    Pachmarhi: Queen of the Satpuras

Pachmarhi is the only hill station and is the highest point in Madhya Pradesh. Pachmarhi is also often known as “Satpura ki Rani” or the “Queen of the Satpura Range”. Situated at an altitude of 1,067 metres, the picturesque town is a part of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to leopards and bison. Five sandstone cut caves on the hilltop are believed to be the spot where Pandavas stayed in Pachmarhi during their exile, making it a popular spot among religious tourists. Being at an elevated height and surrounded by bewitching forests of the Satpuras with the streams and waterfalls, Pachmarhi is a perfect weekend getaway from the nearby cities of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Since the town was discovered and developed in modern times by Captain James Forsyth of the British Army, it houses charming churches built in colonial style architecture.
    Bee falls
Among the many small and big waterfalls in Pachmarhi, Bee Falls is the most popular one which provides drinking water to the entire city. The 35 metres cascading falls can be reached through a short trek and is a famous picnic spot for the town folks.
    Jata Shankar caves
The Jata Shankar Caves in Pachmarhi are considered sacred as they are popularly believed to be the place where Lord Shiva concealed himself from the wrath of Bhasmasur.
The caves boast of a natural Shivalingam under the shadow of a massive rock and the stone formation in the cave closely resemble the mythological hundred headed snake Seshnag. The rock formation in the caves resemble Lord Shiva’s matted hair, hence the name. These caves are a must-visit for devotees.
    Pandava Caves
These caves are believed to provide shelter to the Pandavas during their exile period. It is now a protected monument and tourists flock from all over India to see this place.
These 5 caves also became a shelter to some Buddhist monks in 1st century AD and thereafter it is considered to be religious by Buddhists as well.
    Dhoopgarh
The highest point in the Satpura range, Dhoopgarh hilltop is a beautiful spot to see marvelous sunsets and sunrises. However, this point can only be reached by trekking. The trekking route is relatively tough as it passes through some waterfalls and valleys.
    Handi Khoh
One of the most beautiful ravines in Central India, Handi Khoh has a 300 feet high precipice in the middle of a dense forest. The place has a mythological history and is believed to be closely associated with Lord Shiva.
Handi Khoh is popularly beileved to have been a lake earlier. An evil devilish snake, which was guarding the lake was annihilated by Lord Shiva and the fury of the battle dried up the entire lake and the empty space took the shape of a handi(pot). Handi Khoh is famous for its quaint serenity and its old-world charm.
    Mahadeo hill
Situated at an altitude of 1363m, the Mahadeo hill in southern Madhya Pradesh is famous for an ancient shrine of Lord Shiva. The holy shrine holds a divine idol of Lord Shiva and one of the most beautiful shivalingams in the country. A cave on the eastern portion of this hill houses glorious cave paintings and also a holy pond, where devotees take a dip.
    Christ Church
Christ Church is a true-blue colonial architecture of the British era, still standing tall amidst tall trees and greenery. The protestant church clings on to the old-world charm and the tall spire, stone structure and Belgian glass panes will quickly transport you back to the bygone times. There is a small cemetery in the premises, bearing epitaphs dating back to the 1800s up to the World Wars.

    BLIND EYE ARTIST

    Dir/Edit/Prod: Ashwin Chaudhary, USA, 1h 24 m

In March of 2020, artist Justin Wadlington was about to unveil his latest acrylic painting, a large-scale self-portrait, when the global pandemic brought the world to a halt. For Justin, adversity was nothing new, and he decided to make the best of the situation by starting another painting which would become a signature work, called “Black American Dream.”

Justin’s life was changed forever when a tragic accident left him blind in one eye at the age of 5. Growing up without parents in the inner city of Philadelphia, Justin’s youth was a constant struggle to survive, as he lived in emergency shelters and group homes throughout his school years. As an adult, Justin re-discovered his childhood passion for art while in the break room at his day job, eventually building a new identity for himself as the ‘Blind Eye Artist.’ After starting out by asking friends to let him draw and paint them for practice, a decade later he was selling his pieces to world famous art collectors and celebrities.

Today, Justin’s artwork has reached the upper tiers of the art world with numerous famous and influential people among his fans and clients. Now as an established artist, Justin seeks to inspire kids from all backgrounds to believe that they can do anything they put their mind to.

