Marijuana could help treat drug addiction, depression

Using marijuana could help some alcoholics and people addicted to opioids kick the habit and may also help people suffering from depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety, says a study.

“Research suggests that people may be using cannabis as an exit drug to reduce the use of substances that are potentially more harmful, such as opioid pain medication,” said the study’s lead investigator Zach Walsh, Associate Professor at University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus in Canada.

The study published in the journal Clinical Psychology Review is based on a systematic review of research on the medical cannabis use and mental health as well as reviews on non-medical cannabis use.

However, the review concluded that cannabis use might not be recommended for conditions such as bipolar disorder and psychosis.

“In reviewing the limited evidence on medical cannabis, it appears that patients and others who have advocated for cannabis as a tool for harm reduction and mental health have some valid points,” Walsh said.

It is important to identify ways to help mental health professional move beyond stigma to better understand the risk and benefits of cannabis, Walsh added.

“There is not currently a lot of clear guidance on how mental health professionals can best work with people who are using cannabis for medical purposes,” Walsh said.

  • Cough virus helps combat liver cancer in adulthood

Cough virus helps combat liver cancer in adulthood

A virus that cause respiratory illnesses and stomach upsets in children could help in the fight against primary liver cancer, according to a study. Reovirus stimulates the body’s own immune system to kill off the cancerous cells and is also able to kill off the hepatitis C virus – a common cause of primary liver cancer – at the same time, the researchers at the University of Leeds discovered.

These early stage findings are important because primary liver cancer is the third highest cause of cancer deaths worldwide and, if surgery is not an option, the prognosis is poor. Study co-leader Dr Stephen Griffin, Associate Professor of Viral Oncology at the University of Leeds, said: “Ultimately we hope that by simultaneously treating the tumor, and the hepatitis virus that is driving the growth of the tumor, we may provide a more effective therapy and improve the outcomes for patients.

“Current treatments for liver cancer that can’t be removed by surgery are mainly palliative with chemotherapy only tending to prolong life, rather than cure and it can have significant side effects.” The University of Leeds team found that Reovirus was successful in treating both liver cancer cells grown in the laboratory and those taken directly from patients undergoing surgery.

When introduced into the body, Reovirus stimulates an immune system factor known as interferon, which in turn causes the activation of a specific white blood cell called a Natural Killer cell. These Natural Killer cells then kill both the tumor, and cells infected with the hepatitis C virus.

Stimulating the immune system to kill cancer cells is known as immunotherapy. It differs from chemotherapy, in which the actual drugs kill the cancer cells. The researchers are now hoping to start the first in-human clinical trials. Study co-leader Professor Alan Melcher, now Professor of Translational Immunotherapy at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, said: “Our study establishes a completely new type of viral immunotherapy for the most common primary liver cancer type, hepatocellular carcinoma, which has a very poor prognosis in its advanced form.

  • WHY SOME WOMEN ARE UNABLE TO CONCEIVE

WHY SOME WOMEN ARE UNABLE TO CONCEIVE

Researchers have found that endometriosis — a chronic condition affecting around 10 per cent of women — may be the reason behind their difficulty in getting pregnant.

Endometriosis — chronic abdominal pain, irregular periods, and lowered fertility — is strongly associated with infertility and up to 50 per cent of women who require infertility treatment have it, the study said.

In order to become pregnant, a woman must produce a mature egg, which then is released to be fertilised.

However, the study found that eggs in women who have endometriosis are affected by a very hostile uterine environment that lowers fertility.

In women with endometriosis, ability of the egg to mature gets blocked as it suffers serious damage by exposure to follicular fluid and the egg quality gets severely compromised, the researchers explained.

“The study found that fluid from the follicles of patients with endometriosis was found to block egg maturation by generating free-radical chemicals called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in the egg, which damage their DNA. This damage caused the egg not to mature, and hence it could not be fertilised,” added Simon Lane, doctoral student at the University of Southampton.More research is now needed to investigate whether such damage caused by endometriosis is treatable or preventable, Lane said. According to researchers, the effects of endometriosis on eggs could be prevented by antioxidants, as they can decrease ROS levels and help eggs to mature.

  • REASONS YOU’RE NOT LOSING WEIGHT

    REASONS YOU’RE NOT LOSING WEIGHT

Losing weight is no walk in the park. A lot of it actually depends on your metabolism — while some people are blessed with burning off calories faster than you probably finish your meal, others aren’t so lucky. In fact, for a large part of the population, losing weight is an uphill task. And it often happens that you’re religiously following a diet and exercise regime but are still failing to drop those pounds. Here are some blunders you could be making that are hindering your progress…

    You don’t sleep enough

Sleep is extremely essential and not simply a time when your body is resting. And when you don’t sleep enough, you’re lowering the benefits that come with dieting and exercise. Sleep deprivation can cause a number of health woes, not to mention a sluggish metabolism, increased appetite and lower energy levels.

