Sheikh Hasina declares Pakistan a ‘defeated force’

DHAKA: Terming Pakistan a “defeated force”, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said Islamabad’s protests over recent execution of a 1971 war crimes convict prompted Bangladesh to pull out of the SAARC Summit.

“Pakistan is a defeated force. We defeated them in our Liberation War (in 1971), as a defeated force they can tell many things which matters little to us… Pakistan’s view is nothing but the aspersion of a defeated party, which people of Bangladesh should consider in that manner,” she said.

    {dfp_html}

Pakistan’s protests over recent executions of a 1971 war crimes’ convict prompted Bangladesh to take the decision not to join the 19th SAARC summit to be held in Islamabad, Hasina said at a press meet here, a day after returning from New York where she attended the UN General Assembly.

“The diplomatic ties will be there… we will face them (Pakistan) diplomatically,” the Prime Minister said.

She asked Bangladeshis to think about the relationship of “cohorts and patrons” of perpetrators of 1971 war crimes against humanity who carried out genocides siding with Pakistani troops during the Liberation war, in an oblique reference to main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

“BNP’s founder General Ziaur Rahman rehabilitated them (war criminals) after 1975… She (Zia) rewarded the (now executed) war criminals making them ministers in her cabinet. Before severing diplomatic relation with Pakistan, people of Bangladesh should consider cutting off links with their local cohorts and boycott them in the social and political arena,” Hasina said.

Asked what is her government’s stand on the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Hasina said the situation “concerns us”.

“We do not want any tension, war-like situation… in that case we will also be affected and our development of the region will be disrupted. What we sincerely expect is the two countries will settle their issues through dialogue bilaterally,” she said.

Ties between Bangladesh and Pakistan witnessed strain after Dhaka initiated the trial of Bangladeshi perpetrators of 1971 war crimes in 2010 in line with Hasina’s electoral pledges, with Islamabad repeatedly condemning the trials.

In the latest such incident, Pakistan reacted to execution of a business tycoon and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali last month saying “the act of suppressing the opposition, through ‘flawed trials’, is completely against the spirit of democracy”, angering Dhaka.

Bangladesh so far carried out judicial execution of six condemned war criminals, five being leaders of Jamaat which was opposed to the 1971 independence.

The 19th SAARC Summit was postponed after the pull-out by India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan indirectly blaming Pakistan for creating an environment which was not right for the success of the meet. Later, Sri Lanka also pulled out of the summit which was scheduled for November 9-10 in Islamabad.

China rescues JeM chief Masood Azhar at UN; Motive unknown!!!

China once again blocked India’s bid at United Nations to get Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist.

However, the government sources say that India will continue with its effort to ban Masood Azhar.

China’s technical hold was set to lapse on Monday, and had it not raised further objection, the resolution designating Azhar as a terrorist would have been passed automatically. The hold has now been extended and it can continue for upto three months more.

“Terrorism is like a poisonous snake, which has always bitten the ones underplaying it. China should take a lesson from history,” said BJP National Secretary Shrikant Sharma.

Stating that China has had taken pro-Pakistan stance in the past as well, former RAW officer Col RSN Singh urged Indians to not worry.

On March 31 this year, China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the UN Security Council, had blocked India’s move to put a ban on the JeM leader and Pathankot terror attack mastermind under the Sanctions Committee of the Council. China was the only member in the 15-nation UN organ to put a hold on India’s application with all other 14 members of the Council supporting New Delhi’s bid to place Azhar on the 1267 sanctions list that would subject him to an assets freeze and travel ban.

#MAKEININDIA – Anil Ambani-Led Reliance Group, Rafale Maker Dassault Aviation Announces Joint Venture

In a major deal for India’s private defence industry, Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group and Rafale maker Dassault Aviation today announced a joint venture (JV) that will be a “key player” in execution of offset contract worth about Rs 22,000 crore as part of the fighter jet deal.

The announcement of the JV, Dassault Reliance Aerospace, comes within days of India and France on September 23 signing an agreement for 36 Rafale fighter jets at a value of euro 7.87 billion, or about Rs 59,000 crore.

The agreement includes a 50 per cent offset obligation, the largest-ever offset contract in the history of India.

The main point of the offset agreement is 74 per cent of it has to be imported from India, which means direct business worth around Rs 22,000 crore.

The offset, spread over seven years, will be finalised soon.

There is also a technology-sharing component, which is being discussed with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Other companies involved in the Rafale deal include French firms MBDA and Thales, besides Safran, which too will be part of the overall offset obligation.

The Dassault Reliance Aerospace joint venture will be a key player in the execution of offset obligations, a joint statement by the companies said.

The development has come as a boost to the Reliance Group, which entered the defence sector only in January 2015.

“This new joint venture called Dassault Reliance Aerospace will support Prime Minister Modi’s Make in India and Skill India policies and develop major Indian programmes with high levels of technology transfer to benefit the entire aerospace sector,” it added.

The proposed strategic partnership between Dassault and Reliance will also focus on promoting research and development projects under the IDDM programme (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured), a new initiative of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

“The formation of this joint venture with Reliance Aerospace led by Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group illustrates our strong commitment to establish ourselves in India and develop strategic industrial partnerships under the Make in India policy promoted by the Indian government,” Eric Trappier, Dassault Aviation Chairman and CEO said.

