  • SUMMITRY OVER SUBSTANCE?

    SUMMITRY OVER SUBSTANCE?

“Expectations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States later this month need to be modulated with stiff doses of reality. Structural weakness in the United States means that it cannot offer much; and what can be offered is further limited by India’s inability to leverage it to advantage”, says the author.

    36

In contrast to the last few years, there is a perceptible shift in the dynamics of the relationship between the two counties. Although President Barack Obama had developed a warm and personal relationship with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the latter’s manifest political weakness meant that this personal chemistry yielded few tangible results.

Now, when Mr. Modi heads to the United States, the shoe is on the other foot. While the jury is still out on his domestic policies and programs, there is little doubt that he has shown purpose and dexterity on the foreign policy front – both wooing and lining up suitors – while the United States has by and large remained a bystander. A confident Indian prime minister faces a beleaguered and distracted United States president.

On the domestic front, President Obama’s dreadful relationship with the Republicancontrolled Congress has stymied him at every step. And on the international front, he is distracted by crises – from Ukraine to the West Asia to the South China Sea – where the limits to American power are palpable and its mystique is eroding. The emerging structural weakness of American power means that a key lubricant of power in the modern age – money to underwrite programmatic initiatives – is simply not there. Both Japan and China are willing to commit – at least in principle – to considerable amounts of money to build India’s infrastructure. Of course, there is self-interest involved on the part of both governments.

Sadly in the United States’ case, not only are American firms more expensive but government financial support ranges from minimal to non-existent. Even the modest tools that the United States has such as the Exim Bank face the threat of being shut down by a Congress unwilling to renew its charter. To take another example, the United States and India may differ on the specifics of controlling carbon emissions, but both have a common interest in undertaking serious research on mitigation and adaptation.

Not only is there little money to develop new initiatives, instead, economic fears are keeping the pot bubbling on major irritants in the relationship – such as the United States Trade Representative (USTR)’s crusade on pharmaceutical intellectual property rights, or the unwillingness to sign a tantalization agreement, or periodically vilifying the H1-B visa program. Money is not the answer – but it is helpful in finding answers. The structural weaknesses of the United States are compounded by a perceptible lacuna in American bureaucratic resources – both number and competence – devoted to India.

From the White House to the State Department to the Treasury, the leadership and personnel resources related to India are extremely limited. The trend toward centralizing foreign policymaking in the White House has not been matched by a strong advocate of India within the White House of sufficient stature. In the same vein, the absence of a United States ambassador to India (indeed no one has even been nominated as yet), even after a less than stellar stint for the previous ambassador, speaks volumes of United States’ priorities.

Indeed if bureaucratic resources devoted to a country are any measure of “revealed preference” on how important the country is on the United States government radar screens, then in this administration the paucity of resources is pretty damning. And where resources are committed, as in USTR, India is seen as enemy number one. One could argue that India is itself to blame, having shot itself in the foot with illadvised policies over the last few years, and America’s tepid interest is its logical outcome.

But to the extent this is true, great powers do not stay great for long if they are primarily reactive. Compounding these shortcomings is a state department that still devotes considerable resources on well-publicized annual reports on “worthy” issues ranging from religious freedom to human trafficking to human rights, whose hectoring report-card tone might please domestic constituencies but almost certainly raises hackles with emerging powers like India.

Prison populations or gun-related deaths are also worthy causes – but if emerging powers write annual reports on these issues, it would hardly be helpful in strengthening their relations with the United States. Unfortunately, where America has strengths, India has weaknesses. There are a range of issues where India has a lot to gain by partnering with American institutions. Take higher education or building “smart cities”.

But who would want to partner in higher education when the Indian regulatory institutions are All India Council for Technical Education and University Grants Commission? And with the 74th amendment effectively gutted, cities in the United States do not have effective counterparts, since power continues to be concentrated at the state level. This is not to say that there are areas where India cannot seek help from American public institutions.

The Centers for Disease Control and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are two excellent institutions that can help India build capabilities in important areas (epidemiology and weather modeling). The heavy lifting in deepening the relationship will have to come from the two singular strengths of the American system: defense production and private-sector investment. In both cases, India needs help – but can only leverage American strengths if it moves rapidly to remove the multiple bottlenecks that have limited the potential gains.

India’s stance on defense production has been that we would rather have our armed forces poorly equipped, and if not, give you money – lots of it, often in dubious ways – rather than have firms set up production facilities in India. There are few policies in India that have been as incredibly selfdefeating as defense procurement. Given the fiscal pressures facing western defense contractors, India is in a much better bargaining position to invite them to set up shop within the country. And the United States has to consider whether it would rather keep the multiple controls on technology transfer – especially on nonstrategic weaponry – or allow a core strength to be drained away to competitors.

But the bedrock of the relationship will have to be the private sector. That will require regulatory certainty, an improved macroeconomic environment and swifter policy implementation on the Indian side. Both sides have certain weaknesses that could limit the private-sector partnership. In the United States’ case, some business sectors are too close to certain agencies of the United States government (the pharmaceutical sector being a prime example), leading the government to mistake the sectoral trees for the forest of the overall relationship.

In the Indian case, the selfconfidence of the CIIs and FCCIS notwithstanding, the private sector simply lacks any strategic vision. Whether that can (or will) change remains to be seen. For these reasons expect a lot of pomp and professed bonhomie from this trip. But as regards substance, lower your expectations.

Former Pakistan Minister Rehman Malik off-loaded the flight by angry Passengers

KARACHI (TIP): In an unprecedented incident on Monday, September 15, a Pakistani politician Rehman Malik who has been Interior Minister of Pakistan, was virtually chased away by airline passengers furious at being forced to wait over two hours for him. PIA’s flight PK 370 was waiting to take off from Karachi. After what seemed to be an interminable wait inside the aircraft for a “technical fault” a passenger was finally able to draw out the truth – the crew was expecting Rehman Malik of the Pakistan People’s Party, a former Interior Minister.

A group of passengers then positioned themselves at the entrance, determined not to allow Mr. Malik in the flight. “Tell him to catch a bus,” sneered one passenger. “Is he god?” said another. “Malik Saab, you should be ashamed of yourself. You should apologize. You kept 250 passengers waiting,” a passenger shouted, rushing forward when the politician approached the plane. “We have taken it for 68 years. No more!” he said. “We don’t care! You are not a minister anymore! Come down to earth!” Malik finally turned around and walked back towards the airport.

A passenger commented, “Close the gates and fly this plane to Islamabad. This should be recorded, Rehman Malik has been offloaded. We threw him out!” The drama was not over, however, as another passenger came sauntering in just after Mr. Malik left. When he admitted that he was a lawmaker of the ruling PML-N, all passengers turned on him and chorused, “Shame! You made us wait. Get out of the plane.” Pakistan’s national carrier has reportedly suspended some of its employees after the row.