    You reward yourself too often

No matter how well you think you’re doing at the gym, rewarding yourself regularly with sweet treats for every extra hour spent at the gym will undo any good that you have done. While it is alright to motivate yourself now and then, be careful because every little treat has far more calories than you imagine.

You have a lot of sweet drinks

You may be following a diet but it will be of little use if you don’t watch what you drink. Smoothies, packaged fruit juices, fizzy, energy and aerated drinks are packed with sugar and calories that will cause you to gain weight. Instead, have green tea, coconut water and natural fruit juices sans any sugar.

    You barely eat

This is another mistake that a lot of dieters make. Just because you’re on a diet doesn’t mean you have to eat tiny morsels for each meal. Eating very little makes your body store whatever you east as fat —just the opposite of what you want. It also causes your metabolism to slow down, making it more difficult for you to lose weight. Clinical nutritionist Dr Nupur Krishnan says, “The human body is programmed to send out hunger signals whenever it needs an energy boost, usually between meals. A number of studies have established that eating frequent small meals is a better weight management strategy than eating one or two large meals. One strategy is to divide your food evenly, eating smaller nutritious portions every few hours.”

    You binge eat

Giving in to temptation and gorging on your favourite foods can wreak havoc on your diet. A cheat day where you allow yourself a small portion of your favourite snack is alright but to go on a binge eating spree will undo all the good that you’re done over the previous days. Be consistent in your diet and you’ll soon get the results you desire. Explains healing diet specialist Dhvani Shah, “Apart from weight gain, binge eating results in a stark decrease in micronutrients causing dull skin, hairfall, hormonal imbalance, acidity and constipation. Other side-effects include vitamin deficiencies, loss of muscle tone and lower bone density.”

You don’t watch your portion size

Eating healthy doesn’t mean you pile your plate high with salads or other low cal meals. Watching your portion size is crucial when it comes to losing weight, so be conscious of exactly how much you put on your plate. “Snacking can actually be beneficial if one makes the right choice. By choosing nutritious bites, people can not only satisfy hunger, but also get additional nutrients that they need for a healthy living. The idea is not to ban snacks but to plan them,” explains Dr Nupur.

You stick to the same workout regime

The trick to losing weight quickly is to ensure that you vary your workout regime regularly. When your body gets used to the same exercise routine, you’ll find it harder to lose weight. Mix up your regime — not only will you enjoy your workouts, you’ll also see results faster.

    You have underlying medical conditions

When you’re suffering from certain medical conditions, losing weight is more difficult.

These include hypothyroidism, PCOS and other hormonal conditions that cause weight gain. You could also be suffering from some sort of food allergy or side-effects of some medication that you’re taking that is making it tough for you to lose weight. Source: TOI

  • WINTER SKIN CARE CHECKLIST

    WINTER SKIN CARE CHECKLIST

Befriend a moisturiser, use face oils and avoid excessive exfoliation to get a natural glow despite the chill in the air.

Megha Shah, cosmetologist at Beauty & Curves Clinic, Surat, has shared a few skin care tips that can be followed during winter season:

    – Cool breeze may deprive your skin of the essential moisture that keeps it soft. Apply and then reapply the moisturiser. But make sure that it is not too heavy for your skin. Otherwise, it will make your skin look oily and dark. A gel-to-cream base moisturiser would be ideal for any skin type.

    – Bio oil not only offers anti-ageing properties, but also provides nourishment to the skin. These oils add a protective layer to your skin and offer that super glow.

    – Hot water takes off the natural oil from the body, it plays havoc if you already have a dry skin. A lukewarm water is ideal to suit your body temperature as it does not dilate capillaries due to excessive heat.

    – Have a nutritionally rich diet or food items rich in Omega 3 for a glowing skin. Nuts and seasonal vegetables are great for your skin. Avoid starchy and sugary foods as they may cause bloating and acne.

    * Since your skin is already dry during winter season, excessive exfoliation will wash off all the natural oils from the skin and can damage it badly causing redness. Use gentle exfoliators like oatmeal and coffee powder, and seal it with a cream.

  • Government Limits Notes Exchange to Rs. 2,000, Starting November 18

Government Limits Notes Exchange to Rs. 2,000, Starting November 18

NEW DELHI (TIP): India government announced, November 17, new measures to help farmers and families planning weddings withdraw more money from banks amid a massive cash crunch after the sudden ban on high value currency last week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed cash availability and the steps taken to ease hardship in a meeting with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and the officials.

