Seattle Police Cop who laughed after Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula’s death fired

SEATTLE (TIP): A Seattle police officer, whose insensitive comments and laughter following the death of an Indian student had caused outrage, has been fired.

Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, was struck by a police vehicle driven by Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave as she was crossing a street on January 23. Dave was driving 74 mph (more than 119 kmh) on the way to a report of a drug overdose call. Kandula was thrown 100 feet when she was struck by the speeding police patrol vehicle.

In bodycam footage released by the Seattle Police Department, Officer Daniel Auderer laughed about the deadly crash and remarked that “Uh, I think she went up on the hood, hit the windshield, and then when he hit the brakes, flew off the car…But she is dead.” After making these comments, Auderer “laughed hard for four seconds,” the Disciplinary Action Report said.

Interim Chief Sue Rahr at the Seattle Police Department said in an internal email that the hurt Auderer’s words have inflicted on Kandula’s family “cannot be erased. The actions this individual police officer have brought shame on the Seattle Police Department and our entire profession, making the job of every police officer more difficult”.

Rahr said as the leader of the organization, it is her duty to uphold the high standards necessary to maintain public trust. “For me to allow the officer to remain on our force would only bring further dishonor to the entire department. For that reason, I am going to terminate his employment,” she said in the internal email seen by PTI.

INDIANAPOLIS (TIP): In a landmark deal poised to reshape the landscape of chronic disease treatment, pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company has announced its acquisition of Morphic Therapeutic Inc.
The acquisition, valued at approximately $3.2 billion, is set to bolster Eli Lilly’s portfolio with groundbreaking oral integrin therapies, specifically targeting inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other serious chronic conditions.
Morphic, headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, has garnered attention for its innovative approach to integrin therapies. The company’s lead program, MORF-057, is a selective oral small molecule inhibitor of α4β7 integrin, currently in Phase 2 trials for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. This promising therapy aims to improve patient outcomes and expand treatment options for those suffering from IBD, offering a potential shift towards earlier intervention and combination therapies.
At the helm of Morphic Therapeutic is its Indian American CEO Dr. Praveen Tipirneni, a distinguished figure in the biopharmaceutical sector.
“Oral therapies could open up new possibilities for earlier intervention in diseases like ulcerative colitis, and also provide the potential for combination therapy to help patients with more severe disease,” said Dr. Daniel Skovronsky, Chief Scientific Officer of Lilly and President of Lilly Research Laboratories. “We are eager to welcome Morphic colleagues to Lilly as this strategic transaction reinforces our commitment to developing new therapies in the field of gastroenterology, where Lilly has made significant investments to deliver first-in-class molecules for the benefit of patients.”
Dr. Tipirneni, who has been the CEO of the company since 2015, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the synergy between Morphic’s innovative platform and Lilly’s extensive resources and commitment to inflammation and immunology. “Morphic has always believed that the immense potential of MORF-057 to benefit patients suffering from IBD could be optimized by the ideal strategic partner. Lilly brings unparalleled resources and commitment to the inflammation and immunology field,” he stated. He also expressed gratitude towards the Morphic team, investigators, and patients who have contributed to the success of their programs.
Under the terms of the agreement, Lilly will initiate a tender offer to acquire all outstanding shares of Morphic for $57 per share in cash. This offer represents a premium of approximately 79.0% to the closing stock price on July 5, 2024, and 87.2% to the 30-day volume-weighted average trading price of Morphic’s common stock. The transaction, approved by the boards of directors of both companies, is expected to close in the third quarter of 2024, pending customary closing conditions.

Before leading Morphic, Tipirneni served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Global Strategy at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, where he played a crucial role in the development and success of key clinical programs. His efforts were instrumental in Cubist’s acquisition by Merck in 2015.
Dr. Tipirneni’s diverse background spans roles in corporate strategy at Sun Microsystems and Covad Communications, as well as business development at Deltagen. • Meet Usha Chilukuri Vance, Indian-origin wife of Donald Trump’s Vice-President pick

Meet Usha Chilukuri Vance, Indian-origin wife of Donald Trump’s Vice-President pick

A litigator at a national firm, Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and has an impressive academic background

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): Usha Chilukuri Vance, the wife of JD Vance, whom Donald Trump declared as his running mate in the upcoming US presidential elections on Monday, July 15, brings a wealth of credentials and a deep connection to Indian values and culture. A litigator at a national firm, Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and has an impressive academic background. She holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Yale University and a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Cambridge, according to the New York Times. Born Usha Chilukuri, she has carved out a distinguished career in the legal field, having clerked for Supreme Court Justices John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh before Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Court.

