  • A History making Forever Diwali Stamp

A History making Forever Diwali Stamp

History was created when on October 5, USPS representatives officially unveiled the Diwali Stamp at the Indian Consulate in New York. It took almost seven years for a determined lady to achieve what appeared unachievable to many before her. The crusader was not deterred by numerous obstacles and setbacks which were formidable enough to break any body with lesser courage. But here was a Ranju Batra who felt it was unjust that while other religions had their festivals recognized by the USPS and a stamp issued to commemorate them, there was no such commemorative stamp for one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world. She decided that this injustice was to be undone.

While Ranju was President of the Association of Indians in America, New York Chapter which organizes the now famous South Street Seaport Diwali, way back in 2010-2011, she conferred with Ambassador Hardeep Puri on the subject of having the USPS issue a Diwali Stamp. Ambassador Puri encouraged her as also her husband Ravi Batra. Once she started, there was no stopping her. She made the Diwali Stamp her song for ever. She got lawmakers together to introduce a legislation in the Congress. She spent hours, days, weeks, months cajoling community leaders in to supporting her crusade. Some did. Many did not. But she remained undeterred. When she got an opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she made a request that he use his good offices with President Obama to have the Diwali Stamp issued to commemorate the festival of millions in the US and billions in India. She even made a request to President Obama.

Seven years is a long period to tire any one. But not Ranju who succeeded, ultimately in fulfilling her dream and brought honor and cheer to billions of Indians across the world. They say in Persian “Himmate marda, madade Khuda”-God helps those who help themselves. Three Cheers to Diwali Stamp;three cheers to Indians everywhere and surely, many more cheers to Ranju Batra.

  • AARZU: Indian flavor at its best, in Freehold, New Jersey

AARZU: Indian flavor at its best, in Freehold, New Jersey

FREEHOLD, NJ (TIP): Renowned Restaurateur Kamal Arora , Archana Sharma and Arora Hospitality Group’s latest culinary venture, Aarzu Restaurant, opens its doors to the community to celebrate its first-ever Diwali season this week. “Aarzu” is a wish that has translated into a delectable and indulgent fine dining experience that serves Authentic Indian food in Freehold, New Jersey.

An extension of Arora Hospitality, one of the best things about this restaurant food is that you can be astonished by its simplicity, yet exquisite taste. By virtue of using fresh ingredients and letting food speak for itself, a good chef does well when his or her fingerprints are hard to find in a simple dish. A great chef makes simple entree’ undeniably their own. Their Head Chef ‘Sharvan’ is a virtuosic professional, able to express many nuances within each bite of a variety of food.

Everything on the menu’s many pages gets an attractive yet explanatory introduction and all in all its looks good. Mostly, as it is, one can start with delightful and healthy appetizers. For ex: Smoked Garbanzo Bhel and Lasooni Lotus Root are almost as soft as cake crumbs and flavorful respectively. Both are exceptional and are not too heavy on a stomach. The warm and tasty Gobi Saag was a quick respite from the weather on a cold windy day. The garlic Naans landed the uppercuts, as they were as fresh as a wheat crop in a field.

Moving away from the trend is what they have for dessert. ‘Phirni’ was the real surprise with an extremely soothing flavor. Simply great! And the Rose Ice cream has the tactful taste of sealing the dinner chapter in a neat way.

The food is presented and arranged with an attention to ‘Visual Flavor’ which is an important concept in food arrangement at an any restaurant. The creative presentation is enough to entice customers and hence in turn it makes the guests to “see” the flavors. Aarzu offers an interesting selection throughout the menu, by introducing a number of different techniques for a variety of flavors, colors, and textures. There is enough on the card for vegetarian and non-vegetarian customers. At Aarzu you can have fine dining experience with Casual, spacious seating. Staff is extremely patient and focused, and quick to respond. In addition to their palatable gourmet, Aarzu has a private banquet hall with private entrance that can accommodate about 150 guests. • 70% of Indian American voters prefer Hillary Clinton, 7% Donald Trump: Survey

70% of Indian American voters prefer Hillary Clinton, 7% Donald Trump: Survey

DALLAS, TX (TIP): Asian Indian or Indian American registered voters are overwhelmingly Democratic, with a whopping 70% of the community favoring Hillary Clinton, according to a new National Asian American Survey (NAAS). Donald Trump, in fact, falls into third place with only a meager 7% support for him, outstripped by support for ‘other candidate and leaners’ which shows at 9% support.

Asian Americans overwhelmingly Democrats, shows new survey

In line with that, Asian-American registered voters are increasingly identifying as Democrats, with a whopping 11 percentage points increase since 2012, over those in the community who are registered Republicans, according to the survey. Interestingly, Asian-Indian or Indian American community led both the 2012 and the 2016  polls with overwhelming support for Democrats. While in 2012 it was 68% Democratic, with only 10%shown as Republicans, in 2016, 71%registered voters are seen as Democrats vs. 13% as Republicans, for a net gain of one percent. The 2016 survey, released last week, also found that 59 percent of respondents favor Hillary Clinton in this year’s presidential election while only 16 percent prefer Donald Trump – 26 percent are either undecided or favor a third-party candidate, reported fivethirtyeight.com A whopping 79% Indian Americans view Trump unfavorably, with 67% viewing him very unfavorably, the survey found. The NAAS sampled 2,238 Asian-Americans and 305 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders.

Polling Asian-Americans can be difficult, the report said. Asian-Americans have one of the highest rates of limitedEnglish proficiency, and about 3 in 4 are foreign-born. For these reasons, 45 percent of the interviews in the NAAS were conducted in one of nine languages other than English (Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Japanese, Hindi, Hmong, Cambodian).

Indeed, “Asian-American” is a broad group that includes many different ethnicities with distinct political traditions. Vietnamese-Americans have historically leaned more Republican than other Asian-American subgroups, for example; Indian-Americans and Japanese-Americans have leaned more Democratic. Still, Democrats have made substantial gains across most ethnic subgroups of Asian-Americans, noted fivethirtyeight.com.

