  • Can sex outside marriage save your relationship?

Can sex outside marriage save your relationship?

As part of my upbringing, I grew up believing that Mahabharata had answers to all the complications related to life and relationships. Intrigued with the concept of open marriage while reading a celebrity scoop, I felt like delving deeper and naturally referred to the epic saga – Mahabharata.

Draupadi with her five husbands and an entire epic revolving around her, stirs varied imaginations. How did she handle the physical relationship with five husbands? Were the brothers not jealous of each other? Did Draupadi have a favourite among them and most importantly, how did she handle the emotional and physical dynamics associated with it ? It surely doesn’t sound simple.

Were our ancestors much more open-minded than we are or was Draupadi a victim of circumstances? An open-marriage often puts the sanctity of a husband-wife relationship under scrutiny.

When Nena O’Neill and George O’Neill first wrote about the concept of an open marriage in 1972, their focus was on honesty and openness in a marital relationship. They viewed the concept as one that preserves each partner’s freedom and right to grow as an individual in the marriage. Transparent, open communication and role definitions were seen to be essential for a healthy and open relationship. Although, this included the possibility of a sexual engagement outside marriage, the focus lay in preserving the privacy needs of each partner and on ‘meaningful commitment without destructive jealousy’.

But the concept of an open marriage, now, largely means ‘having sex outside marriage’.

Psychologist Shivani Misri Sadhoo says, “Generally, couples get into this practice to rejuvenate their sexual life as well as to avoid breakup or divorce. This type of relationship concept primarily arises when both the partners realise that they cannot be sexually satisfied by their partner and mutually agree to keep their marriage and love alive.”

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie had once openly said, “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.”

“Generally, open marriage is not a pre-involved decision where people rarely decide to have open marriage and then get married, rather it’s a resultant of a fast changing lifestyle and relationship perception across the globe, including India. Some find it difficult to accept the decline of sexual performance that their marriage may see over the period and hence they do not find their extra-marital involvement wrong or sinful. Instead of breaking their marriage, they decide to mutually accept and be transparent in extra-marital sex,” adds Sadhoo.

So, it is when couples do not want to fall out of love and marriage because of a bland sexual life that they opt for an open relationship. Over the years, we have read about such relationships prevailing in our Hindi film industry too. Since in India, marriage is a religious commitment more than a relationship, celebrities have always kept such issues under wraps so that they do not tarnish their public image.

  • BINGE EATING MAY UP VARIOUS HEALTH CONDITIONS

BINGE EATING MAY UP VARIOUS HEALTH CONDITIONS

Individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED) may be at high risk of getting diagnosed with illnesses associated with the endocrine and circulatory systems, a study suggests.

Binge-eating disorder is a serious eating disorder in which an individual frequently consumes unusually large amounts of food and is unable to stop craving for more.

Individuals with BED could be at an increased risk of 2.5-times of having an endocrine disorder and at 1.9-times of having a circulatory system disorder.

The endocrine system influences heart, bones and tissues growth, and even fertility.

It plays a vital role in determining whether there were chances of developing diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders, sexual dysfunction, and a host of other hormone-related disorders.

BED is closely associated with hypertension – commonly called high blood pressure – that causes the heart to work harder and could lead to such complications as heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure, among others.

Among individuals with obesity and BED, there is a 1.5-times increased risk of having a respiratory disease and a 2.6-times of having a gastrointestinal disease.

“We encourage clinicians to — have the conversation — about BED with their patients. Accurate screening and detection could solve BED problem with treatment,” said Professor Cynthia Bulik, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in the US.

“BED afflicts people of all shapes and sizes. The somatic illnesses that we detected were not simply effects of being overweight or obese,” Bulik clarified, in the study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

  • Paracetamol: How safe is my painkiller?

Paracetamol: How safe is my painkiller?

Paracetamol sales surge each year during seasonal flu, dengue and chikungunya outbreaks across India because it is the safest drug to treat fever and pain. Unlike aspirin and other popular NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs that treat pain and inflammation) such as ibuprofen and naproxen, it has fewer side effects and does not raise the risk of bleeding associated with dengue and other fevers of unknown origin.

What most people don’t know is that paracetamol (acetaminophen in the US and Canada) overdose, along with alcohol abuse, is among the leading causes of acute liver failure in the US, Canada, UK and Australia. And almost half of the hospitalisations and deaths associated with the painkiller are from accidental overdoses.

