Vijay Mallya can seek Emergency Certificate to return to India: MEA

NEW DELHI (TIP): Dismissing beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya’s claim that he is unable to travel back as his passport has been suspended+ by the Indian authorities, the government on Thursday (Sept 15) said any citizen can approach the nearest Indian Embassy or high commission and apply for an Emergency Certificate to return to the country.

Underlining that the Emergency Certificate is specifically meant to provide a travel document to an Indian citizen to return to India, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said this facility is available to Mallya, should he wish to apply for it. “Our position is very clear. Any Indian citizen who is outside India and who does not have a valid travel document for any reason, only has to approach the nearest Indian Embassy or High Commission and apply for an Emergency Certificate,” Swarup said when asked about Mallya telling a Delhi court that he wants to come to India but is unable to travel back as his passport has been suspended.

Mallya, who is at present in London, made the submission through his counsel before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in a case lodged for allegedly evading summons in connection with a FERA violation matter. On July 9, the court had cancelled the exemption from personal appearance granted to him and had directed him to appear before it.

Bali tourist boat blast kills two foreigners, injures 18

DENPASAR, INDONESIA (TIP): An explosion on a speedboat in Bali left two foreigners dead and 18 other tourists injured on September 15, sparking dramatic scenes as rescuers rushed to haul stunned and bloodied holidaymakers off the vessel.

Dazed passengers, many covered in cuts and bruises, were taken to medical centres on the Indonesian holiday island after the blast, with TV footage showing them being carried on stretchers to ambulances and lying in hospital beds.

An Austrian woman was killed along with a second female foreigner, whose nationality was still being verified. Nationals from Briton, France, Italy, Portugal, Ireland and Spain were also on the boat at the time of the blast.

It appeared to be an accident with the explosion occurring in the fuel tank. The bomb squad was initially deployed to the scene on an island that has suffered bloody Islamist militant attacks in the past, but authorities quickly ruled out an attack.

Indonesia has a poor maritime safety record and regularly suffers fatal boat accidents but serious incidents around Bali, which attracts millions of foreign visitors each year — are rare.

The speedboat, which was carrying some 30 foreign tourists and four crew, had just left Padang Bai port in eastern Bali on Thursday morning when the blast occurred.

“The explosion happened five minutes after the boat departed,” local police chief Sugeng Sudarso told AFP, adding the vessel had been about 200 metres (yards) from the port.

One woman died from head injuries soon after the blast while the Austrian woman died later in hospital, he said.

Sudarso said he believed a malfunctioning battery near the fuel tank may have caused the accident.

CAUVERY DISPUTE: STALIN, VAIKO, KANIMOZHI ARRESTED AS TN WITNESSES BANDH

CHENNAI (TIP): Senior DMK leader MK Stalin was taken into preventive custody on Friday after staging a rail roko at the Egmore Railway station in Chennai. Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi also courted arrest as the entire state witnessed a shutdown over the ongoing Cauvery water-sharing dispute and the violence against Tamils living in Karnataka.

The bandh, which will last from dawn to dusk, was called by all political parties and their affiliated trade organisations, barring the ruling AIADMK and its allies.

More than 12,000 policemen have been deployed across Chennai to maintain order. Police stated that no attempt to disrupt public peace or prevent the free movement of transportation would be tolerated.

The senior DMK leaders, who launched their protest rallies in Egmore station and on Anna Salai, are currently courting arrest.

MDMK leader Vaiko and his party cadre were arrested earlier in Tiruchy after attempting to stage a rail roko.

The Supreme Court on Thursday slammed both the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for failing to prevent violence over its order, and stated that its verdict had to be complied with. But the dispute has seen large-scale violence across Karnataka – especially in Bengaluru – where rampaging mobs have torched vehicles and damages property worth crores.

  • INDIAN AMERICAN ROYAL OAK DOCTOR CHARGED WITH THREATENING PROSECUTOR

INDIAN AMERICAN ROYAL OAK DOCTOR CHARGED WITH THREATENING PROSECUTOR

ROYAL OAK, MICHIGAN (TIP): A family physician who operates a medical marijuana clinic in Oakland County. Michigan, has been jailed on charges that he made Internet (Facebook) threats to kill Oakland County prosecutor Jessica Cooper, two assistant prosecuting attorneys and others.

Dr. Kumar A. Singh of Royal Oak was arrested last Sunday, September 11, after two of his targeted victims made police reports after learning of the threats allegedly made by Singh on Facebook on Sept. 10. He was arraigned on 22 charges Wednesday, September 14, and is being held in the Oakland County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond.

Singh, 47, allegedly made various threats to kill with an assault rifle several individuals including prosecutors, judges, attorneys, bailiffs and others as a result of what he perceives to be mistreatment in a criminal case from 2013-14 in Oakland County.

He claimed the case “severely tarnished his reputation,” according to John Potbury, a spokesman of the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office, which will be handling the case because Cooper has recused herself.

“He was apparently a witness in a criminal case a few years ago,” Potbury said. “He was cross-examined by an assistant prosecutor. That assistant prosecutor didn’t have any subsequent conversations that he can recall.

A search warrant was issued and evidence found that indicates he had the ability to carry out the threats.”

Potbury did not elaborate on what was found in Singh’s residence other than weapons.

Cooper’s chief deputy, Paul Walton, said several of those who allegedly received Facebook threats, texts or telephone calls from Singh had contacted local police agencies with concerns.

“We don’t know a lot about him (Singh) other than he was cross-examined during a medical marijuana case trial a few years and there wasn’t anything unusual about that,” Walton said. “If there had been, you would assume someone would have filed with the attorney grievance commission or written a letter … nothing. Until a few days ago.”

Singh was represented in court Wednesday by Matthew Abel of Cannabis Counsel, a group which specializes in marijuana cases in Michigan.

“It’s a strange case but he claims he is innocent of the charges – that he didn’t threaten anyone,” Abel said. “I haven’t had the opportunity to talk to him much about the case but I expect we will be meeting.”

Abel said Singh was subpoenaed to testify in a medical marijuana case “a few years back” and it was his understanding that Singh felt questioning of him by the prosecution went too far.

The charges include offenses in the threat of terrorism, including use of the internet to make the threats, use of a computer to make threats and use of a computer to commit a crime. All of the computer crimes are punishable by 20 years in prison. He was also charged with four counts of ethnic intimidation, a felony with a two-year prison penalty.

Royal Oak police staked out Singh’s apartment in Royal Oak and arrested him without incident Sunday, according to Potbury.

In 2009, Singh established the Greenlite Clinic, a state licensed medical office and walk-in clinic on Maple in Troy that prescribes medical marijuana certifications to qualified patients.

  • Indian-American physician Abraham Verghese to receive National Humanities Medal

Indian-American physician Abraham Verghese to receive National Humanities Medal

WASHINGTON (TIP): Indian-American physician-author Abraham Verghese, whose work has emphasized empathy in medicine, has been selected for the prestigious 2015 National Humanities Medal, the White House has announced.

US President Barack Obama would confer the honor upon Verghese, along with 11 others, and the recipients of 2015 National Medal of Arts at a ceremony on 21 September.