Raised in a suburb of San Diego, California, with a strong emphasis on education and hard work, Usha’s academic achievements include serving as Managing Editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology and Executive Development Editor of The Yale Law Journal, according to a biography from Munger, Tolles & Olson law firm.

After four years of intense extracurricular activity at Yale, she continued her studies as a Gates fellow at Cambridge, where she engaged with left-wing and liberal groups. She was a registered Democrat in 2014.

Usha and JD Vance first met at Yale Law School and were married in Kentucky in 2014, with a Hindu priest presiding over a separate ceremony, according to the New York Times. The couple has three children together.

Usha Vance has played a subtle yet significant role in her husband’s success. She assisted Vance in organizing his thoughts on the social decline in rural white America, which inspired his best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which was adapted into a film directed by Ron Howard in 2020.

In the past, she has made some rare appearances with Vance as he sought the Ohio Senate seat.

As the US presidential elections draw near, former US President Donald Trump made his pick for Vice President, selecting JD Vance as his running mate on Monday, July 15. Trump confirmed Vance’s candidature through a post on social media.

Speaking to ANI, a US-based global real estate investment advisor and a well-known entrepreneur, AI Mason said, “Usha Vance is a highly accomplished attorney and daughter of Indian immigrants — and her husband brings youth and diversity to the Trump ticket.” “She knows the Indian culture and all about India. She can be a big help to her husband in navigating great ties between USA and India,” the entrepreneur, who is also a friend of the Trump family, said.

Meanwhile, in an interview earlier with Fox & Friends, Usha Chilukuri Vance and her Senator husband talked about the two having different faiths, and what are their views on the speculations of him becoming a pick for the Vice President of the US.

“I don’t think people understand how hard he works and how creative he is. Everything he says and does is built on a foundation of so much thought. He’s always trying to do better,” Usha Vance said.

On being asked about the reason behind her support for JD Vance, as the US Presidential elections remain around the corner, Usha told Fox, “There are a few different reasons…One is that I grew up in a religious household. My parents are Hindu, and that was one of the things that made them such good parents, that makes them really very good people. And so I think I’ve seen that…the power of that in my own life, and I knew that JD was searching for something. This just felt right for him.” The interview was taken three weeks before the announcement of JD Vance as the running mate of Trump in the upcoming US presidential polls.

Vance was born James David Bowman in Middletown, Ohio, to a mother who struggled with addiction and a father who left the family when JD was a toddler. He was raised by his grandparents.

The Trump campaign says the former president, following his brush with death, will call for unity in the face of tragedy instead of criticizing his political adversaries as he faces off with President Biden in a 2024 election rematch.

  • 2 Indian nationals arrested for ‘enslaving’ 33 countrymen at farms in Italy’s Verona province

2 Indian nationals arrested for ‘enslaving’ 33 countrymen at farms in Italy’s Verona province

The suspects own two agricultural sector companies with no employees on the books

ROME (TIP): Two Indian nationals have been arrested for allegedly enslaving 33 farm laborers, all from India, in Italy’s Verona province, according to a media report, weeks after the country was shocked by the tragic death of a Sikh farm worker who bled to death.Fina nce police also seized assets worth 4,75,000 euros from the suspects, who own two agricultural sector companies with no employees on the books and are allegedly total tax evaders, ANSA news agency reported on Saturday.

The two alleged gang masters were arrested on Saturday, July 13, and are under investigation for crimes, including enslavement and labor exploitation, the Italian news agency said.

The issue of modern forms of slavery in Italy recently came to the fore of media attention following the case of 31-year-old Sikh farm laborer Satnam Singh, who bled to death after being abandoned by his employer after a strawberry wrapping machine severed his arm in Lazio, near Rome, last month.

