  • Action Jackson

    Action Jackson

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam, Manasvi Mamgai
    Direction: Prabhudheva
    Genre: Action Comedy
    Duration: 2 hours 24 minutes

Story: A Don’s sister falls for his most trusted lieutenant. When he refuses to reciprocate, she vows to destroy him. Her lust and his scorn form the crux of this puerile potboiler.

Review: Welcome Vishy (Ajay), a self-styled Robin Hood, who picks up street fights with the local goons to earn himself some mega-bucks. He finds support from his chaat-eating sidekick Moosa (Kunaal Roy Kapur) who is more farcical than funny, part farce. Robin Hood’s life takes an amorous twist when he bumps into Khushi (Sonakshi), a ‘luckless’ media professional. If it is not corny enough to have the girl and the man’s names rhyming (Vishy and Khushi), things get completely illogical when the girl starts chasing the boy because she has spied on him semi-nude in her toilet break.

This film writer’s imagination is warped because Khushi is actually convinced that the hero’s half-naked presence is responsible for her changing fortunes. Want to tear your hair out in frustration? Wait, there’s more to add to this convoluted screenplay. Joining the confusion is one-glass-eyed don Xavier Fonseca (Anand Raj), who resides in Bangkok and deals in arms. His sexy sister Marina (Manasvi) falls in lust with her brother’s trusted associate AJ(can’t reveal his name, without giving away the suspense). Though Marina has the best car, clothes and cigarettes, she cannot canoodle with AJ because his heart lies with another pretty damsel Anusha (Yami).

Since hell hath no fury than a Marina scorned, the plot reigns mayhem as it moves from Pune to New Zealand, Bangkok to Austria and finally, to Mumbai with the hero being chased. Corrupt cops and identical twins tumble out of cupboards adding to the confusion. The action sequences have Tarantino’s Kill Bill influence. However, here the animation wipes jump out of nowhere almost startling you. Ajay romancing the sword in his bare-bodied avatar is exciting.

He pulls off the comic and the Bazooka killing-machine acts with ease. Sonakshi shimmies well to Himesh Reshammiya’s hit ditties — Keeda and Chichora Piya with Ajay, who tries to do better than stomp. Manasvi shows her shapely body in a bootylicious gangster song, while Yami charms with her girl next-door act. If you’re not looking for a mentally stimulating fare, enjoy this ride that is basically meant for the filmi keedas.

JULIA ROBERTS UNVEILED AS NEW FACE OF ‘GIVENCHY’

Julia Roberts has been appointed as the new face of Givenchy. The brand’s first shot of Spring 2015 campaign shows the 47-year-old actress in a black and white picture, boasting natural beauty in a sleek tuxedo, E! Online reported. While talking to Yahoo Style, creative director Riccardo Tisci revealed that Roberts, who’s a mother-of-three was his first choice for the campaign because she represented “such a mature woman.” He said that while people, generally saw the brand as “haute couture,” in Roberts he saw strength and beauty as an actress and an American woman, and he wanted to show the woman who was “beautiful, talented, but also unpretentious.” The ageless ‘Pretty Woman’ star too revealed that in a recent conversation with her sister, who wondered how she was being turned into a supermodel at almost 50. Roberts said that though she actually like the pictures showed her, she thought the shots were great and the clothes she wore in them would have the ones she would have chosen for herself.

2014 HAS BEEN AN AMAZING YEAR, SAYS ANGELINA JOLIE

Hollywood beauty Angelina Jolie has had an amazing 2014 after getting married and releasing her movie ‘Unbroken’. The 39-year-old actress-director is thrilled that her new movie ‘Unbroken’ is getting Oscar buzz. When asked if she’s had the best year of her life, she said, “Well, I hope that one is still to come. But it’s been an amazing year. I married my love, my son (Maddox) became a teenager and I got to bring this film to the world.” Meanwhile, the Oscar-winning actress wasn’t surprised she had to prove she should direct the World War II-set drama. “I fought hard for the opportunity. I’d directed only one other film, which was very small in comparison. I had to prove I could handle locations, the budget, balancing two plane crashes, the visual effects and the technical aspects. “I had not done anything like that before! I had to go to school quickly, then I pitched my little heart out,” she added.

  • Exodus: Gods and Kings

    Exodus: Gods and Kings

Cast: Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro, Ben Kingsley, María Valverde, Sigourney Weaver, Indira Varma
    Direction: Ridley Scott
    Genre: Action
    Duration: 2 hours 32 minutes

Story: Moses (Bale) learns about who he really is and leads 400,000 Hebrew slaves out of enslavement in Egypt to faraway Canaan. While battling his own self-doubt, he must also escape the wrath of the furious Pharaoh Ramses.

Review: We are introduced to a grown-up Moses (although his origins are helpfully explained to him later in the film) who lives in the palace of the Pharaoh Seti (Turturro) in the city of Memphis, along the River Nile. In this magnificent palace, where superstitions abound, Moses prefers pragmatism to ceremony. Moses is both brave and honest and Seti quite clearly favours him, even though Ramses (Edgerton) is actually Seti’s son by blood. Seti presents Moses and Ramses with two beautiful, ornate swords and tells them to look after one another on the battlefield as brothers would.

Later, in the thick of battle against the Hittites, Moses saves Ramses’s life. Then, when Moses visits the city of Pithom on an assignment, an elder, Nun (Kingsley), tells a disbelieving Moses who he really is. Soon after he returns to Memphis, Ramses inherits the throne and Moses is exiled. He settles down in a faraway land and marries Zipporah (Valverde, absolutely stunning) before having to embark on his monumental mission. While the visuals can only be described using superlatives, some bits involving interpersonal relationships could have been more developed. However, scenes involving Moses and Ramses are often electrifying.

So is the ‘burning bush’ sequence. The battles will take your breath away – crashing chariots, splintering spears, flaming arrows, metal against metal and more gore than you’d expect to see. Ramses’s cold-blooded disregard for human life is shocking. But then the Ten Plagues unleashed on the Egyptians by God as punishment are unrelenting in their devastation. The Nile runs blood red, overflowing with dead fish. Masses of flies spread dread and disease. Clouds of locusts ravage crops and a sinister shadow of death creeps across the accursed land like a cold hand. Exodus: Gods and Kings is ‘spectacle’ with a capital ‘S’ and in more ways than one, definitely epic.

Manali gets its first snowfall around mid December, when it transforms into a winter wonderland replete with snow-covered peaks, and a blanket of pristine white draped all across the hill station. With the stunning backdrop of the Himalayas, it offers the perfect balance between tranquility and adventure, making it one of the most popular hill destinations in northern India. Fringed by thick pine trees and the Beas river gurgling along, you can decide to spend your holiday doing nothing at all or pack in your itinerary with interesting activities.

For those who wish to partake in adventurous activities, there’s fishing, white water rafting, paragliding, skiing, mountaineering, and hiking in and around Manali. If you’re looking to go off the beaten path, try one of the packages organised by Trans Himalayan Adventures, which focus on healing and rejuvenation. Solang Valley is a good option for the kids, offering a bunch of fun winter sports including skiing.

