    NEW DELHI (TIP): Sachin Tendulkar was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, by the president Pranab Mukherjee on February 4. Tendulkar, 40, is the first sportsperson, as well as the youngest person to receive the award.

    Sachin Tendulkar was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, by the president Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday. Tendulkar, 40, is the first sportsperson, as well as the youngest person to receive the award. Speaking during the ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, Tendulkar said that though he had retired from the game, he would “continue to bat” for India in all spheres of life.

    “It’s the biggest honour for me and I am extremely delighted on receiving the Bharat Ratna,” Tendulkar said. “I am extremely proud to be born in this beautiful nation and I would like to express my gratitude to all the love, affection and support I have received for number of years.

    “My cricket has stopped, but I will continue to bat for India and try my best to give people of India a reason to smile,” he said. “I would like to reiterate what I said a couple of months ago about this recognition and dedicate this to my mother and along with her, all the mothers in India who sacrifice their wishes, aspirations for their children so that their dreams come true.” Tendulkar, who retired from cricket on November 16, 2013 as the game’s highest runscorer in both Tests and ODIs, also saved praise for Professor CNR Rao, the other recipient of this year’s Bharat Ratna.

    “I would like to congratulate Prof CNR Rao for the Bharat Ratna. He has been instrumental in motivating and inspiring youth of India to become scientists. I wish him all the happiness and good health.” India captain MS Dhoni, speaking before the first Test against New Zealand in Auckland, said Tendulkar thoroughly “deserved” the honour. “As a civilian, you cannot get a bigger honour than this. Definitely he deserves it. “The way he has handled himself, not only on the field, off the field as well… Whenever we talk about him, we keep saying the same thing: ideal role model. The kind of pressure there is in Indian cricket, he handled it very well. The kind of performance he has given since the time he debuted was fantastic. An honour well deserved.”

    PROFILE
    Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar famously known as Little Master or Master Blaster is one of the greatest cricketer to have ever played the game. He is the leading run scorer and century maker in both formats of the game. Tendulkar is the only player to be in top 10 ICC Batsmen ranking for 10 years in Tests and in 2002, Wisden ranked Sachin as second greatest Test batsman of all time next only to legendary Sir Donald Bradman and the second greatest ODI batsman behind West Indies great Sir Vivian Richards.

    A normal person can be a specialist in one thing he does the best but Sachin is one man in this world who defies these laws and is a specialist in everything he does. Whether it is batting, bowling or fielding, this man will give everything to help India win. Sachin Tendulkar is one person capable of bringing his country to a standstill. Whenever Sachin strides into the middle, the crowd goes berserk, TRP ratings and TV volume go through the roof, tension levels hit all time high and expectations increase to unprecedented levels. From a child to an 80- year-old man, all have their sights set on Sachin.

    If one has to describe Sachin Tendulkar as a player, he would soon run out of adjectives; words like awesome, brilliant, magnificent are certain to cross your mind, though. He is a genius, with God given talent no doubt. He stands at the crease, with such wonderful balance and poise and at the same time intimidating the bowlers. His footwork is near perfect and he is the nearest thing to Bradman there’s ever been. At 5’5, Tendulkar was not the most colossal player to stride on to the field but he bows out as a giant, who ruled cricket for 24 years and gave his legion of fans mesmerizing and emotionally overwhelming memories.

    With a mountain of runs, Tendulkar’s retirement creates a void so big that one can safely say cricket would never be the same again. His journey started way back in 1989 at the tender age of 16. A disarming smile, curly locks, resolute eyes and abundant talent, this was Sachin who first stepped on to Test cricket against a fiery Pakistani bowling attack boasting of that deadly combination of Imran Khan,Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Tendulkar has niched out a career out of innovation and adaptability. No bowler has single handedly dominated the master.

    In his glorified two decade journey, Sachin has won almost every award associated with cricket. He also owns the highest number of Man-of-the-Match (62) and Man-of-the-Series awards (26) along with 50,000 in every format of the game. Sachin got the better of every bowling attack. With wickets falling around, he always decided to take the fight to the opposition and single handedly won India several matches. Sachin has been a part six World Cups, a record jointly held by Pakistan’s Javed Miandad. He has scored more than 2000 runs in the competition which is the highest by any batsman.

    The talent and genius of Sachin was best summed up by Bradman when he said Tendulkar’s batting reminded him of his own. Tendulkar was the first cricketer to have scored a double century in ODI cricket, the feet he reached at Gwalior on February 25th 2010 against South Africa, at 37 years of age. During the later half of the ’90s, Tendulkar dominated both ODI and Test cricket at will producing memorable innings all across the globe, including the famous ‘Desert Storm’ against Australia which are arguably two of the best ODI knocks ever played. Sachin’s tremendous performances soon elevated him to the most challenging task of captaining the Indian side. But sadly, the pressure of Captaincy took it’s toll on Sachin as his batting form dipped and many criticized Sachin for not leading from the front. Much has been said about the characteristics of a great batsman by many pundits over the year.