“We are delighted to partner a world leader in aviation like Dassault Aviation. This is a transformational moment for the Indian aerospace sector and Reliance Infrastructure’s subsidiary Reliance Aerospace,” said Anil Ambani, Chairman of the Reliance Group.

  • Team Hillary Digs Up Trump’s Playboy Video After His Sex Tape Jibe

Team Hillary Digs Up Trump’s Playboy Video After His Sex Tape Jibe

Donald Trump is encouraging voters to check out a “sex tape” featuring the former beauty queen with whom he’s feuding. Hillary Clinton’s campaign is suggesting that a better rental is the adult film in which Trump himself appears.

With the presidential campaign taking a sordid turn, even many of Trump’s supporters shook their heads, worried that their candidate’s latest outburst could further hurt him among female voters already sceptical but whose support he’ll badly need to win in November.

The Republican nominee’s a pre-dawn Twitter tirade tore into the 1996 Miss Universe, Alicia Machado, a Venezuela-born woman whose weight gain Trump has said created terrible problems for the pageant he owned at the time. Clinton had cited Trump’s treatment of Machado near the end of their first debate, and Trump has spent days revisiting his complaints about Machado.

“Did Crooked Hillary help disgusting (check out sex tape and past) Alicia M become a US citizen so she could use her in the debate?” read a tweet Trump posted at 5:30am, one in a series of attacks on her.

The “sex tape” tweet apparently referred to footage from a Spanish reality show in 2005 in which Machado was a contestant and appeared on camera in bed with a male contestant. The images are grainy and do not include nudity, though Machado later acknowledged in the Hispanic media that she was having sex in the video.

Muddying the waters: an explicit 2000 Playboy video with a cameo by Trump. In a short clip posted on the website BuzzFeed, Trump pours a bottle of champagne on a Playboy-branded limo on a New York street, surrounded by a gaggle of women.

“There’s been a lot of talk about sex tapes today and in a strange turn of events only one adult film has emerged today, and its star is Donald Trump,” said Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill, adding he hadn’t seen the film.

Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign accused the media and Clinton of colluding to set him up for fresh condemnation, to which Clinton retorted, “His latest twitter meltdown is unhinged, even for him.”

Machado herself took to Facebook to say Trump’s tweets were part of a pattern of “demoralizing women,” calling them “cheap lies with bad intentions.” Planned Parenthood said it showed that Trump’s “misogyny knows no bounds.” And Clinton said they showed anew why someone with Trump’s temperament “should not be anywhere near the nuclear codes.”

With less than 40 days left in the election, Trump’s broadside threw his campaign into a fresh round of second-guessing the candidate’s instincts and confusion about what to do next. To believers in traditional political norms, it seemed like the opposite of what was needed to win over females, Hispanics and young Americans whose support could well determine the election.

Shaming Machado over intimate details from her past could be particularly risky as Trump tries to win over more female voters, many of whom are turned away by such personal attacks. It also risks calling further attention to the thrice-married Trump’s own history with women.

What kind of a man, Clinton asked, “stays up all night to smear a woman with lies and conspiracy theories?”

Even Trump’s most vocal allies seemed at a loss for words.

“He’s being Trump. I don’t have any comment beyond that,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a top supporter. Generally chatty and occasionally critical of Trump, Gingrich said tersely that Trump sometimes does “strange things,” but that Clinton lies. “I’ll let you decide which is worse for America.”

But Trump’s inner circle followed his lead by refusing to concede any missteps. Trump did not mention the tweets Friday evening as he rallied supporters in Michigan. Instead, he returned to Twitter to invoke Clinton’s famous ad from her 2008 campaign portraying her as the best candidate to pick up an urgent call at the White House at 3am.

“For those few people knocking me for tweeting at three o’clock in the morning, at least you know I will be there, awake, to answer the call!” Trump wrote.

Racist graffiti attack on historic black school in Virginia

A historic black school in Virginia which was being restored has been vandalised with racist graffiti.

The Ashburn Colored School in Virginia, about 30 miles (50km) west of Washington DC, was discovered covered in swastikas and “white power” slogans.

Local students had been restoring the crumbling building, hoping to create an education museum.

The group, which had raised $20,000 (£15,000) for the project, said it was “heartbroken about this senseless act”.

Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation.

“The vandalism to the Old Ashburn School is reprehensible and will not be tolerated here in Loudoun County,” said Sheriff Mike Chapman.

Swastikas were also painted across the windows, with another

The Ashburn Colored School opened in 1892, when schools were racially segregated by law, to teach African American students in Loudoun County.

It remained open until the late 1950s, years after the US Supreme Court banned segregated education.

Former student Yvonne Neal she : “It’s like a landmark for those of us who went there.”

Students from the neighbouring Loudoun School for the Gifted, who have been working on the restoration, hope to transform the interior into a museum of education.

“While we are heartbroken about this senseless act, please know that our students, volunteers, and community will work even harder to complete the dream of renovating the Ashburn Colored School,” the group said on its Facebook page.

A crowdfunding campaign for the project raised over $21,000, with a fresh wave of donations arriving since the vandalism.