Singh, who was an Indian national, died due to “copious bleeding”, the ANSA news agency earlier reported.

On June 26, India asked Italy to take prompt action against those responsible for Singh’s death.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said last month that Singh, one of thousands of Indian immigrants who work in the fields in the country, was the victim of “inhuman acts”.

“These are inhumane acts that do not belong to the Italian people. I hope that this barbarity will be punished harshly,” she said following a Cabinet meeting.

Gang mastering and the often violent exploitation of migrant farm laborers is a chronic problem in Italy, especially in the south of the country.

Latina hosts thousands of immigrant laborers, many of them Sikhs, working picking fruit and vegetables for the local ‘agro-mafia’, according to Italian media reports.

Workplace accident insurance agency INAIL said recently that fatal accidents in Italy had risen by four to 268 in the first four months of this year.

There were about 100 last year, it said.

  • SUOZZI SEEKS NEW BIPARTISAN COALITION OF “BUSINESS, BADGES, AND THE BIBLE” TO BRING “ORDER TO THE BORDER”

SUOZZI SEEKS NEW BIPARTISAN COALITION OF “BUSINESS, BADGES, AND THE BIBLE” TO BRING “ORDER TO THE BORDER”

Will introduce legislation to fix the broken immigration and border system

WASHINGTON, DC (TIP): Congressman Tom Suozzi (D – Long Island, Queens) is seeking to build a bipartisan, broad-based coalition to bring ‘order to the border’ and reform America’s antiquated, broken immigration system.
Suozzi says he is also determined to bring together a new alliance –“business, the bible, and badges”– in a collective effort to lobby Congress and force it to do its job.
He explained this unique partnership by saying:
“Business has a huge stake in immigration reform. Companies, farmers, hospitals, and manufacturers need a long-term immigration fix to better plan the future of our nation’s economic health. Immigrant workers have become an essential part of the U.S. workforce, contributing across sectors and playing a noteworthy role in our country’s economy.”
“By using the word ‘bible,’ I refer to those basic values, both religious and secular, that Americans have embraced –that all men and women are created equal and are entitled to human respect and dignity. Spiritual and secular leaders of all kinds can join hands to practice what they preach: the golden rule, human dignity, and the worth of all people.
And ‘badges’ represent our country’s law enforcement community who need new, innovative technology, cutting-edge tools, and “order at the border” to better protect our borders and communities.”
“The U.S. faces an immigration crisis because too many politicians have spent too many years ‘weaponizing’ immigration policy-fighting across the aisle- but haven’t done a thing to fix it,” declared Suozzi.
“My goal is to introduce bipartisan legislation this summer that will 1) secure the border, 2) fix the broken and outdated asylum system, and 3) treat people like human beings,” he announced.
Suozzi has visited the southern border three times, meeting with border patrol agents, local law enforcement officials, mayors, businesses, and nonprofits. “It’s not working,” Suozzi says.
“The present immigration system is hopelessly outdated. The original asylum process was created during the ‘cold war.’ The United States Refugee Act of 1980 when America was happy to provide a safe haven to ‘individuals fleeing persecution in the Soviet Union, Cuba, and other communist and authoritarian regimes,’” Suozzi explained.
As Co-Chair of the newly formed Democrats for Border Security Task Force, Suozzi faces a daunting challenge: To find common ground with Democrats and Republicans in a bitterly divided, election year congress.
“Democrats and Republicans in Washington must work together to pass bipartisan immigration reform legislation to firmly secure our borders and establish clear, legal paths,” he asserted.
Suozzi said he was disappointed when a bipartisan Senate deal struck last February between Senators James Lankford (R-OK), Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), and Chris Murphy (D-CT) was torpedoed by former President Donald Trump. “You’ve got to keep on working. There’s an old expression: ‘Don’t mourn—organize,’” Suozzi rallied. “It’s hard. Getting this done is hard work, but I have made this my number one priority. I am going to build this coalition,” he added.
In May, when Suozzi realized that Congress was not going to pass the Senate’s bipartisan legislation, he worked with Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) to call on President Biden to take executive action.
In June, Suozzi welcomed the President’s executive orders on bringing “order to the border” and work permits for undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens, many of whom have lived in America for their whole lives. “Now Congress must, after 30 years, finally act!” Suozzi said.