    But when Tendulkar produced what many believe “the most aweinspiring innings” at Sydney in January 2004 against the might Aussies, he redifined greatness. After being repeatedly dismissed playing shots on the off-side, Tendulkar did not attempt even a single off-side stroke until he was a good 150 not out and went to score 241 in that innings. More recently, he was woefully out of form during India’s Test and ODI whitewash at the hands of England last year and carried the weight of expectations to what turned out to be a horror tour of Australia.

    But eventually, the best batsman of the modern era dug in deep and ensured that he went out on his own terms. His impact resonated much beyond the cricket field as he accomplished a rare feat by becoming a Rajya Sabha member last year. “Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don’t know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives- BBC Sports, on Sachin Tendulkar.”

    Jackson Heights Indian Merchants’ Association, Queens community members laud Crowley’s leadership, policy victories on Indian American, Sikh issues

    NEW YORK (TIP): Rep. Joe Crowley (DQueens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, was honored by the Jackson Heights Indian Merchants’ Association and broader Queens Indian American community for his efforts on behalf of Sikh Americans and the greater Indian American community, in Jackson Heights on Thursday, January 30.

    Crowley was recognized by the community leaders that included, among others, the JHIMA officials- Shiv Dass, Jaswinder Singh, Subhash Kapadia, Nitin Vora and Mohinder Verma-, and community leaders that included Ravi Batra, Pritam Singh Gilzian and Darshan Singh Bagga, among others, for his successful efforts to convince the federal government to begin collecting data on hate crimes committed against Sikh-Americans and Hindu-Americans; in the U.S. Congress in October 2013; and his ongoing work to end the presumptive ban on Sikhs serving in the U.S. military.

    3Crowley is flanked by Deepak Bhardwaj (JHIMA Board of Director) to his right, and Jaswinder Singh (Chairman, JHIMA) to his left. Others seen in the picture are Pritam Singh Gilzian, Former President of Gurdwara Baba Makhan Shah Lobana and President of Richmond Hill Punjabi Merchants’ Association (extreme left) and Darshan Singh Bagga, Sikh community leader, with association with a number of organizations (extreme right)

    “I am humbled to be recognized by Shiv Dass and the Jackson Heights Indian Merchants Association, members of the Queens Sikh community, and the greater Indian-American community in Queens,” said Rep. Crowley, who serves as the cochair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans in the U.S. House of Representatives.

    “The Indian-American community is an integral part of Queens and our city, contributing to our economic success and enriching our culture. I am proud to have fought for and won concrete victories on behalf of the community and I will continue to do so.” Nearly 100 community members and leaders from New York’s Sikh-American and the broader Indian-American community attended the event.

    4Crowley joins Jackson Heights Indian Merchants Association members and members of the Sikh
    community.

    Over the past two years, Crowley has been at the forefront of a major effort in Congress to convince the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to begin collecting data on hate crimes committed against Sikh- Americans and Hindu-Americans – introducing legislation and sending multiple letters to DOJ and FBI.

    In July 2013, then-FBI Director Robert Mueller announced that the bureau would begin to implement this program. Crowley is leading the call on the U.S. military to end its presumptive ban on Sikh articles of faith, including turbans and beard. He is spearheading a bipartisan letter requesting that the U.S. Armed Forces update their appearance regulations to allow Sikh Americans to serve while abiding by their articles of faith.

    In October 2013, Crowley led his colleagues in creating the first-ever Congressional Diwali celebration. The event brought together members of Congress, prominent Indian leaders, and members of the Indian-American community to build a greater understanding of differing cultural backgrounds and increase understanding and tolerance.

    5Council Member Daniel Dromm with JHIMA members and community members
    “I’m so pleased the FBI is going to begin tracking hate crimes against Sikhs and Hindus, because that is the first step toward preventing the crimes in the first place. But, there is much, much more we need to do. One of my top priorities is ensuring that Sikh Americans can serve in our nation’s military – we took some steps forward on this issue last week but there is more that must be done.

    I also think it is high time that India become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council – and I am going to be focusing my efforts on that,” added Crowley. On the occasion, a few community members were honored by Crowley for rendering useful services to the community.

    They included Jaswider Singh and Deepak Bhardwaj of Apna Bazar; Mahindra Patel and Harshit Patel of Patel Bros. ; Srinivas Ranga of New York Life; Daniel Thomas of Thomson Travels, and Neeta Bhasin of ASB Communications who brought Diwali to Times Square in 2013. Those who were recognized included Pritam Singh Gilzian and Harbaksh Singh Tahli, editor of Shaane- Panjab weekly Punjabi newspaper.

