Indian American man pleads guilty to wire fraud, identity theft

An Indian American man, Rohit Jawa, 25, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, Rohit Jawa, 25, has pleaded guilty to eight counts of wire fraud, and one count of stealing a special agent’s identity which he then used to fraudulently gain access to privileged law enforcement databases – from which he stole the personal identifying information of multiple victims.

According to court documents, Jawa’s mischief began in January 2013. He controlled “a set of at least 19 eBay and 18 PayPal accounts … engaged in a scheme to defraud eBay buyers and eBay’s third-party parcel insurance company”.

Investigating these fraudulent accounts, agents from the United States Postal Service’s Office of the Inspector General (USPS OIG) obtained search warrants to dig into the email addresses. These were hosted by 1&1 Mail and Media, a provider which lets users register multiple addresses under a single account.

The agents found “numerous conversations where buyers reported to the seller that they had not received a purchased item, despite Postal Service tracking history showing the item had been delivered.”

In the case of insured parcels, the seller would file a claim with eBay’s third-party insurance company, using the tracking history as evidence the Postal Service had lost the parcel – or it had been stolen. For uninsured parcels, the seller would use the tracking history to prove to eBay he had shipped the purchased item to the buyer, causing eBay to decide disputes in his favour.

Other messages in those accounts contained Postal Service tracking numbers for parcels the seller had sent, supposedly using eBay-generated Postal Service shipping labels, but which the buyer claimed to have never received despite Postal Service tracking history showing the parcel had been delivered.

Agents found irregularities comparing the destination addresses eBay provided to the Postal Service, with the addresses on the labels as seen by the Postal Service’s mail processing equipment.

“A seller can then use this legitimate-looking tracking history to convince eBay, a buyer, or an insurance company that he sent the purchased item to the buyer, when he actually mailed an empty box to a random address in the same ZIP code to generate tracking history,” the agents said.

Special Agent John Watson stated in his affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, that in his “training and experience, this kind of manipulation of a shipping label is a strong indication of fraud.”

    Identity theft
A victim of this fraud scheme complained to the Postal Service about his missing parcel. His complaint eventually reached a USPS OIG special agent, who began looking into it as an incident of mail theft by a Postal Service employee.

Corresponding with the seller via one of the 1&1 email addresses, the agent requested additional information about the missing parcel – doing so quite explicitly as a special agent, not suspecting any criminality on the part of the seller.

Jawa, the seller, then requested the agent provide him with a copy of his credentials as verification of his identity, which the OIG agent did.

Two days later after receiving this information, the FBI received a request using the special agent’s identity with a secondary email address registered to 1&1.

This was for an account with Law Enforcement Online, a web portal which provides access to criminal intelligence and other highly privileged information for law enforcement officials. A day later, someone purporting to be the special agent phoned FBI tech support and successfully obtained a temporary username and password for that account.

Using the @leo.gov email which came with the LEO account, Jawa then corresponded with several police forces requesting accounts be made for him on their internal services. Although he was only successful in one instance, he then exploited this access to obtain sensitive personal information on at least nine people, including the special agent.

These nine subsequently had fraudulent eBay, PayPal, and other financial accounts opened using their identities.

Jawa, who is an Indian national, was indicted by a federal grand jury on 13 August 2015. He faces a mandatory minimum of two years in prison and a maximum penalty of 20 years. He will be sentenced on 12 February 2016.

  • Hindus worldwide laud Singapore for allowing Thaipusam live music

Hindus worldwide laud Singapore for allowing Thaipusam live music

NEVADA (TIP): Worldwide Hindus have commended Singapore government for reportedly allowing live music at colorful Thaipusam Hindu street procession in January, for the first time in over four decades.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) called it a step in the positive direction.

The instruments reportedly allowed on this about three kilometers route; which begins at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple and ends at the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on January 24; are the nadhaswaram clarinet, a barrel-shaped drum called the tavil, and the urumi melam or Indian drum. Ban has been reportedly in place since 1973.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that traditions of music and dance were important in Hinduism and these go back in history. Elements of musical theory were first found in ancient Sama-Veda, and by tradition, the dance was invented by Lord Shiva who first danced the cosmic tandava.

Rajan Zed further said that Hindu community had made lot of contributions to the nation and society in Singapore and it was a nice gesture on the part of the government to allow live music in their religious procession. Zed also commended Singapore Hindu Endowments Board for their efforts in this regard.

