Alabama’s governor apologises to the Patels & Indian Government for Cops misconduct

Alabama’s governor apologized to the government of India for the police officer who assaulted and injured an Indian grandfather on Feb. 6.

Governor Robert Bentley has also ordered his state to investigate exactly what happened, alongside an FBI probe.

The use of “excessive force” left Sureshbhai Patel, 57 years old, partially paralyzed. “I sincerely hope that Mr. Patel continues to improve and that he will regain full use of his legs,” Bentley said in a letter to India’s consulate in Atlanta.

The attack on Patel has garnered sympathy and outrage from all corners of the world (and social media), to help the Patel family with medical bills, “Sureshbhai Patel’s Recovery Fund” was created on the crowd-funding platform GoFundMe.com. The campaign’s goal was to raise $100,000 but within six days, it has drawn donations worth nearly $190,000. The page was started by Aakash Patel, who is not related to the victim and should be given credit for mustering the support the case truly desreved.

  • The Suit that was – BID FOR PM MODI’S PINSTRIPE SUIT

Lastest Update -Earlier, the diamond baron spearheading the world-class Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) project formed a ring to get the personalized monogramed pinstripe suit of the Prime Minister put up at auction in the city’s Science Centre.

On the final day, leading diamond company owners including Diamond Trading Company (DTC) sightholders have descended at the auction venue to raise the pitch.

They have also roped in Lavji Badhsha (Patel), a former diamantaires, who is now into realty business, in a big way. After the Dharmanandan Diamond company raised the suit price at Rs 1.61 crore, a textile trader named Rajesh Jain bid for 1.65 crore.

However, Lavji Badhsha threw his hat in the ring by increasing the bid money at 1.71 crore.

A diamond baron said, “We will not let go the Modi suit out of Surat. The suit will be displayed at the upcoming SDB as a memorabilia. For this, we are ready to pay any price at the auction.”

Previous Update 19th Feb 2015 (below)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wore a pinstripe monogrammed suit in his meeting with President Barack Obama last month when Obama had come at India’s Republic Day.

The said suit was rumoured to cost around 10 lacs and carried Narendra Modi name in gold thread monogrammed on a closer inspection. The stripes were actually tiny letters spelling out his name in full– Narendra Damodardas Modi–and embroidered vertically down the stripe.

Narendra Modi had earlier this week put the suit along with 455 other items on auction in a 3 Day auction event at Surat. Narendra Modi is generating funds for his ambitious Clean Ganga RPT Ganga Mission.

On Day 1 in Surat, a whopping Rs 1.11 crore has been the bid by a Gujarati NRI in an auction today for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial pinstripe monogrammed bandhgala suit.

The suit drew a lot of attention in the Delhi Assembly elections with all political parties making it one of the political agendas against Narendra Modi. Many are still calling the auction a disaster control exercise.

Narendra Modi is known for raising funds in similar fashion during his chief ministerial tenure in Gujarat and started a trend to auction the gifts that he received in a year and it was donated to Kanya Kelavani Yojna for girl child education.

The event was organised at SMC’s Science Convention Centre at city-lights road in Surat as the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had decided to hold the auction event in the city.

”Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suit, that he wore during his meeting with President Barack Obama last month, along with other 455 items that he received as gifts during his tenure as Prime Minister will be auctioned at a three-day event in Surat,” Surat Municipal Commissioner Milind Toravane told PTI.

Toravane said no base price has been fixed for any of the items to come under the hammer.

On Day 2 of the Auctions – Bhavnagar-based diamond trader bids Rs 1.40 crore for PM Modi’s suit. The highest closing offer on the second day came from a diamond trader and ship-breaking tycoon from Bhavnagar, K.K. Sharma, who is also the chairman of the Leela Group of Companies.

Sharma is likely to be present to pick up delivery of the Modi suit if his bid of Rs 1.40 crore proves the highest on Friday, his official agent Chirag Mehta told media persons.

  • Pakistan’s new military courts prepare to launch the first terrorist hearings

Pakistani lawmakers have voted to try terror suspects in military courts in a bid to tackle insurgents after last month’s school massacre. But legal experts suggest this could become a reason for concern.

