4 Kerala athletes attempt suicide, one dies

THIRUVANANTHAPURA (TIP): A promising 17-year-old rowing athlete, training with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Alappuzha, died early on May 7, hours after she consumed poisonous fruit following harassment by seniors at her hostel.

The rower – identified as Aparna Ramabhadran from Aryad in Alappuzha district – had, along with three other rowers in the centre, entered into an apparent suicide pact on Wednesday. Aparna had participated in the 35th Junior National Rowing Championship in Lucknow in 2014.

Three other rowers, all aged 17, are in hospital with the condition of one reported as critical. Unconfirmed reports said one of the three girls was a National Games gold-winning rowing athlete.

Amid a flurry of investigations and announcements of monetary relief, the relatives of the rowers have raised the pitch of their protest claiming that the girls were victims of relentless “physical and mental” harassment by trainers and seniors in the sports centre. The girls had consumed “othalanga” (Cerbera odollam), a locally found poisonous fruit, at about 3 pm on Wednesday and were found unconscious in a hostel room at 7 pm.

They were taken to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. A suicide note was recovered from the hostel. Alappuzha North Police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Ernakulam Range IG M R Ajithkumar said a Crime Branch DySP will head the investigation into the incident. The police said the girls – all rowing athletes undergoing training in the SAI water sport centre at Punnamada – were traumatised after their hostel warden and senior inmates, who “found out” that they had consumed beer, confronted them.

“According to statements given by the girls late on Wednesday, their action was the result of mental trauma over the incident. But at the moment, the investigation is not directed at any individual,” M K Ramesan, sub-inspector, Alappuzha North, told Deccan Herald.

In the suicide note, the girls are learnt to have named the seniors who harassed them over a “minor mistake”. One of Aparna’s relatives said the girls were repeatedly harassed and were also forced to wash seniors’ clothes.

In New Delhi, Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal promised the ‘strictest possible action’ if any official from SAI is found guilty of aiding or abetting the attempted suicide by four female trainees at the SAI Centre in Alappuzha, leading to the death of one of the girls.

“The young girl who has died was a very promising sportsperson. It is a big loss to the country in general and Sports Authority of India and sports fraternity in particular. I convey my condolences to the bereaved family. We will give all possible help to the bereaved family,” Sonowal said in a statement. “While the law will take its own course, at this stage I would only like to say that if anyone from Sports Authority of India is found guilty in connection with this tragic incident, strictest possible action will be taken against him or her.” SAI Director General Injeti Srinivas, who was intimated about the incident on Wednesday night, and has left for Kerala, called it shocking. “I will first look into the medical treatment of the three girls in the ICU, meet with the parents and convey the highest assurances to them of doing justice in every manner and extending all possible support,” he said.

  • SHIV SENA MP GETS EC NOTICE FOR HIS REMARKS ON MUSLIMS

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Election Commission on May 7 issued a show-cause notice to Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut for his April 12 remark that Muslims should be stripped of voting rights.

The poll panel said his comment, made in an editorial published in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamna, prima facie violated the model code of conduct in force then for the by-poll in Vandre East and Tasgaon Kavathe Mahankali assembly constituencies of Maharashtra.

Raut has been asked to file his reply to the show-cause notice by 1 pm on May 11.

According to the commission, his remark suggesting that Muslims should be disenfranchised prima facie violated sub para (1) of Para 1 of the poll code, which restrains party leaders and candidates from making communal appeals and statements that can create mutual hatred, and sub-para 4 of Para 1, which debars “corrupt practices” and offences under the election law.

The EC notice cited Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act, which recognises promoting enmity between classes in connecting with an election as an electoral offence, as well as Section 153A of the IPC (creating communal hatred).

The EC action follows a complaint filed by Shakeel Qureshi of Pune on April 16, in which he demanded that the recognition of Shiv Sena as a state party be cancelled.

According to a report sent to the EC by the Maharashtra chief electoral officer on April 20, Raut, in the April 12 editorial, had said: “The day Muslims’ voting rights are taken away, the mask of all secularists will fall off. That will reveal (Asaduddin) Owaisi’s sensitivity towards Muslims destitution and Muslims themselves should take lead in this. This decision should not be political but a national decision”.