A SONG FILM BY KISHI BASHI: “OMOIYARI

Dirs: Justin Taylor Smith & Kaoru Ishibashi, 2022, USA, Eng, 1h 33m

In ‘A SONG FILM BY KISHI BASHI: “OMOIYARI,”’ internationally acclaimed composer and songwriter K Ishibashi (professionally known as “Kishi Bashi”) embarks on a personal quest by creating his music in locations relevant to the Japanese American Incarceration during WWII. It is on this journey in which Kishi Bashi comes to terms with his own Japanese American identity and uncovers a myriad of social issues that have gripping modern relevance. ‘Omoiyari’ is a genre breaking, artistic exploration that fuses history, music, and the complexities of the human condition.

Kishi Bashi (K) had been commissioned by Nu Deco Ensemble to create a multimedia piece surrounding Executive Order 9066.  He and co-director Smith started to film K’s musical improvisations at these historical Japanese American incarceration camps across the US, with the original vision of making a behind-the-scenes short film. However, what transpired with the up-close and personal filming and intimate performances became this emotional and beautiful feature documentary that has now become a “song film.”

    INTO THE WEEDS

    Dir: Jennifer Baichwal, 1h 38m

‘Into The Weeds,’ from North America’s foremost and influential documentarians, Jennifer Baichwal, follows the story of groundskeeper Lee Johnson and his fight for justice against agrichemical giant Monsanto (now Bayer, which bought the company in 2018), the manufacturer of the weed killer, Roundup. On October 3, 2023, Film Movement and Fathom Events invited audiences to discover for themselves with a special one-night only nationwide theatrical release.

Does the most widely used weed killer in the world cause cancer?

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization (WHO), classified glyphosate – the active ingredient in Roundup – as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” A year later, Johnson filed a lawsuit claiming that Ranger Pro, a commercial-grade variant of Roundup, was a substantial contributing factor in causing his Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Johnson’s was the first “bellwether case” in a mass tort against Monsanto involving tens of thousands of plaintiffs: gardeners, golfers, farmers, groundskeepers, and ordinary people, following and trusting the instructions on the label.

    THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD

    Dir/Writ/Prod: Ian Phillips, 1h 14m

Gentrification is not a new phenomenon. In fact, New Yorkers have been talking about gentrification ever since the term was first coined in the 1960s. But over the decades, as more and more wealthy real estate developers and giant corporations have sought to reconstruct urban landscapes for economic gain, what was once a process of gradual change has turned into a nightmare of radical transformation and displacement. New York City is currently undergoing a period of “hyper-gentrification” unlike anywhere else in the world, and ‘There Goes The Neighborhood’ presents a portrait of the communities and activists who are courageously fighting back against the powers of greed and corruption in order to preserve the diversity and culture of their city.

The 74-minute film brings together distinct, yet interrelated, stories, closely following Lower East Side activist Arnette Scott’s fight against four massive 80-plus-story towers emblematic of displacement, greed and power, and Astoria’s Dannelly Rodriguez, who led the charge against Amazon’s HQ2 plan throughout the winter of 2018. The film also follows the elderly owner of a Prospect Heights hardware store surrounded by new development, and the owner of Brooklyn’s only Black L.G.B.T.Q.+ nightclub about to be displaced.

Opening: October 6, 2023 – SVOD service Indiepix Unlimited and via virtual cinema.

    AMERICANISH

    Dir/Co-Writ: Iman Zawahry, 1h 31m

‘Americanish’ is the first Muslim romantic comedy directed by an Emmy winning American Muslim woman, Iman Zawahry.

Welcome to America: Where dreams come true…ish. A break from the traditional romantic comedy, ‘Americanish’ highlights different layers of womanhood as they intersect with cultural and societal expectations. The film invites viewers into the home and lives of three marriage-aged women as they navigate the often turbulent waters of romance, culture, career, and family. We follow the joys and tribulations of career-driven sisters Maryam and Sam Khan, and their fish-out-of-water cousin Ameera. Set in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, the film follows a relatable and endearing storyline offering a fresh perspective on classic rom-com tropes. ‘Americanish’ delves into the complexity of trying to both honor and break from cultural traditions while balancing personal values and career goals in a society that does not always accommodate both.