As Pakistan’s new military courts prepare to launch the first terrorist hearings, new questions emerge for US-India relations over how to press Pakistan for the trials of anti-Indian terrorists.

As the US continues to bolster relations with India, the Obama administration faces pressure to heighten its push for a Pakistani crackdown on groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which is believed to have carried out the 2008 attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), which has focused attacks on the Jammu and Kashmir state, and the Haqqani Network, which bombed the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan in 2008 killing 58 people.

These groups have traditionally been protected by Pakistan, but US Secretary of State John Kerry said he reached a “strong consensus” with Pakistani leaders during a recent visit to Islamabad. Kerry said they agreed to combat “all forms of terrorism,” indicating that groups such as Let, JeM, and the Haqqani Network would be subject to a similar military crackdown by the Pakistani military that up until now has largely focused on Taliban factions in the country, known as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

But Bruce Riedel, who served for 30 years in the Central Intelligence Agency and has been a senior advisor to the last four US presidents on South Asia and Middle Eastern affairs, said that he doesn’t expect Pakistan’s military courts to take on LeT. Riedel added that any concerted US push for Pakistan to do so will likely be ineffective, saying that LeT enjoys the protection of the country’s military. “The US has put lots of pressure on Pakistan to no avail,” said Riedel in an e-mail.

Obama vows to fight courts and Congress on immigration ruling

The Obama administration promised Tuesday to fight against opposition from both the courts and Congress to keep in place its expansive new programs to shield millions of immigrants from deportation, a key piece of the president’s effort to shape his legacy in his final years in office.

[quote_box_center] Also Read – Obama Administration Dealt Setback on Immigration’s Deferred Action Plan[/quote_box_center]

A federal judge in Texas issued an order late Monday that temporarily blocked the administration from putting into effect President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. The ruling touched off a day of cheering by Republicans, logistical and legal scrambling in the White House and vigorous efforts by advocates around the country to reassure potential applicants that they shouldn’t give up.

The administration said it would swiftly appeal the order, which came less than 48 hours before immigration officials were scheduled to begin accepting applications for the first of the programs to defer deportation.

Despite that setback, the president predicted that courts would ultimately uphold his efforts as lawful.

“The law is on our side and history is on our side,” Obama told reporters in the Oval Office. “This is not the first time where a lower court judge has blocked something, or attempted to block something, that is ultimately going to be lawful. And I’m confident that it is well within my authority.”

This is not the first time where a lower court judge has blocked something, or attempted to block something, that is ultimately going to be lawful. – Said Obama

For now, though, his administration put on hold plans to start its expansion Wednesday of the 2012 program that has shielded from deportation nearly 600,000 young people, so-called Dreamers, and a much larger effort to defer action on deportations that could apply to about 4 million adults living in the U.S. illegally.

Obama Administration Dealt Setback on Immigration’s Deferred Action Plan

A federal judge’s move to temporarily block President Barack Obama ’s immigration actions encouraged Republican opponents and left in limbo millions of illegal immigrants facing the threat of deportation.

The Obama administration promised to appeal the injunction in the case brought by Texas and officials of 25 other states, who argued that the president overstepped his authority with a November executive action that would offer work permits and safe harbor from deportation to some four million people in the U.S. who met certain criteria.

DACA in 2012 allowed children under 16 who were brought to the U.S. before 2010 to remain in the country without fear of deportation for two years. In Jan 2015, Obama administration extended DACA status to three years; DACA recipients can also re-apply to retain their status once their three years are up.

Fate of more than 1.1 million children who are eligible for DACA now faces the brunt as 722,000 have already applied and now the status is on hold due the the conflict in the houses which are both controlled by the Republicans.

Another Hate Crime – Rhode Island Muslim School Vandalized

The Islamic School of Rhode island was vandalised with hate speech on this past saturday (14th). The school which opened in 2003 as the first Muslim school in the state has never been targeted before or has received any serious threats.

This time the message was clear in the form of an orange graffiti covering the school’s doors which made the intentions of the vandalizers clear “Now this is a hate crime.” Among other slurs scrawled on the school’s entrance — including “pigs,” and expletives referring to “Allah” — this one was quite clear.