The limit for swapping notes at banks has been reduced from Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 2,000 for each person from Friday. Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said this would give more people a chance to exchange banned Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes. The withdrawal limit was raised from Rs. 4,000 just four days ago, a measure that was welcomed by many as it would mean less trips to the bank.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, November 17, 22,500 ATMs would be recalibrated today, allowing them to dispense new notes. There are around 2 lakh ATMs across the country.

Families can withdraw Rs. 2.5 lakh in one go for weddings but only from one account, based on self-declaration. In the wedding season, the notes ban has led to a severe crisis for families who had withdrawn cash in bulk just before the demonetization.

Farmers can withdraw up to Rs. 25,000 a week against loans sanctioned to them to buy seeds and fertilizers and credited to their accounts. Rs. 25,000 a week can be drawn from payment that farmers receive for agricultural produce in form of checks. The time limit for the payment of insurance premium on crop loan has been extended by 15 days.

Traders in vegetable wholesale markets can withdraw Rs. 50,000 a week to pay for expenses like wages.

The Reserve Bank has reiterated that there is sufficient supply of notes “consequent upon increased production which started nearly two months ago”. It asked the people not to panic or hoard currency notes.

Government employees will have the option to draw salary advance in cash.

National Highways will not collect toll tax till November 24 midnight.

The government’s sudden decision to pull out the high value currency notes from circulation to check black or untaxed money has driven people to wait for hours at banks and ATMs for cash.

Since November 8, the government has announced more measures to reduce the pressure on people, amid opposition allegations that it was a poorly planned move.

  • Demonetization a ‘Bold Move’ To Curb Shadow Economy: Bill Gates

Demonetization a ‘Bold Move’ To Curb Shadow Economy: Bill Gates

NEW DELHI (TIP): Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetization decision, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has said it is a “bold move” and will deflate India’s shadow economy.

Delivering the Second Transforming India Lecture organized NITI Aayog on Wednesday, November 16, Gates said that shift to digital transactions will enhance transparency and reduce leakages. PM Modi, in surprise decision on November 8, demonetized currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 denomination, replacing them with new Rs. 500 and Rs. 2,000 bills.

“The Prime Minister’s bold move to demonetize high-value denominations and replace with new notes with high security features is an important step to deflate India’s shadow economy,” Gates said.

India, he added, “has all the pieces in place for a compelling vision for digital financial inclusion. Aadhaar will convert a cumbersome, paper-based account opening process into a 30-second, all-digital system.”

He was of the view that Aadhaar will also create a centralized data repository. The impending rollout of payment banks and the ubiquity of mobile phones can enable access for all Indians to digital accounts connected to a fraud-resistant interoperable payment system, he said.

Referring to health issues in India, the Co-Chairman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said, “If I had a wand and could fix one health issue in India, it would be the malnutrition crisis. There are states that have made great progress, but there also are regions where malnutrition is the norm, not the exception.”

Demonetization – How People are reacting on Social Media

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sudden decision to ban Rs1,000 and Rs500 notes in an attempt to crack down on black money has created a storm in India and abroad. While many including celebrities hailed this move as a surgical strike on black money, politicians and common man expressed their fury for the trouble they faced as they had to stand in long lines for hours and/or returned empty-handed from banks in search of new notes to replace their banned currency. They took social media to speak up their mind.

Most Bollywood celebs welcomed the move.

amitabh-bachchanAMITABH BACHCHAN “T2435 – the new 2000 rs note is PINK in color … the PINK effect ..!!”

RITEISH DESHMUKH “Bold move by PM @narendramodi ji as the #1000rs #500rs notes become invalid/redundant. #NewIndia”

Among the politicians, West Bengal Chief Minister MAMATA BANERJEE was the first one who criticized Modi for not thinking about the sufferings of poor section and ordinary people who have no criminal intent. “Withdraw This Draconian Decision”, she tweeted hours after the banning on November 7.

After leading a 1-kilometre march from Parliament House to the Rashtrapati Bhawan on November 16, she gave ‘ATM’ a whole new full form.

“Initially ATM meant “All time Money” now it is “Aayega tab milega” she said. Situation got worse in last ten days and people started reacting angrily on social media.

RAHUL BHATIA – Such a weird week. It feels like one of those stories my parents told me about life in the 70s.

  • Modi May Need Six More Months to Replace India’s Junk Bills: Economist Saumitra Chaudhuri

Modi May Need Six More Months to Replace India’s Junk Bills: Economist Saumitra Chaudhuri

One estimate pegs May 2017 as date when bills will be replaced; Deutsche Bank says crunch to cut 50bps from Oct-Dec GDP growth

NEW YORK (TIP): For Indians expecting respite from the government’s clampdown on cash, here’s a reality check: it probably won’t come soon, says a Bloomberg report published November 17.