Currently a professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine, 61-year-old Verghese has authored several acclaimed books, including My Own Country and Cutting for Stone.

In a statement, the White House on Wednesday said Verghese has been given the award for reminding “us” that the patient is the center of the medical enterprise.

“His range of proficiency embodies the diversity of the humanities, from his efforts to emphasize empathy in medicine, to his imaginative renderings of the human drama,” the White House said.

“Abraham Verghese is not only an exemplary clinician, he is an exemplary humanist,” said Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne.

“Every day in the classroom, he teaches his students that professions such as medicine benefit from an understanding of the human condition.

“We are so proud that his breadth of scholarship has been recognized with this honor,” Tessier-Lavigne said.

Inaugurated in 1997, the National Humanities Medal honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the human experience, broadened citizens’ engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy, and other humanities subjects, according to the National Endowment for the Humanities website.

Up to 12 medals are awarded each year.

“I am humbled and excited by this honor,” Verghese said in a statement issued by the Stanford University. He completed his education at the Madras Medical College.

“The names of previous recipients include writers I most admire. It is a wonderful affirmation of a path that in the early years I wasn’t sure was the right path, even though it was one I felt compelled to follow,” Verghese, who is also the Linda R Meier and Joan F Lane Provostial Professor, said.

Verghese is known for his emphasis on empathy for patients in an era in which technology often overwhelms the human side of medicine, the university said in a statement.

“I felt strongly then and now that what I was writing about, and my interest in the human experience of being ill or caring for the ill, was as much a part of medicine as knowledge of the function of the pancreas, for example,” said Verghese, who is also a Vice Chair of Stanford’s Department of Medicine.

In this accessible and engaging book, Sadhguru presents a philosophical and practical introduction to the power and profundity of yoga – as he puts it, “not as acrobatics or metaphysics, but as an empirical science that makes you the master of your own destiny, the architect of your own inner bliss.

In short, this book is a road-map to joy — an invitation to each one of you to turn from an armchair reader into a dynamic participant on an ecstatic journey inward.”

INNER ENGINEERING presents a new way of thinking about our agency and our humanity and the opportunity to achieve nothing less than a life of joy.

“By any measure, Sadhguru is a remarkable man. For countless people around the world, he is a luminous spiritual guide. He is too a pragmatic social activist and compassionate campaigner for human rights, for universal education and for global peace and wellbeing. In this signature book, he sets out the personal experiences and deep insights that have transformed his own life and consciousness. More than that, he offers a practiced program for personal transformation that also draws from the venerable teachings of the yogic masters who continue to inspire him. Throughout the ages there have been no more insistent questions than who we are and what our purpose is in living at all. Contrarian and consistent, ancient and contemporary,

Inner Engineering is a loving invitation to live our best lives and a profound reassurance of why and how we can.” -Sir Ken Robinson

“Inner Engineering is a fascinating read of Sadhguru’ s insights and his teaching. If you are ready, it is a tool to help awaken your own inner intelligence, the ultimate and supreme genius that mirrors the wisdom of the cosmos.” – Deepak Chopra

He is a sought-after speaker who has addressed leading international forums, including the World Peace Summit at the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, TED, and numerous universities.

Sadhguru belongs to no particular tradition and incorporates aspects of yogic sciences that are most relevant for modern-day life into his teachings and practices. His scientific methods for self-transformation have universal appeal. His life and work serve as reminders that the inner science of yoga is absolutely relevant and applicable to our lives today.

In 1992, Sadhguru established the Isha Foundation, an international, volunteer-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing all aspects of human well-being. It is headquartered in the United States at the Isha Institute of Inner Sciences in Tennessee and in India at the Isha Yoga Center at the base of the Velliangiri Mountains, near Coimbatore. Supported by over three million volunteers worldwide, the Foundation’s activities range from large-scale humanitarian projects in the fields of public health, ecology, and education to yoga programs for the individual. The objective of all the Foundation’s activities is to empower the individual to realize the ultimate potential within, and to promote a global climate of inclusiveness and harmony.

  • A Party in a Hurry – Aam Aadmi Party

A Party in a Hurry – Aam Aadmi Party

Political scientists write with some regret of how a political movement that had tapped the consciousness of lakhs of Indians through sustained and patient mobilization, dissemination of ideology, and shared understanding of what is wrong with our society and what can be done about it atrophied and folded up when it began to rule. The empirical referent is, of course, the Indian National Congress. In the 1970s, the once charismatic and sage leadership of the Congress reduced itself into a bunch of courtiers paying ritualized homage to the leader. In the second decade of the 21st century, India witnessed a contrary phenomenon. A civil society movement against corruption mutated into a political party, and in two consecutive years formed a government in Delhi. The victory of the party showed a mirror to established political parties that increasingly rely on the supposed charisma of one man or woman to win elections.aam-aadmi-party

    Meteoric rise and meltdown

The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) strategies of connecting with citizens, particularly in the slums of Delhi, put into practice the wisdom of democratic theory: that the task of a party is to arouse political awareness by means other than the dishonorable politics of identity, evoke critical evaluations of power and its misuse, and enable the articulation of everyday needs and aspirations. This sagacity was confirmed the moment the AAP won power in the 2013 and 2014 Assembly elections.

Even within the limited power that Delhi, not quite a Union Territory but not wholly a State, has been granted, the hope was that the AAP, backed by a massive majority, would perform. The party, however, failed to shrug off the techniques that had brought it fame in its civil society avatar, the politics of accusation, ‘naming and shaming’, and blame, and become a party that concentrates on democratic governance. Arvind Kejriwal’s government has not been allowed to perform, Ministers have been harassed by the police, the Lieutenant Governor has performed a role normally reserved for a Viceroy, and the Opposition, reduced to a pathetic rump in the 2014 elections, has sponsored a number of sting operations and complaints against Ministers.

But all is not well in the quintessential anti-establishment party. For one, the AAP has failed to priorities a clearly enunciated and well-thought-out belief system that all members can subscribe to, and that distinguishes the party from others. Two, it has developed a leadership cult, and such cults hardly tolerate dissent. Three, this has occurred because the party has failed to establish mechanisms for reconciling difference of opinion among members.

The AAP should learn from history, for example from the Congress system in the 1950s and early 1960s. Intricate networks to resolve conflict between political interests represented in the Congress ensured that no one interest gained or lost too much. Because the AAP has not established such procedures, we witness the ignominious spectacle of leaders exiting the party in a huff and blasting the dictatorial tendencies of Mr. Kejriwal.

    Delhi rerun in Punjab?

The same political spectacle is now being re-enacted in Punjab in the run-up to the 2017 State elections. Earlier this year, the AAP effectively challenged the monopoly on political power exercised by the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) alliance on the one hand, and the Congress on the other. Mr. Kejriwal appeared on to the political horizons of Punjab as a swashbuckling Roman gladiator, and metaphorically girded his loins to cure the twin malaise of misgovernance and deprivation in the State. Reeling under two terms of the SAD-BJP alliance, the people of Punjab breathed, or so initial surveys held, a sigh of relief. At last someone who does not carry the historical burdens of Punjab on his shoulders has come to rescue people from non-performing Punjabi politicians.

