Indian Americans Should Contribute to India’s Progress

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES:  Having excelled in America in their respective fields, there are tremendous opportunities for Indian-Americans to contribute to the development of India and its ties with the US, India’s envoy in Washington has said.

“The relationship between India and the US is very strong across a whole range of sectors in the economic field, in technology and in the defence where we are making tremendous progress,” Indian Ambassador to the US Arun K Singh told members of the Indian Diaspora at a reception in Washington.

“I believe, there is opportunity for all of you, who have excelled after coming to the United States to now also engage with the processes in India and make contribution not just to the US but also to the India-US relationship,” Mr Singh said at the reception hosted in his honour by the Indian American communities of the Greater Washington Area.

Addressing the gathering, Noble laureate Kailash Satyarthi hoped India-US relationship would strengthen further during Singh’s tenure as the Indian Ambassador in America.

Senior BJP leader Kiran Bedi, who is visiting the US to attend a family wedding, said about Mr Singh, that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sent his best diplomat to the US.

It is time to strengthen hands of the Prime Minister.

Some 400 eminent Indian-Americans from Greater Washington Area were present at the reception for Mr Singh.

Sikh Man Wins Right to Join US Army Without Removing Beard and Turban

NEW YORK:  A 20-year-old Sikh-American student has won a significant legal battle in the US with a court allowing him to enroll in an army programme without removing his articles of faith like the beard and turban.

US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson on Friday ruled in favour of Iknoor Singh, a student at Long Island-based Hofstra University, to enroll in US Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programme without shaving his beard, cutting his hair or removing his turban.

Mr Singh, born and raised in the Queens in New York, had previously been denied the right to enroll in his college’s ROTC programme on account of his religious articles of faith.

Mr Singh had alleged that the army’s refusal to accommodate his religious exercise violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and had brought a lawsuit against Secretary of the US Army John McHugh and Commander of the ROTC programme at Hofstra University Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Cederman, along with other senior military officials.

In the 49-page ruling issued in Washington, US District Court Judge Amy Jackson said, “Given the tens of thousands of exceptions the Army has already made to its grooming and uniform policies, its successful accommodation of observant Sikhs in the past, and the fact that, at this time, plaintiff is seeking only to enroll in the ROTC programme, the Army’s refusal to permit him to do so while adhering to his faith cannot survive the strict scrutiny that RFRA demands.”

The ruling further established that the Army’s denial of Mr Singh violated his rights under RFRA, which became a law in 1993 to protect religious practices and expression.

Mr Singh now has the right to enroll in the Army ROTC programme without shaving his beard, cutting his hair, or removing his turban.

“I’m very grateful that the freedom of religion our country fought so hard for will allow me to pursue my dream career – serving this country as a military intelligence officer – without violating my faith,” Mr Singh was quoted as saying in a statement by rights groups United Sikhs.

United Sikhs and the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of the national capital, brought the lawsuit in November 2014. Singh had first approached United Sikhs in the summer of 2013, seeking its legal assistance.

Mr Singh speaks four languages (English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu) and hopes to one day become a military intelligence officer. He will pursue finance and business analytics, United Sikhs said.

  • Kangana Ranaut – The Queen of Sass!

Kangana Ranaut – The Queen of Sass!

Kangana recently unveiled  the trailer of Katti Batti  along with her co-star Imran Khan and director Nikhil Advani. As the floor was opened to questions, a reporter asked Kangana a cliched question: “Who do you think is the Queen of Bollywood?”

While the reporter might have been expecting an equally cliched response to that, she was in for a surprise instead. Kangana did not answer that question instantly. It was almost as if Kangana heard it, tried to digest it’s lameness for a second, smiled to cover up and replied, “Is Bollywood a country? It is a very lame question.”

Isn’t that sassy now. Thats what makes her the queen we guess.

It’s Bulgaria Express time for Shahrukh Khan

Nothing can really stop Shah Rukh Khan. The actor who underwent a knee surgery on May 21, finished one schedule of director Rahul Dholakia’s Raees, and then yesterday, flew off to Bulgaria for two months to shoot for Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale.