In a press release Ibrahim Hooper said – “This apparently bias-motivated incident should be investigated as a hate crime, with the strongest possible charges brought against the perpetrators once they are apprehended,” | “The recent spike in anti-Muslim hate rhetoric and bias-motivated attacks on American Muslims and their institutions must be addressed by our nation’s leaders.” Ibrahim Hooper is the director of communications at the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

  • Indian-American Surgeon Dr Dinesh Vyas on a Mission back in India to save lives

Indian-American Surgeon Dr Dinesh Vyas on a Mission back in India to save lives

Indian-American surgeon Dr. Dinesh Vyas who is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University since 2011 is on a mission to save thousands of lives that are lost on Indian roads every day with an innovative training programme for trauma first responders using a $200,000 simulator dummy.

“It’s a shameful figure for me as a physician,” he told IANS in an email interview outlining his strategy that could easily save at least half of the road accident victims, most of whom are sole earning members of their families.

I can change the trauma situation with my existing team of 40 US surgeons and 50 Indian faculty members in the next four years,” said Mr Vyas.

He visits India four times a year to build up collaboration across the country to make it a self-sustaining process.

His team is also in touch with state governments in several states including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Telangana, 15 medical schools and NITI Ayog to extend the programme across India.

“We plan to start at least 50 centres across India each costing $700,000 with roughly two centres in every state,” said Dinesh Vyas whose team has trained more than 400 people in the last four months.

Starting cost of the programme is at least $20,000. “Most of it is borne by me and the host institute bears some cost of logistics,” Mr Vyas said.

“We take the simulators on loan at this point from the company at a subsidised rate to keep cost down for the initial phase,” he added.

Some leading corporate houses have also shown interest in the project, he said. His team is also trying to raise money through the CSR funds of foundations interested in Indian road safety or health needs.

“It gives a unique opportunity to NRI academic surgeons to pull together, central and state governments, with various private and government medical schools contributing and building a system for trauma care,” he said.

“Our research team has improvised the programme over the last 7-8 years with more than 20 visits to India and other countries to design the programme and curriculum,” said Mr Vyas.

The programmes are largely conducted in native language with sophisticated simulator dummies and other equipment and educational videos followed by question- answer and video debriefing sessions to enable all trainees to learn from their and others’ mistakes.

Another key feature is that it’s a “Trainer-Trainee programme: meaning we train both trainers and trainees during our visit and observe local trainers educate more trainees,” Dinesh Vyas said.

Run by a faculty of all dialect speakers from India recruited with the help of the Asian Studies Centre at Michigan State University, “This programme will train and educate people who cannot join the training centres we are starting in India,” Mr Vyas said.

“This helps us to identify the most involved, thoughtful, articulate and critical trainers to run and build a sustainable, high quality, motivated programme,” he said.

Later, the team stays engaged with the local trainers providing support through video conferences.
  • SARASWATI: GODDESS OF KNOWLEDGE

    SARASWATI: GODDESS OF KNOWLEDGE

The literal meaning of the name Sarasvati is the one who gives the essential knowledge (Sara) of our own Self (Sva). The goddess Sarasvati is also considered the Goddess of Learning, or of education, intelligence, crafts, arts, and skills. As she is the consort of Brahma, who is considered the source of all knowledge, Sarasvati is knowledge itself. Thus, many students or even scholars may worship her for her blessings. She is, therefore, depicted as white in complexion, and quite beautiful and graceful.

She is often depicted sitting on a lotus, which symbolizes that she is founded in the experience of the Absolute Truth. Thus, she not only has the knowledge but also the experience of the Highest Reality. She holds in her four hands a vina instrument, an akshamala (prayer beads) in the right hand, and a pustaka (book) in the left, which represents the knowledge of all sciences. Holding the book or scriptures in one hand also indicates that this knowledge alone can bring us to the Truth.