The bench, however, refused to entertain the plea of Aam Adami Party Punjab who wanted to become a party in the matter.

The matter reached the high court through a letter written by some senior citizen seeking high court’s intervention in the issue.

The victim and her mother were allegedly pushed out a moving Orbit Aviation bus, which is owned by the family of state chief minister Prakash Singh Badal.

  • LS passes bill to amend Juvenile Act

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Lok Sabha on Thursday cleared an amendment bill to try a juvenile in the age group of 16 to 18 years under the laws meant for adult offenders in case of commission of heinous crimes like rape, murder and armed robbery.

The Juvenile Justice  Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha with voice vote even as the Congress and some other Opposition members voiced concern over the passage of the bill with provision to try juveniles on a par with adults in case of heinous crimes. The Bill got approval of the Lok Sabha with at least 42 official amendments moved by the government. All the amendments moved by the Opposition members including Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Revolutionary Socialist Party  leader N K Premchandran were defeated as they lacked numbers in support. Before the passage of the Bill, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi sought to allay the apprehensions of the Opposition members, particularly on the issue trying the juveniles in cases of heinous crimes, saying, she really “worked hard to be pro-child” in formulated the bill.

“In view of the increasing incidents of heinous crimes by juvenile on one hand and the voice of the child rights’ activists on the other, we have achieved a fine balance between the two aspects. The law cannot be lopsided and ignore the rights of the victims. The suffering of a victim of single heinous offence is equally worthy of action irrespective of the fact whether the offence was committed by a child or an adult,” she said.

Explaining how a juvenile charged with committing a heinous crime will be tried, she said if a child commits such a crime, he would not initially be sent to jail “at all”. Such juvenile in conflict with law will be sent to a “child-friendly institution and reformatory” while the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Board will take up the case for hearing.

The Juvenile Justice Board will decide whether the juvenile in conflict with law committed a heinous crime with a “child-like mind” or “an adult mind”.If it was found that such child committed a heinous crime with an adult mind, even then he or she would not be sent to a jail. “He goes to what is known as a Bostel, a specific area kept for children apart from the jail system,” she said, adding that such a child will be kept at the Bostel till he or she becomes 21 years old.

  • Salman Khan fan attempts suicide outside high court

MUMBAI (TIP): A fan of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan attempted suicide by consuming poison outide the Bombay High Court premises here on Friday when the actor’s bail plea in the 2002 hit-and-run case was being heard.

The victim, said to be in his 30s, was immediately whisked off by the police to a nearby government hospital or treatment and his condition is being monitored.

Thousands of Salman’s fans have assembled outside the actor’s suburban Bandra residence, and the high court in south Mumbai where Justice A. M. Thipsay is hearing the actor’s bail application against the five-year sentence awarded by Additional Sessions Judge D. W. Deshpande two days ago. Tight security has been at both venues in view of the huge fan crowds, celebrities and stars, media contingents and commoners gathered there. Salman was convicted in the September 2002 accident case in Bandra which had left one person dead and four other pavement dwellers injured.

Salman Khan found guilty of culpable homicide : Sentenced to five years : Mumbai High Court grants interim bail until May 8

MUMBAI (TIP): A Bollywood celebrity actor Salman Khan was sentenced to five years in jail by a Mumbai Court, today, May 6 in a 13 year old case of hit and run driving incident in Mumbai in which a homeless man was killed while four others were run over.

[quote_right] Khan found guilty, sentenced to jail for five years [/quote_right]

However, the actor will not be sent to jail.  Within hours of  sentencing, Salman’s lawyer Harish Salve obtained from Mumbai High Court, an interim bail order which gives him reprieve for two days, until May 8, when the Court will hear the actor’s petition for confirmation of bail. It is believed that given the many avenues available in the Indian legal system, Salman is unlikely to be spending time in jail.

Salman Khan was charged with culpable homicide. The court found the actor guilty of all counts of charges which included drunken driving, driving without valid license, running away from the scene of the incident and causing death of a man, besides causing injuries to four others.

Khan had said his driver was behind the wheel, but Judge D.W. Deshpande found him guilty on the charge of culpable homicide.

“You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol,” he told the actor as soon as the court proceedings began.