    SHIMLA

One of the preferred winter destinations in the country, mostly for its proximity to the larger cities and its good mix of entertainment, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh is another great place to get snowed in. Plan your trip some time after the third week of December for guaranteed snowfall. Getting there is easy, take a flight, train or bus from any of the neighbouring cities of Delhi and Chandigarh, or then just hire a taxi and do the seven-hour-long drive at your convenience. In accommodation, there are options aplenty.

If you’re looking to pamper yourself, stay at the Oberoi Cecil or the heritage Woodville Palace, or downsize your budget with umpteen number of mid-range and budget hotels dotting the town. There’s lots to do here. Some of the major tourist spots include the Viceregal Lodge & Botanical Gardens, the Ridge which offers beautiful views of the hills, the Mall for a spot of shopping, cafes and restaurants, Chadwick Falls, Elysium Hill, the Dorje Drag Monastery, Christ Church & St. Michael’s Cathedral, Jakhoo Temple, Sankat Mochan and Tara Devi. A perfect white getaway which is enchantingly beautiful and entertaining too.

    GULMARG

If you’re looking for a destination which is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is adventurous, then look no further than Kashmir. The Kashmir valley is considered heaven on earth, and when it’s blanketed in snow, it exudes a charm few other places do. The tiny and isolated hill village of Gulmarg is situated at the western extremity of the Himalayas in a subsidiary range called the Pir Panjals. Lying about 50 kilometres from Srinagar, it can be easily accessed by tourist buses, taxis and even by air.

    31

Owing to its location, Gulmarg gets some of the heaviest snowfalls in the Himalayas and has earned the distinction of being the best ski resort in the country. So once you’ve feasted your eyes on all the beauty, immerse yourself in some activity by hitting the slopes. Catering to both beginners and pros, skiing here can be one of the most powerful experiences. For the more mild adventure enthusiasts, there’s the option of sledging, cable-car rides and snow boarding. Ski season starts mid December and lasts till the beginning of April. As for accommodation, there are various options. From state-owned huts and cottages, and beautifully appointed midrange hotels like Nedous Hotel, to luxury accommodation at Hotel Highlands Park, there’s something to suit every budget. In addition, Gulmarg offers several other sites of interest for tourists. It has the highest golf course in the world, the frozen Alpine lake of Alpather, the Baba Reshi shrine and the Gulmarg Biosphere Reserves.

    JAISALMER

A magnificent fort looming over the city, picture-postcard vistas of sand dunes and an array of illuminated sandstone buildings—Jaisalmer is nothing short of a scene straight out of Arabian Nights. Once a sleepy desert city, Jaisalmer now attracts many couples, honeymooners and families by dint of its erstwhile royal splendour. The Jaisalmer Fort (also known as the Golden Fort of Rajasthan) is the most splendid attraction of the city, perched on an elevated patch looking over the city. Surrounded by numerous golden-hued shrines, the Gadsisar Lake is ideal for an evening picnic or a short paddleboat ride.

The city’s most popular activity is taking a camel ride over the desert sands; best enjoyed at sunrise and sunset, the ride gives an insight into Rajasthan’s rural life and stunning vistas of the horizon. Jaisalmer’s winding alleys are home to vibrant markets from where you can pick up quintessential Rajasthani souvenirs. Rajasthani cuisine, famous for its spicy veg curries, mouth-watering meat dishes and delectable sweets is the icing on the cake.

    WAYANAD

Located between the Kannur and Kozhikode districts in Kerala, Wayanad is a sparkling green emerald sprawled across the slopes of the Western Ghats. The monsoons persevere here—the rainy season starts in June and lasts all the way till mid November—during which the already lush landscape takes on an even more vibrant shade of green, and everything is washed squeaky clean. The most enjoyable way to experience it is by checking into a jungle resort—even better if it has a treehouse. During the occasional dry spells in between, venture out and enjoy everything else the region has to offer. Wayanad ploughs tourists with some interesting prehistoric archaeological sites, tea plantations and thick forests, and is home to some of the oldest (and most insulated) tribes in India.

  • 22 STATES, UTS SUPPORT BILL TO PREVENT ‘HONOUR KILLINGS’

22 STATES, UTS SUPPORT BILL TO PREVENT ‘HONOUR KILLINGS’

NEW DELHI (TIP): The government has initiated the process of drafting a law against honour killings by treating crimes in the name of honour as a separate category of offences. The moves comes after 22 states, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh (UT), supported the recommendations of the Law Commission of India to treat honour crimes as a standalone offence. Law Minister Sadananda Gowda said in Parliament today that the government would, after considering the comments from states, hold consultations on the enactment of the legislation against honour crimes. “After considering the responses of all states and UTs and consultations with stakeholders, the policy decision to enact the legislation on the subject will be taken. It would be difficult to fix a timeline but the department has initiated the process of implementation of the report of the Law Commission in this respect,” Gowda said.

The Law Commission had in its 242nd Report on “Prevention of Interference with the Freedom of Matrimonial Alliances in the Name of Honour and Tradition” recommended a strict law against honour crimes being perpetuated by community panchayats working by different names in different parts of the country. The proposal to bring the law was first initiated during Congress-led UPA-II which had formed a Group of Ministers to make recommendations. The GOM never presented its report and was disbanded once its chairman – Pranab Mukherjee – proceeded to become President. At that time, Haryana had opposed the move. The BJP government, after coming to power, circulated the proposal again and 22 states, including Haryana (which now has a BJP government), have supported the recommendations of the Law Commission.

Apart from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Chandigarh, the states that have backed the law are: Andhra, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and the UTs of Dadra and Nagar Haveli; Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry. The responses of the remaining states are awaited. Consensus of states on the law to curb honour crimes is critical because the subject falls in List III (Concurrent List) of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution and the Centre alone cannot legislate on it.

  • SC upholds benefits to disabled soldiers

SC upholds benefits to disabled soldiers

New Delhi (TIP): In a single stroke, the Supreme Court has dismissed more than 800 multiple appeals which were filed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) against judgments of the Armed Forces Tribunal that had granted benefits to disabled soldiers. The Supreme Court’s orders will enhance the quantum of disability pension of a large number of soldiers. The Fifth Pay Commission had introduced the concept of “broad-banding” disability pension to minimise medical subjectivity and rationalise mistakes of medical boards. Under these provisions, those having a disability assessed below 50% will get benefits applicable for 50 per cent disability, those having 50-75% disability will get benefits applicable for 75% while disability above 75% will be considered as 100% for the purpose of fixing pension. However while implementing the concept, the MoD granted it only to post-1996 personnel invalided out on medical grounds and not to pre-1996 or those who were released with disability pension on superannuation or on completion of the term of engagement, though all categories were equally afflicted with the problem of medical subjectivity. Military pension rules, however, provided that defence personnel released in a low-medical category were deemed to be invalided out of service for purposes of disability pension.