The organisers estimate the total cost of the project at close to $100,000.

  • Pakistan police indicted in New Human Rights Watch Report for torture, extrajudicial killings

Pakistan police indicted in New Human Rights Watch Report for torture, extrajudicial killings

Police are responsible for custodial torture and other serious human rights violations, a new report by Human Rights Watch has said. The report comes amid growing allegations of rights abuses by Pakistan’s army.

The document released on Monday detailed problems faced by the police in reprimanding criminals and human rights violations by law enforcers in Pakistan. “Public surveys and reports of government accountability and redress institutions show that the police are one of the most widely feared, complained against, and least trusted government institutions in Pakistan,” the report said.

There were several reported cases of police killing criminal suspects outside the legal system, torturing detainees for confession and harassing and demanding money from individuals wanting to file criminal cases.

    Fake encounters and torture

Several officers spoke to Human Rights Watch, admitting that the force undertook fake “encounter killings,” in which police staged an armed exchange to kill suspects. These operations were often launched because of pressure from a local landowner or other influential people.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, over 2,000 people were killed in 2015 in armed encounters with the police. Most of these incidents took place in the province of Punjab. HRW quoted a police officer as saying that an “encounter killing is a way of ensuring that a known criminal does not escape justice because of lack of evidence and witnesses.”

HRW also discovered that custodial beatings with batons and strips of leather, sexual violence, and forcing criminals to witness torture were commonly used by police. Suspects were tortured “to obtain confessions or other information, to coerce bribes or because of pressure from local politicians or landowners.”

    Poor, women at a disadvantage

Members of downtrodden sections of Pakistani society also raised concerns with HRW about not being able to file a report with the police because of its “financial cost,” which referred to bribe-taking or the fear of harassment or threat.

Female victims of sexual assault found it particularly difficult to report the crime committed against them because of “misogynist and biased attitude” of state institutions, the report said. In many cases, women who were sexually attacked were often blamed for bringing it upon themselves.

    Problems faced by the police

Police said that maintaining law and order was an arduous task in the country, considering threats posed by armed extremist groups, local drug wars and land-grabbing. Insufficient infrastructure, lack of financial resources and interference from external sources contributed to the force’s performance.

“Elite elements within Pakistani society – be they politicians, landowners or members of civil and military bureaucracy – exercised outsized and improper control over law enforcement,” the report’s authors wrote. Appointments to important positions were also made on the basis of “political” links.

The report demanded that the government introduce effective systems to ensure police accountability and redress people’s grievances. The government also needed to remove laws that increased the police’s tendency towards impunity.

The latest allegations come as Pakistan’s military is accused of massive rights violations in the southwestern province of Balochistan, where many people have gone missing amid a government crackdown on insurgents.

  • ₹65,250 cr undeclared income and asset declared under black money scheme: FM

₹65,250 cr undeclared income and asset declared under black money scheme: FM

NEW DELHI: As much as ₹65,250 crore of black money was declared during the four-month compliance window of the Income Declaration Scheme that ended on September 30, finance minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday.

Jaitley said 64,275 declarations were made in the four-month window and this figure could go up once all the declarations filed online and manually are compiled.

The money declared totals ₹65,250 crore, of which 45 percent would accrue to the government as tax and penalty.

The government had provided illegal income and asset holders a one-time opportunity to come clean by declaring their black money under the four-month window and pay 45 per cent tax and penalty.

Reiterating that the one-time window was not an amnesty scheme like 1997 one, Jaitley said the tax collected in the 1997 Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme (VDIS) was ₹ 9,760 crore with an average declaration of ₹7 lakh.

The tax collected from the Income Declaration Scheme (IDS) 2016 will go into the Consolidated Fund of India and will be used for the larger welfare of people, he added.

Briefing reporters on the scheme, which was available from June 1 till the midnight of September 30, the finance minister said the tax authorities were still tabulating the declarations, both in physical and electronic form.

“So this (declarations) could be revised upward once the full tabulation takes place,” Jaitley said.

“Roughly, the declarations work out to ₹1 crore per declarant. Some will be higher, some will be lower,” he said, but ruled out any revelation of the names of the people who have availed of the scheme.

“We won’t give any specific information on tax declarants.”

‘Pakistan WEAK,’ admits Former President Pervez Musharraf

As the world unites against Islamabad terror agenda following the Uri terror attack, former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf admitted that Pakistan has been isolated globally.

He went on to blame PM Nawaz Sharif for his “wrong policies” that have tarnished Pakistan’s image.

While Islamabad is getting marginalized globally, Musharraf added that Prime Minister Sharif is getting no love from his countrymen either. The former President said that anger against Pakistan is growing every day.

“These things happen when we are internally weak, when external policies are not good, when there is mismanagement then such things happen. These are our weaknesses, said former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Additionally, Musharraf accepted the fact that India is garnering more support and growing stronger than Pakistan internationally. He warned the Sharif administration of serious consequences if the country doesn’t counter India’s growing support across the globe.

Talking about Pakistan-US relationship, Musharraf revealed that it has turned sour over the past few years. And, immediate measures need to be taken.

