4 arrested for Indian-origin man’s killing in Canada

Yuvraj Goyal was found dead by the police when they were responding to the call of a shooting in Surrey on Friday, June 7 morning

SURREY, BC (TIP): A 28-year-old Indian-origin man was shot dead in a suspected “targeted killing” in Canada’s British Columbia province, according to the police, who have arrested and charged four people with first-degree murder in connection with the case.

Yuvraj Goyal was found dead by the police when they were responding to the call of a shooting in Surrey on Friday, June 7, morning, the homicide unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.

Goyal worked at a car dealership in Surrey, Global News reported, quoting his sister, Charu Singla.

She said the family had no idea why he was killed and that they had no indication that he had any ties to organized crime. Goyal’s brother-in-law, Bawandeep, said the victim was on the phone with his mother, who lives in India, just before he was shot.

“He came back from his gym, (his) daily routine, stepped out of his car, and was shot,” Bawandeep said.

Police arrested four suspects — 23-year-old Manvir Basram of Surrey, 20-year-old Sahib Basra of Surrey, 23-year-old Harkirat Jhutty of Surrey, and 20-year-old Keilon Francois of Ontario — shortly after the shooting. They have been charged with first-degree murder; CBC News quoted the police as saying.

In a statement released on Saturday, the homicide unit said authorities were alerted to a vehicle fire shortly after the shooting. On Saturday, the four were charged with first-degree murder, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said.

Police said that while initial evidence suggests it was a “targeted shooting, investigators are working to determine the reason that Goyal, a 28-year-old community member with no history of police contact, was killed.”

The homicide unit also urged anyone with information or people driving in the area with dash-camera footage to contact the police.

40 Indians among 49 killed as massive blaze engulfs building in southern Kuwait’s Mangaf

PM Modi sends Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh to Kuwait

NEW DELHI (TIP): Over 40 Indians were killed and more than 50 others injured after a devastating fire broke out at dawn in a building housing around 195 migrant workers in southern Kuwait’s Mangaf area, officials said on Wednesday, June 12. The total number of people killed in the Al-Mangaf building was 49 and 42 of them are learnt to be Indians; the remaining ones are Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and Nepali nationals, they said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described the fire incident as “saddening”, reviewed the situation arising out of it at a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and Principal Secretary to the PM PK Mishra, among others.

An official statement said Modi expressed deep sorrow at the “unfortunate incident” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He also announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh to each of the families of the deceased Indian nationals from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

The official statement said Modi wished speedy recovery of those injured and directed that the government of India should extend all possible assistance.

“The fire mishap in Kuwait City is saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait is closely monitoring the situation and working with the authorities there to assist the affected,” Modi said on X earlier.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is urgently travelling to Kuwait following a direction from the prime minister primarily to oversee assistance to Indians injured in the fire and to ensure early repatriation of mortal remains of those killed.

Jaishankar also expressed deep shock over the incident and said the Indian embassy in the Gulf nation will render the “fullest assistance” to all concerned. Officials said most of the Indian victims are from Kerala.

The fire in Al-Mangaf building was reported to authorities in Al-Ahmadi governorate at 4.30 am and most of the deaths were due to smoke inhalation, Kuwaiti media reported, adding the fire started in a kitchen.

Kuwait’s Interior Ministry in a statement confirmed that the death toll reached 49.

“Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait city. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalized. Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information,” Jaishankar said on X.

“Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured,” he said.

Later, Jaishankar spoke to Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya.

The Minister posted on X: “Apprised of the efforts made by Kuwaiti authorities in that regard. Was assured that the incident would be fully investigated and that responsibility will be fixed.”

Jaishankar urged his counterpart for early repatriation of the mortal remains of those who lost their lives. He emphasized that those injured were getting the requisite medical attention.

“We will review the situation after MoS KV Singh reaches Kuwait.”

Indian ambassador to Kuwait Adarsh Swaika visited several hospitals, including where the injured have been admitted. Construction firm NBTC group rented the building for stay of more than 195 workers, most of them Indians from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and northern states, the Kuwaiti media said.

The NBTC group is partly owned by an Indian, officials said.

Kuwait’s Interior Ministry said criminal evidence department personnel are currently working on identifying the victims and revealing the cause of the fire.

It said strict measures will be taken against building owners who violate laid down norms.

“Unfortunately, we received a report of a fire at… exactly 6:00 am (0300 GMT) in the Mangaf area,” Major General Eid Al-Owaihan, head of the interior ministry’s General Department of Criminal Evidence said.

Kuwait’s health ministry said the injured were admitted to several hospitals, with 21 of them sent to Al-Adan Hospital, six to Farwaniya hospital, one to Al-Amiri and 11 to Mubarak hospital.

Officials in Delhi said officials from the Indian embassy are going to the hospitals where the victims were taken to.

The number of deaths and injured people will be known after they get the details, one of the officials said.

“Amb @AdarshSwaika visited the Al-Adan hospital where over 30 Indian workers injured in today’s fire incident have been admitted. He met a number of patients and assured them of full assistance from the Embassy,” the Indian embassy said on ‘X’.

“Almost all are reported to be stable by hospital authorities,” it said.

Indian ambassador Swaika also visited the site of the fire. The Indian embassy said it is in touch with Kuwaiti law enforcement authorities, fire service and health department for necessary action.

Interior minister of Kuwait Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf Al-Sabah ordered an investigation into the fire incident and issued directions to apprehend the owner and janitor of Al-Mangaf building.

