Serena storms into US Open semifinal clash with Makarova

NEW YORK (TIP): Serena Williams roared back from an early deficit to defeat Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-2 on September 3 and book a US Open semifinal clash with Ekaterina Makarova. Playing in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal of 2014, world number one Williams kept her bid for a third-straight US Open title — and sixth overall — alive as she stretched her perfect record over the 11thseeded Italian to 6-0.

“I’m just so happy to have won,” the 17-time Grand Slam champion said, noting that she’d had a “tough year” in the majors. “It feels so special to be back in a semifinal, especially in New York.” In Makarova she’ll face a first-time Grand Slam semifinalist. The 17th-seeded Russian advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over former world number one Victoria Azarenka — runner-up to Williams the past two years.

“I’m feeling amazing — finally I’m in a semifinal,” said the Russian left-hander, who had failed in four prior major quarterfinals. “It’s a great feeling.” In a battle of two 32-year-olds, Williams denied Pennetta a repeat of her best Grand Slam performance — a semifinal run in New York last year.

But the Italian gave Williams some tense moments in the early going, seizing a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve in just eight minutes. World number one Williams responded by winning the next six games to take the first frame in less than half an hour. Serving for the set, Williams found herself facing double break point after a second double fault of the game, but reeled off the next four points to avert the danger.

“I felt she was playing really well,” Williams said of Pennetta’s fast start. “I don’t think I was doing too much wrong.” Pennetta stopped the rot in the opening game of the second, fighting off a break point with her first ace of the match and securing the game with her second. Williams held in the next, saving two break points in a game that went to deuce three games and finishing off with back-to-back aces.

It was Pennetta’s turn to fight off a break with a brace of aces in the next, but that would be her last hurrah. Williams held with ease in the next game, starting a streak of five straight games to finish it off in 63 minutes. “You have to believe you can win all the time,” Pennetta said. “I got on the court and tried to do what I have to do to bring the match home, but she was really good today.

“I think we played really good tennis tonight, really strong tennis.” Although Makarova is in the final four of a Grand Slam for the first time, she goes in knowing she has beaten Williams on one of the game’s biggest stages — in the fourth round of the 2012 Australian Open. The left-hander from Moscow recovered an early break in the first set, breaking Azarenka twice in each frame to break through after four Grand Slam quarterfinal defeats. Shortly after the match, Azarenka’s spokesman told reporters that the player had suffered food poisoning and had been vomiting in the run-up to the quarterfinal. But Azarenka said she was just out-played. “I’m not going to make excuses for myself.

I did the best I could today,” Azarenka said. “I want to give full credit to my opponent. She deserves to win. She played much better than me today.” Makarova, who evened her head-to-head record with Azarenka at three matches apiece, said she didn’t notice any drop-off in the Belarusian’s game. “I think she played the same, so aggressive,” Makarova said. “At the beginning it was really tough to change the game to my way because she was really aggressive and let me move a lot.

“Then she did the break, and I just tried to stay with my game, to play point by point, to be solid and turn it around.” The other women’s semifinal was set on Tuesday, with former world number one and 2009 runner-up Caroline Wozniacki, the 10th seed, booking a meeting with unseeded Chinese Peng Shuai. Peng, like Makarova, is in a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time, joining Li Na and Zheng Jie as the only Chinese to make it so far at a major.

  • Federer hopes to see off Monfils and reach US Open semifinals

Federer hopes to see off Monfils and reach US Open semifinals

NEW YORK (TIP): Roger Federer will have to forget his long-standing admiration for Gael Monfils on Thursday when the two go head-tohead with a berth in the US Open semifinals on the line. Federer owns a 6-2 lifetime record versus Monfils, most recently a three-set win at last month’s US Open tune-up event in Cincinnati, but is well aware of the Frenchman’s ability. “He’s got easy top-10 potential,” said Federer, who is bidding for his sixth US Open title and record 18th Grand Slam title overall. “He’s a great mover.

He’s got a wonderful serve, really, which nobody really talks about because of his athletic movement which stands out so much. “I think I can speak on behalf of so many players: We love watching him play. It’s nice seeing him do well again.” For all his undoubted talent, Monfils is into the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for only the sixth time and his only semifinal came at the French Open in 2008. Prone to losing his focus at crucial times during matches, Monfils, 28, has shown rare maturity so far in New York, beating Richard Gasquet and Grigor Dimitrov in impressive fashion.