“Our relations with America during my regime do not exist anymore. America is upset with us. Under such circumstances, a nation becomes weak. It becomes internationally weak,” said Musharraf.

The comments from Pervez Musharraf came in after Pakistan-sponsored terrorists carried out attacks in Uri and Baramulla, and India intensified its military and diplomatic offensive against Pakistan.

Pakistan: A headache for the rest of the world

One by one, countries of the world are isolating Pakistan for its terror-backing agenda and its inability to act against terror havens it harbours on its soil.

From an online petition to brand it as a terror state and multiple warnings to act against terror to Six major nations boycotting the SAARC summit to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan is facing the heat from across the globe.

    Isolated Nawaz’s speech at UNGA
As Paistan faces isolation, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his speech at the 71st United Nations General Assembly played the victim card calling ‘Pakistan a victim of terrorism’. Pakistani Prime Minister further called the Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani as a ‘young leader’.

Hillary Clinton raises questions of the safety of Pakistan’s N-programme
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has expressed concern over the possibility of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons falling into the hands of extremists, which she said was “a threatening scenario”, according to an American media report. “Pakistan is running full speed to develop tactical nukes in their continuing hostility with India. But we live in fear that they’re going to have a coup; that jihadists are going to take over the government, they’re going to get access to nuclear weapons, and you’ll have suicide nuclear bombers. So, this could not be a more threatening scenario,” an American daily quoted Clinton as saying.

    The SAARC Effect

    Bangladesh

Besides India, three other SAARC members – Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan – have pulled out of the summit, indirectly blaming Pakistan for creating an environment which is not right for the successful holding of the meet.

“Bangladesh  remains steadfast in its commitment to regional cooperation, connectivity and contacts but believes that these can only go forward in a more congenial atmosphere. In view of the above, Bangladesh is unable to participate in the proposed Summit in Islamabad,” a statement by Bangladesh declared.

    Afghanistan

Afghanistan has supported the surgical strikes conducted by the Indian army on terror launch pads across the Line of Control.

“We feel the pain as similar way as India does. Nobody should allow any state to use itself as safe havens for terrorists. We need to ask ourselves what motivates certain circles in Pakistan who could tolerate the policy of violence in the shield of political objectives,” Afghanistan Envoy Shaida Mohammad Abdali said.

Following India’s stand, Afghanistan too has pulled out of the SAARC summit to be held in Islamabad stating that the atmosphere is not conducive enough to hold the summit.

    Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka pulled out of 19th SAARC Summit in Islamabad, becoming the fifth country to back India after India decided to boycott the summit.

“Sri Lanka regrets that the prevailing environment in the region is not conducive for holding the 19th SAARC Summit in Islamabad. Sri Lanka condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and stresses in this regard, the need to deal with the issue of terrorism in the region in a decisive manner,” Sri Lanka said today in a statement.

    Maldives

Maldives Government has condemned the Uri terrorist’s terror attack recently and wants a conductive atmosphere for SAARC summit to happen. The island nation also said that SAARC can happen only with unanimity among all members.  Maldives Government sources have told TIMES NOW that they support India’s initiative on counter terrorism.

    Nepal

After six nations pulled out of the SAARC Summit, Nepal on Sunday released a statement postponing the 19th summit to be held at Islamabad on November 9-10, 2016.

“Nepal regrets that regional environment is not conducive to host the 19th SAARC Summit scheduled for 9 and 10 November 2016 in Islamabad. The host country, Pakistan, has informed the Chair of SAARC of the postponement of the 19’h SAARC Summit,” the statement from Nepal Foreign Ministry said.

Nepal has also said that SAARC member states must ensure that their respective territories are not used by terrorists for cross border terrorism.

  • What Were Hillary Clinton’s Emails About? The Emailgate Scandal Explained

What Were Hillary Clinton’s Emails About? The Emailgate Scandal Explained

“Emailgate” has plagued Hillary Clinton’s campaign since the push for her nomination began nearly a year and a half ago, painting her as a corrupt politician, or in some cases, an inept one.

In March 2015, it became publicly known that Hillary Clinton, during her tenure as United States Secretary of State, had exclusively used her family’s private email server for official communications, rather than official State Department email accounts maintained on federal servers. Those official communications included thousands of emails that would later be marked classified by the State Department retroactively.

The controversy unfolded against the backdrop of Clinton’s 2016 presidential election campaign and hearings held by the United States House Select Committee on Benghazi. Some experts, officials, and members of Congress have contended that her use of private messaging systemsoftware and a private server violated State Department protocols and procedures, as well as federal laws and regulations governing recordkeeping.

In response, Clinton has said that her use of personal email was in compliance with federal laws and State Department regulations, and that former secretaries of state had also maintained personal email accounts though not their own private email servers.

In May 2016, the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General released an 83-page report about the State Department’s email practices, including Clinton’s.

On July 5, 2016 upon concluding its investigation, the FBI stated that Clinton was “extremely careless” in handling her email system but recommended that no charges be filed against Clinton.

On July 6, 2016, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that no charges would be filed.

On July 7, the State Department reopened its probe into the email controversy.

On September 2, 2016, the FBI published a report on the investigation into her server which was 58 pages.

    How did the scandal start?

