  • Cyrus Mistry removed as Tata Sons chairman, Ratan Tata returns as interim chief

Cyrus Mistry removed as Tata Sons chairman, Ratan Tata returns as interim chief

A big change at Tata Sons has sent ripples in the business world. On Monday, October 24, Tata Songs Board replaced Cyrus Mistry as chairman with former chairman Ratan Tata, who will be the interim chairman for four months. The decision was taken at a Tata Sons board meeting. A selection panel has been formed to find a successor in four months.

He was replaced by Ratan Tata, who will be the interim chairman for four months.

The announcement came after the board of Tata Sons met here and decided to replace 48-year-old Mistry, who had taken over from Ratan Tata in 2011.

The board named a five-member search committee, which includes Tata, to choose a successor to Mistry within four months.

Mistry was chosen as Tata’s successor in November, 2011, and was appointed Deputy Chairman of Tata Sons, whose board he had entered in 2006. He was made chairman on the basis of his representation from Shapoorji Palonji, the largest shareholder in Tata Sons.

There were no reasons given for the change of leadership of the man who was brought in with much fanfare but it is believed that Tata Sons was unhappy with Mistry’s approach of shedding non-profit businesses, including the conglomerate’s steel business in Europe, and concentrating only on cash cows.

“Tata Sons today announced its board has replaced Mr Cyrus P Mistry as Chairman of Tata Sons. The decision was taken at a board meeting held here today,” a Tata Sons statement said.

Tata Sons is the main holding company of the group.

CEOs at the operating company level of the group have not been touched in the rejig, company sources said.

The board constituted a selection committee comprising Tata, TVS Group head Venu Srinivasan, Amit Chandra of Bain Capital, former diplomat Ronen Sen and Lord Kumar Bhattacharya. All of them, except Bhattacharya, are on the board of Tata Sons.

“The committee has been mandated to complete the selection process in four months,” it added.

Mistry, who was chosen by a five-member panel in 2011 to succeed Ratan Tata, took over the reins of the conglomerate when the veteran industrialist retired on December 29, 2012, when he turned 75.

After taking charge, he had to face some challenging situations such as the decision to sell Tata Steel UK in the wake of mounting losses.

The Tata group is also engaged in a legal battle with Japan’s Docomo over the split of their telecom joint venture Tata Docomo.

In an interview with an in-house magazine, Mistry had recently stated that the group “should not be afraid of taking tough decisions for the right reasons, with compassion” amid “challenging situations” confronted by some of the group’s businesses that would require hard and bolder decisions on pruning portfolio.

This was in contrast to steps taken by Ratan Tata, who led the group into some notable acquisitions, starting from Tetley by Tata Tea for $450 million in 2000, to steelmaker Corus by Tata Steel in 2007 and the landmark Jaguar Land Rover in 2008 for $2.3 billion by Tata Motors.

During Ratan Tata’s tenure, the group’s revenues grew manifold, totalling $100.09 billion (around Rs 475,721 crore) in 2011-12 from a turnover of a mere Rs 10,000 crore in 1991.

Born on July 4, 1968, Mistry completed his graduation in civil engineering from London’s Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine and followed it up with a masters in Management from the London Business School.

Complaining Shareholders of Indus American Bank advised to contact TIP: Non-disclosure of Identity Promised

The Indian Panorama received during the last couple of weeks, two letters in mail from “concerned shareholders of Indus American Bank”.

The letters carry no name, no address, no contact information, making it impossible to verify their accusations and claims against Indus American Bank.

We can understand the frustration of those who perceive themselves as “cheated” not gaining the support of the potent voice of media. They may harbor the view, and rightly so, that “the community has the right to know both good and bad news”. However, they need understand that when it comes to the reputation of an individual or an institution, a newspaper cannot afford to be a telltale. It is necessary for the newspaper to ascertain facts. When the complainants want to remain incognito, it becomes difficult for a publication to get at the bottom of the truth.

We will, therefore, suggest to the aggrieved shareholders of Indus American Bank to come forward to tell their story and we assure them that their identities will not be disclosed. But let them establish their credentials first before The Indian Panorama can take up their cause.

  • Indian Investor Convicted In Insider Trading Case

New York: An Indian-origin private equity investor has been convicted of conspiracy and securities fraud in the US for tipping off two friends about a proposed 2013 acquisition of a firm by India-based Apollo Tyres, an insider trading scheme that netted over USD 1 million.