Monfils, who has not dropped a set in his four matches here, described Federer as a “legend” of the game but the 20th seed believes he is playing well enough to cause the 33-year-old Swiss problems. “Right now he’s the greatest tennis player we ever had, and for me it’s always challenging to play against him,” said Monfils, who faces Federer at 8 p.m. ET (0000 GMT) on Thursday. “I play tennis to play against a big legend, on a big court, show-time.

That’s what I train for. For me the best thing that can happen is to play against that guy on that stage.” Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych takes on Marin Cilic, the 14th seed from Croatia, in the day’s early quarterfinal.

  • Strauss: Axing Cook before World Cup 2015 not right

Strauss: Axing Cook before World Cup 2015 not right

BIRMINGHAM (TIP): Former England skipper Andrew Strauss on September 3 said that sacking Alastair Cook as captain before the 2015 World Cup is not an answer to English cricket team’s one-day woes. The Cook-led England team has lost six out of last seven one-day series. England’s only win was in New Zealand in February last year. “I don’t think the right answer is to just discard him as captain before the World Cup – it’s too close to that event now; you’ve got to stick with him but he’s got to find a way of resurrecting his form and setting the tone,” Strauss was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

Strauss feels Cook, who is averaging just 24 against India after three innings in the five-match ODI series, can turn things around in the onedayers, just as he did during the Test series, where he led England to a 3-1 victory over the current World Champions. “It’s going to take someone to say: ‘Listen, this isn’t a sinking ship – I’m going to rectify things’ and Cook has got a massive role to play yet again.

We’ve been on his case all summer but he’s got to lead from the front with the bat,” said the former captain.”He turned it around in the Test series by taking a bit of pressure off himself and saying: ‘Listen, I’m trying as hard as I can – I’ve just got to go out and see ball, hit ball’,” he added. Strauss also said Cook must work on his strong areas to come out of this lean phase. “I think that’s what we need to see from him a little bit more in one-day cricket – reacting to the ball coming down at him.

He knows where his strong areas are and it’s about committing to them, but at the moment he doesn’t look in great form.” The 37-year-old felt it was important for Cook to get back to form, so that other players could also gain confidence. “He is very much part of the solution. If he can get himself back on board then – as happened in the Test series – the other players take confidence.”They think: ‘The captain’s not under so much pressure, so we’re under less pressure ourselves and can go out and play in a more positive manner’,” explained Strauss.

  • Raja Natwarlal

    Raja Natwarlal

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Humaima Malick, Paresh Rawal,
    Kay Kay Menon, Deepak Tijori
    Direction: Kunal Deshmukh
    Genre: Thriller
    Duration: 2 hours 21 minutes

STORY: Small-time con-man Raja wants to take revenge on big-time criminal Vardha – will swindler-guru Yogi help or double-cross him?

REVIEW: Raja Natwarlal is a golden-hearted con for it leaves you smiling at its tricks, despite obvious flaws. Raja (Emraan) and partner Raghav (Deepak) pull off small confidence tricks in an appealing Mumbai of clattering trains, fragrant Iranis and gleaming dance bars. Raja loves dancer Zia (Humaima) and is set to marry after he persuades Raghav to steal 80 lakhs – which belong to big-time swindler Vardha (Kay Kay), who makes Raghav pay with his life.

Raja’s determined to take revenge but he needs the guru of crooks, Yogi (Paresh), to guide him. Will Yogi agree – and will Raja win? With its twisting story, good-looking frames and zingy acting, Raja Natwarlal keeps you entertained. Paresh Rawal stands out as Yogi, short-tempered, foul-mouthed and shrewd, a malicious mentor – “Kheenche hue kaan se mila hua gyaan hamesha yaad rehta hai” – wincing as he mentions “a very sweet boy”, the fine actor displaying the flair of an old lion that eats bottles of rum.

Kay Kay matches with his Vardha, a savage in a suit, oil-slick and lean, desperately keen on acquiring a cricket team, ready to bludgeon his way towards this. And Emraan convinces too, Raja both swaggering and vulnerable, a hero who smiles shyly, then kisses on the mouth (although pecks on the cheek can get more passionate than the demure caresses here). Pakistani actor Humaima presents a graceful Zia, her role relatively slender but including chest-thumping numbers like ‘Mere hothon ke namak-pare’, which will have your inner tapori tapping her feet. The plot travels from Mumbai to Dharamshala and Cape Town but director Kunal Deshmukh retains firm control.