For Clinton, the saga began at the start of her tenure as secretary of state. Rather than locking up her personal BlackBerry before heading into her secure office space and using an authorized State Department email address, Clinton fought concerned officials for the ability to exclusively use her personal phone for professional, family and friendly correspondence. After a meeting with Clinton’s chief of staff, specialists from the State Department and National Security Agency expressed concern that hackers could turn the phone into a listening device. Yet Clinton insisted on toting around her beloved BlackBerry.

What many of those involved—though it’s not clear how many—didn’t know was the more dangerous aspect of the problem: the fact that Clinton’s BlackBerry emails used “clintonemail.com,” the unsecure private server at her home, making her phone not only a potential listening device, but a source for reading sensitive discussions, as well.

Interest in Clinton’s use of a private email server spiked just after she left office in early 2013, when the New York Times published an exclusive report that cited lawyers and officials who said she may have broken federal law by keeping her emails private rather than submitting them to government recordkeeping.

The congressional committee investigating Clinton’s response to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi demanded that Clinton, her lawyers and the tech companies associated with the accounts turn over all emails relevant to the inquiry. The State Department provided the Benghazi committee with about 15,000 pages of relevant emails from her private server in August 2014. Between May 2015 and February 2016, the State Department continued to make public what would sum up to 30,000 emails. It has yet to release 14,900.

    Why do they matter?

Though Clinton and her aides insist her use of the private phone and “clintonemails.com” was a matter of convenience, officials worried about the server’s vulnerability to hacks. To make matters worse, eight email chains contained “top secret” information, 36 held information described simply as “secret,” another eight included “confidential,” information, and about 2,000 have been retroactively classified as “confidential,” the lowest level of classification, according to the Times.

Aside from making sensitive diplomatic information easy prey for hackers, the scandal also augmented voters’ suspicions that she is far from trustworthy and coincided with a dive in her favorability ratings, according to Gallup. Despite the sheer volume of her opponent Donald Trump’s widely-criticized remarks and reports of his own scandalous behavior, what might’ve been an easier race has become nearly a tie. In a recent McClatchy-Marist poll, for example, while 40 percent of likely voters held favorable views of Clinton, only 36 percent thought she was “honest and trustworthy.”

Exacerbating the image of dishonesty, Bill Clinton spontaneously met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on the tarmac of the Phoenix airport on June 27 just as the Justice Department was wrapping up its examination of his wife. And while the Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey announced on July 5 the bureau’s decision not to indict Clinton for her actions, he called her use of the private server “extremely careless”—not exactly an ideal quality for a commander in chief.

But didn’t Colin Powell do it, too?

When pressed about her use of the private server at the March 9 democratic primary debate, Clinton claimed that her predecessors “did the same thing.” But former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice, the first State Department leaders for which email was available, said they generally did not use the mode of correspondence while in office, as PolitiFact pointed out. Colin Powell, however, did use a personal email address, but not via a private server in his home.

Clinton might’ve had better luck in her attempt to divert attention from her private server had she pointed to the George W. Bush administration’s 22 million “lost” emails, as reported by Newsweek.

What’s in the emails, anyway? If you want, you can read them yourself on the FBI’s “Vault” records. Some of them provide humorous insight into the day-to-day workings of the State Department, but others are more serious. Most alarmingly, Clinton used the server to communicate State Department deliberations surrounding a covert drone strike operation, along with many other messages containing classified information. When questioned by the FBI about whether she understood the “C,” meaning “classified,” in the emails sent and received on the clintonemails.com account, Clinton said she thought the letter was used for alphabetical ordering.

Why are we still talking about this? Nearly a year after Clinton’s former democratic primary opponent Bernie Sanders told her that “the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails,” the scandal continues to dominate headlines. That’s in part because Republicans in Congress, such as House Speaker Paul Ryan and members of the House Oversight Committee, continued to bring up the issue long after the FBI ended its investigation. Trump has also repeatedly used the scandal as ammo to attack his opponent, giving her the moniker “Crooked Hillary,” which quickly became a hashtag. In his first debate with Clinton on Monday night, he pledged to release his tax returns if she released 30,000 emails—apparently unaware of the fact that 30,000 had already been made public.

The issue has sparked debates of the media’s creating a false equivalence between Trump and Clinton, with the former candidate said to be held to a lower standard than the latter.

As the release of Clinton’s remaining emails and the next Clinton-Trump debate approach, don’t expect the issue to go away anytime soon.

  • America ‘needs an adult’ in White House: Michelle Obama

America ‘needs an adult’ in White House: Michelle Obama

PHILADELPHIA: Michelle Obama told a diverse and enthusiastic crowd in Philadelphia today that candidates don’t change once they become president and that America “needs an adult in the White House.”

The first lady never mentioned Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during the rally at LaSalle University.

But there was no question that she was warning voters that candidate Trump would be the same as President Trump.

“The presidency doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are,” she told the cheering crowd. She referred to several comments Trump made during and after Monday’s debate, including his apparent acknowledgment that he’s paid no taxes some years. Trump said that makes him “smart.”

