Its back to School In Myanmar, Suu Kyi sends new members to parliament school

Aung San Suu Kyi is sending her newly elected MPs on a crash course on Myanmar’s parliament as they prepare to take their seats for the first time early next year, her party said today.

The veteran campaigner’s National League for Democracy party won a thunderous majority in the landmark November polls that are set to tip the balance of power away from the military for the first time in decades.

Some 390 NLD MPs will flood into parliament in February, mostly political newcomers with no experience of the Naypyidaw legislature, which itself has only been in operation since a quasi-civilian regime replaced military rule in 2011.

“The new MPs do know about politics but they need to learn more about the parliament,” party spokesman Win Htein said. He said a series of classes would teach the budding politicians about the operations of the legislature as well other key topics like the country’s controversial army-drafted constitution to help “improve their performance” as MPs.

The tutorials will be held in batches in Naypyidaw and later in Yangon in the coming weeks as the NLD prepares for its historic new role after a quarter century of opposition to military rule.

Suu Kyi and her party will face a slew of challenges when they take the helm, building on the reforms of recent years to revive Myanmar’s fortunes after nearly half a century of isolation and mismanagement under the former junta.

They will also have to work with the military, which continues to hold a quarter of parliament seats and control over key ministries. But NLD MPs hoping to hear educational pearls of wisdom from Suu Kyi herself will be disappointed.

  • White House to Hold Meetings with Sikh and Muslim Community Leaders

White House to Hold Meetings with Sikh and Muslim Community Leaders

WASHINGTON:  In the wake of increase in hate-crimes directed against Sikhs and Muslims after a deadly shooting in California, senior White House officials will hold meetings the leaders of these communities to discuss ways to address their concerns and challenges.

“The White House is routinely engaged in an active dialogue with faith leaders across the country. There are a number of engagements… The President does not plan to participate in any of the meetings that are planned,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters.

“Cecilia Munoz will lead with representatives of the American-Sikh community to discuss how the administration is supporting that community and to discuss ways to work together to address concerns and challenges,” Mr Earnest said.

Cecilia Munoz is director of White House Domestic Policy Council.

The White House had arranged a conference call with a broad array of faith-based organisations across the country after a number of hate crimes were reported in the country following the massacre of 14 people at a disability center in Southern California on December 2 by a Pakistani-origin Muslim couple, who investigators believe, were at least partially inspired by the Islamic State terror organisation.

In addition to this, there would be an in-person meeting convened with a smaller group of Muslim-American leaders, the press secretary said.

The American-Sikh community, numbering nearly half-a-million, has seen a spur in hate-crimes against them following the terror attack.

Last week, a Sikh temple in California was vandalised and a group of Sikh men were harassed by security staff and denied access to a stadium in San Diego city in California for an American football game because they were wearing turbans.

Earlier in 2012, a white supremacist has opened fire at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee, killing six people.

White House Celebrates Guru Nanak’s Birth Anniversary

WASHINGTON:  The White House celebrated the birth anniversary of Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak with top aides of President Barack Obama assuring the community of his full support.

“President Obama stands with, he stands behind you and he stands in solidarity with you. And we all have a responsibility to remind Americans what makes us great” President Obama’s senior adviser Valerie Jarrett told a gathering of the Sikh community from across the US.

The programme opened with Jesse Moore, Associate Director of Public Engagement, welcoming the guests. This was followed by a Sikh hymn performed by Manpreet Singh and Raghubir Singh from New Jersey on classical instruments like taus, dilruba and jodi.

When Jarrett greeted the gathering saying “Happy Gurpurab” a room full of Sikh men, women, and children cheered and clapped, according to a media release.

Dr Rajwant Singh, Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education, said, “The Sikh community is grateful for the powerful and supportive words of President Obama’s team today.”

“This sends an assuring signal to the entire community that this nation stands behind it,” he said.

Valerie Jarrett was given a Phulkari shawl, a typical Punjabi speciality, and a book on Sikh heritage and ethos as she was honoured by Sikh representatives from Sikh Coalition, Sikh Council on Religion and Education and United Sikhs.

Vanita Gupta, principal deputy assistant attorney general, said: “We at the Justice department continue to use all of the tools available to combat any violence or hate against the Sikh community.”

In his keynote address, Amritjit Singh of Ohio University discussed about “Guru Nanak: Equality and Social Justice”.

“Guru Nanak’s message has special resonance for us today where fear and ignorance are giving rise to hatred, violence, and intolerance,” he said. “The Guru had a sharp eye for the patterns of hypocrisy, intolerance, and exploitation.”