The story packs in paisa, pyaar, confidence, over-confidence, chummas, chases, corrupt cops, cricket associations, surprises and some rather nice songs – but keeps its weight under control. Despite flaws – like how a don like Vardha doesn’t know the face of a man he’s seeking, who’s now persuading him to buy a nonexistent team – Raja Natwarlal wins you over by the sassy swagger of its tricks, its hit-men and ‘HDMC Bank’, its tongue lodged firmly in its cheek.

After a jeep, Parineeti Chopra drives an original Impala

Parineeti will be seen driving an original Impala model from the year 1964, in her upcoming film Daawat-E-Ishq. The young actress had to practice how to drive the car for couple of hours before she actually started shooting for the scene. The original Impala has heavy mechanical settings unlike the normal power steering cars. This made it difficult for Parineeti to drive the car effortlessly. The entire sequence was very challenging for the actress. It required Parineeti to put in a lot of muscle and yet make it look natural. Parineeti loves to drive but an Impala was a tough one. Previously the actress was seen driving a jeep in her debut film Ishaqzaade. Parineeti got a chance to learn a lot of new things for Daawat-e-Ishq, from learning Urdu to driving an Impala.

  • Steven Sotloff, U.S. hostage slain by ISIS, was also a citizen of Israel

Steven Sotloff, U.S. hostage slain by ISIS, was also a citizen of Israel

NEW YORK (TIP): The beheading of Steven J. Sotloff, the American journalist from Miami who had been held hostage by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, suddenly loomed larger for many Israelis on Wednesday, September 3, when it emerged that he held Israeli citizenship and had lived and studied in the country for a few years. Sotloff’s family broke a yearlong media blackout about his case two weeks ago after he appeared in an Internet video in which a black-clad, knife-wielding militant of the extremist group marked him as the next hostage to die after the American journalist James Foley.

Yet the Israeli connection was kept well hidden. As long as there was a chance Sotloff was still alive there was fear that exposure of his Jewish roots and Israeli past could put him in further danger. As a freelance reporter, Mr. Sotloff contributed to the Israel-based Jerusalem Report magazine along with Western publications like Time magazine, The Christian Science Monitor and World Affairs Journal. ISIS terrorists released a video Tuesday that claimed to show the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff.

In the gruesome footage, titled “A second message to America,” Sotloff can be seen kneeling in orange garb in front of his black-masked executioner after news footage of President Obama talking tough about the Syrian terror group. Sotloff, with his hands tied behind his back, stoically tells the camera that he is “paying the price” for US intervention in Syria. “Obama, your foreign policy of intervention in Iraq was supposed to be for the preservation of American lives and interests.

So why is it that I have to pay the price of your interference with my life? Am I not an American citizen?” Steven said. The killer of Steven then said, “I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State. “Just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people.” As Sotloff struggles and tries to stand, his killer starts to slit his throat.

The camera cuts out to black, then footage shows what appears to be Sotloff’s severed head placed on his stomach. The terrorist said a British captive, David Cawthorne Haines, would be the next. Footage of Haines, believed to be a security worker for humanitarian-aid groups, was shown in the same kneeling position as Foley and Sotloff before their executions.

  • INDIA OFFERS ABUNDANCE OF OPPORTUNITYAUSTRALIAN PM TONY ABBOT

INDIA OFFERS ABUNDANCE OF OPPORTUNITYAUSTRALIAN PM TONY ABBOT

MUMBAI (TIP): Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot arrived in India on Thursday, September 4, on a two-day visit during which he is expected to sign a long-awaited deal to sell uranium to the energystarved India. “The purpose of this trip, as far as I’m concerned, is to acknowledge the importance of India in the wider world, acknowledge the importance of India to Australia’s future,” he told business leaders in Mumbai.

