This was announced by Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Deputy Consul General of India in New York, at an outreach event organized at TV Asia in Edison, NJ. Mohapatra said that the consulate was working on 24 hours and seven days basis in order to provide timely assistance to individual visa seekers, who were in dire and unique situations. He invited applicants to open houses at the Consulate so that their issues were resolved. The consulate holds open houses every first and third Wednesday of every month.

Responding to a question about killing of Indian professional in Kansas, Dr. Mohapatra commented that Government of India was very concerned about cases of violence against Indian citizens who were victim of hate or other kinds of crimes. He pointed out the Government of India gave priority to the unfortunate incident that took place in Kansas where an Indian professional Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed by a gunman. “We acted very quickly to address the situation. As we talk here, Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s foreign Secretary, was in Washington holding talks with senior members of the Donald Trump administration on various issues for mutual interests.

The outreach event was also utilized to extend a warm reception to a group of diplomats from Washington who visited Indian market in Edison and Jersey City in New Jersey. The five US diplomats showcased their Hindi speaking proficiency. They surprised an audience of community leaders and professionals from wide areas of businesses and occupation, when they spoke in fluent Hindi. All diplomats were studying Hindi language at the institute prior to their postings in India.

Michael Rosenthal, Political Unit Chief, Office of India Affairs, US Department of State, who led the group, said that he and his colleagues were due for their posting in India in the coming months. “We are learning Hindi and Indian culture at the Foreign Service Institute run by the State Department”, he said adding that thousands of US diplomats attend language and culture classes prior to their overseas postings. Rosenthal said that as a part of his language studies he and his four colleagues visited shops and interacted with businessmen in Jersey City and Edison townships. The group was welcomed by HR Shah, Chairman, TV Asia.

Addressing the gathering Nathaniel Farrer, a member of the group, said in Hindi, “He and his colleagues enjoyed watching Hindi movies and often debate about the acting talents of Bollywood actors. “We are yet to agree about who among Amir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan is the better actor”, he said jokingly.

Pushpa Patel, a Hindi instructor at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, was visibly in tears to see her student perform so well in Hindi. “They prepared their own script for this occasion. I am so happy they are learning Hindi very well”, she commented.

Jewish centers in US cope with bomb threats; graves vandalized

WASHINGTON (TIP): Rabbi Joshua Bolton of the University of Pennsylvania’s Hillel center surveys damaged headstones at Mount Carmel Cemetery on Feb. 27, 2017, in Philadelphia.

Jewish centers and schools across the nation coped with another wave of bomb threats Monday as officials in Philadelphia made plans to repair and restore hundreds of vandalized headstones at a Jewish cemetery.

Jewish Community Centers and day schools in at least a dozen states received threats, according to the JCC Association of North America. No bombs were found. All 21 buildings 13 community centers and eight schools were cleared by Monday afternoon and had resumed normal operations, the association said.

It was the fifth round of bomb threats against Jewish institutions since January, prompting outrage and exasperation among Jewish leaders as well as calls for an aggressive federal response to put a stop to it.

“The Justice Department, Homeland Security, the FBI, and the White House, alongside Congress and local officials, must speak out and speak out forcefully against this scourge of anti-Semitism impacting communities across the country,” said David Posner, an official with JCC Association of North America. “Members of our community must see swift and concerted action from federal officials to identify and capture the perpetrator or perpetrators who are trying to instill anxiety and fear in our communities.”

  • RUSSIA’S TOP DIPLOMAT AT CENTER OF TRUMP CONTROVERSY

RUSSIA’S TOP DIPLOMAT AT CENTER OF TRUMP CONTROVERSY

The Trump administration’s back-to-back controversies over its Russian ties now have at least one thing in common: Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Moscow’s top diplomat in the US has become the Kevin Bacon of the Trump White House’s Russia imbroglio. A Washington fixture with a sprawling network, he has emerged as the central figure in the investigations into Trump advisers’ connections with Russia. In a matter of weeks, contact with Kislyak led to the firing of a top adviser to the president and, on Thursday, prompted calls for the attorney general to resign.