According to Dr. Kaza, 24 of the 25 who voted “in person” in the secret ballot endorsed his candidature.

“The election was conducted candidly and transparently by the sitting BOT Chair Dr. Lokesh Edara. The documentation, including meeting minutes, was sent soon after to the AAPI office,” Dr Kaza recounted to this correspondent on the phone. He is based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Lokesh Edara, Chair of the Board of Trustees, confirmed in a phone call that he conducted the meeting at which Dr Kaza was declared elected BOT Chair for 2024-25. There were two other candidates. Michigan-based Dr Edara adds that Dr Kaza’s election was “further ratified” on June 19 by a majority of the Board of Trustees.

The majority of the Board stands by the results of the BOT Chair election conducted on June 8 at Spring Governing Body and affirms Dr. Kaza as the Incoming BOT Chair. Yet, Dr Kaza’s election to the prestigious position of the reputed national organization has been disputed. He says, “A second, unconventional, alternate duplicate election was conducted by the AAPI President. The President traditionally is not supposed to get involved in the BOT Chair election. It was done via Election Buddy software in an “extremely cryptic” manner without declaring who received the ballots and who voted.”

The AAPI Bylaw No. 5.5 (D) states that the BOT Chair will be elected by the Governing Body members (although until last year, for 40 years since the inception of AAPI, only BOT members elected their Chair).

Dr. Kaza argues that many legitimate Governing Body members did not get the ballot in the alternate duplicate election conducted by the President. Several discrepancies were found in the alternate duplicate election and have been reported to all concerned.

Some Indian community papers have published misleading press releases about the alternate duplicate election result. This may be premature because AAPI traditionally announces its new Chair of the Board of Trustees during its annual convention, which has been renamed World Health Congress and is scheduled for July 18-22 in New York. Dr Kaza is still hopeful of a resolution to the contested election. “The senior leaders in the organization can initiate a dialogue with the parties involved, hash out the differences and reach a compromise. In precedence from a few years ago, when a similar impasse occurred, both Chairs of the Board of Trustees agreed to share the term for six months each. Dr. Kaza is confident of a resolution because both parties have an interest in working for the betterment of the organization.

“I would like to work with everybody, the Executive Committee and Board and continue to do the right thing for the organization and move it forward,” he says.

“I’ll continue to work on charitable and educational activities, mentoring students and Residents.”

As BOT Chair, Dr Kaza is raring to implement AAPI’s ongoing projects in India, such as promoting the HPV vaccine to reduce cervical cancer deaths, growing CPR awareness that can save lives, and strengthening free health clinics nationwide.

Dr Kaza has served in many leadership roles in AAPI, the largest ethnic medical organization, including on its Board of Trustees (2022-25). He has practiced as an interventional cardiologist for 23 years in Nashville and is currently serving veterans who served the country. He is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Echocardiography.

He has held leadership roles including Chair of the Department of Medicine, Chief of Staff at Skyline Medical Center, and Board Member and Director of Interventional Cardiology. He has also been on the board of Cigna Medicare Advantage Plan. Hyderabad-born and educated, Dr. Kaza has been the Regional Director of OGKTMA (Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya, and Telangana Medical Colleges Alumni Association).

With his motto of ‘Manava Seve, Madhava Seva’, Dr. Kaza’s charitable and philanthropic activities have spanned many years in America and India. He has personally donated over $500,000 to various causes. He raised significant funds for Covid relief in India. As Fundraising Chair for Sri Ganesha Temple in Nashville for 15 years, he collected over $5 million for temple expansion. As Convener of the AAPI GB meeting, he raised another $80,000 to fight human trafficking in India. Recently, as President of ATMGUSA (Association of Telugu Medical Graduates in the USA), he partnered with Ekam USA and raised over $40,000 to empower women and children in India.