  • Cong disrupts RS over attempts to ‘glorify’ Nathuram Godse

Cong disrupts RS over attempts to ‘glorify’ Nathuram Godse

NEW DELHI (TIP): Congress Rajya Sabha MP Hussain Dalwai on December 11strongly condemned the alleged efforts to “glorify” Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse and demanded arrest of those involved in such exercise. “A person who has created an example of non-violence in the world and whom we called Father of the Nation was killed by Nathuram Godse,” Dalwai said outside Parliament. “Now some people are observing Nathuram Godse Shourya Diwas on November 15. It is absolutely wrong and the government should arrest them.

Why is the government silent on the issue?” he asked. Dalwai said he has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding action against persons involved in “glorifying” Godse. “Gandhi is accepted by people from all walks of lives including workers, peasants, dalit and women. I have written a letter to the state Chief Minister demanding action against these people,” he said. Earlier in the day, Rajya Sabha witnessed uproarious scenes with members from Congress lodging strong protest against eulogising of Godse at a function held in Maharashtra earlier this month. Under attack from the opposition members, Government disapproved of any such event hailing Mahatma Gandhi’s killer but said no organisation should be defamed.

The Upper House saw two brief adjournments over the issue as Congress members protested holding placards in the aisles and raising slogans, while charging right-wing organisations with lending their support to it. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Dalwai (Cong) said he has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister over hosting the event attended by some religious leaders and former MLAs. “Mahatma Gandhi’s killer is being eulogised by hosting his ‘Shaurya Diwas’ in Maharashtra…These people talk of development, but are trying to create a rift in society,” he said, accusing the right-wing organisations of indulging in such things, including religious conversions that created tension in society.

Congress members created uproar over the issue and raised slogans while displaying placards of the event, even as Deputy Chairman P J Kurien tried to pacify the agitating members, asking them to take their seats and maintain peace. “Don’t make use of Zero Hour for this kind of display. This is gross indiscipline…To decide the culpability or otherwise, the courts are there, not me or you,” Kurien said. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “This is not acceptable. Mahatma Gandhi’s killer, whosoever it may be, we are against it…We do not accept any honour of Mahatma Gandhi’s killers.” As members continued their protest and the House witnessed acrimonious exchanges between both sides, Kurien adjourned the proceedings for 10 minutes just before noon.

But, similar scenes were witnessed when the House met at noon, forcing the Chair to adjourn it again for 15 minutes. When the House reassembled, Anand Sharma (Cong) said, “It is not acceptable that some one eulogises him. I hope neither the House nor the Parliamentary Affairs Minister will approve of such an action. Let the House speak in one voice and condemn it.” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said, “There is no question of eulogising such a person. We should leave the matter there, but defaming an organisation is not acceptable.” It was after this that normal proceedings resumed.

Punjab inks pact for high-speed internet in rural areas

CHANDIGARH (TIP): In a bid to provide high speed internet connectivity with unlimited bandwidth in rural areas, the Punjab government has initiated a project to connect all villages with the optical fibre network. A spokesman from the governance reforms department, on December 11, said the state cabinet had already approved provision of right of way for implementation of the project, which would indirectly boost the state GDP. A tripartite MoU had been signed between Punjab, the Union government and Bharat Broadband Network Ltd (BBNL) to transform villages into e-villages under the project. He said the initiative would help bridge the digital gap between rural and urban areas and provide e-services to gram panchayats. As a pilot project, BBNL selected 67 blocks covering 6,000 villages to connect with Optical Fiber Network in the first phase. Divulging the project implementation plan, he said the project would be completed by utilizing existing fibers of PSUs like BSNL, Railtel and power grid besides laying incremental fibre to connect to gram panchayats, wherever necessary.

Woman’s death: Rampal sent to judicial custody

HISAR (TIP): A local court on December 11 sent the selfstyled godman Rampal to judicial custody in connection with the death of a woman follower in his ashram during the recent standoff between his disciples and police. Rampal was produced before the court of judicial magistrate (Hisar) Prateek Jain on Thursday after the completion of his three-day police remand relating to a murder case registered against him on November 19 in Barwala police station. Police sought 5-day police remand in connection with the death of a woman who along with four other women and an infant were killed during the over 10 day standoff in Satlok Ashram last month. The court had sent Rampal in 3-day police remand in this case on December 8. The case was registered against Rampal and some of his followers under Section 302 of the IPC (murder). The 63-year-old controversial godman was arrested from his ashram at Barwala in Hisar on November 19. He was produced before the Punjab and Haryana high court a day after his arrest in connection with a contempt case and was sent to police custody for five days by a court.

  • CAMERON CONDEMS CIA’S BRUTALITY

    CAMERON CONDEMS CIA’S BRUTALITY

LONDON (TIP): America’s closest allies – Britain has strongly condemned the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) use of brutality and deception to interrogate “terror suspects” post-9/11 attacks as made public by a Senate Intelligence Committee report. US president Barack Obama’s close friend – British prime minister David Cameron reacted strongly against the report in which committee chair Dianne Feinstein said the techniques used by the CIA were “far more brutal than people were led to believe”. Cameron said, “Let’s be clear: torture is wrong. Torture is always wrong.

Those of us who want to see a safer, more secure world, who want to see this extremism defeated, we won’t succeed if we lose our moral authority, if we lose the things that make our systems work and our countries successful. So we should be very clear about that.” Cameron added: “Now, obviously after 9/11 there were things that happened that were wrong, and we should be clear about the fact that they were wrong. In Britain we have had the Gibson Inquiry, and that inquiry has now produced a series of questions that the Intelligence and Security Committee will look at.

But I’m satisfied that our system is dealing with all of these issues, and I as Prime Minister have issued guidance to all of our agents and others working around the world about how they have to handle these issues in future. So I’m confident this issue has been dealt with from the British perspective, and I think I can reassure the public about that. But overall, we should be clear: torture is wrong.” Britain also expressed concern over the harsh CIA interrogation tactics which included threats and torture as detainees were forced to stay awake for over a week at a time, while several detainees suffered from “hallucinations, paranoia, insomnia and attempts at selfharm and self-mutilation”.

The report revealed that two contract psychologists devised the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques and played a central role in the operation, assessments, and management of the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program. By 2005, the CIA contracted with two psychologists to develop, operate, and assess its interrogation operations. The psychologists’ prior experience was at the US Air Force Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) school. Neither psychologist had any experience as an interrogator, nor did either have specialized knowledge of al-Qaida, a background in counterterrorism or any relevant cultural or linguistic expertise.

On the CIA’s behalf, the contract psychologists developed theories of interrogation based on “learned helplessness” and developed the list of enhanced techniques that was approved for use against Abu Zubaydah and subsequent CIA detainees. The psychologists personally conducted interrogations of some of the CIA’s most significant detainees using these techniques. In 2005, the psychologists formed a company specifically for the purpose of conducting their work with the CIA. Shortly thereafter, the CIA outsourced virtually all aspects of the program. In 2006, the value of the CIA’s base contract with the company formed by the psychologists with all options exercised was in excess of $180 million; the contractors received $81 million prior to the contract’s termination in 2009. To produce the report, the Committee spent five years reading and analyzing more than 6.3 million pages of CIA documents.