Separately, a White House official confirmed Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn met with Kislyak at Trump Tower in December for what the official called a brief courtesy meeting. Flynn was pushed out of the White House last month after officials said he misled Vice President Mike Pence about whether he and the ambassador had discussed US sanctions against Russia in a phone call.

At issue Thursday were two meetings between Sessions and Kislyak – one in July and another in September, at the height of concern over Russia’s involvement in hacking of Democratic officials’ emails accounts. Intelligence officials have since concluded Moscow ordered the hacks to tilt the election toward Trump. In his confirmation hearing, the Alabama Republican denied having contact with any Russian officials, neglecting to mention the meetings with Kislyak, which were first reported by the Washington Post.

The Russian Embassy did not respond to a request for comment.

Although the White House dismissed the revelation as part of a political witch hunt, Sessions’ former colleagues took the omission seriously. At the urging of some in his own party, Sessions recused himself from the Department of Justice’s investigation. Still, Democrats called for him to step down.

Observers note Kislyak is a somewhat unlikely figure to cause controversy. Over the course of a long diplomatic career, he’s led the life of a somewhat typical global envoy – making himself a reliable presence on the circuit of receptions, teas and forums that make up the calendar of any ambassador.

Kislyak, who was appointed to his post in 2008, is regularly spotted walking around town, heading to and from meetings. Early in his tenure, he often opened the doors of the Russian Embassy, hosting dinners for foreign policy professionals, Pentagon officials, journalists and Capitol Hill staffers.

Those who have attended the events describe him as a gracious and amiable diplomat, although perhaps not as polished – nor as confrontational – as his more famous boss, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

In 2015, when Kislyak invited a group of Washington-based journalists, including one from the Associated Press, to the Russian Embassy for tea, he used the meeting to push warmer relations between the two nations – despite the conflict over Russia’s seizure of Crimea and the crisis in Ukraine.

Kislyak framed US-Russian relations as salvageable and hoped specifically to combat what he considered cartoonish, anti-Russian depictions of his government in the American press. At a press conference where he recused himself from the investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties with Russia, Sessions said he discussed a number of things with Kislyak, including counterterrorism. He said the meeting became confrontational when the discussion turned to Ukraine.

Kislyak, 66, has bounced between the United States and Russia for most of his long career.

His first foreign posting was to New York where he worked at the Soviet delegation at the United Nations in the early 1980s. He spent the following years as the first secretary and then councilor at the Soviet Embassy in Washington before returning to Moscow in 1989, where he took a succession of senior jobs at the Foreign Ministry.

He did a stint as Russian ambassador to Belgium and simultaneously served as Moscow’s envoy at NATO. He then returned to Moscow to serve as a deputy foreign minister, overseeing relations with the United States and arms control issues before being sent to Washington.

Kislyak’s contacts have sparked questions about his role or involvement in the hacking, questions that are difficult to answer.

The US and Russia, along with many other countries, have made it a practice to separate their top diplomats from espionage activities, although it is not uncommon for an intelligence agent to operate under the cover of a senior-level diplomat. Foreign diplomats to the United States likely expect that their activities will be monitored by US authorities in the same manner that American diplomats are monitored in countries like Russia.

Russian ambassadors most likely are aware of the intelligence agents operating under diplomatic cover, but are not believed to part of the security services themselves.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Thursday ridiculed the claims of Kislyak’s involvement in espionage as “total disinformation” and part of efforts to sway public opinion.

“I’ll open a military secret for you: It’s the diplomats’ jobs to have contacts in the country they are posted to,” she said sarcastically. “It’s their obligation to meet with officials and members of the political establishment.” (AP)

Barack, Michelle Obama sign bumper book deal

New York based publisher Penguin Random House has won the book industry’s most coveted contract: a deal to produce the memoirs of former president Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

“The company has acquired world publication rights for two books, to be written by President and Mrs Obama respectively,” the publisher said in a statement.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but bidding for the high-profile double book deal topped $60 million, a record sum for US presidential memoirs, according to the Financial Times.