The vina shows the beauty of learning the fine arts. Playing her vina, she tunes the mind and intellect with her knowledge, and thus the seeker can be in harmony with the universe. The prayer beads represent all spiritual sciences, like meditation and japa (chanting the holy names of God), and, being held in the right hand, that it is more important than the secular knowledge contained in the book in her left hand. Her four arms represent her unrestricted power in the four directions.

She also represents creativity, or the combination of power and intelligence, the basis of creativity. Her name literally means the one who flows, which can be applied to thoughts, words, or the flow of a river. She is the deity of a river in the Rig-veda. Her other names include Sarada (giver of essence), Brahmi (wife of Brahma), Mahavidya (holder of supreme knowledge), Bharati (eloquence), Maha-vidya (transcendent knowledge), Arya (noble one), Maha-vani (the transcendent word), Kamadhenu (like the wish-fulfilling cow), Dhaneshvari (the divinity of wealth), and Vagishvari (mistress of speech).

It is through speech that knowledge manifests in action. It is through her that language and writing is revealed. She is also occasionally shown with five faces and eight hands, representing her additional powers. Other objects that she may hold include the pasha (noose), ankusha (goad), chakra (disc), padma (lotus), trishula (trident), and shankha (conch). Sometimes she is also seen riding on a swan, the carrier of her spouse, Brahma. At other times she is seen riding on a peacock or sitting with one nearby.

The peacock represents the worldly beauty, which can distract the spiritual aspirant. The swan signifies the acquisition of wisdom and knowledge because of its ability to separate milk from water when eating, and thus acquire only the milk. Sarasvati is also the shakti or power and consort of Brahma, the secondary creator of the universe. Thus, she is also considered a mother of the universe. In this way, she is also connected with fertility.

  • Is Apple iCar or iMobile in the cards – Apple is reportedly developing an electric Car

The media and blogs were rife with speculation this weekend over the possible development of a new minivan-style electric car by Apple, taking on other industry majors like Tesla and Google in the process.

Citing unnamed sources familiar to the matter, US business daily The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Friday said that several hundred Apple employees were secretly developing an electric vehicle resembling a minivan – the project code-named “Titan.”

But a self-driving car was not part of Apple’s current plan, one of the sources told the WSJ.

Furthermore, British business daily The Financial Times (FT) reported on Saturday that Apple was recruiting automative technology and vehicle design experts to work in a top-secret research lab located a few miles from Apple’s corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Apple’s tech rival, Google GOOG 1.12% , has also taken steps to enter the auto industry, though the online search company is working to develop a driverless car. Google is also currently rumored to be working on developing a ride-hailing service that could rival Uber.

  • Taliban suicide attack in the heart of Pakistan Lahore hits police headquarters kills six

Taliban suicide attack in the heart of Pakistan Lahore hits police headquarters kills six

A suicide bomber has attacked a police building in eastern Pakistan. A splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban said it was in retaliation for recent executions.

The suicide bomber on Tuesday killed atleast six people and himself in a brazen attack on police headquarters in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore, in what militants called a revenge bid for the recent hangings of colleagues.

It was the third in a series of high-profile attacks in the last month triggered by a government decision in December to begin hanging those convicted of terror attacks, reversing an informal six-year moratorium on the death penalty.

“We claim the attack in Lahore because the government is killing our men in prison,” said Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for powerful Taliban splinter group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar. “Such attacks will go on,” promised the group’s spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan. In December, the Pakistani government lifted a moratorium on the death penalty following an attack on an army school in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

“We will get revenge for every man and our struggle will continue until sharia is instituted in the country,” he said, referring to Islamic law.

In the Pakistani incident, Punjab police chief Mushtaq Sukhera said a policeman and four civilians were among the dead. Jam Hussain, a spokesman for the emergency services, said six bodies had been recovered along with the attacker’s.

At least 23 people were injured, said Khawaja Salman Rafique, health adviser to the chief minister of Punjab.

Casualties would have been much greater if the police had not been alert and kept out the bomber, Lahore police chief Amin Wains told reporters at the attack site.

“It was a suicide blast, the bomber blew up prematurely outside the police offices,” he added. “That he could not enter the offices shows our security was successful.”

Ali Raza, the owner of a shop nearby, said the blast had been powerful enough to knock over one of his employees, and left body parts strewn in the street.