  • Celebrating Entrepreneurial Spirit and Democratic Values at the Campaign for Democracy Reception

Celebrating Entrepreneurial Spirit and Democratic Values at the Campaign for Democracy Reception

WINCHESTER, MA (TIP): On a bright summer evening, the US India Security Council President, Mr. Ramesh Viswanath Kapur and his wife Susan, opened their beautiful home and hosted a fund raiser for Governor Gavin Newsom, the 40th Governor of California. This event underscored the urgent need for democratic values, the entrepreneurial spirit, and the critical role of minority communities, especially Indian Americans, in shaping the future of our nation. Mr. Kapur opened the evening by expressing gratitude to Governor Newsom for his decisive veto of the proposed SB 403 bill, which aimed to ban caste discrimination, and for his interest in visiting a Hindu temple in Florida in the coming months. The room, filled with many Indian origin attendees, entrepreneurs, and young people, erupted in applause, recognizing Governor Newsom’s steadfast support for entrepreneurial initiatives and his principled stance on critical issues. Mr. Kapur also stated that he feels the Governor has a good chance of being the 47th President of USA.

Governor Newsom shared his inspiring journey from entrepreneur to Governor, recounting his early days in the 80s when he sold wine from his living room as a teenager. His story deeply resonated with the audience. He highlighted his impactful tenure on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where his work on homelessness and urban development drew significant attention. As Mayor of San Francisco in 2004, he made national headlines by authorizing same-sex marriage licenses and implementing universal healthcare for city residents. Newsom also spoke about the sister city initiative with the state of Karnataka in India during his mayoral tenure, which allowed him to visit the country with a large delegation of business and community leaders from San Francisco. He expressed his eagerness to visit India again as Governor.

Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of AI, technology, entrepreneurship, and the contributions of immigrants. He stated, “42% of all startups in California are founded by immigrants, and they are the lifeblood of our state. Amid the vitriol, xenophobia, and nativism that permeate much of our politics, particularly from figures like Donald Trump, we in California have endured and emerged stronger. We overcame the divisive rhetoric of Prop 187 in the 1990s, and today, we celebrate our diversity rather than merely tolerate it. As a result, we lead in manufacturing, boast the highest number of scientists, researchers, and Nobel laureates, and continue to drive innovation globally.”

Addressing the unique strengths of Massachusetts, Governor Newsom highlighted how renowned institutions of higher learning serve as conveyor belts for talent, fostering competition not just on price but on talent. He noted that what sets California and Massachusetts apart is their human capital—the best and the brightest. This spirit of inclusiveness and growth ensures that everyone benefits. In a state where 27% of the population is foreign-born, this mindset is crucial. California, a majority-minority state with a population equivalent to 21 other states combined, must see itself in the context of the world.

Governor Newsom also mentioned his recent travels to Michigan, a stop in Pittsburgh, and his packed schedule, including attending this event and visiting New Hampshire. The evening concluded with attendees eagerly speculating whether he would run for President or if Vice President Harris might run, given President Biden’s debate performance and the pressure reported within the Democratic Party, as seen in the news and through print media.

Prominent business leaders such as Vikram Rajadhyaksha, Dr. Venu Kondle, Yash and Jigna Shah, Manoj and Vaishali Shinde, Mathias and Natalia Troger, Shirish and Allison Nimgaonkar, tech entrepreneurs Thomas Arul, Manny Arora, Priya Samant, Yogi Gupta, Rishi Yadav, and community leaders including Raj Dichpally, Ranjani, Sandip Asija, Rahul, Bernice Singh and Dr. Anil Saigal, and Restaurateur Vinod Kapur, who offered the catering services for the evening, attended the event. Rishi Kumar, former candidate for the U.S. House representing California’s 16th Congressional District, was also present.

This memorable evening not only celebrated the entrepreneurial spirit and democratic values but also reinforced the significant contributions of the Indian-American community to the fabric of our nation. Governor Newsom’s visionary leadership and commitment to inclusiveness and innovation continue to inspire and drive progress.