The deal was negotiated by Washington super-lawyer Robert Barnett who represented former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

As part of the agreement “the company will donate one million books in the Obama family’s name to First Book,” a charity, Penguin said.

Barack Obama is already the author of two memoirs and a children’s book.

He has frequently declared himself to have a “writer’s sensibility” and has said he does not want to write a conventional blow-by-blow account of his time in the White House.

Michelle Obama’s memoir is likely to be just as eagerly anticipated.

A descendant of slaves, she became the first African-American first lady and garnered high approval ratings.

“We are very much looking forward to working together with President and Mrs. Obama to make each of their books global publishing events of unprecedented scope and significance,” said Penguin Random House CEO Markus Dohle. (PTI)

Indian man’s house trashed with dog poop, racial messages

PEYTON (TIP): An incident of possible hate crime has come to light in a US town where a house of an Indian man was trashed with eggs, dog poop and hate messages.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case which took place in Southern Colorado on February 6.

Authorities believe it was the work of group of people because of the all the damage.

According to reports in Denver media, hateful messages and racial slurs were sprawled all over the home of the Indian man.

The homeowner said that around 50 papers were stuck everywhere on his door, window and car and added that the unidentified group had thrown at least like 40 eggs on his house.

He further said that racial slur like ‘You brown or Indian shouldn’t be here,’ was also written outside the house.

The homeowner says despite the hate, he was reminded of compassion. He says his neighbours came together and completely cleaned up the house for him.

The ‘Get out of my country’ Tragedy: A Himalayan Blunder #SpecialReport

“We should also be afraid of the recurrence of such happenings in the future. All-leaders and general public, Republicans and Democrats, citizens and immigrants, and the media-have a part to play in this”, says the author – A. D. AMAR, PHD.

When, in January 2016, I formally endorsed Donald J. Trump for president and promoted his candidacy by founding and leading a political action committee for the purpose, I was afraid that while some of the radical policies that he espoused were essential to bring the revolutionary changes needed to revive America’s economy and glory, they also could be misconstrued by the overzealous people who are likely to be stimulated by the situations resembling what they know from the media or experience from their environment.

The shooting in Olathe, Kansas of two Indian engineers that resulted in the killing of one is exactly what I had feared, but hoped would never happen. Nevertheless, people going astray and becoming violent rather than working to bring change through peaceful, legal routes is what Mohan K. Gandhi called the Himalayan Blunder, when he had engaged in nonviolent revolution to take back India from the British Empire. Throughout his fight for the change, he always remained cognizant of the kind of happenings we saw in Olathe, Kansas.

We should also be afraid of the recurrence of such happenings in the future. All-leaders and general public, Republicans and Democrats, citizens and immigrants, and the media-have a part to play in this. While it is true that we have come out of a highly contentious election, we have to accept that it is over. Donald Trump, for right or wrong, is the president; and it is natural for him to work to realize the controversial agenda on which he won. We also know that he will be president for these four years and will be voted out if he does not do what Americans approve.

First onus for this falls on President Trump, his administration, and the Republican leadership. Like Gandhi, they have constantly to remind their supporters that by remaining law abiding, they will help Trump and his cause. Moreover, Trump should strongly condemn those who engage in lawless activities. The second responsibility for this falls on the Democratic leaders. They have to remind continuously their followers not to engage in activities that spread hate; and should condemn those who do. The third obligation to keep peace in America rests with the media. They should not directly or indirectly give any message that can potentially promote intolerance and hate, resulting in lawlessness. Finally, we all should resolve to remain peaceful and use legal methods to express our discontent.

Such happenings can be avoided if we all play a role in keeping everyone calm. Otherwise, the blood of innocents like Srinivas Kuchibhotla, victim of Olathe shooting, will be on all who engage in acts that incite hate and intolerance.

I also want the world to know that America is not the country of Adam Purinton, the shooter of Olathe, but also of Ian Grillot who intervened in behalf of Srinivas Kuchibhotla against Purinton at the risk to his life. America is fighting its problems; therefore, what is happening here is temporary. We, all Americans, will come back stronger as a nation.