In India, where few people get vaccinated against liver-damaging hepatitis A and B infections, infections that spread through contaminated blood ,food and water are the biggest cause of liver damage, followed by alcohol abuse, liver cancer, haemochromatosis (a genetic condition that leads to over-absorption of iron in the liver), and drug toxicities, mostly paracetamol overdose.

    How much is too much?

Paracetamol is widely used to treat headaches and minor aches and pains from the common cold, viral and bacterial infections, toothache, sprains, strains and menstrual cramps. It is also a component of hundreds of widely used over-the-counter medicines and syrups, including cold and cough medicines. This often leads to people unwittingly taking more than the safe daily dose that is capped at 4,000 mg (eight tablets, 500 mg each) a day. Selling the drug in smaller quantities in blister packs, as in the UK and India, helps prevent overdose –intentional and accidental – by making it difficult for a person in pain to pop a handful unintentionally.

Toxicity occurs when the drug builds up in the bloodstream faster than it can be cleared by the body. In most people, small amounts of paracetamol is broken down into non-toxic forms and secreted in the urine, but more than the maximum amount can cause the built-up byproducts to disrupt liver function.

    Drug toxicity

Though physicians are supposed to voluntarily report adverse drug reactions to the directorate general of health services in India, it is rarely done. Canada, with a population of 35 million reported 4,500 hospitalisations due to paracetamol overdose, of which 16% are accidental, shows Health Canada data, which is asking for stricter labelling. The northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with a population of more than 200 million, has reported none.

    Am I at risk?

There’s a very clear threshold for what constitutes a safe dose, which has led to regulatory bodies across the world, including in India, to recommend adults have no more than 4,000 mg a day. People with compromised livers – it could be because of three or more alcoholic (30 ml) drinks for men and two for women every day, or have undiagnosed liver infection or damage –should have it in doses lower than the recommended limit. In children, taking slightly more than the therapeutic dose over long periods can also cause toxicity.

The symptoms of toxicity depend on how much paracetamol is there in your blood. More than 50% of people with underlying liver disease have no symptoms, with signs of liver damage often showing up in late-stage liver disease. It usually begins with vomiting, stomach ache and progresses to jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin due to high levels of bilirubin, a yellow pigment found in bile that is when the liver breaks down old red blood cells), dark urine, pale or light coloured stool, mental confusion, and retention of fluids in the abdomen or belly.

  • Patanjali’s Balkrishna enters Forbes rich list with $2.5 bn

Patanjali’s Balkrishna enters Forbes rich list with $2.5 bn

SINGAPORE (TIP): Yoga guru Ramdev’s close associate Acharya Balkrishna has entered the annual Forbes list of India’s 100 Richest People at the 48th position with a net worth of$2.5 billion, owing to his 97 per cent holding in Patanjali Ayurved. However, new-age retailer Flipkart’s co-founders Sachin and Binny Bansal made a surprise exit from the list.

The Forbes list on Sept 22 (Thursday) named industrialist Mukesh Ambani as India’s richest person for the ninth year in a row with a sharp increase in his net worth to $22.7 billion, while Sun Pharma’s Dilip Shanghvi was ranked a distant second with a wealth of $16.9 billion. Mukesh’s younger brother Anil Ambani was ranked 32nd with a net worth of $3.4 billion, down from 29th spot last year.

This year, the minimum amount required to make to the Forbes list was$1.25 billion, up from $1.1 billion in 2015. Forbes said the list was compiled using shareholding and financial information obtained from the families and individuals, stock exchanges, analysts and regulators. Forbes said the combined net worth of India’s 100 wealthiest is $381 billion (nearly Rs 25.5 lakh crore), a rise of 10% from $345 billion in 2015.

Balkrishna is among the six newcomers on the list, while 13 persons have failed to make the cut this year. Flipkart’s Bansals were ranked 86th last year with a net worth of $1.3 billion. Mukesh Ambani’s wealth rose in the past one year from $18.9 billion to$22.7 billion (over Rs 1.5 lakh crore) on 21% surge in share price of Reliance Industries, the flagship company of his group, which recently launched 4G mobile services with much fanfare. He was ranked 36th in the global rich list.