“What happened today is a result of the greed of the company and building owners,” Al-Sabah was quoted as saying by Kuwait Times Kuwaiti authorities have started an investigation into the fire.

Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah visited the site of the fire and blamed violations of norms and greed by the real estate owners for the incident, reports from Kuwaiti said.

4 Indian-origin students drown in Volkhov river near St Petersburg in Russia

NEW DELHI (TIP): Four Indian students who were studying at a university 200 km from St Petersburg in Russia drowned in Volkhov river after getting caught in strong currents even though they were in waist deep water and sober, reported locals at the site of the accident. A girl student was saved with the help of a life buoy from a passing ship while another boy swam back on his own.
All the five students involved in the accident belonged to Jalgaon district of Maharashtra and were between 18 and 20 years old.
“Indians, young students from polytechnic university, were sober. They just ran into waist-deep water and splashed, laughed, and did not go deep. Now, it is hot, there is a lot of water, the current is strong. At some point, they were swept away by the current closer to the bridge, right under the “Swimming prohibited” sign,” the chief of Novgorod prosecutor’s office, where the incident took place, told the Russian media.
“We, the locals, all know that it is very dangerous to swim near the bridge. There is a strong current, pits, stones, whirlpools. Apparently, they did not know. I didn’t see the moment itself, but those who saw it say that one of them began to drown, a girl. The rest rushed to save her and everyone was carried away by the current,’ she added.
The students were from the Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University located on Volkhov river which was described as a “crazy river’’ by a Russian diplomat.
The MEA said its consulate in St. Petersburg remains in contact with the university and is providing all possible assistance. Local emergency services have so far recovered two dead bodies from the Volkhov river. The search for the remaining two missing students continues.

  • U.S. Indian-origin players put up a fighting performance against India before going down

U.S. Indian-origin players put up a fighting performance against India before going down

    By Prabhjot Singh

India ran through a couple of rough patches against “mini India” before Surya Kumar and Shivam Dube helped it scrap through with a seven-wicket win in the T20 World Cup at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, June 12. It was India’s third consecutive win and first loss for the USA.
An unbeaten 72 -run fourth wicket partnership between Suryakumar (50 not out) and Shivam Dube (31 not out ) cliched the game with 10 balls to spare. At one stage, India was struggling at 39/3 at the end of 7.3 overs. Studded with two sixers and as many fourers, it was Surya Kumar’s first half century in the T20 World Cup that came from 49 balls that saw his team through.
It was a big heartbreak for the home team as it did try to match its much superior opponent in every department of the game.
Saurabh Netravalkar did what Arshdeep Singh did in his first over. Saurabh had a much bigger fish in his net when he trapped Indian star batsman Virat Kohli for a duck. After skipper Rohit Sharma had taken a single off the first ball, Saurabh had Virat Kohli caught behind by Andrias Gaus to make India 1/1, not a good start for the pre-tournament favorites. With the second ball of his second over, he sent back Indian skipper Rohit Sharma caught by Harmeet Singh for three to make India 10/2.
The form of Indian star openers must be worrying the team management as Kohli has not even entered double figures in three innings he played. Rohit had slightly better performance than him but least inspiring. After Saurabh dismissed both Kohli and Rohit Sharma, it brought together Rishabh and Surya Kumar together to pull India out of woods. Rishabh Pant (18), who survived a close run out call, went without any addition to his individual score of 18 to make India 39/3. He was clean bowled by Ali Khan, Rishabh and Surya had added 29 for the third wicket. On the halfway mark, India were 49 for three.
Indian batsmen struggled as they took the score to 60 for three in 13 overs with Surya Kumar on 23 and Shivam Dube on 13. It was after a considerable wait that Surya Kumar hit India’s third boundary on the last ball of the 14th over to make it 67 for three. Interestingly, when India reached 76 for three at the end of 15 overs, three of its batters – Rishabh (18), Surya Kumar (29) and Shivam Dube (23) had hit a boundary and a six each.
A hit to the maximum and a boundary of successive balls by Surya Kumar in the 17th over helped India cross the 100-mark.

Arshdeep Singh took two wickets in his first over.

Two wickets in the opening over, including a wicket on the first ball of the match, gave India a dream start against “Mini India” team. Arshdeep had opener Shayan Jahangir trapped leg before with his first ball and on the last ball of the over sent back Andries Gaus, caught by Hardik Pandya, for two to make it 3 for 2. It was at this stage that Steven Taylor and Aaron Jones were brought together to put up 22 runs for the third wicket before Hardik Pandya in his second over had Jones caught by Mohammad Siraj for 11. Earlier on Jones had hit Siraj for the first six of the US innings..
Opener Steven Taylor, who tried top held the US innings together was the fourth man to return to pavilion after scoring 24 with two hits to the maximum. Immediately after hitting his second six, he was clean bowled by Axar Patel to make the score 56 for five. He and Nitish Kumar had added 31 runs for the fourth wicket. Nitish who made 27 was the fifth man to go. His wicket was claimed by Arshdeep Singh, his third of the innings.
When Arshdeep got Harmeet Singh caught behind by Rishabh Pant, it was his fourth wicket and he ended his spell with flattering figures of four for nine, perhaps his best in T20 cricket. Hardik Pandya was other successful Indian bowler claiming two for 14 in 4 overs while Bumrah remained wicketless for 25 runs in 4 overs. Jasdeep Singh was the last US batsman who ran himself out on the last ball of the innings.