In the aftermath of the 2012 election, the Republican National Committee (RNC) released a report calling on the party to do a better job connecting with minority populations. The RNC hired a nationalfield director, Stephen Fong, and a national communications director, Jason Chung, to conduct outreach to Asian-American voters. Karthick Ramakrishnan, director of the NAAS, said in an interview that the GOP was “trying to project this image of the Republican Party that was more open, that is more tolerant, that is trying to do significant outreach to the community.”

Ramakrishnan said the GOP appeared to be making strides in some areas, pointing to the 2014 election of several Asian-American Republicans to seats in California’s state legislature. But he said that the polarizing nature of this year’s GOP presidential nominee seems to be nullifying any gains Republicans might have made and that support among Asian-Americans for the GOP may be lower now than in 2012.

In previous years, Ramakrishnan said, surveys of Asian-Americans showed larger differences in political preferences between subgroups and between regions of the country. “One way you could put it is that Trump is nationalizing the election for Asian-Americans,” he said.

Trump’s effect on the concerns of Asian-Americans may be evident in an open-ended NAAS question that asks respondents to name the “most important problem facing the United States.” Ten percent of registered voters in the NAAS said “racism or racial discrimination,” the third-most-common answer, behind the economy and national security. Trump has been criticized for anti-immigrant and racist rhetoric, including saying that Mexican immigrants are rapists, and for proposing to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country.

  • Hillary Clinton leads in National Polls

Hillary Clinton leads in National Polls

WASHINGTON (TIP): Hillary Clinton has built a formidable lead over Donald Trump in terms of opinion poll’s percentage points, but, poll numbers are swinging in Battleground states as Nevada and Florida change status back to “battleground” from “lean Democratic” and now maintain their traditional toss-up status.

Leaving the battleground states undecided for now, CNN’s electoral outlook has Clinton at 272 electoral votes from states either solidly or leaning in her direction. Trump has a total of 179 electoral votes from the states either solidly or leaning in his direction. 87 electoral votes currently up for grabs in the battleground states will decide this head to head race regardless of what Opinion Polls suggest – remember opinion polls generally tend to have a sample size of about 1,000 people or more and can track movement and general opinion well.

But the US election is won and lost in swing states and decided by the electoral college system.

ratingThis means that polls in states that look like they could vote for either candidate play an integral role in election projections.

As on October 27, most polls here in the US and in UK speak of Clinton’s lead, and a comfortable one, over Trump.

The Upshot gives Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee for president, a 92 percent chance of winning, compared to Republican candidate Donald Trump’s 8 percent. While Trump could still win, The Upshot says: “Mrs. Clinton’s chance of losing is about the same as the probability that an N.F.L. kicker misses a 31-yard field goal.” According to The Upshot, the chance of Clinton winning the election has increased steadily since the beginning of the month: On October 1, Clinton had a 76 percent chance of winning compared to Trump’s 24 percent.

On October 26th night, FiveThirtyEight ‘s Nate Silver wrote that Trump has “probably narrowed his deficit against Clinton,” but by too little to see any major shift. FiveThirtyEight ‘s election forecast on October 27 predicted that, nationally, Clinton will take 84.4 percent of the vote to Trump’s 15.6 percent. Meanwhile, 46 percent of voters in a YouGov poll published October 27 said they intend to vote for Clinton, while 41 percent said they will cast their vote for Trump.

Real Clear Politics had Clinton leading Trump by 5.4 points on Thursday, a slight dip from the same time a week ago, when she was up by 6.1 points. The average from Thursday’s polls had Clinton with 48.6 percent support and Trump with 42.7 percent.

Outlier of The Day: Evan McMullin! According to a SurveyMonkey poll from Utah published on October 27, 29 percent of voters say they will choose McMullin, a conservative independent candidate, the same percentage who say they intend to vote for Clinton. Trump is ahead in Utah by a narrow margin, at 32 percent. McMullin, who is Mormon, has polled highly in the state, where he’s seen as a viable alternative to the brashness and unpredictability of Trump.

61 charged in India-based IRS Impersonation Scam

WASHINGTON (TIP): The U.S. Justice Department charged 61 people on Thursday, October 27, with taking part in a scam involving India-based call centers where people impersonated Internal Revenue Service, immigration and other federal officials and demanded payments for non-existent debts.

The scam, which had operated since 2013, targeted at least 15,000 people who lost more than $300 million, the department said in a statement.

The defendants, who were indicted by a grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas on Oct. 19, included 32 people at five Indian call centers and 24 people in nine U.S. states, the statement said.

The indictment said the operators of the call centers in Ahmedabad, in the Indian state of Gujarat, “threatened potential victims with arrest, imprisonment, fines or deportation if they did not pay taxes or penalties to the government.”

Payments by victims were laundered by a U.S. network of co-conspirators using prepaid debit cards or wire transfers, often using stolen or fake identities, the statement said.

The call centers also ran scams in which victims were offered short-term loans or grants on condition of providing good-faith deposits or payment of a processing fee, it said. The investigation involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Treasury, Homeland Security, U.S. Secret Service and police officials, the Justice Department said.

Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush advocates for ‘Proper Understanding of Gender Equality’

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush, UN Women’s Advocate for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in India, strongly believes that to bring gender equality in the society we have to first understand what equality means. She spoke of this equality beginning from home where a girl is given the same status and opportunities as a boy. The film director, classical dancer and writer, who was appointed UN Women’s Advocate in August this year, was delivering a speech at UN Women’s Headquarter in NYC on October 27. America Tamil Sangam and UN Women jointly organized the event. In his welcome speech America Tamil Sangam President Prakash Swamy described how extremely talented Aishwaryaa maintains her simple, down to earth approach despite being daughter of India’s biggest star Rajinikanth and wife of another superstar Dhanush. He also highlighted Aishwaryaa’s social awareness and urge to help people in distress that had made her ideal for the advocate’s job.

