been received.

The problem can also affect children; around one in 4,000 babies born each year in the UK have a malfunctioning or completely absent thymus. Thymus disorders can sometimes be treated with infusions of extra immune cells, or transplantation of a thymus organ soon after birth, but both are limited by a lack of donors and problems matching tissue to the recipient. Being able to create a complete transplantable thymus from cells in a lab would be a huge step forward in treating such conditions.

And while several studies have shown it is possible to produce collections of distinct cell types in a dish, such as heart or liver cells, scientists haven’t yet been able to grow a fully intact organ from cells created outside the body. Professor Clare Blackburn from the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, who led the research, said “The ability to grow replacement organs from cells in the lab is one of the ‘holy grails’ in regenerative medicine. But the size and complexity of lab-grown organs has so far been limited. By directly reprogramming cells we’ve managed to produce an artificial cell type that, when transplanted, can form a fully organised and functional organ.

  • NEW IMPLANT MAY MAKE READING GLASSES A THING OF THE PAST

NEW IMPLANT MAY MAKE READING GLASSES A THING OF THE PAST

LONDON (TIP): Scientists have developed a tiny implant, no bigger than a pinhead, which sits inside the cornea to reverse vision problems in ageing eyes. As some people age, their ability to switch focus between near and distant objects diminishes, a condition known as presbyopia. It can skew the perception of depth and makes reading in poor light impossible.

Now, scientists have developed a tiny implant that sits inside the cornea and slightly increases its curvature, to allow the eye to focus again. Known as a Raindrop corneal inlay, the technique was developed by scientists at ReVision Optics in California but the first operations have now been carried out at a clinic in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, ‘The Telegraph’ reported. The inlay is called Raindrop because it is the shape of a droplet and is made of a substance called hydrogel which is also used in contact lenses.

Hydrogel is 80 per cent water which makes it more compatible with the eye than other corneal implants. Until now, the only long-term treatment for presbyopia has been laser surgery, but sufferers are still likely to need reading glasses when the light is poor. The results are often not permanent because lasers remove part of the cornea to reshape it, and so the problem can return as the lens flattens out again. The new operation – which costs 2,495 pounds – is quicker, taking just 10 minutes, whereas laser surgery can take an hour.

  • Nasa satellite to help farmers combat drought

Nasa satellite to help farmers combat drought

WASHINGTON (TIP): Nasa scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have developed a new satellite than can predict the severity of droughts worldwide and help farmers maximize crop yield. Currently, there is no ground- or satellite-based global network monitoring soil moisture at a local level.

Farmers, scientists and resource managers can place sensors in the ground, but these only provide spot measurements and are rare across some critical agricultural areas in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Nasa’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission, scheduled to launch later, will collect the kind of local data agricultural and water managers worldwide need. SMAP uses two microwave instruments to monitor the top 5 centimetres of soil on Earth’s surface.

Together, the instruments create soil moisture estimates with a resolution of about 9 kilometres mapping the entire globe every two or three days. Although this resolution cannot show how soil moisture might vary within a single field, it will give the most detailed maps yet made. “Agricultural drought occurs when the demand for water for crop production exceeds available water supplies from precipitation, surface water and sustainable withdrawals from groundwater,” said Forrest Melton, a research scientist in the Ecological Forecasting Lab at Nasa Ames Research Centre in Moffett Field, California.

“Based on snowpack and precipitation data in California, by March we had a pretty good idea that by summer we’d be in a severe agricultural drought,” Melton added. “But irrigation in parts of India, the Middle East and other regions relies heavily on the pumping of groundwater during some or all of the year,” Melton said. Underground water resources are hard to estimate, so farmers who rely on groundwater have fewer indicators of approaching shortfalls than those whose irrigation comes partially from rain or snowmelt. For these parts of the world where farmers have little data available to help them understand current conditions, SMAP’s measurements could fill a significant void. Some farmers handle drought by changing irrigation patterns. Others delay planting or harvesting to give plants their best shot at success.