Shanghvi retained his second position, though his wealth fell by $1.1 billion due to plunge in share price of his group firm Sun Pharma, the world’s fifth largest generic drug maker, Forbes said. The Hinduja brothers rose to the third spot by displacing Premji and saw their worth rising to $15.2 billion, from$14.8 a year ago.

“The four siblings -Srichand, Gopichand, Prakash, and Ashok -control multinational empire Hinduja Group, with businesses ranging from trucks and lubricants to banking and cable television. The group commissioned its much-delayed 1,040-MW thermal power unit in south India in July ,” the magazine said.

  • Apple partners with Flipkart to sell iPhone 7

Apple partners with Flipkart to sell iPhone 7

BENGALURU (TIP): Apple has partnered with Flipkart to sell its iPhone 7 on the Bengaluru-based etailer’s platform from October 7. Flipkart will source iPhone 7 directly from Apple, unlike previous years when it would source the phones from third-party sellers.

This is the first time that Apple has partnered with a consumer-facing online player to sell a new iPhone version. Infibeam, which has been an Apple partner for some years, will also receive the new iPhones directly, but it is known more as a bulk seller, one that does not deal with consumers directly.

The development was first reported by online portal BGR.in. When contacted, Flipkart declined to comment on the matter while an e-mail sent to the Apple India spokesperson did not elicit any response.

Flipkart, which has the largest etail market share in India, generates a major chunk of its revenues from sales of smartphones. Multiple smartphone brands, including Motorola and LeEco, sell exclusively on Flipkart. TOI reported on September 22 that Flipkart sold 1 lakh units of Motorola’s latest E3 range in 24 hours on Tuesday.

The iPhone 7 deal should give Flipkart a leg up, at a time when it is facing stiff competition from American rival Amazon which has been investing heavily in the Indian market. The tie-up may help provide fresh excitement during the festival season sales.Amazon too may offer iPhone 7s on its platform, but the absence of a direct deal with Apple will mean the margins it gets will be lower, and it will probably have less flexibility in managing the supply chain.

  • WTO APPELLATE BODY’S RULES AGAINST INDIA IN SOLAR CASE WITH US

WTO APPELLATE BODY’S RULES AGAINST INDIA IN SOLAR CASE WITH US

GENEVA (TIP): India lost its appeal at the World Trade Organization in a dispute over solar power on Friday, failing to overturn a US complaint+ that New Delhi had discriminated against importers in the Indian solar power sector.

The WTO’s appeals judges upheld an earlier ruling that found India had broken WTO rules by requiring solar power developers to use Indian-made cells and modules. The appeal ruling is final and India will be expected to bring its laws into compliance with the WTO rules. “This report is a clear victory for American solar manufacturers and workers, and another step forward in the fight against climate change,” US trade representative Michael Froman said in a statement.

Indian officials made no immediate comment on the appeal outcome.

US solar exports to India have fallen by more than 90 percent since India brought in the rules, the statement said.

As in the earlier ruling, which was issued in February this year, the judges said India could not claim exemptions on the basis that its national solar power sector was included in government procurement, nor on the basis that solar goods were in short supply.

There was also no justification on the grounds of ensuring ecologically sustainable growth or combating climate change. The dispute, which the United States first launched in February 2013, involved an increasingly common target of trade disputes – solar power, with an increasingly common complaint – local content requirements.

The appeal ruling came just days after India launched a WTO complaint against subsidies for the solar industry in eight US states.Under WTO rules, countries are not allowed to discriminate against imports and favour local producers, but in the past five years countries keen to support their own manufacturers have frequently resorted to local content requirements, while keeping a sharp eye out for their use by others.

“We strongly support the rapid deployment of solar energy worldwide, including in India,” Froman said.

“But local content requirements are not only contrary to WTO rules, but actually undermine our efforts to promote clean energy by requiring the use of more expensive and less efficient equipment, making it more difficult for clean energy sources to be cost- competitive.”

  • RELIANCE JIO EFFECT: VODAFONE GETS RS 47,700CR FROM ITS UK PARENT

RELIANCE JIO EFFECT: VODAFONE GETS RS 47,700CR FROM ITS UK PARENT

MUMBAI (TIP): In the largest foreign direct investment in the country since Narendra Modi-led BJP came to power in 2014, Vodafone Plc, Europe’s biggest mobile service provider, has infused Rs 47,700 crore ($7.5 billion) in its Indian arm, empowering the company with more ammunition to defend its turf in the world’s second largest telecommunications market where competition has intensified with the entry of Reliance Jio.