Saurabh Netravalkar’s double strike left India at 33/2 at the end of the Powerplay

    ‘Mini India’ vs India
As many as eight players in the USA T20 World Cup squad are either born in India or have grown up there. Two of them – Saurabh Netravalkar and Harmeet Singh – have even represented India at the U19 World Cup. Batter Milind Kumar has played over 100 first-class and List-A games for Delhi and Sikkim. The others – left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige and captain Monank Patel, fast bowler Jasdeep Singh, and left-arm spinner Nisarg Patel- have played age-group or club-level cricket in India. Batsman Nitish Kumar, who comes from Punjab, also had his first lessons in cricket back home.
They have played a huge role in making the USA a side to reckon with. USA have already made heads turn at this T20 World Cup by beating Canada and Pakistan. They were sitting at the second spot in Group A and needed to win one of their remaining two group games to qualify for the Super 8 stage in the West Indies. Their opponent, India, was a different ballgame altogether. Not just because they are the strongest team in the group and one of the contenders to lift the trophy but also because many of the USA squad members once harbored the dream of representing India at this level.
And players like Nitish Kumar and Harmeet Singh proved their worth with the bat to help USA cross the three-figure mark in what otherwise is a low scoring T20 World Cup. US had set up a contestable 110-run target for India. And India had put in its best to achieve the target with only 10 balls to spare.

  • India and Afghanistan keep South Asian flags flying

    By Prabhjot Singh

Cricket, a game of the British vintage, has become a religion for South Asians. So overpowering is its growing popularity in the subcontinent that in the ongoing T20 World Cup in Americas – West Indies and the USA are jointly hosting the 9th edition of this marquee event – 12 of the 20 teams are represented by players of the South Asian descent.
Incidentally, a record number of six South Asian nations – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal – qualified for the T20 World Cup 2024, six other teams – Canada, Oman, Uganda, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the USA – are also represented by players of the South Asian descent.
Otherwise, South Africa has won all its three matches played so far defeating two of Asian teams – Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Besides, it has beaten the Netherlands to stay at the top of the table with maximum thee wins from as many matches.
Looking at analytics of the completed 21 of 55 matches of the tournament, performance of South Asian teams and players have been hawking media headlines. Playing against teams from other parts of the World, South Asians have a 3-4 record, with Afghanistan recording convincing wins against Uganda and New Zealand and India notching up a similar flattering win over Ireland, they have suffered some shocking defeats, including Pakistan losing super over game to the USA and Nepal going down tamely to the Netherlands. In the last game played today at Nassau Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh went down fighting to South Africa by 4 runs.
South Africa 113/6 (Heinrich Klassen 46, David Miller 29, Quinton de Kock 18, Tanzim Hasan Shakib 3/18, Taskin Ahmed 2/19) beat Bangladesh 109/7 (Tawhid Hriday 37, Mahmudullah 20, Keshav Maharaj 3/27, Anrich Nortje 2/17 and K Rabada 2/19) by four runs.

In the matches played among South Asian nations, India recorded an exciting 6-run win over Pakistan in a low scoring game while Sri Lankans were surprised by Bangladesh.
Players belonging to the South Asian Diaspora have till now performed well for the countries of their present abode. When the US shocked Pakistan, it was all because of some good batting by the team captain, Monnak Patel. Other players of the South Asian descent who have done well include batters Pargat Singh (Canada) Shreyas Movva (Canada) and Vikramjit Singh (the Netherlands.
Former Pakistani cricket star Shahid Afridi wrote in his column that in the game between India and Pakistan, it was an easily chaseable target. No team has ever defended a lower total at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he wrote holding that
Pakistan’s bowling was disciplined and it managed to restrict what is the best batting line-up in the world to just 119.”
He quoted Indian skipper Rohit Sharma admitting that his team did not bat well enough and the loss of early wickets, including his own and that of Virat Kohli to bring the game to life. Early removal of both of them gave Pakistan plenty of momentum.
“There has been a lot of talk about the drop-in pitch in New York and the surface was a little slow compared to the batting-friendly pitches we have become accustomed to in T20 cricket,” wrote Afridi but went on to add that the pitch should never be used as an excuse and neither captain did so – they know that top-level professionals should know how to adjust to any conditions.
“I believed India’s batters were 35 to 40 runs short of where they wanted to be. In my experience, international cricket and especially the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is all about handling pressure. On the big days, you have to have nerves of steel until you make it through.
“India stayed positive and calm until the last ball and the pressure of the run chase was not handled well by Babar Azam’s side. The key difference between the two teams was India’s consistency, self-belief, discipline and attitude on the field. The Pakistan batting line-up simply isn’t clicking and what we saw was a weak display of power hitting,” Afridi added. India has now won seven of its eight matches against Pakistan at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