All-round show propels India to 3-1 lead over Zimbabwe; Gill hails team effort

Harare (TIP)- Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad produced high-quality knocks before the bowlers did their part as India outplayed Zimbabwe by 23 runs in the third T20I of their five-match series here on June 10. Gill (66 off 49 balls), Yashasvi Jaiswal (36 off 27) and Gaikwad (49 off 28) propelled India to 182/4 after the visitors opted to bat on a fresh pitch. Zimbabwe were never really in the hunt despite an entertaining effort from No. 4 Dion Myers (65 not out off 49), and ended at 159/6.
Washington Sundar, who is likely to play a bigger role in India’s T20 set-up after the retirement of Ravindra Jadeja, struck thrice while Avesh Khan took a couple of wickets.
The fourth T20I will be played here on Saturday. After a loss in the series opener, India have restored normal service with back-to-back victories.
After Avesh Khan bounced out opener Wessly Madhevere in the second over, the wickets kept falling for the home team. However, Zimbabwe steadied the ship after losing their first five wickets for 39 runs. The 77-run stand off 57 balls between Myers and Clive Madande (37 off 26) fuelled their innings but it was not meant to be.
Earlier, India made some interesting selection calls. They duly inducted World Cup winners Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (12 not out off 7) and Shivam Dube into the playing XI, leaving out the likes of Riyan Parag in the middle-order. As for Zimbabwe, they were poor in the field to say the least, conceding extra runs and grassing regulation catches throughout the innings.
    Remarkable effort
Gill hailed their “remarkable” team effort on a two-paced wicket as India got their second successive win to snatch the lead. “It was a crucial match for us and the way we started with batting and bowling, it was remarkable,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.
Asked if he was a little disappointed that the team couldn’t reach 200 in the third T20, Gill said: “…the wicket was a bit double-paced, the odd ball was gripping and it was not easy to hit the length ball. Source: PTI

Dravid happy to forgo bonus amount after T20 World Cup win

Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has refused to take the additional bonus amount of Rs 2.5 crore offered to him by the BCCI following the recent T20 World Cup triumph in the Americas.
Dravid was offered the bonus amount following the national team’s success but he was happy to settle for the due amount – Rs 2.5 crore – similar to other coaching staff. The BCCI wanted to repay Dravid for guiding India to the trophy in Barbados by hiking his reward to Rs 5 crore, which is at par with the players, PTI has learnt that the 51-year-old was happy with an equal pay check as other coaching staff.
It was more of a goodwill gesture than any official call as Dravid’s tenure as India coach had originally ended after last year’s 50-over World Cup at home.
However, skipper Rohit Sharma and the governing body were successful in convincing Dravid to stay till the T20 World Cup as they then had felt that time was too short for a new coach to take up the high-pressure job.
Dravid went on to end his India coaching stint as a World Cup winner, and talks have been swirling around him joining an IPL franchise as mentor.

England stun Netherlands, to face Spain in final

Berlin (TIP)- Substitute Ollie Watkins sent England to their second successive Euro final with a 2-1 victory over the resilient Netherlands in the semifinal. Ronald Koeman’s men got off to the perfect start when Xavi Simons danced through the England defense before unleashing a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to break the deadlock after just seven minutes.
The Netherlands’ advantage didn’t last long, as Harry Kane converted a foul-play penalty following a VAR review with a well-placed shot into the bottom right-hand corner in the 18th minute, reports Xinhua.
The Three Lions gained momentum and almost doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when Denzel Dumfries cleared Phil Foden’s shot off the line.
Dumfries remained in the thick of things after rattling the woodwork with a header from a promising position on the half-hour mark. Gareth Southgate’s men controlled possession but couldn’t convert their chances before the half-time whistle. After a slow start to the second half from both sides, the Dutch gradually gained the upper hand, but it was not until the 65th minute that Pickford was called into action to save Virgil van Dijk’s header.
England continued to threaten and thought they had regained the lead, but Bukayo Saka’s goal was ruled out for offside in the 79th minute.
The Three Lions stunned the Oranje in the 91st minute when Watkins finished off an attack with a curling shot into the right-hand corner.
The Netherlands piled on the pressure, but England’s defense held firm to set up a meeting with Spain in the final on July 14.
“I’m lost for words! I didn’t want to come off the pitch at the end because I wanted to soak it all in. I don’t think I have ever hit a ball that sweet. I never thought I would play at a Euro 2024 with England, but I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get to this point,” said Watkins. Source: IANS

