    COMEDIAN RUSSELL PETERS RETURNS TO NJPAC WITH ‘ACT YOUR AGE’ WORLD TOUR!

    Canadian comic, actor and producer Russell Peters is taking the world by storm on his new Act Your Age tour. You know the Peabody- and Emmy-winning stand-up from his TV appearances, world tours and hilarious specials, including ‘Outsourced,’ ‘Red,’ ‘White & Brown,’ ‘The Green Card Tour,’ ‘Almost Famous’ and ‘Deported.’ He also holds the honor of being the very first comedian to have a special on Netflix (‘Notorious’). Peters was awarded the 2013 Trailblazer Award by the Association of South Asians in Media, Marketing and Entertainment (ASAMME) for his contributions to comedy. He is among the first South Asians to achieve international success in the field.

    Russell Peters was recently named one of Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Comics of All Time. At nineteen, he started doing stand-up at open mics in his native Toronto and spent the next fifteen years honing his craft at clubs across Canada and the UK. In 2004, Peters gained critical and global recognition for his CTV “Comedy Now!” unique and soon became the first comedian to sell-out Toronto’s Air Canada Centre in 2007. Peters set attendance records at venues from Madison Square Garden to The Sydney Opera House to London’s O2 Arena to Singapore’s Indoor Stadium – where he broke the UK attendance record for the highest number of tickets sold for an individual comedy show. In 2013, Peters became the first comedian to create a Netflix Original Comedy Special. Peters’ most recent tour, ‘The Deported World Tour,’ was seen by over 400,000 fans in 40 cities across 20 countries and culminated in the stand-up unique Russell Peters Deported on Amazon Prime in January 2020. Peters has been awarded a Gemini, Peabody, Emmy, and Canadian Screen Awards for hosting, producing, and acting talents.

    His last TV series, ‘The Indian Detective,’ a Canadian viewership record for Bell Media /CTV in 2017, was released globally on Netflix. It won Peters the ‘Golden Screen Award’ in 2019.

    Peters just launched his Podcast, ‘Culturally Cancelled with Russell Peters’ on iHeartMedia / Cloud 10 and is currently developing a TV series based on his childhood in Canada in the 1980s and executive producing the TV series ‘Late Bloomer’ with YouTube sensation Jus Reign. Peters will also be seen later this year in the feature film ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’ for Paramount Pictures. Peters resides in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

    When not on tour, he spends every day with his eleven-year-old daughter, Crystianna, and three-year-old son, Russell Santiago. He has a blue belt with three stripes Jitsu and is an ardent DJ and hip-hop junkie who tries to get on the turntables for at least a few minutes every day.

    Alton Brown, the host of Food Network’s ‘Cutthroat Kitchen’ returns to NJPAC with a multi-media show that blends science, music and food into delicious entertainment.

    In ‘Alton Brown Live Beyond Eats!’ fans can expect comedy, talk show antics, multimedia presentations, and music (yes, he sings). For this 2022 tour, Brown may also add a slew of fresh ingredients, including new puppets, new songs, plus bigger (and potentially more dangerous) experiments. On television and on stage, Brown has a knack for mixing science, music and food into pure entertainment. According to Brown: “For this new tour, there will be plenty of new therapy-inducing opportunities during our audience participation segments. I don’t want to give too much away, but we’re also going to play a little game with the audience …”

    Dal Bafla

    Ingredients

    2 cups wheat flour, ¼ cup maize flour, ½ cup ghee, 1 tsp cumin seeds, ¼ tsp ajwain, Salt to taste

    1 ½ cups toor dal, soaked, A pinch of hing, 1 tsp red chilli powder, ½ tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp sugar, ½ tsp turmeric powder, Salt to taste, 1 Tbsp desi ghee, 2 Tbsp coriander leaves, chopped

    Method

    In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together to make a stiff dough, adding a little water at a time. Divide the dough into smaller balls, and roll them using your palms to make them smoother. Bring water to a boil in a large pan. Add salt and turmeric, and then drop the balls and cook till they float on the surface. Place them on a kitchen towel to drain excess water. Once they are dried, bake them in the oven at 150 degree C for till crisp and golden on both the sides. Pressure cook the dal in 3 ½ cups of water for 3 whistles, by adding salt and turmeric powder. Let the steam escape and then add the hing and stir well. Add a little water if it is too thick, and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, heat ghee in a pan, add mustard seeds and let it splutter. Add red chilli powder, and quickly pour this tadka in the boiling dal. Add sugar and remove from the flame. Finish with coriander leaves.

    To Serve

    Place two Baflas on a plate, crumble them using your fingers, add a teaspoon of ghee, and pour the dal on top.

    –              Work the product into the hair with a brush and dryer.

    –              Take a side parting and tie your hair into a low ponytail at the nape area and secure it with a rubber band.

    –              Use a curling tong and tong the hair that is in the ponytail to create some movement.

