HEALTH CONSCIOUS CINDY PULLS CHILDREN OUT OF SCHOOL

Model Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber recently pulled their two children out of school over health concerns. Crawford and other parents made the decision after testing found high levels of toxic chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in window caulking at the Malibu High School. According to Crawford, the school tested 10 random classrooms for PCBs, and four were found to be over the federal limit. The school plans to remove caulk in those four classrooms and periodically monitor for air and dust, reports contactmusic.com. “The problem is, for me, that they haven’t tested the source,” said Crawford.

  • The Giver

    The Giver

Cast: Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites,
Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift,
    Cameron Monaghan, Odeya Rush
    Direction: Phillip Noyce
    Genre: Drama
    Duration: 1 hour 37 minutes

    Story:

Jonas (Thwaite) lives in a utopian society that celebrates conformity and uniformity to preserve peace. He is chosen to be the next ‘Receiver of Memory’ and learn about the primal feelings of the past world. The more he learns, the more he realizes how fake his carefully engineered society is.

    Review:

A squeaky-clean city is portrayed in flat monochrome (a visual metaphor for a society controlled by a rigid code of rules, where individualism and the questioning of authority are discouraged) and is perched on a hilltop and surrounded entirely by clouds. Its inhabitants dress more or less the same, aren’t allowed to hold hands in public and they eat food that looks like it was cooked by a robot.

Narrator and protagonist Jonas has a mom (Holmes) who repeatedly tut-tuts him, his dad (Skarsgard) and little sister when they say the ‘wrong’ things because in their perfect world, their entire lexicon is monitored by the seemingly benevolent Chief Elder (Streep).

Emotions are excised from daily life and townsfolk are even told what time to go to sleep. All of this is done because it is believed a machinelike existence will keep mankind’s ills (wars, famine, deforestation, etc.) away from them. The Elder assigns people job roles in the manner of an assembly line sorting products. After Jonas is given his important role, the Receiver (Bridges, suitably grizzled) has to pass on these memories to Jonas.

Jonas is established as free-thinking, curious and even rebellious, and so the idea of giving insightful and revelatory thoughts to someone who has the potential to upset the carefully constructed order of things seems puzzling and even illogical. Despite the impressive cast (Taylor Swift has a cameo), performances are uneven. Bridges and Streep stand out but the others are somewhat unconvincing.

Conceptually, there are also bits reminiscent of *The Matrix* some Orwellian Big Brother ideology and dashes of *Divergent* in an overall attempt to convey the film’s core message – do we sacrifice pain and pleasure in the quest to attain a ‘perfect’ existence?

  • KRISTEN STEWART GETS SENSUAL WITH FEMALE CO-STAR

KRISTEN STEWART GETS SENSUAL WITH FEMALE CO-STAR

Actress Kristen Stewart’s latest magazine shots with her “Clouds Of Sils Maria” co-star Juliette Binoche are snug and sensual. For the September edition of Germany’s Interview magazine, the duo have struck an intriguing pose accentuated by their wet hairstyles and smoky eye makeup.

The headline is rightly chosen – “Exclusive. Wild. Glamorous.” In the magazine, the co-stars have spoken about their new film, and Binoche has said she researched Stewart prior to working with her on-set. “Of course I googled you,” Binoche said while addressing to Stewart. “I needed to know whom I am supposed to meet and play with.

I also watched ‘On The Road’ and skipped ‘Twilight’. Although I have to admit that the first time I ever saw you was on my daughter’s walls,” she added. In “Clouds Of Sils Maria”, Stewart’s character plays Binoche’s assistant. The ladies’ close-knit relationship often blurs the lines between platonic and romantic. The film will release in the US Dec 1.

The treasure of the Beloved Naam is within the True Guru; in His Mercy, he pours the Ambrosial Nectar into my mouth. || Pause || The Beloved Himself is in all the oceans and lands; whatever God does, comes to pass. The Beloved brings nourishment to all; there is no other than Him. The Beloved Himself plays, and whatever He Himself does, comes to pass.

    || 2 || The Beloved Himself, all by Himself, is immaculate and pure; He Himself is immaculate and pure. The Beloved Himself determines the value of all; whatever He does comes to pass. The Beloved Himself is unseen – He cannot be seen; He Himself causes us to see.

    || 3 || The Beloved Himself is deep and profound and unfathomable; there is no other as great as He. The Beloved Himself enjoys every heart; He is contained within every woman and man. O Nanak, the Beloved is pervading everywhere, but He is hidden; through the Guru, He is revealed.

    || 4 || 3 || SORAT’H, FOURTH MEHL: God Himself is the balance scale, He Himself is the weigher, and He Himself weighs with the weights. He Himself is the banker, He Himself is the trader, and He Himself makes the trades. The Beloved Himself fashioned the world, and He Himself counter-balances it with a gram.

    || 1 || My mind meditates on the Lord, Har, Har, and finds peace. The Name of the Beloved Lord, Har, Har, is a treasure; the Perfect Guru has made it seem sweet to me. || Pause || The Beloved Himself is the earth, and He Himself is the water; He Himself acts, and causes others to act. The Beloved Himself issues His Commands, and keeps the water and the land bound down. The Beloved Himself instills the Fear of God; He binds the tiger and the goat together.

The Beloved Lord Himself, all by Himself, permeates them, and because of the Fear of God, the fire cannot burn the wood. The Beloved Himself kills and revives; all draw the breath of life, given by Him.

    || 3 || The Beloved Himself is power and presence; He Himself engages us in our work. As the Beloved makes me walk, I walk, as it pleases my Lord God. The Beloved Himself is the musician, and the musical instrument; servant Nanak vibrates His vibration.

He Himself is the pen, and He Himself is the scribe; He Himself inscribes His inscription.

Those very fortunate ones are in ecstasy night and day; through the Perfect Guru, they obtain the profit of the Lord’s Name. || Pause || The Beloved Himself is the milk-maid and Krishna; He Himself herds the cows in the woods. The Beloved Himself is the blue-skinned, handsome one; He Himself plays on His flute. The Beloved Himself took the form of a child, and destroyed Kuwalia-peer, the mad elephant.

    || 2 || The Beloved Himself sets the stage; He performs the plays, and He Himself watches them. The Beloved Himself assumed the form of the child, and killed the demons Chandoor, Kansa and Kaysee. The Beloved Himself, by Himself, is the embodiment of power; He shatters the power of the fools and idiots.

    || 3 || The Beloved Himself created the whole world. In His hands He holds the power of the ages. The Beloved Himself puts the chains around their necks; as God pulls them, must they go.Whoever harbors pride shall be destroyed, O Beloved; meditating on the Lord, Nanak is absorbed in devotional worship.

    || 4 || 6 || SORAT’H, FOURTH MEHL, DU-TUKAS: Separated from the Lord for countless lifetimes, the self-willed manmukh suffers in pain, engaged in acts of egotism. Beholding the Holy Saint, I found God; O Lord of the Universe, I seek Your Sanctuary.