    Politicians present included State Senator Toby Stavisky, Council Member Daniel Dromm, and Queens Borough Deputy President Leroy Comrie. Mohinder Verma, who has been serving in the capacity of Secretary of the association for almost 35 years, the longest period any Indian has served an organization in a responsible position, and Harshit Chugh thanked the gathering and ensured all had a good fill before leaving.

  • CNN Survey indicates Americans overwhelmingly Favor Path to Citizenship for Undocumented Immigrants

    CNN Survey indicates Americans overwhelmingly Favor Path to Citizenship for Undocumented Immigrants

    WASHINGTON (TIP): A CNN survey conducted February 6, says Americans overwhelmingly favor a bill that would give most undocumented immigrants a pathway towards citizenship, according to a new national poll.

    And a CNN/ORC International survey also indicates that a majority of the public says that the government’s main focus should be legalizing the status of the undocumented rather than border security.

    The poll was released Thursday, the same day that House Speaker John Boehner signaled any action on immigration is unlikely this year because House Republicans don’t trust President Barack Obama on the issue. According to the poll, 54% say the top priority for the government in dealing with the issue of illegal immigration should be developing a plan that would allow undocumented immigrants with jobs to eventually become legal U.S. residents.

    Just over four in ten questioned say the main focus should be developing a plan for stopping the flow of undocumented immigrants into the U.S. and for deporting those already here. “The Republicans’ insistence that border security be the primary focus of U.S. immigration policy may have been a popular stand in 2011, but not necessarily in 2014,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “American attitudes toward undocumented immigrants have changed. Starting in 2012, most Americans have said that the government’s focus should be on a plan that would allow those immigrants to become legal U.S. residents.

    A majority has consistently taken that position since that time – 56% in 2012, 53% in 2013, and 54% in the current poll,” added Holland. The Democratic-controlled Senate last year passed a bipartisan illegal immigration bill that included an eventual pathway towards citizenship for most of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. According to the poll, more than eight in 10 support such a plan.

    There is little partisan divide, with 88% of Democrats, 81% of independents and 72% of Republicans in agreement. The Senate bill stalled in the GOP dominated House. Republicans said they preferred to address the matter incrementally rather than in one comprehensive measure. One idea House Republicans are considering is giving undocumented immigrants legal status to stay in the U.S., but not allow them a pathway towards citizenship. According to the survey, only 35% support such an idea, with just over six in 10 opposed.

    Again, there was no partisan divide, with two-thirds of Democrats and around six in 10 independents and Republicans opposing such a plan. The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International from Jan. 31-Feb. 2, with 1,010 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey’s overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points. Meanwhile, on January 30, the House Republican Leadership released a one-page document entitled “Standards for Immigration Reform”. This is the long-awaited response to the bipartisan immigration reform bill passed by the Senate in June 2013.

    Enforcement
    The Republicans Immigration Principles first address the issue of immigration enforcement. They declare that the following three things must occur before there can be any legalization program: 1) We must secure our borders and verify that they are secure; 2) There must be a functioning entry-exit system to make sure that people do not overstay their visas; 3) There must be a workable electronic employment verification system.

    Reform the Legal Immigration System
    The standards call for increasing the number of employment-based visas, limiting the number of family-based visas and eliminating the visa lottery. They also stressed the need for temporary workers, and explicitly endorse a temporary visa program for agricultural workers.

    Legalization
    With respect to legalization of the 11-12 million persons who are residing in the U.S. without papers, the standards explicitly reject a “special pathway to citizenship”. In order for these persons to be able to legalize their status, they must:
    1) Admit their culpability;
    2) Pass rigorous background checks;
    3) Pay significant fines and back taxes;
    4) Develop proficiency in English and American civics; and
    5) Be able to support themselves and their families without public benefits.

    There will be no legalization program until certain enforcement measures have been implemented and found to be working. The standards do allow an exception for persons who were brought to the United States as children by their parents. They will have a path to citizenship if they meet certain eligibility standards and they either serve in the U.S. military or they obtain a college degree. The standards foreclose the possibility of negotiating a compromise bill with the upper house based on the bill passed by the Senate in 2013. Instead, they call for piecemeal legislation.

    Is a Compromise Possible?
    Given these broad principles, is there any hope for a compromise reform bill to become law in 2014? First, consider that many of these GOP House principles mirror parts of the Senate bill:
    1) Tough border enforcement;
    2) Mandatory E-Verify;
    3) Increasing employment-based immigration;
    4) Reducing family-based immigration and eliminating the visa lottery;
    5) New temporary visa program including one for agricultural workers.