Amit Kanodia, 49, was convicted by the federal jury in Boston following a six-day trial of one count of conspiracy and 10 counts of securities fraud, with each count representing the purchase of Cooper Tire securities by co-conspirators Iftikar Ahmed and Steven Watson.

Kanodia was acquitted of eight additional counts of securities fraud related to other purchases made by Ahmed and Watson.

US District Court Judge Nathaniel G Gorton scheduled sentencing for January next year.

Ahmed, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi and Harvard Business School, previously fled to India in May 2015 after prosecutors accused him and longtime friend Kanodia for having engaged in insider trading.

Ahmed remains a fugitive, while Watson pleaded guilty and is set to be sentenced in November.

In the spring of 2013, Kanodia tipped off his two friends, Ahmed and Watson, about the contemplated acquisition of Cooper Tire and Rubber Company by India-based Apollo Tyres.

Kanodia learned about the possible acquisition from his wife who was the General Counsel of Apollo at the time.

In the months leading up to the public announcement of the acquisition, both Ahmed and Watson purchased shares and options in Cooper Tire which trades on the New York Stock Exchange.

On the day of the announcement, Cooper Tire’s share price increased 41 per cent and Ahmed and Watson began selling their interests in the company for a combined profit of more than USD 1 million.

Both Ahmed and Watson paid Kanodia a portion of their illegal profits.

The conspiracy statute provides for a sentence of upto five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of USD 250,000 while the securities fraud statute provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, five years of supervised release and a fine of USD 5 million.

Indian-American Appointed As Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council Member

Washington: A top Indian-American woman academic and president of the University of Houston was today appointed as member of the US Department of Homeland Security’s Academic Advisory Council.

The appointment of Renu Khator, Chancellor of the University of Houston System and president of the University of Houston (UH), was announced by US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.

The council, which is made up of 23 members, including college presidents, academic leaders and inter-agency partners, provides advice and recommendations to the secretary on matters related to homeland security and the academic community.

Since its formation in 2012, members have issued more than 120 recommendations in the areas of academic research and faculty exchange, campus resilience, cybersecurity, international students, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) academic programmes and recruitment of current students and recent graduates.

Renu, who will serve a four-year term on the council, was selected by DHS based on her expertise in higher education leadership and University of Houston’s leadership in homeland security research.

University of Houston is the lead institution for the DHS Center of Excellence for Borders, Trade and Immigration Research, awarded in late 2015, and one of only three universities in Texas with dual designation by the National Security Agency and the DHS for its educational and research programmes in cybersecurity and cyber defense.

“Serving on this council is both an honour and a serious responsibility,” said Ms Khator.

“There can be no more important task than maintaining the safety of our country. Through research, innovation and workforce development, higher education must continue to play a vital role in helping DHS meet that crucial objective,” she said.

“What President Khator brings is not only a deep understanding of the issues facing our campuses but also a firm grasp of the mission of DHS through her work at the University of Houston,” said Trent Frazier, executive director of the Office of Academic Engagement. “DHS and OAE are excited to further collaborate with her.”

Ms Khator joined the University of Houston System in 2008 and oversees a four-university organisation that serves nearly 70,000 students, has an annual budget that exceeds USD 1.7 billion and generates nearly USD 6 billion economic impact on the Greater Houston area each year.

Ms Khator, who holds a Ph.D. in political science and public administration from Purdue University, serves as chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas Board of Directors and was president of the American Council on Education.

  • Indian-American Vikram Chatwal Accused Of Trying To Burn 2 Dogs

NEW YORK: Indian-American hotelier Vikram Chatwal has been charged with criminal mischief for allegedly trying to light two dogs on fire, an allegation his lawyer has denied.

Mr Chatwal, 44, had turned himself to the police early yesterday morning and has been charged with criminal mischief, torture and injure animal, reckless endangerment and arson.

The charges stem from an October 7 incident in which Mr Chatwal allegedly got into an argument with a woman walking the dogs outside his home in the city.

Mr Chatwal, accused of allegedly pulling out a lighter and aerosol can to hurt the two dogs, pleaded not guilty to the charges during his appearance in a Manhattan court yesterday.

Mr Chatwal’s bail was set at USD 50,000 and the next hearing in the case is set for December 8.

His attorney Arthur Aidala told PTI that Mr Chatwal denies all the charges and “proclaims his innocence”.

He said he is a non-violent person who would never injure an animal or human being.

“His personality and disposition in his 44 years is not of somebody who would injure another animal or another human being,” Mr Aidala said.

He informed the judge that Mr Chatwal’s “personality and disposition is that of a calm, peaceful and non-violent person” as Mr Chatwal himself owns many dogs and even takes care of a horse.