Rohit has already reached the Balkan nation and SRK’s excitement was apparent as he tweeted, “Dilwale time…can’t wait to see the smiling faces of Rohits team. Waited a year for the fun to begin all over again….Bulgaria Express (sic).”

The dilwala will be joined by his dulhania, Kajol, and one of Bollywood’s most-loved couples will be filming a romantic song together in exotic Eastern Europe. Remo D’Souza, when prodded about the track which he will be choreographing, insisted that he had yet to hear it.

SRK was spotted at the airport, casually dressed in jeans, Tee, a leather jacket and dark glares. He still needed one of his crutches but his stride was jaunty and his wit razor-sharp as he made a laughing reference to his unfamiliar drooping moustache, “Battery died on trimmer so part of Raees still on face.”

He bumped into Hrithik and his sons, Hrehaan and Hridaan, who were on their way to South Africa for a holiday. Hrithik admitted that he was confused about how to introduce his Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham bhaiya to his boys. “Too cool for uncle, full name, first name – not respectful. Man of love – too long! Need help,” the 41-year-old-actor wrote on his Facebook page.

Well, We wish the  King of Romance good luck.

Angadi is a visually impaired student, Jadhao is a para-athelete and Malik is a educationist in rural areas. The Queen’s Young Leaders Award, launched by Prince William and Harry last year, has been organised by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust to recognise young people from across the 53 countries of the Commonwealth who are “taking the lead in transforming the lives of others and making a lasting difference in their communities”.

“This is a very special award in that it is the first of its kind to be named after the Queen. Her Majesty is extremely passionate about the Commonwealth and this award was set up to encourage and inspire the next generation of leaders in those countries,” Samantha Cohen, assistant private secretary to the Queen, said at a royal briefing in the South Drawing Room of Buckingham Palace.

A rigorous selection criteria was put in place by the Diamond Jubilee Trust and its partners – Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society – to pick out from hundreds of entries by 18-29 year olds from across the world.

“We wanted to reach far and wide and not just be limited to the urban areas. Social media played a very important role in getting the word out,” said Dr Astrid Bonfield, Chief Executive of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.

“We are looking for the unsung heroes who are already doing incredible things and can make some valuable connections to carry on doing amazing things,” said Bonfield.

  • Dallas Teacher Fired After Disturbingly Racist Post

Dallas Teacher Fired After Disturbingly Racist Post

A teacher has been “relieved of her teaching duties” after posting a racist Facebook rant in response to recent events at a McKinney, Texas, pool party, according to a statement from Frenship Independent School District.

Karen Fitzgibbons was a fourth-grade teacher a Bennett Elementary school of Frenship ISD in Wolfforth, Texas. On Tuesday, she posted an article to her page about Eric Casebolt, a police officer who recently resigned after being involved in a racially charged incident last Friday. Casebolt, who is white, was caught on tape throwing a black, bikini-clad teenage girl to the ground when responding to reports of a disturbance at a community pool. He also pointed his gun at other youths.

“This makes me ANGRY!” reads the post from Fitzgibbons, referring to Casebolt’s resignation, according to Texas outlet the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “This officer should not have to resign. I’m going to just go ahead and say it…the blacks are the ones causing the problems and this ‘racial tension.’ I guess that’s what happens when you flunk out of school and have no education.”

The post continues, “I’m sure their parents are just as guilty for not knowing what their kids were doing; or knew it and didn’t care. I’m almost to the point of wanting them all segregated on one side of town so they can hurt each other and leave the innocent people alone. Maybe the 50s and 60s were really on to something. Now, let the bashing of my true and honest opinion begin….GO! #imnotracist #imsickofthemcausingtrouble #itwasatagedcommunity.”

The post has since been deleted.

The statement from Frenship ISD says the district “is deeply disappointed in the thoughtlessness conveyed by this employee’s post. We find these statements to be extremely offensive, insensitive, and disrespectful to our Frenship community and citizens everywhere. These comments in no way represent the educational environment we have created for our students.”

“Employees are held to the same professional standards in their public use of electronic media as they are for any other public conduct. This recent conduct was unacceptable,” says the statement from the district.