  • 5G push: India climbs 72 places in global mobile speed ranking; ahead of Japan, UK, Brazil

The launch of 5G services in India turbocharged mobile download speeds here, pushing the country’s ranking 72 notches higher to 47th spot in Speedtest Global Index, ahead of nations like Japan, the UK and Brazil, according to Ookla. India’s speed performance has zoomed up 3.59 times since the introduction of 5G, it said dubbing the country’s 5G advancement as “remarkable”. In this global pecking order, India ranked not only ahead of its neighbours like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, but also some G20 countries, such as Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th place), and South Africa (48th place).
India’s speed performance has seen a 3.59 times increase since the introduction of 5G, with median download speeds improving to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023, from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022. “This improvement has led to India’s rise in the Speedtest Global Index, moving up 72 places, from 119th place to the 47th position,” it said.
The 5G deployments have led to an improved overall user experience across all telecom circles with operators investing in backhaul infrastructure.
The launch of 5G technology by operators like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel has led to a substantial increase in 5G subscribers, and operators still have ambitious roll-out plans, with the deployment of a significant number of 5G base stations across the country.
In fact, 5G has not only brought faster speeds but also higher customer satisfaction, as indicated by the Net Promoter Score (NPS), which shows that 5G users in India consistently rate their network operators more positively compared to 4G users.
“Additionally, 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services have been introduced to provide broadband connectivity in areas where laying fiber is costly or impractical,” it said.
Mobile users in India are among the most data-intensive consumers in the world. Yet, India’s 4G networks have been unable to keep pace with consumer expectations, primarily due to network congestion caused by population density, lack of cellular infrastructure, backhaul, as well as spectrum constraints. • Apple blames iOS 17 bug, apps like Instagram for making new iPhones run warmer

Apple blames iOS 17 bug, apps like Instagram for making new iPhones run warmer

Apple has said it has identified a few conditions which can cause new iPhones to run warmer than expected, including a bug in the iOS 17 software update and some third-party apps like Instagram. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity, the company said in a statement.
“We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update,” the iPhone maker said.
The new titanium material on iPhone 15 Pro, paired with its aluminum substructure and new system design, result in better heat dissipation than any prior stainless steel Pro models.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max do not suffer from overheating due to their design, contrary to some reports. Apple said that another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system.
“We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out,” said the company.
Third-party apps that Apple is currently aware of that overload the CPU and cause the iPhone to run warmer than normal include Asphalt 9, Instagram and Uber.
The tech giant will continue to investigate to see if there are others and work with those developers to implement fixes.
Instagram already issued a fix on September 27 (v302) to address its issue. However, the bug fix coming in iOS 17 does not involve reducing performance to address iPhone temperature.
The new iPhones feel warmer when users set up their devices for the first time, restore from a backup, wirelessly charge their device, use graphics-intensive or processor-intensive apps, games, or features, including augmented-reality apps; and/or stream high-quality video.
These conditions are normal, and the device will return to a regular temperature when the process is complete or when a user finishes their activity.
If a user’s device doesn’t display a temperature warning, they can keep using their device.
Those who use a larger USB-C power adapter (20W +) should expect iPhone temperature to temporarily increase while fast charging, according to the company.
The iPhone still regulates power into the device at up to 27W so long as the adapter is compliant with the USB-C PD (Power Delivery) standard.
This temporary increase in temperature will not impact the long term performance of the iPhone and is not a safety or injury risk. Source: IANS

LinkedIn bets big on AI to help recruiters find suitable candidates

Global professional networking platform LinkedIn, which has close to 1 billion users, on Tuesday introduced a new recruiter platform powered by generative AI to help companies find right candidates from the talent pool on the platform. ‘Recruiter 2024’ is being rolled out to select users from Tuesday and will be available for all LinkedIn Recruiter customers throughout next year. ‘Recruiter 2024’ is a new AI-assisted recruiting experience that will use generative AI to help recruitment professionals come up with better search to spot stronger candidates. LinkedIn has been using technology from ChatGPT-maker OpenAI to develop the features. Specifically, recruiters will now be able to use more conversational language to find talent. LinkedIn also revealed a new AI chatbot for its e-learning platform, called LinkedIn Learning. LinkedIn Learning will be incorporating AI in the form of a “learning coach” that is essentially built as a chatbot. “This economic climate requires that businesses be agile,. That is especially true when it comes to talent strategies,” said Karin Kimbrough, LinkedIn’s chief economist. Job seekers can now receive coaching from a chatbot that will give both real-time advice and tailored content recommendations based on current job title, career goals as well as the skills they follow.
“Businesses need new skills at a rate faster than I’ve ever seen before — which means they need to help their employees evolve via upskilling and internal mobility,” said Jennifer Shapley, LinkedIn’s VP of global talent. Source: IANS