Bloomberg report quoted Saumitra Chaudhuri, an economist who advised Modi’s predecessor who said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration may need until May 2017 to replenish the stock of now worthless bills”, The government on Nov. 8 banned 500 ($7.5) and 1,000 rupee notes in a surprise move against graft and tax evasion.

Delays in replacing the currency risk prolonging the pain in the $2 trillion economy, where about 98 percent of consumer payments are made in cash. Deutsche Bank AG predicts the crunch could easily shave off a half-point from India’s growth in October-December, which could imperil its position as the world’s fastest-growing major market.

This is how Chaudhuri reached his conclusion, which he published in a blog post on the Economic Times’ website: Extrapolating from central bank data, he estimates that Modi’s move sucked out about 16.6 billion notes of the 500-denomination, and 6.7 billion 1,000-rupee bills. That means more than 23 billion notes totaling 15 trillion rupees.Modi intends to replace these with new 2,000-rupee and 500-rupee bills. However, Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Pvt., which prints the higher denomination currency, has a stated capacity of just 1.3 billion notes a month. That’s with working double shifts. Raise this to triple shifts and it becomes 2 billion bills, which means it will need until the end of 2016 to replenish in value the 1,000-rupee notes. Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd., whose capacity Chaudhuri estimates at 1 billion pieces a month, will need several more months to meet the 500-rupee target, even if it joins forces with BRBNM, he said. “Ergo, currency shortages will remain with us for many months and economic contraction will rule this period,” he wrote. “At the end of the period, confidence will be at new lows and recovery will take time.”

In what could make matters worse, the presses — busy with the new bills — have almost completely stopped printing 100-rupee notes, Bloomberg Quint reported Wednesday citing central bank sources it didn’t name. These bills are the bread-and-butter of India’s $780 billion informal economy, which employs more than 90 percent of the workforce.

  • Yemen’s Shiite rebels say they back US-brokered cease-fire

Yemen’s Shiite rebels say they back US-brokered cease-fire

SANAA, YEMEN (TIP): Amid more clashes on Nov 17 in Yemen, the country’s Shiite rebels confirmed their endorsement a US-brokered cease-fire deal previously announced by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

However, the backing of the deal by Yemeni rebels, also known as Houthis, was a moot point since Yemen’s internationally-recognized government has already dismissed the plan as “unilateral,” saying it was not involved in recent talks between Kerry and a Houthi delegation in Oman.

On the ground, government forces expelled rebels from several districts in the western city of Taiz while an international rights group issued a damning report on Thursday, criticizing the Houthis’ detentions of political opponents.

Human Rights Watch said the Shiite rebels have carried out hundreds of unlawful detentions and torture since capturing the country’s capital, Sanaa. The New York-based group said it has documented two deaths in custody and 11 cases of alleged torture and abuses.

HRW also called upon the Houthis in Sanaa to hold officials accountable and to release the detainees – without forcing them to sign false confessions of cooperating with a Saudi-led coalition that is waging a war to expel the Houthis from territory the rebels captured.

Sarah Leah Whitson, the Mideast director at Human Rights Watch, said the war between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition “provides no justification for torture and ‘disappearance’ of perceived opponents.”

Houthis descended from their northern enclave in 2014 to take Sanaa and much of northern Yemen. The rebels forced President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to flee the country and seek shelter in Saudi Arabia, which subsequently launched the intervention by mostly Gulf Arab states that has consisted mainly of a punishing air campaign.

The airstrikes, together with the ground fighting, have pushed the already impoverished nation to the brink of famine and displaced nearly three million people. The conflict has killed over 4,000 civilians.

In his announcement, Kerry said the cease-fire was supposed to start on Thursday and lead to the formation of a unity government before the end of the year.

Mohammed Abdel-Salam, the Houthis spokesperson, told Al-Masirah TV late on Wednesday that the rebels agreed to the deal.

The peace plane, however, sidelines Hadi, transfers his authorities to a newly appointed vice president, and gives the Houthis a share of power.

Residents in Taiz, one of the worst-hit cities in Yemen’s conflict, said airstrikes rocked the city’s eastern districts. Images were posted on social media showing pro-government fighters on tanks and armored vehicles, flashing the victory sign in front of newly captured positions, including the city’s military hospital.

Dozens were killed and wounded in the fighting but a precise death toll among fighters from the two sides was not available. The residents spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for their safety. (AP)

Hollande awards France’s Legion of Honour to UN’s Ban Ki-moon

PARIS (TIP): United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon received the Legion of Honour from French President Francois Hollande on Nov 17 for his contributions to tackling climate change.