    –              Twist the hair into a low bun and pin it up with bobby pins, pull out a few strands and finish by applying a hairspray for added shine.

    Two top knots

    –              Apply a smoothing cream on your lengths and ends for a soft and smooth texture.

    –              Take a centre parting and divide the hair into two equal parts.

    –              Tie two high ponytails of both sides of the parting and secure them with rubber bands.

    –              Twist the hair in the ponytail and wrap it around to look like a top knot. Secure it with pins.

    –              Repeat the same on both sides.

    Messy ponytail

    –              To achieve the messy ponytail, apply a texturising spray to the lengths and end.

    –              Tie a high pony and secure it with a rubber band.

    –              some loose pieces for a messy effect and finish by spraying a shine hairspray.

    Probiotic ‘backpacks’ can treat inflammatory bowel disease at any stage

    Well-equipped, gut-friendly bacteria can help treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, according to a new study. Combined with probiotics, nanoparticle backpacks could significantly improve, and simplify, IBD treatments, according to research at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the US which was led by Quanyin Hu, a biomedical engineer and professor. “IBD is a complicated disease, and you need to attack it at different angles,” said Hu in a paper published in the journal Science Advances.

    Hu and his colleagues devised specialised nanoparticles to neutralise molecules implicated in IBD.

    They’ve also figured out a way of attaching these nanoparticle “backpacks” to beneficial bacteria after encasing them in a protective coating. The nanoparticle backpacks are part sulfide and part hyaluronic acid. The acid is powerfully anti-inflammatory, and the sulfide directly targets the reactive oxygen species.

    Conducted in mice, the researchers estimated the effects of the treatments in two ways: by measuring changes in weight and changes in the colon length of mice with IBD that did and did not receive the treatment.

    Like humans, mice with IBD commonly experience weight loss and colon shortening as the disease progresses.

    Hu and his colleagues found that mice that received the full treatment experienced the least amount of weight loss and much less colon shortening than their counterparts that received partial or no treatments. “We didn’t want to target a specific IBD stage. We wanted to select the most important factors that contribute to curing or treating the disease at whatever stage,” said Hu. Additionally, the treatment is administered orally, which could make it a palatable alternative to other more invasive forms of IBD treatment such as partial or complete removal of the colon. While the results are promising, it will take some time before the treatments are tested in humans.

    A novel immunotherapy could bolster cancer treatment: Study

    Scientists have found a novel immunotherapy that could bolster the effectiveness of cancer treatment, according to a study. Rather than rally T cells against cancer, scientists have used different human immune cells called natural killer (NK) cells as a novel means to fight cancer, according to a study.

    The team of scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine described findings that could boost the impact of immune-checkpoint therapy, the study said. Findings have been published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.

    Immune checkpoint inhibitors such as Keytruda and Opdivo work by unleashing the immune system’s T cells to attack tumour cells. Their introduction a decade ago marked a major advance in cancer therapy, but only 10 per cent to 30 per cent of treated patients experience long-term improvement, the study said.

    “We believe the novel immunotherapy we have developed has great potential to move into clinical trials involving various types of cancer,” said study leader Xingxing Zang. The surfaces of immune cells are studded with receptors known as ‘checkpoint’ proteins, which prevent immune cells from straying beyond their usual targets, which are pathogen-infected cells and cancer cells. When checkpoint receptors on immune cells bind with proteins expressed by the body’s own normal cells, the interaction puts the brakes on a possible immune-cell attack, the study explained. Diabolically, most types of cancer cells express proteins that bind with checkpoint proteins, tricking immune cells into standing down and not attacking the tumour, the study said. Immune checkpoint inhibitors are monoclonal antibodies designed to short-circuit immune-cell/cancer-cell interactions by blocking either the tumour proteins or the immune-cell receptors that bind with tumour proteins. With no brakes to impede them, immune cells can attack and destroy cancer cells, the study said. The limited effectiveness of checkpoint inhibitors prompted Zang and other scientists to look at checkpoint pathways involving NK cells, which, like T cells, play major roles in eliminating unwanted cells, the study said.   • Aerobic exercise lowers risk of metastatic cancer, says study

    The probability of cancer metastatic spread can be reduced by aerobic exercise by 72 per cent, according to a recent study. The amount of glucose (sugar) consumed by internal organs rises during intense aerobic exercise, according to the researchers, which decreases the amount of energy available to the tumour. The study was led by two researchers from TAU’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine: Prof Carmit Levy from the Department of Human Genetics and Biochemistry and Dr Yftach Gepner from the School of Public Health and the Sylvan Adams Sports Institute. Prof. Levy emphasizes that by combining scientific knowhow from different schools at TAU, the new study has led to a very important discovery which may help prevent metastatic cancer – the leading cause of death in Israel. The paper was published in the prestigious journal Cancer Research and chosen for the cover of the November 2022 issue. Prof Levy and Dr. Gepner: “Studies have demonstrated that physical exercise reduces the risk for some types of cancer by up to 35 per cent. This positive effect is similar to the impact of exercise on other conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. In this study we added new insight, showing that high-intensity aerobic exercise, which derives its energy from sugar, can reduce the risk of metastatic cancer by as much as 72 percent.  If so far the general message to the public has been ‘be active, be healthy’, now we can explain how aerobic activity can maximise the prevention of the most aggressive and metastatic types of cancer.”