  • Hubble pictures starry arms of spiral galaxy filled with millions of suns

Hubble Space Telescope, in its ongoing mission to explore the universe, is sharing a new image of a galaxy every day until October 7. The latest reveal is an intermediate spiral galaxy, NGC 4654, located in the constellation Virgo. This galaxy, approximately 55 million light-years away from Earth, is characterised by a bright center and swirling starry arms. NGC 4654 is classified as an “intermediate” spiral galaxy due to its unique features that blend characteristics of both unbarred and barred spirals. It is situated just north of the celestial equator, making it visible from both the northern hemisphere and most parts of the southern hemisphere.
Astronomers have noted an asymmetric distribution of stars and neutral hydrogen gas in NGC 4654, a common trait among many galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. This asymmetry is believed to be a result of a process known as “ram pressure stripping.”
As NGC 4654 moves through a superheated plasma primarily composed of hydrogen, known as the “intracluster medium,” the gravitational pull of the Virgo galaxy cluster exerts pressure on it. This pressure, akin to a gust of wind felt by a biker on a still day, strips NGC 4654 of its gas, forming a long, thin tail of hydrogen gas on the southeastern side of the galaxy.

  • RBI keeps rates steady at 6.5%, warns of inflation risks

RBI keeps rates steady at 6.5%, warns of inflation risks

New Delhi (TIP)- In a key decision, the Reserve Bank of India on Friday, October 6, decided to leave its benchmark repo rate unchanged for the fourth straight time, keeping it at 6.5%, while maintaining that it was focussed on a “withdrawal of accommodation” to tame inflation. Speaking on the decision, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said “recurring large overlapping food price shocks can impart generalisation and persistence to headline inflation”, a warning that elevated food prices could spill over to other sectors and inflation could become sticky, about which the central banker would remain watchful.
The RBI’s monetary policy broadly remains pivoted on “withdrawal of accommodation”, the governor said, meaning the RBI will be focussed on curbing money supply in the economy to control inflationary pressure. Vegetable prices eased in August and will come down further in September (figures will be released in a week), he said.
Das said a declining outlook for core inflation (inflation that excludes volatile food and fuel prices) was a “silver lining” but overall inflation still faces risks from a decline in kharif or summer sowing, hinting at continued higher food prices. The global economy is still in a slowdown, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das warned.
The RBI said it expected India’s economy to attain a real GDP growth of 6.5% in 2023-24. In July-September 2023, Asia’s third largest economy is estimated to grow at 6.5%, it said. The economy will expand 6% in October-December 2023 and 5.7% in January-March 2024, the central bank’s projections on Friday showed.
High cereal prices and the threat of El Nino, a weather pattern whose effects ripple around the globe, continue to key be variables to watch that can alter the course of inflation.
The central bank had hiked the repo rate by 250 basis points to 6.5% between May 2022 and February 2023, the RBI hit a pause in the April review of the monetary policy. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point. The repo rate refers to the rate at which commercial banks borrow money by selling their securities to the Reserve Bank, while the reverse repo rate is the rate at which the central bank borrows money.
These rates are key to boosting credit and investments by businesses to boost economy growth. A hike makes borrowing expensive for businesses, limiting money supply and cooling inflation – the key objective of why banks hike benchmark rates.
The RBI kept its retail inflation forecast unchanged and sees it averaging 5.4 per cent in the financial year 2023-24. The central bank decided to keep the policy rate unchanged for the fourth time in a row as it maintains a tight vigil on inflation.
Announcing the bi-monthly monetary policy on Friday, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent. It has raised rates by 250 basis points (bps) since May 2022 in a bid to cool surging prices. Source: HT