  • Pakistan trained students to use social media for JuD, LeT Terror propaganda

Pakistan trained students to use social media for JuD, LeT Terror propaganda

WASHINGTON: Students of an elite military-run university in Pakistan have been trained to use social media sites in support of banned terrorist groups like LeT and JuD which have been protected and supported by the ISI, according to US national security sources.

Less than a week after the US visit of Pakistan’s army chief General Raheel Sharif who met top officials of the Obama administration including Vice President Joe Biden, sources in the national security establishment here said they have fresh evidence of the ISI training people to engage in a social media war on behalf of these banned terror groups on Facebook and Twitter.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the sources shared a recently prepared document which provides such a link between the Pakistani establishment and those indulging in propaganda on social media for terror organisations like Lashkar-e-Tayaba (LeT) and its wing Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD).

The document was prepared based on publicly available sources on the Internet.

For instance, Malik Salman Javed, director of the recently formed Stratagem magazine is a graduate of the National Defence University’s (NDU) national security workshop.

Javed, who on his website writes that he is a NDU-Pakistan alumni, has been posting pro-JuD content on Twitter for the past several years.

“In addition to PKKH (Pakistan Ka Khuda Hafiz), Fortress and NDU, there is strong circumstantial evidence that at least some Stratagem members have a strong affinity for if not direct membership in Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD),” according to the US dossier, a part of which was seen by PTI.

Notably PKKH, a strategic policy institute, has a history of collaboration with JuD since at least 2010 when PKKH launched “Mere Log” – a disaster relief operation to provide food and shelter to victims of that year’s deadly floods.

“Mere Log” was conducted under the supervision of JuD and the Pakistan Army, the brief report said.

In the first issue of Stratagem magazine, author M Zainulbedin Ameer used JuD’s Maulana Hamza as an example of people working to protect Islam.

The dossier said that Ameer’s Facebook page also regularly features JuD propaganda that suggests he has a close affinity if not membership of the group.

Now in existence for more than six months, Stratagem contents confirm to a right-wing Pakistani national ideology based in certain fundamental premises that “democracy is a failure” in Pakistan, India is “determined” to destroy Pakistan, its military is both faultless and invincible and that Pakistan and Islam are under attack from internal as well as external forces, the dossier said.

  • Donald Trump wants Terrorists’ Families to be Targeted

Donald Trump wants Terrorists’ Families to be Targeted

WASHINGTON (TIP): Donald J. Trump said Wednesday, December 2, that in the battle against the Islamic State, the families of terrorists should be targets, saying they were using their relatives “as shields.”

“We’re fighting a very politically correct war,” Mr. Trump said, adding, “The other thing with the terrorists, you have to take out their families.”

“They say they don’t care about their lives,” he added. “You have to take out their families.”

“One of the problems that we have and one of the reasons we’re so ineffective is they’re trying to, they’re using them as shields,” the GOP front-runner told Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” program. He repeated the comments on other morning shows.

“It’s a horrible thing. They’re using them as shields. But we’re fighting a very politically correct war.”

But with the terrorists, said Trump, “you have to take out their families. They care about their lives, don’t kid yourself, but they say they don’t care about their lives. You have to take out their families.”

The comments came while Trump was speaking about how if president, he would fight ISIS and “bomb the hell out of them.”

“I would knock the hell out of ISIS,” said Trump. “I would hit them. I would hit them . . . so hard, like they’ve never been hit before.”

And when it comes to civilian casualties, Trump said he’d do his “best, absolute best,” but as the families are being used as shields, they would have to be hit too.

Trump said his policy has always been the same when it comes to fighting ISIS, but pointed out the confusion when it comes to fighting the terrorists.

“We’re fighting ISIS and Assad (Syrian President) is fighting ISIS,” said Trump. “And Assad, let’s assume he’s a bad guy, because he is, but we’re backing rebels to fight Assad. Again, ISIS is fighting Assad. You got to pick who you’re fighting. I mean you can’t fight everybody. We’re going to be fighting everybody.”

And with Turkey involved “and Turkey sort of likes ISIS more than they like [us],” he continued.

“Russia does not like ISIS, and people are starting to find out. I mean in all fairness, [they] lost an airplane, blown out of the air. So Russia is not a fan of ISIS. Russia is bombing the hell out of them, starting to bomb them. I say ISIS is our number one threat. We can’t be fighting everybody at the same time. ISIS is our number one threat.”

Meanwhile, Trump said, President Barack Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing when it comes to ISIS.