“He is known as being an animal lover. We vehemently disagrees with the set of facts that the prosecutor put forth in court,” Mr Aidala said.

Mr Aidala said he also informed the judge that the dogs in this case were not hurt and were not even taken to the veterinarian until days after the alleged incident occurred.

He said even the case the prosecutor puts forth says that some of the hair on the dogs’ back was burnt but none of the dogs were burned and neither did they suffer.

It was among Mr Chatwals’ priority to make sure that the dogs in question were unharmed and were well-treated and cared for, Mr Aidala said.

“The big takeaway from this is that the dogs were never hurt, that was very important to Vikram and his whole family to make sure no one is accusing him of actually hurting the dogs. Even the prosecutor said the dogs were never hurt.”

“What flies in the face of the charges is that Chatwal is just not the kind of person who is going to attack anybody, let alone the dogs walking down the street,” he said.

Mr Aidala said he would meet with the prosecutors in the coming months and explain to them what really happened.

“We will try to work out some sort of disposition regarding case,” he added.

Donald Trump claims ‘everything is rigged against him’, Clinton says

WASHINGTON (TIP): After US President Barack Obama said on Oct 20 that Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump should stop “whining”+ , his party colleague Hillary Clinton took Obama’s comment further to say that “every time Donald thinks things are not going in his direction, he claims whatever it is, is rigged against him.”

In the third US Presidential debate today, Trump was asked specifically if he would allow a “peaceful transition of power” in the event he loses the election+ on November 8.

Trump refused+ to say if he would.

“..I will tell you at the time. I’ll keep you in suspense. OK?” he said, grimly.

Clinton then jumped in to say that every time something goes against him, Trump grumbles it’s “rigged.

” You know, every time Donald thinks things are not going in his direction, he claims whatever it is, is rigged against him. The FBI conducted a year-long investigation into my e-mails. They concluded there was no case; he said the FBI was rigged. He lost the Iowa caucus. He lost the Wisconsin primary. He said the Republican primary was rigged against him. Then Trump University gets sued for fraud and racketeering; he claims the court system and the federal judge is rigged against him. There was even a time when he didn’t get an Emmy for his TV program three years in a row and he started tweeting that the Emmys were rigged against him,” Clinton said, laying bare his litany of being a sore loser.Trump responded to none of those instances Clinton mentioned, except the one about his TV show.

“Should have gotten it,” he interjected about his reality TV show Celebrity Apprentice not getting the US TV Oscars that are called the Emmys.(AP)

Pentagon chief vows ‘overwhelming’ response to any North Korea nuke use

WASHINGTON (TIP): Pentagon chief Ashton Carter on Oct 20 decried North Korea’s latest missile test+ and again vowed an “overwhelming” response if Pyongyang were ever to launch a nuclear weapon.

North Korea on Oct 20 conducted what appeared to be a failed test of a powerful medium-range missile+ that experts warn could be deployed as early as next year.

“We strongly condemn last night’s attempt, which even in failing, violated several UN Security Council resolutions,” Carter said at a joint press conference with his South Korean counterpart, Han Min-Koo.

Carter went on to repeat a pledge he and Secretary of State John Kerry had made in Washington on Wednesday, ahead of the most recent missile test+ .

“Make no mistake: Any attack on America or our allies will not only be defeated, but any use of nuclear weapons+ will be met with an overwhelming and effective response.”

It was the second failed launch in less than a week of the Musudan, which has a theoretical range of anywhere between 2,500 and 4,000 kilometers (1,500 and 2,500 miles).

The lower estimate covers the whole of South Korea and Japan, while the upper range would include US military bases on Guam.

On Wednesday, Kerry said the United States would deploy a missile-defense system to South Korea as soon as possible, despite opposition from China.

Washington sees the US-built Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system as protection against North Korea’s pursuit of missile and nuclear technology. (AFP)

4 shot outside San Francisco schools, suspects at large

SAN FRANCISCO (TIP): Four teenage students were shot in the shared parking lot of two San Francisco high schools on Oct 19, and one of the students is in critical condition, authorities said.

The shooting occurred as students were being let out of school for the day from the June Jordan School for Equity and City Arts and Technology High School, which share a campus, San Francisco Police Officer Carlos Manfredi said.

Three of the victims ran inside the school, and police initially ordered students to stay in place until police searched each room and determined it was not an active shooter situation. A fourth victim hurt in the shooting went to a hospital, Manfredi said.

“One female victim has life-threatening injuries to her upper torso,” he said

Four male suspects wearing dark hoodies and jeans were seen running away from the area, Manfredi said.