Vodafone India, the No.2 player with 200 million subscribers behind Bharti Airtel, will be using the funds to ramp up its network and participate in the upcoming radio airwaves auction. The announcement came eight days ahead of the launch of the biggest-ever spectrum auction and 17 days after the launch of Reliance Jio, which is emerging to be the biggest rival for the incumbent mobile service providers.

“This equity infusion will be used for right-sizing our spectrum portfolio, expansion of network and deployment of next-generation 4G and 5G technologies,” said Sunil Sood, MD & CEO, Vodafone India.

Reliance Jio, controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has stormed the market with free calls and rock-bottom data tariffs, pressuring incumbent telecom operators to rethink their strategies to protect their market share. Vodafone India is expected to be the most aggressive bidder at the ensuing spectrum auction with analysts predicting it to spend as much as Rs 16,300 crore for buying airwaves.

  • BSNL PLANS FREE VOICE, CHEAPER PACKAGE THAN RELIANCE JIO

BSNL PLANS FREE VOICE, CHEAPER PACKAGE THAN RELIANCE JIO

NEW DELHI (TIP): State-run BSNL will be the first to cut tariffs to better Reliance Jio ‘s offer, a top official said on Wednesday, setting the stage for a price war in the country’s crowded mobile telecom market.

The public sector player is planning to follow Jio in offering free voice calling on its network, and at plans that will be cheaper than the new entrant’s. And unlike Jio’s offer that is available for only 4G subscribers, the BSNL plan will be open to 2G and 3G users, which constitute the majority of mobile customers.

“We are closely observing the market as well as Jio’s performance. We will also come up with lifetime free-voice plans from the new year as part of fresh offerings,” BSNL chairman and managing director Anupam Shrivastava told TOI. “We plan to be even lower than the Jio plan, and this could be by Rs 2-4.”

BSNL, that has a strong market penetration and significant share in many key markets such as Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Punjab and UP, will announce the zero-voice-tariff plans from January and these would be lower than the Rs 149 entry price of Jio. The loss-making PSU is, however, absent in key markets such as Mumbai and Delhi (serviced by MTNL).

Shrivastava said that the plan will be offered to BSNL’s mobile customers who also have a broadband connection at home. “The idea is to use the home broadband to route outgoing mobile calls through the landline network. We estimate that a large amount of time is spent at home, and so here we can ride on our wire-line operations,” he said.

However, the free-voice facility will also be available when a subscriber would use it outside the residence.

BSNL’s offer may put further pressure on operators such as Airtel , Vodafone and Idea to slash tariffs, said experts. Prashant Singhal, partner at Ernst & Young, said the BSNL offer will impact other telecom companies. “Others will also have to follow suit. But this can be a risk for BSNL and its ARPU can be hit.”

He said that “the Prime Minister and Secretary Kerry expressed strong concern with recent violence in Kashmir – particularly the army base attack – and the need for all sides to reduce tensions.”

Kerry also “stressed the need for restraint in nuclear weapons programs,” Kirby said.

Their discussions centered on the “strong, long-term bilateral partnership” and how “to build upon the US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue,” Kirby said. Afghanistan also figured in their talks.

Kerry made the remark about Pakistan stopping safe havens for terrorists “while commending recent efforts by Pakistani security forces to counter extremist violence,” Kirby said.

Pakistani media reported that during the meeting Sharif had asked for U.S. help to resolve India-Pakistan issues.

“I expect the U.S. administration and Secretary Kerry to use his good offices to help resolve issues between Pakistan and India,” Dawn quoted Sharif as saying. “I still remember President Bill Clinton’s promise that the U.S. will play its role to help out in resolving bilateral disputes and issues between Pakistan and India,” he said.

Pakistan shows the door to Indian Media during Briefing in New York

NEW YORK – Indian media were not allowed to attend a Sept. 19 press briefing addressed by Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry in New York, and an Indian journalist of NDTV news channel was asked to leave the room, in an apparent outcome of simmering bilateral relations.

“Iss Indian ko nikalo (remove this Indian),” were the words directed at Namrata Brar, a journalist with NDTV, and she was asked to leave the room at the Roosevelt Hotel, where the Pakistan Foreign Secretary was to address the media on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, NDTV reported.