  • All eyes on new coach Gautam Gambhir’s supporting cast

The financial nitty-gritties of Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as India’s head coach are yet to be worked out but that’s the “last of his concerns” right now as he is focussed on getting a support staff of choice to prepare for the enormous challenges that await him during the three-year stint. On July 9, BCCI secretary Jay Shah officially announced Gambhir’s appointment, which was on cards for a long time. However, it is learnt that his salary is yet to be finalised although it is expected to be in the same bracket as that of his predecessors Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri. “For Gautam, it was important that he took charge and salary and other stuff can be worked out as it’s not going anywhere. It is similar to the case of Ravi Shastri in 2014 when he was first made Director of Cricket over head coach Duncan Fletcher,” a BCCI source said. “The salary will be in the same range of Rahul Dravid,” he added.

  • S&P 500 tops 5,600 mark in longest rally this year

S&P 500 tops 5,600 mark in longest rally this year

New York (TIP)- A rally in the world’s largest technology companies sent stocks to all-time highs, with Jerome Powell’s remarks to Congress not doing much to dissuade traders from betting on Federal Reserve rate cuts this year. For the first time in its history, the S&P 500 topped 5,600. A renewed bid for megacaps drove the US equity benchmark to its longest rally since November, with Nvidia Corp. up over 2.5% and Apple Inc. climbing on news it aims to ship 10% more new iPhones after a bumpy 2023. Treasuries remained fairly stable after a strong $39 billion sale of 10-year bonds. Swaps are pricing in two Fed cuts in 2024 — and higher chances the first comes in September.
As Wall Street geared up for the consumer-price index, Powell said the Fed doesn’t need inflation below 2% before cutting rates, while adding officials still have more work to do. He noted the labor market has cooled “pretty significantly.” Powell cited a “good ways to go” on the balance-sheet runoff, and said commercial real estate doesn’t threaten financial stability.
“The key takeaway from his testimony is the Fed’s assessment of the balance of risks is shifting in ways that – if supported and sustained by incoming data – will deliver a rate cut in September,” said Krishna Guha at Evercore. The S&P 500 climbed 1% — up for a seventh straight day — to notch its 37th record this year. Gold and silver mining stocks rallied on Fed easing bets. Banks underperformed. Google parent Alphabet Inc. has shelved efforts to acquire HubSpot Inc., according to people with knowledge of the matter.
US 10-year yields fell two basis points to 4.28%. Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill said the timing of a rate cut is still an “open question,” prompting traders to pare bets on August cut. Oil rose as a US holiday boosted demand for gasoline and jet fuel.
“Markets remain remarkably calm despite the flood of data this week, including Fed Chair Powell’s testimony, CPI/PPI reports, and the beginning of earnings season,” said Mark Hackett at Nationwide.
The so-called core CPI, which excludes food and energy costs and is seen as a better measure of underlying inflation, is expected to rise 0.2% in June for a second month. That would mark the smallest back-to-back gains since August — a pace more palatable for Fed officials.
“June’s CPI report looks to be another ‘very good’ report that should boost the FOMC’s confidence about the inflation trajectory,” said Anna Wong at Bloomberg Economics. “That should set the stage for the Fed to start cutting rates in September.”
A survey conducted by 22V Research shows 55% of investors expect the market reaction Thursday’s CPI to be “risk-on,” 16% said “risk-off” and 29% “mixed/negligible.”
“There is optimism about inflation generally,” said Dennis DeBusschere at 22V, adding that the survey also showed investors think “CPI is on a Fed-friendly glide path.”
Meantime, some trading desks say investors should gear up for a potential break in the eerie calm that’s recently descended on the market.
The options market is betting the S&P 500 Index will move 0.8% in either direction after Thursday’s report on consumer prices, based on the price of that day’s at-the-money straddles, according to Stuart Kaiser, Citigroup’s head of US equity trading strategy.
If it happens, that would be the biggest move for the index since June 12, the day of the last CPI print and interest-rate decision.
Market volatility may pick up in the days and weeks ahead, amid US political uncertainty, comments from the Fed chair, and the start of the second-quarter earnings season, according to Mark Haefele at UBS Global Wealth Management.
For the first time since 2022, S&P 500 earnings may not be laser-focused on just technology, with the quarter’s success hanging on everything aside from the megacap tech heavyweights that have driven stocks to all-time highs, according to Bloomberg Intelligence strategists led by Gina Martin Adams.