  • INDIAN-ORIGIN SCIENTIST CREATES MECHANICAL BRAIN TO TEACH ROBOTS HOW TO LIVE ALONGSIDE HUMANS

INDIAN-ORIGIN SCIENTIST CREATES MECHANICAL BRAIN TO TEACH ROBOTS HOW TO LIVE ALONGSIDE HUMANS

LONDON (TIP): An Indian-originscientist has created a mechanical brain that will teach robots how to live and perform alongside humans. Robo Brain – a large-scale computational system that learns from publicly available Internet resources – is currently downloading and processing about 1 billion images, 120,000 YouTube videos, and 100 million how-to documents and appliance manuals. The information is being translated and stored in a robot-friendly format that robots will be able to draw on when they need it.

Ashutosh Saxena, assistant professor of computer science at Cornell University along with colleagues at Cornell, Stanford and Brown universities and the University of California, Berkeley say Robo Brain will process images to pick out the objects in them and by connecting images and video with text, it will learn to recognize objects and how they are used, along with human language and behavior. The system employs what computer scientists call structured deep learning, where information is stored in many levels of abstraction.

A robot’s computer brain stores what it has learned in a form mathematicians call a Markov model. The nodes could represent objects, actions or parts of an image, and each one is assigned a probability – how much you can vary it and still be correct. In searching for knowledge, a robot’s brain makes its own chain and looks for one in the knowledge base that matches within those limits. “The Robo Brain will look like a gigantic, branching graph with abilities for multi-dimensional queries,” said Aditya Jami, a visiting researcher at Cornell, who designed the large-scale database for the brain. Perhaps something that looks like a chart of relationships between Facebook friends, but more on the scale of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Like a human learner, Robo Brain will have teachers, thanks to crowdsourcing. The Robo Brain website will display things the brain has learned, and visitors will be able to make additions and corrections. They say that to serve as helpers in our homes, offices and factories, robots will need to understand how the world works and how the humans around them behave. Robotics researchers have been teaching them these things one at a time: How to find your keys, pour a drink, put away dishes, and when not to interrupt two people having a conversation.

This will all come in one package with Robo Brain. “Our laptops and cell phones have access to all the information we want. If a robot encounters a situation it hasn’t seen before it can query Robo Brain in the cloud,” said Saxena. He adds that if a robot sees a coffee mug, it can learn from Robo Brain not only that it’s a coffee mug, but also that liquids can be poured into or out of it, that it can be grasped by the handle and that it must be carried upright when it is full, as opposed to when it is being carried from the dishwasher to the cupboard.

Bolt to visit India – to play cricket with Yuvraj

Jamaican sprint superstar Usain Bolt will make his first trip to India next week to play cricket against India’s World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh, organisers said on Tuesday. The cricket face-off — titled ‘Bolt and Yuvi – Battle of the Legends’ — is being organised by sportswear giants Puma and will take place at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore on September 2.

The format and details of the game have not been revealed. “Puma brings Usain Bolt down for a one-of-a-kind cricket face-off between two sporting legends,” the organisers said in a media release. “For the first time ever, watch the fastest man on earth challenge Yuvraj Singh to an exclusive cricket showdown.” Bolt, 28, a six-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder in both the 100m and 200m, is an ardent cricket fan who in the past has expressed a desire to play in the Indian Premier League.

Yuvraj, a left-handed all-rounder who is not part of the Indian team currently touring England, was man of the tournament when Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men won the World Cup in Mumbai in 2011. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) said it had no role in Bolt’s brief visit to the country. “Both Bolt and Yuvraj are brand ambassadors of the sponsors, we are not involved in this programme,” an AFI official said.

  • INDIA ROAR BACK TO FORM IN FAMILIAR FORMAT

INDIA ROAR BACK TO FORM IN FAMILIAR FORMAT

    Raina’s 100 and Jadeja’s 4 for 28 set up a massive 133-run win over England in the 2nd ODI.