For New Yorkers, the T20 World Cup is over

    By Prabhjot Singh

After eight of the 20 teams participating in the T20 Cricket World Cup went all out in their quest for a place in the Super 8, curtains were rung down on the makeshift Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. The closing game, between the two undefeated teams – India and the USA – was not without its anxious and exciting moments before the host team conceded defeat by seven wickets with 10 balls to spare.
Teams that played in New York included India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, Canada and the host USA. India won all of its three games here to stay on top of Group A. South Africa also won all its three games here.
Though it was the last game, it was not the end of cricket here at Long Island where sports goods dealers are hoping for a huge demand for cricket equipment in the coming times. “The game has come to stay here. And the growing interest of the youngsters is reflected by growing demand for the game gear here,” remarked a shopkeeper of Floral Park.
Many youngsters felt encouraged to take their first lessons in the game from the players and officials of the participating teams.
Since there were terrorist threats, especially to the India-Pakistan game, the police did not take any chances for any of the eight games played here. It was only after the end of the India-USA game that the police started dismantling its security apparatuses. The police did not let its guard down till the end as India was playing.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder was quoted saying in the Media that it has been the highest level of security that has been in place during the World Cup. Most cricket fans had to walk from Nassau Coliseum to get to the stadium in Eisenhower Park. As fans make their way in, they were immediately ushered into security checks where they were forced through a screener and were checked two or three times before ever entering the grounds.
Police said it had on an average deployed about 300 officers at the stadium alone. There were K9 units, mounted police and partners from multiple agencies working together to make sure everyone was safe.
County officials also claimed that they put a lot of work in to making sure the event ran smoothly. The local businesses welcomed the holding of T20 World. Cup here as it gave a boost to them.
“When you are charged with keeping 34,000 people safe every day – a lot of work but it is worth it. As close to perfect as you can possibly get,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, told Media on the last day of the event.
A Long Island-based company Landtek, installed the field and the main pitch where the cricket matches were played. Getting the right type of grass for the historic event was no easy feat. “This job in our backyard was special,” said the owner of the company. He revealed that twenty-two tractor-trailers took the trip from Florida to New York. The trays carrying the drop in pitches were approximately 10 x 82 feet long weighing approximately anywhere from 16 to 18 tons a piece.”
Nearly 200,000 pounds of sod made the long journey from Boynton Beach, Florida, to Nassau County as workers started installing it in April at the 34,000-seat temporary cricket stadium constructed for the event.
In the games played here, South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets, the Netherlands by 4 wickets and Bangladesh by 4 wickets; India beat Ireland by 8 wickets, Pakistan by 6 runs and the US by seven wickets; Pakistan beat Canada by seven wickets and Canada beat Ireland by 12 runs.

  • Indian-origin Major Radhika Sen honored with UN peacekeeping award

Indian-origin Major Radhika Sen honored with UN peacekeeping award

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): Major Radhika Sen, a peacekeeper with the United Nations (UN) mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been honored for her outstanding efforts in empowering local communities, particularly women.
“Receiving this prestigious award on behalf of all the peacekeepers working in MONUSCO as well as my country, India, is just amazing. I cannot describe it in words,” said Major Sen, who served with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented Sen with the 2023 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award on Thursday, observed as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
The award recognizes the efforts of a military peacekeeper in promoting the principles of the 2000 Security Council resolution that calls for protecting women and girls from conflict-related sexual violence and sets gender-related responsibilities for the UN.
Congratulating her, Guterres called her “a true leader and role model. Her service is a true credit to the United Nations as a whole”.
Sen served with the Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), where she helped create the Community Alert Networks in North Kivu as a platform that brought in community leaders, young people, and women “to voice their security and humanitarian concerns,” according to the UN.
With her MONUSCO colleagues, she worked to address those concerns.
Guterres said that “with humility, compassion, and dedication,” she earned the trust of “conflict-affected communities, including women and girls” as her troops engaged with them “in an escalating conflict environment in North Kivu”.
Earlier, Sen said, “Gender-sensitive peacekeeping is everybody’s business – not just us, women. Peace begins with all of us in our beautiful diversity.”
“This award is special to me as it recognizes the hard work put in by all the peacekeepers working in the challenging environment of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and giving their best to bring a positive change in society,” she added.
Hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Sen is a biotech engineer who was studying for a master’s degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay when she decided to join the Army.
She was assigned to MONUSCO in 2023 as the Engagement Platoon Commander with the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion and completed her tenure in April 2024.
Sen is the second Indian peacekeeper to receive the honor after Major Suman Gawani, who served with the UN Mission in South Sudan and received the award in 2019.
Of the 6,063 Indian personnel in UN peacekeeping operations, 1,954 serve with MONUSCO, 32 of them women.
The UN said that Sen, who led mixed-gender engagement patrols and activities, became a role model for both men and women by fostering “a safe space for men and women to operate together under her command”.
She also made sure that peacekeepers under her command operated with sensitivity to gender and sociocultural norms in the eastern DRC “to help build trust and thereby increase her team’s chance of success”, the UN said.
Among the activities she launched for women were English language classes for children, and health, gender, and vocational training for adults.
“Her efforts directly inspired women’s solidarity, providing safe spaces for meetings and open dialogue,” the UN said.
She encouraged women in the village of Kashlira, near Rwindi town, to organize themselves to advocate for their rights, particularly in local security and peace discussions.