The South Korean diplomat helped push through the 2015 Paris Agreement, a deal aimed at moving away from fossil fuels to cleaner energies that was signed by almost 200 countries after nearly two decades of negotiations.

“It was largely because of your contribution, because many years ago you started putting this topic on all the agendas,” Hollande said at the ceremony of Ban’s efforts.

The Legion of Honour was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and is considered to be one of France’s highest civilian awards.

“By doing this you are rewarding our honourable organisation and I feel deeply honoured and proud,” said Ban, who will step down as head of the 193-member world organisation after 10 years on January 1. He will be replaced by Antonio Guterres of Portugal. (Reuters)

  • The War over Demonetization

    The War over Demonetization

Government unfazed by combined opposition attack; fight will continue, says opposition Meanwhile, the common people undergo terrible suffering

The war over demonetization between the government and opposition is getting fiercer as the latter vows to continue the fight while the Modi government makes it clear that they will stick to the decision.

On November 17, West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal  sharply criticized Modi while addressing a rally in New Delhi. Kejriwal alleged that demonetization was the “biggest scam” in Independent India’s history and asked the government to roll back it in three days.

Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal led march to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest demonetization
Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal led march to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest demonetization

Saying that such a crisis was not seen even during Emergency, Banerjee warned Modi that he should not run the country through “dictatorship” and the ‘protest is a fight to save the country.’

Rejecting opposition party’s demand of withdrawing decision on banning 1,000 and 500 currency notes, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley ruled out roll back of demonetization saying that the government will stick to it.

“Whatever AAP and Trinamool Congress said about the roll back, there is no question of that. It is a clear decision of the Prime Minister and government to cleanse politics and economy of the country. We will stick to it”, said Jaitley.

On November 16, in a surprise move, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ally Shiv Sena decided to participate in a protest march to the Rashtrapati Bhavan led by Mamata Banerjee along with National Conference and AAP leaders. Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray had earlier said in a press conference “Modi did a surgical strike along the LoC and deserved praise. However, his demonetization decision could bounce back on him.”

Surprisingly, Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar and strong critic of Modi, expressed his “total support” for the ban, according to a report by NDTV. He said that like other opposition parties, he is concerned by the plight of millions of people left without any cash, but believes the PM’s reform will be effective and that Mr. Modi must next tackle benami or proxy-owned property, used often to park black cash.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi alleged that 15 to 20 Industrialists who were close to Modi were running the country and the demonetization exercise was simply an exercise to ‘take from the poor to give to these rich industrialists.’

“Mark my words, while all you poor people are standing in line to deposit your notes, the Modi government would soon use this cash to forego the debts of these 15 to 20 industrialists. In the last one year debts of these industrialists worth Rs 1.10 Lakh crore has been written off by the Modi government.” said Rahul Gandhi.

CPI (M) General SecretarySitaram Yechury took a dig at Modi by comparing him to French Queen Marie Antoinette. “It reminds me of Marie Antoinette who during the French Revolution said if they (people) don’t find bread, why don’t they eat cakes. Now, we have Modi Antoinette who says: ‘If you don’t have paper, use plastic’.”

But Modi strongly defended his currency move claiming that demonetization had equalized the rich and the poor. He asserted that his decision to scrap notes of high denomination was taken in the “interest and happiness of the poor,” the good of the country and the farmer.

US President Obama meets with German Chancellor Merkel, praises her leadership

BERLIN (TIP): The world is a lot different than when then-presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke to a euphoric Berlin crowd in 2008. After a visit to Greece, he was back in Germany – first for talks, a press conference and a private dinner Thursday, November 17 with Chancellor Angela Merkel and then a meeting Friday, with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain. That Obama and the others are visiting Merkel is a sign of her importance in a world facing crises in Syria, Iraq and Ukraine. His farewell foreign visit also comes on the heels of the election of Donald Trump, whose victory has caused shock waves in Europe.

Obama spent most of his time huddling with Merkel, his closest counterpart who is now Europe’s most powerful leader as the continent prepares for Trump’s presidency.

She expressed guarded optimism about Trump Thursday, her controlled demeanor barely reflecting an iota of worry about the man who lambasted her as a candidate. She praised Obama for facilitating a smooth transition, and said she was approaching Trump with an “open mind.”

As her European counterparts face political challenges at home, Merkel has assumed a critical role in transatlantic ties, voicing strong support for Obama’s priorities on climate change, Russian sanctions and economic reform.