Murder case registered against Nawaz Sharif, ministers

ISLAMABAD (TIP): A murder case has been registered against Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his brother and Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, three federal ministers and top police officials over the alleged killing of two persons during last month’s clashes between the police and anti-government protesters, police officials said on Sep 17.

The case was registered at Islamabad’s Secretariat police station under Anti-Terrorism Act and Pakistan Penal Code sections dealing with murder, attempted murder, attack and abetment of attack. On Monday, a court had ordered the Secretariat police to register the case after hearing a petition filed by the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) over the alleged killing of its workers. The deaths took place on night of August 30 when the police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets on followers of cleric Tahirul Qadri-led PAT and Imran Khanled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to stop them from marching on the PM’s house in Islamabad’s heavily fortified red-zone.

Apart from the two victims, who died from rubber bullet injuries, another PAT worker died that night due to cardiac arrest. Over 500 people were injured. According to the FIR, the crackdown orders were given by Nawaz Sharif and interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. The other to be booked include defence minister Khwaja Muhammad Asif, railways minister Khwaja Saad Rafique, former IG Islamabad Khalid Khattak, IG Punjab Mushtaq Sukhera, the IG Railways and other top officials of the Islamabad police and administration.

Addressing his supporters on Wednesday, Qadri said Nawaz Sharif had no right to stay in power after the registration of the FIR. “How can Sharif remain in power when two cases have been registered against him?” he said. He demanded the PM and all the others who had been booked should be immediately arrested. He expressed reservations over the investigation of the case by the Islamabad and Punjab police, and asked for the constitution of a joint investigation team comprising members of intelligence agencies and police officials from regions other than Punjab and Islamabad to probe the matter.

Nawaz Sharif and other high-ranking figures have already been named in a murder case relating to the deaths of 14 supporters of Qadri when the police launched an operation against them in Lahore’s Model Town on June 17.

Bangladesh court commutes top Islamist’s death sentence

DHAKA (TIP): Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on Sept 17 commuted the death sentence of Delwar Hossain Sayedee, a top Islamist preacher whose sentencing last year triggered the deadliest political violence in the country’s history, , to life term. In a surprise ruling, the court said Sayedee should spend “the rest of his natural life” in jail, attorney general Mahbubey Alam said.”We had expected that the court would uphold his death sentence,” Alam told reporters.

Lawyers for Sayedee said they were not satisfied with the court’s ruling on the 74-year-old, who was convicted last year on eight counts including murder, rape and persecution of the country’s minority Hindu community. “He should have been acquitted of all charges as the case was tainted by a number controversies,” Khandaker Mahbub Hossain told reporters. Last February’s judgement by a war crimes court triggered weeks of bloody protests left more than 100 people dead and plunged the impoverished nation into a major crisis.Security was tightened nationwide ahead of Wednesday’s ruling, with thousands of police, the elite security force, Rapid Action Battalion, and the paramilitary border guards being deployed in major cities and towns.

Afghanistan: Suicide bomber targets foreign convoy in Kabul

KABUL (TIP): A police official in Kabul said that a suicide car bomber has targeted a foreign convoy just a couple hundred yards (meters) from the US embassy. According to reports, at least one person has died in the blast. Faird Afzalai, the chief of criminal investigations for Kabul’s police, said on Tuesday that the bomber targeted a foreign convoy, but he did not immediately have information about what kind of convoy or the number of casualties. The blast happened on a busy road that runs from the US embassy to the airport. A white plume of smoke could be seen rising in the sky after a blast rattled windows in nearby neighborhoods. The attack comes as the country’s two presidential contenders continue negotiations to form some sort of national unity government.

Ukrainian MP thrown into bin outside parliament house

Extraordinary footage has emerged of a Ukrainian MP being chucked in to a bin by protesters. Vitaliy Zhuravskiy can be seen wearing a suit and holding his briefcase as he’s ushered to the large refuse bins by a handful of men before being thrown in head first. The incident happened outside the building of the Ukrainian parliament – Verkhovna Rada – with Mr Zhuravskiy stuck in the wheelie bin, while was also being angrily pushed in it by activists.

A second video, also uploaded today, shows the latter half of the incident where camouflaged police appear to come to his rescue as dozens of people jostle to film and photograph the melee. Mr Zhuravskiy is understood not to have made a formal police complaint, reports local Ukrainian news outlets. According to RT.com, MPs were dumbfounded by the actions of the activists because Mr Zhuravskiy was behind the drafting of a lustration bill that the protesters had gathered to support.

The bill, which was ratified yesterday, forces any MPs who worked under former President Viktor Yanukovich to quit parliament and prevents them from occupying seats in the future. The official had had liquid and tyres thrown on him while in the bin, in an episode which has since attracted apologies from Maidan activists. Mr Zhuravskiy is reported as saying: “I am still shocked by what has happened. “I take this incident as a hit by my competitors, running for the vote in the Zhitomir region. I don’t think that’s the way Maidan people could have treated me, it can’t be true, I simply don’t believe it.”

CHINA TO OPPOSE INDIA-VIETNAM OIL DEAL ‘WITHIN ITS WATERS’

BEIJING (TIP): China on Septt 15 made it clear that it will “not support” the India-Vietnam agreement to enable ONGC to explore two more oil wells if they fall within the waters of the disputed South China Sea administered by it. Asked for his reaction to the agreement signed during President Pranab Mukherjee’s current visit to Vietnam, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China has no objection to any “legitimate and lawful” agreement between Vietnam and a third country.

“We have noted President’s (Mukherjee) visit to Vietnam. I would like to point out that China has indisputable sovereignty over Nansha islands and adjacent waters,” he said. “We hold no objection to legitimate and lawful agreement between Vietnam and a third country. But one thing is to be clear. If such agreement concerns waters administered by China or if such cooperation project is not approved by the Chinese government, then we will be concerned about such an agreement and we will not support it,” he said.

Hong separately clarified to Indian media later that this is China’s stand about oil exploration agreements between Vietnam and any other country, not simply India. While articulating its stand, China wants to be cautious as President Xi Jinping is starting his maiden visit to India on Tuesday which is expected to enhance cooperation between the two countries. The reference to Nansha islands is what Vietnam calls Paracel islands which are part of a major dispute between Beijing and Hanoi.