    || 1 || The Love of God is very dear to me.When I joined the Sat Sangat, the Company of the Holy People, the Lord, the embodiment of peace, came into my heart. || Pause || You dwell, hidden, within my heart day and night, Lord; but the poor fools do not understand Your Love. Meeting with the Almighty True Guru, God was revealed to me; I sing His Glorious Praises, and reflect upon His Glories.

    || 2 || As Gurmukh, I have become enlightened; peace has come, and evil-mindedness has been dispelled from my mind. Understanding the relationship of the individual soul with God, I have found peace, in Your Sat Sangat, Your True Congregation, O Lord.

    || 3 || Those who are blessed by Your Kind Mercy, meet the Almighty Lord, and find the Guru. Nanak has found the immeasurable, celestial peace; night and day, he remains awake to the Lord, the Master of the Forest of the Universe.

    || 4 || 7 || SORAT’H, FOURTH MEHL: The inner depths of my mind are pierced by love for the Lord; I cannot live without the Lord. Just as the fish dies without water, I die without the Lord’s Name. || 1 || O my God, please bless me with the water of Your Name. I beg for Your Name, deep within myself, day and night; through the Name, I find peace. || Pause || The song-bird cries out for lack of water – without water, its thirst cannot be quenched. The Gurmukh obtains the water of celestial bliss, and is rejuvenated, blossoming forth through the blessed Love of the Lord.

    || 2 || The self-willed manmukhs are hungry, wandering around in the ten directions; without the Name, they suffer in pain. They are born, only to die, and enter into reincarnation again; in the Court of the Lord, they are punished.

    || 3 || But if the Lord shows His Mercy, then one comes to sing His Glorious Praises; deep within the nucleus of his own self, he finds the sublime essence of the Lord’s elixir. The Lord has become Merciful to meek Nanak, and through the Word of the Shabad, his desires are quenched.

    || 4 || 8 || SORAT’H, FOURTH MEHL, PANCH-PADAS: If one eats the uneatable, then he becomes a Siddha, a being of perfect spirituality; through this perfection, he obtains wisdom. When the arrow of the Lord’s Love pierces his body, then his doubt is eradicated.

    || 1 || O my Lord of the Universe, please bless Your humble servant with glory. Under Guru’s Instructions, enlighten me with the Lord’s Name, that I may dwell forever in Your Sanctuary. || Pause || This whole world is engrossed in coming and going; O my foolish and ignorant mind, be mindful of the Lord. O Dear Lord, please, take pity upon me, and unite me with the Guru, that I may merge in the Lord’s Name.

    || 2 || Only one who has it knows God; he alone has it, to whom God has given it – so very beautiful, unapproachable and unfathomable. Through the Perfect Guru, the unknowable is known. || 3 || Only one who tastes it knows it, like the mute, who tastes the sweet candy, but cannot speak of it. The jewel is concealed, but it is not concealed, even though one may try to conceal it.

    || 4 || Everything is Yours, O Inner-knower, Searcher of hearts; You are the Lord God of all. He alone receives the gift, unto whom You give it; O servant Nanak, there is no one else.

    || 5 || 9 || SORAT’H, FIFTH MEHL, FIRST HOUSE, TI-TUKAS: ONE UNIVERSAL CREATOR GOD. BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU: Who should I ask? Who should I worship? All were created by Him. Whoever appears to be the greatest of the great, shall ultimately be mixed with the dust. The Fearless, Formless Lord, the Destroyer of Fear bestows all comforts, and the nine treasures.

    || 1 || O Dear Lord, Your gifts alone satisfy me.Why should I praise the poor helpless man? Why should I feel subservient to him? || Pause || All things come to one who meditates on the Lord; the Lord satisfies his hunger. The Lord, the Giver of peace, bestows such wealth, that it can never be exhausted. I am in ecstasy, absorbed in celestial peace; the True Guru has united me in His Union.

  • THE RAMAYANA

    THE RAMAYANA

contined from vol 8 issue 32

And the men from distant hamlets poured within the city wall,
From the confines of the empire,
north and south and west and east,
Came to see the consecration and to share the royal feast! And the rolling tide of nations raised their voices loud and high,
Like the tide of sounding ocean when the full moon lights the sky,
And Ayodhya thronged by people from the hamlet , mart and lea,
Was tumultuous like the ocean thronged by creatures of the sea!

    INTRIGUE

In the inner palace chamber stood the proud and peerless queen,
With a mother’s joy Kaikeyi gaily watched the festive scene,
But with deep and deadly hatred Manthara, her nurse and maid,
Marked the city bright with banners, and in scornful accents said: “Take thy presents back, Kaikeyi,
for they ill befit the clay, And when clouds of sorrow darken,
ill beseems thee to be gay, And thy folly moves my laughter though an anguish wakes my sigh,
For a gladness stirs thy bosom when thy greatest woo is nigh! Who that hath a woman’s wisdom, who that is a prudent wife.
Smiles in joy when prouder rival triumphs in the race of life,
How can hapless Queen Kaikeyi greet this deed of darkness done,
When the favoured Queen Kausalya wins the empire for her son?
Know the truth, O witless woman! Bharat is unmatched in fame,
Rama, deep and darkly jealous, dreads thy Bharat’s rival claim,
Younger Lakshman with devotion doth on eldest Rama wait,
Young Satrughna with affection follows Bharat’s lofty fate,
Rama dreads no rising danger from the twins,
    the youngest-born,
But thy Bharat’s claims and virtues fill his jealous heart with scorn! Trust me,
queen, thy Bharat’s merits are too well and widely known,
And he stands too near and closely by a rival brother’s throne,
Rama hath a wolf-like wisdom and a fang to reach the foe,
And I tremble for thy Bharat,
Heaven avert untimely woe! Happy is the Queen Kausalya,
they will soon anoint her son,
When on Pushya’s constellation gaily rides to-morrow’s moon,
Happy is the Queen Kausalya in her regal pomp and state,
And Kaikeyi like a bond-slave must upon her rival wait! Wilt thou do her due obeisance as we humble women do,
Will thy proud and princely Bharat as his brother’s henchman go,
    Will thy Bharat’s gentle consort,
    fairest princess in this land,
In her tears and in her anguish wait on Sita’s proud command?
With a woman’s scornful anger Manthara proclaimed her grief,
With a mother’s love for Rama thus Kaikeyi answered brief: “What inspires thee,
wicked woman, thus to rail in bitter tone,
    Shall not Rama,
best and eldest, fill his father’s royal throne,
What alarms thee, crooked woman, in the happy rites begun,
Shall not Rama guard his brothers as a father guards his son?
And when Rama’s reign is over, shall not Gods my Bharat speed,
And by law and ancient custom shall not younger son succeed,
In the present bliss of Rama and in Bharat’s future hope,
What offends thee, senseless woman, wherefore dost thou idly mope?
Dear is Rama as my Bharat, ever duteous in his ways,
Rama honours Queen Kausalya, loftier honour to me pays,
Rama’s realm is Bharat’s kingdom, ruling partners they shall prove,
For himself than for his brothers Rama owns no deeper love!” Scorn and anger shook her person and her bosom heaved a sigh, As in wilder,
fiercer accents Manthara thus made reply: What insensate rage or madness clouds thy heart and blinds thine eye, Courting thus thy own disaster,
courting danger dread and high, What dark folly clouds thy vision to the workings of thy foe,
Heedless thus to seek destruction and to sink in gulf of woe? Know, fair queen,
    by law and custom,
son ascends the throne of pride,
    Rama’s son succeedeth Rama,
    luckless Bharat steps aside,
Brothers do not share a kingdom, nor can one by one succeed,
Mighty were the civil discord if such custom were decreed! For to stop all war and tumult,
    thus the ancient laws ordain,
    Eldest son succeeds his father,
    younger children may not reign,
    Bharat barred from Rama’s empire,
vainly decked with royal grace, Friendless, joyless, long shall wander,
alien from his land and race! Thou hast home the princely Bharat,
nursed him from thy gentle breast,
To a queen and to a mother need a prince’s claims be pressed,
To a thoughtless heedless mother must I Bharat’s virtues plead,
Must the Queen Kaikeyi witness Queen Kausalya’s son succeed?
Trust thy old and faithful woman who bath nursed thee, youthful queen,
And in great and princely houses many darksome deeds hath seen,
Trust my word, the wily Rama for his spacious empire’s good,
Soon will banish friendless Bharat and secure his peace with blood! Thou hast sent the righteous Bharat to thy ancient father’s land,
And Satrughna young an valiant doth beside his brother stand, Young in years and generous-hearted,
they will grow in mutual love,
As the love of elder Rama doth in Lakshman’s bosom move,
    Young companions grow in friendship,
and our ancient legends tell, Weeds protect a forest monarch which the woodman’s axe would fell,
Crownéd Rama unto Lakshman will a loving brother prove,
But for Bharat and Satrughna, Rama’s bosom owns no love, And a danger thus ariseth if the elder wins the throne,
Haste thee, heedless Queen Kaikeyi, save the younger and thy son! Speak thy mandate to thy husband,
let thy Bharat rule at home,
In the deep and pathless jungle let the banished Rama roam, This will please thy ancient father and thy father’s kith and kin,
This will please the righteous people,
Bharat knows no guile or sin! Speak thy mandate to thy husband, win thy son a happy fate,
Doom him not to Rama’s service or his unrelenting hate,
Let not Rama in his rancour shed a younger brother’s blood,
As the lion slays the tiger in the deep and echoing wood! With the magic of thy beauty thou hast won thy monarch’s heart,