“As a first step in our march towards equality, we would need to understand what equality means. Now I understand that this has been debated and continues to be debated by philosophers, politicians ad nauseam”, said Aishwaryaa. “And I understand we are yet to fully understand what equality means.” She also admitted that the present situation is grim but it has a solution too. “While an understanding of what is equality is important, but to wait or to make half-hearted attempts until we fully understand, would result in future generations looking back at us and wondering what sort of society did we live in! And we should be conscious of what sort of legacy are we likely to leave behind.”

UN Women Deputy Executive Director Lakshmi Puri briefed the audience about the transformations UN wants to bring to society with their vision for the 2030 Agenda and Planet 50-50 by 2030. UN Women Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka also delivered a brief speech where she expressed hope thatAishwaryaa with her genuine commitmentto the causewill be a true game changer to make this planet equal for men and women.

Surat Diamond Merchant’s Diwali Gift to Employees: Over 400 Flats, 1000 Cars

SURAT, INDIA (TIP): Known for his benevolent Diwali gifts to his employees, Surat-based billionaire diamond merchant Savji Dholakia has this year too kept over a thousand cars and 400 flats for his well-performing staffers with the company bearing part of the monthly instalments.

Mr Dholakia, who owns the Hare Krishna Exports, has gifted 400 flats and 1,260 cars as Diwali bonuses to his employees.

However, the company will bear a part, Rs. 5,000, of the loan instalments on the flats and the cars for five years. “We have selected 1,716 employees as the best performers this year. We are arranging for houses for those who already own cars, while those who don’t have a four-wheeler will get one,” Mr Dholakia told IANS.

He said the 400 flats each of 1,100 square feet would be allotted in a housing scheme of the company itself. “The flats would come dirt cheap at Rs. 15 lakh and the monthly instalment, which the employee will start paying after five years will be Rs. 11,000,” he said. “The foreign secretary summoned the Indian high commissioner today and conveyed the decision of the government of Pakistan to declare Mr. Surjeet Singh, an official of the Indian high commission, as persona non-grata,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement. “The activities of Surjeet Singh in Islamabad were in violation of Vienna Convention and established diplomatic norms,” the statement said. “The Indian high commission has been asked to make urgent necessary arrangements for Surjeet Singh and his family to leave Pakistan by 29 October 2016,” it said.

  • Supposed ‘Burial Slab’ of Jesus Christ Uncovered for First Time in Centuries

Supposed ‘Burial Slab’ of Jesus Christ Uncovered for First Time in Centuries

JERUSALEM (TIP): A stone slab that many Christians believe once held the body of Jesus Christ after the crucifixion has been unveiled for the first time in centuries.

National Geographic, which was filming the restoration work at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, said the marble that encased the slab since at least 1555 was removed as part of the project.

“We were surprised by the amount of fill material beneath it,” Fredrik Hiebert, archaeologist-in-residence at the National Geographic Society, told the organization’s website. “It will be a long scientific analysis, but we will finally be able to see the original rock surface on which, according to tradition, the body of Christ was laid.”

The church is one of the most revered sites in Christianity, and includes the location traditionally believed to have been the scene of the crucifixion as well as the tomb. It’s also highly controversial, as the location was not identified until centuries after the events depicted in the New Testament.

Today, the operation and maintenance of the church is a tense, “status quo” arrangement between several Christian denominations, including the Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. At times, fights have broken out between these sects. Such disagreements have allowed parts of the facility to fall into disrepair, and last year the Israeli government temporarily shut down the church over fears of a possible collapse.

Earlier this year, the factions agreed to a nine-month renovation to fix the crumbling chapel that was built over the revered site, and to make other long-overdue repairs. Removing the marble that encased the slab was part of that process, and will be featured in a National Geographic Channel “Explorer” episode in November.

“We are at the critical moment for rehabilitating the Edicule” (which encloses the tomb), Antonia Moropoulou of the National Technical University of Athens told National Geographic. “The techniques we’re using to document this unique monument will enable the world to study our findings as if they themselves were in the tomb of Christ.”

India, Pak seek recall of High commission staffers

Amid growing strain in relations, India and Pakistan today declared a staffer each at their High Commissions in New Delhi and Islamabad persona non-grata and sought their recall in tit-for-tat action after Indian police busted an ISI-run spy ring involving an employee of the Pakistani mission.

Mehmood Akhtar, who worked in the visa section of the High Commission and had diplomatic immunity, was procuring critical details including those about deployment of BSF personnel along the Indo-Pak border from two other accomplices who were arrested in Delhi, police said.

Described as the kingpin of the spy ring, 35-year-old Akhtar belongs to the Baloch regiment of Pakistani Army and was on deputation to spy agency ISI since 2013, investigators said, adding they also probing possible involvement of more people from the Pakistani mission.

Akhtar and two others — identified as Subhash Jangir and Maulana Ramzan– were picked up from Delhi Zoo yesterday at around 10 AM. Akhtar was released after around three hours of interrogation as he enjoys diplomatic immunity. A fourth person Shoaib, who is a Jodhpur-based passport and visa agent, was detained by Rajasthan police this evening and was being brought to Delhi.

India asked Akhtar to leave the country within 48 hours.

“The Pakistan High Commission has been informed that Mehmood Akhtar and his family must return to Pakistan by October 29. The Foreign Secretary also strongly conveyed to the Pak High Commissioner that the Pak High Commission must ensure that none of its members indulge in activities inimical to India, or behave in a manner that is incompatible with their diplomatic status,” Swarup said.

In swift tit-for-tat action, Pakistan also declared an Indian High Commission official as persona non-grata and asked him to leave the country within 48 hours.

A Pakistan Foreign Office statement said the decision was conveyed to Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale who was summoned to Foreign Ministry in Islamabad.