Hundreds of volunteers flocked to the party and enabled the leaders to establish contact with the debt-ridden peasantry, and hold dialogues with vulnerable sections to identify the components of the Punjab crisis: serious agrarian distress that has led to farmer suicides, the drug menace, the ominous influence of the liquor and the sand mafias, the lack of access to health and education, acute unemployment, and above all, the completely amoral corruption of those who have ruled and continue to rule Punjab.

The contact program of the AAP should have made it aware of the scale of the calamities that have hit Punjab since the 1980s. But it is precisely here that the party falters and shows neither initiative nor imagination. Unveiling the AAP’s ‘Farmers and Farm Laborers Manifesto’ on September 11 at Baghapurana village near Moga, Mr. Kejriwal upped his allegations against Ministers belonging to SAD and Congress leaders and promised them jail if voted into power.

Certainly corruption is a critical issue that stalks high economics and politics as well as everyday life in India. The issue, however, hardly forms the stuff of which an inspired and visionary party manifesto is authored and drafted. Destruction of corruption through administrative means should be an essential precondition for democracy. In India, the ignoble phenomenon has become a surrogate for democracy; an alibi for authoritarian proclivities. In the process, politics has been reduced to management. And a politically imaginative and innovative vision of how complex problems can be resolved has been diminished to populism.

    Populist politics

It is precisely in these spheres that the AAP has been unable to transcend its origins as an anti-corruption movement. Mr. Kejriwal heaps abuse on politicians deemed to be corrupt and threatens them with imprisonment. What are his solutions to the other problems of the State? Re-enacting the well-worn script of political agendas in Punjab, he promised the status of a holy city to Amritsar and Anandpur Sahib, easing of debts, waiver of bank loans to poor farmers, laborers, Scheduled Castes and Backward Castes, a halt on action by banks against defaulters till the end of 2018, compensation for crop loss, raising of minimum support prices, free electricity, and money grants to farmers on the occasion of the birth/marriage of their daughters.

As far as populist politics goes, the program rivals the agenda of the two Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. But unlike Punjab, Tamil Nadu ranks high on all indicators of social development: it was one of the earliest States to universalize the Public Distribution System, and has brought down poverty over the years. Tamil Nadu spends the highest proportion of the State domestic product, about 10.2 per cent, on literacy. The lesson is that doles are no substitute for social policy and debt is not a cause of the crisis; it is merely an indicator of the magnitude of the problem. The AAP seems to have misread the situation in Punjab.

Above all, the party is imploding under the weight of too many ticket-seekers. It has taken care to hunt for and recruit candidates of integrity. But the number of people deserting the party outweighs hopeful candidates. Ironically, Punjab, for long a two-party State, today witnesses a proliferation of minor parties formed by deserters from the AAP bandwagon. There is danger that the latest political kid on the block will find itself unable to resolve the same problems it accuses other parties of being incapable of solving. If it fails to learn from the Punjab and the Delhi experience, the AAP will tend to increasingly resemble other parties it is prone to attack and abuse.

Michael Oakeshott, the conservative English political philosopher, spoke of the politics of the ‘politically inexperienced’. A new ruling class takes decades to learn how to rule. But the crisis that has overcome Punjab is too pressing to wait for a resolution. There was hope that the AAP would step in and provide some lasting solutions to perennial problems. For this the party has to learn to combine the politics of political mobilization with political vision and robust inner-party organization. It cannot be in a hurry.

  • Consumer Frauds by Health Insurance & Service Providers under Christie Watch

Consumer Frauds by Health Insurance & Service Providers under Christie Watch

After battling with my Insurer Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield (Horizon) and service provider Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (Barnabas Health) for 8 months; on 08-02-16 I filed a complaint against both of them with New Jersey Department of Banking & Insurance (NJDOBI).

In my complaint I accused Barnabas & Horizon of fraudulently fixing and approving exorbitantly very high prices for the services as compared to the market rates. I also accused Horizon that according to their own representative John, 08-02-16, the services availed by my son come under “Preventive Care Services”. So, there cannot be any deductible or coinsurance; it is 100% covered by Horizon. I mentioned that since 2003 I have been using Associates in Cardiovascular Diseases in Springfield, NJ 973 467 0005 and according to their billing department for a non-insured/self cash pay for  Echo Study that includes Doppler, color flow and congenital they charge $305.00 and for EKG$21.32.

I also mentioned that for 8 months against my numerous verbal and written requests, Barnabas has refused to provide me the detailed bill with CPT codes for the test done for my son. He had an open heart surgery in 2004 at Beth Israel and is required to go for routine checkup every 5 years as an outpatient at Beth Israel aka Barnabas Heath. For the last visit in 2009 we were not billed anything. For the 12-14-15 visit Barnabas billed me for $2,556.88 as my share after receiving $853.27 from Horizon for the Test and NBIMC billed $60.20 as my share for the physician office visit and test interpretations after receiving $316.42 from Horizon. The original billing by Horizon was $4,122.00 and by NBIMC was $702.00. After discount / adjustment of $711.85 Horizon’s final bill was $3410.15 and NBIMC was $414.66 after discount of $287.34.

On 09-01-16 NJDOBI’s investigator Ms. Eileen Cashman-Jermak wrote to me that “All the information submitted by you (me) and the company has been thoroughly reviewed and it appears that the company’s actions are in accordance with the provisions of the policy contract, applicable statues and regulations. As a result, no further actions are required at this time.” In her letter she provided me the details for the test done along with CPT codes on behalf of Barnabas that they have refused to provide me for the last over 8 months.

The response of Ms. Eileen clearly indicates that she is not working for the consumers of the New Jersey; rather she is working for the Insurance company and the service provider. This I can safely say on the basis of the further investigations I did on my own:

I called Horizon Member Services on 09-08-16 and spoke to Ms. Lori Call ref # 1-5384124822U according to her All these testsunder CPT code 93303, 93320, 93325, 93005 & 94760 come under “Preventive Care Services” no deductible, no co-pay & 100%covered by Horizon.

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center aka Barnabas Health: (non-Invasive Cardiac Care)

09-08-16 I asked Ms. Giselle 973 926 7475 for a price quote for self-paying patient with no insurance for same diagnostic test as an outpatient. She told me that “we do not do CPT 93303 we have 93306 that covers 93303, 9320 & 9325 cost is $752.00 including physician charges for interpreting the results. For CPT 93005 & 94760 you have to call the other department. I asked them to put it in writing and fax/e-mail me the price quote. She told me her supervisor will send it to me. When I never received any fax/e-mail, next day on 09-09-16 I called Ms. Giselle again and she told me to talk to Ms. Arlene McGaugh 973 926 8294.

On 09-09-16 I spoke to Ms. Arlene McGaugh and she asked me to fax to 973 282 2432 the CPT codes for the test I want as self paying patient with no insurance. I received an e-mail at 12:08 PM from Jamie Ortiz that all the test CPT code 93303, 93320, 93325, 93005 & 94760 will cost $910.27 as cash/self pay out patient inclusive of physician charges.

All the above indicate that NJDOBI investigation and conclusions are totally flawed and are in favor of Horizon & Barnabas. May be Ms. Eileen never did any investigations!