Nikki-Gurinder Kaur Singh of Colby College said the legacy of Guru Nanak empowers young Sikhs “with an identity which is equally American and Sikh.”

“It is a profound symbol of our being together and it expresses that we are Americans no matter what complexion or religion we may be.”

Indian American Senior Executive At Twitter To Quit

NEW YORK: Baljeet Singh, Twitter’s product lead in charge of video, will quit the company early next month, a media report said quoting a Twitter spokesperson.

Mr Singh, who works as a senior product director, joined Twitter two years ago after working with video sharing platform YouTube for more than five years, Re/code tech website reported on Wednesday.

Mr Singh will be the latest product leader to leave Twitter after Glenn Brown, an ad executive who was handling Twitter’s video ad push and left the company in October.

Twitter has recently been jolted by the departure of several top executives over the past six months, highlighted by the departure of three key product executives in June.

Video has been an important tool in the social media realm. Facebook and Snapchat are building their businesses around video.

Many content creators go to YouTube and Facebook to share their work.

Not ashamed My daughter’s name was Jyoti Singh | Nirbhaya named by mother

Rape victims cannot be named under Indian law.NEW DELHI: In a brave homage to her daughter, the mother of the December 16 gangrape victim today took her name in public, and said people who commit heinous crimes like rape should hang their heads in shame and not the victims or their families. Asha Singh told a crowd on Wednesday, December 16, that she felt “no shame” in announcing her daughter’s name: “Her name was Jyoti Singh.”

The 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally sexually assaulted on the ill-fated night of December 16 three years ago, and died 13 days later, triggering a massive public outrage. Among many, her spirit continued to live, and in tribute she was given the name ‘Nirbhaya’ or brave heart.

Rape victims cannot be named under Indian law.

Their identities are often hidden in a bid to protect them from being shunned in society.

“I say this in front of you all that her name was Jyoti Singh,” Asha Singh said at a public gathering in Delhi, three years to the day of the attack.

“There is no need for us to feel any shame. It is the perpetrators of heinous crimes who must feel ashamed of themselves.”

Air India technician gets ‘sucked into aircraft engine’, Dies

Mumbai (TIP): Ravi Subramanian, an Air India technician, died on Wednesday, December 16, after he was sucked into the engine of a parked plane at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The accident happened as the jet of flight AI 619 from Mumbai to Hyderabad was being pushed back for departure. Subramanian got pulled into the engine and died instantly. Airport sources say his body is severely mutilated.

Air India chairman Ashwani Lohani described the accident as a “mishap”, but it is not yet clear what happened.

“We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident,” Mr Lohani said. He added that the incident is being investigated.

The Times of India, quoting Air India sources, reported that the accident occurred when the co-pilot started the engine at the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport.

“No one knew what happened. All of a sudden we heard that the technician has been sucked into the engine,” the newspaper quoted an airline source as saying.

An Air India official told The Hindustan Times they were “absolutely clueless on how this person was near the aircraft”.

“Only an inquiry can establish whose negligence it was and whether the engine should have been switched on at that time,” an airline official said.

The Indian Express reported that the victim was “near the nose wheel” with the tow van “when the engine started and he was sucked in”.

Mr Lohani has expressed his condolences to the family.

The state-owned national airline, which is battling huge debts and not reported a profit since 2007, has been often hit by technical glitches, delays and crew turning up late for flights.

In April, Air India removed two pilots from duty after they reportedly fought inside the cockpit just before takeoff from Delhi.

In 2009, pilots and cabin crew came to blows on an Air India flight from the United Arab Emirates to Delhi, with 106 passengers and seven crew on board.

INDIA’s ISRO successfully puts 6 Singapore satellites in precise orbit

CHENNAI: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has added another country to its client list for commercial satellite launches after Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C29) put in orbit six Singapore satellites on Wednesday.

Antrix Corporation, the commercial arm of ISRO, has launched more than 55 foreign satellites of 20 countries including of the US, the UK, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Korea.

A core-alone version of the PSLV (without solid strap-ons) took off from the first launch pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, 100km north of Chennai, at 6pm on Wednesday. A little more than 18 minutes later, the rocket ejected the 400kg TeLEOS-1 into a 555km circular orbit. The other five satellites (two micro satellites and one nano satellite) were put in orbit within another three minutes before the fourth stage of the rocket re-started to move away from the satellites before.

Soon after the last of the satellites was put in the orbit, Isro chairman A S Kiran Kumar announced the mission a success. It was PSLV 32nd flight, and the 31st consecutively successful one. The workhorse rocket has become so reliable that the chairman said Isro would now have almost monthly launches of PSLV.