  • Oil prices extend rapid descent on demand worries

Oil prices extend rapid descent on demand worries

HOUSTON (TIP)- Oil prices fell about 2% on Thursday, October 5, extending the previous session’s nearly 6% losses, as an uncertain demand outlook overshadowed an OPEC+ decision to maintain oil output cuts, keeping supply tight.
Global benchmark Brent crude futures have declined about $10 a barrel in less than 10 days after edging close to $100 in late September. The combined percentage drop over the last two days was the steepest since May for both crude benchmarks.
Brent futures fell $1.38, or 1.6%, to $84.43 by 1:41 p.m. ET (1741 GMT). U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were $1.38 cents, or 1.6%, lower at $82.83.
“This is typical speculative trading activity – trying to make the best out of a bad situation after the bloodbath on Wednesday, and they (market participants) are trying to pick the bottom,” said Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho.
Oil settled more than $5 lower on Wednesday – its biggest daily drop in over a year, even after a meeting of a ministerial panel of OPEC+, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies led by Russia.
It made no changes to the group’s oil output policy, and Saudi Arabia said it would maintain a voluntary cut of 1 million barrels per day (bpd) until the end of 2023, while Russia would keep a 300,000 bpd voluntary export curb until the end of December.
However, investors are worried that peak demand for fuel consumption is behind us, said Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial, adding that hedge funds liquidated heavily on fears that higher interest rates with inflation would sap fuel demand. “The market is searching for an equilibrium,” Kissler said.
Close-to-close volatility on Brent was at its highest since May, while that on WTI was its highest since June. The market will be in deficit through the fourth quarter and the softer prices reduce the probability OPEC will ease supply constraints, National Australia Bank analysts said. Government data on Wednesday also showed a sharp decline in U.S. gasoline demand. Finished motor gasoline supplied, a proxy for demand, fell last week to its lowest since the start of this year.
“I don’t see gasoline demand getting much above 8.5 million barrels a day until the holiday shopping season kicks in and that’s going to be a problem for the market,” said John Kilduff, partner at Again Capital LLC in New York.
Other data on Wednesday showed the U.S. services sector slowed while the euro zone economy probably shrank last quThe U.S. dollar eased, but continued to remain near 11-month highs, making crude more expensive for foreign buyers. On Thursday, the Turkish energy minister said a crude oil pipeline from Iraq through Turkey, which has been suspended for about six months, was ready for operations. Source: Reuters

  • Reliance to buy Superdry’s South Asia IP assets

UK fashion retailer Superdry on Wednesday said it will sell its intellectual property (IP) assets in South Asia to Reliance Retail for Rs 402 crore through a joint venture.
Superdry will own 24% of the joint venture while Reliance Retail will have the remaining 76%. In a filing to the London Stock Exchange, Superdry plc said it has signed an IP joint venture agreement with Reliance Brands Holding UK Ltd for “the sale of its intellectual property assets, including the Superdry brand and related trademarks in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh to the joint venture vehicle”.

  • World Bank retains India’s growth projection at 6.3%

The World Bank has retained its projection of 6.3% growth in GDP during the current fiscal as against the RBI’s expectation of 6.5%. “The expected moderation is mainly due to challenging external conditions and waning pent-up demand. However, service sector activity is expected to remain strong with growth of 7.4% and investment growth is also projected to remain robust at 8.9%,” said the World Bank’s latest ‘India Development Update’. The April update too had forecast India’s GDP to grow at 6.3% in 2023-24 as against its earlier projection of 6.6% made in October last year. The report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which will follow, is awaited to see if it retains or lowers its earlier projection of 6.4% GDP growth in the current fiscal, down from its earlier forecast of 6.8%. The RBI too will give fresh projections at the end of its Monetary Policy Committee meeting chaired by its chief Shaktikanta Das on October 6.
“An adverse global environment will continue to pose challenges in the short-term,” said Auguste Tano Kouame, World Bank’s Country Director in India. “Tapping public spending that crowds in more private investments will create more favorable conditions for India to seize global opportunities in the future and thus achieve higher growth,” he said. “While the spike in headline inflation may temporarily constrain consumption, we project a moderation. Overall conditions will remain conducive for private investment. The volume of foreign direct investment is also likely to grow in India as rebalancing of the global value chain continues,” said Dhruv Sharma, senior economist, World Bank, and lead author of the report.