“The Foreign Secretary (Aizaz Chaudhry) summoned the Indian High Commissioner today and conveyed the decision of the Government of Pakistan to declare Surjeet Singh, an official of the Indian High Commission, as persona non-grata,” the statement said.

The Foreign Secretary expressed deep concern over the activities of the Indian official that were in violation of the Vienna Convention and the established diplomatic norms, it said.

The Indian High Commission has been asked to make urgent necessary arrangements for Singh and his family to leave Pakistan by October 29.

  • Ivanka Trump To Celebrate Diwali At Hindu Temple

Ivanka Trump To Celebrate Diwali At Hindu Temple

In a move to woo minorities, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s daughter  Ivanka Trump will celebrate Diwali with Indian-Americans during her visit to the Rajdhani Temple at Chantilly on Wednesday, campaign officials and community leaders said.

Ivanka will celebrate the Diwali festival at a Hindu temple in the crucial swing state of Virginia with the members of the Indian-American community, who have traditionally supported the Democratic party in the US elections.

This is the first time a family member of one of the two top presidential candidates is visiting a Hindu temple.

Last week, Trump attended a charity event organised by Republican Hindu Council to raise funds for Kashmiri Pandits and Hindu victims of terrorism in Bangladesh. This was also the first time a presidential candidate attended an Indian-American event. It was attended by more than 5,000 people.

The visit of Ivanka, 34, a successful businesswoman and a key figure of the Trump campaign, to the Rajdhani Temple would “go a long way in breaking the stereotype,” that the campaign “represents only angry white voters,” said Rajesh Gooty, an Indian-American community leader in Virginia.

“This is a big positive for the community,” he said. Inaugurated in 2000, the Rajdhani Temple is the oldest temple in Loudon County of Virginia, which has experienced the fastest growth of Indian-Americans in the past decade.

In addition to recognising the significant role the Indian-American community plays in the US and embracing its cultural and religious diversity, the Trump Campaign’s move to send Ivanka to a Hindu temple is seen as an effort to woo this ethnic community in the November 8 presidential election.

The results of the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections have shown that whoever wins Loudon County wins Virginia. The county in the past 16 years has seen significant growth of the Indian-American community, mainly on account of the emergence of an IT corridor near the Dulles Airport.

There were 1,200 Indian-Americans in 2000, which increased to 12,000 in 2010. The number is estimated to have jumped to 30,000 in 2016. The neighboring Fairfax County too has an estimated 20,000 strong Indian-American community members.

Indian-Americans have traditionally supported Democratic Party. But the Trump Campaign, which had withdrawn from the state several weeks ago, feel its latest move would help them penetrate the traditional vote bank of the Democratic party.

The Kern County District Attorney’s Office filed misdemeanor charges against David Scott Hook from Bakersfield for allegedly accosting Balmeet Singh outside a California Avenue restaurant last month, cursing him, threatening him and drenching him with a drink.

Mr Singh, while narrating the incident, had said that he and his friends were out to dinner at the Habit Burger in Bakersfield, California. He decided to step outside of the restaurant to make a phone call and that is when the incident unfolded.

Mr Singh said in the middle of his conversation, a man walked out of Blaze Pizza and headed straight toward him.

“He says you’re trying to blow up this country, I should kill you. I’m going to kill you right now. And he used a lot of curse words and he seemed very angry,” Singh was quoted as saying by KERO-TV.

Mr Singh said he yelled back at the man that he was a racist and he was the problem. Singh said the man continued to yell and then threw a drink at him.

According to a statement from the District Attorney’s office, Hook was charged on Saturday with one count of interference with the exercise of a civil right and one count of battery.

Kern County District Attorney Lisa Green was quoted by The Bakersfield Californian as saying that the civil rights charge falls under the legal category of a hate crime.

“It is alleged defendant David Hook threw liquid on another individual because he appeared to be of a different religion or race,” the statement said.

The alleged attacker “said I was a threat to the country I grew up in, the country I was born in,” Mr Singh had told hundreds who gathered last week at a gurdwara in southwest Bakersfield.

The event, which included several guest speakers, was called a “dialogue against hate.”

In a conversation with a Bakersfield Police Department investigator, Singh said he was told the man was identified and questioned. The man told police he thought Mr Singh was a Muslim.

  • Women to Get Access to Inner Sanctum of Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai

Women to Get Access to Inner Sanctum of Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai

NEW DELHI (TIP) – Women devotees will have access up to the sanctum sanctorum of Sufi saint Haji Ali in Mumbai, the Haji Ali Dargah Trust told the Supreme Court on Monday, October 24.

The trust told the apex court that it was ready to implement the Bombay High Court order and will create a separate way to facilitate women devotees’ access to the Dargah.

As senior counsel Gopal Subramaniam appearing for the Haji Ali Dargah Trust sought two weeks’ time to create the way, the bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice L. Nageswara Rao, describing the development as positive, said: “You can have four weeks’ time if you are going to strictly comply with the (Bombay) High Court order.”

Subramaniam took the court through the map of the Dargah to tell it that the trust has decided to relocate the treasury boxes in which the offerings by the devotees are kept.

He also told the court that in the past, women were allowed access to the sanctum sanctorum of the Dargah, but for some logistical problems, the restrictions were imposed. “The Trust in 2012 prohibited women from entering the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine.”

The Haji Ali Dargah Trust had approached the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court order that directed the trust to allow women devotees full access to the sanctum sanctorum of the Dargah.

The Bombay High Court had on Aug. 26 permitted the entry of women right up to the restricted grave area of the famous Saint.

However, the Bombay High Court, while ruling that women can go up to the sanctum sanctorum of the Dargah, had put the operation of its verdict on hold, giving time to the Haji Ali Trust – managing the shrine affairs – to approach the Supreme Court.

The High Court verdict had come on a public interest litigation filed by Noorjehan Niaz, Zakia Soman and others.

This shrine of the Sufi Saint in Mumbai was built in 1431.