Spokespeople from Frenship ISD did not respond to further requests for comment.

Fitzgibbons later issued an apology, according to local outlet KCBD-TV.

“First, to anyone, of any race, that I have offended, I sincerely apologize. That was not my intent. I let my emotions get the best of me, and instead of taking a deep breath, vented in an inappropriate way. I am truly sorry,” it says in part.

The apology goes on to say that Fitzgibbons teaches her students to treat others with dignity, and she is now “ashamed” of her previous Facebook post.

$20k Reward Offered in ‘Senseless’ Killing of Quiznos Owner

A $20,000 reward was offered Wednesday for information leading to the arrest of the gunman who shot and killed the owner of a Quiznos sandwich shop during a robbery in San Dimas, sheriff’s officials said.

Pravin Patel, 62, was shot in the chest after a robbery at a Quiznos in the 1000 block of West Arrow Highway (map) around 3:25 p.m. on June 2, said Sgt. Rebecca Rodriguez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“The employee gave over the money and he followed the suspect outside of the location. A struggle ensued in front of the store and the suspect shot the victim,” Rodriguez said.

A woman who ran a business next door rushed to Patel’s aid and called 911.

“It’s really heartbreaking,” Kelly Strong said last week. “It was totally senseless.”

Patel’s niece said the shooting did not need to happen.

“Whoever did this took away a life that never should have been taken away this early, and should never have been taken away in this manner,” said Risha Patel, also speaking last week.

Patel and his wife were the owners of the restaurant, a family spokesman confirmed Wednesday, when a sketch of the shooter was released at an afternoon news conference

  • RBI SEEKS MORE FUNDS FOR RECAPITALIZATION OF BANKS

RBI SEEKS MORE FUNDS FOR RECAPITALIZATION OF BANKS

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Reserve Bank on June 11 said Rs 7,940 crore earmarked for recapitalization of PSU banks in the current fiscal is not adequate and has asked finance ministry to increase the quantum of assistance in view of mounting bad loans and to support growth.

“We have been suggesting to the finance ministry from time to time that the public sector banks need more capital than what budget has indicated. So, we have been raising this issue at various discussions and forums and it was also formally written by Reserve Bank of India,” RBI deputy governor SS Mundra said here.

“Budgeted amount which is over Rs 7,000 crore will not be adequate from the both perspective for enabling the bank for clean up of the books which is required and growth when it comes back, to support it,” he said.

Last fiscal, government infused Rs 6,990 crore in 9 public sector banks based on their performance.

Asked about additional quantum of infusion needed beyond the budget amount, Mundra said there is no single way of calculation on the requirement and it is based on various factors.

“We have done some broad calculation for entire part of Basel-III committee implementation… What we are trying to indicate is that at this point of time because of certain stress on the book some capital would be consumed for cleaning of the books,” he said.

That cleaning is vital because when growth returns capital would be needed to support it, he said, adding that growth can be well supported with cleaner balance sheet rather than with a stress on books.

“That is the whole idea of increased capital. It can partly help to clean the balance sheet. Make the balance sheet ready to support when growth returns, additional capital will support the growth also,” he said.

Talking about setting up of a trading platform for receivables, Mundra said: “We have already invited applications and quite a few applications have been received by RBI. They are currently under scrutiny.”

Receivables are basically bills or monetary obligations owed to a company by its customers.

If such trading platform is set up, then it would provide cash flow to MSME against such receivables. It will help them overcome cash crunch.

“I would urge and hope that somehow if legislative process is brought in which makes mandatory for large corporates, public sector units and the government departments to compulsorily register on (receivables) trading platform so that when the small and medium units has done any supply to any of these institutions then the payment of receivables on due date becomes legal obligation,” he said. “I believe recovery of dues is a major challenge for MSME so if it can become a legislative process or part of statute it will go a long way in supporting the sector,” he said.

  • 6 private Harper Lee letters could fetch $250,000 at auction

6 private Harper Lee letters could fetch $250,000 at auction

NEW YORK (TIP): Six letters by “To Kill a Mockingbird” author Harper Lee to one of her closest friends could fetch as much as $250,000 at auction.