(The author is Professor of Management, the Stillman School of Business, Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ 07079. Founder-President of Indian-Americans for Trump 2016, he also serves on the leadership council of the Republican Hindu Coalition)

Hate Crime killing of Indian in Olathe shooting condemned

Indian American Lawmakers strongly condemned the killing of Indian engineer by an American navy veteran in an apparent hate crime in Olathe, Kansas.

On Feb 22 Feb. 22 at Austin’s Bar and Grill in Olathe, 51-year-old Navy veteran and former air traffic controller Adam Purinton said “get out of my country” before opening fire on the two men, both engineers at Garmin Ltd., killing 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla and injuring Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot.

“As details emerge about the nature of this crime, it is disturbing for all Americans that a potential hate crime could happen here. Racism and xenophobia have no place in America, and I have full confidence that the investigating agencies will determine whether this crime was motivated by prejudice. As a nation of immigrants, it is not who we are to attack someone based on where they come from or what they look like. This senseless attack on these young men is a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families”, said Congressman Ami Bera (CA-7).

“My condolences go out to the families of the men involved in this senseless incident of violence in Kansas City. Any act of violence fueled by hatred and xenophobia and prejudice cannot be tolerated. I have faith in local and federal law enforcement to justly investigate this shooting as a hate crime”, said Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17).

“My thoughts are with the victims and families shaken by the shooting in Kansas. Senseless acts of violence have no place in our country. I’m heartbroken by this tragedy,” said Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal.

“We can’t let hatred win,” said Indian-American Senator from California Kamala Harris. “Extremely saddened to hear the news out of Kansas. My sympathies go out to the victims and their families,” the Democratic Senator said in a tweet.

Calling this as a senseless act of violence in Kansas City, Congressman Ro Khanna remarked, “Any act of violence fuelled by hatred and xenophobia and prejudice cannot be tolerated. I have faith in local and federal law enforcement to justly investigate this shooting as a hate crime.”

“This was an attack not only on the victims, but on the sense of security of Indians, Indian Americans and millions of other people of color across the nation,” Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., said in a statement.

US-India Political Action Committee has also strongly condemned the killing, calling it “heinous” and “barbaric”. Expressing shock over the killing, USINPAC Chairman Sanjay Puri said, “We strongly condemn the killing of Srinivas Kuchibhotla. We have reached out the Department of Justice and asked for quick action on these and other such hate crimes around the country. This incident needs to be treated as a hate crime. We continue to monitor this situation along with other racially motivated incidents around the country.”

    Mona_Darling MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: A Facebook friend request from a missing girl is linked to sudden deaths in this college campus. The police are befuddled by it and the missing girl’s best friend tries to get to the bottom of this with help from her geeky pal.

REVIEW: Set in contemporary ‘cyber world’, Mona_Darling is among the new breed of movies that tries to bank on the popularity of social media and the huge part it plays in our lives. However, it fails to be anything more than a stereotype of similar movies that have been around the subject, both in Bollywood and Hollywood.

Set in a hostel campus, Mona_Darling starts the exercise in stereotyping from the word go, as a bunch of drunk college students ham up about a friend request they get on social media from the college hottie, Mona (Suzanna Mukherjee). The guys, who look like they need a good bath, are chewed up and the police are called to investigate the mysterious deaths. A parallel investigation is undertaken by Mona’s best friend Sarah (Divya Menon) who ropes in the socially awkward, stereotypical, fruit-munching geek named Wiki (Anshuman Jha). College Dean Chaturvedi (Sanjay Suri) too helps in the search as more as more deaths occur. However, when Mona herself is found dead and the friend request still don’t cease, the story goes into horror territory as it tries to keep you guessing whether it’s a ghost or human who has done the deed. More stereotypes occur in the form of MMS scandals, creepy librarians and so on.