  • DOCTORS PERFORM FIRST ORGAN TRANSPLANT FROM NEW BORN IN UK

DOCTORS PERFORM FIRST ORGAN TRANSPLANT FROM NEW BORN IN UK

LONDON (TIP): Doctors in Britain have performed the first organ transplants from a new born in the UK.

In what is being called a milestone in neonatal care, a six-day-old baby girl’s kidneys and liver cells were given to two separate recipients after her heart stopped beating.

The baby girl suffered severe oxygen starvation and massive brain damage in the womb that left her completely unresponsive and unable to move when she was delivered at term by emergency caesarean.

A significant proportion of new-borns who die in neonatal units could be potential organ donors, and could therefore save the lives of other sick patients, but current guidelines make it very difficult for donors to be identified.

New guidelines from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health are expected shortly, and these should help to standardise an approach to organ donation among new-borns, the doctors said.

They go on to hope that the guidance will kick start a new way of thinking about neonatal organ donation.

“We hope that neonatal units across the UK will actively start thinking about this noble cause, which makes the grieving family’s journey easier, and has the potential to transform another life,” they conclude.

The donation involved the kidneys, which were transplanted into a patient with renal failure, and liver cells
(hepatocytes), which were transfused into a further recipient.

The donor was a girl born at term after an emergency caesarean section in the neonatal unit of Hammersmith Hospital, London.

She weighed just over three kg, but was very sick, and it became clear that her brain had been starved of oxygen for a period during the pregnancy.

Treatment made no difference, and repeated examinations showed that she was unable to make any spontaneous movement, did not respond to any stimuli, and had fixed and dilated pupils.

The parents and clinicians involved in her care discussed the possibility of organ donation, when it became clear that she would not survive.

The parents then gave their consent for their daughter’s kidneys and liver cells to be used for the benefit of other sick patients.

Six days after she was born, and with death confirmed, these tissues were retrieved with the help of an experienced surgeon from the National Organ Retrieval Service.

“It is due to the extreme generosity of the parents and wonderful professional collaboration between the neonatal team and the organ donation team that this process was successful,” write the authors.

“This case has set a milestone in the care of new-borns in the UK,” they add.

Medics said the surgery was incredibly difficult and intricate. The kidneys at this stage of life are around 5 cm long.

A PAPER CLIP SIZED IMPLANT TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE

LONDON (TIP): A revolutionary device – a paper clip sized implant which is inserted between the artery and vein in the upper thigh have been found to tremendously lower blood pressure among patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Queen Mary University of London has developed a device called Coupler which has been found to be more beneficial compared to those treated with usual drug measures.

The procedure of putting the implant lasts around 40 minutes under local anaesthetic.

Researchers led a randomised, blinded endpoint clinical trial with patients from multiple European Centres of Hypertension Excellence – including the Barts Blood Pressure Clinic at Barts Health NHS Trust in east London -all of whom had resistant high blood pressure and had not responded to at least three types of drug treatment.

The team compared the effects of the Coupler versus usual medical treatment in 83 patients of whom 44 received the ROX Coupler therapy.

Patients who received the Coupler experienced a significant and durable reduction in blood pressure.

There was also a reduced number of hypertensive complications and hospital admissions for high blood pressure crises. Dr Melvin Lobo, lead author sad “This is an entirely new and highly promising concept in high blood pressure treatment. Existing drugs focus on hormonal or neurological regulation of blood pressure, and newer treatments such as renal denervation are uniquely centred on the renal nervous system. The Coupler effectively targets the mechanical aspects of how blood circulation works – so it’s a totally new approach to controlling blood pressure. The Coupler also highlights the importance of arterial stiffness as a major cause of resistant high blood pressure and it targets this issue both safely and successfully.

GOP angry say Obama actions could let illegal immigrants get gov’t payouts

Lawmakers are warning that President Obama’s immigration executive actions could open the door for millions of illegal immigrants to qualify for hefty tax “credits” regardless of whether they’ve filed or paid taxes in the past.

All they need is a Social Security number.