    India 304 for 6 (Raina 100, Dhoni 52, Rohit 52, Woakes 4-52) beat England 161 (Jadeja 4-28) by 133 runs

CARDIFF (TIP): The Tests have departed into the folder marked “Red Ball Disasters”; India’s intention is now to stage a party to help them forget what has gone before. One game into the Royal London ODI series, the outlook has been transformed. They look empowered again. Raina made precisely 100 of 75 balls. (AP)Raina made precisely 100 of 75 balls. (AP)Suresh Raina, ignored for the Test series, had the undamaged mindset to fill the role of party compere as he played with an exuberance rarely seen from India during their mauling in the Test series, proceeding with a cheerful vigour to make 100 from 75 balls, his first ODI century for four years.

England’s response was dire, resulting in their second-heaviest defeat against India, in terms of runs. They can console themselves that people tend to lose interest when games are decided by Duckworth-Lewis calculations, but a passing stranger wandering down the banks of the Taff and armed only with an abacus could have concluded that this was a trouncing. India have happy memories of Cardiff: they have made 300-plus here three times, the only side to do so, and beat South Africa and Sri Lanka here during their Champions Trophy success last summer.

England did not get a look in as Ravindra Jadeja, whose leftarm spin has repeatedly tormented them in the limited-overs game, just needed to turn in a routine shift to yield 4 for 28. At the end, Ravi Shastri, imposed for the series as emergency team director, applauded seriously and shook hands with men in suits. With ODIs predominating in the months ahead, England have a much-anticipated chance to develop a new brand of one-day cricket. On this evidence, they should call it “Careworn”. Faced by a slightly rejigged target of 295 in 47 overs, they survived the new ball convincingly enough – 54 on the board by the 11th over – but then five wickets tumbled for 31 in 12 overs as all their old doubts resurfaced.

Alastair Cook cobbled together some sort of form during the Test series to protect his captaincy but that is a long way removed from discovering the dash needed in the oneday game. He played in Alex Hales’ shadow, making 19 in 33 balls, before he fell lbw to Mohammed Shami, manufacturing a leg-side shot. Ian Bell’s leave alone saw him bowled second ball later in the over. No immediate retort then from the top-order players who Graeme Swann, a former team-mate has said will leave England’s World Cup challenge stillborn.

Batting under the lights looked a more onerous proposition than when Raina sallied forth earlier in the day, particularly when Bhuvneshwar Kumar brought one back to bowl Joe Root, but it was England’s deficiencies against spin bowling in midinnings that were most galling for them as a deteriorating position left them unwilling to hit through the infield. Hales had unfurled some flowing off-side drives – his trademark – during a debut innings of 40, but a top-edged sweep against Jadeja silenced him. Jadeja’s extra bounce also fooled Jos Buttler into poking a furtive catch into the off side.

With light drizzle in the air, Eoin Morgan’s stretching sweep at R Ashwin lobbed to deep square leg. For England, the collapse could hardly have been more disheartening. Up on a rainspattered balcony, the coach Peter Moores checked his notes and Cook checked his fingernails. Neither offered a solution. At least Ben Stokes, whose average of 1.8 in his last 10 England innings was barely credible, could find a score of 23 faintly consoling. And James Tredwell hit his first ODI six – off Jadeja, too. Driftwood in a sea of despond. There were also troubles for England with the ball.

Chris Jordan delivered 12 wides in a return of 0 for 73, five of them in a single Powerplay over, as a lack of rhythm that had been apparent during the Test series turned into something more ghoulish in the 50-over format. Jordan, shaking his head and perspiring heavily, looked perplexed. It was another bad moment on that England balcony as David Saker, the bowling coach, scratched his teeth in concern. But it was Raina, carefree even by his standards, who smash-and-grabbed the match for India.