It is not clear where the two oil wells will be located. China has conveyed similar objections about previous well allotted to ONGC by Hanoi. China virtually claims almost all of the South China Sea. Its claims of sovereignty are firmly opposed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. The dispute between Vietnam and China over oil exploration flared up last May when Hanoi fiercely resisted Beijing’s attempts to deploy a major oil rig. It resulted in major anti-Chinese riots in Vietnam leading to the death of four Chinese. Over 100 Chinese were injured in the incident. Over 400 foreign factories mostly run by Chinese were burnt down. Subsequently China has recalled over 7,000 of its workers from Vietnam over fears for their safety.

    China court: Virginity worth $5,000

SHANGAHAI (TIP): A Chinese woman who sued a man for “violating her right to virginity” after he wooed her with false promises has been awarded nearly $5,000 by a court, reports said on Sept 17. The two were dating but after the woman, surnamed Chen, found out her boyfriend was already married she sued him for swindling her out of her virginity, accusing him of pretending to be single and pledging to make her his wife, Shanghai media said. A spokesman for the Pudong New Area People’s Court confirmed the case and the judgement.

After the man, surnamed Li, suddenly broke off contact, Chen burst into his home and found him with his wife. Chen sued, accusing him of violating her rights to virginity and health and demanding more than $81,000 in psychological damages, plus medical costs of $250. The court found the original demand “excessive” but said in its ruling that the “right to virginity” should be protected by law as it was a “moral right” related to “sexual freedom, sexual safety and sexual purity”. “Violating the right to virginity might lead to harm to a person’s body, health, freedom and reputation… it ought to be compensated,” the court said, though it did not explain how it reached the precise figure.

Australian leader warns of planned attack

SYDNEY (TIP): Counterterrorism raids in Sydney on Sept 17 were sparked by security intelligence that the Islamic State movement was planning a public killing as a demonstration of its reach, the prime minister said on Sept 16. Australian police detained 15 people on Thursday in a major counterterrorism operation, saying intelligence indicated a random, violent attack was being planned on Australian soil. Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he had been briefed on Wednesday night about the operation which had been prompted by information that an Islamic State movement leader in the Middle East was calling on Australian supporters to kill. “Quite direct exhortations were coming from an Australian who is apparently quite senior in ISIS to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country,” Abbott told reporters, referring to the al-Qaida splinter group leading Sunni militants in Iraq, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which now calls itself simply Islamic State.

Boy discovers 3000-year-old bronze sword in China

BEIJING (TIP): A 3000-year-old bronze sword has been discovered in a local river by an 11-year-old child in east China’s Jiangsu Province. Yang Junxi discovered the rusty sword on July 2 when he was playing near the Laozhoulin River in Gaoyou County. While washing hands in the river, Yang touched the tip of something hard and fished out the metal sword. He took it home and gave it to his father Yang Jinhai. Upon hearing the news, people began flocking to Yang’s home, Jinhai said. “Some people even offered high prices to buy the the sword, but I felt it would be illegal to sell the cultural relic,” Jinhai told sate-run Xinhua news agency.

After considering his options, the father sent the sword to the Gaoyou Cultural Relics Bureau on September 3. The bureau arranged a joint team of local cultural relics experts to identify the sword. They identified sword’s material, length, shape and other major factors. Initial identifications found the 26-cm-long yellow-brown sword could be dated back to more than 3,000 years ago, around the time of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, said Lyu Zhiwei, head of the cultural relics office of the bureau. “There was no characteristic or decorative pattern on the exquisite bronze sword. Made in a time of relatively low productivity, its owner would have been an able man with the qualification to have such artifact,” he said.

  • SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB

    SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB

    CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS ISSUE

How can one’s pre-ordained destiny be erased? It is written in accordance with the Lord’s Will. Without the Name of the Lord, no one can be saved. Through the Guru’s Teachings, we are united in His Union.

    || 7 || Without Him, I have no one to call my own. My soul and my breath of life belong to Him. May my egotism and possessiveness be burnt to ashes, and my greed and egotistical pride consigned to the fire. O Nanak, contemplating the Shabad, the Treasure of Excellence is obtained.

    || 8 || 10 || SIREE RAAG, FIRST MEHL: O mind, love the Lord, as the lotus loves the water. Tossed about by the waves, it still blossoms with love. In the water, the creatures are created; outside of the water they die. || 1 || O mind, how can you be saved without love? God permeates the inner beings of the Gurmukhs. They are blessed with the treasure of devotion.

    || 1 || Pause || O mind, love the Lord, as the fish loves the water. The more the water, the more the happiness, and the greater the peace of mind and body. Without water, she cannot live, even for an instant. God knows the suffering of her mind.

    || 2 || O mind, love the Lord, as the song-bird loves the rain. The pools are overflowing with water, and the land is luxuriantly green, but what are they to her, if that single drop of rain does not fall into her mouth? By His Grace, she receives it; otherwise, because of her past actions, she gives her head.

    || 3 || O mind, love the Lord, as the water loves the milk. The water, added to the milk, itself bears the heat, and prevents the milk from burning. God unites the separated ones with Himself again, and blesses them with true greatness. || 4 || O mind, love the Lord, as the chakvee duck loves the sun. She does not sleep, for an instant or a moment; the sun is so far away, but she thinks that it is near. Understanding does not come to the self-willed manmukh. But to the Gurmukh, the Lord is always close.

    || 5 || The selfwilled manmukhs make their calculations and plans, but only the actions of the Creator come to pass. His Value cannot be estimated, even though everyone may wish to do so. Through the Guru’s Teachings, it is revealed. Meeting with the True One, peace is found.

    || 6 || True love shall not be broken, if the True Guru is met. Obtaining the wealth of spiritual wisdom, the understanding of the three worlds is acquired. So become a customer of merit, and do not forget the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord.

    || 7 || Those birds which peck at the shore of the pool have played and have departed. In a moment, in an instant, we too must depart. Our play is only for today or tomorrow. But those whom You unite, Lord, are united with You; they obtain a seat in the Arena of Truth.

    || 8 || Without the Guru, love does not well up, and the filth of egotism does not depart. One who recognizes within himself that, “He is me”, and who is pierced through by the Shabad, is satisfied. When one becomes Gurmukh and realizes his own self, what more is there left to do or have done? || 9 || Why speak of union to those who are already united with the Lord? Receiving the Shabad, they are satisfied. The self-willed manmukhs do not understand; separated from Him, they endure beatings. O Nanak, there is only the one door to His Home; there is no other place at all.

    || 10 || 11 || SIREE RAAG, FIRST MEHL: The self-willed manmukhs wander around, deluded and deceived. They find no place of rest. Without the Guru, no one is shown the Way. Like the blind, they continue coming and going. Having lost the treasure of spiritual wisdom, they depart, defrauded and plundered.