No Indian was allowed to attend the briefing, the news channel reported.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also avoided Indian journalists during his trip to New York to attend the UN meet.

Bilateral tensions between the two countries has escalated over the Kashmir issue, especially with Pakistan seen to openly back the separatist-fueled unrest in the valley and raising the issue of alleged human rights violations at the international forum.

The incident also comes after the Sept. 18 terror attack on the Uri army base camp in Jammu and Kashmir which claimed the lives of 18 soldiers.

Kripan-Carrying Sikh Mistaken For Muslim With Sword, Alarm In Pennsylvania Mall

New York:  In a case of alleged racial profiling in the US, police surrounded a Sikh man carrying a kirpan after getting calls about an apparent Muslim walking around a shopping centre with a ‘large knife’ or ‘sword’.

Harpreet Singh Khalsa, 33, said he was the victim of racial profiling in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, but police stated that those who called in their concerns did the right thing.

Police in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, received multiple calls about an apparent ‘Muslim man’ walking around the Bethlehem Square Shopping Center with a “large knife” or “sword”.

Multiple officers responded to find Mr Khalsa sitting inside a van parked in the fire lane.

“The cops surrounded me and told me to put my hands on my head,” Mr Khalsa was quoted as saying by WFMZ-TV.

Mr Khalsa, visiting from Maryland, was not carrying a large knife or sword. He was wearing a kirpan — one of the five articles of the Sikh faith.

Mr Khalsa said he was scared having so many officers around him.

“Embarrassed, humiliated, ashamed, for even bothering to come to Bethlehem,” Mr Khalsa said.

Given recent attacks in New York and Minnesota, officers said people are on higher alert.

“People are a little sensitive to things that are unusual,” said Captain Greg Gottschall, Bethlehem Township Police Department.

“They did the right thing. They called for us to come and check it out,” he was quoted as saying.

However, Mr Khalsa said he was racially profiled and misunderstood.

“To have a caller in the first place is pointing to racism, clearly racism,” Mr Khalsa said, adding that it was “fear-driven racism”.

Mr Khalsa was not charged, and his kirpan was returned to him. But the Sikh man said he does not plan to come back to the Lehigh Valley and called the way he was treated “un-American”.

10 Militants, One Soldier Killed in Fresh Infiltration Attempt in #Kashmir

URI, Jammu and Kashmir – At least 10 militants and a soldier were killed Sept. 20 as the army claimed to have foiled two major infiltration bids from Pakistan near the Line of Control, two days after a massive terror strike killed 18 army men in this garrison town of Uri in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The infiltration attempts came as India and Pakistan are locked in a diplomatic war of words over a deadly unrest in the Kashmir Valley and soon after the Sunday attack on military base close to the de facto border that divides the state between the two neighbors.

Defense sources said the infiltration attempt was made under the cover of Pakistani firing as a group of 15 heavily armed militants attempted to cross over to this side of the LoC near Uri, 100 km north of Srinagar.

The operation near the Lachipora border area of the garrison town was on and by late Tuesday night, the army said, it had killed 10 militants.

The area is barely six km from the army camp that was hit by four suicide attackers on Sept. 18 morning.

An army source told IANS here that soldiers became apprehensive about a possible infiltration bid after Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing using small and automatic arms to target Indian posts in Lachhipora and Boniyar villages of the border on Tuesday afternoon.

The source said the Pakistani fire caused no damage.

“It became clear that a cover was being provided to infiltrators from Pakistan. Indian soldiers returned the fire and kept vigil around to monitor any cross-border movement. A group of armed infiltrators was immediately spotted,” the source said.

Another incursion attempt was foiled in the Nowgam sector near the LoC in Kupwara, also 100 km north of Srinagar, a police source said.

“The group of heavily armed militants fired at soldiers, triggering an encounter in which one army soldier was critically injured,” the source said.

The soldier succumbed to his injuries at a hospital later.

The operation was still on as five to six militants were believed to have been engaged in the heavy exchange of fire.

Pakistan is often accused of firing at Indian posts to provide cover to militants trying to sneak into this side of the LoC.

The firing in Uri violates the 2003 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan along the international boundary and the LoC.

Earlier, the army foiled two such attempts on Sept. 11 and 16 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Uri sectors respectively. Four terrorists were killed in each of the operations.