This was his first ODI hundred for 95 innings, stretching back to a tri-nation tournament in Bangladesh, when he made 106 against Sri Lanka in Dhaka in 2010. England’s quartet of right-arm pace bowlers offered an unvaried challenge, although the offspinner Tredwell had a rewarding outing considering his difficult season during which he was loaned out by Kent to Sussex. He was dismissed the ball after he had reached his century, making room to flay Chris Woakes through the off side but picking out James Anderson on the cover boundary. Woakes, despite conceding 20 from one over as Raina took charge, somehow returned 4 for 52.

Raina, unsurprisingly considering his lack of cricket, had a few streaky moments early on. Early boundaries included an unattractive leg-side swipe at Tredwell and an uncertain edge against Anderson, and he was fortunate to escape Tredwell’s lbw appeal on 17 but, as the floodlights cut through a murky South Wales day, he became electrified. England conceded 62 in the Powerplay between 35 and 40 overs – 42 of them in 16 balls to Raina. He withdrew his front leg to loft Woakes straight for six and then top-edge over the ropes to assert that his luck was in. For Virat Kohli, though, there was no release from a miserable summer.

After an unproductive Test series, in which he made only 134 runs at 13.40, the opportunity beckoned for Kohli to reassert himself in the one-day series, but he fell third ball for nought as he tried to come down the pitch to crash Woakes over the off side and plopped the ball into the hands of Cook at mid-off. India began nervously.

It took only two deliveries for them to be reminded of their deficiencies in the Test series as Anderson curved an outswinger past Rohit Sharma’s outside edge. Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan twice survived after running mix-ups; Woakes had Dhawan caught at the wicket. But Rohit found an ally in Ajinkya Rahane in a third-wicket stand of 91 in 16 as England’s back-up seamers failed to maintain the pressure on the sort of dibblydobbly day that would have made Ravi Bopara, a controversial omission from England’s squad, a useful man to have around.

  • Mardaani

    Mardaani

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Tahir Raj Bhasin
    Direction: Pradeep Sarkar
    Genre: Thriller
    Duration: 2 hours 33 minutes

Story: A braveheart lady inspector from the crime branch stumbles on a sex-trafficking racket. Does she succeed in bringing the culprits to book?

Review: It’s raining fearless cops on the Bollywood marquee. Last week, it was Singham, who, in his khakis, returned to take the pants off corrupt politicians and god-men. And this week, it is Lady Singham or Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani Mukerji), looking dapper, albeit briefly, in a police inspector’s uniform, who wreaks havoc in Pradeep Sarkar’s Mardaani.

The film claims to be inspired by true events. However, for cinema-buffs, it’s easier to trace the inspiration to several Hollywood thrillers, including the Liam Neeson one, Taken (2008). Like Neeson, a former CIA operative hunting down his daughter who is kidnapped by human traffickers for sexual slavery, Rani is a current-day crime branch inspector searching for a teenager who goes missing from a local Mumbai shelter. The young girl Pyaari (Priyanka Sharma) is someone whom Shivani treats like her own niece. Her sole objective in the film is to track down the men who have kidnapped the orphan and blow the lid off their sex racket. As she engages in a thrilling encounter with the baddie Karan Rastogi (Tahir Raj Bhasin) in Mumbai and later in Delhi, you can sit back and enjoy the action.

While there is nothing in the plot that you haven’t seen before, it is still watchable for the superb performance of Rani, whose amber-coloured eyes breathe fire when she is packing those punches! And her unabashed use of Hindi expletives like `chut**’, `madar*****’ should work with the lowest common denominator. The frequent *MCBCs* is the obvious reason for the adults-only tag. This movie could have continuous recall had the pace been racier. And if you could also buy into the emotional tracks between Shivani and her husband, her niece or her ward. Also, Rani is the only member of the cast with star value. The rest of the actors, including the English-speaking young goon, are inconsequential.