  • Why exactly Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton ‘NASTY WOMAN’

Why exactly Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton ‘NASTY WOMAN’

WASHINGTON (TIP): What exactly did Hillary Clinton say that riled her Republican opponent Donald Trump so much?

She more than hinted that far from being worried about “crooked Hillary” -as Trump calls her – people should be focussing on a crooked, tax-dodging Trump.

Clinton was talking about policy to do with social security for an aging America.

“My Social Security payroll contribution will go up, as will Donald’s, assuming he can’t figure out how to get out of it,” she said.

The reference was obvious. If Trump wriggled out of paying taxes before, he could most certainly do it with Social Security taxes in the future.

Trump didn’t like what she said one bit.

“Such a nasty woman,” he retorted.

And that comment was very likely the final nail in the coffin of his campaign. “This kind of direct insult is very unusual on the debate stage” wrote Vox, a political news site.

What could have led to such a Trump meltdown? Perhaps it was the verbal pounding Clinton delivered throughout the 90-odd minute third debate.

Before a look at some of Clinton’s slam dunks, here’s a look at Trump’s own goal.

Trump – “Nobody has more respect for women than I do. Nobody.”

    Clinton’s knockout punches On Jobs

“Donald has bought Chinese steel and aluminum. In fact, the Trump Hotel right here in Las Vegas was made with Chinese steel. So he goes around with crocodile tears about how terrible it is, but he has given jobs to Chinese steelworkers, not American steelworkers.”

On Trump constantly deriding her 30 years in public life

“He raised the 30 years of experience, so let me just talk briefly about that. You know, back in the 1970s, I worked for the Children’s Defense Fund. And I was taking on discrimination against African-American kids in schools. He was getting sued by the Justice Department for racial discrimination in his apartment buildings.

In the 1980s, I was working to reform the schools in Arkansas. He was borrowing $14 million from his father to start his businesses. In the 1990s, I went to Beijing and I said women’s rights are human rights. He insulted a former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado, called her an eating machine.”

(At this point Trump interjects with “Give me a break.” Unfazed, Clinton goes on)

“And on the day when I was in the Situation Room, monitoring the raid that brought Osama bin Laden to justice, he was hosting the “Celebrity Apprentice.” So I’m happy to compare my 30 years of experience, what I’ve done for this country, trying to help in every way I could, especially kids and families get ahead and stay ahead, with your 30 years, and I’ll let the American people make that decision.”

    On Women

“In the last debate, we heard Donald talking about what he did to women. And after that, a number of women have come forward saying that’s exactly what he did to them. Now, what was his response? Well, he held a number of big rallies where he said that he could not possibly have done those things to those women because they were not attractive enough for them to be assaulted.”

(Here, Trump says “I did not say that. I did not say that… I did not say that” and the Moderator Chris Wallace, of Fox News has to jump in with “Her two minutes — sir, her two minutes. Her two minutes.”) Clinton goes on.

“He (Trump) went on to say, “Look at her. I don’t think so.” About another woman, he said, “That wouldn’t be my first choice.” He attacked the woman reporter writing the story, called her “disgusting,” as he has called a number of women during this campaign. Donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger. He goes after their dignity, their self-worth, and I don’t think there is a woman anywhere who doesn’t know what that feels like. So we now know what Donald thinks and what he says and how he acts toward women. That’s who Donald is.”

On Trump being a sore loser

“You know, every time Donald thinks things are not going in his direction, he claims whatever it is, is rigged against him. The FBI conducted a year-long investigation into my e-mails. They concluded there was no case; he said the FBI was rigged. He lost the Iowa caucus. He lost the Wisconsin primary. He said the Republican primary was rigged against him. Then Trump University gets sued for fraud and racketeering; he claims the court system and the federal judge is rigged against him. There was even a time when he didn’t get an Emmy for his TV program three years in a row and he started tweeting that the Emmys were rigged against him.”

On Trump’s comment that Putin has no respect for Clinton

“Well, that’s because he’d rather have a puppet as president of the United States.” (PTI)

  • College Application Week

    College Application Week

This week, high schools across New York City and State are participating in College Application Week from October 17-21, a statewide initiative around college planning and application activities in an effort to increase the number of low-income and first generation students applying to college.

For the first time since it began four years ago, a record 365 high schools across every borough are participating in College Application Week, reaching more than 53,000 students. Schools are providing a series of events ranging from workshops and panels on the path to college for 9th graders, to college and financial aid application sessions for 12th graders.

As the daughter of Puerto Rican born parents who moved to the Bronx knowing very little English and the first person in my family to go to college, I know how difficult the college process can be – especially filling out college applications and financial aid forms. But I also know that whether or not our young people go to college shouldn’t be decided by what neighborhood they live in or what language they or their parents speak.

Our goal is to reach and inform every parent, grandparent and guardian about the college process, remind all our students that they can pursue college, and give them and their families the support they need to do that.

At the numerous town halls and family events I’ve visited across the city, I’ve seen families eager to get information about the college process in all grade levels. Parents and grandparents today want the same thing my parents once wanted for my siblings and me – a shot at success.

That’s why here at the DOE – teachers, school staff, and administrators are all committed to Equity and Excellence for All, a range of initiatives that we are implementing through a variety of programs like College Access for All, which works to improve the college process for all students and families and put more students on the path to college.

By making the path to college accessible for everyone, we are going to make a real difference for students and families.

We are removing barriers and giving our students and families the support they need to go on to college and careers – from making the SAT available for free during the school day, to eliminating the CUNY application fee, to increasing the number of AP courses, to bringing a record number of schools into College Application Week this year. College Access for All will also ensure that, by the 2018-19 school year, every student will have the resources and support at their high school to graduate with an individual college and career plan.