    1. Why NJDOBI has not questioned Barnabas Health for not providing me the detailed bill along with the CPT codes despite my numerous requests? I did file documentary proof for the same on 08-02-16 to NJDOBI on this matter also. After 9 months NJDOBI provided me the CPT codes for the services providedto my son on behalf of Barnabas.
    2. Did NJDOBI raise any question to why Beth Israel never disclosed upfront what test they will be doing and what will be the tentative cost especially when the cost was$4,122.00 for the Test and $702.00 for the physician?
    3. NJDOBI could have called Beth Israel or any other facility to enquire about the charges for all the test and physician charges to verify my allegations made on 08-02-16 that Horizon & Barnabas are colluding with each other to inflate the prices of the services rendered on 12-14-15 to do consumer frauds in this case me.
    1. NJDOBI failed to question Horizon why they paid NBIMC $244.06 for “New Patient Office Exam” when my son is not a new patient.
    2. NJDOBI failed to verify my claim that services rendered on 12-14-15 comes under “Preventive Care Services” that attracts no deductible, no co-pay &Horizon must pay 100% for these services.
    3. Even if the Horizon disputes after disowning the 09-08-16 statement of their representative Ms. Lori that services under CPT code 93303, 93320, 93325, 93005 & 94760 comes under “Preventive Care Services”; why I will pay $2,556.88 to Barnabas on top of $853.27 already paid by Horizon and$60.20 as my share for the physician after $316.42 paid by Horizon when for the same services as Self Pay with no insurance Barnabas is asking$910.27 including physician interpretation charges for the test?

Horizon has a fiduciary duty to protect its policy holders/consumers but it has failed them miserably. Its CEO makes over $5 million and other executive close to or more than a million dollars and they still do not know how to negotiate prices for the services rendered by hospitals or doctors especially when they are providing them regular supply of patients. I don’t think they are brain dead or retarded otherwise they should not be occupying such top positions in Horizon with millions in compensation every year. It looks like Horizon executives are running scams for direct or indirect material benefits that’s why they approved $3,410.15 after so called negations from $4,122.00 for the test and $ 376.62 from $702.00 (office visit $473.00 & $229.00 for test interpretation) for the physician billed by NBIMC. Surprisingly the same Beth Israel aka Barnabas Health is selling these services for $910.27 to an individual with no insurance including physician’s interpretation charges. The scammers posing as Executives making millions of dollars at Horizon in their fiduciary duties are trying to prove to their policy holders that they negotiated the best prices for them! It is defying the centuries old business logic that when you buy in bulk the goods or services; the prices are much lower as buying 1 piece or buying a service one time only.

Since becoming the Chairman of Republican Governors Association in Nov 2013 Governor Christie first wasted his time on his non existent chance of US Presidential Candidate and then on VP of Republican front runner Donald Trump and currently he is dreaming of a Cabinet position in Trump government. That is the reason under the absentee Gov. Christie’s leadership NJDOBI has failed to regulate Horizon and Barnabas Healthcare. NJDOBI have no objections if Horizon& Barnabas can penalize me/consumer for having a self-paying individual Health Insurance Policy from the market place! Christie administration also has no objection if these companies are doing consumer frauds under the supervision of their own supervisory staff that has no desire to properly investigate complaints against them.

All of the above is happening because there is no government in New Jersey to protect the interest of its citizens. Rather New Jersey has been let down by its politicians across the aisle whether it was Bias intimidation law, HIB law, Domestic Terrorism law, consumer or child or women or senior citizens’ welfare. The NJ lawmakers pass laws without reading them and when you request them to make changes because it is hurting people even with well documented pitfalls; they write to you that we have to receive more complaints rather more victims of vaguely  written laws before we make any changes! If you complain

Christie government and Christie himself if informed that the local government of your town is doing massive frauds; the concerned department and Christie will rarely acknowledge your complaint. They will toss it up to another department and they will toss up to some other department, this process of tossing up will continue till you give up your hopes for any justice. If you report consumer frauds by big companies, they tell you that the company is doing everything in accordance with the provisions under the applicable laws!

Mind it practically all the lawmakers of New Jersey are attorneys and running their own practices also. For all the anti-people policies created by dishonest politicians of both the parties, New Jersey is called a “Mafia State,” a state for 8.5 million residents with over 10,000 elected political scoundrels representing 587 local and 1 state government with over 630,000 employees! Under Christie’s mismanagement supported by the lawmakers of both parties, New Jersey’s credit rating has been downgraded nine times (across Standard & Poor, Fitch Ratings, and Moody’s Investors Service), leaving only Illinois with a lower rating among US states. Because of their collective hard work New Jersey rank 3rd with $35 billion debt for 8.5 mil residents after New York with 2nd place with $63 billion for 19.75 mil residents and California with 1ST place with $94 billion for 38.8 mil residents. In fact New Jersey rank number 1 in USA with per capita debt of $4,117.65 followed by New York with $3,189.87 at 2nd place and California with $2,422.68 at 3rd place.

India woos new Nepal PM Prachanda to claw back ground from China

NEW DELHI/KATHMANDU (TIP): India is likely to offer Nepal’s new prime minister help building an east-west railway line and better access to its ports on his first visit this week, as it tries to regain ground lost recently to China.

Prachanda+ , a former Maoist rebel commander, has chosen New Delhi as his first foreign stop, seeking to rebalance ties that chilled under his pro-China predecessor. KP Oli had sealed trade deals that sought to reduce landlocked Nepal’s economic dependence on India.

“Relations with India have become frosty for some time. I want to remove the bitterness,” Prachanda told reporters on Tuesday evening in Kathmandu, adding India now “wants to help Nepal, which is in difficulties.”

Nepal has yet to complete a political transition after a decade-long insurgency and weeks of deadly street protests that brought down the monarchy nearly a decade ago.

Pak PM Nawaz Sharif to consult Hurriyat, PoK leaders before leaving for US

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will hold consultations with Hurriyat and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) leaders on Sept 16 before leaving for the US to address the UN General Assembly, where he is likely to raise the Kashmir issue.

“Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will come here in Muzaffarabad on Friday before leaving for New York. He will consult the Kashmiri leadership regarding his speech at the UN session,” PoK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider said.

He said the premier will hold separate meetings with PoK legislators and a delegation of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, PoK chapter.

“The prime minister wants to take the Kashmiri leadership into confidence over the content of his speech to be delivered at the UN General Assembly session on September 21,” the Dawn News quoted him as saying.

Haider said the gesture would send a positive message across the Line of Control (LoC). Sharif is likely to leave for the US on September 17.

  • Animal sacrifices turn Dhaka streets into rivers of blood

Animal sacrifices turn Dhaka streets into rivers of blood

DHAKA (TIP): Large-scale animal sacrifices marking the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha combined with heavy rains have turned the streets of Bangladesh’s capital into rivers of blood.

Authorities in Dhaka designated several places in the city where residents could slaughter animals, but heavy downpours Tuesday meant few people could use those areas.

Muslims traditionally mark Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, by slaughtering livestock. Usually a goat, sheep or a cow is killed to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s test of faith.