Actress Nargis Fakhri has denied reports of dating her ‘Main Tera Hero’ co-star Varun Dhawan, saying she is romantically linked with herself and not anyone else. “What? No way dude. Oh, really it’s been written? I haven’t read that. I don’t have any idea about that. People just right stuff, right. That’s hilarious,” Nargis told in an interview on the sidelines of the unveiling of Myntra’s style helpline here. Indirectly blaming the media, the 34-year-old model-turned-actress said such stuff is written out of blues, without any truth in it.

“There was a rumour that I was dancing with another actor all night long in a party when I hadn’t even seen that person. No offence, but people just write stuff,” she said. Asked what was her idea of a good date, she said Indian boys should not be fanciful but creative while dating girls. “Indian boys should learn to date properly. You needn’t have to be fancy but creative.

Ask the girl for a date. Do something nice. Don’t expect anything – that is the main thing. Never expect anything. Have a nice time. Have conversation,” she said. It goes same with her also, Nargis said, adding, she keeps that standard and does not go any lower than that. “I had one good date in New York. The person picked me up on my doorstep. Took me to hotels and nightclub and dropped me at my home. Can you imagine? That was the most memorable date I ever had and to me I keep that standard. you can’t go any lower than that,” she said.

ANUSHKA SHARMA DENIES WEDDING PLANS WITH VIRAT KOHLI

Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma’s representative has rubbished reports that she is planning to tie the knot with Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. There were reports that BCCI had allowed the 26- year-old actress to stay in the same hotel as Kohli, the vice-captain of Indian Cricket Team, during the tour of England as they were going to tie the knot soon. But, now the ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ actress’s representative has released a statement saying there is no truth to the story.

“There are several stories online about Anushka Sharma’s impending wedding. However I would like to set the record straight that there is absolutely no truth to these rumours and I would like to request you to refrain from conjecturing about the same,” her representative said. Kohli and Anushka have been grabbing headlines ever since they were first spotted together during the tour of New Zealand.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes,
Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews,
Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Kellan Lutz,
    Ronda Rousey
    Direction: Patrick Hughes
    Genre: Action
    Duration: 2 hours 6 minutes

Story: Barney Ross (Stallone) and his battle-hardened warriors are back, this time augmented by the addition of new recruits. After springing their buddy out of prison, the Expendables are thwarted by arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson) while on an intercept mission. Stonebanks is also wanted by the US government. What’s worse, Conrad used to be Barney’s old friend.

Review: Expendables 3 brings together almost every Hollywood action star you’ve seen on screen from the 1980s and 1990s and gathers them together in a movie that has all the finesse of a tank and a helicopter in a glorious head-on collision. The barely-there plot seems like an afterthought, almost like a token concession given to the main thrust of this movie, which is really all about dishing out some good ol’ school mayhem. What is complex, however, is the cast list (evidenced by the over-crowded movie poster).

Ross is the leader, Lee Christmas (Statham) has a way with knives, Yin Yang (Li) is the obligatory martial arts expert, Trench (Schwarzenegger) still has an appetite for large caliber weapons and fat cigars, Doc (Snipes) is a former medic who is liberated from prison (and thereafter almost forgotten) and Gunnar Jensen (Lundgren) is a loose cannon with a volatile temperament. Drummer (Ford’s debut in the franchise) is the mission organizer. Among the new entrants, Galgo (Banderas), a sharpshooter with a motor-mouth and Gibson, who adds a snarky sort of finesse to his character, are impressive.

On the receiving end of a hail of bullets this time aren’t Chinese or Russians, but random bad guys, including some former Communist bloc baddies. While an ensemble cast is indeed impressive, you might feel that so much more could have been done with the story in terms of excitement. Stallone and Arnie fans might also feel a bit shortchanged regarding how much screen time their two favourite characters have got. While the action is indeed high gear, the gore (evidenced in the previous film) is turned down a notch. Nonetheless, it does serve up a decent chunk of oldschool action.