Our schools will continue to share information about College Access for All as we move forward, and I am excited to work with parents as partners as we make these initiatives a reality. Additional information on College Application Week and college planning tools and resources for students, families, and educators are available at: http://schools.nyc.gov/Offices/OPSR/colleg eapplicationweek

  • RHC Presents Trump as Lord Vishnu

RHC Presents Trump as Lord Vishnu

At the RHC event, Trump on Lotus as he is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Hillary and Sonia Gandhi attacking Adani’s $32,000 crore marketing product PM Narendra Modi, were put up by Vincent Bruno of “Hindus For Trump”, an unregistered fringe group with practically no membership!

Vincent is an American Christian converted to Hinduism, initially I thought he is the face of LGTB Hindu community but now it looks like he is trying to replace aging Francois Gautier, a Frenchman living in India who is earning his bread & butter since 1971 by instigating Hindus how they have been brutally killed by Muslim rulers for centuries.

Basically he is selling hate against Muslims to ignorant Hindus in the name of singing glory of Hinduism. It is very surprising that Hindus could not find an able Hindu among almost 1 Billion Hindus to guide them about their own religion or who can correctly interpret the famous Holy Hindu Texts that has everything in them to understand Hinduism. It is very surprising why no Hindu organization in USA or India has raised objections to Trump on Lotus.

pic-2-hillary-sonia-attacking-modiThe RHC event aka Music Masti & Dance aka Trump event on Saturday Oct. 15, 2016 at Raritan Center, Edison, NJ was a garbage event. The organizers aka Shalabh “Shalli” Kumar since mid-September has been changing the event concept by the hour and their current flier has no picture of Trump as well as no mention of charity event for Kashmiri Hindus & Bangladeshi Hindus. Initially it was all day family affair from 12 noon to 11 PM at PNC center on Sep 24, 2016 and then moved to Oct. 15, 2016 at the same venue and finally took place at a scaled down version at Raritan Center, Edison, NJ.

Right from day one they had no clarity what they intended to do. They had Sri Ravishankar as main attraction in the name of Hinduism. Main attraction for entertainment section was Shahid Kapoor from Bollywood & Ram Charan from South and exhibition on Kashmiri Pundits as well as history of Hinduism. Hinduism attraction Sri Ravishankar and Hollywood attraction Shahid Kapoor and Ram Charan were missing at Raritan. It looks like the organizers brought in C grade dancers from India that is the reason they added Ras Garba! These kinds of dancers are very much available in tri-state area and one does not have to import them from India.

Shalabh “Shalli” Kumar, a self-centered, self-proclaimed savior of Hinduism has been bragging to save Kashmiri & Bangladeshi Hindus and all the time praising his own achievements and declaring he will donate $1 million to them. When approached for help for a NJ Hindu boy, victim of prosecutorial misconduct, racial bias and fabricated charges this man ran away.

NJ govt. under pressure from Jewish leaders had put at that time 19-year old Hindu boy since April 2012 in solitary confinement for being a “mastermind in Swastika drawn outside 4 Synagogues”& an amateurish act of arson at 1 by his Spanish Friend Anthony Graziano in Dec 2011-Jan 2012.The Hindu boy was not even present in New Jersey when these incidents took place. He was hundreds of miles away in New Hampshire campaigning for Republican Presidential Candidate Ron Paul. If Shalli Kumar cannot help 1 Hindu how he can be expected to protect millions of Hindus! In every Press Conference he says RHC (Republican Hindu Coalition) is on the patterns of RJC (Republican Jewish Coalition) and RHC is staffed by practically their advisors and he is paying $100,000.00 every month to the staff just to make sure all the compliance and legal guide lines for RHC are strictly followed! He knows all the top Jewish leaders and more than 2 dozen top Republican leaders!

As far as I am concerned it was another crap event that our photo opportunist PHD (Photo Hungry Desi’s) self -declared community leaders have been doing for decades for self-promotion in the tri-state area in the name of India, Hindus, Hinduism and culture. There are more than a dozen India Day parades every year that are nothing but Mini Pushkar Melas to entertain locals.

None of our so called community leaders can spell or define culture, religion, politics and help the less fortunate or victims of injustice from the Indian community. None of them has ever taken any stand for victims of racial discrimination, injustice & police brutality. The Jewish leaders can punish & send for counseling an 8-year-old for drawing Swastika, can allow Jewish Police officers to pull a gun on 5 & 9-year-old Hindu children, can call the entire Indian community cockroaches, animals, illiterate & illegal, go home. They can allow their media & reporters to write almost a dozen articles to terrorize and humiliate an 11-year-old Hindu boy for demanding equal rights with Jews & Christians of his town from State Governor in public. They can let the community be humiliated and terrorized. These are our community leaders.

  • The end game: It is Nawaz Sharif versus Raheel Sharif

The end game: It is Nawaz Sharif versus Raheel Sharif

“Sharif’s relations with the army have been no less tumultuous in his third term. Like in the case of his appointment of Musharraf, Sharif erred in this third term by his appointment of Gen Raheel Sharif as army chief. He ignored the fact that General Raheel was a protégé of General Musharraf, who would challenge the PM’s efforts to have Musharraf tried for treason”, says the author – G Parthasarathy

Relations between Pakistan’s elected government and the country’s all-powerful military establishment become tense and coup prone whenever Nawaz Sharif is elected Prime Minister. This is rather ironical since Sharif entered politics with the blessings of the military in the early 1980s. The then military dictator General Zia-ul-Haq had sought the support of Nawaz’s father – industrialist and steel magnate, Mian Mohamed Sharif – to contribute for the establishment of a new Muslim League Party. General Zia’s military Governor in Lahore, Lt Gen Ghulam Gilani Khan, duly provided the support for Nawaz’s meteoric rise in politics. It was the backing of the military and the ISI chief, Lt Gen Asad Durrani, that enabled Sharif to cobble together an alliance of Islamist parties to prevail over Benazir Bhutto’s Peoples’ Party in 1992.