    || 1 || O Baba, Maya deceives with its illusion. Deceived by doubt, the discarded bride is not received into the Lap of her Beloved. || 1 || Pause || The deceived bride wanders around in foreign lands; she leaves, and abandons her own home. Deceived, she climbs the plateaus and mountains; her mind wavers in doubt. Separated from the Primal Being, how can she meet with Him again? Plundered by pride, she cries out and bewails.

    || 2 || The Guru unites the separated ones with the Lord again, through the love of the Delicious Name of the Lord. Through truth and intuitive poise, great honor is obtained, with the Support of the Naam and the Glory of the Lord. As it pleases You, Lord, please save and protect me. Without You, O my Husband Lord, who else is there for me?

    || 3 || Reading their books over and over again, people continue making mistakes; they are so proud of their religious robes. But what is the use of bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, when the filth of stubborn pride is within the mind? Other than the Guru, who can explain that within the mind is the Lord, the King, the Emperor? || 4 || The Treasure of the Lord’s Love is obtained by the Gurmukh, who contemplates the essence of reality. The bride eradicates her selfishness, and adorns herself with the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. Within her own home, she finds her Husband, through infinite love for the Guru.

    || 5 || Applying oneself to the service of the Guru, the mind is purified, and peace is obtained. The Word of the Guru’s Shabad abides within the mind, and egotism is eliminated from within. The Treasure of the Naam is acquired, and the mind reaps the lasting profit. || 6 || If He grants His Grace, then we obtain it. We cannot find it by our own efforts. Remain attached to the Feet of the Guru, and eradicate selfishness from within. Attuned to Truth, you shall obtain the True One.

    || 7 || Everyone makes mistakes; only the Guru and the Creator are infallible. One who instructs his mind with the Guru’s Teachings comes to embrace love for the Lord. O Nanak, do not forget the Truth; you shall receive the Infinite Word of the Shabad. || 8 || 12 || SIREE RAAG, FIRST MEHL: The enticing desire for Maya leads people to become emotionally attached to their children, relatives, households and spouses. The world is deceived and plundered by riches, youth, greed and egotism. The drug of emotional attachment has destroyed me, as it has destroyed the whole world.

    || 1 || O my Beloved, I have no one except You. Without You, nothing else pleases me. Loving You, I am at peace. || 1 || Pause || I sing the Praises of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, with love; I am content with the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. Whatever is seen shall pass away. So do not be attached to this false show. Like a traveller in his travels, you have come. Behold the caravan leaving each day.

    || 2 || Many preach sermons, but without the Guru, understanding is not obtained. If someone receives the Glory of the Naam, he is attuned to truth and blessed with honor. Those who are pleasing to You are good; no one is counterfeit or genuine. || 3 || In the Guru’s Sanctuary we are saved. The assets of the self-willed manmukhs are false. The eight metals of the King are made into coins by the Word of His Shabad. The Assayer Himself assays them, and He places the genuine ones in His Treasury.

    || 4 || Your Value cannot be appraised; I have seen and tested everything. By speaking, His Depth cannot be found. Abiding in truth, honor is obtained. Through the Guru’s Teachings, I praise You; otherwise, I cannot describe Your Value. || 5 || That body which does not appreciate the Naam – that body is infested with egotism and conflict. Without the Guru, spiritual wisdom is not obtained; other tastes are poison. Without virtue, nothing is of any use. The taste of Maya is bland and insipid.

    || 6 || Through desire, people are cast into the womb and reborn. Through desire, they taste the sweet and sour flavors. Bound by desire, they are led on, beaten and struck on their faces and mouths. Bound and gagged and assaulted by evil, they are released only through the Name, through the Guru’s Teachings.

    || 7 || In all places, You are the One and Only. As it pleases You, Lord, please save and protect me! Through the Guru’s Teachings, the True One abides within the mind. The Companionship of the Naam brings the most excellent honor. Eradicate the disease of egotism, and chant the True Shabad, the Word of the True Lord.

    || 8 || You are pervading throughout the Akaashic Ethers, the nether regions and the three worlds. You Yourself are bhakti, loving devotional worship. You Yourself unite us in Union with Yourself. O Nanak, may I never forget the Naam! As is Your Pleasure, so is Your Will. || 9 || 13 || SIREE RAAG, FIRST MEHL: My mind is pierced through by the Name of the Lord. What else should I contemplate? Focusing your awareness on the Shabad, happiness wells up. Attuned to God, the most excellent peace is found. As it pleases You, please save me, Lord. The Name of the Lord is my Support.

    || 1 || O mind, the Will of our Lord and Master is true. Focus your love upon the One who created and adorned your body and mind. TO BE CONTINUED

  • THE RAMAYANA

    THE RAMAYANA

    continued from previous issue

Coldly spake the Queen Kaikeyi: “If thy royal heart repent,
Break thy word and plighted promise, let thy royal faith be rent,
Ever known for truth and virtue, speak to peers and monarchs all,
When from near and distant regions they shall gather in thy hall,
Speak if so it please thee, monarch, of thy evil-destined wife,
How she loved with wife’s devotion, how she served and saved thy life,
How on plighted promise trusting for a humble boon she sighed,
How a monarch broke his promise, how a cheated woman died!” “Fair thy form,” resumed the monarch,
“beauty dwells upon thy face, Woman’s winsome charms bedeck thee, and a woman’s peerless grace,
Wherefore then within thy bosom wakes this thought of cruel wile,
And what dark and loathsome spirit stains thy heart with blackest guile? Ever since the day,
Kaikeyi, when a gentle bride you came, By a wife’s unfailing duty you have won a woman’s fame,
Wherefore now this cruel purpose hath a stainless heart defiled,
Ruthless wish to send my Rama to the dark and pathless wild? Wherefore,
darkly-scheming woman, on unrighteous purpose bent, Doth thy cruel causeless vengeance on my Rama seek a vent, Wherefore seek by deeds unholy for thy son the throne to win,
Throne which Bharat doth not covet,- blackened byhis mother’s sin?
Shall I see my banished Rama mantled in the garb of woe,
Reft of home and kin and empire to the pathless jungle go,
Shall I see disasters sweeping o’er my empire dark and deep,
As the forces of a foeman o’er a scattered army sweep?
Shall I hear assembled monarchs in their whispered voices say,
Weak and foolish in his dotapre, Dasaratha holds his sway,
Shall I say to righteous elders when they blame my action done,
That by woman’s mandate driven I have banished thus my son? Queen Kansalya,
dear-loved woman! she who serves me as a slave, Soothes me like a tender sister,
helps me like a consort brave, As a fond and loving mother tends me with a watchful care,
As a daughter ever duteous doth obeisance sweet and fair,
When my fond and fair Kausalya asks me of her banished son,
How shall Dasa-ratha answer for the impious action done,
How can husband, cold and cruel, break a wife’s confiding heart,
How can father, false and faithless, from his best and eldest part?”
Coldly spake the Queen Kaikeyi: “If thy royal heart repent, Break thy word and plighted promise,
let thy royal faith be rent, Truth-abiding is our monarch, so I heard the people say,
And his word is all inviolate, stainless virtue marks his sway,
Let it now be known to nations,–righteous Dasa-ratha lied, And a trusting,
cheated woman broke her loving heart and died!” Darker grew the shades of midnight, coldly shone each distant star, Wilder in the monarch’s bosom raged the struggle and the war: “Starry midnight,
robed in shadows! give my wearied heart relief,
Spread thy sable covering mantle o’er an impious monarch’s grief,
Spread thy vast and inky darkness o’er a deed of nameless crime,
Reign perennial o’er my sorrows heedless of the lapse of time,
May a sinful monarch perish ere the dawning of the day, O’er a dark life sin-polluted, beam not morning’s righteous ray!”