    The main point of contention is the rejection of the Senate’s 13-year Pathway to Citizenship. Is it good policy to legalize millions of undocumented workers without allowing them to become U.S. citizens one day? Here the GOP House Standards threaten to upset the delicate balance worked out between labor and management in crafting the Senate’s compromise legislation. Richard Trumka, the President of the AFL-CIO and a strong supporter of the Senate bill stated that “half-measures that would create a permanent class of noncitizens without access to green cards should be condemned, not applauded.

    Until we create a functioning immigration system with a pathway to citizenship, ruthless employers will continue to exploit low wage workers, pulling down wages for all.” However, Representative Paul Ryan (RWS) who may be a contender for the Presidential nomination in 2016 made statements which show that there is a substantial wiggle room in the Principles for compromise. “If you want to get in line to get a green card like any other immigrant, you can do that. You just have to get at the back of the line so that we preference that legal immigrant who did things right in the first place.”

    So, what’s the bottom line?
    Here is what President Obama had to say: “If the speaker proposes something that says right away, folks aren’t being deported, families aren’t being separated, we’re able to attract top young students to provide the skills or start businesses here, and then there’s a regular process of citizenship, I’m not sure how wide the divide ends up being.” Here is my take: Wait for the Republican primaries to be over in May and June.

    Then, GOP representatives, no longer looking over their right shoulders at Tea Party challengers, will be in a better position to compromise. Notice that while the principles oppose a “special” pathway to citizenship, there is no explicit bar to legalized persons eventually attaining U.S. citizenship. There is room for compromise. Skeptical? Consider how far the GOP has moved toward reality on immigration policy since Mitt Romney’s “selfdeportation” fiasco of 2012.

    Woods confirms he’ll skip WGC Match Play

    LOS ANGELES (TIP): Tiger Woods made it official on February 6, confirming on his website that he’ll skip the WGC Match Play Championship this month. The world number one announced that his next tournament will be the US PGA Tour’s Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, February 27- March 2. After that he’ll play the World Golf Championships Cadillac Championship at Doral near Miami, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando — in both of which he is the defending champion.

    The WGC-Cadillac is March 6-9, and the Palmer Invitational is March 20-23. That will then give Woods some time off before he tackles the first major of the year, the Masters at Augusta National April 10-13. “The Honda Classic is close to my home, and I want to support it whenever I can,” Woods said. “We have a Learning Center at Murray Middle School in Stuart, Florida, and this event does so much to help the community, including the efforts of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.

    Woods’ victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational last year was his eighth title at Bay Hill, and vaulted him back to number one in the world for the first time since 2010. “I’m also excited about spending time with Arnold and defending my title at his tournament and the WGC-Cadillac. I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done at Doral,” Woods said. Although he is a three-time winner of the WGC Match Play, Woods’s decision to skip it had been expected.

    Even though original plans to travel to Sochi to watch girlfriend Lindsey Vonn have fallen by the wayside because of the knee injury that forced Vonn out of the Winter Games, Woods said he decided to use the week to get ready for the later events closer to his Florida home. “I had planned to take that week off and travel with Lindsey to Sochi, but unfortunately that won’t happen,” Woods said. “Instead, I’ll stay home and prepare for the Florida tournaments.”

  • Formula none in Indian Hockey

    Formula none in Indian Hockey

    Adecade ago former Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) president KPS Gill triggered a trend, which interestingly, is followed even today by the men in power, Hockey India. Just before the 2004 Athens Olympics, Gill surprised everyone by appointing the little known German Gerhard Rach as coach of the Indian team. There was hope that India’s first foreign coach would rescue the sinking fortunes of the game in the country. Rach had no magic wand to take India back to the top of the rankings and expectedly, after a few uneventful months, he was sacked. A decade later, after experimenting with three more foreigners, including the refulgent Ric Charlesworth, who was the technical director of the team for a brief period, India remains exactly where they were a decade ago.

    There are two foreigners at the helm of the national team today — Terry Walsh as chief coach and Roelant Oltmans as the man in charge of the national team. Ever since Rach’s sacking, India’s ranking has plummeted from No. 5 to 10 before improving to eight after the Hockey World League in Delhi earlier this month. Can Australian Walsh and Dutchman Oltmans, renowned the world over for their success in handling different teams, change India’s fortunes? The answer is no. While their appointment may be a step in the right direction, there are several other details that Hockey India needs to take care of.

    Former hockey star Jagbir Singh hit the nail on the head when he said there was no harm in using foreign expertise to improve the performance of the team, but at the same time we need to take a close look at the grassroots level. “Remember, water always flows from the top. So if the national team does well it has a positive effect on all levels of the game. I’m in favour of using foreign expertise,” Jagbir said. “But this is a temporary arrangement. We need to train our coaches who are working at the grassroots level. That’s an area which needs restructuring.”