The shooters seemed to have targeted the female student, said Karwin Sui, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Unified School District. (AP)

  • Putin’s man? Donald Trump denies Hillary Clinton’s charge that he’s the one

Putin’s man? Donald Trump denies Hillary Clinton’s charge that he’s the one

Hillary Clinton forcefully accused Donald Trump of favoring Russia’s leader over American military and intelligence experts Oct 19 night, as the Republican nominee pointedly refused to accept the U.S. government’s assertion that Moscow has sought to meddle in the presidential election.

In a combative exchange in the final presidential debate, Clinton charged that Russian President Vladimir Putin was backing Trump because “he’d rather have a puppet as president of the United States.”

Trump denied any relationship with Putin and said he would condemn any foreign interference in the election. But he notably refused to accept the intelligence community’s assessment that Russia was involved in the hacking of Democratic organizations. The Clinton campaign has also said the FBI is investigating Russia’s involvement in the hacking of a top adviser’s emails.

The third presidential debate opened with a measured, policy-focused discussion — a stark contrast to the heated and highly personal clashes that defined the earlier contests. However, Trump quickly reverted to his previous style of repeatedly bursting in to interrupt Clinton as well as moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News. (AP)

Donald Trump says he ‘didn’t even apologize’ to his wife, she says he did

WASHINGTON (TIP): Did US Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump apologize to his wife after revelations he was involved in sexual assault ? His wife Melania said he did+ . Today, at the third and final US Presidential debate, Trump said he didn’t.

“I would say the only way — because those stories are all totally false, I have to say that. And I didn’t even apologize to my wife, who’s sitting right here, because I didn’t do anything. I didn’t know any of these — I didn’t see these women,” Trump averred.

Here’s what his wife said on Tuesday to TV show “Fox & Friends” host Ainsley Earhardt – “Those words, they were offensive to me and they were inappropriate… And he apologized to me. And I expect — I accept his apology. And we are moving on.”

Today’s debate host, Fox News’s Chris Wallace, said that since the release of an 11-year-old tape, in which the Republican candidate boasted about groping women+ , nine women have come forward and have said that he “either groped them or kissed them without their consent.”

    Trump denied their charges.

” These women — the woman on the plane, the — I think they want either fame or her campaign did it. And I think it’s her campaign. Because what I saw what they did, which is a criminal act, by the way, where they’re telling people to go out and start fist-fights and start violence,” he said referring to opponent Hillary Clinton.

Trump’s denial didn’t help him, because Clinton used the opportunity to talk about other nasty comments he has made.

“At the last debate, we heard Donald talking about what he did to women.

And after that, a number of women have come forward saying that’s exactly what he did to them. Now, what was his response? Well, he held a number of big rallies where he said that he could not possibly have done those things to those women because they were not attractive enough for them to be assaulted,” Clinton said. • France warns UK premier of tough time ahead in Brexit talks

France warns UK premier of tough time ahead in Brexit talks

BRUSSELS (TIP): France warned Britain at the start of a European Union summit on Oct 20 that it would face a tough, unyielding opponent if it sought too many concessions during its negotiations to leave the 28-nation EU.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who was attending her first EU summit as leader, was expected to brief her European counterparts on the way ahead for Britain’s exit from the trade bloc. Many uncertainties about the divorce remain because Britain has yet to trigger the two-year negotiations for “Brexit” and is unlikely to do so until the end of March.

“It’s in the interests of the UK and the EU that we continue to work closely together, including at this summit,” May said.

French President Francois Hollande immediately insisted that the EU would not surrender the bloc’s core values just to keep Britain close as a future ally.

“I have said so very firmly: Mrs. Theresa May wants a hard Brexit? The negotiations will be hard,” Holland said.

Britain’s June 23 breakup referendum has forced the 27 other nations to plot their future without a major but often recalcitrant member state. European leaders have grumbled that Britain’s tardiness in starting the negotiations slow down their own planning for the next few years.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the other leaders would underscore the urgency and would “make clear again: We are waiting for the notification from Britain.”

The Brexit referendum to leave the EU was a milestone in the history of the bloc and the disentanglement is expected to be long, difficult and confrontational.

Still, EU President Donald Tusk, who chairs the summit, assured the British leader she would not get too hostile a reception.

Tusk said that some compared it to “entering the lion’s den. It’s not true. It’s more like a nest of doves. She’ll be absolutely safe with us. And I hope that she will also realize that the European Union is simply the best company in the world.”

