The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, may survive on meat and fish products in the refrigerator or the freezer for up to 30 days, a study suggests.
The research, recently published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, was conducted using chicken, beef, pork, and salmon, and surrogate viruses with spikes similar to those on SARS-CoV-2. The researchers stored the meat and fish products at both refrigeration (4 degrees Celsius) and freezer temperatures (minus 20 degrees C).
“Although you might not store meat in the fridge for 30 days, you might store it in the freezer for that long,” said study first author Emily S. Bailey, an assistant professor at Campbell University in the US. “We even found that the viruses could be cultured after (being frozen for) that length of time,” Bailey said in a statement. The researchers undertook the study after learning that COVID-19 outbreaks were occurring in Southeast Asia prior community transmission.
Reports from those communities “suggested that packaged meat products, produced in areas where SARS-CoV-2 was circulating, could have been the source of the virus,” said Bailey.
“Our goal was to investigate whether or not similar viruses could survive in this environment,” she said. The research is important because SARS-CoV-2 can replicate within the gut, as well as in the respiratory tract, said Bailey. In the study, the researchers used one RNA virus with a lipid envelop, and two animal coronaviruses, murine hepatitis virus, and transmissible gastroenteritis virus as surrogates. All three viruses have previously been used as surrogates for SARS-CoV-2, generally with greater reductions in their numbers observed at refrigeration than at freezing temperatures.
The reduction in numbers also varied according to the food item used. Source: PTI
Poor gut health is at times the root cause of many diseases be it physical or psychological. There are many reasons why our digestive health suffers from seasonal change, travelling, work stress to faulty lifestyle choices. Many gut issues could be resolved with easy remedies.
Ginger
What it does: Ginger has long been touted as a natural remedy for seasickness. Turns out, it really does do wonders for tummy issues. Ginger has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help decrease the excessive stomach acids that can cause nausea and indigestion. How to get the benefits: Suck ginger lozenges or use fresh ginger directly from your pantry, adding the spice to meals you’re making. You can also sip ginger tea. This is particularly beneficial for morning sickness during pregnancy. To make it, peel and slice two inches of fresh ginger root and add it to a pot of water. Bring that to a boil for 10 minutes and then strain. Wait until it’s reached room temperature to enjoy.
Chamomile
What it does: Chamomile is an anti-inflammatory that helps relax the muscles in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and decrease GI contractions caused by an upset stomach. How to get the benefits: Sip it as a warm tea, and you’ll get double the benefits. The heat will provide added benefit by further relaxing painful stomach cramps.
Rice
What it does: When you’ve got a case of diarrhea, cook up some rice. That diarrhea is caused by bacteria releasing toxins, which increases fluid in the GI tract. But because rice is a bulking agent, it can help absorb some of the fluid in the gut and decrease the amount of loose stools.
How to get the benefits: Eat half a cup of rice with meals to alleviate some of your discomfort.
Intermittent fasting
What it does: Feeling a little bloated? Try intermittent fasting. Gut motility is the underlying issue for many people with bloating. Through fasting, you can optimize the motility of your small bowel.
How to get the benefits: Try doing a 16:8 cycle (where you fast for 16 hours and eat during an eight-hour window) for just a few days.
Bananas
What it does: Credit banana’s magnesium and potassium content for helping relax muscle spasms and cramps. Bananas can also help curb diarrhea. How to get the benefits: Fortunately, you don’t need to eat a whole bushel of bananas. Just nosh your normal amount whenever you’re experiencing these symptoms.
Yoga
What it does: If you’ve got trapped gas—and thus bloating and constipation—yoga could be a good salve. “Twisting poses are said to stimulate the gut.
How to get the benefits: When your gut isn’t feeling so good, sit down and do 10 minutes of yoga poses, including half lord of the fishes pose, supine spinal twist, and revolved chair twist.
Kefir or Yogurt
What it does: The active cultures and probiotics in these two foods can help combat the bad gut bacteria which are often responsible for bloating, poor digestion and stomach pains by increasing the amount of available good bacteria in your gut.