The review produced a more than 6,000 page review that was condensed into a 525-page summary the committee released on Tuesday. A glimpse of techniques details how the CIA employed sleep deprivation to wear down victims: keeping them awake for 180 hours usually standing or in stress positions. Other techniques included rectal rehydration, ice water baths and threatening detainees with threats to harm detainees’ families, including threats to “sexually abuse the mother of a detainee”. The Committee however concluded that the use of the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques was not an effective means of obtaining accurate information or gaining detainee cooperation.

Chinese social media compare bus assault on Henan woman with Nirbhaya case

BEIJING (TIP): Chinese social media users have pulled out details of the December 2012 Nirbhaya case in New Delhi to draw comparisons with assault and molestation of a woman in Henan province in central China. Microblogging sites like Weibo and other Internet platforms are giving vent to angry Chinese protesting against the thrashing and molestation of a 22-year-old girl inside a moving bus last week. The anger is largely directed at bus passengers and the driver who did nothing to stop a 51-year-old man from molesting the girl in public, and beating her up when she resisted. She lost consciousness during the assault but the driver did not stop the bus despite the huge commotion. “I am furious with the bus driver.

Why didn’t he respond to her desperate cries for help?” asked the girl’s father in Dahe News in Henan, expressing strong disapproval of passengers refusing to help her during the attack on December 5. The girl had managed to call her father before the attacker snatched her mobile phone and pinned her to the bus seat. The assailant and two of his accomplices dragged her out after the driver stopped under pressure from passengers. Chinese media routinely report rapes and molestations in India, projected as a country notorious for crimes against women. This is why netizens with a fair knowledge of the Nirbhaya case in Delhi are recalling the December 12 rape and drawing comparisons. The difference, they said, is there were no passengers in the Delhi bus, and it was being driven by an accomplice of the assailant. Also the Henan girl was unaccompanied. Anger was directed at the lenient punishment to the assailant: 15 days of administrative detention. But the bus driver lost his job.

AL JAZEERA JOURNALIST DIES IN SYRIA

BEIRUT (TIP): A correspondent working for Al Jazeera Arabic died while covering battles in southern Syria, the pan-Arab news network said on its website on December 11. He was the fourth Syrian journalist to die this week in Syria. More than 70 journalists have been killed while reporting on the Syrian conflict, which is now in its fourth year, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Mahran Al Deeri was covering fighting in the Sheikh Masakin area of Deraa province between rebels and the government. He died when his car hit a rebel fighter’s vehicle after he had turned off his headlights to avoid being targeted, Qatar-based Al Jazeera quoted family members as saying. The vast majority of journalists killed in Syria have been local, CPJ says.

  • South Africa to sign fuel deals to tackle power crisis

South Africa to sign fuel deals to tackle power crisis

CAPE TOWN (TIP): South Africa will increase diesel and gas imports and sign a private sector coal-fired power plant deal as it seeks to stem chronic electricity shortages, the cabinet said on December 12. South Africa has suffered its worst power shortages since 2008 this month due to creaking infrastructure, power plant failures and emergency maintenance. State utility Eskom warned that if it didn’t continue to implement rolling blackouts, the entire grid could collapse as it lost up to a third of its 42,000 megawatt power generation capacity. “Cabinet remains concerned over the disruptive effect the recent power outages are having on the daily lives of South Africans and its impact on households and businesses across the country,” minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe told reporters.

A private sector-led coal-fired power plant programme will be launched by January 2015, which should add 2,500 megawatts to the grid, Radebe said, without giving details on when the electricity would be delivered. South Africa will increase gas imports to supply its under-fuelled power plants, which should help add 500-2,500 megawatts to the grid, the cabinet said. The gas is mostly expected to come from neighbouring Mozambique. The government will also sign an agreement with the Strategic Fuel Fund and Transnet Ports Authority to improve diesel supplies to power stations, a problem Eskom has said is a major constraint on electricity output. The cabinet said it also had turnaround plans for struggling stateowned South African Airways (SAA), which will now be run by the treasury, rather than the public enterprise ministry.

  • 423 criminals from India living in Britain

423 criminals from India living in Britain

LONDON ()TIP): Around 423 criminals from India are presently living in Britain. Data revealed by Britain’s National Audit Office has shown that as of March 2014, 10,650 criminals from overseas have been living in UK. Shockingly, between January 2009 and March 2014, 151 foreign national offenders (FNOs) left prison without being considered for deportation. One in six FNOs in the community – 760 convicted criminals – had absconded with 400 of them had been missing since before 2010.

Around 58 of them have been classed as “high harm” individuals including rapists, murderers and pedophiles. Poland dominated the list of top 10 nationalities of foreign offenders living in UK – 898 followed by Ireland 778, Jamaica 711, Romania 588, Pakistan 522, Lithuania 518 and Nigeria 468. India stands next with the number of offenders living in UK increasing from 402 to 423 between 2013 and 2014. Figures from the Home Office show that there are more than 700 murderers and 500 rapists among nearly 12,000 foreign offenders in UK. The full list, entitled the Foreign National Offender Caseload include 775 murderers, 587 rapists, 155 child rapists and 15 convicted terrorists.

Also in the category of most serious offences are 99 other killers convicted of manslaughter and 228 paedophiles. The list also includes 88 criminals found guilty of attempted murder, 1,022 of serious violent assaults, 497 burglars, and 43 arsonists. NAO said “Removing FNOs from the UK continues to be inherently difficult and public bodies involved have been hampered in their efforts by a range of barriers, although poor administration has still played a part. The number and speed of removals can be restricted by law – typically the European Convention on Human Rights and EU law on the free movement of persons.” “Until recently, FNOs had 17 grounds for appeal that could delay removal.

Administrative factors also form barriers with some FNOs exploiting legal and medical obstacles to removal. Many overseas countries are unwilling to receive FNOs back home. However, lack of joint working and administration errors have often led to missed opportunities for removal.” Just over half of the 2,710 persons arrested for terrorism-related offences since September 11, 2001 self-declared their nationality as British or of British dual nationality (1,420, or 52%). Of the remaining persons arrested and excluding those who declared a dual nationality, the most frequently selfdeclared nationalities were: Algeria (156 persons), Pakistan (135), Iraq (117), Afghanistan (75), Iran (63), India (59), Turkey (50) and Somalia (49). The most frequent principal offences for persons convicted since September 11, 2001 under terrorism legislation were preparation for terrorist acts (25% of persons convicted), collection of information useful for an act of terrorism (16%) and failing to comply with duty at a port or border controls (12%).

In recent years the proportion of persons arrested who self-defined as either British or British dual nationality has been higher than the proportion since September 11, 2001. Of the 239 persons arrested for terrorismrelated offences in the year ending June 30, 2014, 181 (76%) self-defined as either British or British dual nationality.