  • HOW RED CAN YOUR WALLS GET

HOW RED CAN YOUR WALLS GET

It’s said to be the colour of passion, romance, excitement and danger. Red, more importantly, is one of the few colours that can dramatically brighten up the mood of the entire room. The colour is a bright spark that can liven up any interior.

However, if it’s overdone, the room will definitely look garish. Hence, red, in any shade, is best used sparingly. How much of the house or the room one decides to paint in the colour reflects the personality of the home owner. Unfortunately, not too many people are comfortable using this colour excessively. The reason? Red is also famed as a dangerous colour, one that can make people irritable and invoke feelings of rage and hostility.

Hence, one option is to use it on a single wall and then accessorise (upholstery and decor) using the colour or to go in for a dual tone painting style using two complementing shades of the colour. So, if you’ve been debating about getting your bedroom or living room painted in this awesome colour, here’s what you need to keep in mind.

    Choose the right shade

Like most colours, red comes in a number of shades ranging from a light blushing red to deep crimson, from a rustic village red to dark burgundy and from a tomato red to a cherry red among others. It’s most important to choose the right shade. While at this task, apart from your personal favourite, keep in mind the furniture and other fixtures that are already in the room or the kind of decor you intend for the room.

Colour experts suggest that one should choose the shade depending on the mood one wants to build in the room. Red is an ideal colour for the interiors as it reacts beautifully with yellow or white light. Another plus point of this colour is that it’s one of those rich colours that don’t tend to fade out very fast. When using it in a room, painting one wall red will give the room a chic feel while if it’s drama and fun you’re looking for, paint the whole room in the colour.

    Sample it

These days, most paint brands offer sample packs that one can take home and try out on a wall. A tip here: sample the colour in both, a bright and a dark part of the room. This way you’ll know exactly how the colour looks at all times of the day and in both, natural and artificial light. Remember, how a colour looks in the morning and in bright sunlight is not what it will look in the dark and with the effect of artificial light.

Keep the samples on for a few days and observe the colour under different settings. The shade you fell in love with at the showroom may in fact, look quite disastrous on your wall and you may need to go in for a lighter or darker one.

    Prepare the room

Before painting a wall, you need to use a base primer. Going in for a white primer is not always a good idea. Instead, as experts suggest, use the primer as advised by the paint brand that you are using to get the desired effect of the shade.

Also, while painting, colour is bound to splash on the floor. And it being red, the stains will be difficult to clean or hide. Hence, carefully cover the edge of the floor using sheets of newspaper, old linen, sackcloth or even masking tape. Remember to cover a good portion of the edge to avoid post-painting hassles.

    Paint it up

Now that you’ve started the painting process, remember you’ll need to give the walls at least two coats of the colour. In some cases, you may even need a third coat to get the desired shade of the colour, be prepared for this. It’s also important to allow the paint to dry between coats to ensure a smooth finish.

  • LOSE THAT PAUNCH IN JUST 10 DAYS

LOSE THAT PAUNCH IN JUST 10 DAYS

Follow these easy-to-do tips and get rid of your tummy in 10 days… Courtesy our partyhopping and binge-eating sprees in the last couple of months, thanks to the festive season, almost all of us are battling that unwanted bulge. In fact, fitting into our old dresses and slim-fit jeans is almost like a challenge. But worry not. Here are some simple tips, which, if followed properly, could help you get rid of your paunch in flat 10 days.

    Drink lots of water

Water is essential for our system, as around 70% of our body constitutes water. However, too much of anything does not work. So, have around 2.5 to 3.5 litres of water every day. And make sure you avoid drinking cold water. Normal or lukewarm water will help you stay slimmer. Water flushes out toxins and hydrates the system. If you don’t like water, sip on herbal and green tea. Deepshikha Agarwal, sports nutritionist, advocates going the antioxidant way with this. “This is a delicious way to include anti-oxidants in your diet. It can work wonders for your immune and digestive system.”

    Cut down on carbs

Many believe that going on a zerocarbs diet will help in a miraculous way. While one should cut down on it for quick results, the no-carbs way is a strict no-no. Pooja Makhija, clinical nutritionist, explains, “Carbs are our energy givers and should contribute 65-70% of the total calorie intake in a day. One can only improve stamina if one includes carbs in every meal, every day! Weight loss will also follow suit when the body is fuelled optimally to be able to burn fat.”

    Increase protein intake

Have baked chicken or fish with steamed vegetables for lunch and dinner. Skimmed milk and milk products work too. Having a proteinrich diet makes you feel full for longer. Make sure you include egg whites in your breakfast. Have small portions and ensure that you have at least five to six meals.