How to get the benefits: When buying kefir or yogurt, avoid those with lots of additives and sweeteners. Instead, choose plain, unsweetened versions and consume a regular serving size, typically about a half cup, once or twice a day.
New Delhi (TIP)- Netflix and Microsoft have announced a partnership to launch the streaming giant’s first ad-supported subscription. The development comes months after Netflix announced a new ad-supported offering amid the company’s shrinking subscriber base. Both companies shared the latest news in separate blogs, though it still remains unclear when the new ad-supported model will roll out. Details of the subscription are also yet to be revealed. Microsoft says the company is “thrilled” to be named Netflix’s technology and sales partner. Marketers looking to Microsoft for their advertising needs will have access to the Netflix audience and connected TV inventory. All ads served on Netflix will be exclusively available through the Microsoft platform. Netflix claims that its existing ads-free basic, standard and premium plans will continue to be available to new and old customers. Speaking more about the partnership, Netflix COO Greg Peters said, “It’s very early days, and we have much to work through. But our long-term goal is clear: More choice for consumers and a premium, better-than-linear TV brand experience for advertisers.”.
Earlier this month, Reuters reported Netflix started talks with Warner Bros, Universal, and Sony Pictures Television to introduce the ad-supported subscription model. It may mean that the new model may not cover its entire catalogue, but only select titles from its in-house production unit and big Hollywood studios. However, it is just speculation, and more details are awaited.
Netflix had said it lost 200,000 subscribers in its first quarter, falling well short of its forecast of adding 2.5 million subscribers. The company is facing formidable competition from Disney and Amazon amid a weakening economy, the Russia-Ukraine war where it lost 700,000 members, and high subscription prices. Source: India Today
New Delhi (TIP)- The Indian rupee on July 15 weakened to 79.96 levels against US dollar. So far this year, the US dollar is up 7% against the Indian currency. The US dollar today was near 20-year highs against a basket of other major currencies. Oil prices rose today amid prospects of a less aggressive U.S. rate hike, although gains were capped by demand recovery worries.
The major drag for the rupee continues to be the FII selling which has exceeded $30 billion so far this year though the selling has eased in recent days.
Analysts sat that the red-hot inflation data in the US has raised the case for a full percentage point rate hike at the Fed’s meeting later this month, given the Fed chair’s stance that inflation must be brought down as quickly as possible. Data released on Wednesday showed US annual consumer prices jumped by a scorching 9.1% in June, the highest in four decades, topping expectations of an 8.8% rise. The Fed has already raised rates three times this year.
“The aggressive policy course by the US Fed to curb rising price pressures is exacerbating fears of a weakening growth outlook and leading to risk aversion in the markets. Besides, we have seen a relentless rise in the dollar index, while the euro has been hit hard as it tumbled below parity against the dollar for the first time in almost 20 years. Europe is grappling with an energy supply crunch owing to sanctions on Russia that make it more susceptible to recession risks,” said Sugandha Sachdeva, Vice President – Commodity and Currency Research, Religare Broking Ltd.
“This has led to a big moment depicting strength in the greenback as markets are expecting the US Fed to raise rates way more swiftly than its peers. Going forward, it remains to be seen whether the euro can hold around the psychological parity level and regain some lost ground. All eyes would now be on the ECB meeting lined up next week and that will provide further cues about the rupee-dollar exchange rate. Considering the macroeconomic backdrop, the Indian rupee has its eyes set on the 81 to the dollar mark in the near term,” she said.
Wholesale inflation eases to 3-month low of 15.18% in June
The wholesale price-based inflation eased to a three-month low of 15.18% in June on a sharp decline in the prices of minerals, but food articles continued to remain costly.
June is the 15th consecutive month when the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation remained in double-digit. Last month, it touched a record high of 15.88%. In June 2021, it was 12.07%.