    What Spaniard Jose Brasa did during his one-and-half year stint with the hockey team was a grim pointer to the fact that a foreign coach, even one of exceptional calibre, alone cannot bring about a major change. For most part of his tenure, he was teaching players in the national camps how to hold the stick and hit the slap shot — the basics. The rest of the time, he was busy learning Hindi to communicate effectively with the players, most of whom could not understand English. “( Coach) Harender Singh used to interpret Brasa’s instructions and relayed it to the players in the camps.

    But during Michael Nobbs’ tenure, the interpretation done by one of the support staff was poor. There was clearly a communication problem as the players at times struggled to pick up what Nobbs was saying,” an official attached to the hockey team told Times Sportal. By the time Brasa picked up enough Hindi for effective communication with the team and made the players good enough in their basic skills he was shown the door. “If a coach changes every year, it affects a young player’ style since no two coaches give similar training. But if you have a uniform system in place, where you also train your coaches, then things may be different,” he said.

  • BRITAIN SAYS IT ADVISED INDIA ON 1984 OPERATION BLUE STAR

    BRITAIN SAYS IT ADVISED INDIA ON 1984 OPERATION BLUE STAR

    LONDON (TIP): British military’s role in the 1984 Operation Blue Star was “limited” and “purely advisory”, UK’s foreign secretary William Hague told parliament. Hague said the UK played no role in the actual operation that took place at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

    In a statement on the conclusion of an inquiry into alleged British assistance provided by then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Hague said, “The report concludes that the nature of the UK’s assistance was purely advisory, limited and provided to the Indian government at an early stage in their planning.”

    An analysis of nearly 200 files and 23,000 documents has confirmed that a “single British military adviser” travelled to India between February 8 and 19, 1984, to advice Indian intelligence services on contingency plans that they were drawing up for operations in the temple complex, including ground reconnaissance of the site.

    “The cabinet secretary’s report includes an analysis by current military staff of the extent to which the actual operation in June 1984 differed from the approach recommended in February by the UK military adviser. Operation Bluestar was a ground assault, without the element of surprise, and without a helicopter-borne element,” Hague said. “The cabinet secretary’s report concludes that the UK military officer’s advice had limited impact on Operation Blue Star.

    This is consistent with the public statement on 15th January this year by the operation commander, Lt Gen Brar, who said that ‘no one helped us in our planning or in the execution of the planning’,” he said. Hague said this conclusion is also consistent with an exchange of letters between former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Thatcher on June 14 and 29, 1984, discussing the operation.

    While admitting that some military files covering various operations were destroyed in November 2009, as part of a routine process undertaken by the ministry of defence at the 25-year review point, copies of at least some of the documents in the destroyed files were also in other departmental files. The report by cabinet secretary Jeremy Heywood includes the publication of the relevant sections of five extra documents that shed light on this period, but which would not normally have been published, the minister told MPs.

    “The adviser had made clear that a military operation should be put into effect only as a last resort when all attempts of negotiation had failed. It recommended the inclusion in any operation an element of surprise and the use of helicopter forces in the interests of reducing casualties and bringing about a swift resolution,” Hague said. “This giving of military advice was not repeated…and the cabinet secretary found no evidence of any other assistance such as equipment or training,” he added.

    British Prime Minister David Cameron had ordered the inquiry after documents released under the 30-year declassification rule here implied British SAS commanders had advised the Indian government as it drew up plans for Operatio Blue Star in February 1984. Sikh groups in the UK have criticised the scope of the inquiry and claim it focuses on a very “narrow period”.

    http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.co m/images/pixel.gif Britain’s only Sikh MP, Paul Uppal, spoke in the Commons on Tuesday to stress that the report makes clear that the UK played no “malicious” role in Operation Blue Star and called on the government to work with Sikh groups and the Indian High Commission in the UK to work towards a “process of truth and reconciliation so that the community can finally begin to feel a sense of justice”.

    A few months after Operation Blue Star, then Indian Prime Minister Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in an apparent revenge attack. The row over how much the British knew and helped in the incidents 30 years ago threatens to derail Conservative party attempts to attract Sikh voters, who could play a major role in marginal seats in London and Leicester in any election. Hague updated MPs on the extent of Thatcher’s involvement in helping plan the operation.

    Sikh groups in the UK criticised the scope of the inquiry into Britain’s role in the operation. In a letter to Cameron, Sikh Federation UK chairman Bhai Amrik Singh said: “We are dismayed the terms of the review were only formally made available almost three weeks after the review was announced and only days before an announcement of the results of the review are expected in parliament.