    The study combined an animal model in which mice were trained under a strict exercise regimen, with data from healthy human volunteers examined before and after running. The human data, obtained from an epidemiological study that monitored 3,000 individuals for about 20 years, indicated 72 percent less metastatic cancer in participants who reported regular aerobic activity at high intensity, compared to those who did not engage in physical exercise. The animal model exhibited a similar outcome, also enabling the researchers to identify its underlying mechanism. Sampling the internal organs of the physically fit animals, before and after physical exercise, and also following the injection of cancer, they found that aerobic activity significantly reduced the development of metastatic tumors in the lymph nodes, lungs, and liver.

    Neymar sat crying on the bench and later left the stadium limping with a swollen right ankle after Brazil’s 2-0 victory over Serbia at the World Cup. Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said Neymar sprained his ankle.

    “We put ice on it while he was on the bench and then in physiotherapy,” Lasmar said on Thursday, November 25. “There is no test scheduled for now but we will schedule it if needed. He will be under observation. We will know more tomorrow,” he added. Brazil coach Tite said he was “confident that Neymar will continue playing at the World Cup,” but Lasmar said it was too early to comment on the extent of the injury.

    Neymar, who was fouled nine times in the match against Serbia, got injured in the second half and was substituted in the 79th minute. Tite said he stayed on the field for 11 minutes before asking to be replaced.

    “He overcame the injury because the team needed him,” Tite said. “I didn’t even see that he had been injured. He just kept playing.”      Neymar was in tears on the bench as doctors began treating him in the final minutes of the game at Lusail Stadium. He pulled his shirt over his head as doctors taped ice around his foot. He went into the locker room limping, and also limped as he left the stadium without speaking to reporters. “The most important thing for us it to have him at 100 per cent for the next match,” said Brazil striker Richarlison, who scored both goals on Thursday, including one after a buildup started by Neymar.

    Doha (TIP)- Cristiano Ronaldo closed his eyes, took in a deep breath and then made World Cup history. The Portugal striker became the first male player to score at five World Cups with his 65th-minute penalty in a 3-2 win over Ghana on Thursday, November 24. Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana eight minutes later, but Joao Felix regained the lead for Portugal in the 78th and Rafael Leao added a third. Osman Bukari reduced Ghana’s deficit in the 89th. The 37-year-old Ronaldo was looking to showcase his talents to potential new clubs after having his contract terminated at Manchester United this week. After wasting two good chances in the first half, he tumbled under a challenge by Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu to earn a penalty.

    Wheeling away after the ball struck the back of the net, a smiling Ronaldo performed his usual leap and swivel in the air — the crowd roared his trademark “SI-UUU” as he did the pirouette — before getting mobbed by teammates. He has now scored in every World Cup since his first in 2006 and has a record 118 international goals.

    It was a wild finish to a slow-burner of a World Cup match that ended with Portugal defender Danilo clearing the ball away from near the line in the ninth minute of stoppage time. Ronaldo, who was sitting in the dugout after being substituted, put his hand on his head in relief. Ronaldo, naturally, took center stage at the start of his fifth and likely last World Cup, particularly after a fraught buildup to the tournament in which he gave an unauthorized, tell-all interview criticizing Manchester United’s manager, owners and teammates. On Tuesday, he split with the English club, meaning he is in the shop window in Qatar. Another scoring record adds to the luster of his resume. A penalty against Iran in 2006 started his tally of World Cup goals — it is now up to eight in 18 matches — and he lifted the ball beyond Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati with his latest spot kick after a long, theatrical buildup to the penalty.

    Bruno Fernandes arguably played a more important role in Portugal’s win, setting up the team’s second and third goals with perfectly weighted through-balls. Still, Portugal’s players almost threw it away after losing their composure in a chaotic final few minutes, featuring the comical scene of Bukari performing Ronaldo’s “SI-UUU” celebration after his goal.

    In the other Group H match, South Korea and Uruguay drew 0-0.