Indian-origin sepsis survivor hopes to make history in UK general election

LONDON (TIP): An Indian-origin Labor Party candidate is drawing upon a very personal experience of surviving sepsis with the country’s state-funded healthcare service in her campaign for the July 4 general election to be elected from her hometown in Leicestershire, East Midlands.
Hajira Piranie, whose mother hails from Maharashtra and her grandparents on her father’s side from Gujarat, is busy campaigning to be elected as a first-time member of Parliament from the Harborough, Oadby & Wigston constituency in southern Leicestershire.
One of her campaign themes is to highlight that safeguarding the National Health Service (NHS) is more than just a slogan for her and that only a Labor Party-led government, which first created the NHS 76 years ago, can tackle the waiting lists faced by patients.
“In 2019, I survived sepsis, and it was a difficult time as my lungs had collapsed and I was on a ventilator fighting for my life,” said Piranie.
“I have been campaigning for the UK Sepsis Trust as their Ambassador and raising awareness, specifically within our South Asian communities, on picking up on the symptoms of sepsis. It is a big reason why I’m a Labor candidate because it is the party that created the NHS and we are the only party that can save it and get people those appointments when they need it to save their lives,” she said.
As a mother of a three-year-old, in her late 20s, Piranie has also been actively involved with the work of a charity in Maharashtra with links in the UK that supports victims of human trafficking.
“As a young mother, it’s about creating a better future for my son and the next generation. This ties in with my Indian heritage because as Indians, we’re proud to be the voice for those who don’t feel like they have a voice,” she said.
“I’m deeply connected to my Indian roots. I visit India very often to visit my family there and I also work with organizations there like Kshamta, which is linked to a charity here called Kindled Spirit where I’m a trustee, helping survivors of human trafficking in Mumbai. I’m so proud that the values that have been instilled in me from my family have brought me here as a British Indian parliamentary candidate,” she shared.
Asked about how confident she feels about overturning the Conservative Party hold in her constituency, Piranie reiterated the Labor line of “change” and welcomed the snap summer election as an opportunity to convince the electorate.
She added: “It’s important that we use our voice to affect change. We’ve had 14 years of chaos. It’s time for the Labor Party to bring stability back into our country.
“If I’m elected, it would be my job to listen and be an accessible, visible member of Parliament, not just at election time but throughout.”
Piranie is among several Indian-origin candidates contesting the July 4 general election, with both the main parties finalizing their candidate lists for 650 constituencies across the UK.
According to a forecast by the British Future think tank, the next Parliament in Westminster is set to be the most diverse yet – expected to increase the current figure of over a dozen MPs of Indian heritage elected to the House of Commons.

  • US commends Indian govt, people on successful elections

US commends Indian govt, people on successful elections

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): The US has commended the Indian government and the people for successfully participating and completing the Lok Sabha elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to form the government for a third consecutive term with the BJP-led NDA getting a majority in the Lok Sabha, notwithstanding crushing losses in three Hindi heartland states after a bitterly fought election that was projected as a referendum on his popularity.

The Election Commission of India has declared results for 542 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, with the BJP winning 240 seats and the Congress 99. “On behalf of the United States, we want to commend the government of India and voters there for successfully completing and participating in such a massive electoral undertaking, and we look forward to seeing the final results,” State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily news conference on Tuesday.

He was responding to a question on the Lok Sabha elections in India, in which the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) crossed the halfway mark of 272 seats, paving the way for a third consecutive term for Modi.

“First of all, our understanding is that the election results have not been finalized. So, we will wait for the finalization of those election results before we offer any definitive comment,” Miller said when asked to comment on the results.

“I’m also not going to comment on winners and losers in an election, as is our case around the world. What is important for us and what we have seen over the past six weeks is the largest exercise of democracy in history as the Indian people came to the polls,” he added.

He also denied reports of external influence in Indian elections by Western powers, including the US.

“We always will express our views clearly and openly. We express them with foreign governments privately and, when we have things that we are concerned about, we also express them publicly, including from this podium. That’s what I’ve done. But that, in no way, is an attempt to influence an election in India or anywhere else,” Miller said. He said he expects the close partnership between the US and India to continue.

“There is a great partnership, both at the government level and at the people-to-people level, and I fully expect that to continue,” Miller said.

“Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory, and the nearly 650 million voters in this historic election. The friendship between our nations is only growing as we unlock a shared future of unlimited potential,” President Joe Biden said in his congratulatory message.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the US congratulates Prime Minister Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha general elections.

“With approximately 650 million voters casting their ballots over the past six weeks, these elections represent the largest exercise in democracy in human history. We commend Indian voters, poll workers, civil society, and journalists for their commitment and vital contributions to India’s democratic processes and institutions,” Miller said. “We look forward to continuing to further our partnership with the Indian government to promote prosperity and innovation, address the climate crisis, and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” he said.

NSA Sullivan to visit New Delhi to engage new govt on shared India-US priorities: White House

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): US President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will visit India to engage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led new government on shared priorities, including the trusted, strategic technology partnership, the White House said, as the two top leaders seek to deepen the bilateral partnership. Sullivan’s visit was discussed during the phone call President Biden made to Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday to congratulate him on his re-election for a historic third term.

“President Joseph R Biden, Jr spoke today with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to congratulate him and the National Democratic Alliance on their historic victory in India’s general election,” the White House said in a readout of the call. Biden also commended the people of India for participating in the elections, with nearly 650 million going to the polls to vote, the readout said.

The two leaders emphasized their commitment to deepening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership and to advancing their shared vision of a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, it said.

“The two leaders also discussed National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s upcoming travel to New Delhi to engage the new government on shared US-India priorities, including the trusted, strategic technology partnership,” the White House said.

Prime Minister Modi, responding to Biden’s congratulatory message, replied that he was “happy to receive call from my friend President @JoeBiden. Deeply value his warm words of felicitations and his appreciation for the Indian democracy.”

“Conveyed that India-US Comprehensive Global Partnership is poised to witness many new landmarks in the years to come. Our partnership will continue to be a force for global good for the benefit of humanity,” Modi wrote on X.