    Stay away from fad diets

Crash diets can be extremely harmful, so stay away from them completely. Dr Smita Naram, Ayurvedic physician, says, “A diet with a combination of 30% protein, 60% vegetables and 10% carbohydrates is most beneficial for reducing weight.” Eating regular food every two-three hours (don’t go for snacking in between) is great when it comes to losing weight.

    Eat slowly

Eat slowly and stop eating when you are about 70 to 80% full. Do not overeat. Eating fast and gulping down food results eating much more than our body needs.

Walk, and then walk some more

Go for a 45-minute brisk walk in the morning or evening. Wear clothes that are not too tight and comfortable shoes that are meant for walking. Start with a 30-minute walk and extend it to 45 minutes or one hour. Do this for 10 days without fail.

    Crunches can save your day

Don’t have time for the gym? Just do some warm-up exercises and then target your paunch — do crunches (See box). Do this everyday — twice a day if possible. (After all, you want to lose that paunch in 10 days, don’t you?) Throughout the day, whether you are sitting or walking around, make sure that you pull in your stomach and keep your back straight.

    Take up a de-stressing activity

Stress and depression can lead to a lot of unwarranted emotional eating. So, de-stress. Take up a favourite activity — do some meditation, read a book, watch some romantic comedies, play with your dog or take up a yoga or dance class.

    Stay away from temptation

Every time you almost give up and reach for a chocolate bar, remind yourself what you really want — looking hot in a sexy LBD or being flabby and fat and hiding inside a loose ill-fitted outfit. And behave accordingly.

    Basic crunches

Lie down on your exercise mat. Bend your knees and keep it parallel to the floor. Now put your hands behind your head and exhale and lift up your shoulder blades off the floor while you contract your stomach and reach for your knees.

    Get more out of crunches

Do bicycle crunches. Paddle each of your legs in the air while you do the crunches.
Ban the following completely for the next 10 days:
    – Red meat
    – Sweets
    – Canned foods
    – Junk foods like burger, pizza, pasta etc
    – Cold aerated drinks
    – Canned juices (even the ones that say ‘healthy’ on the pack)
    – All kinds of outside food
    – Avoid over-eating

  • WANT TO QUIT SMOKING? TURN TO TEXTING

WANT TO QUIT SMOKING? TURN TO TEXTING

Interactive and persuasive text messages received on your phone can motivate you to kick the butt, says a new study which found that more than 11 percent of smokers who used a text-messaging programme to help them quit did so.

The subjects remained smoke-free at the end of a sixmonth study as compared to just five percent of controls, according to researchers at George Washington University. “Text messages seem to give smokers the constant reminders they need to stay focused on quitting,” said Lorien C. Abroms, lead author of the study.

Text-messaging programmes, like “Text2Quit” work by sending advice, reminders and tips that help smokers resist the craving for a cigarette and stick to a quit date. More than 75,000 people in the United States have enrolled in the “Text2Quit” programme and enrollment is on the rise.

Abroms and her colleagues recruited 503 smokers on the internet and randomised them to receive either a text-messaging programme called “Text2Quit” or selfhelp material aimed at getting smokers to quit. The text messages in the “Text2Quit” programme are interactive and give smokers advice but they also allow participants to ask for more help or to reset a quit date if they need more time.

Smokers who have trouble fighting off an urge can text in and get a tip or a game that might help distract them until the craving goes away, Abroms said. At the end of six months, the researchers found that people using the text-messaging programme had a much higher likelihood of quitting compared to the control group. The text-messaging programmes can provide an important boost for people struggling with a tobacco habit, the study concluded.

  • Calcium-rich foods for your toddler

    Calcium-rich foods for your toddler

Calcium is definitely essential for the healthy development of your toddler’s muscles, bones and teeth. While milk is the main source of this mineral, here are some other calcium-rich foods that you can include in your kid’s diet.

    ORANGES

These citrus fruits are not only rich in calcium but also in vitamin D, that helps absorb the mineral in the body. Ensure that you remove the seeds from this fruit before feeding it to your toddler. Or opt for some fresh orange juice.

    YOGURT

Yogurt is recommended for those kids who turn their faces away at the sight of milk. Serve it as a dip with sliced fruit or go for the flavoured ones. Other dairy products, including cheese, are also a good source of calcium.

    LEAFY VEGGIES

Green, leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, peas and spinach, contain good amounts of calcium too. Give your kid some spinach soup regularly.

BHUTAN REVISITED: BALANCING MODERNITY WITH TRADITION

Like a giant Brahminy kite swooping down on its prey, Drukair’s Airbus, plumed in the national colours of orange and yellow, veered sharply to the left over the Himalayas to head for an unexpected v-shaped opening in the mountains. To the collective gasps of its passengers – who had barely recovered from the excitement of flying alongside the world’s mountain peaks, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Jumolhari, Dhaulagiri and Makalu among others – it emerged through the gap to present a vista that was both panoramic and breathtaking.

A long strip of asphalt beckoned below in a welcoming carpet at the quaint Paro airport, the gateway to the mystical kingdom of Bhutan. It was flanked on either side by verdant slopes of cypress, pine and oak, dotted in the foothills by pretty traditional cottages and chhordens (Buddhist stupas), with their fluttering white flags, and the sparkling chu (river) that gives company a good way during the one-hour journey from Paro to capital Thimphu.

    9

Welcome to the country often described as “the last Shangri La on earth”, that Lonely Planet calls one of the world’s most enigmatic and intriguing nations. “Felicitations to the Royal Couple on their Wedding”, greeted a giant billboard with a coloured photo of HRH Jigme Kesar Namgyel Wangchuk, the fifth king of Bhutan, and his wife Gyaltusuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuk, as one set foot in a land whose benevolent rulers have chosen to measure their people’s well being through the unique concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) rather than the universal metric of Gross National Product (GNP).

Though the couple are observing their first wedding anniversary this month, the kingdom – it now calls itself a democratic constitutional monarchy – is still to get over the international attention it got when the world media came to cover the royal wedding last Oct 13. Immigration is a breeze (Indians require no visa but on the whole tourism has to be of high-value – other foreigners have to pay $200 each and travel in groups – ecologically friendly and cultural acceptable) and soon one is settled on the road to Thimphu in one of the Maruti Suzukis or Hyundai Santros that seem to predominate the 66,000 odd private vehicle population of the country.

Although the snaking road to Thimphu is full of hairpin bends, no one honks because, as our driver put it sagely, the mountain gods “would feel disturbed”. Thimphu has changed since the time I was last here two decades ago. The city – which resembles an Indian hill town – of about 50,000 people is much more crowded, has many more markets, hotels and restaurants, and there is new construction everywhere, although everyone has to adhere to traditional Bhutanese architectural norms – white-washed rectangular buildings with sloping, crested roofs and gilded windows and all carrying the local icons of dragon and lotus.