  • Canadians keep Belgium on toes

    AL RAYYAN (TIP)- Michy Batshuayi scored and Thibaut Courtois saved a penalty as a lacklustre Belgium opened their World Cup campaign on Wednesday, November 23,  with a scrappy 1-0 win over an energetic Canada side returning to the finals for first time in 36 years. Leading the Belgian attack in the absence of injured talisman Romelu Lukaku, Batshuayi scored against the run of play on the stroke of halftime to put the Red Devils top of Group F ahead of Morocco and Croatia who earlier drew 0-0. Despite getting the win, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez was far from satisfied with his team’s lethargic display as the Red Devils managed only nine attempts on goal to 21 for Canada. If not for the lack of a Canadian finisher and a penalty save by Courtois from Alphonso Davies the result could have been very different for second-ranked Belgium. “We win, that’s the most important thing today,” said Martinez. “As always, we still have to grow in this tournament and improve things. Many top teams have lost, because you always have to grow at a World Cup.”

    In their only other World Cup appearance in Mexico in 1986, Canada lost all three matches and failed to score a goal. Despite an inspired effort decades later, the result remained the same as Canada walked off Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium pitch with another loss and failure to find the back of the net. Canada looked as if they would register their long-awaited first goal when Belgium’s Yannick Carrasco handled the ball in the 11th minute and Davies stepped up to take the penalty with the Canadian supporters the Voyageurs roaring. Courtois denied Davies a historic goal by stopping his weak spot-kick.

    The day of Vivah Panchami is considered as an auspicious and holy day according to the scriptures. Vivah Panchami festival is held in almost all Ram-Sita temple areas in India and Nepal. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm especially in Ayodhya. On this day the temples of Ram-Sita are decorated with lamps and flower garlands. The idols of all the deities in the temples are beautified with new clothes and ornaments. On this day in the temples of Ram-Sita marriage-like conversation takes place. This social program is popularly known as ‘Ram Vivah Utsav’. According to astrology, the day of Vivah Panchami is not considered auspicious for marriage. Lord Rama and Mother Sita were married on the day of Vivah Panchami, but then this day is not considered perfect for common people for marriage.     Vivah Panchami Story

    King Dasharath was once approached by Maharishi Vishwamitra, requesting him to allow Ram to guard his Yagna. King Dasharath reluctantly agreed and allowed Prince Ram and Lakshman to go with sage Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra successfully completed his Yagna and returned to Mithila along with Ram and Laxman. During that time, Mithila’s ruler Janak had organised a Swayamvar for Princess Sita.

    The Swayamvar task for all participants was to lift and string a massive bow, Shiva Dhanusha, which was laid resting on the ground. However, it was such a heavy and enormous bow that participants failed to lift it. Sage Vishwamitra then asked Ram, who strung the bow, breaking it into two. King Janak was delighted and got Sita married to Lord Ram.

    Vivah Panchami Rituals

    –              In the morning, devotees bathe and dress in clean, fresh clothes.

    –              The idols of Bhagwan Rama and Mata Sita are decorated.

    –              Bhagwan Ram is given yellow robes, while Mata Sita is given crimson clothes.

    –              ‘Vivah Prasang,’ the sacred Baal-Kand script, was read by either the priest or family members.

    –              Listening to the legend of Lord Rama and Maa Sita’s wedding is believed to bring happiness and blessings.

    –              On this day, reciting the Ramcharitmana ensures a happy and wealthy family life.

    –              The devotion of Bhagwan Rama and Mata Sita would help you in resolving all family conflicts.

    –              Devotees chant devotional and religious songs as well as sacred mantras in praise of the deities (bhajans).

    –              In the  ‘Ramleela,’ the Vivah Panchami takes place in various settings.

    Air India mandates UK-based firm to sell its four Boeing 747-400 jumbo aircraft

    New Delhi (TIP)- Tata Group-owned Air India has mandated UK-based remarketing firm Skytech-AIC for the sale of its four Boeing 747-400 jumbo planes. These aircraft were deregistered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation earlier this year. In a statement on November 21, Skytech-AIC said it has been appointed by Air India to market four Boeing 747-400s for outright sale. The aircraft, which are Pratt & Whitney 4056-powered and were built between 1993 and 1996, are offered for immediate delivery, it added.

    “We are honoured to have been selected by India’s flag carrier, Air India for this important assignment and are delighted to welcome them as a remarketing client alongside similarly leading airlines such as Singapore Airlines Group, Kuwait Airways, Air Greenland and Europe’s TUI Group,” Skytech-AIC Managing Director Julian Balaam said in the statement posted on the company’s website.

    In a statement on Tuesday, an Air India spokesperson said the 747s were a much-loved flagship of its fleet and “we are sad to let them go”.

    The airline is actively evaluating and reviewing the existing fleet to make it future-ready.

    “We look forward to bringing in the latest generation, more fuel efficient and more environmentally friendly aircraft to power Air India’s future aspirations and growth plans. We are sure that many passengers join Air Indians in bidding a fond emotional farewell to the Queen of the skies,” the spokesperson said. Apart from ferrying India’s VVIPs — president, vice president and prime minister — the four jumbo planes were deployed on high-density domestic and international routes.