Sullivan’s travel dates to India have not been announced yet but is expected to be within days of Modi being sworn in for the third time on Saturday. Modi is all set to take charge as the prime minister for a third consecutive term with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) winning 293 seats in the Lok Sabha polls. Modi is likely to take oath on June 8.

In a separate statement, Senator Ben Cardin, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, congratulated the people of India for concluding their elections, with votes cast at over a million polling stations throughout the country over the course of just a few weeks’ time.

“The people of India have again demonstrated their commitment to the democratic process, casting their votes in spite of this year’s intense heatwaves,” he said.

“The US-India partnership is, and will remain, important for regional and global prosperity for many years to come. I look forward to strengthening this relationship, and believe it will endure so long as it is founded in mutual respect and trust, and a commitment to democratic values,” he said.

“As political leaders begin to form a new government, I reaffirm my support for the people of India in their continued efforts to strengthen justice and the rule of law, to enhance transparent governance, and to safeguard human rights,” Cardin said.

Chairman emeritus of Cisco, John Chambers, in a LinkedIn post, congratulated Modi on his third term in office.

“When I reflect back on my first meeting with PM Modi, I recall being struck right away with his humble yet courageous spirit and also his bold vision for India. His Digital India initiative is one of the best I have ever seen, and recent major partnerships in defense, technology and more are a clear indicator of the country’s growth trajectory,” he said.

“As I said at the Kennedy Center last June, I trust PM Modi with my life and I believe India will become the #1 GDP in the world, in large part because of his efforts. I look forward to collaborating further to make the US-India partnership the strongest in the world as the Chairman of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum. Keep an eye on India – I, for one, will continue to be the biggest bull on the country under his leadership,” Chambers said.

GOPIO-CT Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month

STAMFORD, CT (TIP): The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT) hosted a highly engaging virtual seminar to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month.

Dr Thomas Abraham, Chairman of GOPIO International and Trustee of GOPIO-CT started the seminar with introducing GOPIO and its chapter in Connecticut with all its activities and how one can participate. He then introduced GOPIO CT President Jaya Daptardar, who was the driving force behind organizing a wellness seminar and panel discussion on May 30th, 2024, via Zoom. The event was well received by the attendees.

The seminar focused on the theme of “Embracing Wellness and Cultivating Mental Health Awareness” and featured an impressive and diverse panel of speakers. The panelists included Dr. Mohini Ranganathan, an associate professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and a practicing psychiatrist for 20 years, and Dr. Jaya Daptardar, an Ayurvedic Doctor with 25 years of experience who also serves as the Chief Compliance Officer for Bridges Healthcare in CT, and Mini Santosh, an Early Childhood Director with Community Action Agency of Western CT.

At the seminar, Dr. Mohini emphasized that no community is immune to mental health issues and stressed the importance of open conversations about mental health. She also highlighted the lack of adequate awareness and conversation about mental health in the South Asian American community, while also noting an eagerness to learn about it.

“It is important not to be shy about discussing behavioral health issues, “

Dr. Jaya Daptardar underlined that behavioral health challenges are not specific to any particular race, ethnicity, or gender. She emphasized the importance of identifying early signs of behavioral changes and challenges and starting conversations to seek help. She also discussed various therapies and treatments available, as well as simple prevention and wellness methods such as breathing techniques, meditation, and yoga.

Mini Santosh, an educator in early childhood education, spoke about the need for more attention to mental health, especially after the pandemic. She highlighted the stigma surrounding mental health in Indian communities and emphasized the importance of providing support and access to mental health services.

The panel discussion generated insightful questions from the participants, and the Q&A session provided valuable takeaways for parents and participants. It was evident that more panels and community conversations are needed to increase awareness of mental health in South Asian and Indian communities. GOPIO CT has a strong platform to offer health and wellness-related seminars for the community.

Over the last 18 years, GOPIO-CT, a chapter of GOPIO International has become an active and dynamic organization hosting interactive sessions with policy makers and academicians, community events, youth mentoring and networking workshops, and working with other area organizations to help create a better future. GOPIO-CT – Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – serves as a non-partisan, secular, civic and community service organization – promoting awareness of Indian culture, customs and contributions of people of Indian origin through community programs, forums, events and youth activities. It seeks to strengthen partnerships and create an ongoing dialogue with local communities.

  • Catskill Mountain Railroad Goes Green

    Catskill Mountain Railroad Goes Green

NEW YORK (TIP): With global warming and climate change at the forefront of our news recently, the Catskill Mountain Railroad is helping to fight back. In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and harmful emissions from the use of diesel fuel it is now running its locomotives on 100% Biodiesel. The Catskill Mountain Railroad is the first tourist railroad in the United States to convert to 100% biodiesel and shows the CMRR’s commitment to Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger’s leadership to create the boldest climate agenda in New York State..

According to the US Department of Energy, the use of 100% Biodiesel reduces Carbon Dioxide (Greenhouse Gas) emissions by 74% compared to regular diesel fuel. Additionally, it reduces carbon monoxide and particulate emissions by nearly 50%, and hydrocarbon emissions by nearly 70%. Notably, the composition of the remaining particulates is much less adverse than that from normal diesel as they are biodegradable.

The CMRR is being supplied the biodiesel by NetZero Biofuels, a Hudson Valley startup founded by local entrepreneur Dave Davenport and located near Newburgh. NetZero converts thousands of gallons of byproduct soybean oil from farms in Syracuse, New York, which are treated at their production facility in nearby Rock Tavern, New York. With the CMRR being NetZero’s first major commercial customer, it is a win-win for both businesses by supporting a growing Hudson Valley supplier of green energy as well as making the Catskill Mountain Railroad a leader in sustainability in the US railroad tourism industry.