PIO CHARGED WITH ENSLAVING 3 WOMEN FOR 30 YEARS IN UK

LONDON (TIP): A 73-year-old Indianorigin man,who headed an extremist Maoist sect in the UK, was on Thursday charged for enslaving three women in his home here for 30 years.Aravindan Balakrishnan is charged with 25 offences including false imprisonment, cruelty to a person under 16 years, indecent assault and rape. He will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on December 17.He is accused of imprisoning three women in a house in south London between 1983 and 2013 which came to light last year. After careful consideration,we have decided that there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and that a prosecution is in the public interest,” said Anthony Connell, senior prosecutor at the Crown Prosecution Service.Balakrishnan was arrested along with his wife, 67-year-old Chanda Pattni, in November 2013 over allegations that they held the women against their will for over 30 years. Pattni was released earlier when prosecutors decided there was “insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction”. It was alleged that a 69-year-old woman from Malaysia, a 57-year-old from Ireland and a 30-year-old Briton had been forced into domestic servitude by the couple after joining their extreme left wing cult.

Russian magnate buys, then returns Nobel prize

MOSCOW (TIP): Russia’s richest man says he is returning a Nobel prize he bought at auction for $4.7 million just days ago to the man who put it on the block: controversial American geneticist James Watson. Mining, steel and telecom magnate Alisher Usmanov revealed on December 9 he was the anonymous buyer of the 1962 Nobel Prize for Psychology or Medicine that Christie’s auctioned at Watson’s request on December 4 in New York. But in the same statement, Usmanov’s USM holding company said the oligarch — whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at $17.6 billion — will be returning the award to Watson.

Christie’s said it was the first Nobel award to be sold by a living laureate. “In my opinion, a situation in which an outstanding scientist sells a medal recognizing his achievements is unacceptable,” Usmanov said, voicing his satisfaction that “the medal will stay with the person who deserved it.” Usmanov said his largesse was justified by the contributions that the groundbreaking work on genetics by Watson and 1962 Nobel co-winners Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins have continued to make to science.

Russian tycoon Alisher Usmanov, buyer of James Watson’s Nobel Prize, giving it back to him

“James Watson is one of the greatest biologists in the history of mankind and his award for the discovery of DNA structure must belong to him.” Watson has been a controversial figure since a 2007 interview with London’s Sunday Times newspaper in which he suggested the intelligence of Africans was lower than that of other people. In resulting global uproar, Watson was shunned by many of his colleagues, and forced to resign from the Cold Spring Harbor laboratory in Long Island, New York.

Usmanov’s respect for the researcher has clearly not been dimmed by the flap. “Dr Watson’s work contributed to cancer research, the illness from which my father died,” Usmanov, 61, said of one of the many areas to which the 1953 discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA has been applied. The New York Times reported Watson saying the sale sought to restore his tarnished reputation. USM said Watson planned to donate proceeds from the sale of his Nobel to research institutions he’d worked with at the University of Chicago, Indiana University, Cambridge, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Usmanov described the outcome of his purchase as win-win all around. “It is important for me that the money that I spent on this medal will go to supporting scientific research, and the medal will stay with the person who deserved it. “I wouldn’t like the medal of the distinguished scientist to be an object on sale.”

  • SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB

    SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB

CONTD FROM Vol 8 ISSUE 48

    || 1 || THIRD MEHL: Whether he is young or old, the self-willed manmukh cannot escape hunger and thirst. The Gurmukhs are imbued with the Word of the Shabad; they are at peace, having lost their self-conceit. They are satisfied and satiated within; they never feel hungry again. O Nanak, whatever the Gurmukhs do is acceptable; they remain lovingly absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

    || 2 || PAUREE: I am a sacrifice to those Sikhs who are Gurmukhs. I behold the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of those who meditate on the Lord’s Name. Listening to the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises, I contemplate His virtues; I write His Praises on the fabric of my mind. I praise the Lord’s Name with love, and eradicate all my sins. Blessed, blessed and beauteous is that body and place, where my Guru places His feet.

    || 19 || SHALOK, THIRD MEHL: Without the Guru, spiritual wisdom is not obtained, and peace does not come to abide in the mind. O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the self-willed manmukhs depart, after having wasted their lives.

    || 1 || THIRD MEHL: All the Siddhas, spiritual masters and seekers search for the Name; they have grown weary of concentrating and focusing their attention.Without the True Guru, no one finds the Name; the Gurmukhs unite in Union with the Lord. Without the Name, all food and clothes are worthless; cursed is such spirituality, and cursed are such miraculous powers. That alone is spirituality, and that alone is miraculous power, which the Carefree Lord spontaneously bestows. O Nanak, the Lord’s Name abides in the mind of the Gurmukh; this is spirituality, and this is miraculous power.

    || 2 || PAUREE: I am a minstrel of God, my Lord and Master; every day, I sing the songs of the Lord’s Glorious Praises. I sing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises, and I listen to the Praises of the Lord, the Master of wealth and Maya. The Lord is the Great Giver; all the world is begging; all beings and creatures are beggars. O Lord, You are kind and compassionate; You give Your gifts to even worms and insects among the rocks. Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; as Gurmukh, he has become truly wealthy.

    || 20 || SHALOK, THIRD MEHL: Reading and studying are just worldly pursuits, if there is thirst and corruption within. Reading in egotism, all have grown weary; through the love of duality, they are ruined. He alone is educated, and he alone is a wise Pandit, who contemplates the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. He searches within himself, and finds the true essence; he finds the Door of Salvation. He finds the Lord, the treasure of excellence, and peacefully contemplates Him. Blessed is the trader, O Nanak, who, as Gurmukh, takes the Name as his only Support.

    || 1 || THIRD MEHL: Without conquering his mind, no one can be successful. See this, and concentrate on it. The wandering holy men are tired of of making pilgrimages to sacred shrines; they have not been able to conquer their minds. The Gurmukh has conquered his mind, and he remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord. O Nanak, this is how the filth of the mind is removed; the Word of the Shabad burns away the ego.

    || 2 || PAUREE: O Saints of the Lord, O my Siblings of Destiny, please meet with me, and implant the Name of the One Lord within me. O humble servants of the Lord, adorn me with the decorations of the Lord, Har, Har; let me wear the robes of the Lord’s forgiveness. Such decorations are pleasing to my God; such love is dear to the Lord. I chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, day and night; in an instant, all sins are eradicated. That Gurmukh, unto whom the Lord becomes merciful, chants the Lord’s Name, and wins the game of life.

    || 21 || SHALOK, THIRD MEHL: The filth of countless incarnations sticks to this mind; it has become pitch black. The oily rag cannot be cleaned by merely washing it, even if it is washed a hundred times. By Guru’s Grace, one remains dead while yet alive; his intellect is transformed, and he becomes detached from the world. O Nanak, no filth sticks to him, and he does not fall into the womb again.

    || 1 || THIRD MEHL: Kali Yuga is called the Dark Age, but the most sublime state is attained in this age. The Gurmukh obtains the fruit, the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises; this is his destiny, ordained by the Lord. O Nanak, by Guru’s Grace, he worships the Lord night and day; he chants the Lord’s Name, and remains absorbed in the Lord’s devotional worship.