    Mayor de Blasio has made good his promise to drop the city’s appeal of a judge’s decision to reform the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy

    “This will be one city, where everyone’s rights are respected, and where police and community stand together to confront violence.” U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin ruled last year that the Police Department had discriminated against minorities with stop-and-frisk, and ordered that monitor oversee the NYPD and other reforms.

    In the agreement announced today, a court-appointed monitor will oversee the NYPD’s reform of stop-and-frisk for three years. The city filed to appeal the decision last year under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Despite the city dropping the appeal, the case may not be over. When de Blasio was elected mayor last year, the Patrolman’s Benevolent Association promised that they will seek to intervene and carry on the appeal if the city drops the case.

    Last week, joining the teen host of Riti Bhalla Special, Mangano said, “I hope that someday I will watch the parade in New Delhi in person.” Appearing fifth time since 2011 on the special India Day shows hosted by Bhalla, Mangano, representing a county larger in population than seven states of America, greeted Indian Americans across the US with “Happy Republic Day, Jai Hind”. Mangano also commended Indian Americans at large and especially those “who are part of my administration in Nassau County and contribute to our successes each and every day.”

    Bhalla, currently a student of New York University, started hosting her biannual celebrations of the Republic Day and the Independence Day of India in 2008, when she was 14 years old. Over the years, ten governors, 22 senators and congressional leaders, as well as four presidential candidates – Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, John McCain and Joe Lieberman – have also appeared on Bhalla’s shows.

    Bollywood celebrities, Shah Rukh Khan, Yash Chopra, Sanjay Dutt and Anushka Sharma as well as the former President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam have appeared as Riti’s guests. In 2012, history of sorts was made on Riti Bhalla Special when Indian American Astronaut Sunita Williams connected with Bhalla all the way from the International Space Station and greeted Indians around the world on Independence Day. The program was telecast in over 100 countries and covered by the print media worldwide.

    Feds grab $21.6M in counterfeits before Super Bowl

    NEW YORK (TIP): Investigators have seized more than $21.6 million in knockoff souvenir football jerseys, caps and other merchandise, shut down illegal websites and made dozens of arrests in a crackdown on Super Bowl counterfeiters, authorities said Thursday, January 30.

    The seizures and arrests were announced at a Manhattan news conference where NFL and law enforcement officials displayed fake Payton Manning and Russell Wilson jerseyscomplete with knockoff Adidas labeling- Broncos and Seahawks hats, Super Bowl Tshirts and other goods made to look like official NFL gear.

    The league and law enforcement “are working hard to prevent fans from being scammed by criminals seeking to profit from the public’s passion for the NFL, their home teams and the Super Bowl,” Anastasia Danias, an NFL senior vice president, said in a statement issued three days before the game in East Rutherford, N.J. During an eight-month operation, investigators seized more than 202,000 Super Bowl-related items that, if legitimate, would have been worth more than $21.6 million.

    Authorities called the dollar amount a record for similar enforcement operations before other Super Bowls, including one last year that netted about $17 million in seizures. Authorities say most of the knockoffs were manufactured in China. They say once the makers learned the Broncos and Seahawks made the Super Bowl, they rushed to make the goods with the teams’ logos. Then the goods were smuggled into the United States, often using overnight shipping.

    Some of the items make their way to street corners in Times Square and elsewhere where they are sold for half the price or less of legitimate merchandise. But others are offered on websites designed to trick buyers into thinking they are purchasing officially licensed goods worth the nearly full price they pay. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has obtained court orders to shut down several of the bogus Super Bowl gear websites.

    Authorities warn that users of the websites risk identity theft, and that proceeds can go to other illegal activities like drug trafficking. Earlier this week, New York authorities announced the arrest of two men on charges they made high-quality counterfeit Super Bowl tickets and sold them online.

    Spiritual Poetry Symposium (Ruhani Mushaira) Organized

    NEW YORK (TIP): Spirituality is the soul of life’s poetry. Not often does one come across an event where these two are celebrated and relished. For the past few years Science of Spirituality in Amityville NY, has been hosting Spiritual Poetry Symposium, “Ruhani Mushaira”. This event is a celebration of the poetry of Darshan Singh (1921-1989), a beacon of spirituality in the 20th century.

    An acclaimed mystic poet, master of “Surat Shabd Yoga”, and spiritual teacher of “Sant Mat”, Darshan Singh was conferred with the prestigious Urdu Academy Award for two of his Urdu poetry collections. His various works not only continue to kindle the spirit of oneness among fellow humans but also herald the message of spiritual unity that ties all creation and its various manifestations.