The case has gripped Bollywood and India for 13 years, since 2002.

Late on the night of 28 September 2002, Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser hit the American Express bakery in the Bandra area of Mumbai, authorities say.

The vehicle ran over five people sleeping on the street, killing 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan and seriously injuring three others. Another person received minor injuries.

The prosecution alleged that Khan had been driving the car while drunk. Giving evidence in March., Khan had denied he was drunk or that he was driving the vehicle.

    But many witnesses disagreed.

A constable attached to Khan’s security detail said in a statement to the police that the “drunk” actor had lost control of the car. The policeman died in 2007 of tuberculosis.

In April, Khan’s driver told the court that he had crashed the car after a tire burst but the court did not accept that version.

Indian American Team from Harvard develops novel gel for biomedical research

New York (TIP): Indian American researchers at the Harvard University have developed a biocompatible hydrogel that can speed up research and development of several promising applications in tissue engineering by using “Click Chemistry”.

Wyss Core Faculty member Neel Joshi, Ph.D., has developed a novel, truly biocompatible alginate hydrogel in collaboration with Mooney that can be synthesized using “click chemistry”, which is a methodology for the quick and practical synthesis of substances using just a few reliable, chemoselective reagents.

Indian American Joshi, who is also Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at SEAS, leads a team at the Wyss Institute developing new synthetic biomaterials that mimic naturally–occurring materials. Joshi and Mooney’s new “click alginate” has been reported in the May 1 issue of Biomaterials.

“It’s injectable, so it can be used to deliver cells or drugs to specific places in the body such as a location that has suffered a wound or has been invaded by a tumor,” said Joshi.

“And we are already using it for lots of different things in the laboratory due to how easy it is to synthesize.”  Joshi leads a team at the Wyss Institute developing new synthetic biomaterials that mimic naturally-occurring materials.  “It’s a great material for studying how cells sense the mechanical environments around them,” said Desai.

“Alginate hydrogels show promise for tissue engineering and drug delivery applications as they can be designed to dissolve away harmlessly in the body while releasing drugs, growth agents or living cells that can accelerate healing and regeneration,” said Wyss Institute Founding Director Donald Ingber, M.D., Ph.D

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University (http://wyss.harvard.edu) uses Nature’s design principles to develop bioinspired materials and devices that will transform medicine and create a more sustainable world.

  • Is Obama administration soft on Illegal Immigrants?

Is Obama administration soft on Illegal Immigrants?

While Republicans may fret and fume over Obama’s executive order on immigration which allows temporary legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, along with an indefinite reprieve from deportation, the fact remains the Obama administration has deported more undocumented immigrants than any other administration in history.

Facts seem to point out that Obama administration, while being liberal on the Immigration reforms, has however in the past 5 years, deported a record number of illegal immigrants.

As per a research done by Pew Research Centre, the Obama administration deported a record 438,421 unauthorized immigrants in fiscal year 2013, continuing a streak of stepped up enforcement that has resulted in more than 2 million deportations since Obama took office, released Department of Homeland Security data show.

The total number of deportations during Obama’s tenure passed 2 million in early 2014.

Another change that happened in 2013 is that a record 363,000 (83%) of deportations were carried out without appearing before a judge – either through an order issued by an enforcement agent (called expedited removal) or by using a previous order of deportation (called reinstatement of final orders).

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” – $187.6 million at theaters opening weekend – Movie review

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” debuted to a huge $187.6 million at theaters opening weekend, giving it the second largest weekend ever at the box office.

Despite the huge number, that’s far lower than analyst expectations, which projected the film to open at anywhere from $210 million – $230 million.

It’s also less than the first film, “The Avengers,” made back in 2012. That film surprised everyone when it debuted at a whopping $207.4 million to become the highest-grossing opening movie at the box office.

CAST: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen

    DIRECTION: Joss Whedon

    GENRE: Action

    DURATION: 2 hours 21 minutes

STORY: Following S.H.I.E.L.D’s dissolution in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as a preemptive measure to counter a possible alien attack that happened in the past (The Avengers 2012), Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) creates a global peace initiative, which is an artificial intelligence Ultron (voiced by James Spader) that goes rogue. It decides to kill the Avengers, citing world peace. The superheroes soon discover that Ultron intends to wipe out mankind itself. Can the team save the world from the mess of their own creation?