Satish Dhawan Space Centre director P Kunhikrishnan called it another remarkable achievement amidst concerns of weather conditions. “There was rainfall over the region … despite the weather conditions, the team has been able to pull off a perfect launch,” he said

  • Elderly Sikh Passenger Labelled ‘Bin Laden’ On Plane

Elderly Sikh Passenger Labelled ‘Bin Laden’ On Plane

NEW YORK:  An elderly Sikh man in the US was filmed while sleeping on a flight by a co-passenger who posted the video online with a title ‘Would You Feel Safe’ and a description that says “flying with bin laden.”

Darshan Singh, who was travelling on a Jetblue flight from New York to California in November, didn’t exchange words with the man sitting next to him and was surprised when he saw his video online, Sikh advocacy group United Sikhs said.

The 39-second video of Mr Singh, a California resident, has been viewed over 83,000 times since it was posted on Youtube on December 9.

Mr Singh’s 20-year-old daughter informed the group that a video of her father sleeping on the JetBlue flight, recorded by the man sitting next to him, was circulating on the internet, said Manwinder Singh, Director, United Sikhs.

“This act of ignorance is the latest in a series of anti-Sikh hostility in the days following the horrific shooting in San Bernardino, California on December 2,” he said.

On December 6, a Gurudwara was vandalized with an anti-ISIS graffiti. On the same day, four Sikh men were stopped from entering a football game because of their turbans.

Hundreds of people have commented on the video, most of them condemning the person who filmed it, with more than 1,170 people hitting the “dislike” button.

“Sikhs are known to be fearless warriors and ones who are willing to give up their lives for others, so you should feel safe,” one person commented on the video.

The Sikh group is trying to get the video removed from the Youtube.

“Incidents like this are shocking. No one, Sikh, Muslim, or otherwise should be afraid to travel. These types of incidents only weaken the fabric of our nation,” said Jaspreet Kaur, Staff attorney of the group.

“It’s everyone’s responsibility to be aware of acts of ignorance around them and to report them when they see them.

Only then can we unify ourselves against hate, ignorance and discrimination,” she added.

Sikh-Americans have long been the target of racially motivated violence and discrimination in the United States, especially after the 9/11 terror attacks.

In September, a Sikh-American was viciously assaulted in a suburb outside of Chicago after being called “Bin Laden”. In 2014, Sandeep Singh, a Sikh American in New York City, was run over and dragged 30 feet after being called a “terrorist”.

US-based Sikhs have launched a national campaign to tackle the growing misperceptions about their community post 9/11 terror attacks.

  • Malala Condemns Trump’s ‘ideology of Hatred’

Malala Condemns Trump’s ‘ideology of Hatred’

BIRMIMGHAM, UK (TIP): Nobel prize winner Malala Yousafzai condemned Donald Trump’s views on Muslims on Tuesday, December 15 at a sombre ceremony to remember the 134 children killed in a Taliban attack on a Pakistani school a year ago.

“Well, that’s really tragic that you hear these comments which are full of hatred, full of this ideology of being discriminative towards others,” Malala told AFP, in response to recent comments by the US Republican presidential candidate.

Trump has been heavily criticized for calling for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States after a Muslim husband and wife killed 14 people in a shooting rampage in California, an incident classified as a terrorist act.

Speaking at the ceremony in the city of Birmingham, central England, Malala’s father Ziauddin Yousafzai also criticized Trump’s comments.

“It will be very unfair, very unjust that we associate 1.6 billion with a few terrorist organizations,” he said, referring to the number of Muslims worldwide.

The event was organized by peace prize winner Malala and her family, and two survivors of the attack, Ahmad Nawaz, 14, and Mohammed Ibrahim, 13, took part.

The massacre saw nine extremists scale the walls of an army-run school in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, lobbing grenades and opening fire on terrified children and teachers.

“There are these terrorist attacks happening, for example what happened in Paris or what happened in Peshawar a year ago,” Malala said, referring to last month’s Islamic State attack in Paris that killed 130 people.

“It’s not just needed in Pakistan but across the world. If we want to end terrorism we need to bring quality education so we defeat the mindset of terrorism mentality and of hatred.”

Nawaz, dressed in a traditional shalwar kameez, recounted the horror of the December 16, 2014 Peshawar attack, in which 17 adults were also killed.

“I saw my teacher burned alive in that incident and the friends with whom I was playing,” he told AFP.

“I was surrounded by the dead bodies of those friends. So it was the horrifying experience of my life and I still have nightmares.”

Nawaz was shot in the arm. His brother was killed.

Ibrahim was in a wheelchair, having been paralyzed from the waist down.