    Despite the inclement weather, the event was well attended by renowned Urdu poets, enthusiasts of Urdu poetry and those who follow mystic poetry. “Ruhani Mushaira”, more than anything, was a platform that seeded positive vibes towards cultural understanding, human love and spiritual oneness. There were references to undoing the impact of historic follies that plague many parts of the world and building on the universal love and spiritual unity that binds all.

    Audience was enthralled by poets in attendance including Sadarat, Qaseem Bin Nasam Amrohvi, Maulana Rehan Naqvi, Tarlok Singh, Jori Kohli, Hasnain Raza, and Qaseem Bin Nasam Amrohvi. The evening saw the launch of soft-cover collection “Noore- Aqeedat” (Noor: Light, Splendor – Aqeedat: Faith), an anthology of select urdu mystic poetry by Darshan Singh. The book presents a powerhouse selection of Darshan Singh’s poetic gems in Urdu and Roman English.

    The spiritually charged evening had a heart-tugging message of universal love, peace and unity. The theme that underlined the whole event, and further accentuated the mystic message of oneness in God, was of tapping inside into the flame of love, living in loving remembrance, and passing through the ups and downs of life with a sense of equanimity. The core behind the teaching and poetry of Darshan Singh and Sant Mat is ethical living, selfless service and the practice of light and sound meditation.

    Celebration of Darshan Singh, his teachings and poetry, is an important initial step in ultimately practicing the principles of universal love, peace and unity. “Ruhani Mushaira” is proving to be a critical step to spread the message of love and in popularizing teachings and practices to attain oneness within and without. Science of Spirituality/Sawan Kirpal Ruhani Mission is a nonprofit, multi-faith organization that provides a forum for people to learn meditation, experience personal transformation, and bring about inner and outer peace and human unity. Port Authority orders airlines to raise wages, give paid holiday to airport workers

    NEW YORK (TIP): Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Director Patrick Foye has ordered the CEOs of Delta, JetBlue, American and United airlines to immediately raise wages and make Martin Luther King Jr.

    Day a paid holiday for the 8,000 contracted workers at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports. Foye sent a letter to the four CEOs telling them to grant an immediate $1 an hour raise to workers making $9 or less, recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a paid holiday and work towards “providing an improved wage and benefits package to the thousands of hard-working men and women at the airports.”

    The announcement comes a week after close to 1,000 workers, elected officials and clergy members blocked a bridge leading to LaGuardia Airport on Martin Luther King Jr. Day during an act of civil disobedience demanding “economic justice.” “Pat Foye’s letter is a promising step forward and marks the first real progress we have made in lifting thousands of contracted airport workers out of poverty,” said Hector Figueroa, president of SEIU 32 BJ, a union representing most of the airport workers.

    “We have gotten to this point due to the courage of the contracted airport workers and their willingness to take action – including being arrested for civil disobedience at LaGuardia Airport on MLK Day along with Congress member Charles Rangel and many others.” During the day of civil disobedience, more than 30 people were arrested, including city and state elected officials, and workers. “It’s good that someone is finally listening to us and responding,” said Wendy Arellano, a LaGuardia Airport cabin cleaner.

    “This is a good plan. It’ll be better when we have good benefits, security and the peace of mind that a good contract gives you. But, for now, getting us up to 10 dollars and 10 cents is a real start.” Figueroa said that the work will still continue to “bring contracted airport workers the dignity and respect they deserve,” and also help these workers get out of the path to poverty and succeed in gaining economic justice.

  • SC stays Bhullar’s Execution

    SC stays Bhullar’s Execution

    NEW DELHI (TIP): The Supreme Court on Friday, January 31, stayed the execution of Khalistani terrorist Devinderpal Singh Bhullar and agreed to review its judgment by which it had rejected the 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict’s plea to commute his death sentence to life term.

    A four-judge bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam issued notice to the Centre and Delhi government on a curative petition filed by Bhullar’s wife Navneet Kaur. The bench also comprising justices R.M. Lodha, H.L. Dattu and S.J. Mukhopadhaya directed the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), where Bhullar is being treated, to file a medical report within a week on the condition of the death convict who is alleged to be suffering from a mental illness.

    “We would examine whether our judgment (pertaining to commutation of death sentence to life term on the ground of delay in deciding the mercy plea) is applicable or not in this case,” the bench said, adding “we also want to know his present condition”.

  • Tata Nano, other Indian small cars fail independent crash tests

    Tata Nano, other Indian small cars fail independent crash tests

    NEW DELHI (TIP): Some of India’s best-selling small cars have failed independent crash tests conducted by a global car safety watchdog. All five small cars popular on the Indian market last year, including the famous Tata Nano and the Hyundai i10, failed the crash tests performed by London car-safety watchdog Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme).

    The cars that were tested were the Tata Nano, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo. All cars had to be made-in-India models only, and the most basic or entry-level version available in the market was selected for testing. This meant none of them had airbags – one of the most basic prerequisites globally to pass a safety test.