    [quote_center]REVIEW: [/quote_center]

Avengers: Age of Ultron is one heck of a superhero orgy as the mighty six – Iron Man (RDJ), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Capt America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) come face-to-face not only with the invincible Ultron, but various characters like Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). With these numerous characters put together, you can’t wait for the ‘party to begin’ and Whedon rewards your anticipation, right from the beginning and maintains it till the end. Fangasm guaranteed.

AOU is no less than a spectacle (the opening scene in particular with the heroes in slowmo – midair as they pounce on their enemies) and you get exactly what you pay for. The unparalleled action is of epic proportions and makes the mammoth destruction shown in Man of Steel and the previous Avengers film pale in comparison.

However, unlike the previous film which was more massy, this densely plotted sequel may appeal to the geeks more. For those not acquainted with the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), getting the threads together of this layered film could be a task. So, brush up on your Marvel jargon before watching this one.

Yoga on the Hill by Congressional Yogi Association! – With the support of Embassy of India

Valley Congressman Tim Ryan is on a quest to bring a little Zen to Capitol Hill.

Ryan and the Congressional Yogi Association hosted its first yoga event on May 1. It was part of the kickoff for Mental Health Awareness Month.

The efforts were led by former NFL linebacker Keith Mitchell. Members of congress, congressional staff and the public participated in Yoga on the Hill.

The event was part of an initiative promoting mental and physical wellness for veterans.

With the support of Embassy of India, Washington D.C., the newly founded Congressional Yogi Association organized the first-ever “Yoga on the Hill” on May 1st, 2015.

The event was organized to advocate better physical and mental health for US military veterans and worked as a curtain-raiser for the forthcoming First International Day of Yoga. Keith Mitchell, former NFL pro and a celebrity yogi, who suffered a paralyzing spinal injury and recovered through the practice of yoga, led the event. Prominent guests who participated were Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Brennan Mullaney (Team RWB- veterans’ welfare organization) and Tom Voss (Iraq War veteran) besides senior Embassy officials. The event was well received and around 60 Congressional officials participated in the yoga and meditation session.

The yoga event was focused on practice of yoga as an effective tool for the physiological and physical healing of war veterans who get affected by mental illnesses upon returning from combat. It is estimated that since the start of the war in Afghanistan in 2001, more than 100,000 combat veterans have sought help for mental illness and yoga is considered to be a form of health care support in such cases of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Yoga is becoming an increasingly more popular therapy for veterans dealing with stress.

Sikhs Explain Meaning of Turban to US Lawmakers

WASHINGTON:  Sikhs have to explain to American people what the turban means because that is the immediate source of their identification, according to the author of a new report on Sikhs in America presented to US lawmakers.

“Sikhs have to explain what it symbolizes and what values it represents,” said Geoff Garin, former political strategist for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton presenting the key findings of the report at a briefing arranged by the National Sikh Campaign (NSC).

“This will have a very powerful impact on the broader American public,” he said. “The study shows that when people see Sikhs on the streets anywhere, people are very confused about what Sikh faith is and that confusion leads to tragic consequences,” said Mr Garin.

“They also feel that they will not have very much in common with Sikhs.”

Mr Garin, whose current clients include the World Bank, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Harvard University, heads the Hart Research Associates, one of the leading survey firms in the US.

The firm conducted a six-month long nationwide polling and focus group study to understand how Sikhs are perceived in America and what strategies would be helpful to change perceptions.

The report lists specific messaging techniques which Sikhs could use in their media strategies resonating with American public.

Mr Garin said the survey showed that 6 out 10 Americans acknowledge that they know nothing at all about Sikhs and Sikhism.”

“Better educated Americans are likely to come in contact with Sikhs,” he said. “Younger Americans are likely to have some information about Sikhs.”

Judy Chu, founder and vice chair of the Congressional American Sikh Caucus, called it “a very significant report about the American perceptions of the Sikh community.”

John Garamendi, co-chair of the Sikh Caucus, said, “It’s extremely important that the people of the United States and beyond learn and understand the multiple cultures that we have in the United States.”