    In 2020, Air India, which was then owned by the government, received two customised Boeing 777 planes equipped with advanced defence systems for ferrying VVIPs. Subsequently, two jumbo jets were pulled out of operations and prior to that, two such aircraft were grounded. One of the early operators of these planes, Air India had started inducting jumbo aircraft in its fleet from 1971.

    Over the decades, the airline has been phasing out such planes and replacing them with Boeing 777s and Boeing 787s, which are considered more fuel-efficient.

    Beijing (TIP)- Foxconn Technology Group has begun offering 10,000 yuan ( around Rs 1 lakh) to any workers who choose to leave, an unusual decision intended to appease disgruntled new hires who played a central role in violent protests that rocked the world’s largest iPhone factory. Apple Inc.’s main global production partner said in an online notice the sum, to be paid out in two installments, will help smooth the journey home for employees. Many of the 200,000-plus workers at Foxconn’s main plant in Zhengzhou hail from elsewhere in the province or country. But the intent was also to usher out recent employees that the local government had helped recruit, many of whom fuelled tensions among the ranks, a Foxconn spokesperson said on Thursday. The company will replace departing staff though it may take time, the spokesperson added. The incentive, which in general exceeds a month’s wages for Foxconn’s blue-collar staff, is likely to placate some employees who on Wednesday staged a rare violent protest that trained a spotlight on the economic and social toll of Xi Jinping’s Covid Zero strategy. Hundreds of workers clashed with security personnel in the early hours as tensions boiled over after almost a month under tough restrictions intended to quash a Covid outbreak. One factor behind the unrest is that workers found out they wouldn’t receive higher wages they had been promised unless they stayed at the factory through March. The 10,000 yuan payment would compensate people unhappy with that restriction for their travel back home. Mounting dissatisfaction among Foxconn’s ranks threatens to further disrupt production at a plant that cranks out the majority of Apple’s marquee devices for shipment around the world. The US company has already warned it will ship fewer devices than anticipated during the critical holiday quarter, while wait times for iPhones have ballooned in some cases to after Christmas. “We have Apple team members on the ground at our supplier Foxconn’s Zhengzhou facility,” the US company said in a statement. “We are reviewing the situation and working closely with Foxconn to ensure their employees’ concerns are addressed.” Workers streamed out of dormitories in the early hours of Wednesday, jostling and pushing past the white-clad guards they vastly outnumbered. Several white-suited people pummelled a person lying on the ground with sticks in another clip. Onlookers yelled “fight, fight!” as throngs of people forced their way past barricades. At one point, several surrounded an occupied police car and began rocking the vehicle while screaming incoherently.

  • After Twitter, Meta, Amazon and Google, HP Inc to reduce global headcount by up to 6,000 employees

    PC and printer major HP Inc is joining the ongoing tech layoff season and will lay off nearly 4,000-6,000 employees. In the earnings report for its fourth quarter of 2022, the company said it expects to reduce gross global headcount by approximately 4,000-6,000 employees, which is between 7-11 per cent of its workforce.

    “These actions are expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2025,” HP said in a statement late on Tuesday.

    The company announced a ‘Future Ready Transformation Plan’, estimating annualised gross run rate cost savings of at least $1.4 billion by the end of fiscal 2025, and restructuring and other charges of approximately $1 billion.

    HP Inc and its subsidiaries announced fiscal 2022 net revenue of $63 billion, down 0.8 per cent from the prior-year period. “We had a solid end to our fiscal year despite navigating a volatile macro-environment and softening demand in the second half. In Q4, we delivered on our non-GAAP EPS target, while also completing our three-year value creation plan and exceeding our key metrics,” said Enrique Lores, HP President and CEO.

    “Looking forward, the new ‘Future Ready’ strategy we introduced this quarter will enable us to better serve our customers and drive long-term value creation by reducing our costs and reinvesting in key growth initiatives to position our business for the future,” Lores said.

    The Personal Systems net revenue was $10.3 billion, down 13 per cent year over year. The printing net revenue was $4.5 billion, down 7 per cent year over year, said the company.

  • Tatas to acquire Bisleri for up to Rs 7,000 crore: Report

    Tata Consumer Products Ltd will buy Bisleri International for up to Rs 7000 crore, the Economic Times newspaper reported on Thursday, citing the packaged water maker’s chairman Ramesh Chauhan. Tata Consumer Products and Bisleri did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.

    The Tata Group houses its consumer business under Tata Consumer Products Ltd (TCPL) which also sells packaged mineral water under the brand Himalayan and with brands as Tata Copper Plus Water and Tata Gluco in the hydration segment. According to industry observers, if the deal is finalised, it would provide the Tata group FMCG arm a larger play into the fast-growing bottled water segment. The Indian bottled water market was valued at over USD 2.43 billion (around Rs 19,315 crore) in FY2021, said a report from market research and advisory TechSci Research. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.25 per cent on account of increasing disposable income, rising health and hygiene awareness, and increasing product innovation, the report added.