“There is an abundance of opportunities here in India. I am determined to make the most of them.” The Australian PM is expected to meet Narendra Modi and senior ministers during his visit which also aims at boosting trade. Abbott is expected to sign an agreement in Delhi on Friday when he meets Modi, who swept to power in May promising to open up Asia’s ailing third-largest economy to foreign investment. India and Australia kick-started negotiations on uranium sales in 2012 after Canberra lifted a longstanding ban on exporting the valuable ore to Delhi to meet its ambitious nuclear energy program.

Australia, the world’s third-largest producer of uranium, had previously ruled out selling the metal because nucleararmed India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Trade minister Andrew Robb, who is traveling with Abbott, said Canberra is now happy with India’s precautions to ensure Australian uranium exports would be used only for peaceful purposes.

“We have satisfied ourselves that the steps (for appropriate safeguards) are in place,” Robb said this week. “We expect significant outcomes from the visit to further enhance our partnership,” said Sanjay Bhattacharya, Indian foreign ministry joint secretary, on the eve of Abbott’s arrival. Analyst and former Indian diplomat Neelam Deo said all eyes will be on the nuclear deal, which will boost future exports and heralds closer strategic ties. “The deal has been in the works for years and was mostly negotiated by the previous Labor government,” Deo, director of Mumbai-based think-tank Gateway House, told media.

“The signing of the deal removes one of the only challenges to closer ties between the countries in the region.” India, which is heavily dependent on coal for generating power, has 20-odd small nuclear plants with plans for more. The deal with Australia would potentially ramp up those plans, as India struggles to produce enough power to meet rising demand and suffers crippling power shortages.

Australia’s decision to overturn its ban on sales to India followed a landmark 2008 deal between Delhi and Washington for the United States to support its civilian nuclear program. Before heading to Delhi, the Australian premier will also meet Indian cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar and former Australian stars Adam Gilchrist and Brett Lee, ahead of Australia’s hosting of the World Cup next year. Abbott is due to head on to Malaysia on Saturday for talks with Prime Minister Najib Razak, before returning home.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives home after concluding successful Japan visit

Japan to invest $34 billion in India, no nuke deal

NEW DELHI (TIP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home, September 3, after concluding his successful visit to Japan, which promised to give $35 billion to India over the next five years for developmental projects, as the two sides agreed to enhance their strategic cooperation to a new level.

Earlier in Tokyo, Japan announced doubling of its private and public investment in India to about $34 billion over the next five years even as the two countries decided to elevate their ties to a special strategic global partnership but failed to conclude a civil nuclear deal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe during their summit talks also reaffirmed the importance of bilateral defense relations in their strategic partnership and agreed on greater defense equipment and technology cooperation.

The summit meeting took place on the third day of Modi’s five-day visit to Japan when the two countries also decided to expedite talks on sale of US-2 amphibian aircraft to India for enhancing maritime security. At a joint press conference, Abe also announced that as an example of Indo- Japan cooperation, Tokyo will help India in providing financial, technical and operational support to introduce Bullet trains, a project that Modi has been actively pursuing.

Japan will also help India in providing better connectivity with its neighbors, he said. On the civil nuclear deal, which was expected to be finalized during the visit, Abe said they have directed the officials to accelerate negotiations for early conclusion of an agreement to strengthen partnership. While India is said to be pursuing the deal with Japan on the template of the landmark Indo-US nuclear accord, Tokyo is said to be not that enthusiastic about that being the basis.

The 3.5 trillion yen ($34 billion) of investment from Japan to India including Official Development Assositance (ODA) during a 5-year period will be under the aegis of India-Japan Investment Promotion Partnership for development of projects including infrastructure and building of smart cities. The five-year period will also see the doubling of the presence of Japanese firms in India, Abe said.

Thanking Abe for providing him an opportunity to make Japan his first bilateral visit outside South Asia, Modi said,” we both have decided to raise the relationship to a special strategic and global partnership by giving it a special emphasis”. Asserting that his visit ushered in a dawn of new era in Indo- Japan relations, Modi said there is no “limit” to partnership between the two countries. Coinciding with the summit, Japan removed six of India’s space and defenserelated entities from its Foreign End User List.

On the nuclear cooperation issue, Abe said “important progress” has been made in the past several months. He said the two sides were able to have a frank discussion and a deeper understanding on this issue. Modi said India and Japan are old friends and that his current visit will give an opportunity to both of them to further intensify their ties. Modi said a developed India and a prosperous Japan was important for Asia and for global peace and security. India and Japan are two big democracies and they are also part of the three big economies of Asia, he noted.