“If a candidate is erratic and threatening, if a candidate traffics in prejudice, fear and lies on the campaign trail, if a candidate thinks not paying taxes makes you smart, or that it’s good business when people lose their homes; if a candidate regularly and flippantly makes cruel and insulting comments about women, about how we look, how we act well, sadly, that’s who that candidate really is,” she said. “That is the kind of president they will be.”

She said the country needs a leader who is steady and measured because when making war-or-peace decisions, “the president can’t just pop off or lash out irrationally. No, we need an adult in the White House, I guarantee you.”

She cast Clinton as a tough, compassionate fighter who doesn’t back down and who loves her country. “Experience matters, preparation matters, temperament matters,” she said. “Hillary Clinton has it all. She’s the real deal.”

The first lady was heading to Pittsburgh for another rally for the Democratic presidential nominee later today. Trump’s campaign reacted to Obama’s speech with a statement saying Clinton is in “panic mode” in Pennsylvania because polls show the Republican presidential nominee surging in the battleground state.

  • Sushant Singh Rajput’s M S Dhoni: The Untold Story Break ALL Records!!!

Sushant Singh Rajput’s M S Dhoni: The Untold Story Break ALL Records!!!

STORY: The biopic on India’s celebrated skipper, MS Dhoni (played by Sushant Singh Rajput) begins on a rabble-rousing note. But after this World Cup scene (which Neeraj Pandey’s film will, of course, return to at the end), the narrative backtracks to a quiet afternoon in July 1981 and Dhoni’s birth in a Ranchi hospital ward, while his father Paan Singh Dhoni (Anupam Kher), a hard-working lower-middle-class man, waits nervously outside. A series of well-constructed vignettes follows: Dhoni as a boy being coerced by a coach to give up football for cricket, and to take up wicketkeeping (though he prefers batting); the support of his friends as it becomes evident that he has special talent and drive; the misgivings of his father, who has sensibly conservative ideas about what constitutes a secure future; repeated frustrations followed by a job in the Railways and the possibility of becoming a “bada aadmi“.

REVIEW: If you are a diehard fan of MS Dhoni and cricket (in that order), you are bound to love this film, which reveres its protagonist. Despite the glorification, what works is Sushant’s impeccable portrayal of a stoic Dhoni and the latter’s inspiring untold story – his journey from being a ticket collector to a renowned attacking batsman/wicket-keeper/captain.

Sushant internalises his character and becomes MSD, without heavily mimicking the cricketer. He even nails his iconic helicopter shot and restrained personality. The actor scores a winning knock. The film also boasts of a spectacular first-half, which showcases Dhoni’s initial struggle as an aspiring professional cricketer. It reminds you why sportsmen deserve the fame and money they get.

Neeraj Pandey recreates Dhoni’s Ranchi life beautifully. He keeps it authentic and relatable. This one scene shot at Kharagpur station particularly stands out. Sushant is seen trying to make his way through a sea of people. It’s him going against the tide, summing up Dhoni’s life journey as well. Supporting actors deserve a special mention as their performances tug at your heartstrings. A scene featuring Yuvraj Singh (Herry Tangri) is outstanding.

However the biopic loses its momentum in the second half with Dhoni’s love life getting undue prominence. Also, the cricketer’s questionable decisions or possible vices are mostly overlooked. His tiff with the senior players (Sehwag, Gambhir), rivalry with Yuvraj Singh, love-hate relationship with the media, team politics and criticism faced on occasions, barely find a passing reference. As a full-fledged biopic, this one-dimensional approach towards the lead character leaves you a tad discontented. But since you see the film through Dhoni’s eyes, it’s justified as one rarely sees faults in oneself.

Nonetheless, this cricket movie hits sufficient sixes making the ‘Dhoni Dhoni’ chants reverberate in the theatre.

CAST: [Voices] Jennifer Aniston, Kelsey Grammer, Ty Burrell, Daniel Trejo, Adam Samberg, Keegan Michael-Key

DIRECTION: Nicholas Stoller , Doug Sweetland | GENRE: Animation

STORY: Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet retail giant Cornerstore. Junior (Samberg), the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when the Baby Factory is accidentally activated on his watch, producing an adorable – and wholly unauthorized – baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop, in a frantic journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world – to deliver babies.

REVIEW: What do you do if you’re a young parent and need about an hour and a half to entertain your little one with a cute animated flick that’s neither too long nor too short in duration? Storks comes to the rescue! A perfectly serviceable means of entertainment for small kids with animation that is appealing to the eye without coming across as being too gaudy or overdone.

So as mentioned earlier, the Storks now have a bit of a change in focus on what their company delivers and so the direction shifts on to other things apart from the all-important task of delivering little bundles of joy swaddled in either pink or blue. This is solely due to the bull-headed stork Hunter (Grammer) does not really have a soft corner for kids. So, when the ‘baby making machine’ gets up and running by accident, Junior and Tulip (Crown) find themselves in a spot. They have to deliver the said baby to her family.

Sure, the script is funny and there are plenty of sight gags. But while its economical run-time won’t have tiny tots shifting impatiently in their seats, you might get the feeling that the film was a tad rushed along the way. In fact, to call the film fast-paced is an understatement. Nonetheless, the entertainment factor is still present and strongly so, and credit must be given for the rather original premise of the story. Kids are sure to find this one enjoyable.