  • Consuming dark tea can help manage blood sugar levels: Study

According to new research, drinking black tea every day may help to reduce the risk and progression of type 2 diabetes in people by improving blood sugar control. Researchers from the University of Adelaide in Australia and Southeast University in China discovered that daily dark tea drinkers had a 53 per cent lower risk of prediabetes and a 47 per cent lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, even after controlling for established risk factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), average arterial blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and cholesterol.
“The substantial health benefits of tea, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, have been reported in several studies over recent years, but the mechanisms underlying these benefits have been unclear”, notes the study’s co-lead author Associate Professor Tongzhi Wu from the University of Adelaide and The Hospital Research Foundation Group Mid-Career Fellow.
“Our findings hint at the protective effects of habitual tea drinking on blood sugar management via increased glucose excretion in urine, improved insulin resistance and thus better control of blood sugar. These benefits were most pronounced among daily dark tea drinkers.”
These beneficial effects on metabolic control may lie in the unique way dark tea is produced, which involves microbial fermentation, a process that may yield unique bioactive compounds (including alkaloids, free amino acids, polyphenols, polysaccharides, and their derivatives) to exhibit potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, improve both insulin sensitivity and the performance of beta cells in the pancreas, and change the composition of the bacteria in the gut. The latest cross-sectional study included 1,923 adults (562 men,1,361 women aged 20-80 years) living in the community across 8 provinces in China. In total, 436 participants were living with diabetes and 352 with prediabetes, and 1,135 had normal blood glucose levels.
Participants included both non-habitual tea drinkers and those with a history of drinking only a single type of tea. They were asked about the frequency (i.e. never, occasionally, often and every day) and type (i.e. green, black, dark, or other tea) of tea consumption.
The researchers examined the association between both the frequency and type of tea consumption and excretion of glucose in the urine (assessed by the morning spot urine glucose-to-creatine ratio [UGCR]), insulin resistance (measured using the triglyceride and glucose index [TyG] derived from fasting plasma glucose and fasting triglyceride levels), and glycaemic status (defined as a history of type 2 diabetes, current use of antidiabetic medications, or an abnormal 75g oral glucose tolerance test).
People with diabetes often have an enhanced capacity for renal glucose reabsorption, so their kidneys retrieve more glucose, preventing it from being excreted in urine, which contributes to higher blood sugar.

  • World gets second low-cost vaccine for malaria

World gets second low-cost vaccine for malaria

The World Health Organisation has recommended the use of a low-cost and highly effective malaria vaccine developed by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) in collaboration with the University of Oxford in the UK. The R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine is the world’s second-ever WHO recommended vaccine for preventing malaria in children. In 2021, the RTS, S/AS01 vaccine became the first jab against the mosquito-borne disease to receive the WHO nod.
The WHO’s independent advisory body, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) and the Malaria Policy Advisory Group (MPAG), recommended use of the vaccine after reviewing its safety, quality and effectiveness standards last month. Their recommendation was based on pre-clinical and clinical trial data, which showed good safety and high efficacy in four countries, at sites with both seasonal and perennial malaria transmission.
“As a malaria researcher, I used to dream of the day we would have a safe and effective vaccine against malaria. Now we have two,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, in a statement.
“Demand for the RTS,S vaccine far exceeds supply, so this second vaccine is a vital additional tool to protect more children faster, and to bring us closer to our vision of a malaria-free future,” he added.
The R21/Matrix-MTM malaria vaccine has been licensed for use in Ghana, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. In combination with public health measures such as the use of insecticide-treated bed nets, the new vaccine can help save and improve the lives of millions of children and their families.
In areas with highly seasonal malaria transmission (where malaria transmission is largely limited to 4 or 5 months per year), the R21 vaccine was shown to reduce symptomatic cases of malaria by 75 per cent during the 12 months following a 3-dose series.
A fourth dose given a year after the third maintained efficacy. This high efficacy is similar to the efficacy demonstrated when RTS, S is given seasonally. Source: IANS