“Every time he sends troops over, even if it’s a small number, like he’s sending another small number, he announced 50, last week, he has a press conference to inform everybody he’s sending troops and it’s like they have a target on their back,” said Trump.

“If you do your job, do your job. Don’t talk about it…any good general, somebody that knows what he’s doing they don’t talk about where they’re sending their troops, how they’re sending their troops, these troops are meant to do this and not go into homes and take out people. You don’t do that. You send the troops quietly.”

This means the troops “have targets on their heads,” and meanwhile, all Obama “is worried about is climate change. He thinks climate change is something that’s going to go kill us. And it’s not going to kill us at all. It’s not going to kill us.”

Mr. Trump, who often calls himself the “most militaristic person there is,” has risen in polls recently amid fears of terrorism in the United States after the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris, which killed 130 people.

  • Indian American Group Express Support to Journalist VP Rajeena

Indian American Group Express Support to Journalist VP Rajeena

WASHINGTON: An Indian-American Muslim group has called for an internal but independent and transparent assessment by community leaders in India into claims by woman journalist VP Rajeena who recently described instances of alleged sexual abuse of children in a Madrasa.

Ms Rajeena, who works for a Malayalam newspaper, posted on Facebook about her childhood experiences at a Madrasa, where an “ustad” (teacher) allegedly engaged in alleged sexual exploitation of children.

“We support Rajeena’s right not only to speak up about past abuse but also warn the community about the potential for such abuse, that would victimize innocent children,” Umar Malick, president of Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC).

In a statement, IAMC called for an internal but independent and transparent assessment by credible community leaders, leading up to an investigation by law enforcement in all instances where there are grounds to believe the law has been violated.

“Unfortunately, instead of taking the journalist’s revelations with the seriousness they deserve, many Muslims questioned her motives or launched a harassment campaign online including threats and hateful remarks,” IAMC said.

  • US ‘terror’ arrests at the highest level since 9/11

US ‘terror’ arrests at the highest level since 9/11

WASHINGTON (TIP): As of right now, US authorities have arrested 56 people in 2015 on charges related to their attempts to join or aid the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, according to a new report from George Washington University.

It’s the most terrorism-related arrests in a single year since the 9/11 attacks on the US.

Why the high number? – “I think US prosecutors have got-ten a bit creative on their charges in some cases,” said Seamus Hughes, a former counterterrorism official with the US government and co-author of the report.

“I think there’s a realization and a concern on law enforce-ment’s part to rightly try to prevent the next attack.”

But ISIL’s online efforts have also been a big contributor to the uptick in arrests.

“I think their use of social media has attracted more peo-ple than it has in the past,” said Hughes.

Indeed, the majority of the people charged with aiding ISIL were between the ages of 18-26 years old, according to the report, a key demographic when it comes to social media. ISIL is particularly active on Twitter, the report found.

According to Ambassador Alberto Fernandez, a former state department official who specializes in ISIL’s social media presence, the group produced 1,800 videos in the past year, 14,523 graphics, worked in nine languages and created 50 songs.

Much of the message to Westerners is positive and less religious than its Arabic output. “The material in English is more superficial,” said Fernandez. “It’s fervent, incessant, but shallow.”

The report also found that 86 percent of the Americans who join ISIL are male and 40 percent of them are converts to the Muslim faith. Their motives vary.

Roughly half of those charged with an offence attempted to travel abroad or successfully left the US before they were caught, according to the report.

Although there were ISIL-related arrests in 21 states, New York and Minnesota had the highest numbers.

  • France likely to close more than 150 mosques

France likely to close more than 150 mosques

PARIS (TIP): Leading Imam Hassan El Alaoui says “The whole issue is not about Muslims, but about terrorists. It’s an issue of security for everyone.”

France is likely to close up to 160 mosques in the coming months as part of a nationwide police operation under the state of emergency which allows places of worship that promote radical views to be shut down, one of the country’s chief imams has said.

In another news, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told journalists on Wednesday, December 2, that three mosques had been closed over the past two weeks during the state of emergency – marking the first time France had taken such action against places of worship. On Wednesday, police shut down a suspected radical mosque east of Paris and arrested the owner of a revolver found in related raids as part of the crackdown, Cazeneuve said. Security officers also found “jihadist” documents in the raids at the mosque and related premises in Lagny-sur-Marne.

The assets of Imam Mohamed Hammoumi, who ran the mosque and the cultural associations until he left to live in Egypt in 2014, were frozen in April, AFP reported. The other two mosques closed last week were in Gennevilliers, northwest of Paris, and in the southeastern city of Lyon, Cazeneuve added. France has so far raided 2,235 homes and buildings, taken 232 people into custody and confiscated 334 weapons, 34 of them war grade, the interior minister said.