Sharif’s whimsical and authoritarian functioning thereafter led to serious differences with then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. The President was infuriated by the involvement of Sharif and his handpicked ISI chief Lt Gen Javed Nasir, in the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts. In the meantime, Sharif had developed an acrimonious relationship with his army chief, Gen Asif Nawaz, whose sudden death, attributed to arsenic poisoning, led to suspicions of Sharif’s involvement. Sharif was duly sacked by President Ishaq Khan, but briefly restored to office by the Supreme Court. The army chief, Gen Waheed Kakkar, forced both Sharif and the President, out of office shortly thereafter. Sharif’s relationship with the army was equally stormy in his second term. He peremptorily sacked his highly respected and apolitical army chief, Gen Jehangir Karamat. He was then ousted, jailed and exiled by Karamat’s successor, Pervez Musharraf, following differences over who was responsible for the Kargil fiasco.

Sharif’s relations with the army have been no less tumultuous in his third term. Like in the case of his appointment of Musharraf, Sharif erred in this third term by his appointment of Gen Raheel Sharif as army chief. He ignored the fact that General Raheel was a protégé of General Musharraf, who would challenge the PM’s efforts to have Musharraf tried for treason. Raheel Sharif predictably warned not only Nawaz, but also the Supreme Court, to back off from efforts to arrest and imprison Musharraf. His success in this effort only whetted Raheel’s appetite for taking over control of foreign policy, particularly relations with India, Afghanistan and even the US. China duly played on the General’s huge ego, by suggesting that it was the Pakistan army alone that could provide security for its $46 billion ‘One-Belt, One-Road’project.

Over the past three years, Raheel Sharif has taken over control of Pakistan’s foreign policy and the country’s internal security. He undermined the successful meeting that Nawaz had with Mr. Modi in Ufa by not permitting his DGMO to meet his Indian counterpart. He then undermined any chance of a rapprochement with India by the attack on the Pathankot air base, just after Mr. Modi had extended a hand of friendship by visiting Lahore during the wedding of Nawaz Sharif’s daughter. General Sharif has taken over the conduct of relations with Afghanistan to such an extent that when the Taliban, which has links with the ISI across the border, mounts terrorist strikes in Afghanistan, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani speaks to him rather than Nawaz Sharif !

General Sharif has shown similar disregard for constitutional norms on issues of internal security. He mounted a large-scale attack on the Pashtun tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, ruthlessly using artillery and air strikes after the Pakistani Taliban attack on the Army School in Peshawar. These operations, named Zarb-e-Azb, have rendered 8,00,000 tribals homeless, with an estimated 50,000 fleeing into Afghanistan. The entire operation was mounted in the face of opposition from both provincial and federal governments and without parliamentary approval. Raheel Sharif showed similar disregard for the views of these governments in his crackdown using the army-controlled Paramilitary Rangers to crush the MQM Party in Karachi. In the meantime, the brutal army repression in Balochistan continues. Despite being lauded as a “savior” by sections in Pakistan, Raheel Sharif has laid the foundations for prolonged unrest in three of Pakistan’s four provinces.

In these circumstances, the Nawaz government hit back with leaks to the Dawn newspaper, alleging that support of the army and ISI for groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, JeM and the Haqqani Network in Afghanistan had led to the diplomatic isolation of Pakistan, with even “all-weather friend” China expressing misgivings. This sentiment echoed widely in Pakistan’s parliament. The fact that India’s surgical strikes has been welcomed by the US and European parliament and that this has accompanied a boycott of the SAARC Summit in Islamabad, has given Nawaz Sharif more political space to act. He can now move to replace Raheel Sharif, who is due to retire on November 29, with a person of his choice. This will happen, unless, in the meantime, the Supreme Court acts against Nawaz Sharif on allegations of corruption and money laundering, or if a proposed agitation by Imran Khan paralyses Sharif’s government and invites army intervention. Nawaz Sharif may, therefore, name the new army chief well before November 29.

General Sharif will likely recommend the most senior officer, Lt Gen Zubair Hayat, presently the chief of general staff, to be the next army chief. Hayat is highly regarded and briefly headed the Strategic Plans Division of Pakistan’s Nuclear Command Authority. But Sharif will be wary of appointing a trusted buddy of General Sharif as the next chief. Hayat could well be “kicked upstairs” to the largely ceremonial, but senior-most post of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC). As the CJCSC heads the Nuclear Command Authority, Hayat’s appointment could be justified on the grounds of his earlier association with it. In that case, Sharif could look lower down the list and could possibly appoint Lt Gen Iqbal Ramaday, who has impeccable family credentials and is presently Corps Commander Bahawalpur, or Lt Gen Qamar Bajwa, said to be a competent officer, who evidently has reservations about extremist jehadi outfits. Bajwa presently holds the same post that Raheel Sharif did before he was appointed as army chief.

  • Presidential debates: Hillary has an edge but irrationality rules

Presidential debates: Hillary has an edge but irrationality rules

The US democratic machinery entered the home stretch for the Presidential elections slated for November 8 with the two leading candidates ending the three-phase debate on Wednesday, October 19.

The third debate was also replete with the by-now-familiar routine of name calling, innuendoes and interruptions. The experienced Hillary Clinton has emerged as more rationale and logical but in the universe of wisecracks and smart comebacks, Donald Trump kept his supporters interested in his prospects with a series of non-sequiturs laced with caustic personal comments. Opinion polls give Hillary a decisive lead but given his numerous comebacks despite being repeatedly cornered, Trump remains in the hunt.

The three general Presidential debates have failed to throw up a winner. The saving grace of the third debate held in the fun city of Los Angeles was its intermittent focus on substantive policy issues. For once, both candidates engaged with each other on immigration, gun control, national debt and abortion. The unpredictable, spontaneous and boorish Trump along with the suave, rehearsed, hard-as-nails Hillary have ensured an audience comeback for the Presidential debates. In the earlier two debates, the audience was none the wiser about the candidates’ ability to govern. Los Angeles was no exception though the New York and Washington debates left an even more bitter after-taste.