There is also the ubiquitous phallic symbol dangling from the eaves of Bhutanese homes to ward off malevolent spirits. In the words of a Bhutanese writer, “phallic rituals appear everywhere in our daily lives, marking events that range from the mundane to the momentous. “The birth of a calf, for instance, the purchase of a new truck, or the augury of a brand new home all merit a nod to the preeminent phallus.” Bhutan is a deeply spiritual nation of nearly 700,000 people whose history stretches back to the origins of Buddhism and who have developed a unique identity, derived largely from a religious and cultural heritage, designed for a harmonious evolution of man with nature.

Such is the Bhutanese obsession with retaining their pristine lifestyle that the biggest media debate a few months ago was about the installation of the first traffic light at the busiest downtown crossing. Ultimately, the traditionalists, backed by the king, prevailed and the lights were dismantled. Today, a policeman directs traffic under a crafted canopy, traffic is orderly and noncacophonous and Bhutan, the land of the thunder dragon, continues with its delicate balance between tradition and modernity.

5 INDIAN FIRMS AMONG FORBES’ MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANIES

NEW YORK (TIP): Five Indian companies, including Hindustan Unilever and Tata Consultancy Services, are among Forbes’ list of the world’s 100 most innovative companies that investors think are most likely to “generate big, new growth ideas”. The annual ‘World’s Most Innovative Companies’ list, released yesterday, has been topped by California-based global cloud computing company Salesforce for the fourth year in a row.

The five Indian companies on the list are consumer goods company Hindustan Unilever, which is ranked 14th, followed by IT major Tata Consultancy Services (57), construction services firm Larsen & Toubro (58), pharma major Sun Pharma Industries (65) and Bajaj Auto (96). Hindustan Unilever recorded an innovation premium of 54.7% . Forbes said the innovation premium is a measure of how much investors have bid up the stock price of a company above the value of its existing business based on expectations of future innovative results like new products, services and markets.

The innovation premium of TCS was 39.58% and the Mumbai-based company had a market cap of $71.25 billion as of May 2014. Larsen and Toubro had an innovation premium of 39.4% and had a market cap of $19.81 billion. Sun Pharma had an innovation premium of 38.34% and a market cap of $19.88 billion. Bajaj Auto recorded an innovation premium of 31.73% and a market cap of $10 billion. Salesforce, with a market cap of $35.87 billion, had an innovation premium of 75.9% and continued its reign as Forbes’ most innovative company for the fourth straight year. “A key to Salesforce’s success has been its ability to move into bigger companies, selling to enterprise-class large customers who require more modifications and attention than a small or medium business,” Forbes said.

The other companies making up the top five on the list are Connecticut-based biotech firm Alexion Pharmaceuticals (2), British semi-conductor company ARM Holdings (3), fast moving consumer goods company Unilever Indonesia (4) and New York-based biopharmaceutical company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (5). The US was home to a majority of the companies on the list with 41 firms headquartered in the country, followed by Europe with 29 companies.

  • DENA BANK, OBC HIT BY RS 436CR FRAUD

DENA BANK, OBC HIT BY RS 436CR FRAUD

MUMBAI (TIP): The banking industry has been shaken by the discovery of a fixed deposit scam where Dena Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) are the latest victims to be defrauded of over Rs 256 crore and Rs 180 crore, respectively. The finance ministry has ordered a forensic audit in these state-owned banks where proceeds of institutional fixed deposits were diverted on the basis of forged documents.

Both the banks have complained to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is looking into the matter. Speaking to newspersons in Mumbai on Wednesday, finance secretary G S Sandhu said the government has ordered disciplinary action to be taken against those who are held accountable in the fixed deposit scam and the banks have already suspended a few officials.

Dena Bank shares closed 5% down while the OBC stock lost nearly 3.5% by close of Wednesday’s trade on the BSE. In a statement issued here, Dena Bank said that its Malabar Hill Branch received bulk term deposits from various entities and government organizations between January 30, 2014, and May 5, 2014. Subsequently, term deposits amounting to Rs 256.69 crore were pledged to the bank by the same signatories who placed the fixed deposits and the pledge was used to obtain overdraft facilities of Rs 223.25 crore. The funds were then surreptitiously transferred out of the bank.

The modus operandi was similar in the case of OBC too. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) had opened a fixed deposit with the bank by remitting Rs 110 crore through an electronic transfer in February this year. The deposit was followed by a faxed request to transfer the funds to the current account of a third-party — Padmavati International. The bank then received a second transfer of Rs 70 crore from JNPT followed by another request to transfer funds to the current account of Padmavati International.

The bank subsequently received enquiries from the port trust about non-receipt of the term deposit certificate. Investigations by the bank showed later that the branch had transferred funds received to the third-party account directly based on the fax request. Upon detecting the fraud, the bank took measures to recover the money from the third-party account and seized Rs 110 crore lying with other banks even as Rs 64 crore remained untraced.

Banking sources said the bulk deposits were brought in by middle-men and their role in the fraud is being looked into. Speaking to newspersons, Ashwani Kumar, chairman, Dena Bank, said that the bank has filed a complaint and kept the regulator informed. Kumar said that the bank plans to make provisions for Rs 218 crore for possible losses arising out of the fraud. He said that the bank has already provided for Rs 54 crore in the first quarter and the rest of the amount would be provided for during the course of the year.

  • Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) in the court of Indian Americans

Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) in the court of Indian Americans

By The Indian Panorama Investigative Team

Federation of Indian Associations, NY/NJ/CT (FIA) has been making tall claims for decades under its Chairman for life Ramesh Patel with his handpicked kitchen cabinet that “FIA” is a representative organization of Indian Americans and that it is the largest umbrella organization of Indian Associations in this part of USA.

It is a claim that The Indian Panorama had contested two years ago and is being contested today, too, in the court of Indian Americans. And we will leave to our readers to judge for themselves if the claims of FIA have any merit.

The Indian Panorama investigative team has collected information and evidence which belie the tall claims of the FIA leadership, which consists of a handful of people from one community and one region.

Today,we are more than convinced than we were two years ago, that the FIA is not a representative organization of Indian Americans. And we will like to add that its ways of working and the accounting practices are mysterious and confusing, to say the least, as will be evidenced from the Tax Returns it submitted with the IRS over the last couple of years. We will be happy to make available copies of Tax returns to any reader wanting them. Just drop an email to editor@theindianpanorama.news.

FIA’s IRS Tax returns are nothing but accounting tricks, fiction, hocus-pocus, misleading statements, half truths, omissions and appear to be, at times, outright lies. FIA has been filing IRS Tax returns claiming that they have “0” (No) Voting Members, “0” Independent Voting Members, “0” Volunteers and “0” numbers of employees. But since 2004 to 2012 they have collected $2,293,886.00 from public, private enterprises and Government of India Enterprises to organize “Celebrity Parades” to parade themselves, their family, friends, supporters, politicians and Bollywood stars in the name of India Day Parade to insult India and every Indian around the world.

Please consider: Where are the 100 organizations that the FIA claims are its members when Tax Returns mention “0” (No) Voting Members, “0” Independent Voting Members, “0” Volunteers and “0” numbers of employees?