As far as thrillers are concerned, some essential elements are a tight story, an unexpected twist and a couple of nice frights. In this one, all three are missing. There are only about four or five good, hearty frights and the first half is painfully slow in establishing the mystery. The only reason to watch the second half is to know who is killing everyone; a ghost, the internet or are you merely being taken on a ride. A saving grace is the twist, which is so weak that one can spot it fairly early in the second half and just wait to be proven right. Its conclusion is decent, but until then almost two, unentertaining hours have elapsed. Shot stylishly, this movie is high on style and low on substance.

The only effort that Anshuman Jha, who was acclaimed for his role in Love Sex Aur Dhokha does, is to look young and recite gibberish medical terms. Suzanna Mukherjee shows promise and has a decent screen presence while Divya Menon too is convincing as the troubled friend.

  • Logan — MOVIE REVIEW

    Logan — MOVIE REVIEW

    STORY:

Set in 2029, the film begins at a time when mutants are on the verge of extinction, Charles Xavier’s (Sir Patrick Stewart) school doesn’t exist anymore and he along with Logan (Hugh Jackman) lead an austere life hiding near the Mexican border before getting embroiled in a life and death situation.

REVIEW: After 17 years of playing one of the most popular characters in the X-Men franchise, Hugh Jackman (Wolverine/ Logan) naturally has a lot riding on his hunky shoulders in Logan — the third and last installment in the solo Wolverine series. Don’t expect to see the X-Men in all their glory because the characters have aged and been through the fires. Xavier’s declining mental and physical health (he’s in his 90s now) and Logan’s ageing body almost make us feel sorry for the two characters. While Logan earns a living by driving a limousine, getting drunk and getting into fights, Xavier’s disintegrating mind compels him to stay sedated in order to keep his colossal psychic powers under control. The film has a lot of gory scenes —there’s plenty of bloodshed thanks to Logan’s notorious adamantium claws — so be prepared. But what shines through the action are the number of emotional moments between the lead characters, making it the most moving film of the franchise so far.

Debutant Laura Kinney/ X-23 (Dafne Keen) at 11, will give tough competition to other actresses her age. With skills and claws just like Logan’s, the feisty youngster is being hunted down by a group of merciless troublemakers, who’re led by Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook). Logan and Xavier unwillingly become a part of the plan to save Laura and the trio embark on a dangerous adventure, which forms the crux of the film. It’s interesting to see how the relationship between the three characters plays out and how despite initial resistance from Logan, the trio become an unlikely family.

What makes the movie different from other superhero flicks is the way director James Mangold has dealt with the subject — without hesitating to show his ageing superheroes go into battle while they fight their own inner demons. Also, the highlight of the film is Jackman’s compelling performance. He knows it is his swan song and he exits with a flourish — an unforgettable end to a remarkable odyssey. You don’t have to be a comic superhero fan to enjoy this movie — watch it for the outstanding performances by Jackman, Stewart and Keen. This one’s a gripping finale to Wolverine’s indomitable journey.

NASA MAY SEND ROBOTIC SPACECRAFT TO SUN NEXT YEAR

WASHINGTON (TIP): NASA plans to send its first robotic spacecraft to the Sun next year that is slated to get within six million kilometres of the blazing star to probe its atmosphere.

Humans have sent spacecraft to the Moon, Mars and even distant interstellar space. Now, NASA plans to launch the Solar Probe Plus mission to the Sun which is about 149 million kilometres from the Earth.

“This is going to be our first mission to fly to the Sun,” said Eric Christian, a NASA research scientist at Goddard Space Flight Centre.

“We can’t get to the very surface of the Sun,” but the mission will get close enough to answer three important questions, Christian said.

First, the mission will hopefully unveil why the surface of the Sun, called the photosphere, is not as hot as its atmosphere, called the corona.

According to NASA, the surface temperature of the Sun is only about 5,500 degrees Celsius. However, the atmosphere above it is a sizzling two million degrees Celsius.

“You would think the farther away you get from a heat source, you would get colder. Why the atmosphere is hotter than the surface is a big puzzle,” Christian said.