The third debate will be remembered for Trump’s “nasty woman” broadside against Hillary and his use of the term “bad Hombres”. This was a continuation of the previous two contests. All that remained in the end was bitter name calling. These have been poor advertisements for Brand US Democracy. Washington’s attempts to foist their version of democracy on Afghanistan, Iraq or Libya have spectacularly failed. The preponderance of personal showdowns in the debates suggests it is not much to talk about at home as well. The level is unlikely to get better as three weeks of take-no-prisoners style of campaigning lies ahead. More bitterness is in store as debates have exposed skeletons in the closet of both candidates. A cherished tradition since 1960, the debates have now become part of the US TV’s entertainment fixtures. It now needs a recast.

  • Pak freezes accounts of 5,100 terror suspects, including JeM Chief

Pak freezes accounts of 5,100 terror suspects, including JeM Chief

Islamabad, Oct 24 (TIP) : Pakistani authorities have frozen multiple bank accounts of suspects whose names were listed in the Fourth Schedule under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

These accounts carried net amount worth over Rs 400 million, revealed the officials, adding that names of around 1,200 suspects whose accounts were frozen by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) were listed in category ‘A*’ of the ATA, 1997, a term used for terrorists put on exceptional risk or high risk.

The name of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar has also been included in the list’s top suspects whose accounts were frozen by the SBP, officials of the Ministry of Interior and SBP said.

Masood Azhar’s name was also listed in category ‘A*’ of the 4th Schedule, revealed the officials who sought anonymity on the gravity of the issue. It happened since the government put the JeM chief under “protective custody” of security agencies after terrorists attacked the Pathankot Airbase, part of the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force, they further revealed.

“Following a request of the Ministry of Interior, we have frozen accounts of all top suspected terrorists, including Masood Azhar, son of Allah Bux,” confirmed a senior official of the SBP who is part of a team monitoring the progress pertaining to this matter.

The interior ministry sent three different lists of thousands of suspects, including kingpins of some proscribed organisations, The News quoted the official as saying.

Around 1,200 suspects whose accounts were frozen by SBP were listed in category A of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, a term used for terrorists put on exceptional risk or high risk, the paper reported.

Azhar has been included in the lists top suspects whose accounts were frozen by the SBP, said officials of the Ministry of Interior and SBP.

After the attack on the airbase in Pathankot in January, India had in February written to the UN calling for immediate action to list Azhar under the UN Sanctions Committee.

The National Counterterrorism Authority (Nacta) sent around 5,500 names to the SBP earlier this month, they said.

National Coordinator Nacta Ihsan Ghani confirmed that over 5,000 accounts of suspects have been frozen by the SBP.

“These accounts hold net amount worth Rs 400 million,” he said. About Azhars accounts, Ghani said he would revert with latest updates later this week.

“More than 3,078 accounts of suspects whose accounts were frozen belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata, 1,443 from Punjab, 226 from Sindh, 193 from Balochistan, 106 from Gilgit-Baltistan and 27 from the Islamabad Capital Territory,” the paper said, adding that 26 suspects belonged to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Accounts of other suspects such as cleric of Islamabad?s Lal Masjid Maulana Aziz, Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat leaders Maulvi Ahmed Ludhianvi and Aurangzeb Faroogi, Matiur Rehman of al-Qaeda, Mansoor alias Ibrahim of Tehreek-e-Taliban and Qari Ehsan alias Ustad Huzaifa and Ramzan Mengal of Lashkar-e- Jhangvi were also frozen, the paper added.

  • How to fast track your IT Career – You don’t have to be an IITian to get to Google

How to fast track your IT Career – You don’t have to be an IITian to get to Google

The IIT tag has helped many a student in India bag coveted jobs at Google, but many non-IITians too have made it to the company straight out of college on the back of their skills rather than campus placements.

Vishwas Tripathi, a student of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, went on to join Google not via campus placements but on his own, by focusing on the basics as well as treading the path less followed.

Tripathi posted an answer on popular Q&A website Quora detailing how he prepared, along with the most important things any student should follow while gearing up for such an interview. Below is his account:

Appeared for APAC Round A: Got a call for anti-abuse profile from Google; could not go for interview as it clashed with mid semester exams.

Appeared for APAC Round B: Got a call for software engineer profile.

Researched little bit about Google interview process. Found out you have to explain answers on a whiteboard; bought a whiteboard for practice.

Re-read first five chapters of “Cracking The Coding Interview.” This is most important thing I have ever read about interview process. It has helped me crack the interview of Flipkart, DirectI, Codenation, and Google. These chapters are about interview process and how to handle it.

Always read from good sources. Do not read from websites offering codes for standard problems. Understand the algorithm and code it yourself. If you want to read something new first try to find it on:

    • “Introduction to Algorithms” by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, Stein
    • Data Science tutorials
    • Or blogs on Topcoder, Codeforces, CodeChef
    • Original research paper of algorithm

I love participating in CodeChef long contest, and would recommend it. It gives you ample amount of time to learn something new. Most of the algorithms I know are because of this contest. Spend days in understanding, coding and testing them. You will at least learn one new algorithm every month by giving CodeChef long contest.

Most of us give many coding contests but do not pay attention to most important part of coding contest, the part after contest ends.

Up-solving: Make it a point to solve at-least one more question, after the contest.

Editorials: People give in lot of time to make editorials (CodeChef have best editorials). Read Them. They often have multiple approaches to solve, and links to best sources to read more.

Read codes of red coders, you will find how beautifully and easily can something be coded which took you so long. You will get inspiration to write better code.

Ask: If you have any doubts, ask them. Ask them in relevant threads. Ask them to your friends or seniors who have solved it. This is the fastest way to learn.

Most of all love what you do, and do what you love.

Disclaimer: I got in because of my interest of competitive programming and algorithms, though this is not the only way to get a job. But this answer is focused on entry through competitive programming.