    || 2 || PAUREE: O Lord, unite me with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, so that with my mouth, I may speak the sublime Word of the Guru’s Bani. I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and constantly chant the Lord’s Name; through the Guru’s Teachings, I enjoy the Lord’s Love constantly. I take the medicine of meditation on the Lord’s Name, which has cured all diseases and multitudes of sufferings. Those who do not forget the Lord, while breathing or eating – know them to be the perfect servants of the Lord. Those Gurmukhs who worship the Lord in adoration end their subservience to the Messenger of Death, and to the world.

    || 22 || SHALOK, THIRD MEHL: O man, you have been tormented by a nightmare, and you have passed your life in sleep. You did not wake to hear the Word of the True Guru’s Shabad; you have no inspiration within yourself. That body burns, which has no virtue, and which does not serve the Guru. I have seen that the world is burning, in egotism and the love of duality. O Nanak, those who seek the Guru’s Sanctuary are saved; within their minds, they meditate on the True Word of the Shabad.

    || 1 || THIRD MEHL: Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, the soul-bride is rid of egotism, and she is glorified. If she walks steadily in the way of His Will, then she is adorned with decorations. Her couch becomes beautiful, and she constantly enjoys her Husband Lord; she obtains the Lord as her Husband. The Lord does not die, and she never suffers pain; she is a happy soul-bride forever. O Nanak, the Lord God unites her with Himself; she enshrines love and affection for the Guru.

    || 2 || PAUREE: Those who conceal and deny their Guru, are the most evil people. O Dear Lord, let me not even see them; they are the worst sinners and murderers. They wander from house to house, with impure minds, like wicked, forsaken women. But by great good fortune, they may meet the Company of the Holy; as Gurmukhs, they are reformed. O Lord, please be kind and let me meet the True Guru; I am a sacrifice to the Guru.

    || 23 || SHALOK, THIRD MEHL: Serving the Guru, peace is produced, and then, one does not suffer in pain. The cycle of birth and death is brought to an end, and death has no power over at all. His mind is imbued with the Lord, and he remains merged in the True Lord. O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to those who walk in the Way of the True Guru’s Will.

    || 1 || THIRD MEHL: Without the Word of the Shabad, purity is not obtained, even though the soul-bride may adorn herself with all sorts of decorations. She does not know the value of her Husband Lord; she is attached to the love of duality. She is impure, and ill-mannered, O Nanak; among women, she is the most evil woman.

    || 2 || PAUREE: Be kind to me, Lord, that I might chant the Word of Your Bani. May I meditate on the Lord’s Name, chant the Lord’s Name, and obtain the profit of the Lord’s Name. I am a sacrifice to those who chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, day and night. May I behold with my eyes those who worship and adore my Beloved True Guru. I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has united me with my Lord, my friend, my very best friend.

    || 24 || SHALOK, FOURTH MEHL: The Lord loves His slaves; the Lord is the friend of His slaves. The Lord is under the control of His slaves, like the musical instrument under the control of the musician. The Lord’s slaves meditate on the Lord; they love their Beloved. Please, hear me, O God – let Your Grace rain over the whole world. The praise of the Lord’s slaves is the Glory of the Lord. The Lord loves His Own Glory, and so His humble servant is celebrated and hailed. That humble servant of the Lord meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the Lord, and the Lord’s humble servant, are one and the same. Servant Nanak is the slave of the Lord; O Lord, O God, please, preserve his honor.

    || 1 || FOURTH MEHL: Nanak loves the True Lord; without Him, he cannot even survive. Meeting the True Guru, one finds the Perfect Lord, and the tongue enjoys the sublime essence of the Lord.

    || 2 || PAUREE: Night and day, morning and night, I sing to You, Lord. All beings and creatures meditate on Your Name. You are the Giver, the Great Giver; we eat whatever You give us. In the congregation of the devotees, sins are eradicated. Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice, a sacrifice, a sacrifice, O Lord.

    || 25 || SHALOK, FOURTH MEHL: He has spiritual ignorance within, and his intellect is dull and dim; he does not place his faith in the True Guru. He has deceit within himself, and so he sees deception in all others; through his deceptions, he is totally ruined. The True Guru’s Will does not enter into his consciousness, and so he wanders around, pursuing his own interests. If He grants His Grace, then Nanak is absorbed into the Word of the Shabad.

    || 1 || FOURTH MEHL: The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; in the love of duality, their minds are unsteady. Night and day, they are burning; day and night, they are totally ruined by their egotism.Within them, is the total pitch darkness of greed, and no one even approaches them. They themselves are miserable, and they never find peace; they are born, only to die, and die again. O Nanak, the True Lord God forgives those, who focus their consciousness on the Guru’s feet.

    || 2 || PAUREE: That Saint, that devotee, is acceptable, who is loved by God. Those beings are wise, who meditate on the Lord. They eat the food, the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. They apply the dust of the feet of the Saints to their foreheads. O Nanak, they are purified, bathing in the sacred shrine of the Lord.

    || 26 || SHALOK, FOURTH MEHL: Within the Gurmukh is peace and tranquility; his mind and body are absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. He contemplates the Naam, he studies the Naam, and he remains lovingly absorbed in the Naam. He obtains the treasure of the Naam, and his anxiety is dispelled. Meeting with the Guru, the Naam wells up, and his thirst and hunger are completely relieved. O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, he gathers in the Naam.

    || 1 || FOURTH MEHL: One who is cursed by the True Guru, abandons his home, and wanders around aimlessly. He is jeered at, and his face is blackened in the world hereafter. He babbles incoherently, and foaming at the mouth, he dies. What can anyone do? Such is his destiny, according to his past deeds.Wherever he goes, he is a liar, and by telling lies, he not liked by anyone. O Siblings of Destiny, behold this, the glorious greatness of our Lord and Master, O Saints; as one behaves, so does he receive.

  • THE RAMAYANA

    THE RAMAYANA

contined from vol 8 issue 48

From his pierced and quivering bosom then the cruel dart I drew,
And he sorrowed for his parents as his spirit heavenward flew, Thus unconscious, holy father, I have slayed thy stainless son, Speak my penance, or in mercy pardon deed unknowing done!’ Slow and sadly by their bidding to the fatal spot I led, Long and loud bewailed the parents by the cold unconscious dead,
And with hymns and holy water they performed the funeral rite, Then with tears that burnt and withered,
spake the hermit in his might: ‘Sorrow for a son beloved is a father’s direst woe,
Sorrow for a son beloved, Dasa-ratha, thou shalt know! See the parents weep and perish, grieving for a slaughtered son,
Thou shalt weep and thou shalt perish for a loved and righteous son! Distant is the expiation,—but in fulness of the time, Dasa-ratha’s death in anguish cleanses Dasa-ratha’s crime!’ Spake the old and sightless prophet; then he made the funeral pyre, And the father and the mother perished in the lighted fire,
Years have gone and many seasons, and in fulness of the time,
Comes the fruit of pride and folly and the harvest of my crime! Rama eldest born and dearest, Lakshman true and faithful son, Ah! forgive a dying father and a cruel action done, Queen Kaikeyi, thou hast heedless brought on Raghu’s race this stain,
Banished are the guiltless children and thy lord and king is slain! Lay thy hands on mine, Kausalya, wipe thy unavailing tear, Speak a wife’s consoling accents to a dying husband’s ear,
Lay thy hands on mine, Sumitra, vision falls my closing eyes, And for bravo and banished Rama wings my spirit to the skies! Hushed and silent passed the midnight, feebly still the monarch sighed,
Blessed Kausalya and Sumitra, blest his banished sons, and died.