The personal chemistry between the leaders was on display Thursday, Obama winking as he sat for talks in Merkel’s chancellery, and Merkel grinning as she anticipated a visit from Obama in his post-presidency.

    “I’m game!” she said.

The German leader has not yet said whether she’ll run for a fourth term next year, though her political allies have signaled she will. Like leaders in France, Britain, the US and elsewhere, she’ll face challenges from far-right politicians who are running on an agenda of populist nationalism.

Obama declined to push her to run Thursday, but suggested he would vote for her if he was German.

President Obama praised German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a joint press conference in Hannover. He said he would continue to admire “his friend and partner Angela” as a private citizen, after he leaves office.

  • Ban on Immigrants to end Incredible US Experience: Joe Biden

Ban on Immigrants to end Incredible US Experience: Joe Biden

WASHINGTON (TIP): Describing the contribution of the Indian-American community as breathtaking, outgoing Vice President Joe Biden has warned that any effort to stop the flow of immigrants to the US would end the incredible American experience.

“The amazing contribution of the Indian-American community is breathtaking because many of you and your friends came here not out of some sense of …the Diaspora that ended up in Delaware were the most educated people when they arrived in America. As a matter of fact, they made it hard for other people,” Biden said at the Diwali reception held at his residence.

“The day we shut things down, the day we cut these out, the day we decide to go back … that is happening now, that’s getting to the end of this great incredible experiment,” he said.

Organized in association with Indiaspora, it was attended by some top Indian-American leaders and several current and past members of his Administration from this community.

“You are incredible group of Americans,” he said welcoming the guests as he commended Diwali as celebration that opens its arms to people of all faiths.

In his remarks, Biden congratulated three new Indian-Americans elected to the House of Representative on November 8 — Pramila Jayapal (from Washington State), Raja Krishnamoorthi (from Illinois) and Ro Khanna (from California).

The Gold Star father Khizr Khan and his wife Ghazala Khan were the special invitees for the event. In the middle of his remarks, Biden asked them to the podium.

Biden praised Khan for taking a strong stand against religious hatred during the general elections, he appealed to the attendees not to be disappointed by the results of the election.

“This is America…This is kind of who we are,” Biden said referring to Khan. “You reminded millions of Americans why there is hope and faith. I will say you that the fact that the other team won does not mean that that was rejected,” Biden said.

“We lost because of awful lot of hardworking Americans who live in areas where we did not pay much attention to. Barack Obama won these people. They are not racist. They did not vote for the Democrats this time,” he said.

Vice President Biden identified globalization as among one of the key reasons for the Democratic party defeat.

Globalization, despite all its advantages, hurt people in the US.

“I do not want anybody to walk away thinking that you know because Donald Trump says some awful things…He is the most unpopular elected President in American history. Just as Hillary was very unpopular. There has been no election in American history when the negatives of both the candidates have been this high,” Biden said.

“I do not care what your political affiliation is we have to not give up. One election will not change America,” he added.

WASHINGTON DC (TIP): Hillary Clinton, in her first public speech since last week’s crushing presidential loss, admitted making the appearance “wasn’t the easiest”.

Clinton was speaking at the Children’s Defense Fund’s “Beat The Odds” Gala on November 16 night. “I will admit, coming here tonight wasn’t the easiest thing for me,” Clinton said. “There have been a few times this past week where all I wanted to do was curl up with a good book and our dogs and never leave the house again.” Nevertheless, she attempted to inspire her audience and emphasized a line of Martin Luther King Jr. that is oft quoted by President Barack Obama throughout her speech: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Her speech was part reflection, part pledge to remain strong in the face of a Trump administration. “We have work to do, and for the sake of our children and our families and our country, I ask you to stay engaged, stay engaged on every level,” Clinton said. “We need you. America needs you, your energy, your ambition, your talent. That is how we get through this.”

Sen. Warner to serve as Vice Chairman of Senate Intelligence Committee

WASHINGTON (TIP): It was announced, November 16, that U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) will serve as the Vice Chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in the 115th Congress.

“With a new administration starting to assemble its national security team, I look forward to fulfilling the Committee’s primary responsibility to provide vigorous and bipartisan oversight,” said Sen. Warner. “One of things I value most about my service on the Intelligence Committee is the tradition of members leaving partisanship at the door when we enter the committee room. In a dangerous world, the responsibilities of the Intelligence Committee are more essential than ever.”

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence was created by the Senate in 1976 to “oversee and make continuing studies of the intelligence activities and programs of the United States Government,” to “submit to the Senate appropriate proposals for legislation and report to the Senate concerning such intelligence activities and programs,” and to “provide vigilant legislative oversight over the intelligence activities of the United States to assure that such activities are in conformity with the Constitution and laws of the United States.” While all Senators have access to classified intelligence assessments, access to intelligence sources and methods, programs, and budgets is generally limited to the fifteen members of the Intelligence Committee and by law, the President is required to ensure that the Committee is kept “fully and currently informed” of intelligence activities.