  • India’s budget may retain fiscal deficit target at 5.1%; job creation, social spending, capex to be key themes: Morgan Stanley

Mumbai (TIP)- US investment bank Morgan Stanley has said the Indian government is likely to retain fiscal deficit target at 5.1 percent of GDP in FY25, in line with the interim budget. Fiscal prudence, capital expenditure spending to help create jobs and targeted social sector spending are likely to be key themes of the Budget, it said. The government will unveil the Union Budget on July 23. The fiscal deficit target which was 5.6 per cent of GDP in F24 is expected to be on track to attain the target of 4.5 per cent of GDP by FY26, Morgan Stanley report said. “The fiscal headroom has improved with a larger-than-expected transfer of surplus from the RBI, which in our view will help to maintain the momentum on capex expenditure and increase targeted welfare spending,” it said.
Morgan Stanley said it expects the possibility of a slightly lower fiscal deficit target (tad below 5.1 per cent of GDP) given the support from tax and non-tax revenues.
According to the report, job creation supported through capex, targeted social sector spending and focus on ‘Viksit Bharat’ plan are likely to be the themes in the budget. “With fiscal prudence guiding the overall fiscal policy stance, we expect the focus to remain on capex expenditure over revenue expenditure and targeted social sector spending with focus on improving access to physical, social and digital infrastructure,” Morgan Stanley said.
“We also expect the budget to provide focus on the government’s road-map for ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed nation) by 2047. In addition, the budget could also give a road-map for a medium-term plan for fiscal consolidation beyond FY26,” it said.
It said the impact of the budget on the market has been on a secular decline, albeit actual performance is a function of pre-budget expectations (as measured by market performance ahead of the budget). As of now, the market seems to be approaching the budget with exuberance and could be dealing with both volatility and a correction post budget, if history is a guide, Morgan Stanley said.
“For the market, the key things to watch are the extent of fiscal consolidation (0 to 10 bps of GDP over the interim budget), the delta in spends on physical and social infrastructure (by about 20-25bps of GDP over the interim budget), sector level incentives/spends and changes to capital gains tax rates for equities… which we do not expect,” the report said.
“We think the market could be surprised by the lack of major tax cuts or redistribution spends. We are overweight financials, consumer discretionary, industrials and technology and underweight all other sectors,” it said.

Chinese scientists identify super moss able to ‘survive’ on Mars

Scientists have identified a super resilient desert moss species in China’s western region of Xinjiang that could help sustain possible colonies on Mars, a study by the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed. When subjected to conditions that simulate the environment on Mars, the moss – Syntrichia Caninervis – was found to be able to withstand extreme dryness, ultra-low temperatures and radiation, the academy said in a research paper published in The Innovation journal last week.
The moss could serve as the “basis for the establishment and maintenance of the ecosystem by contributing to oxygen production, carbon sequestration, and soil fertility”, the researched said in the study, published on July 1.
“(It) can help drive the atmospheric, geological, and ecological processes required for other higher plants and animals while facilitating the creation of new habitable environments conducive to long-term human settlement,” the paper added.
In the research, scientists found that even after losing more than 98% of its cellular water content, the moss was able to recover photosynthetic and physiological activities within seconds after it was hydrated.
When intact, the plant can also tolerate ultra-low temperatures and regenerate after being stored in a freezer at minus 80 degree Celsius (minus 112 Fahrenheit) for five years or in liquid nitrogen for a month.
The moss is found in Xinjiang, Tibet, a Californian desert, the Middle East and polar regions.
The race to place a larger footprint in space has spurred China and the United States to launch exploration plans in recent years. Chinese missions include launching near-Earth asteroid probe Tianwen-2 next year, and Tianwen-3 around 2030 to bring samples back from Mars. China last month retrieved samples from the far side of the moon. In the United States, NASA has formulated a 20-year plan for Mars, seeking answers to whether the red planet is habitable for humans.