Inflation in food articles in June was 14.39%, as prices of vegetables, fruits and potato witnessed a sharp spike over the year-ago period. In May, the wholesale price inflation in food articles was 12.34%. The rate of price rise in vegetables was 56.75%, while in potato and fruits, it was 39.38 and 20.33%, respectively. The WPI inflation in minerals dropped sharply to 8.55% in June from 33.94% in May. In the fuel and power basket, inflation was 40.38%, while in manufactured products and oil seeds, it was 9.19% and 2.74%, respectively. Inflation in crude petroleum and natural gas was 77.29% in June. Icra chief economist Aditi Nayar said minerals and basic metals displayed a sharp month-on-month correction in June 2022, as fears of an impending global recession unfolded, dampening commodity prices. “We expect the WPI inflation to ease to 13% in July 2022, reflecting the ongoing correction in global commodity and fuel prices as well as domestic food prices,” Nayar said.
She said the RBI could hike interest rates by 60 bps over the next two reviews, taking the repo rate to 5.5% by September 2022, followed by a pause to ascertain the momentum of economic growth.

The Ministry of Finance on July 13 said it has slapped a notice on Chinese mobile maker Oppo, as Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has detected Customs duty evasion of Rs 4,389 crore against the company. “After completion of the investigation, a show-cause notice has been issued to Oppo India, demanding Customs duty amounting to Rs 4,389 crore. The said notice also proposes relevant penalties on Oppo India, its employees and Oppo China, under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962,” the ministry said.
It further said, during an investigation of Oppo Mobiles India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corporation Ltd, the DRI has detected Customs duty evasion of Rs 4,389 crore. Searches were conducted by the DRI on the office premises of Oppo India and residences of its key officials, which led to the recovery of “incriminating evidence, indicating wilful misdeclaration in the description of certain items imported for use in the manufacture of mobile phones,” the Ministry of Finance said, adding: “This misdeclaration resulted in wrongful availment of ineligible duty exemption benefits by Oppo India amounting to Rs 2,981 crore.”
Among others, senior management employees and domestic suppliers of Oppo India were questioned, who in their voluntary statements accepted the submission of wrongful description before the Customs authorities at the time of import, it added. Source: TNS
Pakistan has reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund, a milestone that would pave the way for the release of an additional $1.2 billion in loans and unlock more funding. The IMF will also consider extending the facility to the end of June 2023, it said in a statement Wednesday, June 14. The accord will make additional funds available once approved by the board, increasing the extended loan facility with Pakistan to about $7 billion, it said. The IMF program “should alleviate fears of a near-term default scenario and unlock funding from other multilateral lenders,” Nicholas Yap, head of Asia credit desk analysts at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Hong Kong, wrote in a note. Pakistan’s rupee, dollar bonds and stocks rose as investors cheered the prospect of a bailout. The country requires at least $41 billion through June next year to keep the foreign-exchange stock at a “respectable” level and repay debts, the finance minister has said. The nation’s dollar bonds due in December was indicated 2.2 cents higher at 90.04 per dollar, while debt due in April 2031 was quoted 0.2 cents higher.

Nikkei Asia reports that camera maker Nikon will discontinue further development of its single-lens reflex (SLR) camera lineup, leaving the longtime professional standbys behind and shifting its efforts to smaller mirrorless models.
For its part, Nikon has denounced the report as “speculation” and stresses that the company “is continuing the production, sales, and service of digital SLR.” But this rebuttal does not mention the development of future SLR cameras—the company’s last new DSLR, the Nikon D6, was released in February 2020, and the company discontinued its entry-level D3500 and D5600 DSLR cameras last month. The Nikkei report indicates that Nikon’s development efforts will shift to mirrorless cameras, which are smaller and more lightweight.
Early mirrorless cameras generally couldn’t match the image quality or lens selection of DSLR cameras, and their electronic viewfinders lagged behind the real-time previews that a DSLR’s optical viewfinder could provide. But newer mirrorless cameras have largely addressed those shortcomings while retaining their smaller sizes and lighter weights. Mirrorless cameras also usually offer superior video quality, which is useful for people who need their cameras to multitask.
A sparkling landscape of baby stars. A foamy blue and orange view of a dying star. Five galaxies in a cosmic dance. The splendors of the universe glowed in a new batch of images released on Tuesday, July 12, from NASA’s powerful new telescope. The unveiling from the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope began Monday at the White House with a sneak peek of the first shot — a jumble of distant galaxies that went deeper into the cosmos than humanity has ever seen.