If one pays close attention to the parade expenses; it clearly indicates expenses have been fudged to match revenue and some of the expenses do not make any sense. Some of the expenses are fluctuating big time like “Occupancy” (with no definition or explanation) $29,897.00 in 2008 dropped to $7,147.00 in 2009, only to go up to $56,212.00 in 2011 and again dropping to $29,271.00 in 2012.

Travel Expenses in 2009 for $6,418.00 went up to $33,423.00 to drop down to $ 22,320.00 in 2012. (No explanation who traveled and to where). The performer’s fee has gone up from $0 in 2008 to $63,856 in 2012. The “Other Expenses” have gone up almost 4 times from $21,053.00 in 2008 to $82,595.00 in 2012; whereas the Assets have gone up from $ 47,741.00 to $ 48,832.00 only.

Moreover when FIA could do a Parade for $185,991.00 in 2008 how it is that they spent $ 357,239 in 2011? Though comparisons are said to be odious, it would be in the fitness of things to make one here. The Sikh Day Parade with the same or more number of Floats and Bands from the same sources cost only $85,000; that too, with more than plenty of free food and drinks for participants and general public from all walks of life along the entire parade route and at the end of the parade.

Another distinct aspect. In 2006 FIA collected a record $425,231.00 from the public that dropped to $169,182.00 in 2009, to go up again to $332,220.00 in 2012. The FIA revenue does not include the Bollywood Stars sponsored by an organization or individual and Free Air Tickets from Air India and free media coverage and publicity from their main media sponsor.

In IRS returns FIA is also admitting that they do not get their IRS returns audited or reviewed independently and for FIA’s books and records, official address, Principle Officer, every time they are using different name and addresses and surprisingly on their website they have New York office address. Amazingly after removing Nirav Mehta a proclaimed economic offender from India as a Trustee in July-Aug 2013; FIA on 10-15-13 on IRS Form 8868 for extension, mentioned that “The Books are in the care of “Nirav Mehta, 163 Washington Valley Rd,Warren, NJ 07059 with “No” telephone and Fax numbers.

NOTE: From the above figures readers can draw their own conclusions. In 2006 FIA collected $425,231. In 2006 from the public and Government of India enterprises that does not include if the Bollywood Stars has been sponsored by an organization; why the revenue dropped. More over FIA could do a parade for $185,991.00 in 2008 why they spent $357,239.00 in 2011. That is also a fact that Sikh Day Parade with the same or larger number of Floats and Bands cost only $85,000.00 that too with more than plenty of free foods, drinks and snacks.

The figures for individual parades and expenses under different heads are also an eye opener. Someone in FIA is knowingly and deliberately moving expenses from one head to another head year after year and creating new expense account names to mislead the public and IRS.

NOTE: Where is the transparency in collecting money from the renters for Booths and Floats? It is a well known fact that there are vendors who can sell services with no local taxes and credit card fee if payment is strictly cash. Also there are organizations/individuals who want to be in media/public limelight and for photo-ops with Bollywood celebrities and politicians do not hesitate to make cash donations. More over this is another open secret that individuals or companies are paid 25%-30% commissions for raising funds/donations for FIA.

This expense is no where mentioned in Tax Returns of FIA. We have placed in the hands of our readers the information that the FIA should have made public on its own. After all, it is a not-for profit organization and enjoys privileges under section 501 (C). Also, at the same time, it is mandatory for FIA to be in compliance with the legal provisions that go with the 501 (C) privileges, which, to our understanding, the FIA has failed to do.

Hence, IRS will be within its legal right to order a thorough investigation in to the financial dealings of FIA. And, we hope, IRS will not close its eyes to various kinds of violations that FIA might have committed. As honest citizens of this great democratic nation, it is the duty of all residents of USA not to let an individual or an organization violate with impunity the laws of the land.

Our readers have the moral right to question FIA leadership on the functioning of the organization. We will welcome comments from our readers on the issue. We will be happy to answer any question related to the issue and to address any issue related with the subject. Please email your comment/ question to editor@theindianpanorama.news.

To recap, the broader questions are:
    1. Is FIA a representative organization of Indian Americans?
    2. Is FIA a democratic organization?
    3. Should a coterie of handful persons from one community and one region control the levers of an organization
claiming to be “an umbrella organization of over hundred organizations”?
    5. Should India Day Parade, to celebrate the nation’s proudest moment, be left in the hands of a coterie?
    6. Should Indian banks, Air India, the loss making elephantine national carrier, with corrupt officials, having vested interests at the helm of affairs here, India Tourism and other such agencies of government of India waste the Indian taxpayers’ money in funding the coterie?
    7. Shouldn’t the IRS order a thorough investigation in to the financial dealings of FIA?
    8. Shouldn’t other investigative agencies step in, if any other serious offence of criminal nature, surface against a member of the coterie controlling FIA?

    Now, you be the judge.

  • Standard Chartered fined $300 million over money laundering controls

Standard Chartered fined $300 million over money laundering controls

NEW YORK (TIP): New York state’s banking regulator hit Standard Chartered Bank with a $300 million fine and restrictions on its dollar-clearing business on Tuesday for not detecting possible money laundering. The New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) said the British bank’s internal compliance systems had failed to detect or act on a large number of “potentially high-risk transactions” mostly originating from Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

The new punishment came two years after the bank paid US regulators $667 million to settle charges it violated US sanctions by handling thousands of money transactions involving Iran, Myanmar, Libya and Sudan. A DFS monitor appointed in 2012 to keep an eye on the bank discovered that it had not detected the allegedly high-risk transactions from Hong Kong and the UAE or reported them as it should have, the department said. “If a bank fails to live up to its commitments, there should be consequences.

That is particularly true in an area as serious as anti-moneylaundering compliance, which is vital to helping prevent terrorism and vile human rights abuses,” said DFS head Benjamin Lawsky. The department did not give any information on the nature of the transactions, or whether they proved to involve laundering or not. In a settlement agreed with the bank, DFS ordered Standard Chartered to halt dollar-clearing operations for unnamed “high-risk retail business clients” of its Hong Kong unit.

The bank is already cutting business with high-risk clients in UAE, but will also not be able to process dollar funds through the United States for them. Its New York branch also is forbidden to take on any clearing or deposit accounts from new customers without the approval of Lawsky’s office.

    ‘Serious blow’

The fine would have a negative impact on the bank’s reputation and international business, independent financial analyst Francis Lun told AFP. “It’s really an oversight on the part of Standard Chartered. They’d already paid a huge penalty still they installed a system that is useless,” Lun said. “It will create tremendous problems with their international clients who cannot settle their accounts in US dollars.

It will be a serious blow to Standard Chartered group’s international business,” Lun said. Standard Chartered is based in London but has traditionally done most of its business in Asia and the Middle East. It said it accepted responsibility and “regrets the deficiencies in the antimoney laundering transaction surveillance system at its New York branch.” It added that it would work with clients in Hong Kong and UAE affected by the DFS requirements “to minimize disruption.” “The group remains fully committed to Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates as key markets,” the bank said.