Dr Rajwant Singh, senior advisor to NSC, said the NSC plans to start a media ad campaign based specifically on this study and the various intricate details input collected from common Americans.

Indian American Woman Shot at, Critical After Attempted Robbery in US

NEW YORK:  An Indian-origin Gujarati woman working at a gas station in the US state of South Carolina has been shot in the face and left critically injured in an attempted armed robbery.

Mradulaben Patel was the co-owner and clerk of a store at a gas station in Powdersville. Police have asked for help in identifying the man who believed to have shot Ms Patel in the face Thursday night, Fox Carolina reported.

The report quoted Ms Patel’s friend Dilip Shah as saying that she had surgery yesterday and the doctors are monitoring her. He said he could not make out the reason for the shooting.
“She never had any problem with any customers,” Mr Shah said.

Deputies said the video shows a man walking into the store and they said he bought a pack of cigars. Authorities are reviewing the surveillance footage that showed the suspect, moments before, asking for cigars and then shooting Ms Patel without taking any money.

Investigators said they believe the man in the video shot Ms Patel during an attempted robbery. A man named Michael Wheat saw Ms Patel lying on the floor as he walked into the store late at night and called the police.

“I saw the clerk lying there on the floor, bleeding pretty bad,” said Wheat, adding that Ms Patel had blood all over her head and on the floor.

Wheat said he left the store and got in his truck from where he called 911.

He said he ran back into the store without knowing whether or not the shooter had already left the scene of the incident.

“She was kinda moaning as she was breathing,” said Wheat. Customwrs of the shop remembered Ms Patel as a friendly woman.

“She always asked how everybody was, their day was, (and) she asked how my daughter was every day that I came in here,” Shalynn Zarczynski, a frequent customer of Ms Patel’s, said.

  • 3 Indians Plead Guilty to Student Visa Fraud Charges in US

3 Indians Plead Guilty to Student Visa Fraud Charges in US

Three Indians have pleaded guilty to criminal charges of conspiring to commit student visa and financial aid fraud through a for-profit school they ran and agreed to forfeit over $ eight million to federal authorities.

Suresh Hiranandaney, 61, Lalit Chabria, 54, and Anita Chabira, 50, were arrested in May 2014, along with co-defendants Samir Hiranandaney and Seema Shah following a long-term investigation by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI).

Mr Hiranandaney and the Chabira duo pleaded guilty yesterday in the Manhattan federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit student visa fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit student financial aid fraud.

They also agreed to forfeit $ 7.4 million of proceeds of the student visa fraud conspiracy to the US government and another million dollars in restitution to the US Department of Education for losses from the student financial aid fraud conspiracy.
Each faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and will be sentenced in September this year.

Mr Hiranandaney, 28, and Ms Shah, 42, face pending criminal conspiracy charges.

Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said the three turned their for-profit schools into “instruments of fraud to exploit our nation’s foreign student visa and domestic student financial aid programs for their own personal financial gain. Education fraud remains a high-priority focus of ours and we will prosecute all those who make a self-serving sham out of education.”

According to the indictment filed in this case, the three were associated with the Micropower Career Institute, a for-profit school with five campuses in New York and New Jersey, as well as with the Institute for Health Education (IHE), a for-profit school located in New Jersey.

Mr Hiranandaney was MCI’s President; his brother-in-law Lalit Chabria was its Vice President and and his sister Anita MCI’s Vice President.

The three failed to report to immigration authorities that foreign citizens were not attending classes at their institutes, despite a federal law requirement that foreign citizens on student visas must pursue full courses of study at the approved schools.

If a student fails to attend classes as required, the school is required to inform immigration authorities so that the authorities may terminate that student’s visa.

The three fraudulently portrayed MCI and IHE to immigration authorities as legitimate institutes of higher learning where foreign students carried full course loads.

However, in reality, the majority of foreign students at MCI and IHE did not attend the required number of classes and the institutes continued to collect millions of dollars in tuition from the students with delinquent attendance.

When a campus of MCI came under regulatory scrutiny, the defendants and others transferred foreign students with delinquent attendance to affiliated schools (such as another MCI campus or IHE) that were not under scrutiny.