Obama’s November announcement paves the way for up to 4 million illegal immigrants to obtain Social Security numbers and work permits. After some initial confusion, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen told Congress this week that this would make them eligible for what’s known as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) providing they’ve been working.

“If you get a Social Security number, you can then file for this year if you’re working, and if you earned income in the three years before that and filed, you’ll be eligible,” Koskinen told a House oversight committee hearing.

Further, he said, they would likely be able to get that credit even if they hadn’t filed for three years. According to some estimates, the tax credit combined with others could add up to billions over the next decade.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is what’s known as a refundable tax credit, intended for working people who have low to moderate incomes. The average credit varies based on their number of children, but can be worth over $6,000 per year.

For critics of Obama’s immigration plan, the potential for illegal immigrants to claim this once they’re in the program represents another problem.

“These are not tax ‘refunds’ but direct, free cash payments from the U.S. treasury to low-income illegal immigrants who owe no taxes,” Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said in a statement. “It is a dramatic cash transfer from lawful residents to unlawful residents, required by the president’s imperial amnesty.

“There can be no legal or moral justification for rewarding illegal entrants in this way. Not only is it unfair to strapped taxpayers, but it will encourage countless more to enter the U.S. illegally or to illegally overstay their visas.”

During a Senate Finance Committee hearing earlier this month, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, noted that a top IRS official determined as far back as 2000 that individuals granted what’s known as “deferred action” — which is the term for what Obama is using — would “be able to amend returns for the previous years to claim the EITC for years they worked illegally in the United States once they obtain their Social Security number.”

In other words, illegal immigrants granted de facto legal status by the Obama administration in the coming months could qualify for credits this year, and even retroactively for past years, whether they paid taxes or not.

In a letter sent last week to Treasury inspector general, Sens. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., noted that “under EITC rules, anyone eligible for the program can also ask for payments to cover the three prior years as well. This means that an illegal alien with a new Social Security Number can get a payment of more than $24,000 for years they were working illegally.”

This issue comes to light as Republicans in Congress aim to the undo Obama’s executive actions. House Republicans recently passed a Department of Homeland Security funding bill that includes a rider reversing Obama’s immigration actions. The bill is currently stuck in the Senate.

The Joint Committee on Taxation, giving a sense of what these credits are worth, recently released an estimate showing the passage of the 2015 DHS funding bill would decrease government payouts for the EITC, as well as child tax credits, by $10.2 billion over the next 10 years.

Presuming Obama’s immigration actions go forward as planned, they could be adding to an already growing taxpayer tab for illegal immigrant credits and benefits. A 2011 inspector general report found taxpayer money paid to illegal immigrants claiming the separate child tax credit had quadrupled over a five-year period to $4.2 billion in 2010.

  • Federal Judge grants injunction in Obama Amnesty Order halts plan to protect undocumented immigrants

Federal Judge grants injunction in Obama Amnesty Order halts plan to protect undocumented immigrants

Andrew Hanen, the federal judge from Southern District of Texas has granted an injunction blocking the implementation of President Obama’s administration sweeping executive action on immigration from November, which offered a form of temporary legal status and work authorization to millions of illegal immigrants.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a tweet “Breaking: Federal judge just granted my request to halt Obama’s Executive Amnesty Order Nationwide,” “More later.” – Abbott had filed suit in December on behalf of Texas and other states opposed to the presidential actions.

Colorado state Sen. Greg Brophy, a Republican, tweeted, “judge agrees with House GOP and most of America.”

Obama angered Republicans when he announced in November that he would use the executive branch to temporarily delay deportation for as many as 5 million people who came to the United States illegally.

The temporary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen cites a failure by the White House to comply with a law detailing how the federal government must establish regulations, according to legal documents and the Austin American-Statesman.

The federal government is expected to immediately ask for a stay of the injunction. That would allow the feds to resume the process of preparing to grant quasi-legal status to millions of illegal immigrants — applications for one category of the president amnesty were to open this week. For now, that can’t happen; the decision from a higher court will probably take a few weeks.

Whatever the final decision is, this ruling should a bit of ammunition for Republicans who are currently trying to force some Democrats into agreeing to a government-funding bill in Congress that blocks the implementation of the order, which many Democrats once opposed.