The meat of the sacrificed animals is shared among family and friends and poor people who cannot afford to sacrifice animals as a gesture of generosity to promote social harmony.

Dhaka residents used parking lots, garages and alleys to kill the animals and the blood flowed into the flooded streets, turning them into rivers of blood. Flooding is common in Dhaka, an overcrowded city of more than 10 million people, because of poor drainage systems.

Exiled Baloch leader Brahumdagh Bugti to get Indian citizenship, Pakistan media reports

ISLAMABAD (TIP): In a move that will no doubt annoy Pakistan, Geo News reported late yesterday that Baloch leader Brahumdagh Bugti, currently in exile in Switzerland, is set to get Indian citizenship after long negotiations with Indian authorities.

India will also give citizenship to Brahumdagh’s key lieutenants in Switzerland, including his trusted aides, Sher Muhammad Bugti and Azizullah Bugti, sources told Geo News, a Pakistani media outlet. Brahumdagh is founder of the Baloch Republican Party (BRP), that Pakistan has outlawed.

Interestingly, Indian officials and Brahumdagh began talks about granting him Indian citizenship earlier this year, much before Prime Minister Narendra Modi began to be proactive in highlighting Pakistan’s human rights abuses in its beleaguered Balochistan province, a BRP source told Geo, a Pakistani media outlet.

“We will use Indian papers to travel around the world to campaign against Pakistan and to highlight our case. We have openly thanked Narendra Modi for his support and we are no more hiding anything. We have no other option. We do not care what our opponents think of our support for Modi and his support for us,” the BRP source is quoted as saying.

Brahumdagh has alleged in the past that the Swiss government is under pressure from Pakistan to not grant him citizenship. He realized earlier this year, the report says, that he may not get a Swiss passport any time soon and could be confined in Switzerland for an indefinite period of time.

The Baloch leader fled his hometown Dera Bugti in Balochistan in 2006 following the assassination of his grandfather Akbar Bugti. He lived in Afghanistan as a state guest, first, and was then flown from there to Switzerland in October 2010. He has been living there ever since, in political asylum, with his family.

Brahumdagh will formally apply for Indian citizenship in Geneva, Switzerland, after a meeting of his party’s officials there on September 18-19. In the meeting, seven members of the 16-member BRP – from Germany, London, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland – are expected to be present and endorse Brahumdagh’s decision to get India’s help.

“India has facilitated Dalai Lama against the pressure from a powerful country like China. It helped Sheikh Mujeeb-ur-Rehman as well. It will help Brahumdagh and his colleagues as well. Brahumdagh has asked for Indian citizenship for himself and all his colleagues. There are 15,000 Bugtis stuck in Afghanistan. Around 2,000 are in various countries including European countries. Their asylum applications have been either approved or are in process. Brahumdagh would like all these people accommodated along with his own case,” said the BNP source told Geo News.(PTI)

  • ART OF THE LIE: Politicians have always lied. Does it matter if they leave the truth behind entirely?

ART OF THE LIE: Politicians have always lied. Does it matter if they leave the truth behind entirely?

CONSIDER how far Donald Trump is estranged from fact. He inhabits a fantastical realm where Barack Obama’s birth certificate was faked, the president founded Islamic State (IS), the Clintons are killers and the father of a rival was with Lee Harvey Oswald before he shot John F. Kennedy.

Mr. Trump is the leading exponent of “post-truth” politics-a reliance on assertions that “feel true” but have no basis in fact. His brazenness is not punished, but taken as evidence of his willingness to stand up to elite power. And he is not alone. Members of Poland’s government assert that a previous president, who died in a plane crash, was assassinated by Russia. Turkish politicians claim the perpetrators of the recent bungled coup were acting on orders issued by the CIA. The successful campaign for Britain to leave the European Union warned of the hordes of immigrants that would result from Turkey’s imminent accession to the union.

If, like this newspaper, you believe that politics should be based on evidence, this is worrying. Strong democracies can draw on inbuilt defenses against post-truth. Authoritarian countries are more vulnerable.

    Lord of the lies

That politicians sometimes peddle lies is not news: think of Ronald Reagan’s fib that his administration had not traded weapons with Iran in order to secure the release of hostages and to fund the efforts of rebels in Nicaragua. Dictators and democrats seeking to deflect blame for their own incompetence have always manipulated the truth; sore losers have always accused the other lot of lying.

But post-truth politics is more than just an invention of whingeing elites who have been outflanked. The term picks out the heart of what is new: that truth is not falsified, or contested, but of secondary importance. Once, the purpose of political lying was to create a false view of the world. The lies of men like Mr. Trump do not work like that. They are not intended to convince the elites, whom their target voters neither trust nor like, but to reinforce prejudices.

Feelings, not facts, are what matter in this sort of campaigning. Their opponents’ disbelief validates the us-versus-them mindset that outsider candidates thrive on. And if your opponents focus on trying to show your facts are wrong, they have to fight on the ground you have chosen. The more Remain campaigners attacked the Leave campaign’s exaggerated claim that EU membership cost Britain £350m ($468m) a week, the longer they kept the magnitude of those costs in the spotlight.

Post-truth politics has many parents. Some are noble. The questioning of institutions and received wisdom is a democratic virtue. A skeptical lack of deference towards leaders is the first step to reform. The collapse of communism was hastened because brave people were prepared to challenge the official propaganda.

But corrosive forces are also at play. One is anger. Many voters feel let down and left behind, while the elites who are in charge have thrived. They are scornful of the self-serving technocrats who said that the euro would improve their lives and that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Popular trust in expert opinion and established institutions has tumbled across Western democracies.

Post-truth has also been abetted by the evolution of the media (see Briefing). The fragmentation of news sources has created an atomized world in which lies, rumor and gossip spread with alarming speed. Lies that are widely shared online within a network, whose members trust each other more than they trust any mainstream-media source, can quickly take on the appearance of truth. Presented with evidence that contradicts a belief that is dearly held, people have a tendency to ditch the facts first. Well-intentioned journalistic practices bear blame too. The pursuit of “fairness” in reporting often creates phoney balance at the expense of truth. NASA scientist says Mars is probably uninhabited; Professor Snooks says it is teeming with aliens. It’s really a matter of opinion.

When politics is like pro-wrestling, society pays the cost. Mr. Trump’s insistence that Mr. Obama founded IS precludes a serious debate over how to deal with violent extremists. Policy is complicated, yet post-truth politics damns complexity as the sleight of hand experts use to bamboozle everyone else. Hence Hillary Clinton’s proposals on paid parental leave go unexamined (see article) and the case for trade liberalization is drowned out by “common sense” demands for protection.

It is tempting to think that, when policies sold on dodgy prospectuses start to fail, lied-to supporters might see the error of their ways. The worst part of post-truth politics, though, is that this self-correction cannot be relied on. When lies make the political system dysfunctional, its poor results can feed the alienation and lack of trust in institutions that make the post-truth play possible in the first place.