Four of the letters date from before “Mockingbird” while Lee was caring for her ailing father, Amasa Coleman Lee, the model for her protagonist Atticus Finch.

The signed and typed letters were written to Lee’s friend, New York architect Harold Caufield, between 1956 and 1961, according to Christie’s, which is selling them on Friday.

In one, she writes about her “stunned” reaction to the huge success of the book, published in 1960 and made into a movie starring Gregory Peck two years later.

“We were surprised, stunned & dazed by the Princeton review,” she wrote. “The procurator of Judea is breathing heavily down my neck – all that lovely, lovely money is going straight to the Bureau of Internal Revenue tomorrow.”

In another letter she tells Caufield: “Daddy is sitting beside me at the kitchen table. … I found myself staring at his handsome old face, and a sudden wave of panic flashed through me, which I think was an echo of the fear and desolation that filled me when he was nearly dead. It has been years since I have lived with him on a day-to-day basis.”

The sale comes as Lee’s second book, “Go Set a Watchman,” is set to be released in July. It was written before the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Mockingbird” but takes place 20 years later. Lee’s agreement to release the book stunned the literary world. “Watchman” has been ranked No. 1 in new releases of classic literature and fiction on Amazon.com for weeks.

“She’s arguably one of the most important American novelists of the post-war period who has not published a great deal,” said Tom Lecky, Christie’s head of books and manuscripts. “She’s remained a private figure so the appearance of an archive like this is a very important moment in the marketplace. Only three other letters of hers have come up at auction within the last 35 years.”

Christie’s said the seller, who wished to remain anonymous, acquired the letters on the open market. The auctioneer intentionally has blurred the contents in its catalog and online to protect the author’s privacy.

The 89-year-old Lee, who is in declining health and lives in an assisted-living home in Monroeville, Alabama, could not be reached for comment about the sale. Her attorney, Tonja Brooks Carter, did not return an email and phone request for comment.

In a 1961 letter Lee wrote that Esquire magazine turned down her “pastiche” about “some white people who were segregationists & at the same time loathed & hated the KKK This is an axiomatic impossibility, according to Esquire!”

The letters, totaling eight pages, are signed as Nelle, New Hampshire, or with comic pseudonyms including “The prisoner of Zenda,” a reference to an 1894 novel about a king who is drugged and kidnapped on the eve of his coronation.

The letters present “an interesting bracket of before and after of a monumental moment in American letters where you have the time leading up to while she’s writing her book and then you get a glimpse into her reaction to the reaction,” said Lecky. “You see how the book was received and how she received those reviews.

MINEOLA, NY (TIP): A deputy with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office was fired Tuesday, June 9 night and arrested on drug trafficking charges, Sheriff Bill Leeper said.

Raulerson is accused of selling his own prescription medication to another man for re-sale. The deputy denies the allegations, saying there is no physical evidence to support the charges according to sources

Reports said that a warrant was issued for Raulerson’s arrest after an internal investigation which led to a sworn statement from the man accused of buying the drugs from Raulerson. He said the Sheriff’s Office learned Raulerson was selling prescription medication and there was enough evidence to fire the deputy although the investigation is ongoing.

Jail records indicate Raulerson was released from jail Tuesday night.

Pakistan shuts down ‘Save the Children’ offices

ISLAMABAD (TIP): Pakistan ordered international children’s aid agency ‘Save the Children’ to shut down its operations in the country as authorities today said no NGOs “working against the country” will be allowed to continue.

The charity’s country office here was sealed June 12 after government officials accompanied by police placed a lock on its gate and and asked employees to leave.

The non-governmental organizations’ foreign staff has been directed to leave Pakistan within 15 days, police said.

A statement issued by the Interior Ministry said the international NGO was involved in “anti-Pakistan activities”, Geo News reported.

Interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said NGOs working against the country’s national interest will not be allowed to continue its work in Pakistan.

“We don’t want to put ban on any NGO but we want to compel them to work under their charter,” Khan was quoted as saying by the Dawn.