    THE MEETING OF THE BROTHERS

Sorrowing for his sire departed Bharat to Ayodhya came, But the exile of his brother stung his noble heart to flame, Scorning sin-polluted empire, travelling with each widowed queen,
Sought through wood and trackless jungle Chitra-kuta’s peaceful scene.
Royal guards and Saint Vasishtha loitered with the dames behind, Onward pressed the eager Bharat, Rama’s hermit-home to find, Nestled in a jungle thicket, Rama’s cottage rose in sight,
Thatched with leaves and twining branches, reared by Lakshman’s faithful might.
Faggots hewn of gnarléd branches, blossoms culled from bush and tree. Coats of bark and russet garments,
kusa spread upon the lea, Store of horns and branching antlers, fire-wood for the dewy night,– Spake the dwelling of a hermit suited for a hermit’s rite. “May the scene,” so Bharat uttered, “by the righteous rishi told, Markalvati’s rippling waters, Chitrakuta’s summit bold,
Mark the dark and trackless forest where the untamed tuskers roam, And the deep and hollow caverns where the wild beasts make their home, Mark the spacious wooded uplands, wreaths of smoke obscure the sky,
Hermits feed their flaming altars for their worship pure and high. Done our weary work and wand’ring,
righteous Rama here we meet, Saint and king and honoured elder! Bharat bows unto his feet,
Born a king of many nations, he hath forest refuge sought, Yielded throne and mighty kingdom for a hermit’s humble cot, Honour unto righteous Rama, unto Sita true and bold, Theirs be fair Kosala’s empire,
crown and sceptre, wealth and gold! Stately Sal and feathered palm-tree on the cottage lent their shade.
Strewn upon the sacred altar was the grass of kusa spread, Gaily on the walls suspended hung two bows of ample height, And their back with gold was pencilled, bright as INDRA’s bow of might, Cased in broad unfailing quivers arrows shone like light of day, And like flame-tongued fiery serpents cast a dread and lurid ray,
Resting in their golden scabbards lay the sword of warriors bold, And the targets broad and ample bossed with rings of yellow gold, Glove and gauntlet decked the cottage safe from fear of hostile men,
As from creatures of the forest is the lion’s lordly den! Calm in silent contemplation by the altar’s sacred fire, Holy in his pious purpose though begirt by weapons dire,
Clad in deer-skin pure and peaceful, poring on the sacred flame, In his bark and hermit’s tresses like an anchorite of fame, Lion-shouldered, mighty-arméd, but with gentle lotus eye.
Lord of wide earth ocean-girdled, but intent on penance high, Godlike as the holy BRAHMA,
on a skin of dappled deer Rama sat with meek-eyed Sita, faithful Lakshman loitered near! “Is this he whom joyous nations called to fair Ayodhya’s throne, Now the friend of forest-rangers wandering in the woods alone,
Is this he who robed in purple made Ayodhya’s mansions bright.. Now in jungle bark and deer-skin clad as holy anchorite, Is this be whose wreathéd ringlets fresh and holy fragrance shed, Now a hermit’s matted tresses cluster round his royal head, Is this he whose royal yajnas filled the earth with righteous fame,
Now inured to hermit’s labour by the altar’s sacred flame, Is this he whose brow and forehead royal gem and jewel graced, Heir to proud Kosala’s empire, eldest, noblest, and the best!” Thus lamented pious Bharat,
    for his heart was anguish-rent,
As before the feet of Rama he in loving homage bent, “Arya!” in his choking accents this was all that Bharat said, “Arya!” spake the young Satrughna and he bent his holy head! Rama to his loving bosom raised his brothers from his feet, Ah, too deep is love for utterance when divided brothers meet, Faithful Guha, brave Sumantra, bowed to Rama’s righteous feet,
And a joy and mingled sadness filled the hermit’s calm retreat!

  • MAKE YOUR ARRANGED MARRIAGE WORK

    MAKE YOUR ARRANGED MARRIAGE WORK

Match, set, go… easier said than done. Here we list tips on ways to understand your partner better They say marriages are made in heaven. But then, there are also those made here on earth. Though an arranged marriage may feel like a prehistoric concept, such matches are still prevalent in society. Whether you marry someone you’ve fallen in love with, or someone your parents have chosen, as a couple you are bound to go through some ups and downs. It’s just that if it’s an arranged marriage, it may take you a tad longer to understand the thought process of your partner. If you are about to enter into an arranged marriage, here are some pointers you need to keep in mind:

    Pre-marital jitters

Pre-marital jitters are very common among couples who opt for an arranged marriage. And if you’re experiencing them, ask yourself what is causing the anxiety. Among the most prominent reasons is the fear of sharing space and adjusting to a relatively unknown partner. Then, of course, is the fear of how to deal with a new family; how much you’d have to change your behaviour to adapt to their thoughts and habits. The best way to overcome this problem is by interacting frequently with your partner. It will put you at ease with your partner and also improve the intimacy between the two of you.

    Never complain

An arranged marriage means more responsibilities and expectations. Both partners are under pressure to make the marriage work. Your partner may not share all your likes and dislikes and his/her family may not follow the same values as yours. You may be constantly corrected about the way things are done in this house. Relax! Adjustment is the name of the game. Have a frank talk with your partner, list out your anxieties and figure out a way to do things without antagonising your new family. In the initial days of your marriage, don’t take rude remarks or the seemingly harsh moves of your partner too seriously. Also, don’t adopt the tit for tat philosophy. Stay away from troublemakers and look for allies. Also, don’t complain or sound whiny to your partner. Remember, he/she is just as confused and nervous as you are.

    The magic of love

Love is that essential ingredient that can help both of you overcome hurdles. If love at first sight hasn’t happened, don’t worry. It may take time, but you will grow to love each other. Even if you’re in love already, don’t expect your partner to immediately reciprocate the feelings. Give him/her time and work on how you can earn his/her love. Be patient and don’t get frustrated every time your partner says or does something wrong. Remember, marriage is like a whirlpool which takes one from a carefree world to a world filled with commitment and sacrifice; a world with love as its backbone

  • What men don’t tell you

In a bid to redefine feminism, Hollywood actress Emma Watson touched upon gender issues that affect men and never get spoken of. Men, just like women, are bound by an image in the society, which portrays them as a provider and as one who shows no sign of weakness. Depression, sadness and tears are never seen as part of man’s makeup. And if he does exhibit any of those signs, he’s looked down upon by family and friends. Unlike women, who choose to speak out, men do the opposite — they ignore the signs, which result in psychosomatic and mental illnesses, addictions to substances and suicide in a increasing number of cases. Let’s take a look at some of the issues that men are afraid to talk about…

    Domestic violence on the rise

In most cases, men have been seen as perpetrators of violence — physical or mental. However, Mumbai-based psychologist, Dr Harish Shetty, says, “I have seen several cases in my three decade long career of men being the affected party. Domestic violence has increased in families.Men are beaten by teenage children and by spouses. They are emotionally bashed at the workplace by their bosses. There are instances where friends of their girlfriend come and bash them when things go bad, but these things go unsaid. They suffer in silence.” This often leads to a vicious cycle of ailments, depression and psychosomatic illnesses like ulcers, heart related diseases and diabetes. “Men don’t seek help when they are depressed, irritable or angry. They either fall prey to addictions or commit suicide,” adds Dr Shetty, who says that more men commit suicide than women.