The Taliban assault dredged up painful memories for Malala’s family: she was shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012 after she had publicly advocated education for girls.

“When I was watching all these graphics and all these news on television, my wife was crying, I was crying,” Malala’s father told AFP.

“It was unbearable. It was very hard to watch. Our own trauma revived,” he said.

“We don’t curse people, it’s a sin to curse and we never cursed Talibans for attacking our daughter, but I must say we cursed them that day.”

  • H-1B, L-1 Visa Fee hiked by upto $4500

H-1B, L-1 Visa Fee hiked by upto $4500

WASHINGTON (TIP): The US Congress has imposed a special fee of up to $4,500 on the H-1B and L-1 visas popular among Indian IT companies to fund a 9/11 healthcare act and biometric tracking system.

Such a move has been made part of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act which funds health screenings and treatments for 9/11 first responders.

The bill, named after Detective James Zadroga who died of a respiratory illness in 2006, expired on October 1. Lawmakers are seeking to permanently extend the bill and want to generate necessary funds by imposing a $2,000 additional fee on H-1B visas.

The bill has been written in such a way that it would impact only Indian companies.

Congressional leaders, while agreeing on the $1.1 trillion spending bill, yesterday decided to impose a special fee of $4,000 on certain categories of H-1B visas and $4,500 on L-1 visas. The US House of Representatives is slated to vote on the $1.1 trillion spending bill deal later today.

According to the agreed bill, the new $4,000 fee would apply to companies having at least 50 employees with 50 per cent of their employees on H-1B or L-1 visa. Such companies would have to pay a new fee of $4,000 for H-1B visas and $4,500 for L-1 visas.

While the specific provisions of the spending bill has no mention of Indian IT companies, the language of the bill has been written in such a way that it would have a big impact on Indian IT companies.

Though the lawmakers behind the bill described it as a temporary provision, the new H-1B and L-1 visa fee increase is for a period of 10 years as against a previous provision of five years. The previous such provision from 2010 to 2015 of $2,000 for H-1B visas lapsed on September 30.

In a study released in September this year, NASSCOM, a trade association of Indian IT industry, said Indian IT companies have paid between $70 to $80 million annually for the US Treasury approximately. Given that, the new punitive measure is expected to raise between $1.4 billion and $1.6 billion every year for the next one decade.

Expecting that this provision would generate more than $1 billion per annum, the bill says that after $1 billion is deposited for 9/11 first responders and the Biometrics Ext account, the rest of the money would be deposited in the general fund of the Treasury.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the issue with US President Barack Obama when the latter telephoned him to thank for his leadership role on achieving the historic agreement on climate change in Paris on December 12.

It is learnt that the White House did raise its concerns with the Congressional leaders on the impact of such a move to dramatically increase H-1B and L-1 visas fees on India-US relationship. However, the Republican-majority Congress decided to ignore the concerns of the White House and doubled the H-1B and L-1 fees for Indian IT companies.

  • Indian American Professor creates Super-condom which Kills HIV virus

Indian American Professor creates Super-condom which Kills HIV virus

HIV / AIDS is a global killer and affects many lives worldwide every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were approximately 36.9 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2014. Of these, 2.6 million were children. HIV usually spreads through unprotected sex with an already infected person, sharing needles and blood transfusions.

Currently, the only way to prevent an infection is to take protective measures like using condoms while having sex, using disposable needles and screening of blood for infections before transfusion.

An Indian-American professor has created a condom that puts the safe back into sex with a new supercondom that fights HIV and prevent other STD’s and unwanted pregnancies.

Dr Mahua Choudhury has made the condom from an elastic polymer called hydrogel; the condom is mixed with a plant-based antioxidant ingredient that has anti-HIV properties, as reported by Digital Trends.

“We are not only making a novel material for condoms to prevent the HIV infection, but we are also aiming to eradicate this infection if possible,” said lead researcher Mahua Choudhury, assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center’s Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy in the US.

“Supercondom could help fight against HIV infection and may as well prevent unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases and if we succeed, it will revolutionize the HIV prevention initiative,” Choudhury, who studied molecular biology, biophysics and genetics in India before getting her PhD in the US, noted.

Mahua Choudhury was one of the 54 people who were awarded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s “Grand Challenge in Global Health” grant.

This year’s initiative asked winning recipients to create an affordable, latex-free condom to help battle the HIV epidemic, which is currently affecting 35 million people in the world.

“If you can make it really affordable, and really appealing, it could be a life-saving thing,” Choudhury said.

The hydrogel in Choudhury’s condom is designed with an embedded plant-based antioxidant that is released when the condom’s walls are broken, Digital Trends reported.