In another scheme, the three individuals falsified documents in student financial aid files at MCI in order to hide MCI’s failure to timely return financial aid funds received by it for domestic students who had dropped out.

In violation of federal laws, the MCI also failed to return to the Department of Education substantial sums of financial aid funds that the department had disbursed to the institute for domestic students who dropped out without an authorised leave of absence.

Specifically, the defendants and others falsified student files by altering documents in the files and in some cases created entirely fabricated documents to conceal MCI’s failure to return funds to the department while ensuring that its eligibility for future financial aid funds doesn’t get affected.

I have  almost been a regular at  the event of the events, the famous Noor Amrohvi poetical extravaganza, the annual mushaira. Noor is a consummate artist. A little crazy like most artists, he gives out his best whatever the circumstances, wherever it may be and whenever it may be. Mian, hum na sudharenge. Every time he organizes a mushaira, a lot many poets and a lot many guests come to hear the poets. When all is done and everybody is gone, Noor finds time to mull over kya khoya kya paaya and finds he is a little poorer, finance wise, but surely not in experience, pleasure and wisdom. He takes tremendous joy in getting financial beating, year after year.

I don’t know how long  he can afford to take that kind of joy. Chaliye, bahut rona dhona hua. Let us all salute Noor for whatever he has been doing for the community and for the fine  world  of poetry.

It is the fifth year of the Mushaira or Kavi Sammelan held under the auspices of Al Noor International. No doubt a memorable event. The hallmark of this year’s Kavi Sammelan was that reputed poets from India were invited. The local poets participated. It was very wise on the part of the management to separate this year’s Mushaira into two sessions. One was held on April 23 exclusively allocated to the local poets. A dinner was also hosted in honor of both the local and guest poets on this evening.

The second or the main part was held on April 24 which was in honor of the guest poets. It was held in a lavishly decorated spacious hall in Irving with a capacity of some 1000 guests to be accommodated. The hall was almost filled by the people who had come all the way in rainy evening to listen to the lyrics and poetic compositions of the famed poets from India.

    WONDERS OF PUNE

    Chaturshringi Temple (Above)
History: Built during the reign of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle, the Chaturshringi Temple derives its name from a mountain with four peaks (Chatur means four). The premises also houses temples dedicated to Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesh – which includes eight miniature idols of Ashtavinayaka. These small temples are located on the four separate hillocks. The legend associated with Chaturshringi Temple has that a rich and prosperous merchant, Durlabhsheth Pitambardas Mahajan, an ardent believer in Goddess Chaturshringi had this temple built on the direction of the Goddess herself. Being a devout follower he had visited her temples located at various places but as he grew older he could no longer travel. It was then that the Goddess Chaturshringi appeared in his dream one night and told him, that if he could not travel to her she would instead opt to come stay near him. She directed him to have a mountain situated in the North West side of Pune dug up. On digging at the designated place a natural statue or a swayambhu idol of the goddess was found and a temple was built there.

    ShaniwarwadaShaniwarwada

History: The foundation stone of one of the most historically significant places in Pune was laid in the year 1730 on a Saturday which gave it the name Shaniwarwada as Shaniwar is Saturday in Hindi and wada is a place you stay at. Today, little remains of the original structure that comprised of additions made over years to this seat of Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire. A great fire in 1827, that lasted for a full seven days, gutted everything except heavy granite ramparts, strong teak gateways and deep foundations. One can see five gates here, namely Dilli Darwaza, the main gate of the complex, the Mastani Darwaja, Khidki Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja, and Jambhul Darwaja.
Superstition attached: Many believe that the place is haunted because of the brutal assassination of the 13-year-old Peshwa heir. Many claim to still hear him crying for help on full moon nights.

To see: Light and sound show that depicts the story of the fort (7 pm daily).

    Aga Khan PalaceAga Khan Palace

History: Spread across an area of 19 acres, the Aga Khan Palace is a combination of Muslim and French architecture and has Italianate arches surrounded by well-laid out sprawling lawns and gardens. This landmark was built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III who got it constructed to help the poor people in the neighbouring areas of Pune who had been drastically hit by famine. It was here that eminent freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba, Mahadevbhai Desai and Sarojini Naidu were interned or held as prisoners during the freedom struggle. Various things used by Mahatama Gandhi such as his writing desk, his bed and Kasturba Gandhi’s sari, clothes and footwear have been preserved in this monument that has pictures of the Indian struggle for independence adorning its walls. This is also the place where Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadevbhai breathed their last. Highlight: Mahatma Gandhi was held prisoner here.

  • MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK SPACIOUS

    MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK SPACIOUS

Low furniture really opens up your home and makes it look spacious. People wanting a sleek, modern look for their homes opt for low furniture. Furniture closer to the ground ends up making the room it is placed in much larger than it is. From platform beds to low sofas, home decor just got lower. Many sofa sets available in the local markets are just a few inches off the ground, instead of the traditional height of more than a foot away.
Most Mumbaiites live in small flats, and that is the reason why even a little space available anywhere is what people crave for. Thanks to these short sofas the ceilings of your homes can appear to be much higher than it is. Low furniture can really lend a spacious look to your otherwise cramped dwelling.
Yash Tonkk’s duplex home in the western suburbs has a low sofa cum bed that makes his otherwise small living room appear larger. “I liked this low sofa cum bed. Its height and bright colour adds drama to my room, while the low height allows space,” says Gauri Tonkk.

Not just sofas there are beds available in the market, which accommodate the mattress, and thereby keep the level much lower than regular beds.
Low furniture can actually be housed in any room, and can be mixed with any style. “My wife, Mona and I got this low sofa especially designed for our home. I believe low furniture like our coffee table gives an amazing sense of space inside homes,” says

    Sudhanshu Pandey.
Low furniture can work in any room but when it come to just the seating areas, then mixing a low arrangement and a higher one at the same time can be quite disastrous. It looks more aesthetically appealing to have seating arrangements that are of similar heights, if not exactly the same. For example one should ideally avoid a low sofa right next to a very high bar stool!

  • MAKE SOY WAX CANDLES AT HOME

MAKE SOY WAX CANDLES AT HOME

You can get the required products from your local craft store, or you can order them from online retailers. If you are making candles for the first time, purchase a small amount of each item on the list. You can always order for more supplies if you like them.
Soy candles are said to last longer than wax candles and burn with a cleaner scent. Try your hand at making them.

    Things you’ll need

Mason jars or small earthen pots Ready-made wicks Soy wax for candles

    Method

To melt the wax, you need to create a double boiler. Place a glass or pyrex or a metal bowl on top of a pan of simmering water. Add the wax to the bowl, and let it begin to melt. While the wax melts, add the wax dye and aroma oil to the wax.(Note: wax is always darker before it cools, so you may need to add dye depending how you want your candle to turn out.) When adding fragrance, use the amount suggested on the bottle.
Using too much can cause your candle to burn improperly. Place the wick in the bottom of jar or a small earthen pot and pour the liquid wax. Allow it to set for several hours. If you are placing a lid on the container let the wax cool completely before covering the candle. In most cases the candle will need to set overnight before it can be lit. Before lighting trim the wick to ½ inch above the top of the candle.

    Get it right

If you have purchased a wick with a metal piece on the end you can secure it in place with a touch of superglue. Use the end of a pencil to get the metal piece centered in the bottom of the container. There are many types of fragrance but fragrance oils work the best with soy candles. These fragrances can be purchased in containers as small as 2 oz.

  • NEVER SKIP YOUR BREAKFAST

    NEVER SKIP YOUR BREAKFAST

In spite of health experts going blue in the face trying to get people to understand the importance of having breakfast, there are thousands who skip the first (and most crucial) meal of the day citing a motley of reasons.

Dietician Dr Sunita Dube says that having a hearty breakfast helps control excess hunger throughout the day. “Since we technically fast overnight while sleeping, forgoing breakfast adds to this fasting period and may disrupt blood sugar balance and insulin output.

Skipping breakfast also triggers bad eating habits during the day, as cravings ensue and quick-fix fast foods are often eaten. Having breakfast boosts metabolism and increases your energy levels throughout the day. When you miss it, your energy is reduced and physical activity levels decline,” reckons Dr Dube.

An ideal, healthy breakfast A healthy breakfast provides 25 per cent of the total energy and nutrients required by the body.