May said Britain would continue to be a responsible member right up to the day it leaves the EU. “I’m here with a very clear message. The UK is leaving the EU but we will continue to play a full role until we leave.”

Like Hollande, Tusk vowed last week not to compromise on the bloc’s principles in negotiating Britain’s departure and warned that London is heading for a hard exit.

He insisted that Britain can’t hope to both stay in Europe’s single market and restrict the movement of EU migrants, saying there would be no compromises.

May has appeared to signal that her government would prioritize controls on immigration over access to the European single market, an approach informally called a “hard Brexit.”

Once May activates the exit clause -Article 50 in the EU’s governing Lisbon Treaty – negotiations on the terms of Britain’s departure would run for two years. The time frame could be extended, but only if the 27 remaining member states agree unanimously. (AP)

  • BEIJING TO HAVE WORLD’S BIGGEST AIR PURIFIER TO FIGHT SMOG

BEIJING TO HAVE WORLD’S BIGGEST AIR PURIFIER TO FIGHT SMOG

BEIJING (TIP): China will deploy world’s largest outdoor air purifier designed by a Dutch engineer in its smog- hit capital Beijing, as the thick heavily-polluted haze returned to haunt the city, driving people indoors.

The seven-meter-tall tower, brainchild of Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde, is undergoing last-minute checks in Beijing’s 751 D Park art area.

The ‘Smog Free Tower’ will soon be opened to the public, and will be toured across the country, state-run Global Times said, quoting China Forum of Environmental Journalists, an NGO under China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection.

The tower can capture about 75 per cent of PM 2.5 and PM 10 tiny particles in its vicinity and then release purified air to create a “bubble” of fresh air around it. The tower can clean 30,000 cubic meters of air per hour through its patented ozone-free ion technology.

Beijing has been plagued with heavy smog since the beginning of October. The city’s environmental authorities issued a “yellow alert” for air pollution on Tuesday.

“Yellow alert” is the third-most serious level in a four tier colour-code warning system. Red is the most serious and orange the second-most serious while blue is the least serious pollution level.

The average PM2.5 density of the small deadly polluted particles crossed over 300 today even though a cold front in the morning cleared the smog a bit.

Liu Guozheng, CFEJ secretary-general said the tower is intended to warn authorities never to forget their duty and encourage the public to pull together to combat the smog.

The public, meanwhile, are bemused by the tower’s function and have called on authorities to curb dangerous sources of polluting particles, the daily said.

Netizens expressed their frustration over the tower.

“The so-called divine smog cleaner is more like a piece of performance art, which makes almost zero difference to cleaner air in the city. It devours the polluted air and exhales fresh air, but so little it won’t make any difference. The air will stay polluted,” the daily quoted a comment by Sina Weibo user. (PTI)

Forces moving ‘faster than expected’ on Mosul: Iraq PM

PARIS (TI): Iraqi forces are “advancing faster than expected” in a major offensive to recapture Mosul from Islamic State jihadists, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Oct 20.

“We are advancing faster than we had expected and planned,” Abadi said, speaking on a videoconference link to an international meeting cohosted by France and Iraq on the future of Mosul following the start of the offensive this week.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian had warned on Tuesday that the battle to retake Iraq’s second-biggest city could take “months”.

French President Francois Hollande told today’s meeting that the jihadists were already fleeing to Raqa, their stronghold in neighbouring Syria.

“We can’t afford mistakes in the pursuit of the terrorists who are already leaving Mosul for Raqa,” Hollande said, adding: “We cannot allow those who were in Mosul to evaporate.”

The long-awaited offensive on Mosul was launched on Monday, with some 30,000 troops involved in Iraq’s largest military operation since the pullout of US troops in 2011.

Representatives from around 20 countries including the US, Turkey, Gulf states and EU member states are attending the Paris meeting co-chaired by French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

Today’s talks come ahead of a meeting in Paris next Tuesday of the coalition’s defence ministers to assess progress in the Mosul offensive. US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter will be among 13 ministers at the talks, an aide to Le Drian said. (AFP)

Russia extends Aleppo truce by 24 hours: Defence minister

MOSCOW (TIP): Russia’s defence minister said Oct 20 that Moscow was extending a “humanitarian pause” in Aleppo scheduled to end at 1600 GMT by a further day.

On the order of President Vladimir Putin, “a decision was made to extend the ‘humanitarian pause’ by 24 hours,” minister Sergei Shoigu said in a statement, adding that Syrian authorities had agreed to the extension.