The interior minister added that they had been receiving intelligence reports for many years but no action was being taken. NGOs, whose numbers run into hundreds, have been operating without any code of conduct, law and agenda, he said.

He also appealed to all international NGOs and governments to respect the laws of Pakistan, adding that the government will not bear any kind of foreign pressure regarding the working criteria of the NGOs.

Meanwhile in a statement today, ‘Save the Children’ objected to the government’s action. “Save the Children was not served any notice to this effect.

We strongly object to this action and are raising our serious concerns at the highest levels,” it said.

The NGO added that it has been operating in Pakistan for over 35 years and that currently it had 1,200 employees in the country but none of them a foreign national.

Pakistan has previously linked the charity to the fake vaccination programme used by the CIA to track down al-Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden.

The NGOs activities had been under strict scrutiny for the past six months.

  • Photojournalist arrested over blogger’s murder in Bangladesh

DHAKA (TIP): A Bangladeshi photojournalist has been arrested over his alleged role in the murder of an “atheist” blogger who was hacked to death last month by masked machete-wielding assailants, police said on June 10.

“A team of CID (criminal investigation department) arrested him as a suspect,” M Rokonuddin, additional police commissioner of northeastern Sylhet, where Ananta Bijoy Das was hacked to death, told PTI.

He said photographer Idris Ali, who works for a national and a Sylhet daily, was remanded into police custody for seven days for interrogation on orders of a court there. Later, he was brought to the CID headquarters here under security.

CID’s senior superintendent Abdullah Hell Baki said here that Ali was under surveillance ahead of his arrest, but refused to elaborate, saying: “I can’t tell you much about his links until we interrogate him”.

We are awaiting the suspect to reach here later this evening,” he said.

33-year old Das, a banker by profession, was the latest of three secular bloggers hacked to death this year by suspected Islamists after machete-wielding militants attacked him last month.

In a related development, Bangladesh overnight banned Islamist outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), suspecting its involvement in murders of several secular bloggers in recent months and over alleged links to al-Qaida.

The ban came as 10 prominent Bangladeshis, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advisor HT Imam, vice-chancellor of premier Dhaka University professor Arefin Siddique and popular writer and physicist professor Zafar Iqbal earlier this week received death threats in letters.

  • Nepal to ink transport deal with India, Bangladesh, Bhutan

KATHMANDU (TIP): Nepal will sign the Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) Motor Vehicles Agreement in Thimphu on Monday to facilitate transportation of both people and goods among the four Saarc member countries. Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management Bimalendra Nidhi is leaving for the Bhutanese capital tomorrow to sign the agreement on behalf of the Nepal government.

“With endorsement from the cabinet, I am visiting Thimphu to sign the motor vehicles agreement, which is part of the Saarc Motor Vehicles Agreement,” Nidhi told PTI. “Once the BBIN is signed, it would pave way for signing the Saarc Motor Vehicle Agreement,” he pointed out. The BBIN agreement is expected to help revive the stalled South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation motor vehicles agreement, which was approved during the Saarc Summit here in November, 2014.

“This is a sub-regional motor vehicle agreement which is not parallel to the Saarc motor vehicle agreement,” he said. The BBIN will facilitate transportation of both people and goods among the four Saarc member countries.

The signing of the BBIN would promote safe, economical, efficient and environmentally sound road transport in the region and would further help each country in creating an institutional mechanism for regional integration. Nidhi said Nepal is still negotiating for the Saarc motor vehicles agreement as early as possible but a meeting could not be convened due to the April 25 quake.

  • Afghanistan gets ‘mini-Pentagon’ as troops struggle

KABUL (TIP): They call it the “mini-Pentagon” — a white marble building in the heart of Afghanistan’s capital built with US funds to serve as the headquarters of a modern military more than a decade in the making.

But the newly constructed building is a world apart from the front-lines of Afghanistan’s unfinished war, where soldiers huddled at exposed checkpoints increasingly rely on police and local militias, and where logistical bottlenecks almost led to the loss of a key northern city to insurgents who swept across the northern plain in April.