    “Bottled water is gaining popularity among consumers because it is thought to be more hygienic than loose normal water in the market, which is not good for health and is unsafe to drink,” the report said.

    Earth has its own stabilising mechanism that can keep global temperatures within a steady, habitable range, helping bring climate back from the brink. Scientists have long suspected that silicate weathering plays a major role in regulating the Earth’s carbon cycle. “Silicate weathering” is a geological process by which the slow and steady weathering of silicate rocks involves chemical reactions that ultimately draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and into ocean sediments, trapping the gas in rocks, the study explained. The mechanism of silicate weathering could provide a geologically constant force in keeping carbon dioxide – and global temperatures – in check. But there has never been direct evidence for the continual operation of such a feedback, until now, the study said. The results, produced by scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US, are the first to use actual data to confirm the existence of a stabilising feedback, the mechanism of which is likely silicate weathering, the study, published in the journal Science Advances, said. This stabilising feedback would explain how the Earth has remained habitable through dramatic climate events in the geologic past.

    “On the one hand, it’s good because we know that today’s global warming will eventually be cancelled out through this stabilising feedback,” said study author Constantin Arnscheidt. “But on the other hand, it will take hundreds of thousands of years to happen, so not fast enough to solve our present-day issues.” Scientists have previously seen hints of a climate-stabilising effect in the Earth’s carbon cycle – Chemical analyses of ancient rocks have shown that the flux, or the flow, of carbon in and out of Earth’s surface environment has remained relatively balanced, even through dramatic swings in global temperature.

    US chip designer and computing firm Nvidia said it is teaming up with Microsoft to build a “massive” computer to handle intense artificial intelligence computing work in the cloud. The AI computer will operate on Microsoft’s Azure cloud, using tens of thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia’s most powerful H100 and its A100 chips. Nvidia declined to say how much the deal is worth, but industry sources said each A100 chip is priced at about $10,000 (roughly Rs. 8,15,400) to $12,000 (roughly Rs. 9,78,500), and the H100 is far more expensive than that. “We’re at that inflection point where AI is coming to the enterprise and getting those services out there that customers can use to deploy AI for business use cases is becoming real,” Ian Buck, Nvidia’s general manager for Hyperscale and HPC told Reuters. “We’re seeing a broad groundswell of AI adoption … and the need for applying AI for enterprise use cases.”

    In addition to selling Microsoft the chips, Nvidia said it will partner with the software and cloud giant to develop AI models. Buck said Nvidia would also be a customer of Microsoft’s AI cloud computer and develop AI applications on it to offer services to customers. The rapid growth of AI models such as those used for natural language processing have sharply boosted demand for faster, more powerful computing infrastructure. Nvidia said Azure would be the first public cloud to use its Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking technology which has a speed of 400 gigabits per second. That networking technology links servers at high speed. This is important as heavy AI computing work requires thousands of chips to work together across several servers.

    A breakthrough discovery at University of Limerick in Ireland has revealed for the first time that unconventional brain-like computing at the tiniest scale of atoms and molecules is possible.

    Researchers at University of Limerick’s Bernal Institute worked with an international team of scientists to create a new type of organic material that learns from its past behaviour. The discovery of the ‘dynamic molecular switch’ that emulate synaptic behaviour is revealed in a new study in the international journal Nature Materials. The study was led by Damien Thompson, Professor of Molecular Modelling in UL’s Department of Physics and Director of SSPC, the UL-hosted Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals, together with Christian Nijhuis at the Centre for Molecules and Brain-Inspired Nano Systems in University of Twente and Enrique del Barco from University of Central Florida. Working during lockdowns, the team developed a two-nanometre thick layer of molecules, which is 50,000 times thinner than a strand of hair and remembers its history as electrons pass through it.

    Not just SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the US space agency also thinks that humans could stay on the Moon for a longer period in this decade. Howard Hu, who leads the Orion lunar spacecraft programme for NASA, told the BBC that the Artemis missions “enable us to have a sustainable platform and transportation system that allows us to learn how to operate in that deep space environment”. “We’re going to be sending people down to the surface and they’re going to be living on that surface and doing science,” Hu was quoted as saying in the report that came out on Sunday. “It’s really going to be very important for us to learn a little bit beyond our Earth’s orbit and then take a big step when we go to Mars,” he added. Five days into the 25.5-day Artemis I mission, Orion continues on its trajectory towards the Moon. On Sunday, November 20,  the uncrewed Orion had travelled 2,32,683 miles from Earth and was 39,501 miles from the Moon, cruising at 371 miles per hour.

    “It’s the first step we’re taking to long-term deep space exploration, for not just the United States but for the world,” said Hu. “I mean, we are going back to the Moon, we’re working towards a sustainable programme and this is the vehicle that will carry the people that will land us back on the Moon again,” the NASA official noted. The US space agency last week sent its next-generation rocket into space as part of its ambitious, uncrewed Artemis I Moon mission which faced two failed attempts amid years of delays and billions of dollars spent.