The scientists also want to know how solar wind gets its speed, ‘Live Science’ reported. “The Sun blows a stream of charged particles in all directions at a million miles an hour. But we do not understand how that gets accelerated,” he said. The mission may also ascertain why the Sun occasionally emits high-energy particles that are a danger to unprotected astronauts and spacecraft.

NASA has designed a 11.4 centimetres carbon-composite shield, which is designed to withstand temperatures outside the spacecraft of 1,370 degrees Celsius.

The unmanned probe will have special heat tubes called thermal radiators that will radiate heat that permeates the heat shield to open space, “so it does not go to the instruments, which are sensitive to heat,” Christian added.

  • New tool to reduce risk of triggering man-made quakes

New tool to reduce risk of triggering man-made quakes

BOSTON (TIP): Stanford scientists have developed a new software tool which will enable energy companies to calculate the possibility of triggering manmade earthquakes from activities associated with oil and gas production.

Oil and gas operations can generate significant quantities of “produced water” – brackish water that needs to be disposed of through deep injection to protect drinking water.

Energy companies also dispose of water that flows back after hydraulic fracturing in the same way.

This process can increase pore pressure – the pressure of groundwater trapped within the tiny spaces inside rocks in the subsurface – which, in turn, increases the pressure on nearby faults, causing them to slip and release seismic energy in the form of earthquakes.

“Faults are everywhere in the Earth’s crust, so you can’t avoid them. Fortunately, the majority of them are not active and pose no hazard to the public,” said Mark Zoback, professor at Stanford’s School of Earth, Energy at Environmental Sciences.

“The trick is to identify which faults are likely to be problematic, and that’s what our tool does,” said Zoback.

The newly developed Fault Slip Potential (FSP) tool uses three key pieces of information to help determine the probability of a fault being pushed to slip.

The first is how much wastewater injection will increase pore pressure at a site. The second is knowledge of the stresses acting in the earth.

This information is obtained from monitoring earthquakes or already drilled wells in the area. The final piece of information is knowledge of pre-existing faults in the area.

Such information typically comes from data collected by oil and gas companies as they explore for new resources.

Researchers have started testing their FSP tool in Oklahoma, which has experienced a sharp rise in the number of earthquakes since 2009, due largely to wastewater injection operations.

Their analysis suggests that some wastewater injection wells in Oklahoma were unwittingly placed near stressed faults already primed to slip.

“Our tool provides a quantitative probabilistic approach for identifying at-risk faults so that they can be avoided,” said Rall Walsh, graduate student at Stanford.

“Our aim is to make using this tool the first thing that is done before an injection well is drilled,” Walsh said.

  • Man jailed for six years after killing banker with single punch at taxi rank

Man jailed for six years after killing banker with single punch at taxi rank

LONDON  (TIP):Trevor Timon, the man who killed banker Oliver Dearlove with a single punch has been jailed for six years.

The 31-year-old, of Plumstead in south-east London, was cleared of murder earlier this week, but admitted manslaughter after he delivered a “powerful” left hook to Mr Dearlove’s head, knocking him unconscious, the Old Bailey heard.

Mr Dearlove was with friends on their way home from a university reunion, when he approached a group of women who had been out celebrating a birthday with Timon.

Timon launched his attack when a row broke out between the two groups at a taxi rank in Blackheath in south-east London.

The court heard that Timon told his victim: “If you don’t get out of my face I will knock you out”, before hitting him.

Mr Dearlove, aged 30, died in hospital less than 24-hours later.

Timon then escaped to Ireland, after telling one of the women, “I’m scared, seriously, proper.”

He handed himself in days later.

Judge Mark Dennis QC said Mr Dearlove had not been a threat to the group, and described Timon’s punch as an “unprovoked and gratuitous act”.

“This was a senseless death that occurred as a result of an act borne out of a flaw in your character which in the past has seen you display unnecessary violent conduct to others when, for reasons best known to you, you have become annoyed or wound yourself up,” he said.

“Oliver Dearlove was a young man of fine character with a long and promising future ahead of him,” he added.