Following this, Hassan El Alaoui, who is in charge of nominating regional and local Muslim imams and mediating between the imams and prison officials, told Al Jazeera that more were set to be shut. “According to official figures and our discussions with the interior ministry, between 100 and 160 more mosques will be closed because they are run illegally without proper licenses, they preach hatred, or use takfiri speech,” he said.

Takfiris are classified as Muslims who accuse others of the same faith of apostasy, an act which has become a sectarian slur. “This kind of speech shouldn’t even be allowed in Islamic countries, let alone secure countries like France,” El Alaoui, who became the first Muslim prison chaplain-general in 2005, said.

The recent mosque closures, he added, were made under “a legal act that the authorities have” and must have happened because “of some illegal things that they found”.

The imam also rejected those suspected of carrying out the suicide bomb and gun attacks, which left 130 people dead, as “terrorists”. Those terrorists are a bunch of thieves and drug dealers that wore religious clothing,” he said. “The whole issue is not about Muslims, but about terrorists. It’s an issue of security for everyone.”

  • After a long wait, 1971 victims’ kin find closure

DHAKA (TIP): A framed black and white photograph of bodies lying in what looks like a swamp hangs in the living room of Shyamali Nasreen Choudhury’s single-storied house at Dhaka’s upscale Dhanmondi. It has been 44 years since that photograph was taken in December 1971. But every time Shyamali looks at it, her eyes grow moist and her voice breaks. One of the bodies is that of her husband, Abdul Alim Choudhury, a prominent ophthalmologist. Notorious Al-Badr militia had picked up the doctor on December 15, 1971, a day before Pakistani forces surrendered.

The abduction was part of a systematic attempt to cripple the new nation (Bangladesh) even in its birth by killing Bengali intellectuals — lawyers, doctors, engineers, professors etc. The doctor was one of the estimated 200 intellectuals of Dhaka picked up on December 14 and 15 before being tortured and killed. Their bodies were dumped in the swamps of the city’s Rayerbazar area, where a memorial stands today.

Like Shyamali, families of an estimated three million people killed, 25,000 women and girls raped, many of them held as sex slaves and the more tortured and maimed by Pakistani forces and their Bengali collaborators (Razakars), have waited for a long time for justice. (TNN)

  • Madhesi leaders submit 11-point demand to PM Oli to end stir

KATHMANDU (TIP): Nepal’s Indian-origin Madhesi leaders on Monday submitted their 11-point demand to the goverment during their first meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to end the political logjam, but no breakthrough emerged from the tripartite talks attended by Opposition Nepali Congress.

After the talks, the government and the Madhesis said there was no agreement but the talks were headed in positive direction and they have agreed to meet again on December 2.

The government and opposition parties will sit for talks again ahead of the Wednesday meeting to forge a common stance on the demands presented by the Madhesi parties.

During the meeting today “both the sides agreed to resolve the issues relating to the Madhesi parties through bilateral and trilateral dialogue,” said Oli’s press advisor Pramod Dahal. This was the first meeting between Oli and representatives of agitating Madhesi parties.

Oli drew the attention of Madhesi leaders to the serious crisis facing the country due to the nearly three-month-long agitation by them near the border trading points with India. (PTI)

  • NATO to keep 12,000 troops in Afghanistan next year

BRUSSELS (TIP): Nato will keep some 12,000 troops in Afghanistan for an extra year in 2016 to prevent the country again becoming a terrorist safe haven, alliance head Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.

Nato’s resolute support advice and training mission was supposed to end this year but Taliban battlefield successes, especially their recent brief capture of the northern city of Kunduz, prompted a radical re-think.

“Today, Nato allies and Resolute Support operational partners have agreed to sustain the Resolute Support presence … during 2016,” Stoltenberg said after alliance foreign ministers endorsed the decision. “The mission … will continue to be kept under review and, if necessary, will be adjusted to ensure its effectiveness.” Troop numbers will be “12,000 approximately,” in line with current strength, he added.

US-led Nato invaded Afghanistan in 2001 shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks to oust the Taliban from Kabul. US troop numbers peaked at around 90,000. The alliance ended combat operations at the end of 2014, leaving in place the Resolute Support mission. Taliban militants are still mounting attacks while the Islamic State is gaining a foothold in the country. (AFP)