    Pro-truthers stand and be counted

To counter this, mainstream politicians need to find a language of rebuttal (being called “pro-truth” might be a start). Humility and the acknowledgment of past hubris would help. The truth has powerful forces on its side. Any politician who makes contradictory promises to different audiences will soon be exposed on Facebook or YouTube. If an official lies about attending a particular meeting or seeking a campaign donation, a trail of e-mails may catch him out.

Democracies have institutions to help, too. Independent legal systems have mechanisms to establish truth (indeed, Melania Trump has turned to the law to seek redress for lies about her past). So, in their way, do the independent bodies created to inform policy-especially those that draw on science.

If Mr. Trump loses in November, post-truth will seem less menacing, though he has been too successful for it to go away. The deeper worry is for countries like Russia and Turkey, where autocrats use the techniques of post-truth to silence opponents. Cast adrift on an ocean of lies, the people there will have nothing to cling to. For them the novelty of post-truth may lead back to old-fashioned oppression.

  • Edward Snowden wasn’t a whistleblower: US House panel

Edward Snowden wasn’t a whistleblower: US House panel

WASHINGTON (TIP): A US congressional intelligence committee on September 15 issued a scathing report accusing former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden of leaking information that “caused tremendous damage” to US. national security, lying about his background and feuding with co-workers.

In a report endorsed by both its Republican and Democratic leaders, the House intelligence committee said Snowden was “not a whistleblower” as he has claimed.

Most of the material he stole from the NSA was not about invasions of privacy, but revealed intelligence and defense programs of great interest to America’s foreign adversaries, it said. The committee said that while the “full scope” of damage caused by Snowden’s disclosures remains unknown, a review of materials he allegedly compromised “makes clear that he handed over secrets that protect American troops overseas and secrets that provide vital defenses against terrorists and nation-states.”

The committee released only a four-page summary of what it said was a 36-page investigative report that remains Top Secret, but the summary contained strong words about Snowden’s actions and background.

The report contains previously unreported allegations about Snowden and his possible motives for taking government secrets. It alleges that Snowden, who took refuge in Moscow after fleeing to Hong Kong, “was and remains a serial exaggerator and fabricator.”

  • Wells Fargo to pay $185 million settlement for ‘outrageous’ sales culture

Wells Fargo to pay $185 million settlement for ‘outrageous’ sales culture

LOS ANGELES, CA (TIP): Calling it “outrageous” and “a major breach of trust,” local and federal regulators hammered Wells Fargo & Co. for a pervasive culture of aggressive sales goals that pushed thousands of workers to open as many as 2 million accounts that bank customers never wanted.

Those practices, first uncovered by the Los Angeles Times in 2013, led to a massive $185-million settlement package announced Thursday.

The settlements put to rest a lawsuit filed last year by Los Angeles City; Atty. Mike Feuer as well as investigations by two federal regulators: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

The bank did not admit any wrongdoing in the settlements, but it apologized to customers and announced steps to change its sales practices. It will pay $100 million to the CFPB – the largest fine the federal agency has ever imposed – as well as $50 million to the city and county of Los Angeles and $35 million to the OCC.

The bank will also pay refunds to customers who paid fees on accounts they never wanted.

“It’s outrageous for a bank to use a customer’s private information without permission to open an unwanted account,” Mike Feuer said. “Customers must be able to trust their banks.”

Feuer credited a 2013 LA Times story for sparking his investigation.

His office sued the bank last year, alleging Wells Fargo “victimized their customers by using pernicious and often illegal sales tactics,” including unrealistic quotas and policies that have “driven bankers to engage in fraudulent behavior.”

Feuer’s suit caught the attention of federal regulators, who conducted their own investigations. The CFPB, citing an analysis by Wells Fargo, said bank employees may have opened as many as 1.5 million checking and savings accounts, and more than 500,000 credit cards, without customers’ authorization.

The investigations found that employees illegally transferred funds from genuine accounts into unauthorized ones, created PINs for unwanted debit cards and made up bogus email addresses to secretly sign customers up for online banking.

Richard Cordray, director of the CFPB, said that those actions were so abusive and so widespread that the agency levied its largest fine to date.

“It reflects the severity of these violations, the breadth of the unfair and abusive practices and how seriously we take them,” Cordray said. “We found this conduct to be quite surprising.”

The bank had consistently said such practices were not widespread and that workers who cheat to meet sales goals are disciplined or fired. The CFPB said 5,300 workers have been fired for improper sales practices since 2011.

In a statement Thursday, Wells Fargo confirmed the settlements and said it has set aside $5 million to cover refunds to customers. The bank hired an outside firm that looked for potentially bogus accounts, a process that was finalized before the settlements were announced.

The bank said it has already provided refunds to about 100,000 customers, paying a total of $2.6 million so far with payments averaging $25.

“Wells Fargo is committed to putting our customers’ interests first 100% of the time, and we regret and take responsibility for any instances where customers may have received a product that they did not request,” the bank said in its statement.

The bank will send notices to customers asking them to stop by a branch so that employees can help “close any accounts or discontinue services you do not recognize or want.”

Bank spokeswoman Mary Eshet said the bank has already lowered sales goals, worked to structure employee incentives around customer satisfaction and hired more workers to monitor its sales staff. She said the bank has also started a “mystery shopper” program to look for bad behavior.

Regulators stopped short of accusing Wells Fargo executives of encouraging employees to open unauthorized accounts, but said the badly structured incentives and lack of oversight pushed employees to game the system, either to improve their pay or to keep their jobs.

In levying such a steep fine on Wells Fargo, the CFPB’s Cordray said his agency is sending a message to the entire banking industry that it must make sure sales tactics do not harm consumers.

“What happened here is Wells Fargo built an incentive-compensation program that made it possible for Wells Fargo employees to pursue underhanded sales tactics,” he said. “Companies need to pay very close attention … to ensure that customers are protected.”

Ed Mierzwinski, consumer program director at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, said the CFPB’s $100-million fine, while a relatively small sum for a company the size of Wells Fargo, is big enough that other banks will pay attention.

“It’s a message to all the bank lawyers out there that this kind of behavior should never happen again,” he said. “It’s a very strong message to other institutions about the gravity of this appalling conduct. $100 million is real money, even to a big bank.”

Despite the refunds, some customers say it won’t be so easy to undo the damage caused by the bank’s practices.

  • Akhilesh’s uncle Shivpal quits UP govt, steps down as SP state chief

Akhilesh’s uncle Shivpal quits UP govt, steps down as SP state chief

LUCKNOW (TIP): Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Shivpal Yadav quit the government as well as his position as chief of Samajwadi Party’s state unit on Thursday (Sept 15), in what is seen as a blow to the party ahead of state elections due early next year.

The move signalled an attempt by Shivpal to distance himself from his nephew and chief minister Akhilesh with whom he has been involved in a bruising fight for influence. It was not immediately clear if a split in the party was in the offing, but sources said the turn of events meant Akhilesh might have emerged stronger for now.

Sources said Akhilesh rejected Shivpal’s resignation from the cabinet, but the party had made no decision yet on his offer to quit as its state chief.

As Shivpal came out of his house late on Thursday, his supporters who had gathered to meet the leader erupted in joy. “Go home. Go to bed. I too will sleep,” Shivpal told them. “Na soeyengey, na soney denge (We won’t sleep, we won’t let others sleep),” the crowd replied.