    The Space Launch System rocket took off from Cape Canaveral in Florida and sent the Orion spacecraft on its way to Moon’s orbit. The Orion will continue onward to the Moon, which it will orbit for several days before its likely return to the Earth on December 11. In 2025, NASA plans to launch the first crewed Moon landings since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. That will include the first woman and the first person of colour to walk on the Moon.

    Ajay Devgn’s film is high on thrills but it’s still not Drishyam

    They say, there’s a thing about Ajay Devgn’s eyes. They speak for themselves. And it wouldn’t be wrong to go back in time, say 2015 film Drishyam, and look back into the scene where the story begins with a zoom-in into his eyes and we are taken into the misery of the Salgaonkar parivaar. This remains the same in Ajay Devgn’s November 18 release Drishyam 2, along with a few other things that will not let you forget Mohanlal. Let’s look at the whys and hows in detail. Drishyam 2 isn’t a film we recommend to those who haven’t watched the first part. It is a continuation in its truest sense. And it’s made evident with screenshots from the 2015 film Drishyam panning across the 70mm with opening credits. We are soon taken inside Vijay Salgaonkar’s somewhat okay-ish new life with his family amid all the haunting rumours from the past surrounding them. Well, that’s reality. People don’t forget drama and that is what is depicted in the film. Vijay and the Salgaonkar family, consisting of his wife Nandini (played by Shriya Saran), and two daughters, Anju and Anu (Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav), are trying to swim through their past and are attempting to start a new life. However, little do they know that they are far from closure. At least, until the end.

    The director tries to set in the brevity of the situation with constant rain and storms that somewhat depict the seriousness of the scene and it works too. Also, Ajay shines as Vijay in this one. He is smart, ‘chalak’ as the police describe him, and futuristic. And he is a man who knows his sin and is ready to deal with the aftermath of it.

    Shriya Saran plays the innocent Nandini who hasn’t had a single peaceful night’s sleep in the past seven years because the past haunts her. Anju is now dealing with epilepsy that aggravates every time she senses stress. Anu is all grown up but we don’t see a lot of substance to her character. Peace is short-lived for the Salgaonkars after IG Tarun Ahlawat (played by Akshaye Khanna) replaces Tabu. No, not in the film, but in her role. And Akshay does a great job too, with the taunts and grit of an officer, but we wanted more of Tabu. She is sparsely spread across the film and Akshay couldn’t create the dread that Tabu as IG Meera Deshmukh did in the first part.

    In case you are wondering why there’s no mention of Gaitonde (played by Kamlesh Sawant) yet, you have nothing to worry. You’ll hate him in this part too, and there’s more edge to his character than the first one, and this only proves he has been successful in his endeavour. For instance, we love one of his dialogues where he says “Biwi ka birthday bhool sakta hoon, October 2 aur October 3 nahin.”   Source: India Today

Nandamuri, age 60, has been seen in over a hundred films for the last forty years. While the film that he plans to launch in December will be directed by Anil Ravipudi.

    Interestingly the first film that Sonakshi Sinha was ever offered was a Tamil film opposite Kamal Haasan in Hey Ram.

    Sometimes the presumed “obvious” can be misleading, and delving deep into a place can reveal remarkable opportunities, and so Maldives – beyond the beaches present with some stunning tourist interests. Pristine white sand beaches, palm fringed islands and turquoise blue expanse of the Indian Ocean would be the first (and maybe the only) thing that comes to mind when one thinks about Maldives. But I am here to tell you about a different Maldives, buzzing with innumerable experiences, Maldives – beyond the beaches. After all, how many of us would know that Maldives before the 12th century was a Buddhist regime! There are a plethora of things to see and do in Maldives other than vegetating on fine white sand.

    MALE

    The capital city of Male doesn’t really show any signs of a 1400 year old Buddhist past. Although 35 mosques can be found in this seemingly expeditiously built colourful settlement, vestiges of the bygone era can still be traced to the most famous and tallest monument of Male – The Old Friday Mosque, built on a Buddhist Temple. With around 100000 people, the roads are almost crowded with scooters and mopeds. The colorful crisscrossing by-lanes are better to explore the city with every attraction being at an arm’s length. Another interesting fact about Maldives is that no other religion other than Islam can be practiced here, with the entire population being Sunni Muslim. Male presents with the best option of exploring the truest spirit of Maldives.

    THE NATIONAL MUSEUM

    The National Museum is a structure made up of steel and glass, and is a gift from China under a bilateral agreement, and was completed recently in 2010. The impressive part about this two floored building is the display of famous lacquer work boxes, age old cannons, broken pieces of Buddhist and Hindu idols, images of political events, and most importantly a replica of the pen that was used to sign the ‘Declaration of Independence’ from the British Empire. The tour begins downstairs with the galleries showcasing Maldivian history; they have items such as, weapons, religious items, and household items. The display on the second floor of the building is mostly from the modern period, and is a great eye opener to Maldivian history and culture. A particularly fascinating piece on display is the 6 m long skeleton of the Longman’s Beaked Whale, which is so rare that it is yet to be seen alive in the sea.