Tuesday’s releases showed parts of the universe seen by other telescopes. But Webb’s sheer power, distant location from Earth and use of the infrared light spectrum showed them in a new light that scientists said was almost as much art as science.
“It’s the beauty but also the story,” NASA senior Webb scientist John Mather, a Nobel laureate, said after the reveal. “It’s the story of where did we come from.”
And, he said, the more he looked at the images, the more he became convinced that life exists elsewhere in those thousands of stars and hundreds of galaxies.
With Webb, scientist hope to glimpse light from the first stars and galaxies that formed 13.7 billion years ago, just 100 million years from the universe-creating Big Bang. The telescope also will scan the atmospheres of alien worlds for possible signs of life. “Every image is a new discovery and each will give humanity a view of the humanity that we’ve never seen before,’’ NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said Tuesday, rhapsodizing over images showing “the formation of stars, devouring black holes.” Webb’s use of the infrared light spectrum allows the telescope to see through the cosmic dust and see faraway light from the corners of the universe, scientists said.
“We’ve really changed the understanding of our universe,” said European Space Agency director general Josef Aschbacher.
The European and Canadian space agencies joined NASA in building the telescope, which was launched in December after years of delays and cost overruns. Webb is considered the successor to the highly successful, but aging Hubble Space Telescope.
Some of Hubble’s most stunning images have been shots of the Carina nebula, one of the bright stellar nurseries in the sky, about 7,600 light-years away. Webb project scientist Klaus Pontoppidan decided to focus one of Webb’s early gazes on that location because he knew it would be the frameable beauty shot. The result was an image of a colorful landscape of bubbles and cavities where stars were being born. “This is art,” Pontoppidan said. “I really wanted to have that landscape. It has that contrast. We have the blue. We have golden. There’s dark. There’s bright. There’s just a sharp image.” On tap for release Thursday: A close-up of Jupiter that shows one of its faint rings and a few of its moons, he said.

Castor oil is said to be one of the most effective oils when it comes to treating knee pain or hair issues. It works like magic. Made from castor seeds, the natural oil is said to have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that help with hair problems.
With the changing weather, many people suffer from various skin problems such as rashes, redness, pigmentation, and so on. As the oil is rich in fatty acids such as omega-3, it helps in building up new skin cells and removing dead and dry skin. If you are suffering from the problem of pigmentation, let’s take a look at the way to castor oil and help you get rid of it.
Castor oil with lemon and honey
To remove pigmentation on the skin, take an equal quantity of honey and lemon juice and mix it with one spoon of castor oil. Mix all three things well in a bowl and then, apply it like a pack on your face. Leave it for 30-40 minutes and then wash your face with mild face wash. For effective results, repeat the process twice a week.
Castor oil with aloe vera gel and Vitamin E
Make a face pack by mixing two capsules of Vitamin E, aloe vera gel and one spoonful of castor oil. Make a thick paste and apply it to your skin. After applying, massage your face in a circular motion for a few minutes. Leave it for 30 minutes and then, wash your face with cold water.
Castor oil with turmeric, gram flour
Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric with one spoon of castor oil and gram flour. Mix it well and make a thick paste. Massage it on your skin in a circular motion with your fingers for a few minutes and then, leave it for about half an hour. After it gets dry, wash your face with lukewarm water. The antibacterial properties of turmeric help in removing tanning and pigmentation.
Coconut oil for hair growth
Coconut oil is filled with fatty acids and vitamins that make hair grow faster. It is a dream of many people to get shiny, voluminous hair, however, exposure to pollutants, weather, and hair styling products wreak havoc on our hair, making them dry and brittle. Applying coconut oil to hair regularly keeps the scalp moisturized and nourished to prevent breakage. Additionally, it also protects our hair from the harsh environment, thereby making them stronger and healthier.
It effectively treats split ends
Do you hate going to a salon to get a haircut? When your hair grows, with time, they become dry, and its ends start to break leading to “split ends.” With coconut oil, you won’t need to get a haircut too often to treat split ends as it absorbs into hair strands perfectly, thereby preventing hair breakage and split ends. According to a study, coconut oil also helps retain the protein in hair, thereby promoting hair growth and preventing split ends. You can use coconut oil as a conditioner or a hair mask to effectively reduce the occurrence of split ends.