    Depression sets in

A direct cause of the increasing pressures that men face is depression. City-based psychologist Dr Yusuf Matcheswala says that while the occurrence of depression is common in men, they do not realise that they are suffering from it. “Men being men, feel they will be perceived as weak if they seek help from a psychologist and don’t want to accept there is any weakness in them. Even though it’s okay for men to be metrosexual, do manicures, pedicures and wear strawberry lip balm, sadly, seeking help is not,” says Dr Matcheswala. Seeking help can sometimes cause complications. “Men become quieter and lose interest in life; they begin lying about their jobs. They tend to eat more, drink more alcohol and crib about office all the time. They avoid responsibilities and feel worthless and hopeless,” says Dr Shetty, adding that these problems can be avoided if there is enough awareness. “A simple trip to a friendly neighbourhood counsellor can do the trick,” he adds.

    Sexual exploitation

An alarming number of young boys find themselves a victim of sexual exploitation. Dr Shetty says that unless those who are exploited seek help and attain closure, the effects of such trauma can be lasting. “I have seen cases where men, who were assaulted when they were young, lose interest in marriage. At times, boys who’ve been abused sexually, grow up with an unhealthy idea of sex.” Such experiences scar a person for life and prevent them from leading a productive life.

    Fatherhood blues

The pressures of modern life can take a toll on men and increase if they have a family to support. In a fast-paced city like Mumbai, the struggle and stress starts with the morning commute and continues through the day, with work pressures mounting. With the onus of financial responsibility and upkeep of the family on him, a man has to keep it all together. In Mumbai, members of the Save Our Family Association meet every Sunday to talk about these issues and share their problems. Says a member, Jinesh Zaveri, “We see cases where fathers are denied rights to meet their children after a divorce. We listen to them, console them, and suggest the best possible course of action. These men are so affected that initially, they barely speak and are tight-lipped.

  • DRINK WARM WATER WITH LIME TO STAY HEALTHY

DRINK WARM WATER WITH LIME TO STAY HEALTHY

We have all heard it somewhere or the other that drinking warm water with the juice of one lemon, is beneficial for health. Here is delving into the reasons…

    Helps your digestive system

Warm lime water on an empty stomach early in the morning helps stimulate the gastrointestinal tract. Digestion improves, heartburn is reduced and it helps in the process of elimination.

    Detoxifies liver

Lemon juice has citric acid, which helps the enzymes to function better. It also stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification.

    Works on your pH level

The acidity in our body can be harmful and lemon water can help reduce this. Though lemon has citric acid, the nutrients and minerals in it are alkaline in nature. Citric acid is not a strong acid and so, is easily removed from our bodies by elimination processes like perspiration. Lemon, however, stimulates the formation of calcium carbonate that neutralises other strong acids in the body. This is helpful, especially if your diet is heavy in proteins like meat and cheese. Experts say lemon can help change the pH balance of the blood and can also help in dealing with urinary tract infections.

    Strengthens your immune system

All citrus foods are a storehouse of vitamin C. This vitamin is known to fight colds and is good for your immune system. Lemons also have potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function and controls blood pressure.

    Clears and freshens your skin

Experts say that vitamin C is great for youthful skin, because it helps in the production of collagen. Its antioxidants revive dull skin and keep it healthy. Warm lemon water removes toxins from the blood stream. Also, diluted lemon juice, when applied to blemishes, can actually help lighten them.

    Battles bad breath

Lemon juice battles bad breath by keeping bacteria away.

    Aids in weight loss

Lemon juice in the morning fights food craving. Also, it has been found earlier that people who maintain an alkaline diet tend to lose weight more quickly than others.

Do not overdo the lemon bit

Do not overdo the lemon. Just because one lemon helped you lose two kilos, squeezing four in your juice will not help you lose eight! Lemon has corrosive properties too and your tooth enamel may suffer.

    Note to remember:

Adding a little honey to your lemon juice makes it more palatable and also battles phlegm and helps rid your body of mucous.

    Never:

Use bottled lemon juice. Only the natural lemon is beneficial.

    Always:

Rinse your mouth with plain water after you drink lemon juice.

  • Citrus juices rich in antioxidants

    Citrus juices rich in antioxidants

Orange juice and juices from other citrus fruits could be much healthier than previously thought as researchers found that these are ten times richer in antioxidant content than what current methods estimate. High content of antioxidants in one’s diet help reduce harmful free radicals in our body. “The antioxidant activity is, on average, ten times higher than that which everyone thought up until now,” said Jose Angel Rufian Henares, professor at the University of Granada in Spain.

The new technique to measure antioxidant content called ‘global antioxidant response’ (GAR) shows that this property has been undervalued in other food as well. The results suggest that tables on the antioxidant capacities of food products that dieticians and health authorities use must be revised. The method includes assessments of various physical and chemical parameters, such as colour, fluorescence and the relationship between the concentrations analysed and compounds indicators such as furfural. Upon applying the technique to commercial and natural orange, mandarin, lemon and grapefruit juices, it has been proved that their values greatly increase. With the help of this method, scientists have also created a mathematical model in order to classify juices according to their natural and storage conditions, which ensures that the correct raw materials and sterilisation and pasteurisation processes are used.

E-cigarettes are less addictive than tobacco cigarettes, finds a research, adding weight to the argument that vaping could help quit smoking. “We found that e-cigarettes appear to be less addictive than tobacco cigarettes in a large sample of long-term users,” said Jonathan Foulds, professor of public health sciences and psychiatry at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. The popularity of e-cigarettes (e-cigs), which typically deliver nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and flavourings through inhaled vapour, has increased in the past five years.

While the long-term effects on health and nicotine dependence are unknown, Foulds pointed out, “We might actually need e-cigarettes that are better at delivering nicotine because that is what is more likely to help people quit.” While carrying out the study, the researchers developed an online survey, including questions designed to assess previous dependence on cigarettes and almost identical questions to assess current dependence on e-cigs. More than 3,500 current users of e-cigs who were former tobacco cigarette smokers participated in the survey. The researchers found that people with all the characteristics of a more dependent e-cig user still had a lower e-cig dependence score than their tobacco cigarette dependence score. “We think this is because they are getting less nicotine from the e-cigs than they were getting from tobacco cigarettes,” Foulds explained. “Any common sense analysis says that e-cigs are much less toxic. And our paper shows that they appear to be much less addictive, as well,” he added.