Hong Kong-listed shares in the bank fell 0.19 percent, to HK$157.8 ($20.36) in afternoon trade, while the Hang Seng Index remained flat. “$300 million isn’t a big number…investors will be fine with this penalty,” Tanrich Securities vice president Jackson Wong said. The action taken against Standard Chartered is part of an ongoing crackdown by New York state and federal authorities on banks, particularly foreign banks with New York branches, for handling money transfers from countries and individuals blacklisted by Washington for political reasons or for their involvement in criminal activities.

  • INDIA DEPLOYS AKASH MISSILES IN NORTHEAST

INDIA DEPLOYS AKASH MISSILES IN NORTHEAST

    NEW DELHI (TIP):
India has begun deploying six Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) squadrons in the northeast to deter Chinese jets, helicopters and drones against any misadventure in the region. Earlier, India based its most potent Sukhoi-30MKI fighters at Tezpur and Chabua. Indian Defence ministry sources on Thursday, August 21 said IAF has started getting deliveries of the six Akash missile squadrons, which can “neutralize” multiple targets at 25-km interception range in all-weather conditions, earmarked for the eastern theatre.

“IAF has deployed the first two Akash squadrons at the Mirage-2000 base in Gwalior and Sukhoi base in Pune. The next six squadrons, as approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security, are to guard against any threat from the northern borders,” said a source. This long-delayed but finally successful induction of the Akash systems, developed by DRDO and manufactured by defence PSU Bharat Dynamics, has also led to scrapping of the protracted discussions to develop the ‘Maitri’ short-range SAMs with France at a cost of around Rs 30,000 crore.

The Akash deployment in the northeast is in tune with the overall plan to progressively achieve “meaningful and credible deterrence” against China along the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control (LAC). While the Indian Navy is currently better placed to take on Chinese warships in the Indian Ocean, the stark military asymmetry with the People’s Liberation Army along the LAC, both in firepower as well as infrastructure, has long worried the Indian security establishment.

The steps being taken now to “deter” China range from development of the over 5,000-km Agni-V inter-continental ballistic missile to raising of the new Army XVII Mountain Strike Corps with over 90,000 soldiers at a cost of Rs 64,678 crore. Then, there is also the border military infrastructure development plan for another Rs 26,155 crore, as reported by TOI earlier. IAF, on its part, has deployed Sukhoi squadrons at Tezpur and Chabua in the eastern sector as well as Bareilly in the middle sector of the LAC.

Both Tezpur and Chabua are also getting their second Sukhoi squadrons, with IAF having inducted over 200 of these 272 fighters contracted from Russia for over $12 billion. The force has also re-activated advanced landing grounds (ALGs) at Nyoma and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh as well as Vijayanagar situated at the tri-junction of India, China and Myanmar in the Changlang district of Arunachal. Similar work is underway at other eastern sector ALGs like Pasighat, Mechuka, Walong, Tuting and Ziro.

The new XVII Corps, which will fully be in place by 2018-2019, will give India muchrequired “quick-reaction ground offensive punch” for the first time against China. All this is considered crucial since China can rapidly deploy 21 fighter squadrons against India with its eight operational airbases in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and some others just north of it.

Moreover, the extensive road and rail links created in TAR ensure Chinese soldiers enjoy numerical superiority against Indian forces in a 3:1 ratio. China, incidentally, has been conducting major exercises with its J-10, Sukhoi-27UBK and Sukhoi-30MKK fighters in the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet plateau in recent times.

MARTIAN STRUCTURE REVEALS SIGNS OF LIFE ON RED PLANET

WASHINGTON (TIP): A new mineral-rich structure discovered from a Martian meteorite has led scientists to believe that there may be niche environments on Mars subsurface that support life. The ovoid structure discovered in the Nakhla Martian meteorite is made of nanocrystalline iron-rich clay and contains a variety of minerals.

It shows evidence of undergoing a past shock event from impact, with resulting melting of the permafrost and mixing of surface and subsurface fluids, researchers said. “The findings illustrate the importance of correlating different types of datasets when attempting to discern whether something in rock is a biosignature indicative of life,” said Sherry L. Cady, editor-in-chief of the journal Astrobiology and chief scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington, DC.

To reach this hypothesis, Elias Chatzitheodoridis from National Technical University of Athens, Greece and Sarah Haigh and Ian Lyon from University of Manchester used modern tools like electron microscopy and spectroscopy to analyse the ovoid structure. Based on the results, they presented the competing hypotheses for how this ovoid was formed, leading to a possible hypothesis that the Red Planet’s subsurface may support support life. “The research strategy revealed a significant amount of information about the potential for life to inhabit the subsurface of Mars,” Cady added.

  • NOW, BEAM YOUR PICTURES TO MARS

NOW, BEAM YOUR PICTURES TO MARS

WASHINGTON (TIP): A US-based space-funding company has launched a new project that will allow you to send messages and pictures to Mars. The company Uwingu in Boulder, Colorado has launched its ‘Beam Me to Mars’ project, inviting people to contribute, for a fee, to a ‘digital shout-out’ that will send messages from Earth to the Red planet. Uwingu and its transmission partner, communications provider Universal Space Network, will use radio telescopes to beam the messages on November 28 at the rate of 1 million bits per second.

The transmission, travelling at the speed of light, will reach the Red planet on that day in just 15 minutes, company representatives said. For comparison, it took the first successful Mars mission, Nasa’s Mariner 4, launched on November 28, 1964 more than seven months to get to the Red planet. ‘Beam Me to Mars’ celebrates Mariner 4’s landmark effort in a new and original way, the company said. The messages won’t be read or recorded by anyone on Mars but they’ll be archived here on Earth, and participants will receive a commemorative certificate. “We want it to inspire people,” said Uwingu CEO Alan Stern, a planetary scientist and former Nasa science chief.

“There has never been an opportunity before for people of Earth to shout out across the solar system their hopes and wishes for space exploration, for the future of mankind – for any of that,” Stern told Space.com. You can beam your name — or someone else’s — to the Red Planet for $4.95. For $9.95, you can contribute a name and a 100-character message, while $19.95 gets you a 1,000-character note. You can also shell out $99 to send a name, a long message and an image of your choice.

  • ‘See-through’ solar panels to provide clear view

‘See-through’ solar panels to provide clear view

WASHINGTON (TIP): Researchers have created new “transparent” solar panels that can create solar energy while also letting people to see-through them. The device has been called transparent luminescent solar concentrator, which could be used on buildings, cell phones, windows and any other device that has a clear surface. The solar harvesting system uses small organic molecules developed by Richard Lunt of MSU’s College of Engineering, and his team to absorb specific non-visible wavelengths of sunlight.

One of the benefits of this new development would be its flexibility. While the technology is at an early stage, it has the potential to be scaled to commercial or industrial applications with an affordable cost. Lunt said more work was needed in order to improve its energy-producing efficiency, as currently it could produce solar conversion efficiency close to 1 percent, but noted they aim to reach efficiencies beyond 5 percent when fully optimized. The best colored LSC has an efficiency of around 7 percent. The research is published in the journal Advanced Optical Materials.