It makes hair cuticle stronger
Coconut oil is a perfect remedy for hair growth and thickness as it has healing properties that soften, hydrate, and strengthen hair.
It also keeps your hair protected from environmental damage, which in turn, makes hair cuticles stronger.
It protects hair from heat damage
If you want to keep styling your hair without causing damage to them, it is important to use coconut oil. Simply, massage a small amount of coconut oil on your hair before you style them to protect hair from heat. Source: News18 and Pinkvilla
Getting ghosted might be a newer way of saying it. But someone suddenly “disappearing” in a relationship is nothing new. And, no matter what you want to call it, it can be very painful for the person who was ghosted. Unfortunately, we know how tough these situations can be for people. Whether it’s in our relationship counseling the individual work we do with clients in trauma therapy, we often hear these stories of ghosting and see the pain first hand that people go through when it happens. Being ghosted essentially means someone leaves or stands you up without warning. No phone calls, no text messages, and no explanations.
It’s more common in first dates or early on in relationships, but it does happen sometimes after a relationship has lasted for a significant period of time. Sometimes it’s because the person was looking for another relationship or was having an affair. It’s also very common in our online dating world. This type of dating However, it’s also common to get ghosted in a long-term, serious relationship. Unfortunately, that often makes the experience even more painful.
Dealing with getting ghosted in a serious relationship is difficult. While you can’t ignore the feelings completely, there are things you can do to make the process of getting through it easier.
Give Yourself Time to Get Over It
Any kind of breakup or separation in a long-term relationship is difficult. Especially when the breakup blindsides you. After all, experiencing the pain of your partner simply “vanishing” is dreadful. One of the biggest mistakes people make is acting as though it doesn’t bother them or trying to move on right away.
While moving on eventually is important, it’s equally important to give yourself time to grieve the relationship. Let your emotions out and find someone who will listen to how you feel. It can help to have a support system in place. Friends, family, or even a therapist can help you deal with the things you might be feeling. There needs to be a mourning period when something like this happens in a relationship. Keep in mind that it won’t last forever. In fact, you can give yourself a “cut off” period. But, before that time, don’t be afraid to really set your emotions free and do what you need to grieve. We also recommend mindfulness work, because this can help people find more contentment in the present. Mindfulness can be described as practicing present awareness of feelings, while also recognizing that they’ll pass. It’s hard to remember that in the moment, but it’s true that no emotion can last forever or at an extremely intense level.

Actor Rhea Chakraborty has been charged on Wednesday, July 13, for buying drugs for her actor-boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput, who died in 2020, by the country’s anti-drugs agency.
The Narcotics Control Bureau on Tuesday in its draft charges filed in the drug case linked to actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death had claimed actor Rhea Chakraborty received multiple deliveries of ganja from the co-accused, including her brother Showik, and these were handed over to Rajput.
The Central anti-drug agency had filed the draft charges last month in the Special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Court against 35 accused, the details of which were made available on Tuesday. As per the draft charges, all the accused entered into criminal conspiracy between March 2020 and December that year with each other or in groups to procure, purchase, sell and distribute drugs in “high society and Bollywood”.
It also said the accused had financed drug trafficking and consumed ganja, charas, cocaine and other narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances without valid licence, permit or authorization within the Mumbai Metropolitan region. Therefore, they have been charged under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, including sections 27 and 27 A (financing illicit traffic and harbouring offenders) 28 (punishment for attempts to commit offences), 29 (whoever abets, or is a party to a criminal conspiracy), as per the draft charges. The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard libel trial, which generated intense interest for two months earlier this year as a livestreamed, no-holds-barred soap opera featuring one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, is not fading away quietly. Earlier this month, Heard’s lawyers filed a 51-page motion asking Judge Penney Azcarate to set aside the jury’s verdict, which gave $10 million to Depp and $2 million to Heard on competing defamation claims. The motion cites multiple reasons that the verdict is untenable, from the surprising decision to declare both sides victorious to one extent or another, to a bizarre case of mistaken identity with one of the jurors.