The Catskill Mountain Railroad, named Best Tourist Attraction of 2023 by the Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce, is working hard to help achieve the green carbon neutral goals being encouraged by Ulster County in the environmentally safe operation of its tourist trains. • Aura of ‘invincibility’ around PM Modi ‘shattered’; opposition energized: World media on Indian election

Aura of ‘invincibility’ around PM Modi ‘shattered’; opposition energized: World media on Indian election

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): The “aura of invincibility” around Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been “shattered” by the Indian voters who gave the Opposition a new lease on life, this is how the international media described the outcome of India’s general elections.

According to the results for all Lok Sabha constituencies, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 240 of the 543 seats and the Congress 99. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has comfortably crossed the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha though the BJP lost its outright majority. India’s election results appeared as the top news among influential mainstream newspapers in the US.

The New York Times started its report by noting, “Suddenly, the aura of invincibility around Narendra Modi has been shattered.”

Terming the results as “unexpectedly sobering,” it noted that they were a “sharp reversal a decade into Mr. Modi’s transformational tenure.”

“Modi’s Party Wins, but it’s far from a landslide,” said the second lead story on the front page of The NYT. “A sobering result for a Prime Minister on the Cusp of a 3rd term,” the daily said on its front page which carried a picture of Modi at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi after the election results were out.

“India’s voters rebuke Modi,” said the lead story of The Washington Post, which is now owned by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and added that the election results were a rare setback for Hindu nationalists. For the past decade, India has been “synonymous internationally with its prime minister, Narendra Modi. But on Tuesday, as final election results poured in, the electorate appeared to show dissatisfaction with the status quo and placed the serial winner onto shaky ground,” The Post wrote.

There was “tepid support for his Hindu nationalist party, piercing the air of invincibility around the most dominant Indian politician in decades, it said.

“Modi Declares Win but faces Setback,” said the lead story of The Wall Street Journal which also had a picture of the Prime Minister at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi along with the party president J P Nadda amidst showering of petals.

Notably, all three major US newspapers had been very critical of Modi during the election campaign and had said that the country was headed towards a majoritarian and authoritarian regime. The exit polls and opinion polls before the election results had said that the BJP would easily cross the 300 mark in a Lok Sabha.

Tuesday’s results showed that “India’s democracy is not as dead as we thought; that is for sure,” Devesh Kapur, a political scientist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies was quoted as saying by The Post.

“This electoral surprise shows that voters still have an independent mind. Otherwise, this juggernaut would not have stalled,” he said.

The Editorial Board of The Wall Street Journal in its editorial said the election result suggests that Indians have high expectations for their leaders, and have again used the world’s largest democracy to warn those leaders to do better.

“The question now will be whether Mr. Modi takes this election warning to heart, or retreats into even more sectarian and authoritarian methods,” it said.

“While Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party finished first and is still well positioned to form a government with its allies in the coming days, the BJP’s performance paled in comparison to its showing in 2014, when Modi swept to power on a wave of national anger over corruption, or 2019, when he was buoyed by nationalist sentiment over a border clash with Pakistan,” The Post wrote. Tuesday’s result is a humbling moment for a leader whose lead in the polls was lauded by supporters as unassailable, CNN commented.

The election results show that Brand Modi has lost some of its shine, indicating that even Modi is susceptible to anti-incumbency. In other words, he is not as invincible as many of his supporters believed. This offers renewed hope to the Opposition, the BBC said. “This election is undoubtedly a rebuke for Modi and the BJP,” Time magazine quoted Milan Vaishnav, the Director of the South Asia Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, as saying.

“After ten years in power, it was in many ways a referendum on its track record in office and there are clearly many Indians who are feeling restless and uneasy.”

Modi now faces a more powerful Opposition than at any point over the past decade, it said.

“His (PM Modi) poorer performance will have political ramifications. At a minimum, the BJP will have to depend more on the junior members of its existent multi-party alliance.”

The election results indicated Modi had not achieved the landslide victory many had predicted, a piece in The Guardian commented. “The Opposition alliance appeared to far outperform expectations,” the UK-based newspaper added.

CBC News said the Congress Party was given ‘a new lease on life’ in the election.

India’s election shows the world’s largest democracy is still a democracy, Vox Media, a US-based mass media company emphasized.

“If the basic test of whether a country remains a democracy is that the party in power can still suffer a setback at the ballot box, India passed on Tuesday. Results from the nation’s parliamentary elections — the largest in the world — indicate a shocking electoral setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),” it said.

“Modi will continue to be the dominant force in Indian politics (and a significant force in global politics) for years to come, but his rise looks less inevitable and invincible than it did just a few days ago, and the world’s largest democracy’s politics look just a bit more democratic,” it said.

In his third term, the Modi-led government might shift its focus to domestic issues, prioritizing public welfare and fair distribution of growth benefits, and even adopting a softer stance on Hindu nationalism, state-run China Daily said, citing analysts.

Qian Feng, director of the research department at Tsinghua University’s National Strategy Institute, said in his third term, Modi is likely to stay consistent with his foreign policy.

Qian said that the government could leverage global and regional shifts to boost India’s political, economic and diplomatic strength, enhancing its international presence.