    There were two tests carried out on identical cars of the same make – meaning two of each car were procured by Global NCAP from Indian showrooms, and shipped to Germany for the tests. One crash test was performed at 56 kmph, the other at 64 kmph. All five cars failed the test, landing a zero on a scale of 1-5. Representatives from each manufacturer were invited to witness the test, and the results have been shared with them all too.

    Automakers said the issue of car safety is complex, involving not just passenger safety, but also the safety of those outside the car. That means cars need to handle well and drivers must be educated about the rules of the road, and roads should be in good condition. As NDTV’s Automobiles Editor, I was consulted on which cars should be tested. Of the five cars, only the Figo and Polo showed good structural rigidity and therefore a safer cabin, while the smaller cars performed rather poorly.

    What is rather surprising to me is that a car like the Hyundai i10 – which is only made in India for global markets – also did badly. The made-in-India for export to Europe i10 has a good rating in its Euro NCAP test for instance, which begs the question – are the cars for Indian buyers made differently? India’s growing middle class has helped fuel a booming auto industry, making the country the world’s sixth-largest car market.

    But nearly 140,000 people die on Indian roads every year in nearly five lakh accidents. That’s the worst road safety record in the world. Given those grizzly statistics, it is staggering to think India is the only country in the world’s top ten car markets that does not have a comprehensive testing programme that measures the safety of cars.

  • Arvind Kejriwal targets top leaders in ‘India’s most corrupt’ list

    Arvind Kejriwal targets top leaders in ‘India’s most corrupt’ list

    NEW DELHI (TIP): A day after he announced that his new Aam Aadmi Party will contest nearly 350 of the Lok Sabha’s 543 seats, Arvind Kejriwal listed his choice for “India’s Most Corrupt” and vowed to put up strong candidates against them.

    Union ministers like Kapil Sibal, Kamal Nath and Farooq Abdullah were among his nominees; so was Nitin Gadkari, BS Yeddyurappa and Anant Kumar of the BJP and Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi who is helming his party’s campaign for the national election due by May. “Don’t let a single corrupt politician enter Parliament,” he told party workers.

    Think of that election as a revolution to cleanse parliament, Mr Kejriwal urged party workers in Delhi. He has declared that his party will prioritize defeating about 160 candidates who have criminal records. Positioning his party as the putative antidote to a deeply-corrupt system has served the former tax inspector well.

    A month ago, he took over as the chief minister of Delhi after the Aam Aadmi Party or AAP emerged as a breakout hit in the first election it contested. After the hyper-change it escorted, national interest in the AAP has spiked. Opinion polls project about 12 seats for the AAP, but its impact is visible in the national campaign, with the two major parties, the Congress and the opposition BJP, aping its anti-elite, anti-corruption language.

  • UTTARAKHAND CHIEF MINISTER VIJAY BAHUGUNA RESIGNS

    UTTARAKHAND CHIEF MINISTER VIJAY BAHUGUNA RESIGNS

    DEHRADUN (TIP): Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna, 66, has finally paid the price for the shoddy relief and rehabilitation work carried out by his government after last year’s flash floods.

    He drove down to Dehradun Raj Bhawan on January 31 and handed over his resignation to Governor Aziz Qureshi. Union minister Harish Rawat, who claims to enjoy the backing of a majority of the Congress lawmakers in the state, is the frontrunner in the race to replace Bahuguna. Bahuguna’s removal has been on the cards for quite some time, and is being viewed as part of the organizational revamp being undertaken by the Congress leadership ahead of the national elections, due by May this year.

    The party had earlier changed the state presidents of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Bahauguna, a surprise pick for the Uttarakhand chief minister’s post after the polls held in March 2012 had thrown a hung assembly, has earned a lot of flak for his poor handling of the relief work undertaken by his government after the natural calamity that wreaked havoc in large parts of Tehri district. He got a taste of popular disaffection against his rule in October, 2012, when his son Saket suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the BJP in the by-election to the Tehri Lok Sabha constituency.

    Bahuguna’s leadership has since then been called into question. In the 2012 polls, the Congress won 32 seats in the 70-member assembly, and was only marginally ahead of the BJP, which won a seat less. Despite commanding the support of a majority of the MLAs, Mr Rawat, who too is 66-years-old, found the chief minister’s post eluding him. It was, instead, offered to Bahuguna, the MP from Tehri. The Congress government in the state has the backing of three BSP lawmakers and the lone Uttarakhand Kranti Dal legislator. Three independent legislators too have offered their support to the Congress government. Uttarakhand sends five members to the Lok Sabha, and the party had made a clean sweep in 2009. The BJP had drawn a blank.