Sen. Warner, who joined the Intelligence Committee in 2012, has been a leader in the Senate on issues surrounding cybersecurity, and co-founded the bipartisan Senate Cybersecurity Caucus earlier this year. He has been a leader in focusing oversight efforts on how the intelligence community plans for, acquires, and operates national security space systems. He is the lead sponsor of annual resolutions marking Intelligence Professionals Day, and currently is urging the U.S. House of Representatives to pass legislation unanimously adopted by the Senate to award the OSS Gold Medal Act before the 114th Congress adjourns.

In addition to serving as the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, Senate Democratic Leader-elect Charles E. Schumer announced today that Sen. Warner will continue to hold a leadership role within the Democratic caucus as Vice Chair of the Conference in the 115th Congress.

Donald Trump Transition Team announces Five-Year Lobbying Ban for those who want to join Administration

WASHINGTON (TIP): Two top Republicans working with President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team told reporters in a phone call Wednesday, November 16 evening that they’re taking steps toward one of Trump’s campaign promises – to “drain the swamp” in Washington.

Trump communications director Jason Miller and Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer announced anyone being vetted for a high post in the administration must provide a termination of lobbying form if they are a registered lobbyist.

In addition, when officials leave the government, they will be banned from being a lobbyist for five years as part of the agreement to serve in Trump’s administration. “Not only will people will not be able to registered state or federal lobbyists, but when they leave government, they will be banned from being a registered lobbyist for five years,” Spicer said.

“Why that is crucial is that it goes back to Mr. Trump’s goal of making sure that people aren’t using the government to enrich themselves and using their service in government to do that,” he added. President Barack Obama imposed a two-year lobbying ban for officials who left his administration, a policy instituted by executive order on his first day in office.

Any ban on lobbying, however, depends on how it is written and enforced. A common practice in Washington is for key power players not to register as a lobbyist, but instead work as a consultant or adviser – allowing them to take their experience and contacts to make hundreds of thousands of dollars on K Street. “That’s the problem with the system – the system,” Trump said. “We’re doing a lot of things to clean up the system. But everybody that works for government, they then leave government and they become a lobbyist, essentially. I mean, the whole place is one big lobbyist.”

Trump said relying on lobbyists now while planning to eliminate them later is no contradiction. “I’m saying that they know the system right now, but we’re going to phase that out. You have to phase it out,” Trump said.

  • Japan’s PM Abe has “very candid discussion” with Trump; says confident can build trust

Japan’s PM Abe has “very candid discussion” with Trump; says confident can build trust

NEW YORK (TIP): Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he had a “very candid discussion” Thursday, November 17, with US President-elect Donald Trump.

The pair met in New York in an “unofficial” capacity, Abe told reporters, as Trump has not yet assumed the presidency, according to a CNN report.

The CNN report said, “Abe stressed that he emerged feeling that the US and Japan will be able to maintain a ‘relationship of trust’ with Trump as president”.

The sit-down with Abe was Trump’s first in-person meeting with a foreign head of state since he clinched the presidency last week.

It comes after Trump’s repeated suggestions during the campaign that Japan should shoulder a bigger financial burden regarding US military forces stationed in the region.

“I am very honored to see the President elect ahead of other world leaders,” Abe told reporters before his departure.

“The Japan-US alliance is the axis of Japan’s diplomacy and security. The alliance becomes alive only when there is trust between us.”

While vague, this statement would be reassuring to the Japanese public, Jeffery Kingston, director of Asian studies at Japan’s Temple University, told CNN.

“Abe has invested a lot of critical capital in strengthening alliance with the US, and would have been worried to see his entire agenda go up in the air,” he said.

“By meeting Trump, Abe wants to show the rest of the world that the US and Japan still stand side by side.”

A top aide to Abe, Katsuyuki Kawai, said that he’d been told by members of Trump’s transition team that Trump’s previous remarks should not be taken literally.

Abe declined to say if the two men hashed out the defense issue or discussed their disagreement over the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal, but stressed that he emerged “convinced that Mr. Trump is a leader in whom I can have confidence.”

“I conveyed my various views on different issues, but since he hasn’t assumed the office, I would like to refrain from touching on details,” Abe said.

During the campaign, Trump alarmed Japan and South Korea, two of America’s strongest allies, by suggesting they were free-riding on US security commitments.