“His loss in such senseless circumstances has, as the court has heard, caused untold misery for his family and those close to him.

“Many lives have been turned upside down.”

In court Mr Dearlove’s girlfriend Claire Wheatley described the pain at losing her partner, who she described as her “Mr Right”, and a “true gentleman”.

Paying tribute to her boyfriend she said: “Oli and I first met on New Year’s Eve the year 2013. I saw him from across the room and knew instantly that he was something special.” She added: “His death was not the result of an unfortunate event such as a car accident or life-long illness but as the result of a senseless act of one individual in one moment of time, with no real meaning or justification.” In a letter read out in court, Timon said: “There is not a single day that I don’t think of Oliver, his friends and family and the devastating effects my action has caused.” (PTI)

  • SOON, A ‘MAGIC’ DNA COMPUTER THAT GROWS ITSELF

SOON, A ‘MAGIC’ DNA COMPUTER THAT GROWS ITSELF

LONDON (TIP): Scientists have designed a new, super-fast form of a “magic” computer made of DNA molecules that grows as it computes and can outperform all standard systems in solving practical problems.

Researchers from University of Manchester showed the feasibility of engineering a universal turing machine (UTM) -a computer that can be programmed to compute anything any other device can process.Electronic computers are a form of UTM, but no quantum UTM has yet been built.

The theoretical properties of such a computing machine, including its exponential boost in speed over electronic and quantum computers, have been understood for many years but the breakthrough demonstrates that it is possible to physically create a UTM using DNA molecules.

“Imagine a computer is searching a maze and comes to a choice point, one path leading left, the other right.Electronic computers need to choose which path to fol low first,” said researcher Ross King. “But our new computer doesn’t need to choose, for it can replicate itself and follow both paths at the same time, thus finding the answer faster.”

“This `magical’ property is possible because the computer’s processors are made of DNA rather than silicon chips.” “As DNA molecules are very small a desktop computer could potentially utilise more processors than all the electronic computers in the world combined and therefore outperform the world’s current fastest supercomputer, while consuming a tiny fraction of its energy ,” he said.

  • Twitter adds more safety tools, will curb abusive accounts

Twitter adds more safety tools, will curb abusive accounts

Twitter is adding more tools to curb abuse on its service as part of its ongoing effort to protect users from hate and harassment. Among other things, the service will attempt to identify offenders on its own, even if no one has reported them first.

It is the second time in three weeks the company has released new ways to root out abusive material on its service. It’s a sign Twitter is getting more serious about the issue; it’s faced criticism for not doing more in the decade since its founding.

Twitter’s effort to automatically flag abusive accounts is a new twist. Previously, the company would take no action until users reported suspected abuse. Not that long ago, in fact, Twitter required the targets of abuse to make such reports themselves; it refused to take reports from friends, family or other third parties.

Once it identifies accounts that repeatedly engage in abusive behaviour, Twitter will place temporary restrictions on them. For example, tweets from such accounts will be visible only to followers or other users who deliberately search them out.

“We aim to only act on accounts when we’re confident, based on our algorithms, that their behaviour is abusive,” the company said in a blog post .

In addition, Twitter is also giving users the option to filter the notifications they get when someone mentions them in a comment. For example, people will be able to filter out accounts without a profile photo, or unverified email addresses or phone numbers. This can be helpful in screening out accounts that have been set up solely for the purpose of harassment or trolling.

Saudi king Salman visits Indonesia with huge entourage, tons of gear

JAKARTA (TIP): King Salman today began the first visit by a Saudi monarch to Indonesia in almost 50 years, seeking to strengthen economic ties with the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country.

The king — who is accompanied by about 1,000 people, including princes and ministers — disembarked from his official plane at a Jakarta airport+ and was welcomed by President Joko Widodo and a guard of honour.

Almost 460 tons of equipment have been flown in for the visit, including Mercedes limousines and escalators for the king to descend from his plane. Most has been transported to the resort island of Bali, where the king will take a holiday after visiting Jakarta.