Depp sued for $25 million in Fairfax County after Heard wrote a 2018 op-ed piece in The Washington Post about domestic violence in which she referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” The article never mentioned Depp by name, but his lawyers said several passages in the article defamed him by implication by referring to highly publicized abuse allegations she made in 2016 as she filed for divorce. Heard then filed a $50 million counterclaim, also for defamation. By the time the case went to trial, her counterclaim had been whittled down to a few statements made by one of Depp’s lawyers, who called Heard’s abuse allegations a hoax.
The jury awarded $15 million to Depp and $2 million to Heard on her counterclaim. The $15 million judgment was reduced to $10.35 million because Virginia law caps punitive damages at $350,000.
Heard’s lawyers say in court papers that the $10 million verdict is unsupported by the facts, and seems to demonstrate that jurors failed to focus on the fallout from the 2018 op-ed piece — as they were supposed to do — and instead just looked broadly at the damage Depp’s reputation suffered as a result of the alleged abuse.
Depp’s lawyers, though, say the damages are supported by testimony from his agent and others. They say the precedents cited by Heard’s team to support her arguments “are decades old, and none involves an international A-list celebrity.” Source: AP
Calling Tom Cruise ‘irrelevant’, actor Mickey Rourke said in a new interview that he has ‘no respect’ for the Top Gun star because he hasn’t been pushing himself as an actor. Rourke, himself an Oscar nominee, disregarded the billion-dollar success of Top Gun: Maverick and said that ‘money and power’ doesn’t mean anything to him.
In an appearance on Piers Morgan’s show, Rourke was asked about Cruise, whose already successful career recently reached new heights with Maverick. “That doesn’t mean sh*t to me,” he said. He added, “The guy been doing the same part for 35 effing years. I got no respect for that. I don’t care about money or power. I care about… when I when I watch Al Pacino or Christopher Walken working, or De Niro’s early work and Richard Harris and Ray Winstone, that’s the kind of actor I want to be like. A lot of guys that tried to stretch as actors.”
Once one of the most popular young stars in Hollywood, Rourke’s career was derailed in the 90s following a brief sabbatical from acting. He made an attempt at a comeback in the 2000s, with roles in Sin City and his Oscar-nominated performance in The Wrestler. He followed it up with a villain role in Iron Man 2, but has since failed to capitalise on his career resurgence.
Mallika Sherawat will soon be seen in the upcoming film, RK/RKAY. In a recent interview, the actress claimed that what Deepika Padukone did in her latest release, Gehraaiyaan, she did 15 years ago in Murder. She also said that a section of the industry always spoke about her body and glamour, but not her acting abilities. Along with Deepika, Gehraiyaan also starred Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa.
The Pyaar Ke Side Effects actress further compared her role in Murder to Deepika Padukone’s role in in Gehraiyaan. “The heroines are more confident about their bodies as well. Such hue and cry was created when I did Murder. People said all kinds of things about the kiss and the bikini. What Deepika Padukone did in Gehraaiyaan, I did that 15 years ago, but people were too narrow-minded back then,” she added. She also accused the film industry of torturing her by just talking about her body and not her acting skills. “I should tell you that a section of the industry and media was mentally torturing me. These people only talked about my body and glamour, not my acting. I worked in Dashavataram, Pyaar Ke Side Effects and Welcome but none talked about my acting,” she said. Source: India Today

New Delhi (TIP)- Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), on Thursday, July 14, became the latest non-National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA)-party to announce its support for presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu. JMM being an ally of the Indian National Congress, extended its support to the presidential candidate after she visited Jharkhand seeking the party’s support. “For the first time after Independence, a tribal woman is going to get the distinction of becoming the President. Therefore, after due deliberation, the party decides to vote in favour of Ms. Droupadi Murmu,” said JMM chief Shibu Soren. Over the past few weeks, the NDA candidate has received support from numerous parties who are part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
One such is Uddhav Thackeray’s, Shiv Sena.