This antioxidant has proven anti-HIV properties, and can stop the virus from replicating.

The antioxidant laced in the hydrogel also boasts stimulant properties that enhance physiological stimulation and feelings of pleasure during sex, the report noted.

  • Indian American Sikh Woman Claims Racial Discrimination From Police

Indian American Sikh Woman Claims Racial Discrimination From Police

An Indian American sikh woman said she was questioned by California police after she asked to buy some ammunition for her AR-15 rifle.

Sim Sangha, 24, is a certified firearms instructor and believes she was racially profiled in Fremont, California, after a conversation with a Dick’s Sporting Goods employee about AR-15 ammunition led to a police visit to her home, reported KNTV-TV.

“I’m Sikh. I’m Indian. I was born and raised in America. I’m a citizen here,” Ms. Sangha told NBC.

“I don’t know if it’s my skin color or that I’m Indian,” Sangha said. “I’m not a Muslim, but even if I were, that’s no reason to call police to my home, instantly.”

Sangha, who is preparing to join the Los Angeles Police Department, did not buy ammunition for her rifle — which is the same type of weapon used by a Muslim couple earlier this month to kill 14 co-workers and wound 17 others in San Bernardino.

She only bought an exercise mask at the sporting goods store, and she believes she was racially profiled.

“They singled me out because of the way I look,” Sangha said. “I’ve had friends buy bulk ammo, and they’ve never had police show up at their door.”

Police said the officers apologized to Sangha, but a spokeswoman for the department said they had a duty to investigate activity that residents considered “suspicious.”

The police spokeswoman said officers were on heightened alert following the mass shootings in Southern California, which investigators have linked to Islamic terrorism.

Dick’s Sporting Goods did not return The Indian Panorama’s requests for comment.

  • Robber calls Indian American store clerk ISIS “terrorist”

Robber calls Indian American store clerk ISIS “terrorist”

In another hate crime, an armed robber shot a store clerk of Indian origin (sikh) in the face after accusing him of being an “ISIS terrorist.”

Following the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, hate crimes against Muslims on the rise across the United States. People are not only demonizing the community for the crimes committed by a few extremists, but they are also attacking them for their faith.

The incident took place at a convenience shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan, just before midnight on Saturday, December 12. Although it started out with gun-wielding bandits entering the store and demanding money, the robbery took a more disturbing turn as the unidentified man pointed his gun at an Indian-American store clerk.

The store manager Gulreen Kaur told the police that after the clerk handed over a bag of cash, the robber stuck the gun in his mouth and said something along the lines of, “I shot people like you overseas in the Middle East.”

The masked man also called the 34-year-old Indian immigrant, who goes by Tony, a “terrorist” and a member of ISIS — even though, as it was revealed later, the clerk is not even Muslim.

The robber then dragged Tony into the backroom of the store and ordered him to stand on his knees. However, the struggle that ensued led to a bullet going through the clerk’s cheek. Although there is no video of the shooting incident, Grand Rapids police Sgt. Terry Dixon has confirmed the manager’s statements.

“We’re very proud of how [the clerk] responded in light of this incident. This could’ve been much, much worse given the apparent intent of the suspect,” Dixon told local media. “If the victim had not fought off the suspect, then this could’ve been a much more serious incident.”

Fortunately, Tony is still alive and recovering in a hospital.

“We shouldn’t be targeted for it because we have nothing to do with it. We are just trying to live our normal lives,” the store manager said. “I grew up here and a lot of my Punjabi friends did. Whether we’re Indian or whether we’re (not), it doesn’t matter. You shouldn’t specifically be going for one race.”

  • Obama Names Indian American Labor Trafficking Survivor to U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking

Obama Names Indian American Labor Trafficking Survivor to U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking

President Barack Obama, Dec. 16, announced several administration posts in the Advisory Council on Human Trafficking.

One of the new appointed members include Indian American Harold d’Souza who himself had been a victim of Human Trafficking when he came to the United States in 2003.

Other members of the council are Evelyn Chumbow, Minh Dang, Tina Frundt, Ima Matul Maisaroh, Ronny Marty, Florencia Molina, Bukola Love Oriola, Suamhirs Piraino-Guzman, Sheila White and Shandra Woworuntu, reports India West.

The International Labour Organization estimated the total market value of human trafficking to be $32 billion in 2005. Those profits have since ballooned to $96 billion globally, according to a study released by the Ricky Martin Foundation in May.

Mr Obama announced his intent to appoint the several individuals to key Administration posts.