It is the first visit by a Saudi Arabian king to Indonesia for 47 years, and is one of the highlights of a rare Saudi royal tour of Asia+ which is seeking investment as the world’s biggest oil exporter tries to diversify its economy.

“This is an extremely historic visit for us,” Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung was quoted as saying in local media before the visit.

Salman will hold talks later with Widodo at the Indonesian leader’s official residence in Bogor outside the capital Jakarta. The king will give a speech to parliament tomorrow.

Business deals could be announced, and a series of cooperation memoranda are also set to be signed on issues ranging from security, to health and education during the three-day visit to Jakarta. (AFP)

  • INSTAGRAM GOES LIVE WITH FULL SCREEN ADS ON ITS STORIES FEATURE

INSTAGRAM GOES LIVE WITH FULL SCREEN ADS ON ITS STORIES FEATURE

Facebook-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram on Thursday said that it was launching full screen advertisements on Instagram’s stories feature globally.

“Ads in stories let your business use targeting and reach capabilities that make your ads personally relevant to the people you want to reach. That, paired with measurement tools giving you the confident to know it works, is unmatched in a stories experience,” the company said in a statement. Earlier, Instagram in January had said that the advertisements would go live soon.

“Today, businesses of every size around the world can start running ads in stories through the Marketing API, Power Editor and Ads Manager optimized for reach. By optimizing for reach, you can show your ads to the maximum number of people in your audience and control how often they see your ads. The reach objective for ads in stories will begin rolling out today and will be available globally in the next few weeks,” the company said.

In a bid to explain the benefit of running the advertisement campaigns, the company had tied up with over 30 businesses to test the ads feature.

“We saw a double digit point increase in ad recall from our experiences on Airbnb campaign that further justifies our investment in ads within stories as they have made a measurable impact for us,” Eric Toda, global head of social marketing and content, said, adding that “our ability to apply existing targeting and measurement in an experience to reach the right audience, in the right mindset, with the right story at scale has allowed us to achieve the results we were hoping for in a partnership with Instagram.”

  • China trying to rope India, Russia in cyber pact against West

China trying to rope India, Russia in cyber pact against West

China wants India and other BRICS countries to accept its idea of “cyber sovereignity” that would allow each country to govern the cyber space in the manner they want without facing interference from other countries. Beijing plans to move a proposal for cross-border agreement on the issue at the next BRICS summit, which China will host, later this year.

“As BRICS host this year, China stands ready to work together with Russia and other BRICS partners”, Long Zhou, Coordinator, Cyber affairs division of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told journalist today after releasing a white paper on international cooperation in the cyber space. China is due to host BRICS summit later this year.

The idea of “cyber sovereignity” flies against calls for Internet freedom in China, which has banned international sites like Goggle, Facebook and Twitter besides scores of foreign media sites. It is encouraging Chinese versions of these sites like Baidu and Sina Weibo, to operate in China which has the world’s highest Internet connectivity+ .

India may be reluctant to accept the Chinese model because much of the Indian IT industry is linked to western markets, where the Internet is largely free.

The agreement that China is pushing among members of BRICS and SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Agreement), smacks of a pact against what it regards as western hegemony over the Internet world.

China, Russia and Central Asian counties are members of SCO. India and Pakistan which have observer status, are expected to be made a fulfleged member of SCO soon.

China is trying to persuade world governments and international agencies including the United Nations to accept the principal of “cyber sovereignity” that allows each country to govern the Internet in the manner it wants to without interference from other governments. Long said Beijing was trying to extend the existing principal on land, air and sea soverignity, which is recognized by the UN, to the cyber world because the problems and situations are similar.

Chinese officials maintain that the internet is free in China, and only a small section of websites that “undermine” the country’s national interests are banned. But officials did not explain how these international sites hurt China’s national interests.

“The Chinese Internet is fully open,” said Wang Jianchao, International Cooperation Department of the Cyberspace Administration of China. “As long as they comply with Chinese laws and regulations+ , refrain from undermining China’s national interests and interests of Chinese consumers, all Internet companies are welcome in China.”