On Monday, 11 out of the 13 MPs from Sena who attended a meeting called by Thackeray, pitched for a rapprochement between the party and the rebel faction led by Shinde. Supporting Murmu would be part of this effort, people aware of the matter said. The next day, Sena chief addressing a press briefing announced his support for her. Thackeray insisted that this decision was not made under pressure and that he is “not so small-minded” to not support a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and rival Telegu Desam Party, also agreed on Murmu’s nomination. TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday said that the party is committed to social justice resulting in them supporting the tribal leader for the top post. Likewise, Punjab’s Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), having two MPs in the Lok Sabha and three MLAs in Punjab also extended their support to Murmu in early July when BJP president JP Nadda reached out to the party president Sukhbir Singh Badal to support NDA’s nomination.
“She (Murmu) has emerged as a symbol of the poor and tribal segments in the country,” reads a resolution passed by the SAD’s top leadership after a three-hour-long meeting at the party’s headquarters. Badal added, despite the two parties’ political differences, “we have decided to choose the right path”. Earlier, SAD had cut ties with the saffron party over the farm laws.
The presidential election is scheduled for July 18. A combined 17 opposition parties have nominated former Union minister Yashwant Singh as their presidential candidate, as the NDA fielded Droupadi Murmu, a tribal from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj, as their candidate. Source: HT
New Delhi (TIP)- After outrage over a Lok Sabha secretariat booklet terming the use of certain words ‘unparliamentary’, Speaker Om Birla issued a clarification saying members are free to express their views and no words have been banned in Parliament. “It’s a routine practice continuing since 1959. No words have been banned. Members are free to express their views. No one can snatch that right (away from members) but (expression of views) should be as per decorum of Parliament,” the Speaker said. “Earlier, a book of such unparliamentary words used to be released. To avoid wastage of paper, we have put it on the internet. No words have been banned, we have issued a compilation of the words that have been expunged,” he added.
He further said that the decision to expunge certain words was taken keeping in mind the objections raised by certain members of Parliament.
“Words that have been expunged have been used in the Parliament by the Opposition as well as the party in power. Nothing like selective expunging of words used by only the Opposition,” the Speaker said at a press conference.
Earlier, the Lok Sabha secretariat released a booklet terming the use of words like ‘jumlajeevi’, ‘baal buddhi’, ‘Covid spreader’ and ‘Snoopgate’ and even commonly used words like ‘ashamed’, ‘abused, ‘betrayed’, ‘corrupt’, ‘drama’, ‘hypocrisy’, and ‘incompetent’ as “unparliamentary” in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The diktat came ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament, slated to begin on July 18. Words like ‘anarchist’, ‘Shakuni’, ‘dictatorial’, ‘taanashah’, ‘taanashahi’, ‘Jaichand’, ‘vinash purush’, ‘Khalistani’ and ‘khoon se kheti’ would also be expunged if used during debates or otherwise in both the houses.
Words listed as unparliamentary include ‘anarchist’, ‘gaddar’, ‘girgit’ (chameleon), ‘goons’, ‘ghadiyali ansu’ (crocodile tears), ‘apmaan’ (disrespect), ‘asatya’ (untruth), ‘ahankaar’ (vanity), ‘corrupt’, ‘kala din’ (black day), ‘kala bazaari’ (black marketing), and ‘khareed farokht’.
On Thursday, July 14, the Congress, Trinamool Congress slammed the ‘gag order’ and said terms used by the Opposition will now be considered unparliamentary. Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi termed the compilation as the “New Dictionary for New India”. He shared the adjective of the word “unparliamentary” and said, “Words used in discussion and debates which correctly describe the PM’s handling of the government, now banned from being spoken.”
TMC’s Derek O’Brien said, “Now, we will not be allowed to use these basic words while delivering a speech in Parliament: Ashamed. Abused. Betrayed. Corrupt. Hypocrisy. Incompetent. I will use all these words. Suspend me. Fighting for democracy.”
Words and expressions are declared unparliamentary from time to time by the Chair of different Legislative bodies in the country. They have been compiled by the Lok Sabha Secretariat for ready reference in the future. However, the Rajya Sabha Chairman and the Lok Sabha Speaker will have the last word in expunging words and expressions.