US officials told The Associated Press during an exclusive tour of the building that the new $160 million defense ministry will help the military streamline its operations and more effectively counter the Taliban now that the US and Nato combat mission has officially ended.

The five-story building with a 34-meter (110-foot) dome will accommodate 2,500 employees, with barracks for officers and enlisted men, an ancillary garrison as well as a wastewater treatment facility and a power plant. Three dining halls can seat a total of 1,000 people, and an auditorium more than 900. The sprawling compound also includes gyms, clinics and military courtrooms.

The design for the 38,500 sq. meter (414,500 sq. foot) structure was chosen from entries in a nationwide competition open to architecture students. The resulting building, a combination of the top two designs, has taken four years to complete. Some 70 tons of furniture, along with fixtures and computer equipment, have added another$33.3 million to the US taxpayer-funded bill, and information technology alone will add another $12 million.

“We now have the ability to be able to see the progress and the potential of everything that the security forces in Afghanistan can do,” said US Maj Gen Todd Semonite, the American commander overseeing the transition, calling it “a new beginning for the Ministry of Defense.”

There’s at least one key element missing, a defense minister. President Ashraf Ghani has yet to fill the post in the nine months since assuming office because of infighting with chief executive Abdullah Abdullah, the man he defeated in a hotly disputed election. It’s hoped that his fourth nominee, Masoom Stanekzai, will be confirmed later this month, in time for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

  • Nawaz Sharif slams remarks by Indian leaders as ‘imprudent’

ISLAMABAD (TIP): Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on June 12 attacked the “irresponsible and imprudent” statements from the Indian political leadership and vowed to protect his country’s “vital interests at all costs”.

Addressing a conference of Pakistan’s envoys here, he said such statements vitiate the atmosphere and take the two countries away from goals of regional peace and stability.

“The entire nation is dismayed by the recent irresponsible and I must say imprudent statements from the Indian political leadership. This vitiates the atmosphere and takes us further away from our goal of regional peace and stability. We will protect our vital interests at all costs,” he said.

This message, Sharif said, must be heard loud and clear. “At the same time we will not abandon our high moral ground because of provocations. We will continue our quest for a peaceful neighbourhood,” he said.

Sharif said externally-sponsored terrorism and violent extremism were grave threats to a secure and prosperous Pakistan.

He said the issue of Jammu & Kashmir cannot be relegated to the back-burner of history.

The Prime Minister pointed out that only on last Tuesday during his meeting with the UN secretary general in Dushanbe, he urged him to play a proactive role in promoting peace in the region.

Sharif said he also reminded him that it was incumbent on the UN security council to ensure early implementation of its resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir.

  • California orders large water cuts for farmers

California orders large water cuts for farmers

SACRAMENTO (TIP): Drought-stricken California has ordered the largest cuts on record to farmers holding some of the state’s strongest water rights.

State water officials yesterday told more than a hundred senior rights holders in California’s Sacramento, San Joaquin and delta watersheds to stop pumping from those waterways.

The move by the State Water Resources Control Board marked the first time that the state has forced large numbers of holders of senior-water rights to curtail use. Those rights holders include water districts that serve thousands of farmers and others.

The move shows California is sparing fewer and fewer users in the push to cut back on water using during the state’s four-year drought.

California orders large water cuts image“We are now at the point where demand in our system is outstripping supply for even the most senior water rights holders,” said Caren Trgovcich, chief deputy director of the water board.

The order applies to farmers and others whose rights to water were staked more than a century ago. Many farmers holding those senior-water rights contend the state has no authority to order cuts.

The reductions are enforced largely on an honour system because there are few meters and sensors in place to monitor consumption.

California already has ordered cuts in water use by cities and towns and by many other farmers.

The move yesterday marked the first significant mandatory cuts because of drought for senior water rights holders since the last major drought in the late 1970s.

One group of farmers with prized claims have made a deal with the state to voluntarily cut water use by 25 per cent to be spared deep mandatory cuts in the future.

The San Joaquin River watershed runs from the Sierra Nevada to San Francisco Bay and is a key water source for farms and communities.