    THE SENTENCE

Morning came and duteous Rama to the palace bent his way,
For to make his salutation and his due obeisance pay,
And he saw his aged father shorn of kingly pomp and pride, And he saw the Queen Kaikeyi sitting by her consort’s side. Duteously the righteous Rama touched the ancient monarch’s feet,
Touched the feet of Queen Kaikeyi with a son’s obeisance meet, “Rama!” cried the feeble monarch,
but the tear bedimmed his eye, Sorrow choked his failing utterance and his bosom heaved a sigh,
Rama started in his terror at his father’s grief or wrath,
Like a traveller in the jungle crossed by serpent in his path! Reft of sense appeared the monarch,
crushed beneath a load of pain, Heaving oft a sigh of sorrow as his heart would break in twain,
Like the ocean tempest-shaken, like the sun in eclipse pale,
Like a crushed repenting rishi when his truth and virtue fail! Breathless mused the anxious Rama,–what foul action hath he done, What strange anger fills his father,
wherefore greets he not his son? “Speak, my mother,” uttered Rama,” what strange error on my part.
Unremembered sin or folly fills with grief my father’s heart,
Gracious unto me is father with a father’s boundless grace,
Wherefore clouds his altered visage, wherefore tears bedew his face? Doth a piercing painful ailment rack his limbs with cruel smart, Doth some secret silent anguish wring his tom and tortured heart,
Bharat lives with brave Satrughns, in thy father’s realms afar,
Hath some cloud of dark disaster crossed their bright auspicious star? Duteously the royal consorts on the loving monarch wait, Hath some woe or dire misfortune dimmed the lustre of their fate.
I would yield my life and fortune ere I wound my father’s heart,
Rath my unknown crime or folly caused his ancient bosom smart! Ever dear is Queen Kaikeyi to her consort and her king, Hath some angry accent escaped thee thus his royal heart to wring,
Speak, my ever-lovinging mother, speak the truth, for thou must know, What distress or deep disaster pains his heart and clouds his brow?” Mother’s love nor woman’s pity moved the deep-determined queen,
As in cold and cruel accents thus she spake her purpose keen: “Grief nor woe nor sudden ailment pains thy father loved of old, But he fears to speak his purpose to his Rama true and bold,
And his loving accents falter some unloving wish to tell, Till you give your princely promise,
you Will serve his mandate well! Listen more, in bygone seasons,–Rama thou wert then unborn,
I had saved thy royal father, he a gracious boon had sworn,
But his feeble heart repenting is by pride and passion stirred,
He would break his royal promise as a caitiff breaks his word,
Years have passed and now the monarch would his ancient word forego,
He would build a needless causeway when the waters ceased to flow! Truth inspires each deed attempted and each word by monarchs spoke, Not for thee, though loved and honoured, should a royal vow be broke,
If the true and righteous Rama binds him by his father’s vow,
I will tell thee of the anguish which obscures his royal brow,
If thy feeble bosom falter and thy halting purpose fail, Unredeemed is royal promise and unspoken is my tale! THE INDIAN PANORAMA www.theindianpanorama.news SPIRITUALITY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014 15 THE RAMAYANA

  • DON’T MIX SEXUAL FANTASIES WITH TRUE LOVE LIFE

DON’T MIX SEXUAL FANTASIES WITH TRUE LOVE LIFE

Having sexual fantasies with your partner is not all that bad but people with high levels of psychopathic traits lean towards nonromantic sexual fantasies with anonymous and uncommitted partners that may harm their real sex life.

According to researchers, psychopathic sexual behaviour arises owing to a preference for sexual activity outside a loving, committed relationship rather than only an inability to form such relationships. Most people have sexual fantasies and that is quite healthy and normal. “However, people with higher levels of psychopathic traits are more likely to report having actually engaged in those fantasised behaviours, especially when the behaviours were not within the context of established romantic relationships,” explained Dr Beth A. Visser from the Trent University, Ottawa in Canada.

To reach this conclusion, authors performed two studies. In the first study, they rated content themes in the fantasy narratives of 195 men and women recruited at a Canadian university. In the second study, they administered a sexual fantasy questionnaire to 355 Canadian undergraduate students. The idea was to examine the relations between psychopathic traits and sexual fantasy content.

“That is, are individuals with high levels of psychopathic traits more or less likely than other individuals to fantasize about certain fantasy content? Specifically, at higher levels of psychopathy, does partner variety take precedence over emotional connection in sexual fantasies?” asked Dr. Visser. Furthermore, they sought to understand whether psychopathy moderated the relations between sexual fantasy and sexual behaviour.

“That is, are individuals with higher levels of psychopathic traits more likely to engage in the sexual activities about which they fantasise, particularly when those fantasies are deviant or outside social norms?” the authors deliberated. They found that individuals with deviant sexual preferences and normal levels of empathy, kindness and self-control have many strategies for satisfying their needs, including negotiation, compromise, and restraint.

“However, individuals with high levels of psychopathic traits might turn to sexually aggressive strategies to attain gratification,” Dr. Visser noted.

  • Avoid these men at any cost

Avoid these men at any cost

Are you looking out for a new relationship or want to just date men? You might come across somebody and hit it off nicely for a year or so, and then you begin to notice things that could make you part ways. To avoid the pain you undergo when things go wrong, here’s a list of ten types of men you should run miles away from.

    The rebound shot

A man, who is fresh out of a relationship, is still lurking in the transition. At this point of time, he can be quite weak and might lean on the nearest support he can find. But that doesn’t mean that he’s really fallen for you. Although for some people it has worked, but mostly in the long run, there can be no assurance of this one coming to term.