“I am honoured that these talented individuals have decided to serve our country. They bring their years of experience and expertise to this Administration, and I look forward to working with them,” Mr Obama said in a statement.

Currently, D’Souza is a senior supply chain associate for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, a position in which he has held for the last 6 years.

He is also a founding member of the National Survivor Network and is active with End Slavery Cincinnati.

Earlier in his career, he served as a Sales Manager in India.

Mr D’Souza received an LLB and M Com from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara.

“I am a survivor of labour trafficking and debt bondage and a dedicated advocate against human trafficking,” he wrote on his LinkedIn page.

This year, the Greater Cincinnati Human Trafficking Conference 2015 invited him to be an advocate for creating awareness about human trafficking in the community.

Indian American Sikh Fans can’t enter Stadium if they wear Turbans

Three Sikh Americans say they were nearly barred from watching their team at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California, because they were wearing turbans, according to reports.

Denver Broncos fan Varinder Malhi and his friends were sporting jerseys, hats and other garb heading into the game, but it was the color-coordinated turbans — typically worn by Sikh men — that prompted San Diego Chargers security to say they couldn’t enter the game, ABC San Diego reports.

The security official reportedly said the men would have to remove their turbans. One of the men denied entry Verinder Malhi, explained to a guard at the stadium that his religion prohibited him and his friends from removing their headgear, according to an ABC10 news report published Dec. 11. The fans were ultimately allowed in, but warned they would not be able to wear their turbans again if they came back to the stadium.

But the harassment didn’t end there. On their way out, the group’s car was subjected to a search by a bomb squad after a call to police claimed the men were putting a bag in the trunk suspiciously. Someone at the game had called San Diego police to report the men were rummaging in the trunk of a car and then left the parking lot, police told ABC San Diego.

A bystander took a photo of a bomb-sniffing dog inspecting the vehicle and sent it to the TV station. Malhi said the men had put a bag into the trunk after realizing they couldn’t bring it inside the stadium.

“It’s bad, I mean, this is embarrassing for me, because we are Americans at the end of the day,” Malhi told ABC. “And we are not supposed to be afraid of fellow Americans.”

Bill Stetson, head of security for the Chargers, and the San Diego Police Department could not be reached for comment.

In the years since 9/11, members of the Sikh faith have been unintended targets of hate crimes and harassment from people who mistake them for Muslims, according to the Sikh Coalition, an anti-bullying, education and advocacy group.

“Of course we all agree that safety and security is a priority for this country, but it shouldn’t come at a cost to personal freedoms,” said Simran Jeet Singh, a senior religion fellow with the coalition. “Racial profiling doesn’t help anybody. It doesn’t make us safe as a nation — it makes us less safe by making certain individuals feel like they’re not welcome in this country.”

Swiss bank releases list of dormant accounts, 6 Indians among list

TIP NEWSWIRE: The names of at least six individuals with an Indian connection figure in the list of unclaimed bank accounts made public by Switzerland on Wednesday. Besides names and addresses, one entry also lists the date of birth and account number of an individual.

The names are Bernet Rosmarie, Spencer Charlotte (German national) and Vachek Pierre (born January 1, 1908, bank account number 538452)—all with residences in Bombay (presently Mumbai), while Bahadur Chandra Singh is from Dehradun. A Dr Mohan Lal from Paris and one Kishore Lall also figure in the list.

The list has over 2,600 accounts and safe deposit boxes and comprises only those accounts that has at least 500 Swiss francs and are unclaimed for at least 60 years. The value lying in the dormant accounts is estimated at 44 million Swiss franc (about Rs 300 crore).

Daniela Flückiger, head of communication, Swiss Bankers Association (SBA), told HT, “We don’t have data for specific countries or account holders from specific countries. Neither do we have insights into the amount of money.”

According to the Swiss Bankers Association, over 44 million Swiss francs ($44.5 million) is lying in different accounts, which are not managed for the past several decades since 1955. Also, close to 80 safety deposit boxes are still to be claimed by the owners.

The association has created a separate website www.dormantaccounts.ch for people to check the names listed as dormant accounts.

The SBA rules stipulate that the family members and legal heirs of these individuals will have time up to five years to lay claim for these accounts. This is the first time that Switzerland has published such a list that is aimed at giving their owners’ heirs a chance to claim the funds in these accounts.

“If no legitimate party claims the assets that have been published within one year of publication, the banks must by law transfer the assets in question to the government,” SBA said.

There are sizeable number of people from Switzerland, Germany, France, UK, US, Turkey, Austria and other countries. The list follows a new law in Switzerland that mandates publication of the names of the owners of very old dormant customer relationships on an annual basis starting 2015.