Josh Blackman, a University of South Texas law professor who’s written about the executive-amnesty issue for NR, has analysis of the full ruling here.

The lawsuit just challenges the executive action announced in November, which offers “deferred action” status, a form of theoretically temporary legal residency and work authorization, to illegal immigrants with specific ties to the U.S. — the parents of citizens, etc. The categories in all add up to 4 to 5 million eligible illegal aliens.

    Hindu temple vandalised in US

A Hindu temple has been vandalised with hate speech in the US state of Washington, the incident happened when unidentified miscreants sprayed swastika and painted “Get Out” on one of the walls of the temple in the Seattle Metropolitan area.

It is one of the largest Hindu temples in the entire North West.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department is investigating this case as malicious harassment.

Today the temple is celebrating Mahashivratri.

“The timing of this crime, occurring before a major Hindu festival, warrants special attention from law enforcement,” said Jay Kansara, director of Government Relations, Hindu American Foundation.

Of late there has been increasing incidents of vandalism of Hindu temples in the US including one in Loudoun County, Virginia and Monroe, Georgia last year.

As of January 1, 2015, the Department of Justice ordered all crime reporting forms to include the category anti-Hindu under the possible motives of hate crimes.

“Houses of worship are places where people should be able to be safe, at peace, and inspired to serve others,” said Padma Kuppa, HAF board member.

“Instead, the vandalism of the Hindu temple in Seattle and the arson of a mosque in Houston this past weekend incite fear and result in distrust among communities,” he said.

A Hindu temple has been vandalised with hate speech in the US state of Washington, sending shock waves through the community in the area and prompting authorities to launch an investigation.

The incident happened when unidentified miscreants sprayed swastika and painted “Get Out” on one of the walls of the temple in the Seattle Metropolitan area. It is one of the largest Hindu temples in the entire North West.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department is investigating this case as malicious harassment. Yesterday top county officials visited the temple.

“This kind of thing should not happen in the US. Who are you telling to get out? This is a nation of immigrants,” Nitya Niranjan, chairman of board of trustee of the Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre, Bothell, Washington told PTI.

Today the temple is celebrating Mahashivratri.

Niranjan said some kind of painting was sprayed on the outside wall of the temple a few years ago, but they did not bring it to the notice of the law enforcement authorities as nothing was written.

“We have no idea, who did it,” Niranjan said. While the temple has been there for nearly two decades, the construction on the second phase of the current building began recently. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) condemned the incident.

“The timing of this crime, occurring before a major Hindu festival, warrants special attention from law enforcement,” said Jay Kansara, director of Government Relations, Hindu American Foundation.

Indian-American shopkeeper shot dead in US; No indication of robbery

New York: A 28-year-old Indian-American businessman, who was gunned down by an unidentified assailant in his family-owned liquor shop in the US, has succumbed to his injuries, police said on Monday.

Amit Patel from Edison was shot and killed in New Jersey inside Roseway Liquors in Irvington on Sunday. Patel was alone in the liquor store, owned by his father, when the assailant shot at him at close range, police said.

There was no damage to the store or indication of a robbery and only one shot was fired, they said.

When police arrived at the store, they found Patel injured from a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead, acting Essex county prosecutor Carolyn A Murray and acting Irvington police director Musa Malik said in a statement.

According to close family friends, Amit’s father was in the back office when the shooting took place.

“Somebody came in, shot him… Fell down here,” family friend Rakesh Patel said. “We don’t know if it was a robbery, nobody knows. They were alone here,” Bimal Patel, another family friend, was quoted as saying by nj.Com.

“He was a nice guy. I don’t know what happened. Everybody’s nervous,” he said.

The victim got married only a year ago.

Authorities said they were looking into whether the shooting may have been the result of a robbery, but said it was too early in the investigation to be sure.

The CCTV camera footage will be examined for any leads in the case, in which no arrests have been made so far.

  • HIV Mutates again, aggressive strain of HIV in Cuba

HIV Mutates again, aggressive strain of HIV in Cuba

February 16th, 2014 (VOA) An aggressive form of HIV has been discovered in Cuba. It develops into full-blown AIDS within just three years. Researchers said the progression happens so fast that treatment with antiretroviral drugs may come too late.