    No money, honey

Understood you are not a materialistic girl, you are independent and are alright with going dutch on a date. Women don’t necessarily want a rich millionaire, but a little something can be a good thing. Even the guy would feel his dignity is safe if he can contribute some. And a man who still cannot understand this – girl, dump the moron now!

    ‘Ex’ factor

‘You are good, but she was better!’ Are you still with a guy who says that? Bang your head on the nearest wall and tell him you might as well go back. He’s not yet over the exrelationship, and somewhere he’s sulking about it. Good or bad, the experience could be anything, but the fact that he still talks about her doesn’t help in getting the current relation any better. And even if you don’t dump him, but make him realise, talk it out; and if it still doesn’t work, it’s unbelievable you are still putting up with it!

    ‘Ex’ out the friendly factor

Men do have a tendency to still retain a certain amount of care for the woman they once loved. So, it doesn’t make any sense for them to remain friends once it’s over. What was there once can be re-ignited in some weak moments. So, dearest men, dump the ‘ex’ as ‘friend’ and concentrate on your current love. A bird in hand is always better than two in the bush.

    Love at first sight

Well, it happens only in books or films. Most often, it’s just a liking or lust. But love, dearies, takes time to blossom. So, lady, if the gentleman has told you ‘I Love You’ a bit too soon, hold your horses and don’t jump into taking yet another big step.

‘The world is hard on me’

No darling, you are just a selfish man who has taken certain wrong decisions perhaps, but doesn’t want to admit it. I know you just said ‘no’, but deep down you know it’s a ‘yes’! Unaccountable, selfish or plain immature, grow up or stop pulling the other person down with you by blaming the world or her for your problems, lest she decides to move the ‘problem’ away from your life.

Can’t take ‘no’ for an answer

Even if it’s just gaining control over the remote. Read the key words ‘gaining control’ and get the hint. If you are ready to be a doormat, and are happy with it, man your relation is going to last a historical era! But if you are a person who commands respect, there are better people out there who give you that. Let Hitler be, you don’t have to become his Nazi army.

  • HOW TO RELAX AFTER A HECTIC DAY

HOW TO RELAX AFTER A HECTIC DAY

We all have times in our lives when we have a lot going on like meeting deadlines, exams, due dates etc, which can affect our stress levels and put our health at risk. So, here are some ways to unwind after a hectic day.

    Take 5-minute breaks every hour

Take 5 minutes for yourself if you have a busy schedule. No matter how efficiently you work, you’ll always get distracted and let your mind wander. So, step out of the office for a breath of fresh air and mild exercise to improve concentration levels.

    Stretch

A great way to relax is to simply stretch. Try to feel your body and pay attention to your breathing. A simple stretch relieves muscle tension and can do wonders for improving your focus at work.

    Take a refreshing shower

A warm water bath, a cold bath or a bubble bath can work wonders. It is a cheap and fun way to soothe your muscles and relax. Use your favourite bubble bath or bath oil to calm and relax you. A shower also clears your head and helps you sleep soundly.

    Get close to nature

There is nothing more relaxing than being surrounded by greenery, the sea or the mountains. Being close to nature helps us connect with ourselves. So, simply looking out of the window or going for a walk in the park can do the trick.

Drink enough water & eat healthy food

It is tempting to order pizza, but it really pays off to take time to cook and eat nutritious and healthy food. Not only will it help you keep fit, it will also boost your mood. A full happy stomach always keeps us upbeat and energised.

A pet can help you relax

Pets are a great way to de-stress, as they make us feel happy and loved.

Spend time with family and friends

Spending time with friends, engaging in some light banter with co-workers, reading comics, spending quality time with your kids and spouse can improve your mood and help you relax. So, make sure you are in touch with people that make you happy and inspire you.

Pamper yourself at your favourite spa

It’s exhilarating to give in to your senses and simply relax. Get a pedicure or a nice soothing facial to rejuvenate both your skin and mind.

    Meditate

You do not have to go on a retreat to the mountains to feel relaxed. Five minutes of quiet time is all it takes to reap the benefits of meditation and relieve stress and depression. So find a comfortable spot, concentrate on your breathing, and watch the stress melt away.

    Accept yourself

Positive affirmations can greatly impact your mood. So, instead of indulging in negative thoughts, tell yourself you look and feel good, you’re doing great and that you can handle everything that comes your way.

    Do something for yourself

Reward yourself with gifts, chocolate and mini-breaks whenever you finish a task. Focusing on yourself and making yourself a priority can boost your mood and help you relax.

    Listen to your favourite music

Stress relieving calm music will help relax you and upbeat music will help boost your mood.

    Cook a simple meal

Cooking can be therapeutic and can help take your mind off things that may be stressing you, plus you can enjoy the benefits of a good nutritious meal.

    Wear comfortable clothing

On reaching home, shed your work clothes and change into clothing made from cottons and linens. This will help you relax.

    Spend time with yourself

Find a zen spot in your home where you can sit down and relax for a few minutes after a long tiring day. Make sure to switch off your mobile phone.

  • SALADS CAN MAKE YOU FAT

    SALADS CAN MAKE YOU FAT

Asalad with too much dressing and the wrong ingredients can cause more harm than good. Here’s how… If you are planning to go on a diet, forget ordering a salad the next time you’re eating out. Did you know that a restaurant salad with a dressing has as many as 1,000 calories? It joins the list of those foods that can make you pile on the pounds and tip the weighing scales. And people who have tried these, have had a bad experience…

    How it affected people

Says Mumbai-based advertising executive Amisha Sinha. “I went on a lunch salad diet two months ago and decided to just have carrots with a little peanut butter for my mid-day meal. But slowly without my realising it, I started to dab on too much peanut butter on the veggies. It made me put on a lot of weight.” Another city-based entrepreneur Vikam Ramani has his own tale to tell. “To avoid a heavy meal, I thought I would switch to a simple, fresh salad at the canteen at a deli close to the office. They used to add a lot of mayonnaise and barbecue dressing to it, which I got used to for the taste and I didn’t realise the salads were actually making me sleepy and sluggish; till I had to discontinue them.”

    Expert speak

What is unfortunate, says dietician Rima Goswami, is that people look at a salad with a automatic thumbs-up. “They just think anything connected with a salad has to be healthy and order everything on it. This is wrong; fried chicken, cheese and nuts all are culprits and avoidable.” Warns nutritionist Vaishali Mehta, “Having a salad like this is especially harmful for those with high-blood pressure. Salty ingredients contain high sodium levels. Instead try fresh lettuce, broccoli, beans, red peppers and sweet potato. Too much dressing is bad, try to just have a single tablespoon if it’s a large bowl.”