“Ideally, your first meal of the day should comprise a perfect combination of carbohydrates, protein and fibre. Make sure you include fruits, whole grains, berries and and good fats. Opt for light and soft idlis with sambhar, plain dosas with green chutney, milk with cornflakes or wheatflakes, vegetable poha or upma with a milkshake and sprouts. Also, include high fibre fruits like apples, papayas, muskmelons, oranges or watermelons,” says dietician and sports nutritionist, Deepshikha Agarwal.

What to avoid in the morning l Processed, deep fried or oily food, preserved meat, left over or junk food, cakes, pastries, and only juices are a no-no. l Avoid refined foods like white rice and white bread. Instead opt for whole wheat bread and cereals. Stay away from deep fried pakodas, puris, samosas, doughnuts, cookies, potato chips, candy bars and sodas. l Food items like vada pav, bhajias, wafers, pizzas and French fries are loaded with fat, salt and calories and have very little fibre -keep them at an arm’s length.

Disadvantages of skipping breakfast Experts say that skipping breakfast may put you on the fast track to weight gain, heart disease, osteoporosis, irritability or mood swings, menstrual irregularity, low energy levels, low memory and hormonal stress. “A study shows that people who skipped breakfast developed higher bad LDL cholesterol levels, and were less sensitive to insulin than people who ate breakfast every day,” says Dr Dube. And for those who skip breakfast in a bid to lose weight, you ought to read this. “People who miss breakfast tend to feel fatigued early on in the day and have low concentration levels, affecting their efficiency. Skipping breakfast also decreases metabolic rate making weight loss difficult. Research proves that people who skip breakfast tend to be heavier than people who eat a healthy breakfast. So, if you’re looking forward to losing weight, have a nutritious breakfast to get a healthy start to the day,” suggests Dr Agarwal.

Importance of a healthy breakfast in children and teens The amount of food that a child needs varies according to height, built, gender, and activity levels. “Most kids will usually eat the amount of food that’s right for them, however, it is up to the parents to ensure that their children have the right foods available to choose from. Eating a meal should be both a healthy and an enjoyable occasion – a fact that many parents overlook when planning a meal for growing children. Good eating habits start from home so be a good role model.

Make sure that no one in the house skips breakfast. A glass of milk along with a boiled egg, idli, dosa, a grilled vegetable sandwich, porridge, fresh fruit or a paneer sandwich is good for tweens and teens, says Clinical Nutritionist Dr Nupur Krishnan.

  • Rafael Nadal refuses to panic despite slump

Rafael Nadal refuses to panic despite slump

MADRID (TIP): Rafael Nadal insisted on Thursday that he will not panic over his worrying slump in form which has placed serious question marks over his dream of a 10th French Open title.

The 28-year-old Spaniard is down at four in the world rankings and has maximum points to defend at next week’s Madrid Masters where he is the double defending champion.

Nadal has just one title to his name this season — on clay in Buenos Aires — while his only victory over a top-10 player came against compatriot David Ferrer in Monte Carlo, where he went on to a tame semi-final loss to in-form Novak Djokovic.

But the 14-time major winner believes the clay courts of Madrid, where he was also champion in 2010, give him the perfect opportunity to jumpstart his bid for a 10th triumph at the French Open in June.

“I have the confidence that I am doing things well. When you do all you can, you can’t ask for any more,” Nadal was quoted by El Pais on Thursday.

“I need to have a balanced point of view that is not too negative or positive. If I maintain the same desire and work rate, I hope to once again have the same chance to compete for everything like I have in the past.”

Nadal’s most recent outing ended in a dispiriting third-round exit to Italy’s Fabio Fognini on clay in Barcelona, a venue where he had been champion eight times.

However, he believes Madrid can represent a turning point as he attempts to re-establish himself as a major force in the sport after an injury and illness-hit conclusion to 2014 which saw him miss three months of the season.

“Madrid has always brought me positive energy. Both the fans and the city have given me everything I could dream of. I know things have gone worse that I would have liked up until now, but that doesn’t negate my excitement to be here,” he added.

“I can only keep going. After so many ups and downs I am sure that the consistency I want to have will arrive. If you have the desire, and I have, you can turn the situation around.”