Particularly jaw-dropping were the suggestions that Japan, which until last year had a pacifist constitution, should obtain nuclear weapons to protect itself from North Korea.

Abe’s meeting with the President-elect “sends a reassuring signal that despite Trump’s rhetoric, things remain more or less on track,” Kingston said.

Brad Williams, a professor of international relations at the City University of Hong Kong, told CNN that the early meeting was brought on in part from Japanese concern for the future of the US-Japanese alliance and owing to practical concerns.

“Abe is on the way to the APEC summits, so he would have flown through the US anyway,” he said.

Koichi Nakano, a political scientist at Sophia University was more skeptical of the Trump-Abe meeting. Nakano told CNN that the Japanese administration had rushed to see Trump even before he assumed office while he was busy forming a new administration.

“What is there to gain, I have no idea?” said Nakano. “(Abe) is not talking to a president yet.”

How future relations between Abe and Trump will play out remain to be seen. Kingston, however, suggested that the Trump-Abe relationship could be off to a good start given the kind of leaders Abe looks favorably on.”If you look at who Abe admires around the world, he likes strong leaders like Putin, Modi and Erdogan, who have despotic tendencies,” he said. DESIERTO MOVIE REVIEW

STORY : A group of Mexicans cross over the border to the US illegally, but run into a psychotic killer, who doesn’t want immigrants to step foot in his country.

CAST: Gael García Bernal, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Alondra Hidalgo, Oscar Flores, Marco Pérez

Direction: Jonás Cuarón GENRE: Thriller DURATION: 1 hour 36 minutes

REVIEW : Desierto was released in the US way back in 2015 (it was Mexico’s entry to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film category), but its Indian release could not have come at a more appropriate time. Using the worn-out premise of a lone killer and his hapless victims who have to fight for survival, Jonás Cuarón, the son of Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuarón, gives us a tense thriller that throbs with topical urgency following Donald Trump’s victory in the recent US elections.

The film’s antagonist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is the kind of person who would have cheered at Trump’s electoral plank of building a wall along the border of Mexico to stop immigrants from taking over the jobs of Americans. “It is my home,” he says to himself in the initial few minutes after shooting dead over a dozen hapless Mexicans who have crossed over the border, armed only with the hope of finding a better future in the ‘Land of the free’. But a handful manage to escape. Does anyone among these survive or do they all fall victim to their hunter’s cruel game?

Cuarón just gives us snippets of information and hardly any insights into any of these characters: one of these immigrants (Gael García Bernal) is a man trying to get back to his little son in the US, while another is a young woman (Alondra Hidalgo) whose parents had forced her to leave her home town because they felt it was too dangerous for her! And we never know why the hunter exhibits such extreme hatred.

This minimalist approach is both the film’s strength and weakness. Given that it wants to be a political commentary, we wish the film had dug deeper, but taken simply as a thriller, Cuarón has provided us with a visually impressive film (cinematographer Damian Garcia’s wide frames superbly capture the vastness and the bleakness of the landscape) that keeps us engrossed.

There is nothing which can be called as mainstream or art film. There are only good films and bad films.”

“We make films so that audience can enjoy it, leave their troubles behind, and lose themselves into that story and those characters. And I believe I am going to make good films,” she said.

Gandhi has written and directed critically acclaimed plays like ‘Sugandhi’, ‘Pratyancha’, ‘Kshanotsav, Na and Janashtaru’ and a Gujarati play ‘Chal Reverse Ma Jaiye’.

The movie will be an adaptation of one of his plays and Kajol’s husband and actor Ajay Devgn will produce it. Kajol, 41, also spoke about the concept of beauty.

  • CINDY CRAWFORD SLAMS FASHION INDUSTRY FOR WANTING THINNER MODELS

CINDY CRAWFORD SLAMS FASHION INDUSTRY FOR WANTING THINNER MODELS

Model Cindy Crawford has slammed the fashion industry for wanting females to be ‘thinner’.

The 50-year-old, who was among the first group of catwalk icons in 1980 era alongside Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, says that the fashion business has drastically changed for the worst since she began modelling and believes catwalk stars are

‘expected’ to be a size zero, reports. “I have a daughter who is entering this world, and the expectation is for them to be even thinner now. I was always a size six; I was never super-skinny and I never felt bad about it. You could have boobs, you could have hips, you could have a little extra flesh. Now, the models are expected to be so much thinner,” Crawford told. Crawford has 17-year-old son Presley and 15-year-old daughter and budding model Kaia with her husband Rande Gerber.

“When every model is expected to be a size zero, I don’t necessarily think that is a great message for women. The biggest change that I have seen for the young women that are modelling today is even more pressure to be even thinner,” she said. Source: IANS