Shoigu did not specify when the extended truce would end. The UN said earlier it had received a pledge from Moscow to extend it until Saturday.

Russia, facing growing criticism of the brutal Moscow-backed assault on the city, said this week that its forces and Syrian regime troops would briefly halt fire in Aleppo on Thursday.

Moscow said Tuesday that Russian and Syrian warplanes had stopped bombing Aleppo to pave the way for the humanitarian truce.

The Russian defence ministry has said the ceasefire would enable civilians and armed rebels to leave the city’s rebel-held east through six corridors.

After Syria talks with the French and German leaders, Putin said Thursday that Russia intended to extend the halt in its air strikes against Aleppo “as far as possible.”

The UN said it hoped to carry out the first medical evacuations from Aleppo on Friday, after having received clearance from all warring parties and a pledge from Russia to extend the truce until Saturday.

The West has accused Moscow of perpetrating potential war crimes in Aleppo through indiscriminate bombing to support Syrian government efforts to retake total control over the city. (PTI)

Milan honors Dalai Lama as citizen over China’s objections

MILAN (TIP): The Milan city council bestowed honorary citizenship on the Dalai Lama on Oct 20 over the objections of Chinese Embassy, which said the gesture would have a negative impact on bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate accepted the honor inside a theater at the University of Milan-Bicocca campus before an audience of mostly students.

“I want to know what my right is, and what is my duty,” the Dalai Lama said, getting a laugh when he quipped that he preferred rights to duties.

On the eve of his arrival, the Chinese embassy in Rome issued a statement saying that honoring the Dalai Lama “has seriously wounded the feelings of the Chinese people” and expressing its “strong protest and firm opposition.”

Outside the theater, several dozen Chinese residents voiced their displeasure with the award, saying it was a slap at their contributions to the Italian economy. They waved Italian and Chinese flags, and stood behind banners proclaiming Chinese sovereignty over Tibet.

Tensions arose when a handful of Tibetan protesters approached the Chinese contingent, but police separated the two groups without incident, the news agency ANSA reported.

China accuses the Dalai Lama of leading a campaign to split Tibet from the rest of China. The exiled spiritual leader says he simply wants Tibet to have a higher degree of autonomy under Chinese rule.

Italy has been the favorite country in Europe for Chinese firms looking for acquisitions. Chinese firms bought 14 Italian companies last year for a combined total of $10.6 billion, according to KPMG, led by the $7.7 billion acquisition of tire maker Pirelli.

China has also invested billions in Italian electrical grid operators, carmakers, telecom firms and luxury brands in recent years.

In Milan alone, the number of Chinese residents has doubled over the past decade to nearly 29,000, doubling also the number of businesses, according to Francesco Wu, who leads an organization of Chinese entrepreneurs in Milan and joined Oct 20 protest.

The Dalai Lama also met privately with the archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Angelo Scola, as well as with Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala on the first day of a three-day visit that includes a series of spiritual talks.

He also is to receive honorary citizenship of the Milan suburb of Rho, home to the fairgrounds where several of his talks will take place.

In Beijing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman told reporters that China opposes any official meeting with the Dalai Lama and asked that countries respect “China’s grave concerns.”

The Dalai Lama said in an interview with the Italian daily La Repubblica that the climate in Tibet “remains extremely grim and repressive, characterized by constant controls of Tibetans, who are denied many basic human rights.”

“Whether they admit it or not, Tibet remains a thorn for China, which wants to play an important role in the world,” he was quoted as saying. (PTI)

TYPHOON HAIMA KILLS 12 IN PHILIPPINES, TAKES AIM AT HONG KONG

BENGUET (PHILIPPINES) (TIP): Typhoon Haima, the strongest storm to hit the Philippines in three years, killed at least 12 people and inundated vast tracts of rice and corn fields, officials in Manila said on Oct 20, before it took aim at Hong Kong.

Philippine authorities said they were assessing the extent of damage to infrastructure and crops, but confirmed that thousands of hectares of farmland were destroyed in northern provinces.

Eight of the victims were from the Cordillera region, said Ricardo Jalad, chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, citing reports the agency received from provincial officials.

In Cagayan alone, where the super typhoon made landfall late on Wednesday with destructive 225 kmph winds and heavy rain, between 50,000-60,000 hectares of rice fields were flattened and flooded, said the provincial governor Manuel Mamba.

“It was like we were hit by another Yolanda,” he told a radio station, referring to the 2013 super typhoon known internationally as Haiyan which killed at least 6,000 people and destroyed billions of pesos worth of property.