Professor Anne-Mieke Vandamme said Cuban health officials first alerted her about the aggressive form of AIDS. They asked for help in finding out what was happening.

“We have a collaborative project with Cuba and the Cuban clinicians had noticed that they recently had more and more patients who were progressing much faster to AIDS than they were used to [seeing]. In this case, most of these patients had AIDS even at diagnosis already,” she said.

Vandamme is a full medical professor at the University of Leuvan in Belgium. She and her team studied more than 70 patients and divided them into various groups. One group was made up of those who developed AIDS quickly.

“So this group of patients that progressed very fast, they were all recently infected. And we know that because they had been HIV negative tested one or a maximum two years before,” she said.

She said that on average, without treatment, HIV infection takes 5 to 10 years to become full-blown AIDS. That’s determined by the scarcity of CD-4 immune cells and the number of opportunistic infections a patient has.

Usually, she said, a fast progression of HIV to AIDS is more a result of the patient’s weak immune system rather than the particular subtype of HIV involved. What’s happening in Cuba is different.

“Here we had a variant of HIV that we found only in the group that was progressing fast. Not in the other two groups. We focused in on this variant [and] tried to find out what was different. And we saw it was a recombinant of three different subtypes,” she said.

This new form of HIV is a combination of sub-types A, D and G. It’s been named CRF19.

Vandamme said, “Another thing was that they had much more virus in their blood than the other patients. So, what we call the viral load was higher in these patients. “

The patients with the aggressive form of HIV also had higher levels of a molecule called RANTES. It’s released as part of the immune response and raises the alarm about infection.

Researchers have determined why this form of HIV progresses to AIDS so quickly. Vandamme said for infection to take place, HIV has to attach itself to a cell at – what she calls – anchor points. In medical terms they’re called co-receptors.

Vandamme said, “There are two types of co-receptors that HIV can use: CCR5 or CXCR4. And in the normal progression of the HIV to AIDS it often happens that the virus switches co-receptor. It almost always starts with using CCR5 and then it switches to CXCR4 after many years. And once it switches the progression to AIDS goes very fast.”

But instead of taking many years to switch co-receptors, the new form of HIV in Cuba does it less than three years.

Vandamme says the inclusion of HIV subtype D in the new variant may be key. It contains an enzyme that enables HIV to reproduce in greater numbers – and it takes proteins from other subtypes and uses them in new virus particles.

The good news is that the aggressive form of HIV responds to most antiretroviral drugs. The bad news is people may not realize they have full-blown AIDS until it’s too late for therapy to do any good.

Vandamme said the variant has been seen before in Africa, but there were very few such patients and it does not appear to be spreading there. However, it is in wide circulation now in Cuba and now can be easily studied. So, there may be an African link, but further study is needed.

She said it’s vital for people having unprotected sex with multiple partners to be tested for HIV early and often.

  • Next stage of cease-fire – Ukraine Truce on Verge of Collapse

Next stage of cease-fire – Ukraine Truce on Verge of Collapse

Withdrawal of heavy weapons from the frontlines in Ukraine is set to begin at midnight Monday under the terms of the cease-fire, negotiated late last week in Minsk, Belarus, by the the leaders of Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia.

But a Ukrainian military spokesman said such a move would be unlikely.

“One hundred and twelve attacks are not an indicator of a cease-fire. At the moment we are not ready to withdraw heavy weapons,” Andriy Lysenko told a news briefing in Kyiv.

In another development, the European Union included two Russian deputy defense ministers on its latest Ukraine sanctions list Monday, hitting them with travel bans and asset freezes for their role in the conflict.

They are among 19 new people and nine entities the EU has sanctioned due to the Ukraine crisis.

Russia said that it would respond “appropriately” to the latest EU measures.

Ukraine and a host of Western governments accuse Moscow of stoking the rebellion in Ukraine’s Russian-speaking east with arms and fighters. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied providing direct support, and claims that Russian troops seen fighting alongside rebels are volunteers.