Google will build new campus in Hyderabad: Sundar Pichai

NEW DELHI (TIP): Sundar Pichai, the Indian-origin CEO of Google, said that the company will build a new campus in Hyderabad to enhance capabilities, on Wednesday, December 16.

Regarding the company’s expansion plans in India, Pichai said: “We will ramp up our engineering investments at our Bangalore and Hyderabad facilities. “Google is looking at hiring people for Bangalore and Hyderabad… We will also build a huge new campus in Hyderabad to build capabilities.”

He did not disclose the investment proposed by the company, which now has 1,500 employees in India.

“It makes a lot of sense to invest in India as what we build here will have global usage,” Pichai said.

“This country has given me and Google so much. I just hope we can give much more to the country,” Pichai said, adding, “a lot of what today is about is how we build products for the next billion Indian users, yet to come online.”

Pichai also said that Google will provide wi-fi connectivity in 100 railway stations across India in 2016 as part of its association with RailTel.

“In our attempt to provide internet access to people, we have decided to provide Wi-Fi at 400 railway stations in association with RailTel. The first 100 stations will come online by 2016-end. Mumbai Central station will be online by early January,” Pichai said at ‘Google for India’ event.

He said the American multinational technology company was working towards including as many people as possible in the use of internet in India, and added the company will develop products in India that have global usage.

Later in the day, Pichai met union Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who said Google has reached in-principle agreement with the Indian government for its research and development project, Loon.

The project is aimed at providing internet connectivity in rural India.

“I have proposed Google to partner with the state-owned telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited for the pilot project,” Prasad said.

Pichai’s announcements were part of the assurance Google held out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the search engine giant’s headquarters at Mountain View, Santa Clara county, California, in September.

This is Chennai-born Pichai’s first visit to India after he became the CEO of the restructured Google in August.

The company is beginning training programmes for two million new Android developers over the next three years that will make it easier for Indian developers to build solutions to local problems.

The online search giant is also partnering with the National Skill Development Council for this.

Pichai also laid out Google’s approach to promoting the Internet in India.

First, Google aims to give people in India and other developing countries better access to full internet through better connectivity and high-quality software.

Second, Google is making Google products work better for Indians. And Google wants to make it easier for Indians to build on top of Google’s global platforms like Android and Chrome to build solutions to local problems.

He also pointed out how women are lagging behind in Internet use in India and underlined that it is important that sizeable number of women should have access to Internet.

“By 2018, more than 500 million users will be online in India, from all 29 states, speaking over 23 languages. But in 2020, over 30 percent of mobile Internet will still be from 2G connections.

“Google has been on a long journey in India to build products that connect more people, regardless of cost, connectivity, language, gender, or location,” Rajan Anandan, vice president of Google in India and Southeast Asia, said.

  • Harendra Singh arrested again – Long Island indicted restaurateur in violation of bail bond

Harendra Singh arrested again – Long Island indicted restaurateur in violation of bail bond

MINEOLA, NY (TIP): Long Island restaurateur Harendra Singh was re-arrested by FBI agents Wednesday, December 16,  on a charge of violating the conditions of his release on $5 million bond by submitting a fraudulent loan application, according to a Newsday report.

Singh was ordered jailed until at least a hearing Thursday by U.S. Magistrate Arlene Lindsay at the federal court house in Central Islip.

Newsday recounted that Singh was arrested in September and released on bond with the proviso that he engage in no criminal activity. He was re-arrested by FBI agents Wednesday after he was asked to come to the court house to report to pre-trial services, officials said. That agency supervises federal defendants.

The original charges against Singh included allegedly bribing a former Town of Oyster Bay deputy attorney in order to have the town give him an “indirect guarantee” of $32 million in loans. The attorney allegedly received $50,000 in checks made out to cash and a $36,000 luxury car lease.

Singh has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Eastern District federal prosecutors Catherine Mirabile, Lara Treinis Gatz and Raymond Tierney originally argued that Singh should not be released on the bond because he was an economic danger to the community and might commit further crimes.

Wednesday, they reiterated those arguments in court.

Mirabile told the court that the allegedly fraudulent loan application was part of a continuing pattern of Singh’s illegal business actions, saying that he had applied in the past “numerous” times for fraudulent loans.

Mirabile, Gatz and Tierney also noted in court papers that both Singh’ wife, Ruby Singh, and mother, Rajeswari Singh, had acted as sureties on the $5 million bond, as people guaranteeing the payment of the bond and ensuring he meet its conditions.

“It is clear not only that the defendant has violated the conditions of his release, but also that his wife and mother do not provide moral suasion as sureties on the bond,” the three wrote.