    Banjo – Movie Review

STORY: The quintessential Mumbaiyya music of a few Banjo players, led by Taraat (Riteish Deshmukh) catches the fancy of a budding American singer Chris (Nargis Fakhri). She travels to Mumbai all the way from New York to hunt for Taraat and his quirky coterie, hoping to take their music international. But given their social and financial background, can the men live up to Chris’ expectations?

CAST: Riteish Deshmukh, Nargis Fakhri, Dharmesh DIRECTION: Ravi Jadhav GENRE: Musical
CAST: Riteish Deshmukh, Nargis Fakhri, Dharmesh

    DIRECTION: Ravi Jadhav
    GENRE: Musical

REVIEW : Director Ravi Jadhav, who has some outstanding Marathi films to his name (like Natarang), captures the pulse of Mumbai and the city’s buzzing chawl culture in Banjo with simplicity and a dash of humour. His characters exude the quintessential middle-class values, which are bound to resonate with many. The underprivileged are not conditioned to dream big, so even their wishes are realistic. One of the characters innocently asks a waiter at a posh club, if he could take some champagne home for his father. Though commercial in approach, Jadhav keeps things unpretentious and thus relatable.

While the story is pretty formulaic (a bunch of street musicians making it big by winning against all odds), the execution and supporting performances are heartfelt. The music could have been better though. Addition of unnecessary drama and random events in the second half slows down the pace considerably, also making the film a tad cliched. The gorgeous Nargis overdoes the American accent but grows on you eventually.

And last but not the least, it’s time we play the dhol, tasha, tutari, lejhim and banjo for apla Riteish. Sporting a stylish man bun, it’s refreshing to see him break away from the usual multistarrers and play a slice-of-life, lead character in a Hindi film. A small-time extortionist cum musician, Taraat is all heart. Riteish essays this brash yet vulnerable character effortlessly, proving that he can hold a film on his own if given the right opportunity. The film’s cinematography is splendid as well.

If you are familiar with Mumbai’s working-class neighbourhoods, where the hearts of the poor are bigger than the pay packages of those residing in the mushrooming high-rises, you’ll be able to notice the beauty of Banjo. It also makes you respect the street musicians a little more.

  • Abu Dhabi Crown Prince to be chief guest on Republic Day

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince to be chief guest on Republic Day

New Delhi, Sep 2: In what can be seen as a bid to strengthen ties with the Gulf region that is home to a large population of expatriates, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day parade next year.

This was announced by External Affairs Spokesman Vikas Swarup here today.

“We hope to welcome a dear friend of India, HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, as Republic Day 2017 Chief Guest,” he tweeted.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mohamed bin Zayed expressed “thanks for the kind invitation to attend Indias Republic Day celebrations”.

“Our strong relations are deeply rooted in history. Our strategic cooperation has increased, driven by our mutual aspirations to develop it,” the Crown Prince said.

The visit of Al Nahyan, who is also the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE armed forces, is expected to give boost to bilateral ties in the key areas of trade and security.

It is also significant given that UAE is a close ally of Pakistan, whom India is trying to diplomatically isolate over the issue of cross-border terrorism.

During Modis visit in August last year, the two countries had condemned efforts, including by states, to use religion to justify, support and sponsor terrorism against other countries, or to use terrorism as instrument of state policy.

They had also decided to strengthen their cooperation in the area of counter-terrorism.

Trade is another important component of the bilateral ties as UAE is Indias third largest trading partner after China and the United States. Bilateral trade between UAE and India is around USD 60 billion.

There are also more than 2.6 million Indians live in the UAE and their annual remittance is estimated to be around USD14 billion.

The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

This year, Modi visited Saudi Arabia where he was conferred with that Gulf nation’s highest civilian honour, the King Abdulaziz Sash, and then Iran soon thereafter.

The last time a leader from the Gulf region graced the Republic Day as chief guest was when then King of Saudi Arabia Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud visited India in 2006.

“Angelina has blocked all incoming text messages and also Brad’s numbers,” informed a source. Also claiming that the 52-year-old actor is disappointed with the ‘public’ breakup as it would affect their children tremendously, a friend reported the ‘Mr And Mrs Smith’ actor to have been ‘shattered’ and ‘crying.’

“He is emotionally torn. Right now, he is devastated. He still loved Angelina and would have preferred they fight to make the marriage work,” the friend said. • India ratifies historic Paris climate deal at #UN

India ratifies historic Paris climate deal at #UN

United Nations, Oct 2 (PTI) India today ratified the landmark Paris climate deal, giving a significant push for the deal to enter into force by the end of this year.

Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin (@AkbaruddinIndia – Twitter) handed over India’s Instrument of Ratification to the Paris Agreement under the convention on Climate Change today, coinciding with the International Day of Non Violence.

The day also commemorates the Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who epitomized a lifestyle with the smallest carbon footprint.

With this India, the worlds third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, became the 62nd country to ratify the Agreement taking the cumulative emission of the countries that have ratified the Agreement so far to 51.89%.