Hong Kong shut all but essential services in the global financial hub as the storm approached. (PTI)

KHAZER (TIP): Iraqi special forces joined the Mosul offensive on Oct 20 with a pre-dawn advance on a nearby town held by the Islamic State group, encountering heavy fire.

Major general Maan al-Saadi said the elite Counterterrorism Forces advanced on the town of Bartalla with the aid of US-led coalition airstrikes and heavy artillery on the fourth day of a massive operation to retake Iraq’s second-largest city.

The special forces are expected to lead the way into Mosul, where they will face fierce resistance in an urban landscape where IS militants are preparing for a climactic battle.

The offensive is the largest operation launched by Iraqi forces since the 2003 US-led invasion. It is expected to take weeks, if not months.

  • Philippines’ Duterte, in China, announces ‘separation’ from US

Philippines’ Duterte, in China, announces ‘separation’ from US

BEIJING (TIP): Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte declared his “separation” from longstanding ally the United States in Beijing on Oct 20, as he rebalances his country’s diplomacy towards China.

“I announce my separation from the United States,” he said to applause at a meeting in the Chinese capital.

His comments came after he met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square, with the two men pledging to enhance trust and friendship, while playing down a maritime dispute.

The two leaders — Duterte donning a suit and tie for the occasion — strode side-by-side down the red carpet inspecting an honour guard, with children cheering.

Xi called the two countries “neighbours across the sea” with “no reason for hostility or confrontation”, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Duterte is in China for a four-day trip seen as confirming his tilt away from Washington and towards Beijing’s sphere of influence — and its deep pockets.

Under Duterte’s predecessor Benigno Aquino the two countries were at loggerheads over the South China Sea –where Beijing has built a series of artificial islands — but since taking office in June the new head of state has changed course.

The two leaders held “extensive” and “amicable” official talks and oversaw the signing of 13 bilateral cooperation documents on business, infrastructure, and agriculture, among other fields, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, without giving details.

In a statement, the foreign ministry cited Xi as telling Duterte their emotional foundation of friendly good neighbourliness was unchanged, and difficult topics of discussion “could be shelved temporarily”.

Duterte called the meeting “historic”, it added.

Duterte’s visit to Beijing capped a series of recent declarations blasting the US and President Barack Obama.

Addressing the Filipino community in Beijing on Wednesday, the firebrand leader said the Philippines had gained little from its long alliance with the US, its former colonial ruler.

“Your stay in my country was for your own benefit. So time to say goodbye, my friend,” he said, as if addressing the US.

He also repeated his denunciation of Obama as a “son of a whore”.

China, he said earlier, was “good”. “It has never invaded a piece of my country all these generations.”

Duterte has also suspended joint US-Philippine patrols in the strategically vital South China Sea, and has threatened an end to joint military exercises.

The South China Sea is of intense interest to Washington and it has repeatedly spoken out on the various territorial disputes between China and its neighbours over the waters.

Tensions have risen between the US and China over Washington’s so-called “pivot” to the Asia-Pacific, a move that Beijing says is intended to contain it.

In 2012, China seized control of Scarborough Shoal, a fishing ground in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

In a case brought by Aquino, the Philippines won a resounding victory at an international tribunal earlier this year over Beijing’s extensive territorial maritime claims in the area, infuriating the Asian giant.

But Duterte, who took office in June shortly before the tribunal ruling, has made a point of not flaunting the outcome.

Asked whether the leaders had discussed the South China Sea, the foreign ministry’s Hua said they had a “candid and friendly exchange of views on how to resolve relevant disputes”.

Their meeting represented a “return to the right track of dialogue and consultation” she said, adding China was willing to make “relevant arrangements” to cooperate on fishery issues. (AFP)

  • WOULD LIKE TO BE PRIVATE ABOUT MY LOVE LIFE, SAYS PARINEETI CHOPRA

WOULD LIKE TO BE PRIVATE ABOUT MY LOVE LIFE, SAYS PARINEETI CHOPRA

Bollywood celebrities are opening up to the world about issues like facing depression and body shaming. While actress Parineeti Chopra says she is at ease about sharing other aspects about her life in public, her love life is not for all to know.

“Just about my love life, I would like to be private, because there is so much scrutiny in there. There are so many people in the world who are looking at you and judging you. I just don’t want that between me and my partner. And as respect to my partner, I shouldn’t be talking about it,” said Parineeti as per reports from IANS.

The 27-year-old actor says that, as an actor, her life is open for everybody to be involved in. “But other things. Because my life is out there in the open for everybody to be involved in, so I would like to share everything that’s going on in my life and I’m happy to do that,” she said.