He said 21st century is said to be Asia’s century but for that to become a reality it is dependent on cooperation between India and Japan and that is why the two countries have decided to elevate their relationship. “This is not just raising the relationship from one category to another… Our relationship is not only regional in its framework, but will have a global impact,” he added. Modi also said that Japan occupies top priority in India’s foreign policy.

He was effusive in his praise for Abe saying he spent a considerable amount of his valuable time to be with him in Kyoto for two days and in Tokyo today. The Prime Minister said Abe has agreed to cooperate with India in all areas taking into account his vision of inclusive development of the country. “We will help you,” Abe told Modi, adding he was ready to extend his help in Ganga cleaning project when he raised the issue. “This is an example of his love and respect for India,” he said, adding the relationship between the two countries was also spiritual in nature.

RAHANE, DHAWAN POWER INDIA TO SERIES WIN AGAINST ENGLAND

BIRMINGHAM (TIP): Ajinkya Rahane’s maiden ODI ton and Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten 97 helped India beat England by nine wickets in the fourth game at Edgbaston in Birmingham. England were restricted to 206 and India chased it down in 30.3 overs. Dhawan finished the game with a handsome six as India now lead the series 3-0, with just one more match to be played.

India last won a bilateral ODI series in England in 1990. Back then, the tourists won both the matches in the two-match series — at Leeds (by six wickets) and Nottingham (by five wickets). Opting to bowl, the visitors first restricted England to a modest 206 and then overwhelmed the target in 30.3 overs to record their third consecutive victory in the ODI series at the Edgbaston, in what turned out to be yet another lopsided contest.

While Rahane destroyed the pedestrian English attack with a 100-ball 106 with the help of 10 fours and four sixes, a woefully out-of-form Shikhar Dhawan (97 not out; 11x4s, 4x6s) also re-discovered his touch as the opening duo put on 183-run partnership off 28.4 overs to lay the foundation for the comfortable win.

It was a dramatic turnaround for India after the 1-3 drubbing in the recent Test series, in which the batsmen struggled to cope up with the swinging ball. Earlier electing to bowl, Indian bowlers produced a disciplined effort to bundle out England for a below-par 206 with Moeen Ali’s 67 being the top-score for the hosts.

    Step up All In

Cast: Ryan Guzman, Brian Evigan, Stephen Boss,
Misha Gabriel, Isabella Miko, Alyson Stoner, Adam G
    Sevani, Mari Koda
    Direction: Trish Sie
    Genre: Musical
    Duration: 1 hour 52 minutes

STORY: The latest in the *Step Up* series brings together many of those in the previous versions for a ‘dance-off royale’, so to speak, in Las Vegas. Amidst the glitter and sequins, the fortunes of their futures hang in the balance.

REVIEW: First, the good. To be fair, the film’s strongest suit is the stellar dance and choreography that you will be treated with, should you decide to go see it. Apart from that, the elaborate sets where all the foot-tapping and hip-swaying takes place also look pretty slick with some fancy camera angles – just like you’d see on a topnotch international dance reality TV show.

The uninteresting? Pretty much everything else. Sean is a janitor at a dance studio and he happens to see an ad for a contest hosted by someone who looks like Lady Gaga’s second cousin, Alexxa Brava, played by Izabella Miko. He ditches the mop and pail for a trajectory that’ll be (he hopes) more glamorous. He is also without his dance troupe – the Mobsters – who have returned to Florida. Soon, Sean gets a new group together and including Moose (Sevani) and Jenny (Koda), they vie for the top spot at the finale. Sean’s love interest and dance partner is Andie (Evigan) and truth be told, their onscreen chemistry does sizzle.

The biggest lacuna is that there’s no Channing Tatum (he was in 2006’s *Step Up*) this time. Much of the script puts the cheddar in cheese. For example, the lead actor Sean (Guzman) has to mouth cringe-worthy lines like: “There’s a magic that happens when you dance. The world is in sync and, for one perfect moment, you feel alive.” It make you wish for them to just do a little less talking and more dancing. The film is like a bunch of music videos strung together with a romance angle.

And as mentioned earlier, you don’t go for this movie for scintillating dialogue, but to see them move it like experts on the dance floor.