  • Bald men in 40s at higher risk of cancer

Bald men in 40s at higher risk of cancer

Compared to men with no baldness in their 40s, men with a specific pattern of baldness at age 45 have a 40 percent increased risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer later in life, claims new research. “Our study found an increased risk for aggressive prostate cancer only in men with a very specific pattern of hair loss – baldness at the front and moderate hairthinning on the crown of the head – at age 45,” said senior study author Michael B. Cook, an investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. “But we saw no increased risk for any form of prostate cancer in men with other hair-loss patterns,” Cook added.

Researchers analysed male pattern baldness in relation to prostate cancer risk in a cohort of 39,070 men from the US PLCO Cancer Screening Trial – aged 55-74 years at enrolment. The men received a questionnaire that asked them to recall what their hair-loss patterns were at age 45 using a pictorial tool. During follow-up, 1,138 prostate cancer cases were diagnosed, 51 percent of which were aggressive. Men who had a specific pattern of baldness, frontal and moderate crown, were 40 percent more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer, compared to men who had no baldness. The study supports earlier research suggesting that male pattern baldness and prostate cancer may be linked. “While our data show a strong possibility for a link between the development of baldness and aggressive prostate cancer, it’s too soon to apply these findings to patient care,” Cook stressed.

  • ESCORTS’ NOVEAU TRACTORS TO HAVE PORSCHE’S TOUCH

ESCORTS’ NOVEAU TRACTORS TO HAVE PORSCHE’S TOUCH

CHENNAI (TIP): The Porsche brand is no stranger to Indian roads but is commonly associated with luxury cars and SUVs. Now an Indian tractor major – Escorts – will roll out a range of top-ofthe- line tractors designed by the famed Porsche design house. Escorts said its new range of under-development tractors will be rolled out in export markets like Europe.

However, the company is tightlipped about the timeline as well as investments pumped into this hush-hush project. Said S Sridhar, CEO, Escorts agri machinery business: “We are developing a product targeting the mid to top end of the European market. We are using the services of Porsche as a design house and they are working with us exclusively. This is the first time they will be designing a tractor for an Indian company.” Escorts has already tied up with the Ferrari brand to introduce high-end luxury tractors in India and discussions are on with them about local assembly as well.

Luxury brand Porsche used to have its own tractor portfolio when it first started out. The first blue print of the Porsche tractor was created in the 1930s but after the war Mannesmann AG decided to license Porsche’s complete tractors in 1956 and began production. Between 1956 and 1963, when the license agreement ended, over 125,000 Porsche tractors were produced and sold. Escorts’ designed-by-Porsche tractor platform will be a critical part of the company’s export plans.

“Right now we use our top-end models in the 50hp-plus category and pitch them as value products in Europe,” said Sridhar. “The bottom-of-the-pyramid segment comprises 15% of the European market so in volume terms it is not the biggest chunk but the margins are better.” The company, whose Farmtrac Heritage tractor is currently being homologated for a German and Polish debut, wants to take its export strategy to the next level riding on its existing range and on Farmtrac Heritage.

“Farmtrac Heritage was displayed in Hanovar last year and we rolled it out in South Africa in May and in Bangladesh last week. Once the homologation certificate comes in, it will be available in Germany and Poland as well as South Africa and Bangladesh,” he added. Escorts is already exporting around 2,000 units a year to 30-odd countries. “We now enjoy 12% market share in India in the 50 hp-plus segment and we are adapting those same products for the bottom-end of the European market,” said Sridhar.

Next on the agenda are other markets in Europe and Africa and of course Asean including countries like Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Exports currently comprise a topline of Rs 200 crore for the company but by next fisc the target is to double the pickings in volume terms. Currently exports comprise around 7-8% of the total Indian tractor market which is the largest in the world in volume terms.

  • Samsung goes offline with mobile phones

Samsung goes offline with mobile phones

NEW DELHI (TIP): In a move that might change the dynamics of India’s booming mobile phone market, Samsung Electronics, one of the country’s largest phone makers, has decided to take the offline retail route even as the rest of the world is moving online.

While its peers like Xiaomi and Motorola are busy selling millions of handsets online, the Korean giant has given in to mounting pressure from thousands of brick-and-mortar retailers over predatory online pricing and has decided to extend exclusivity on selling rights of 48 models, including its muchawaited Galaxy Alpha and Note 4, to offline retailers. Offline handset retailers have been facing the heat from their online counterparts due to heavy discounts offered online, which they couldn’t match.

This has led to the formation of All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA), a body that has vowed to work for the mutual benefits of brickand- mortar retailers and maintain price hygiene across trade channels. TOI had reported in August that Samsung was facing dealer unrest due to predatory pricing by online retailers. While addressing a large gathering of retailers from AIMRA in the capital recently, a senior executive with Samsung Electronics said: “We have taken action against many rogue distributors, who were dumping their stocks online and beating down the price of our handsets.

We are working hard to bring back price hygiene in the market. Our revenues from online sales have come down from 30% to single digit. We also have plans to stop billing WS Retail, the largest reseller on Flipkart.” The executive said that Samsung has struck a deal with various e-tailers, wherein the company would give them exclusive rights to sell one or two models in return for the promise that they are going to maintain the price sanctity of Samsung handsets.

Earlier this month, Samsung made Flipkart the exclusive launch partner for the Galaxy S5 Mini. Interestingly, according to retailers, the difference in prices between Samsung handsets sold online and offline has narrowed considerably since August when a Galaxy S5 that was being sold for Rs 38,000 at retail stores was being offered for Rs 36,000 online. “Now, there is hardly any difference,” an AIMRA spokesperson said. An emailed questionnaire to Samsung did not elicit any response. Retail experts have taken its move with a pinch of salt.

“It’s a regressive move, especially before the festive season when you are going to see a lot of discounts online,” said Arvind Singhal, founder and chairman of retail consultancy, Technopak. “Perhaps the fact that around 80% of India’s Rs 60,000-crore handset business is still done through offline retail might be reason for the company to shy away from online trade. But, Samsung needs to wake up to the fact that it’s not the future since Chinese manufacturers are offering same spec handsets at one third of the price.”

  • G-20 LEADERS SET TO CHECK TAX EVASION

G-20 LEADERS SET TO CHECK TAX EVASION

CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA (TIP): The world’s 20 largest economies are expected to signal a fresh push to check tax evasion by agreeing on deadlines for new measures and call for boosting global growth, through a quicker pace of reforms, when finance ministers and central bank governors from these countries meet here this weekend. “The base erosion (and profit sharing, or BEPS) work done by OECD will have a timetable out of Cairns.