Asked about her opinion on actors opening up about themselves in public, Parineeti said, “It’s great! To each his or her own. Some people are private, some people are comfortable talking. Obviously, as actors, whatever is happening in our life the whole world gets to know because it is reported by the media. You can choose what information to put out there and what not to.”

Parineeti made her Bollywood debut in 2011 with Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and since then has been on a roll. She says while her launch pad in filmdom came easily, “the struggle was after that”. “Clinching Ishaqzaade or other films, performing and those films doing well or not… That was the struggle,” said the actor, who was earlier working with Yash Raj Films as a public relations consultant. “Right now I’m in a good place and happy with where I am, happy with the things that are happening. So, yeah, it’s been really good,” she added while reflecting on her journey.

  • I grew up poor; where I’m today is my biggest achievement: Nargis Fakhri

I grew up poor; where I’m today is my biggest achievement: Nargis Fakhri

Actor Nargis Fakhri enjoys her work, but says she won’t let it “consume” her life. That explains the recent speculation about her quitting Bollywood for good to be with her family in New York, US. As she turned a year older on October 20, the 37-year-old clarifies she’d come by when she has a good film offer in hand, and that life is about experiencing different things.

“For me, life isn’t about what it is for everyone else… like ‘oh career… I have to do this, I have to be married by a certain age’. It is about doing anything new that adds to my knowledge. Work is only a piece in my life. It doesn’t consume my whole life. I want to take vacations, meet friends, and spend time with family and my mother,” says Nargis.

This realisation dawned on her when recently; someone told her that she wasn’t ambitious enough. Talking about her priorities in life being different, Nargis says, “I am ambitious about life, about doing different things, meeting new people and being a positive person. My ambition is geared in a different direction so many people don’t understand it. It is not just limited to a professional sphere. Also because I grew up very poor. For me, where I am today, compared to where I came from, is my biggest achievement. I’m so proud of myself.” The actor adds that she prefers real connections over materialistic possessions. “When we die, we can’t take our money or any materialistic things. When you are so focused in this business, you have less time for friends and family and real, solid connections. To me connecting with a human holds more value than a bag, shoes or a fancy car,” says Nargis.

So what would be an alternate career option if not acting? “Travelling”, she says instantly . “I feel more passionately about healthy living than anything else. I like spreading positivity. So something in the health and wellness space. I’ll try to explore that area to see where I fit in,” says Nargis. Source: HT

  • Person of Indian Origin-Led Team Develops Life-Size 3D Hand Models

Washington: An Indian-origin researcher and his team in US have created life-size 3D hand models, complete with all five fingerprints using a high-resolution 3D printer that can produce the same ridges and valleys as a real finger.

Creating a 3-D replica of someone’s hand complete with all five fingerprints and breaking into a secure vault sounds like a plot from a James Bond movie, researchers said.

However, Michigan State University Distinguished Professor Anil Jain discovered this may not be as far-fetched as once thought and wants security companies and the public to be aware.

Jain and his biometrics team were studying how to test and calibrate fingerprint scanners commonly used across the globe at police departments, airport immigration counters, banks and even amusement parks.

Without a standard life-like 3-D model to test the scanners with, there is no consistent and repeatable way to determine the accuracy of the scans and establish which scanner is better.

To test the scanners, they created life-size 3-D hand models complete with all five fingerprints using a
high-resolution 3-D printer that can produce the same ridges and valleys as a real finger.

“Like any optical device, fingerprint and hand scanners need to be calibrated, but currently there is no standard method for calibrating them,” said Jain.

This is the first time a whole hand 3-D target has been created to calibrate fingerprint scanners. As a byproduct of this research we realized a fake 3-D hand, essentially a spoof, with someone’s fingerprints, could potentially allow a crook to steal the person’s identity to break into a vault,
contaminate a crime scene or enter the country illegally.

“Now, another application of this technology will be to evaluate the spoof-resistance of commercial fingerprint scanners,” Jain added.

“We have highlighted a security loophole and the limitations of existing fingerprint scanning technology, now it’s up to the scanner manufacturers to design a scanner that is spoof-resistant.

“The burden is on them to tell whether the finger being placed on the scanner is real human skin or a printed material,” he said.

The study aims to design and develop standard models and procedures for consistent and reliable evaluation of fingerprint readers.

“We are very pleased with this research and how it is showing the uncertainties in the process and what it can mean for the accuracy of the readers,” said Nicholas Paulter, group leader for the Security Technologies Group at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and a co-author of the study.