  • Poor sleep may increase risk of hypertension in women: Study

Poor sleep may increase risk of hypertension in women: Study

Women who struggle with getting enough sleep may be at greater risk of developing hypertension, or high blood pressure, a new study has shown.
Women who sleep less than seven to eight hours a night are at a significantly higher risk of developing hypertension, revealed the findings published in the journal Hypertension.
In addition, the team from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the US also found that women with sleeping difficulties had higher BMIs, lower physical activity, and poorer diets, on average and were more likely to smoke and drink alcohol and have previously gone through menopause. “These findings suggest that individuals who struggle with symptoms of insomnia may be at risk of hypertension and could benefit from preemptive screening,” said Shahab Haghayegh, a research fellow at the Brigham and Harvard Medical School.
“Hypertension is associated with many other physical and mental health complications. The sooner we can identify individuals with high blood pressure and treat them for it, the better we can mitigate future health issues,” Haghayegh added.
For the study, the team at Channing Division of Network Medicine of the Hospital followed 66,122 participants between 25 and 42 years of age all without hypertension. They collected information based on age, race, body mass index (BMI), diet, lifestyle, physical activity, history of sleep apnoea, and family history of hypertension.
The team tracked sleeping difficulties, such as having trouble falling or staying asleep or waking up early in the morning and collected responses at several time points throughout the study and found 25,987 cases of hypertension over the follow-up. Source: IANS

  • How to get thicker eyebrows naturally

How to get thicker eyebrows naturally

Over the last few years, big and bushy brows have become a rage. The latest brow trend has replaced skinny or pencil-thin brows, which was a big beauty trend in the 90’s. Eyebrows define your face and thicker brows add a youthful touch to your face. If you’re not blessed with a thicker pair of brows, you can always fill in the sparse areas or make them look thicker using brow gels. But if you’re looking for something natural and long-lasting, then we’ve got the right tips for you.
    Don’t pluck
First things first, don’t over pluck your eyebrows. Excessive plucking and even waxing will prevent the hair from growing back. Eyebrows grow in 2-3 months cycle, so not tweezing for a few months can actually show a lot of difference.
    Moisturise
Your brow area needs to stay hydrated and nourished. Use some petroleum jelly to lock the moisture. You can apply this 2-3 times a day to promote hair growth.
    Oil massage
The way oil works for your hair, it will do the same for your eyebrows. You can use castor, olive or coconut oil to promote hair growth. Dip a cotton swab in oil and gently massage before you sleep.
    Egg whites
Egg contains protein, which helps to promote hair growth and nourishes hair follicles. Beat white egg and apply this solution for 20 minutes.
    Get rid of smelly armpits
Body odor is normal, but smelly armpits can sometimes get out of hands. Even regular baths, good amount of perfumes can’t seem to solve this issue. We all know that that the underarm odour can be embarrassing. To solve this discomforting issue, we have listed 6 ways you can get rid of smelly armpits.
    Anti-bacteria body wash
It’s the bacteria that smells and not the perspiration. Look for body washes with Benzoyl Peroxide, which can help to reduce bacteria and prevent the body odour.
    Apple cider vinegar
You can also apply some apple cider vinegar to fight off the bacteria. It will help to reduce the odour by balancing the pH level of the skin. Don’t worry about the smell of apple cider vinegar, as it fades out when dry. Avoid this hack on days you have recently shaved or waxed.
    Always dry before applying anything
Not drying properly before applying antiperspirant or deodorant can also trigger the bad odour. Make sure you dry yourself properly before applying the stick.

Jennifer Aniston believes sleeping well is key to her good health

Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston thinks that getting a good amount of ‘rest’ has helped her stay healthy and vibrant. “I drink a lot of water, move my body daily, try to eat whole, fresh foods, and get as much sleep as I can. That last part is challenging for me, but it’s so important. I feel it when I don’t get enough rest,” the Hollywood star said. “In addition to all of that, I try to be really mindful about what I let into my head space. Our world is really going through some challenges and I know we all care a lot, but sometimes I think it’s imperative that we turn off the noise.”
Earlier this year, Aniston described sleep as ‘beautiful’. The actress has struggled with insomnia for years, and she has now grown to appreciate the value of sleeping well. She told: “Sleep is extraordinary. It’s beautiful. When you’re younger, you kind of take it for granted. You think, ‘I can survive on three to five hours of sleep and I feel great,’ and then, all of a sudden, it just starts not to feel great and your performance isn’t as good as it should be,” she added. Aniston also acknowledged that lack of sleep can lead to other health problems.