  • NASA GETS RARE GLIMPSE AT BLACK HOLE

NASA GETS RARE GLIMPSE AT BLACK HOLE

Scientists have caught a better-than-ever view of the way that black holes can drag space and time around with them as they spin, a finding that could lead to new understanding of Einstein’s theory of relativity. Nasa’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) captured the effect when a compact source of X-rays, known as the corona, moved towards the black hole and was pulled into it.

That blurred and stretched the X-rays, a phenomenon that is rarely captured and has never been studied in such detail before. Some of the light that falls into supermassive black holes is never seen again, but other high-energy light comes from the corona and a disk of superheated material that surrounds it. Scientists don’t know the shape and temperature of coronas — though artists have produced sketches of how the formations could look — but know that they contain particles that move close to the speed of light.

The light shining from the corona lit the part of the black hole that scientists were studying, which the agency described as almost as if a torch had been shone on the exact place they were looking at. The black hole involved is known as Markarian 335, and is about 324 million light-years from Earth. The mass of around 10 million of our suns is packed into a space only 30 times as big, and the spinning black hole pulled space and time around with it.

Studying the blurring could help scientists to better understand black hole coronas, which until now have been mysterious. It might also help demonstrate some of the effects described in Einstein’s theory of relativity, because of the particles’ speed. “NuSTAR’s unprecedented capability for observing this and similar events allows us to study the most extreme light-bending effects of general relativity,” said Fiona Harrison, who is NuSTAR principal investigator and based at the California Institute of Technology.

  • DRUG FOR EBOLA-LIKE VIRUS PROMISING IN ILL MONKEYS

DRUG FOR EBOLA-LIKE VIRUS PROMISING IN ILL MONKEYS

WASHINGTON (TIP): Researchers in Texas are reporting that an experimental drug saved monkeys from a virus closely related to Ebola even after symptoms began. The drug targets a strain of Marburg virus that is even more lethal than the Ebola ravaging West Africa. Both viruses take time to multiply in the body before symptoms appear, and few studies have explored how late treatment might be effective. Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston found that treated monkeys survived even if given the drug three days after infection, when symptoms had begun. Although Wednesday’s study is very small, the work is generating interest because a drug that targets Ebola the same way is under development by a Canadian company, Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp.

New vaccine offers protection against tuberculosis, leprosy

WASHINGTON (TIP): In a breakthrough, US researchers have found that an improved tuberculosis vaccine can offer strong protection against leprosy. “This is the first study demonstrating that an improved vaccine against tuberculosis also offers cross-protection against Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy,” said Marcus A. Horwitz, a professor of medicine and microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics from University of California Los Angeles. That means that this vaccine has promise for better protecting against both major diseases at the same time. “It also demonstrates that boosting a recombinant BCG vaccine further improves cross-protection against leprosy,” Horwitz added.

  • ‘My role is to oversee everything’ – Shastri

‘My role is to oversee everything’ – Shastri

NEW DELHI (TIP): Former India allrounder Ravi Shastri, the newly appointed team director for the ODI series in England, has said that though he will be in charge of the team, head coach Duncan Fletcher has not been sidelined. “My role is to oversee everything. All of them report to me,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo in an interview where he expanded on his role.

The decision by the BCCI to bring in Shastri along with the three Indian assistants – Sanjay Bangar (batting), B Arun (bowling) and R Sridhar (fielding) – and “give a break” to fielding coach Trevor Penney and bowling coach Joe Dawes ignited speculation about Fletcher’s future. But Shastri emphasised that Fletcher would not be sidelined. “Absolutely not. He stays as the head coach. And these two (Bangar and Arun) will be his assistants.

I am there to oversee.” Immediately after the BCCI made public his appointment on Tuesday morning, Shastri went to the team hotel in London where he had a two-hour chat with both MS Dhoni and Fletcher to chalk out plans for the fivematch ODI series which starts in Bristol on Monday. “We had a chat about where things are at the moment and how things have to be addressed. And how important communication will be.” Shastri has been blunt in his assessments in the wake of India’s 3-1 defeat against England in the five-match Test series. Although he picked inexperience as the deciding factor behind India’s defeat he described the team’s performance as “spineless”. “On this tour I saw India’s greatest ever overseas win I have seen.

I know it because I have never seen a track like that and with this kind of inexperienced side, for them to pull it off… Then I also saw some spineless cricket over the last three Tests matches. Spineless means stomach for a fight. People would have accepted 3-1 if there was a little more fight.” Shastri said that it was painful to watch batsmen not learning from their mistakes during the series.

“My only disappointment was players at times making the same mistake,” Shastri said. “That disappointed me. Everyone makes a mistake, but you want to try something different.” In his newspaper column, published the day after the Oval defeat, Shastri wrote: “Five sessions and not five days have been enough to nail them. But move on we must. Sit back and watch if these glam boys are ready for penance.” Asked who exactly were his targets, Shastri revealed it was the top-order pair of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli.

“I was hard on Pujara and Kohli specifically because they came here with big reputations. And they have been brought down to earth with their techniques being found out against the moving ball. And there is nothing wrong in that, it has happened to the biggest players. Now the true test of their character will be: how they bounce back. I have absolutely no doubt that not only will they bounce back, they will excel very, very soon.”

Nationwide protests, vigils to mark Ferguson funeral

They shot him and he fell. He put his arms up to let them know that he was compliant and he was unarmed, and they shot him twice more and he fell to the ground and died.” – Piaget Crenshaw, witness to shooting of Michael Brown

    FERGUSON, MO (TIP):
Action groups across the nation are echoing the demands of of protesters in Ferguson, Mo., with vigils over the weekend and Monday, the day of Michael Brown’s funeral.

o In Detroit, area pastors will lead a group in prayer outside the McNamara Federal Building at 6:30 p.m. ET Monday. “It’s the same day of the funeral of Michael Brown,” said Ryan Bates, executive director of Michigan United, a faith and community organization. “People are outraged not only by the treatment of people in Ferguson but by the militarized police tactics that are popping up all over the country – including in Detroit.”

o Saint Louis University is hosting a prayer vigil at 8:15 p.m. CT Sunday. “Today, our new freshmen began arriving on campus, and I know they will have many questions about what is taking place in Ferguson,” University President Fred Pestello wrote in a letter to students. “It is important that we as a University support them – and everyone in our SLU community – as we all reflect on the events taking place 12 miles away from our campus that now reverberate around the world.”

o The Chico Peace & Justice Center in Chico, Calif., will have a candlelight vigil with speakers calling for racial justice at 7 p.m. PT on Sunday

o Protesters plan to gather outside the White House at 8 p.m. ET Monday. “We demand de-escalation of the police and the military,” an event poster circulating on Twitter reads. “We demand swift and mighty justice for Michael Brown.

Let’s shine a light on #Ferguson.” The Black Student Alliance is joining with other groups at the University of Colorado at Boulder for a vigil and memorial service at 7:30 p.m. MT Monday “in honor of Michael Brown, justice, and all youth of color slain through the effects of systemic racism.”