If not, then certainly by the leaders’ summit in November. As for the reporting standards, I hope it’s addressed this weekend. In fact, we will address it this weekend… we do want tax authorities to be able to exchange information more readily,” Australian treasurer Joe Hockey told reporters ahead of the meeting of the ministers from countries that account for 85% of the global economy.

He, however, said India’s demand for sharing of tax- and bank-related information on a retrospective basis may not be feasible. “It is a big systemic change for banks. If Australia went hard and early, it would cost a quarter of a billion dollars ($250 million) to the banks, which ends up being passed on to customers. But, if we do it in a sensible and timely fashion, it will cost barely 20% of that. It’s very hard to have that information prepared in a format on a retrospective basis.

It’s also hard to go back in time,” he said when asked specifically about India’s demand. Exchange of information and BEPS, which seeks to tax multinationals that avoid paying taxes anywhere, are of key importance to India as it seeks to widen its tax base. At the last meeting of the FMs and central bank governors in February, G20 members had agreed to work towards achieving both the goals. While adding 2% growth to the economies over the next five years was identified as a priority by Hockey, it is not clear how the G20 will push for it, given that every country is taking steps that suit its interests more.

In fact, the US Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates and further tapering of the stimulus induced to boost growth are being keenly watched. Asked about action by individual countries and its impact, Hockey acknowledged that G20 could do little.

Ranbaxy told to give pricing data info in US

MUMBAI (TIP): Indian generic drugmaker Ranbaxy Laboratories said on Wednesday that federal authorities in the United States had sought details on how it reports pricing data for some products eligible for reimbursement under the Medicaid programme. The company, which has agreed to be acquired by rival Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, said it had received a civil investigative demand (CID) from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and that it would fully cooperate with the investigation. “The CID is a request for documents and information, and is not an allegation of wrongdoing or demand for compensation,” the company said in a statement. Last year, Ranbaxy pleaded guilty to felony charges related to drug safety.

Merck, Sun in licence pact for skin drug

MUMBAI (TIP): US-based Merck and Sun Pharma have entered into an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement for Merck’s dermatology molecule, tildrakizumab, which is under phase 3 registration trials. Tildrakizumab is being developed for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis, a skin ailment. Under the agreement, Sun Pharma will acquire worldwide rights to tildrakizumab from Merck for an upfront payment of $80 million. Merck will continue all clinical development and regulatory activities, which will be funded by Sun Pharma. Upon approval, Sun Pharma will be responsible for regulatory activities, including subsequent submissions, pharmacovigilance, post approval studies, manufacturing and commercialization of the product.

  • SCIENTISTS CAPTURE THE SOUND OF AN ATOM

SCIENTISTS CAPTURE THE SOUND OF AN ATOM

LONDON (TIP): For the first time, scientists have used sound to ‘talk’ to an artificial atom, demonstrating a curious phenomenon in quantum physics that sees sound waves take on the role of light. The interaction between atoms and light is well known and has been studied extensively in the field of quantum optics. However, to achieve the same kind of interaction with sound waves has been a more challenging undertaking.

The researchers at the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have now succeeded in making acoustic waves couple to an artificial atom. “We have opened a new door into the quantum world by talking and listening to atoms,” said Per Delsing, head of the experimental research group. “Our long term goal is to harness quantum physics so that we can benefit from its laws, for example in extremely fast computers. We do this by making electrical circuits which obey quantum laws, that we can control and study,” said Delsing. An artificial atom is an example of such a quantum electrical circuit. Just like a regular atom, it can be charged up with energy which it subsequently emits in the form of a particle.

This is usually a particle of light, but the atom in the Chalmers experiment is instead designed to both emit and absorb energy in the form of sound. “According to the theory, the sound from the atom is divided into quantum particles,” said Martin Gustafsson, the research article’s first author. “Such a particle is the weakest sound that can be detected,” said Gustafsson. Since sound moves much slower than light, the acoustic atom opens entire new possibilities for taking control over quantum phenomena.

“Due to the slow speed of sound, we will have time to control the quantum particles while they travel. This is difficult to achieve with light, which moves 100,000 times more quickly,” said Gustafsson. The low speed of sound also implies that it has a short wavelength compared to light. An atom that interacts with light waves is always much smaller than the wavelength. However, compared to the wavelength of sound, the atom can be much larger, which means that its properties can be better controlled, researchers said.

For example, one can design the atom to couple only to certain acoustic frequencies or make the interaction with the sound extremely strong. The frequency used in the experiment is 4.8GHz, close to the microwave frequencies common in modern wireless networks. In musical terms, this corresponds approximately to about 20 octaves above the highest note on a grand piano.

  • DOUBLE SOLAR STORMS HEADED TO EARTH RAISE DISRUPTION CONCERNS

DOUBLE SOLAR STORMS HEADED TO EARTH RAISE DISRUPTION CONCERNS

CAPE CANAVERAL (TIP): A rare double burst of magnetically charged solar storms will hit Earth on Thursday night and Friday, raising concerns that GPS signals, radio communications and power transmissions could be disrupted, officials said. Individually, the storms, known as coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, wouldn’t warrant special warnings, but their unusual close timing and direct path toward Earth spurred the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue an alert.

The first CME, which burst from a magnetically disturbed region of the sun on Monday night, should reach Earth Thursday night, center director Thomas Berger told reporters on a conference call. The same patch of solar real estate produced a second, more powerful storm about 1.45 pm EDT/1745 GMT on Wednesday. “We don’t expect any unmanageable impacts to national infrastructure from these solar events at this time, but we are watching these events closely,” Berger said. The sun currently is in the peak of its 11-year cycle, though the overall level of activity is far lower than a typical solar max.

Storms as powerful as the ones now making their way toward Earth typically occur 100 to 200 times during a solar cycle, Berger said. “The unique thing about this event is that we’ve had two in close succession and the CMEs could possibly be interacting on their way to Earth, at the Earth’s orbit or beyond. We just don’t know that yet,” he said. The highly energetic, magnetically charged solar particles could hit Earth’s magnetic field and disrupt some radio communications and degrade GPS signals, NOAA said.

The storms also have the potential to impact electric field power grids in the northern latitudes, which are more susceptible to geomagnetic disturbances. Power grid operators and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have been notified “just in case,” Berger added. On the plus side, the storms should trigger beautiful auroral displays, visible wherever clear skies prevail along the northern tier of the United States. Aurora are caused by electrically charged solar particles hitting oxygen, nitrogen and other gases high in the atmosphere, creating curtains of light above the planet’s magnetic north and south poles.