The late night development came after a day of separate meetings between party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, his brother Shivpal and Akhilesh raised hopes of a truce between the uncle and nephew.

Mulayam met with the two separately to ask them to end their feuding. A meeting between the uncle and nephew lasted barely 15 minutes at the Akhilesh’s office.

Two days ago, Akhilesh stripped Shivpal of three top departments after the chief minister himself was removed as the party’s state chief and Shivpal given the post. Their differences, a badly kept secret for years, had become public over the past months.

The party’s Rajya Sabha MP, Amar Singh’s, alleged role in the crisis also figured in discussions during the day, with Akhilesh’s second uncle Ramgopal Yadav and party leader Naresh Agarwal hinting at his “interference” in party matters.

Akhilesh Yadav had also mentioned about an “outsider” which is seen as a reference to Amar Singh, who is seen as close to Shivpal.

Earlier in the day, Akhilesh found support from Ramgopal, who said the party should have consulted the chief minister before sacking him as state party president.

“Differences do take place on some minor point and they can be resolved,” Ramgopal said.

“He (CM) should have been asked to resign and he would have tendered it. He could have been told that elections are coming and you continue as CM and the work of state president will be taken care of by him (Shivpal). Some misunderstanding has taken place and there is nothing more to it,” he said.

Shivpal also spoke to journalists in Lucknow and asserted that the party was not in any kind of trouble.

“Whoever is given responsibility, whatever it be…we have to follow that. The party is not in trouble. If I am given a responsibility, I will work to the fullest for it. Nobody can challenge netaji’s (Mulayam) decisions,” he said .

“In 2011, when I was the state president, back then I was removed and Akhilesh was given responsibility and I accepted that. Netaji took that decision carefully and after consideration surely.”

  • Chaos in Punjab assembly, Cong MLA throws shoe at Majithia

Chaos in Punjab assembly, Cong MLA throws shoe at Majithia

CHANDIGARH (TIP): As curtains came down on the last assembly session of Punjab ahead of polls, it saw yet another first. After an unprecedented sit-in by Congress MLAs on the floor of the House for two nights, one of them hurled a shoe at the treasury benches over an alleged caste slur.

Half of party’s 42 MLAs had continued the sit-in, started on Monday (Sept 12) evening after the no-trust vote moved by the party was defeated, through Tuesday (Sept 13) night. When the session began at 10 am on Wednesday, the opposition members were already in the well of the house shouting slogans. Assembly speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal first adjourned the House for 15 minutes and later suspended the question and zero hour and asked the ministers to table reports and bills. Amid the bill-passing spree, agitated opposition members continued shouting slogans and threw bills and paper planes at his chair calling him a “sarkari speaker” for not allowing a debate on the no-confidence motion.

A huge posse of assembly marshals flanked the chairs of speaker and assembly secretary Shashi Lakhanpal Mishra to ward off the paper missiles. Amid the pandemonium, Congress MLA Tarlochan Singh Soondh hurled a shoe at the treasury benches. The shoe narrowly missed Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia, the brother-in-law of SAD president and Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal. After Majithia stood up and flashed the shoe before the house, Akali Dal and BJP legislators too left their seats. Both sides trained their guns at each other, plunging the house into utter chaos.

As Majithia instructed assembly marshals to find out the MLA with a missing shoe, the Congress decided to walkout. But Majithia threw Soondh a dare and asked him to “own up” that he hurled the shoe. “The assembly marshals told me Soondh was not wearing shoes. After hurling it, he was standing and shouting slogans from the chair of leader of opposition Charanjit Singh Channi and left his other shoe there. But when they were staging a walkout, I asked Soondh to have the guts to own up that it was him,” Majithia later told HT.

At 11.36 am, an hour-and-half after the session began, speaker Atwal adjourned the House sine die. Though many senior Congress leaders disapproved of the incident, the party decided to brazen it out and held a hurried press briefing to justify Soondh’s action. Flanked by party MLAs, Soondh admitted to throwing the shoe but claimed it was aimed at SAD MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha who “used expletives and insulted his community”.

“Valtoha took my name in the House and said ‘ae ne chure, chamara da theka laya ae’ (has he taken responsibility of all churas and chamars in Punjab). I am a proud Dalit and could not tolerate this insult to my community and hurled a shoe at him,” Soondh said. Channi, also a Dalit from the Ravisdassia sect, added that “100 shoes will be hurled if anyone insults Dalits”.

The Congress later held a mock session in the House and Soondh was made the “speaker”. Interestingly, at the mock session, Channi who had invited the wrath of the ruling benches by calling Badals “thugs”, spoke eloquently without using any offensive words till Congress MLA Jagmohan Kang raised a point of order and reminded him that he was forgetting the words he used inside. But the pun was not lost on senior Congress leaders who said on condition of anonymity that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had passed the baton of the assembly to “inexperienced” young leaders and they had little choice but to go by their decisions.

Make video public: Valtoha to speaker

The Akali Dal, too, lost no time to rebut Congress allegations. Soon after Congress media briefing, Valtoha denied abusing Soondh and claimed the assembly video recording would bear him out. He has written to the speaker to make the video public to “expose” the Congress. As is his wont, Valtoha went a step further and issued a statement accusing Congress MLAs of “drinking, eating non-vegetarian fare and singing and cracking jokes “ during their night stay. Congress MLAs Sukhjinder Randhawa and Tripat Bajwa too shot back asking Akalis to go to a gurdwara and say it under oath.

Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh, in a statement, congratulated his party MLAs for

“bringing Akalis on toes”. He said the he sit-in by the legislators helped in highlighting the issues for which the Congress had sought a debate and which was refused by the Speaker.

“With an arrogant government and not an impartial speaker, our members were left with no option. This was the beginning of the final assault on the government,” he added.

  • Cong MLA’s shoes get Rs 50,000 price tag

Cong MLA’s shoes get Rs 50,000 price tag

Chandigarh: Congress MLA from Banga Tarlochan Singh Soondh would never have imagined how his worn-out pair of shoes would become a “prized” possession.

A Canada-based news channel has reportedly offered Soondh Rs 50,000 if he could bring on their show the shoe allegedly hurled by him towards the Akali Dal legislators in the Vidhan Sabha, or even the one he did not throw.

The MLA went back to the Vidhan Sabha this afternoon to get his shoes. Secretary Shashi Lakhanpal Mishra reportedly told him that the shoe that landed near Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia was a “case property”, while the other one was not in their possession.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Mohan Mittal said while the shoe that fell near Majithia had been handed over to the Speaker’s office, he had no clue where the other one was.

Soondh had claimed that he had hurled the shoe at Akali MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha over an alleged caste slur.

The Treasury benches came to know about the shoe-hurler only when they noticed that Soondh had only   one shoe on. Sensing trouble, Soondh hid it near his seat. It was taken into possession by the watch and ward staff and its whereabouts are not known.

Soondh admitted receiving calls from Canada-based news organisations. “They want to highlight the incident as a strong protest not just against Majithia, but against the government,” he said. Soondh walked barefoot yesterday and asked the CLP office secretary to arrange a pair of shoes. “They did buy me a new pair, but it was uncomfortable. Now I am looking for a new pair in the Sector 19 market,” he said.