“Modi’s victory, even if diluted, is certainly not a good omen for Pakistan. Relations between the two countries hit a new low under the two previous Modi governments. It’s not surprising that the Indian prime minister had upped the ante against Pakistan on the election trail,” the Dawn newspaper wrote in its editorial titled ‘Weaker but still lethal’.

India should reach out to Pakistan, and the state should respond positively to any Indian overtures. Naturally, rebuilding trust will take time, but long-term peace in South Asia is impossible without better Pakistan-India ties, it noted.

“India cannot skirt around the Kashmir question; both sides should at least start talking, even if they agree to disagree. Let India’s incoming government start afresh with Pakistan,” the leading Pakistani newspaper hoped.

Suozzi Applauds President Biden for Bringing “Order to the Border” and Cracking Down on Abused Asylum System

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): “I support this critical step to fix the asylum system and speed up deportations. Now it’s time for the Republicans in congress to step up and pass right now laws to secure the border”, Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-Congressional District 3) said in a statement. Congressman added: “ Pres. Biden has taken action – now the GOP needs to stop acting out. No more excuses. To those Republicans who now say it’s too little too late, the voters won’t be fooled. The Republicans in Congress have failed to act on the bipartisan Senate bill proposed earlier this year – their failure to act now is a cynical act of harming the country for their own political gain.

Stop the rhetoric and call a vote. Let’s secure the border and modernize legal immigration.”

ALBANY, NY (TIP): State Senator John Liu and Assembly Member Nily Rozic passed Resolutions J2225, K2400, commemorating the landmark 50th anniversary of the Flushing BAPS Shri Swaminarayan mandir (temple) – the first BAPS temple in North America yesterday. In honor of the occasion, BAPS members from around New York traveled to the State Capitol to receive the resolution and to perform the invocation in the Senate and Assembly chambers.

Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is a worldwide Hindu denomination dedicated to fostering faith, inspiring service and promoting better living. The first BAPS mandir in North America was built by the Pramukh Swami Maharaj on Flushing’s historic Bowne Street in 1974. Since then, six traditional stone Hindu mandirs and 108 hari mandirs have been built in the United States and Canada. State Senator John Liu stated, “This year marks the 50th anniversary of the BAPS mandir in Flushing, a historic milestone for the mandir and our community. The BAPS mandir has been a cornerstone of the Hindu community, serving the spiritual, social and community needs of so many, and we are proud to commemorate their tremendous commitments to serving the needs of others.”

State Assembly Member Nily Rozic stated, “It’s an honor to recognize the BAPS Mandir on their 50th anniversary. For 50 years, the Mandir has been a central center for worship, cultural heritage, and community service. Its contributions to the lives of its members and the community have been profound and far-reaching. I am grateful to celebrate their dedication to promoting unity, service, and spirituality with my fellow leaders in government.”

Dr. Vipul Patel, BAPS Outreach and Public Affairs, stated, “BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is an integral part of the social and cultural fabric of Flushing and we are proud to celebrate our 50th anniversary. BAPS is a well-established community institution and serves as a spiritual and cultural hub for thousands of Queens residents, all while remaining consistent with its founding mission of outreach and service.”

Shyam Patel, BAPS Pujari and Mandir Coordinator, stated, “We are excited to celebrate our 50th anniversary and honored to accept these New York State Senate and Assembly resolutions. BAPS Swaminarayan mandirs teach the arts, language, music and philosophy that are the roots of Hindu heritage. BAPS mandirs host various charitable efforts for local communities throughout the year such as walkathons, health fairs, blood drives, and more.”

Yesterday’s invocation on the floor of the Senate and Assembly chambers was performed by Pujari (Priest) Shyam Patel. NYC Congestion Pricing Delayed Indefinitely, Gov. Hochul Says

Congestion pricing in New York City was expected to begin on June 30

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): Congestion pricing in New York City will “indefinitely” be put on hold, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul. The announcement comes following reports from the New York Times and POLITICO that Hochul had been considering pausing the program, which was scheduled to start on June 30.

In a video released Wednesday, June 5 afternoon, Hochul confirmed that she had directed the MTA to indefinitely pause the congestion pricing program, citing “circumstances have changed.”

“My team worked in the final hours to find a way to implement [the program], but hardworking New Yorkers are getting hammered on costs,” she said.

Hochul added that she remains “committed” to investments in public transit, and she and her team are currently exploring other funding sources.

According to media reports, the decision to pause the program may have stemmed from pressure from Democratic candidates, who are expecting to be in tight races and view congestion pricing as a polarizing issue.

Under the current plan, most drivers entering Manhattan at 60th Street or below will face a base toll of $15 when congestion pricing commences. “Toll rates will vary by type of vehicle and time of day,” the MTA’s new congestion pricing website states. “Passenger vehicles and motorcycles will only be charged once per day.”
Those tolls will be tallied by toll readers that have already been installed on Manhattan streets enclosing what the MTA calls the Congestion Relief Zone, aside from the FDR Drive and West Side Highway.

The $15 base toll will apply from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends. Nighttime toll rates will be $3.75.

“Trucks and buses will pay a toll of $24 or $36 during the day, depending on their size and function, and $6 or $9 at night,” the MTA’s congestion pricing site states.

“The toll for motorcycles is proposed to be $7.50 during the day and $1.75 at night.”

Only a few types of vehicles will be exempted: emergency vehicles, those that carry people with disabilities, school buses, commuter buses and certain government vehicles.