This significant contribution towards the early entry into force of the Paris Agreement underlines Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s commitment to global cause of environmental protection and climate justice and reaffirms India’s responsive leadership in addressing the impact of climate change.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon lauded India’s “climate leadership”, saying India’s ratification of the Paris Climate Change agreement moves the world an “important step closer” toward achieving the goal of entering the landmark deal into force this year.

In his message for the International Day of Non-violence, marked every year on Gandhis birth anniversary, Ban said there is no better way to commemorate Gandhi and his legacy for people and the planet than with India submitting its instrument of ratification to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

“I warmly congratulate India for its climate leadership, and for building on the strong momentum we see from all corners of the globe for the agreement to enter into force as quickly as possible this year. Indias ratification of the agreement moves the world an important step closer toward achieving that goal,” Ban said in the message.

He called on all countries to complete their domestic processes for ratification and also strive in all activities to achieve progress through non-violence.

The UN chief said the commitment to sustainable living that Gandhi emphasised on is reflected in a “momentous way” as India is depositing its instrument of ratification to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

“India keeps its promise. On Gandhijis birth anniversary, we deposit the instrument of ratification of Paris Agreement on climate change,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

Syed Akbaruddin had on Friday said that India had played a “key role” in the negotiations and finalisation of the Paris agreement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a “personal commitment” to the climate deal.

Indo-American Press Club holds presidential debate in Houston

HOUSTON, TX (TIP): The Indo-American Press Club -Houston Chapter recently organized and hosted a debate and discussion on the upcoming Presidential election. Its purpose was to impart political education, enhance political awareness and increase participation of the Indian community in the political process. The presidential discussion with representatives from both the Trump and Hillary campaigns, held at Stafford Civic Center in Houston on Sept 11, was attended by a large number of Indian Americans, political personalities and community leaders. IAPC is a non-profit formed three years ago to create a common platform for media professionals in USA and Canada, thus giving them a powerful voice in the media world and larger society.

The event also worked as a soft launch of IAPC’s Houston chapter with Easo Jacob as its president. In his welcome remarks, he said, the presidential debate followed the motto of the press club, which is “Informed Action Promotes Change.”

After Mike ONeill, President of The Houston Press Club, opened the event, Cyriac Scaria, IAPC National Committee member, spoke on “Path to Mainstream,” stressing why Indian Americans should shed their shyness about politics and participate actively in the process.

Some of the dignitaries present included Hon. Judge Joel Clouser, HCC Trustee Neeta Sane, Ken Mathew – Pro Tem Mayor of Stafford, Dr. Kendell Baker -State Representative Candidate, Len Swanson -Advisor to Donald Trump, Democratic Party Fort Bend County Chairwoman Cynthia Gyn, and State Representative Candidate Sarah DeMerchant.

The debate was moderated by Attorney Scott Brasington. Republican side included Dr. Kendell Baker, Dr. Nik Nikam, Ramesh Cherivirala, Sangeeta Dua, and Len Swanson, and Democratic side was helmed by State Representative Ron Raynolds, KP George, Amee Patel, and veteran journalist Jawahar Malhotra.

The entertainment during the evening was provided by singer Grady Long who sang several songs in different languages.

The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by Babu Jesudas of IAPC, and was followed by dinner. Lakshmi Peter emceed the event.

Afterwards, Len Swanson said in an email: “I felt I was successful in presenting and discussing privately with key Indian leaders and other guests as to why the GOP had more to offer to the Indian community given our mutual conservative and entrepreneurial values than the Democratic Socialists.

“In fact I was the only speaker who was applauded mid-way through my presentation as I hit upon the key points that the Indian community here in Houston did come to the US ‘legally’ not ‘illegally’, that their community is especially a very successful model of ‘How to’ that other communities should emulate.”

Media Conference: The Indo-American Press Club is holding its 3rd Media Conference during the Columbus Day weekend (Oct 8-10, 2016) at the Hilton Stamford Hotel and Executive Meeting Center in Stamford, Connecticut. IAPC’s chairman is Ginsmon Zacharia and current President is Parveen Chopra.

Indian Doctor Dr Kamal Ahuja Offers Britain’s First ‘Order A Daddy’ App

London: An Indian-origin doctor from a UK sperm bank has launched a new mobile app for women who can browse and pick the right candidate online to father her child.

Dr Kamal Ahuja, scientific director of the London Sperm Bank, believes the app is the first-of-its-kind in the world.

“You make all the transactions online, like you do anything else these days. This allows a woman who wants to get a sperm donor to gain control in the privacy of her own home and to choose and decide in her own time. We think this is the first-of-its-kind in the world,” he was quoted as saying by the ‘The Sunday Times’.

The London Sperm Bank’s app – dubbed ‘order a daddy’ app by the newspaper – allows women to order sperm just as they would carry out any other online transaction.

It allows women to browse for potential fathers by choosing a donor with desired physical characteristics such as hair and eye colour or height.

They can also filter applicants by educational level and occupation and read a description of their personality and create an online wish-list.

A payment of 950 pounds, made via the app, is required for a donor’s sperm sample, which is then delivered to the fertility clinic where the woman is being treated.

About half of Britain’s IVF clinics, including private and the UK’s state-funded National Health Service (NHS) institutions, are understood to have registered to use the service.

The app is legal and meets the requirements of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), Britain’s IVF regulator.