The latest infiltration bids come as India blamed Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed militants for the Uri terror attack. Pakistan has denied the allegations even as India claimed to have clinching evidence to support its claim.

The Indian Army has said it has recovered arms, ammunition and food and medicine packets with Pakistani markings during the combing operations at the military base in Uri.

According to the Indian Army, infiltration attempts from across the border with Pakistan have increased this year in comparison with the past three to four years.

In 2016 so far, the Indian Army has foiled 19 infiltration bids from across the border. The army said it was a “desperate attempt” by Pakistan to create “disturbance and foment unrest” in India.

  • Bill To Designate Pakistan As A Terrorist State Moved In US

Bill To Designate Pakistan As A Terrorist State Moved In US

In a humiliating setback to Islamabad ahead of PM Nawaz Sharif’s speech before the UN General Assembly, two American lawmakers have introduced legislation in the US Congress to designate Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism.

The bill was moved by Congressman Ted Poe, a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Texas, jointly with Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican from California who heads the House’s sub-committee on Europe, Eurasia and emerging threats.

If enacted, the Bill will require the President to give a report to Congress within 90 days on whether Pakistan had supported international terrorism, or not. Within 30 days thereafter, the secretary of state will either determine Pakistan is a state sponsor of terrorism, or say why not.

This is not the first time that there is talk of formally designating Pakistan a terrorist state. Such a measure was earlier discussed in 1993 after Pakistan engineered the Mumbai serial blasts. But, Islamabad escaped punishment by pretending to be an ally in the war on terror.

Jenifer Rajkumar, a Democrat running in the state’s 65th Assembly District, candidate for the New York State Assembly, has lost the race in the Democratic primaries held on September 13.

Rajkumar second in a six-candidate Democratic race.

She was against an array of strong candidates to fill the seat vacated by the powerful NY State Assembly Speaker, Sheldon Silver. Rajkumar, a longtime resident of the area and a Democratic District Leader for three terms, managed to split some of the voting blocks, to garner a second place finish.

“I am enormously proud of the campaign we ran, and very grateful for the outpouring of support I received from our Desi community everywhere,” Rajkumar told the media. “This was a tough race in a tough district.”

The winner, Yuh-Line Niou won 2,742 votes, 31.55 percent, and Rajkumar came in 2nd with 1,612 or 18.55 percent of the vote. Ranged behind her were Paul Newell with 1,381 (15.89 percent); Alive Cancel, 1,069 (12.30 percent; Don Lee, 984 votes (11.32 percent); and Gigi Li, 827 votes, 9.51 percent.

This heavily Democratic downtown Manhattan district made up of diverse ethnic communities and a mix of upper and lower income populations, assures a winner of the primary a seat in the state Assembly almost automatically. But just 8,692 Democrats cast votes in a district where registered Democrats number 43,094.

“With all of New York’s powerbrokers supporting other candidates, I still came in a very respectable second place in a six candidate field thanks to votes from throughout Lower Manhattan’s diverse neighborhoods,” Rajkumar said.

Navtej Sarna Appointed New Indian Ambassador To United States

New Delhi: India’s High Commissioner to Britain Navtej Sarna was today appointed as the next Ambassador to the US as that country prepares for a presidential transition.

“Navtej Singh Sarna (IFS: 1980) has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United State of America,” an External Affairs Ministry statement said.

“He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” it added.

He takes charge after Arun Kumar Singh retired at the end of last month. Both Mr Sarna and Mr Singh are former Indian ambassadors to Israel, underlying the importance of a posting in Tel Aviv which is one of Washington’s closest allies.

Mr Sarna was moved to London as the High Commissioner around eight months ago.

Before moving to London, Mr Sarna was Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs where he oversaw the successful hosting of the India-Africa Forum Summit last October. The summit was attended by a record number of 53 African countries.

Mr Sarna was among the longest-serving spokespersons of the ministry between 2002 and 2008. He has also had postings in Moscow, Warsaw, Tehran, Geneva and Thimphu.

Mr Sarna is also a prolific author of many fiction and non-fiction books, the most recent being ‘Second Thoughts: On Books, Authors and the Writerly Life’ that was released last year. He was a big hit in London’s literary circles and had also become, in a short span, a popular figure in the Indian community in the Britain.