  • JOLT TO MEHBOOBA AS FOUNDING MEMBER KARRA QUITS PDP, AS MP TOO

JOLT TO MEHBOOBA AS FOUNDING MEMBER KARRA QUITS PDP, AS MP TOO

SRINAGAR (TIP): In the first major fallout of over two-month-long unrest in the Kashmir valley that has left over 80 persons dead, PDP’s founding member Tariq Hameed Karra resigned from the party and membership of Parliament on September 15.

He accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headed by CM Mehbooba Mufti of “becoming a collaborator for the fascist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-governed BJP and termed it an “unnatural alliance”.

“Though I was all along feeling suffocated due to PDP’s alliance with the RSS-backed BJP, my conscience was shaken over the last two months, especially due to PDP’s newly acquired avatar during the present upheaval,” Tariq Karra told reporters.

“Taking a call of conscience and as a mark of protest against the brutal policies of the BJP at the Centre and the state government’s complete sellout and surrender before them, I have decided to disassociate myself from the primary membership of the party and from the membership of Parliament,” he said.

Karra said his resignation was also in protest against “wanton killings and treating people worse than Nazi forces”. “Every single day Kashmiris are being butchered… Kashmiri blood is being spilled onto walls, in lanes and drains of the Valley. For the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, people were not allowed to offer Eid prayers. Grand mosques and shrines were locked. My apprehension that the PDP’s facilitated RSS-backed BJP will impose religious ingression stands vindicated today,” he said. “The PDP is losing its character and they are doing exactly what they opposed since the party formation,” he said. The MP, who was elected from Srinagar in 2014, said he would be forwarding the resignation to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Karra’s quitting the party is a major setback for the PDP, which has been facing sharp criticism over its handling of the situation in the state. The 61-year-old MP, known as PDP’s face in Srinagar, has been openly airing his views against the PDP-BJP alliance.

Karra is the second politician to resign after the unrest erupted. He also asked other lawmakers to decide about their future course of action as per their conscience.

NEW DELHI (TIP): The growing threat from Islamic State and its spread has made the BRICS to work. The member nations have decided to pool in efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism sprouting from the West Asia and North Africa region, exchange best practices in counter-terrorism and join hands on cyber-security and energy security.

These three issues figured prominently during the meeting of the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa high representatives responsible for security in their respective countries. The sixth meeting of this group was chaired by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval who hosted the event.

“While highlighting the need for resolution of outstanding disputes in the WANA region through dialogue peaceful means and in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN charter, BRICS High Representatives also agreed to pool BRICS’ efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism emanating from the region,” External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said here. The focus appears to be to work together in battling the ISIS that breeds in Syria and Iraq.

In the area of cyber security/information security, the representatives agreed to strengthen joint efforts on enhancing cyber security by sharing of information and best practices, combating cybercrimes, improving cooperation between technical and law enforcement agencies, including joint cyber security R&D and capacity building. They encouraged cooperation and exchanging of best practices, expertise, information and knowledge on counterterrorism issues. In this context, they welcomed the first meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Counter Terrorism that was held a day before.

They underscored the need for a global legal regime to deal with the global menace of terrorism.

British envoy to Saudi Arabia converts to Islam, performs Haj

RIYADH (TIP): Simon Collis, Britain’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, has performed Haj after recently converting to Islam, it was reported on September 14.

The diplomat was pictured with his wife in the traditional white garments of the annual pilgrimage, which is compulsory for Muslims to perform at least once in their lives.

Collis has been posted in Riyadh, the capital of the Arab kingdom, since 2015. He is the first British ambassador to perform Haj, an online portal reported.

Married to Huda al-Mujarkech, a Syrian Muslim, Collis has previously served as Britain’s ambassador to Iraq, Bahrain and Syria – where he was kicked out by President Bashar al-Assad in 2012 when diplomatic relations collapsed in the face of the growing Syrian civil war.

He has also served in positions in Tunisia, India, Yemen and the UAE. He said that he had converted to Islam “after spending 30 years in Muslim societies”.

Photographs of Collis and Mujarkech on Haj were posted on an Arabic-language Twitter account by the user Fawziah al-Bakr along with the comment: “The first British ambassador to the Kingdom performing Haj after converting to Islam: Simon Collis with his wife Huda in Makkah Mekkha.”

235,000 Libyan migrants ready to head to Italy: UN

ROME (TIP): Some 235,000 migrants in Libya are ready to make the dangerous Mediterranean crossing to Italy as soon as the opportunity arises, UN envoy Martin Kobler said in an interview published September 15.

According to Italy’s interior ministry, nearly 128,400 migrants have arrived via the Mediterranean since the start of the year — which is a five percent jump over the same period in 2015.

“We have on our lists 235,000 migrants who are just waiting for a good opportunity to depart for Italy, and they will do it,” Kobler told Italian daily La Stampa.

“Reinforcing security is the most important issue at the moment. If we have a strong and unified army… then the dangers of terrorism and human trafficking will cease,” he added.

Libya’s UN-backed Government of National Accord based in Tripoli is struggling to assert its authority and has been facing staunch resistance from a rival administration based in the country’s remote east.

Fighting for control of the nation’s oil assets has renewed fears of a civil war in Libya, which plunged into chaos after the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

Libya’s 1,770 kilometres (1,100 miles) of coastline have become a popular staging point for migrants seeking to reach Europe.

Kobler also said the offensive to capture key oil ports by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who supports the rival administration in the country’s east, was “very worrying.”

“Libya is in need of dialogue, stability and unity. I have contacted general Haftar and I am ready to meet him in order to find a solution allowing for the creation of a single army,” he added.

  • Malaysia confirms debris found in Tanzania is from MH370

Malaysia confirms debris found in Tanzania is from MH370

KUALA LUMPUR (TIP): A piece of aircraft wreckage+ found in June off Tanzania has been confirmed as coming from the doomed airliner MH370+ , Malaysia said on September 15.

The debris, found on Pemba Island off the Tanzanian coast, is the latest piece of wreckage to be linked to the Malaysia Airlines jet+ , whose disappearance remains a mystery.

Malaysia’s transport ministry said the piece of debris, which had been taken to Australia for expert analysis, was found to have part numbers, date stamps and other identifiers confirming it came from the Malaysia Airlines jet.

“As such, the experts have concluded that the debris, an outboard flap, originated from the aircraft 9M-MRO, also known as MH370,” a ministry statement said.

“Further examination of the debris will continue in hopes that evidence may be uncovered which may provide new insight into the circumstances surrounding flight MH370.”

Authorities had earlier said the piece of debris was “highly likely” to have come from MH370. However, the confirmation appears to have so far shed no fresh light on the plane’s fate.

The Malaysia Airlines jet was carrying 239 passengers and crew when it disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014.

It is believed to have crashed into the Indian Ocean, but an extensive deep-sea hunt off Australia’s west coast is drawing to a close with nothing found yet.

However, several pieces of debris that apparently drifted thousands of kilometres toward the African coast have been identified as definitely or probably from the Boeing 777. (AFP)