    THE FRIDAY MOSQUE

    In the 12th century A.D., Abu al Barakat visited Maldives which was then a Buddhist regime. He convinced the Sultan to embrace Islam and the rest is history. The mosque is supposedly built on a Buddhist temple, and has been renovated couple of times, the last being in 1656. Coral made door and window frames adorn this venerable structure. Those wishing to visit this beautiful mosque, must seek permission from a Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ officer, but it has been noted that those who are well-dressed and respectful may gain access on the spot. One can find a cemetery on the mosque grounds, located on one side; it is dotted with carved tombstones.

    SUNSET CRUISE

    The beauty of Maldives is best experienced with its sunset cruises, as the stunning hues of the sky come alive during this time. The evenings in Maldives more often than not seem to be created by an errant painter who runs amok with a palette of colours in a quest to master the form of modern art. The calmness of the evening sea, pampering by the wine and dine options of the resort boat, and watching the sun bid adieu with a spectacular colour riot of different shades of crimson are precisely the reasons why a sunset cruise into the open waters is a must do in Maldives.

    BODUBERU DANCE

    Dating back to 11th century, it is the traditional dance form of Maldives. Performed by a group of 15 or more, it consists of one lead singer and lots of drums apart from variety of thumping instruments. The pace of the music and dance gradually picks up, and usually at the end of it the spectators would be dancing along with the group. The songs and dance styles are similar to the ones found in East and South West Africa giving rise to speculation that these might have been introduced to this tiny island nation by sailors from the African continent. Check out resorts which have the option of treating you with one such evening of Boduberu dance. In the night, by the beach side, under the sparkling stars you will be transferred to a different world altogether.

    LOCAL ISLANDS

    Get away from the coastlines, and explore the islands of Maldives. Maldives on backpacker’s budget was unheard of a few years ago, as it was always meant to cater to luxury travel. Swanky high end resorts with jaw dropping infinity pools, hedonistic spas and international cuisine to satisfy varied palates never gave any reason to look anywhere else. Maldives, whose economy depends entirely on tourism has now opened its arms to backpackers and budget travellers by giving them access to many local islands, such as Maafushi, Fulidhoo and Guraidhoo. By staying on these local islands, one can gain an insight into Maldivian life. The downside to these islands is that they are governed under Sharia law like the rest of the country. So unlike the privately owned resort islands, strict dress code would be the norm here which may be a deal-breaker when one is visiting any island. To counter this, the Government has recently designated a few beaches on these islands as “tourist beaches” where the dress code would not be applied.

    Samsung, or rather “Samsung” with a lowercase S, is one of the most commonly used passwords in at least 30 countries, a recent study by password management solution company Nordpass has showed.

    According to SamMobile, using the name of your smartphone/TV/home appliance brand, for example, Samsung, as a password is not the worst offender, but it has grown in popularity in recent years.

    While the “samsung” password ranked 198th in popularity in 2019, it rose to 189th in 2020 and 78th in 2021, breaking the top-100 mark last year. The most popular password is “password,” which was reportedly chosen by nearly 5 million users, while other commonly used passwords include “123456,” “123456789,” and “guest”, according to the report. In the case of “samsung,” it turns out that it is not the only brand-based password used by a large number of online users.

    According to a recent report, a simple and predictable password can be decrypted in less than one second, whereas combining lowercase and uppercase letters with numbers can also produce variable results. A seven-digit password containing all of those elements can be decrypted in about seven seconds, while an eight-digit password takes about seven minutes, said the report.

    Amy Adams will not be part of new Superman movie?

    Actor Amy Adams says she is “thrilled” about her Man of Steel co-star Henry Cavill donning the Superman cape once again but she doesn’t know if she will be back as Lois Lane. Following his cameo in the Dwayne Johnson-starrer Black Adam last month, Cavill confirmed his return as the superhero in a new Warner Bros-DC movie on social media. But, will Adams be part of the upcoming film is not certain yet, as revealed by the actress herself.

    Asked about Cavill reprising his Superman role, Adams told Variety: “Isn’t it exciting?” The actor, who played firebrand journalist and love interest Lois Lane to Cavill’s protagonist in the 2013 movie Man of Steel, was speaking at the Wednesday premiere of her latest film Disenchanted. “I’m thrilled for (Cavill). He’s such a wonderful Superman so I’m very excited for him,” she added.

    The six-time Oscar nominee also weighed in on her return as Lois. “They haven’t spoken to me about it. If it’s me, great. If it’s somebody else, the role of Lois has been filled by so many wonderful actresses in the past so I’ll support whatever direction they go,” Adams noted.