Singh’s attorney, Anthony La Pinta, of Hauppauge, who said he had not had time to familiarize himself with the prosecutors claims, declined to comment after he left the courtroom.

The three prosecutors said in papers that: “Between November 2, 2015 and December 3,, 2015, the defendant submitted…fraudulent documents in support of a credit application…in direct violation of his conditions of release.”

The documents claimed that Singh needed a loan to purchase restaurant equipment from a contractor, and submitted a phony bill or invoice from the contractor to the loan company. The contractor, however, contacted the FBI, Mirabile said.

Mirabile, Treinis Gatz and Tierney, wrote in the papers requesting that that Singh be permanently detained, that he submitted an application to an unnamed private lending company for $148,511, claiming an intended purchase of restaurant equipment for one of the defendant’s restaurants, “H.R. Singleton’s,” in Bethpage.

“Among other items, the Invoice identifies equipment to be purchased from the Contracting Company such as $8,950.00 for lighting fixtures, $12,560.00 for a wine cooler, $12,000.000 for chairs, $14,950.00 for tables, and $15,759.00 for booths,” their papers said.

The lender requested additional information from Singh, including “follow-up questions, and these calls were not returned. Thereafter, the Private Lender cancelled the transaction,” court papers said.

The contractor was troubled that he had been involved by Singh in what he considered a questionable scheme and contacted the FBI earlier this month, the papers say.

“The Contractor informed the FBI special agent that the Invoice was a fake, stating that the Contracting Company had not prepared the Invoice, that the Contractor had never seen the Invoice before, and was not aware the Invoice had been created,” the prosecutors said.

Singh’s former attorney, Joseph Conway, of Mineola, has said in court that the federal prosecution of his client is motivated by the desire of prosecutors and agents to have him provide compromising information on important politicians with whom he has friendships.

Conway has said that Singh has no such information to provide.

Death of six-month-old clouds demolition drive by Railways | Father Changes stand

A six-month-old infant had reportedly died in West Delhi’s Shakur Basti, where a demolition drive was carried out by railway authorities, December 12, where close to 500 shanties were razed to the ground.

The infant’s father has now said that he knew about the drive a day earlier, so the family had packed their bags and left them on the bed. The bags rolled off the bed and fell on the sleeping child.

The statement from the father could be a result of cohesion, as earlier he accused the railway department for the death of his daughter.

Investigations are underway in this developing story.

Demolition drive by Railways in New Delhi | High Court Questions Timing

More than 500 slums were demolished in an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the Indian Railways in Shakur Basti on Saturday, December 12.

The railways, in a statement, said encroachments had to be cleared to make space for a new terminal in the basti. It maintained that Delhi Police and DUSIB officials were informed in advance, as per rules.

“In the last nine months, three notices had been issued to encroachers to vacate railway land. The first one was issued in March. The second notice directed them to vacate by September 30, but they did not do so. The last notice asked them to vacate by December 12,” it said.

Railways came under fire from the Delhi High Court Monday, December 14, for clearing the Shakurbasti jhuggi cluster “without alternate arrangements” for rehabilitation of its residents “in the biting cold”.

“What was the tearing hurry to demolish in December? …You really don’t care about the people, you just want to remove them,” the bench of Justices

S Muralidhar and Vibhu Bakhru told Railways counsel Jagjeet Singh, pointing out that there were “a number of children suffering out there”.

U.S. Army allows Sikh soldier to keep beard | Religious Freedom

In a rare accommodation, the U.S. Army has allowed a Sikh soldier to temporarily keep his beard and wear his turban while serving in an active combat position.

This is an important exception and the right move by the U.S. Army. The move sends a strong message to the world that United States supports religious freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance.

Captain Simratpal Singh, 27, had to cut his hair on his first day at the United States Military Academy at West Point nearly 10 years ago since the Army would not allow a soldier with long hair or a beard, a report in the New York Times said.

Last week, however, the Army finally granted Singh, who led a platoon of combat engineers who cleared roadside bombs in Afghanistan and was awarded the Bronze Star, a religious accommodation under which he is allowed to grow his beard and wrap his hair in a turban.

“It is wonderful. I had been living a double life, wearing a turban only at home,” he told the Times. “My two worlds have finally come back together. A true Sikh is supposed to stand out, so he can defend those who cannot defend themselves,” he said, adding that he was prepared to sue if the accommodation was not made permanent.

Currently, three Sikh-Americans are serving the US military — Major Kamaljeet Singh, Captain Tejdeep Singh Rattan and Corporal Simranpreet Singh Lamba.
